Fall Splendor

After a truly spectacular summer cruising season, October marks a month of transition as the days grow shorter and the weather turns crisp. But, as we hardy Northwest boaters know, there is still plenty of good boating to be had, albeit it may require a touch more planning and prepping.

This month’s issue satisfies both those needs, first with a follow-along guide to the spectacular northern Oregon coastline on pages 50-57 that travels from Astoria to Haystack Rock with stops at points in between. (As the Beaver State was my stomping grounds for the first two decades of life, I hope some of you get a chuckle out of the references to the classic 1980s and ‘90s computer game, “The Oregon Trail,” that are found within those pages.) And, because you might encounter a few drops along the way, we’ve also got you covered via the fall outerwear feature that starts on page 58 and highlights our favorite new coats, shoes, and accessories for wicking away the wet. Finally Approved for Maritime Innovation Center at Fisherman’s Terminal

After five years of planning and one global pandemic delay, the Port of Seattle’s promise to establish a Maritime Innovation Center (MInC) at the city’s Fisherman’s Terminal is closer to materializing. The green light, green as in money, was given for renovating a century-old building that will become MInC’s new headquarters.

The Port of Seattle approved $32.6 million in August to move forward on rejuvenating the terminal’s Ship Supply Building, first constructed in 1914 and one of the Port’s oldest existing facilities. MInC construction is set to begin at the Ship Supply Building in the second fiscal quarter of next year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

The new MInC will become a hub for incubator and accelerator programs focused on the maritime industry that, hopefully, establish hundreds of startups while providing resources on how to scale up their operations. Once completed, the site will have room for equipment fabrication, business incubator offices, and anchor tenant space. MInC will also support workforce development programs to promote job opportunities in the bustling maritime industry.

“The transformation of the Port’s oldest building into a world-class center is a reflection of the Port’s commitment to investing in innovation,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Fred Felleman.

According to a report released by the United Nations, the global infrastructure that is centered around maritime commerce, often called the “blue economy,” is estimated to be worth $1.5 trillion annually, with 90 percent of the world’s trade traveling over the ocean. Jobs within these sectors—including commercial fishing, sustainability innovations,

and recreation—remain in great demand across the Puget Sound region and will be the primary new businesses likely to be developed at the MInC.

The 15,000-square-foot MInC building, itself, will be reconfigured with a certification from the Living Building Challenge (LBC), a sustainability program ensuring that the structure will use the most innovative techniques for reducing energy usage and creating connections between the built environment and nature. To date, only three other existing buildings have met the strict LBC guidelines in Seattle.

The renovation won’t end with the Ship Supply Building. Also included in the MInC plan are “companion investments” that will help improve accessibility to the rest of Fishermen’s Terminal, as well as improved landscaping and interpretive signage that will provide historical perspectives on the city’s working waterfront. Public historian Sharon Boswell will collaborate with the fishing community and Headwater People, a First Nations consultant group, to include a broad range of cultural voices to be represented in the development.

Other future long-term changes at Fisherman’s Terminal include a new Gateway Building, which will provide light-industrial space for maritime businesses, new parking lot improvements, site furniture, and lighting upgrades. The redevelopment project for Fisherman’s Terminal, which was put on hiatus during the pandemic, will resume in 2026.

Second Phase to Begin in ’24 For Everett Fuel Dock Upgrade

The warm weather is over for now, but expect to see some welcomed changes when fueling up at the Port of Everett next summer. In August, the Port awarded a $7.8 million contract to begin the second stage of the long-running marina fuel dock reconstruction project.

This year, the Port completed the first stage of the renovation work, which placed 30,000-gallon underground gasoline and diesel fuel tanks at the west end of the Central Marina facility parking lot and removed older fuel tanks. Next year, the second stage will begin, including a move of the fuel dock to the east to avoid strong currents experienced at low tide.

Fabrication of the new 500-foot dock structure has already begun, with on-site work expected to take place in summer 2024. This second phase will reconfigure and enhance the dock’s layout, making it easier for boats to line up for refueling. The scope of work will also include the demolition of Central A- and B-Docks, and the installation of two additional on-dock fuel dispensers.

The plan also calls for a new attendant building, a point-of-sale system, and a new kiosk building that will include vending machines and public

restrooms. The fuel dock will also have commercial and recreational pump-out locations to ensure that the waterways around Everett are kept clean.

Jeff Lindhout, the Port of Everett’s chief of marina operations, said the port has spent more than $165 million in capital improvements to the aging marina over the previous 20 years. “This upgraded fuel dock project has been a long time coming with a lot of planning and coordination,” he added.

The new fuel dock will be used not only by local recreational and commercial boaters but also for vessels operated by the neighboring Naval Station Everett, the U.S. Coast Guard, the City of Everett Police and Fire Departments, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, and Native American tribes.

During this second phase of construction, the existing fuel dock will remain open for use by boaters in 2024. Once the project is completed, the old dock will be demolished and removed.

Poulsbo’s Refurbished Floating Breakwater Set to Open is Month

Boaters looking for late fall cruising to and from Kitsap County will likely be able to moor this month in the new floating breakwater at the Poulsbo Marina in Liberty Bay.

The refurbished breakwater, which has been in the works for several years, was expected to open earlier this spring until it ran into some construction delays. The breakwater is now operational but, at time of publication, was still awaiting the arrival and installation of two dozen 30-foot and 50-foot finger piers from Bellingham Marine, which were expected to come at the end of September. Once these piers are in place, the breakwater will be 100 percent complete, according to the Port of Poulsbo.

Currently, the new breakwater is anchored securely by steel piles and held up by 12-foot-wide floating concrete pontoons that were donated by Seattle’s Elliott Bay Marina. The platform will include greater public access and more transient moorage space along the new finger piers. The outside edge of the breakwater will also feature added moorage space for variable-sized boats of up to 75 feet in length.

Supported by nearly $2.5 million in grants from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Poulsbo breakwater now features 30A and 50A power pedestals, potable water connections, a new floating restroom, improved lighting, safety ladders, and a fire-suppression system.

Breakwaters tend to last roughly 30 to 40 years of typical maritime use, but the old Poulsbo structure had been in place for more than 60 years. The long-overdue renovation has moved the new breakwater 60 feet to the southeast and 40 feet to the south of the previous breakwater and log boom. Engineers for the new breakwater design estimate that the marina could see a 10- to 20-percent increase in wave energy due to the unrestricted flow of water underneath the structure, but its waveattenuation performance should be in the moderate to good range.

The Port of Poulsbo said that temporary and permanent moorage will remain open for the remainder of any necessary installation work, but added that parking may still be temporarily restricted in the Anderson parking lot while utility crews make final adjustments to the breakwater.

A Florida boatmaker looks to modernize and mobilize a lakeside staple with its new line of luxury “houseyachts.”

Expect an interesting new addition to the fleet of vessels found at this month’s much-anticipated Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) in Florida: Amongst the catamarans, cruisers, schooners, and superyachts will be the all-new Live 44DR by Reina Boats, a model that merges a yacht with a houseboat to create, as the company fittingly dubs it, a “houseyacht.”

The brainchild of Reina founders Hayri Dayi and Emin Günal, the 44-foot-long flagship model is essentially a high-end luxury condo on water, designed to connect adventure-seeking residents to the water via towering glass windows and spacious outer decking, with an interior clad in high-end materials, smart tech amenities, and sleek finishes that complement the two-cabin layout. The layout also boasts a full, C-shape wraparound kitchen, one head with a full shower, and a stunning foredeck dining area.

The 44 is one of six live-aboard models that the Florida-based Reina is currently building out of a shipyard in Turkey. They range in size from an expansive 60 feet down to a 24-footer that boasts a floating RV vibe well-suited to day trips and overnighters.

The inspiration for the brand came from a void the creators say they spotted in the marketplace, particularly when it came to the design—or lack thereof—of most houseboats. “The existing houseboat designs were stuck in the 1980s, and almost 90 percent of the houseboats on the water were commercially rented vessels. 2021 50’ Fountaine Pajot MY6

With light- lled spaces, lush amenities, and panoramic views found from nearly every spot onboard, this beautiful MY6, available from Je Brown Yachts, is a real gem.

Taking full advantage of its more than 21’ beam, this almost-new 2021 Fountaine Pajot MY6 features spacious areas for living and socializing, plus the traditional stability of a luxury power catamaran. e newer MY6, designed by PierAngelo Andreani and built by Daniel Andrieu, has a distinct Franco-Italian feel, with breezy, light- lled spaces, lush amenities, and panoramic views from nearly every spot on the vessel.

For those who know Grand Banks Yachts, this 2008 Aleutian may defy a few expectations. Up top, the bright and airy ybridge has similar helm controls forward of a spacious U-shaped couch and two polished wooden grid tables. A of the fully enclosable ybridge, the upper deck includes an outdoor sink, grill, and refrigerator, plus an Airtex hydraulic davit and a 13’ center-console Novurania 400DL RIB tender with a Mercury 50-hp outboard.

Down below, the athwartship master stateroom includes an en suite head with separate shower, an island king-sized berth, and an audio/ visual entertainment center. e forward VIP stateroom shares a portside day head and an en suite shower. A third guest stateroom features single bunkbeds and a side teak desk so the space can double as an o ce when needed. All staterooms feature rich teak paneling and ne joinery.

Exceptionally built, maintained, and updated, this unique 54-footer available from Denison Yachting is more than ready for fall cruising.

A er 14 years on the water, this O shore Pilothouse—one of only a handful of 54s to be built by the company—has had only two owners, who have painstakingly maintained the yacht and kept her updated with the latest technology and amenities. Since it’s 2009 launch, the Sierra Fox has added a new Barrett Enclosures ybridge enclosure, wireless yacht controller, and a new Dell XPR laptop computer, received top-of-the-line audio/visual and Pepwave Wi-Fi upgrades, and replaced all ship batteries with Lifeline AGMs.

Entering from the stern, one can see the cockpit is built for outdoor entertainment, with teak decking, a Magma BBQ grill, two teak folding chairs, a separate llet table, and a custom factory swim step for easy access. To reduce clutter, the BBQ and the chairs can also be stowed in a lazarette. A set of a electronic engine controls can also be found to starboard, including bow and stern thrusters and a rudder angle indicator for docking assistance.

Inside the sliding a doors, the wood-lined interior showcases a recent so -goods re t by Jonathan Quinn Barnett of JQB Design in both the salon and guest cabins. To port in the salon, a U-shaped sofa wraps around a hi-lo wooden table opposite an entertainment system with a Toshiba 32” Smart TV and two free-standing chairs to starboard. Just forward of the salon, the galley features more rich wood paneling, Corian countertops, and updated appliances, including a Fisher Paykel dishwasher, a Broan trash compactor, a Seaward 220V oven, a Sharp microwave,

a Kenyon four-burner glass cook-top, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer.

Up three steps from the galley, the pilothouse features another settee and table combo a of the helm chairs.

e helm dash features Nauticomp display screens, a full suite of Furuno navigation equipment, and a Simrad AP-28 Autopilot. Outside the pilothouse, a walk-around deck provides partially covered access from bow to stern.

Interior stairs lead to the ybridge, which has a duplicate helm con guration, featuring a safety support at the center of the radar arch. A of the electric upper-helm chairs, more socializing space is provided with two tables, a Raritan SS icemaker, an Isotherm refrigerator, and an L-shaped settee, featuring curved cushions covered with a striking blue-and-white striped fabric. On the a half of the ybridge deck, a 2009 Nautica 12.5' center-console RIB is secured, powered by a Yamaha 50-hp outboard and launchable with a Steelhead ES1000 crane.

Begin Your Journey In: ASTORIA

Nestled just over the Washington-Oregon state border, the port town of Astoria is steeped in both maritime history and small town charm, making it an ideal spot for a sojourn to precede a trip down the coast. Chockablock with forts, museums, breweries, boutiques, and restaurants, the sweet town sits at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, with Victorian-era houses dotting the hillsides that overlook the water and the towering Astoria-Megler bridge. ( is iconic structure—the longest continuous truss bridge in North America— is accessible for boaters to oat under 365 days a year, but this month, on October 8th, is the only day a year that pedestrians can make the trek across as part of the annual Great Columbia Crossing 10K event.)

More stunning views of the bridge can be found along the riverwalk trail that traverses the city’s picturesque main corridor located just o Highway 30. Running almost 13 miles in length, this trail meanders its way by myriad eateries, boutiques, hotels, and marinas, all with spectacular scenery and views. Speaking of marinas, captains looking to drop an anchor can do so at the East Mooring Basin located near the eastern edge of the riverwalk, or alternatively, boaters can nd water access and convenient moorage near the base of the bridge at the West Mooring Basin facilities. ose looking to instead hang their hats on dry land would do well to check out the Bowline Hotel. is nauticalthemed boutique establishment not only o ers luxe accommodations, but also a stellar lobby bar known as e Knot, where the creative cocktails ow freely, and the locally sourced fare is top notch. (Trust us and order the housemade herb-kissed onion dip served with the state’s beloved Tim’s potato chips to start.)

ere’s also bounty of brews to enjoy while in town: e town’s oldest brewery, Astoria Brewing Company, continues to stake its claim as one of the best places to stop for a solid brew from its prime location on Pier 11; Rogue Brewery’s Pier 39 Public House o ers a variety of handcrafted beers on tap to pair with gastropub faves like burgers and sh n’ chips at their rustic spot on the docks; and Fort George Brewery on Duane Street boasts a large, dog-friendly patio for those crisp, sunny fall days, a downstairs eatery for those wet days, a merch and beer-to-go shop; plus tucked away upstairs at the convivial establishment’s pizza pub, you’ll nd what many locals argue to be the best ‘za in town.

But, perhaps, the one can’t-miss stop in town for mariners is the Columbia River Maritime Museum that houses a 30,000-object collection covering shing, shipping, and military history in their harbor-front building. Here, you can discover the many stories of the legendary Columbia River Bar, one of the most dangerous passages in the world, as well as visit the historic Lightship Columbia. Functioning as a oating lighthouse to mark the mouth of the river from 1951 to 1979, this red-hulled vessel returned to the museum in late 2022 after an extensive renovation. Big things are also on the horizon for CRMM as a whole: e museum recently announced it is moving forward on a $30 million expansion of its campus that will feature a second exhibit hall. Make Way For:

THE WRECK OF PETER IREDALE

Departing from Astoria, and making way towards the greater Paci c to the west, your cruise will take you rst by Warrenton and darling little Hammond, where you can nd another very accessible boat launch, before you sail on by Fort Stevens State Park. Sprawling 4,300 acres, this park contains expansive beaches, hiking trails, campgrounds, and a picturesque lake, and marks the site of a military installation once used to guard the mouth of the Columbia River. e fort saw service for 84 years, from the Civil War to World War II, and much of the remaining battery can be explored. e park’s South Jetty viewing platform located at the northern edge of the park, and at almost the northernmost point of the state, is an excellent spot to watch ships as they enter and exit the bar, a journey that for centuries has been known to be treacherous in this larger area known as the Graveyard of the Paci c. ( ough the construction of jetties, continual dredging of the bar, and GPS advancements have made this stretch much less treacherous for modern-day vessels, do still keep a weather eye out in these waters!) Fittingly, the park is perhaps best known as the site of the wreck of the Peter Iredale, a four-masted steel barque sailing vessel that ran ashore on October 25, 1906, on the Clatsop Spit about four miles south of the Columbia River channel. ough the ship has been further broken up by wind, surf, and sand that have worn away at her remains, there is still plenty left of her massive hull to marvel at on the beach. Heading further south, the rugged and rocky coastline is peppered by such soft sandy stretches as those found at DeLaura Beach, Strawberry Knoll, and Sunset Beach, before reaching Gearheart. In addition to the town’s two landmark golf courses—the 9-hole Highlands at Gearhart and the 18-hole Gearheart Golf Links— this laid-back enclave is home to the McMenamin’s Gearheart Hotel, an old-school style beach lodge that o ers up a bevy of dining options, such as the Sand Trap Pub, an excellent spot to refuel after hitting the links or doing some beach combing.

Located just 2.5 miles south, you’ll nd Seaside, Oregon, a town that fully embraces its kitschy, beachy-cool vibe. Coming from the oceanside, the Necanicum River estuary dissects the downtown, and is a fun route to explore via kayak or tender. e Quatat Park Boat launch is a great on-and-o spot for those small craft as it is located mere steps from the action going on the main drag, Broadway Street. ere, the kids will be begging to ride the classic carousel at the Seaside Carousel mall, or adults might instead seek out the Times eatre & Public House nearby. Half brewery, half theater, the popular spot is home to the Sisu Beer that is brewed on-site, as well as to a snack-friendly menu highlighted by such favorites as Sriracha candied bacon, fried dill pickle chips, garlic tru le fries, and pretzel knots. TILLAMOOK ROCK LIGHTHOUSE

Leaving the sandier stretches behind as you wind along the rugged coastline, you’ll spot the dramatic Tillamook Head, a towering, almost-1,000-foot-high cli that marked the furthest point west surveyed by William Clark and Meriweather Lewis during their famed expedition, and today is a part of Ecola State Park. Over the course of a 3.6-mile loop trail that leads to the headland's tip, hikers can take in the same breathtaking viewpoint that is rumored to have inspired the following words from Captain Clark: “I behold the grandest and most pleasing prospect which my eyes ever surveyed.”

Hiking a cionados can also spy the fabled Tillamook Rock Lighthouse from trails accessed from within the park, or the views of this island lighthouse are nothing short of spectacular from the water. Originally built in 1881, the 133-foot-tall outpost also known as “Terrible Tilly” seemingly juts straight up from its rocky outcropping located one mile west of Tillamook Head. It helped guide sailors around its inhospitable, wave-battered perch all the way until 1957, when the cost to maintain and transport goods and supplies to the location was deemed too expensive and it was decommissioned. Now privately owned, there’s no going inside, perhaps only enhancing its aura of mystery. Meet KATIE BOHOCKY, the new executive director now leading the charge at the Recreational Boating Association of Washington.

NWY: You recently took the helm of the Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW)—welcome! Tell our readers what you are most excited to bring to your new role.

KB: I am excited to share my expertise and experience with RBAW. Initially, I will take on a tactical role and eventually grow into strategic and public relations roles. Under the leadership of RBAW’s volunteer board, I will help grow RBAW’s membership, revenue base, and geographical presence across the state of Washington.

NWY: What are a few reasons why you think boaters should join RBAW if they haven’t already?

KB: To help amplify the voice and interests of recreational boaters that contribute to an $8 billion industry in our state. Whether that is for policy and legislation that a ect boaters, communication and education for boaters and state agencies, or to help preserve and grow boating opportunities, there are lots of reasons to get involved with RBAW!

NWY: Over the past few years, RBAW has helped spearhead the Mind the Zone safety awareness campaign on Lake Union. How do you expect this campaign to evolve in the years to come?

KB: RBAW is proud to have been selected to create and run this safety and awareness campaign in summer 2022 (funded by the state of Washington) that was then extended through the summer of 2024 by the city of Seattle. We will continue to advocate for safe waters, open for all to enjoy responsibly—and look for ways to evolve the message to reach even more users of Lake Union.

NWY: The boating community is very invested in the rehabilitation of Lakebay Marina: What are the next steps in that project?

KB: RBAW traces its founding to the e orts of its members to purchase Sucia Island in the San Juans and donate the property to the State of Washington as one of the world’s nest marine parks. Our goal is to renovate the Lakebay property with new upland parking facilities, install restrooms, replace all the docks, and rebuild the boat ramp. When these renovations are complete our plan is to transfer the property, like Sucia, to Washington State Parks for long-term management. The renovations

needed are signi cant and will cost millions of dollars that we hope to cover with grants, private donations, and public dollars. To date we have already raised over $3 million, and we will likely need another $5 million to complete the project. Looking forward, we’re seeking federal, state and private monies to help fund more improvements to get this South Sound gem ready. We have begun by removing the old docks and fuel tanks and we are currently working on the master development plan that will identify all the improvements needed and the timeline for providing them.

NWY: In addition to safety campaigns, and the preservation of boating grounds, RBAW is heavily invested in promoting boating issues in the legislature. Which issues are currently top of mind for the upcoming session?

KB: Washington boaters pay some of the highest annual vessel taxes, so we’re always focused on fair and equitable treatment of boaters and how those taxes are used to create better boating in our state. We are actively working with the Department of Revenue on their process to calculate the value of vessels in hopes of treating longer-owned boats more fairly. These two topics are top of mind for RBAW’s 2024 priorities.

About the Expert: A er graduating from the University of Washington, Tacoma, with my bachelor’s degree, I was in search of my new career. I stumbled upon a path of working with non-pro t associations and fell in love. For over 17 years now, I have been working as an executive director, managing associations’ daily activities and helping boards of directors ensure that associations achieve their missions and visions. I earned my Certi ed Association Executive (CAE) credential in 2017, which is the marker of a committed association professional who has demonstrated the wide range of knowledge essential to manage an association in today’s challenging environment. Learning the recreational boating industry is fascinating, interesting, and fun! Developing lasting relationships with passionate and caring volunteers is very ful lling. Plus, advocating for recreational boating interests and issues is such a rewarding challenge. I am excited for the future of RBAW, the future of recreational boating, and the legacies RBAW will create for future generations to enjoy. I cannot imagine a better job! Summer Magic

DOUG HANSEN re ects on two of summer’s most memorable races—Corinthian Yacht Club’s Moonlight Race across Lake Washington and the Paci c International Ton Championship in Bellingham Bay.

There is something whimsical about sailboat racing, be it the connection to nature, the isolation from the outside world, or the rapport with the sea; there is a reason that so many hotel lobbies are lled with pictures of sailboats. The Corinthian Yacht Club Moonlight Race is one of these magical races that has something special, and it also holds an exceptional spot for me, being it was my rst sailboat race 20-something years ago. Although its origins date back to the 1950s, in recent decades, the race was pulled from the calendar due to the logistical challenges of running an evening race on the lake, but there has always been a hankering to bring her back. Two years ago, a grassroots group of lake sailors wanting to get out on the water with other boats for an evening sail did just that.

Now an o cial part of the summer racing calendar, the Moonlight Race is still gaining traction, but I’ve been hard-pressed to nd someone who didn’t have a fantastic time taking part. The racecourse is simple and takes the eet on a tour of Lake Washington, a severely underutilized racing area. The start line is just o of Leschi Marina. From there, the eet sails north under the east span of the 520- oating bridge, continuing to a buoy near the Magnuson Park boat launch, and then back to Leschi via the same east-span passage.

This time around, the eet featured a mix of the Lake Washington-based one-design classes—four San Juan 24s, a Thunderbird, a Thistle, a J/24, and a J/70, plus a guest appearance from a Melges24 that joined us

from Seattle Yacht Club. To keep things simple, it was scored as a single-class race, leaving the egos at the dock and letting everyone just go out on the water for a beautiful evening of sailing.

My wife Shelagh, her father Charlie, and I took to the water on a borrowed J/70 and we could not have asked for a more pleasant race— it was all shorts and bare feet with the occasional refreshing splash of water over the deck. A beautiful northwesterly wind took us around the course, and other than a few shi y tacks under the bridge, it was smooth sailing. The picture in my mind of the kite run to the nish as the sun set behind the city will undoubtedly stick with me for a long time. To anyone who enjoys sailboat racing in beautiful conditions, put the Moonlight Race on your calendar for next year!

While on the topic of whimsical Salish Sea summer races, we cannot fail to mention the venerable Paci c International Ton Championship, or as we call it today, PITCH. Hosted by our friends to the north at the Bellingham Yacht Club, the regatta has been a mainstay on the Northwest racing calendar for nearly half a century and continues to deliver the great racing and good times that it is known for.

This year's event brought boats out of the woodwork, elding three separate handicap eets racing PHRF and an ever-growing, J/70 one-design eet comprising a mix of boats from Orcas Island and the Seattle eets.

The weekend kicked o with a beautiful day of racing in the picture-perfect Bellingham Bay

breeze, and all eets got four races on the board. Sunday was a di erent kind of fun, with the heavy breeze making for challenging conditions and pushing sailors well beyond their comfort zones but rewarding those that could keep their heads screwed on straight.

At the end of the regatta, Andrew Loe took the top step of the podium in the J/70 eet with an impressive 13 points out of nine races for the series in a hugely competitive eet, notably taking the win in the nal four races of the weekend in heavy air conditions. In PHRF 1, Dave Stephan and his crew onboard the dialed-in Beneteau 36.7 Vitesse put on a fantastic demonstration of consistency and an absolute masterclass of how to sail in Bellingham Bay, bringing home seven wins out of seven races. PHRF 2 was a tight-fought battle with Orcas Island legend Betsy Wareham taking the win over the crew aboard the equally legendary Santa Cruz 27 vessel, Wild Rumpus PHRF 3 saw another dominating performance by Gabe Hill on his San Juan 24 Juan Solo. He racked up a row of rst places that set him a step above the rest of the scrappy eet of San Juans and an ubercool international Folkboat.

The slogan for PITCH is “come for the wind, stay for the party,” and this year's event embodied the absolute essence of what it is all about—fantastic wind and fantastic competition in a fantastic venue hosted by one of the most welcoming yacht clubs in the region. It's no wonder that this regatta has that special something that is o en imitated but rarely duplicated.

The Dark Side

Crafted with an alluring mix of aquavit, white vermouth, Aperol, and bright citrus, this Icelandic-inspired cocktail will brighten up even the darkest of fall days.

If you’ve ever visited Reykjavík, Iceland, in the winter, you know the sun doesn’t come up. It’s virtually 24 hours of darkness. Sometimes it can feel like that here in the Paci c Northwest—when the sunshine declines and the chill and rain appear. But no need to get discouraged. With summer and frequent boating in our rearview mirror, now is the perfect time to enjoy the “24 Hours of Darkness” cocktail. Inspired by the land of ice and re, this crisp, savory, and palate cleansing drink is featured in my book: A Bartender’s Guide to the World: Stories and Cocktails from 75 Places, which I assembled with master mixologist Lauren Mote. Apart from Icelandic beer and white Russians, aquavit is quite popular with Icelanders. It’s a delicious liquor from Scandinavia with di erent styles across the Nordic nations and Iceland. The dry, distilled spirit is avored with caraway and sometimes dill and coriander, making it an ideal companion to the white vermouth, Aperol, and citrus that rounds out this mid-proof cocktail. You can also dress up the drink in a dark moody glass to celebrate the ghouls and goblins that will pay us a visit on Halloween night.

24 Hours of Darkness

Makes 1 cocktail

¾ ounce white vermouth

¾ ounce aquavit

¾ ounce Aperol

¾ ounce fresh grapefruit juice

¼ ounce fresh lemon juice

2 dashes grapefruit bitters

Garnish: grapefruit twist

To a shaker filled with ice, add the vermouth, aquavit, Aperol, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and bitters. With some force, shake hard for 5 seconds. Using a small fine-mesh bar sieve to catch the loose ice chips, double strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. For the garnish, remove a nice piece of peel from a washed grapefruit. Using a paring knife, trim the edge of the peel on all sides. Then twist to express the oil over the cocktail, drop the peel into the glass, and serve.
