After Heroic Relaunch, American Magic’s Prada Cup Run Ends Early

Despite returning in time for the semifinals just days after enduring a disastrous capsizing that nearly sank their racing yacht, the American Magic team bowed out early from the Prada Cup tournament in New Zealand after losing to Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team on January 30. As a result, the U.S. team, representing the New York Yacht Club, will not compete in the 36th America’s Cup race this month against the defending champions, Emirates Team New Zealand. The loss ends a dramatic series of events for the American Magic team’s AC75 hydrofoil monohull Patriot, which had suffered serious damage in a crash on January 17 during a round robin race in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbor. During a tacking maneuver on the final mark, a sudden gust of wind struck the boat, causing it to pitch upward, heel over, and slam down on its port side. While no one was injured in the capsizing, the impact punched a hole in the hull just ahead of Patriot’s port hydrofoil arm, nearly sinking the boat. With help from the New Zealand Coast Guard and many of the competing crews, Patriot was saved and returned to American Magic hangar for emergency repairs. After some feverish patchwork occurring day and night over the next nine days, Patriot re-emerged on the water in time for the semifinals. However, the boat failed to win any of its four races against the Luna Rossa team. Terry Hutchinson, skipper and executive director of the American Magic team, remained upbeat despite the setback. “We need to recognize the heroic effort by everybody in the Auckland community that came forward to rescue Patriot from despair,” he said at a post-crash press conference. “They were spectacular. When you think about that family, our sailing community, it was awesome to see the show of support.” At press time, the INEOS Team UK and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were set to face off on February 22 to determine the winner of the Prada Cup, which will then take on New Zealand’s team for the 2021 America’s Cup to be held March 6-21.

Volvo Penta to Release Joystick Controlled Docking System

24

This spring, one of the most difficult and delicate yachting maneuvers—docking—may get a little easier with a new GPS-based joystick system being offered by Volvo Penta. The company’s Assisted Docking system debuted in January at the virtual CES show to much maritime fanfare for its ability to automate the process and compensate for unpredictable docking variables, such as tide, wind speed, and currents. The module’s new software makes it easier to move the boat in a straight line or maneuver in close quarters by calculating how these conditions can impact drive angles. “Joystick-controlled docking systems have been around a while,” said Larry Lougheed, service manager of Seattle’s Coastal Marine Engines. “But this self-docking unit, which uses GPS for positioning, is totally new.” The docking system can also be installed as an upgradeable option for Volvo Penta IPS-equipped boats, as well as a retrofit for IPS boats, which the company said will require a software upgrade and a new antenna. The updated software merges Volvo Penta’s Dynamic Positioning System with a “human-machine interface” (HMI), providing control of a boat’s electronics, engine, propulsion, sensors, and navigation through a joystick. The enhanced control will make it easier to keep the craft standing still, rotate around a fixed point, and adjust alignment with micro-repositioning. While the system will not be fully automatic, it will provide added stability and fine-tuning of a captain’s joystick docking commands to keep the boat on course.

Yannick Bestaven Wins Ninth Vendée Globe In the most competitive finish in Vendée Globe history, Yannick Bestaven, the French skipper of Maître Coq IV, was named the overall winner of the ninth edition of the race after sailing around the world in 80 days—plus 3 hours, 44 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be exact. A total of three boats crossed the finish line on the final day, all within a span of about 8 hours. The final time of Maître Coq IV’s late January finish, at Les Sables d’Olonne in France, was shortened by about 10 hours to compensate for Bestaven’s search-and-rescue efforts for fellow sailor Kevin Escoffier, off the coast of South Africa in late November. Escoffier’s IMOCA-class boat, the PRB, suffered catastrophic hull damage and sank on the race’s 22nd day, requiring the skipper to escape safely on a life raft. A total of four skippers were called to assist in Escoffier’s rescue, including Bestaven, and all were compensated for the extra time required. The adjusted time eventually placed Bestaven 2 hours and 31 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Charlie Dalin and 6 hours and 40 minutes ahead of Louis Burton, who took third place. Citing the reason for his victory in the Vendée Globe, which featured a record high field of 33 skippers, Bestaven said his main quality was “stubbornness,” which he also described as his main flaw. The race was the winning skipper’s first navigation through the treacherous southern Indian Ocean, where he excelled, taking the third-place spot at Australia’s Cape Leeuwin. Bestaven later took the lead around Cape Horn, but faced slack winds off southern Brazil, which shortened his lead time. He fought back while making good time past the Azores and was able to accelerate toward the western coast of France ahead of a low-pressure system. Bestaven’s illustrious career has spanned 20 years, with a victory in the 2001 Mini Transat and two wins in the Transat Jacques Vabre. In the 2008 Vendée Globe, however, he was forced out of the race within the first 24 hours after his boat was dismasted on the Bay of Biscay. 26

BoatUS Celebrates Recreational Victories in 2020 While most of us have a dim view of 2020, the Boat Owners Association of the United States (BoatUS) celebrated the new year by recognizing some notable accomplishments, in spite of the general lockdown gloom. The organization took part in a number of debates and helped foster legislation in 2020 concerning recreational boaters across the country, from environmental restoration programs to the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in state waters. One highlight was the reauthorization of the Sport Fish Restoration Program, a user-pay/user-benefit program providing education programs, fishing and conservation efforts, boating access sites, and law enforcement by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. BoatUS’s lobbying efforts to save key parts of the government fishing restoration program will continue. Other environmental causes taken on by BoatUS included the Water Resources Development Act and the Great American Outdoor Act. By promoting the greater awareness of the impact of recreational boating on water resource conservation, BoatUS advocated for setting aside funds targeting the need to improve boating navigation for smaller harbors. The group also worked with the Outdoor Recreational Roundtable to secure up to $9 billion to support national parks and public lands over the next five years.

I N ME M O RI A M

Eight Bells: Derek M. Campbell Known throughout the Pacific Northwest as a passionate sailor, an inspirational leader, and a formidable competitor, Derek M. Campbell passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2020, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative disorder. He was 61. Derek’s illustrious sailing history includes campaigns ranging from dinghies to sleds. He was highly respected by world-class sailors for his successful effort to establish the 49er Fleet in Seattle and his participation with Scott Smith in the 1997 49er World Championship. He was also a highly proficient race program organizer, a dedicated crew member, a collaborative team player, and an accomplished helmsman on board numerous winning big boat programs in the Pacific Northwest. Derek was the 1973 OK Dinghy National Champion, but his true love for dinghies was the 505, in which he campaigned in numerous Continental and World championships. Despite graduating from the University of Washington in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering, Derek ironically built a 30-year career doing almost everything other than structural engineering. Over time, he rose to program management and chief engineer positions at Boeing, where he managed several complex Department of Defense and commercial projects. His career involved multi-national travel to Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and locations across the United States. Derek’s charismatic leadership fostered successful professional business teams and maximized the skills and capabilities of every team member. Soccer was also a big part of Derek’s life. He spent decades competing with multiple men’s soccer teams, often playing more than three days a week. Derek paid his enthusiasm forward by coaching Ballard Youth Soccer teams for more than 10 years, again building successful programs, helping young people realize their goals and develop their passions. “When he was showing me his first 505 in the garage of his Greenlake 30

rental, he was finishing the rigging process,” said longtime friend Craig Leweck, editor and publisher of Scuttlebutt. “To me, it looked like a beautiful spaceship. Little did I know this was just the beginning of a life together sharing many ‘spaceships.’” Many of Derek’s close friends recall that they were always excited and happy to be sailing with him. “His infectious enthusiasm and optimistic outlook was only slightly overshadowed by his intelligence,” Leweck said. “A truly wonderful soul who enriches the lives of all who know him.” “Derek’s spirit will live with me and my family forever,” said his friend, Jay Renehan, an engineer at Boeing. “Derek was a person who made everyone better. Whether it was sailing dinghies or keelboats, on the soccer pitch, or coaching kids’ soccer, he got the best performance out of everyone.” Olympic sailor Charlie McKee described Derek as “an exceptionally well-rounded sailor,” and the “spark” that helped create 49er sailing in the U.S. “He would get a gleam in his eye; then, you knew he was going to make something happen. Knowing Derek, you knew it was going to be done right, and since he was involved, it was going to be fun. We are all fortunate to have been touched by him.” Derek had exhibited symptoms of MSA for more than 10 years, Leweck recalled, but the official diagnosis wasn’t made until August 2014. “By that time, some of the more aggressive symptoms were impacting him,” Leweck said, such as balance and motor skills. “As crappy as the disease was, Derek always maintained his fun disposition, sense of humor and appreciation for family, friends, and everyone helping him battle the disease’s symptoms.” Derek Campbell is survived by his loving wife Rana, daughter Kailey, and son Brent, who all shared Derek’s love of sailing and were active members in the Tasar Class boating community. He is also survived by his sister Carol Turek. Charitable donations made to the nonprofit group, Defeat MSA Alliance (defeatmsa.org), will be deeply appreciated by the Campbell family.

Maritimo M55 Featuring extensive entertainment areas, the Maritimo M55 fuses the latest advancements in motoryacht technology with the iconic features of the M-Series of the past.

Released months ahead of its expected launch date, the Maritimo M55 luxury yacht has hit the American market, garnering great interest in expected sales. The M55 is the latest addition to the Australian company’s line of M-Series, long-range flybridge yachts, featuring a variable deadrise hull, a deep keel, and a sharp bow entry with a flattened progression aft. One of the key features of the M55 is the enclosed, climate-controlled flybridge “sky lounge,” which incorporates a pair of flybridge lounging areas that can be easily converted to additional sleeping berths if required. This internal flybridge includes opening skylights, internal stairs, and an aft galley accessible via walk-around side decks. These side decks 36

are covered with free-flowing wing moldings, which integrate with the flybridge design, providing a wider beam and living space. The M55 has reimagined the idea of a practical deck space with its new “adventure deck” lower-cockpit design with space for watersports activities. The adventure deck also includes an option to be opened with electric actuators to unveil a fully lined, 9’10” tender garage, with a 250-kilogram davit to conceal tenders away from the platform of the forward deck. Another lower cockpit option for the adventure deck is a 4’6” extended platform to create extra space. One step up above the lower cockpit, the upper cockpit features alfresco

deck space, with easy access to deep walk-through side decks. The upper cockpit is sheltered by the extended flybridge headliner, providing overhead protection in the alfresco area. An optional roll-down isinglass clear cover can provide 360-degree coverage for the deck space in inclement weather. The M55’s aft galley seamlessly connects to the upper cockpit deck and an enormous salon lounging area. Two-stage vista sliding windows can convert the salon to an indoor/outdoor configuration as needed, injecting light and air to the salon and flybridge.

Belowdecks, the M55 offers three spacious staterooms and two en suites, with a full-beam king in the master stateroom, an offset queen in the forward stateroom, and a twin single in the starboard guest stateroom. The lower companionway includes space for either combination or separate washer and dryer options. Using direct-shaft drive technology, the M55 is powered by standard twin Volvo Penta D11-670MHP engines, with an option to choose Scania or CAT engines up to 1,000 metric horsepower.

Get Your Skin Onboard Stave off winter’s harmful effects with these essential skincare tips from local style expert—and new columnist—ANDREW HOGE.

Maintaining an effective skincare routine is a good rule of thumb for just about everyone, especially those who spend their days at sea and, honestly, it’s easier than ever to find cleansers, lotions, and serums on store shelves or at the click of a button. While having options is generally considered a good thing, it can be difficult for the skincare novice to find what works best for their skin type, not to mention the added care and attention required during the harsher winter months. Luckily there are three easy adjustments you can make to your routine so you don’t get left out in the cold. Not all sunscreen is created equal. Slathering on sunscreen in summer is a no-brainer, but it would behoove you to continue this precautionary measure during wintertime as well. The sun’s powerful ultraviolet rays—specifically the UVA and UVB variety—can cause skin damage and premature aging and are generally most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you believe you’re out of harm’s way during the winter and early spring months, think again. The season’s overcast skies can trap and intensify these rays while the water surrounding a boat can reflect them back at you. What’s a seafarer to do? Stock the cabin with sunscreen made with zinc oxide. This chemical is favored by dermatologists because it actually works to reflect the sun’s harmful radiation without producing a chemical reaction on your skin. Try the SheerZinc SPF 30 (dermaquestinc.com) or Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 (credobeauty.com) that comes in a range of tinted options. Don’t forget to give your lips some love with the Hydra Volume Lip Mask SPF 15 by Soleil Toujours (penelopeandthebeautybar. com) that features added plumping benefits. Hydrating is a form of good manners. The frigid, wind-whipped air leaves much to be desired when it comes to adequate hydration but the right moisturizer, along with a personalized and consistent skincare routine, can help maintain your moisture balance, reduce redness, and infuse your skin with additional nutrients. Try the 54

Lala Retro Whipped Cream from Drunk Elephant (drunkelephant.com) that features six luxurious oils. And if sustainability is top-of-mind, snag the Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer from Biossance (biossance. com); a company on a mission to create beauty products without harming the environment and animals. For a more indulgent experience, use a sheet mask—a longtime fixture in Korean beauty routines—that have exploded in popularity over the past several years; showing up everywhere from grocery store shelves to our Instagram feeds. Perhaps the most diverse selection of these nutrient-rich marvels in the Pacific Northwest can be found at K Banana (hellokbanana. com) in University Village in Seattle, where owner Liz Kang Yates offers over 100 sheet masks in her K-beauty boutique. Don’t hate, exfoliate. There are many reasons to exfoliate regularly; chief among them are clearer pores and increased cell turnover. Throughout winter, exfoliation can be exceptionally useful because removing dry, dead skin cells can allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper and become more effective. But gone are the days of gritty, ineffective salves, instead opt for a chemical exfoliant for more effective results. Seattle-based Bio-Therapeutic (biotherapeuticspa.com) offers the lightweight Aquafuse Foam Peel that gently exfoliates and removes pore congestion. Alternatively, try the highly effective Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel from Dr. Dennis Gross (drdennisgross.com), which utilizes five AHA/BHAs to lift away impurities, reduce oil, and even skin tone. A proper skincare routine requires some flexibility to evolve and adapt to our environment. Luckily, you can apply these simple tips and get that dry skin overboard. TI G H T LI N E S BY MARK YUASA

See You In Sekiu Columnist MARK YUASA on chasing the winter Chinook in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The winter salmon fisheries are regarded as one of the best times to pursue resident Chinook in local marine waterways, but the 2021 season has painted a much different picture with dwindling fishing options. Central Puget Sound, located in sight of the Seattle skyline, shut down after just 18 days of fishing in January due to skyrocketing Chinook catch rates. That left the Puget Sound south of the Narrows Bridge as the sole choice (and those waters are a known ghost town for Chinook). But brighter days are on the horizon as Sekiu—a small, rural fishing community in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca—opens their door to winter Chinook opportunities from March 1 to April 30. Based on historical data, right now is the optimum time frame to bring your boat to Sekiu where schools of winter Chinook have a tendency to congregate from late winter through early spring. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife catch data during the 2019 season showed 312 legal-size hatchery winter Chinook caught in March and 568 in April; in 2018, 342 were landed in March and 118 in April. (Legal-size are hatchery chinook more than 22 inches long.) Salmon are lured into the western Strait to feed and fatten up on abundant schools of 3- to 4-inch candlefish and larger-sized 5- to 7-inch herring baitfish, so it’s not uncommon for anglers to catch winter chinook in the 8- to 13-pound range with a few hitting 20-plus pounds. The journey to the fishing grounds is a short boat ride from the floating docks surrounding Sekiu, and the key to success is locating baitfish schools—usually most concentrated around the sandy and rocky structured bottom. On an ebb tide, drop your fishing line just around the corner from the Sekiu breakwater at a place known as the “Caves” in 90 to 150 feet of water. The current will push you in a westerly direction toward Eagle Bay just off the Hoko River. Once you arrive at the bay, head back to the Caves and repeat the process or shorten it if the baitfish are concentrated in a 56

certain area. On a flood tide, head east of Clallam Bay to the Slip Point buoy. Here the drift will push your boat easterly toward Mussolini Rock and Cod Fish Bay. Try to stay in 90 to 175 feet of water, but again— it also depends on where the schools of baitfish are located. The eastern fishing boundary line is Low Point at mouth of the Lyre River to the mouth of the Sekiu River on the western edge. The most effective fishing technique is downrigger trolling with a variety of spoons, plugs, plastic squids, or bait like herring. Others prefer drifting or motor mooching with herring or jigging with a Point Wilson Dart or Buzz Bomb jigs. Working your presentation along drop-offs, underwater structure, and ledges where baitfish tend to congregate during a certain tidal movement is the key to success. Lastly, there’s no need to rush out for the daybreak bite and often the best fishing period is dictated by tides and location. If the fish bit at a certain time of the day, it’s likely they’ll bite again the following day, only an hour later. There are two main resorts at Sekiu—Olson’s (olsons-resort.com) and Van Riper’s (vanripersresort.com)—that offer all the amenities needed to fish, plus boat moorage, launch facilities, fuel, campsites, and accommodations. I’m planning on making the pilgrimage to this mecca for winter salmon fishing enthusiasts. I’ll see you on the water soon! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Pickling Pot of Politics Murky waters: Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN explores how a boating bill flows through the legislative process. As a political science major, I vividly remember the lesson from school that lawmakers fit into three tidy categories when they decide how they will vote on an issue. There’s the trustee model, the delegate model, and the politico model. As an undergrad, I found myself relieved just how tidy politics and lawmaking must be. That’s funny. While these archetypes exist in the classroom, lawmakers take a much more nuanced look to how they decide on bills. Hopefully, you know by now that bills are just ideas with a name associated with them that are part of the legislative process. As we go to print, 903 of these ideas, err bills, have been introduced in the first of the two-year legislative session. So, how in fact do lawmakers keep track of the different issues? Do they read every bill before they vote? (Answer: No.) Whom do they listen to? Let’s dissect these questions one by one. First, let’s define some terms. As taught in political science classes, the trustee model is the approach lawmakers take when constituents are not paying attention to specific issues. Think technical and non-controversial matters. The delegate model adopts the mindset that the lawmaker is a vessel for the constituents’ whims on areas where voters are paying attention. And then, there’s the politico model. This hybrid model means that lawmakers act like a trustee sometimes and a delegate other times. Clear as mud, right? Like with the rest of what was taught in the classroom with teachers who have never worked in politics, leave those notes behind as we enter into the twilight zone of legislative activity and success. Let’s use House Bill 1107 as an example, which would allow the state to sell permits to visiting boats put up for charter when a skipper is required. Rep. Mike Chapman, Democrat from the Port Townsend and Port Angeles areas, is the prime sponsor with Rep. Barkis, leading Republican (“Ranking Member”) when the bill be heard. Instead of the three type of lawmaker models, I would encourage you to think more around signaling 58

and tells. For signaling, focus on who is the prime sponsor. Are they in the majority party? Check. Are they in a district where constituents care? Yes. Which lawmaker signed the form as second on the bill? Is that person from the opposing party? Better be. Now, think about the chair of the committee. Ultimately, he or she must care enough about the measure to use the precious time (remember, time drives many decisions in Olympia) in that committee to hear the bill and to then move it out to the next step in the multi-layered legislative process. As I hit send on this column, this bill to sell permits has not moved out of the committee. Keep saying those rosaries. The prime sponsor will need the majority of the committee to support it to pass it along, but even with a majority if the vote is split, the issue can be seen as controversial (time suck) and lose the priority status needed. Plus, we need the chair of the committee’s support. If he doesn’t want to expose his colleagues to a bad vote or doesn’t personally care about this issue, it’s good night. Other higher profile, less time draining items will box out measures that suffer a split vote in committee. When it comes to who do legislators listen to, keep in mind that pressure exists from a variety of sources. Constituents back home, church members, family members, party leaders, donors, lobbyists, and colleagues who need something later in session are also possible voices. Add core values to the mix and combine all into a pickling pot of inner activity for the legislator. Sound like fun? Ha. As a lawmaker texted me, however, “This is the business we’ve chosen.” Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

ASK N I G E L BY NIGEL BARRON

Lighten The Load It’s time for some spring cleaning: Expert NIGEL BARRON on how to keep your boat organized and functioning at its best. I’m confident that, at some point, the pandemic represents a number of pounds added to my waist. I’ve had to begrudgingly make some lifestyle changes to move in the right direction. The same is true of many boats. As we start to use our boats more, we often relax our cleaning and maintenance. So, our boats tend to get heavier. You could just raise the waterline to account for this, but all that does is mask a bigger issue. I’m a big advocate for keeping any boat, sail or power, as light as possible. In both cases, it increases efficiency. A light boat is a clean boat because you’re not collecting clutter. I like to think about picking the boat up, turning it upside down, giving it a good shake, and looking closely at everything falling out. Going through all the drawers and hidden compartments, where things collect, can be gratifying. One obvious place to start looking is in your spares and tools. If your entire boat is standard, you don’t need the metric tools on board. Do you need Phillips and flathead screwdrivers if everything is a square drive? A multi-bit screwdriver could replace all of them. Over the course of a refit on a race boat, it becomes evident that every nut will be one of two sockets. Do we really need to carry that cool socket set on board? If you’re mostly day sailing or going for weekends, you probably don’t need the complete oil change kit. Same goes for the soft goods on board. I’d previously written about taking a lot of the soft goods off the boat for the winter months. If you’re not going on overnight trips, you don’t need all the bedding on board. Are you really going to make a full Sunday roast, or can that galley equipment live in a nice plastic tub and go on the boat when necessary? Your water tanks don’t need to be full if you’re not using the onboard water. After considering the easy stuff to save weight, there are some other changes you can make to the boat to lighten things up. For a sailboat, there are a variety of options for rigging with newer high-tech lines or lighter weight blocks. Pay special attention to the mast, one pound at the masthead on a 35- to 40-foot sailboat is like subtracting 7 to 10 pounds of ballast. Getting aggressive with weight loss in the mast will make a noticeable difference in the way the boat sails. If you’ve swapped out lights for LED, did you replace the wiring at the same time? A hundred feet of 16/2 wire is about 4 pounds lighter than 100 feet of 12/2 wire. Synthetic rigging is becoming more commonplace on sailboats. You certainly don’t have to go to the extreme of something like Future Fibres 60

ECSix rigging, but swapping out the backstay for a composite line is pretty simple and saves weight aloft. Batteries are one of the most significant weight-reduction options on a boat these days. Many race boats by their nature are light anyway, and they are going to lithium-ion batteries. There are not a lot of places you can easily remove 50 pounds. It does require some thinking and likely some modifications to your charging system. As a comparison, a standard Group 27 AGM battery weighs 63 pounds, and the equivalent sized lithium-ion weighs 33 pounds. There are other obvious advantages to lithium-ion such as the charge rate and the discharge rates. Lastly, once you removed weight, think about where that weight is. When we’re heading out for a day sail, we don’t bring fenders and dock lines with us. It’s just weight and more to trip on. Bring a couple of lines to get you back in the slip, but leave the heavy permanent lines on the dock. Boats will also ride differently with weight up high versus down low. I really like my plastic tubs full of stuff, so that we can move weight to the middle of the boat and down low while we’re out, and easily move the stuff around when we’re back at the dock. Even if you’re just motoring around, you’re still going to save on fuel, and in turn, enjoy getting out on the water all that much more. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. He is also the captain of Crossfire, a Reichel-Pugh designed and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

INTERNATIONAL P ORT OF CALL BY LORI EASTES

Escape To The Exumas The private serenity of this Bahamian oasis makes it the perfect yachting destination.

Experience a world defined by bath-temperature turquoise water and perhaps, the world’s most famous swimming pigs in The Exumas, a string of 365 islands and cays located in the Bahamas. When traveling to the Out Islands of the Bahamas, it’s important to note that this area is only accessible by boat or seaplane; the remote location and private serenity of The Exumas makes it the perfect yachting destination. Whether you’re going for a weekend getaway or a weeklong vacation, there is no better place to charter a yacht than The Exumas. Sprawling 120 miles southeast of the most populated Bahamian island of New Providence, it is a tropical hideaway reserved only for those who can find a way to get there. Begin your journey with a brief cruise through the Atlantic Ocean before entering this West Indian oasis. You will be left in awe of the natural beauty on Exumas, widely known for its luminous turquoise water with such aquatic brilliance that it can be seen from space. The brilliance is due to the shallow depths and the word Bahamas comes from Bajamar, which means “shallow water” in Spanish. 62

A popular destination for visitors, Big Major Cay is home to the world-famous pig beach. From the moment you approach the shoreline, you will be greeted by the island’s salty, four-legged inhabitants. Since the early 1990s, these four-legged celebrities have grown in numbers. Gracing the presence of visitors with their curly tails and wiggly noses, the pigs love peeping their heads through the water as they swim, most likely looking for a tasty treat. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Pig Beach is a must-see. For the real nature enthusiasts, head over to Leaf Cay to experience an even more wild animal encounter—welcome to “Iguana Island.” Leaf Cay is a private island owned by actor Nicholas Cage and the beach is home to dozens of wild iguanas. The well-fed reptiles will walk right up to you if offered a slice of bread or fruit. The water in the Bahamas is exceptionally calm, allowing for plenty of warm and sunny beaches to explore, like this one. For the adventure seekers, swim with wild nurse sharks at Compass Cay. Stand in 4- to 5-foot-deep water as the gentle nurse sharks swim leisurely

through the water. Don’t worry, these gentle giants will not hurt you; simply float adrift in the bright blue water as you’re graced by their presence. But, if the thought of swimming with sharks is unsettling, head over to Rachel’s Bubble Bath. The deep, crystal clear, azure water in the lagoon is a favorite. At mid to high tide, the waves crash over the surrounding rocks in a way that creates a natural jacuzzi. You’ll feel as though you are swimming in an ocean of champagne. A staple in the local cuisine, conch is used in just about every dish cooked in the Bahamas. Whether it’s conch burgers, blackened conch, cracked conch, grilled conch, or conch fritters, the island cuisine is sure to satisfy your taste buds. On the healthier side, conch salad is made with just lemon juice, conch, fresh tomatoes, onion, green pepper, and cucumber. Devouring these fresh fruits and vegetables on the sundeck of your yacht is truly an unforgettable experience. There’s nothing quite like a view of the bright blue ocean as you dig into a freshly prepared local Bahamian lunch. Nothing goes together like a sunny day and an ice-cold beverage. Sip on something sweet as you cruise to Musha Cay for some afternoon

snorkeling. Many of these islands are owned by distinguished celebrities, and David Copperfield owns this island. The lush tropical landscape and warm blue water make for the perfect island getaway. Musha Cay is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in The Exumas. Throw on a mask and snorkel down to the underwater statue, where you’ll find a mermaid perched on a bench with a real-life piano! Lori Eastes grew up on the water in Seattle and married a fellow boater. Together they love to travel the world, exploring unique destinations. She is thrilled to be on the team at Worth Avenue Yachts because chartering private yacht vacations combines everything she loves: party planning, travel, and boats. With a background in hospitality, Lori is committed to providing an unparalleled experience for her clients. R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

On The Horizon DOUG HANSEN previews the spring racing season—from the Center Sound Series, presented by the Corinthian Yacht Club (check out their renovated home!), to a brand-new sailing race around the Sound. While a lot of the landscape has changed, the constant will of the sailing community to adapt and push forward has shone through this past year and even fueled some amazing opportunities for sailors to participate in events and styles of sailing that they otherwise might never consider. The past year brought an abundance of short-handed races as well as some new events all stemming from our community’s desire to spend time on the water. While there is still a long way to go and a lot of challenges to overcome, it is exciting to finally be given the opportunity to look towards a cautiously optimistic sailing season this year. As we continue to navigate the ever-changing “current plan,” one constant is that everyone wants to get back on the water to enjoy our sport and all of the amazing experiences that it invites into our lives. Kicking off the official 2021 spring season will be the Corinthian Yacht Club Center Sound Series (cycseattle.org/ Racing) in March. The three-race series runs the fleet up and down Puget Sound and invites all manner of keel boats to line up and blow off the dust (or, in the case of the past year, grind off the rust). The Series starts off with Blakely Rock on March 6, Scatchet Head on March 13, and Three Tree Point on March 27. While these traditional courses are the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time), recent years have shown that by shifting the course based on the wind makes for better racing than drifting towards a buoy in a hole. Expect the race committee to be quick to adapt if the conditions call for it. Corinthian Yacht Club has a supportive leadership and operational community that are committed to making this year racing season a reality. Without missing a beat, the month of April is stocked full of both keel boat and dinghy events including the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club’s Carol Pearl Blakely Rock Benefit that has attracted literally hundreds of boats in years past and looks to be on track this year. Expect to see a larger number of shorthanded participants in all of this year’s events as the majority of the organizers are adding the option moving forward as so many have caught the bug of solo and 66

double handed racing. A bit further down range, but worth talking about now, is a brand-new event from the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend, Washington. With the recent postponement of the legendary R2AK or Race to Alaska, the event organizers have pivoted towards a more local race and are even relaxing some of their steadfast rules to allow for more boats to come play in 2021. The Washington 360, or WA360 (nwmaritime.org/wa360) for those in the know, is a simple concept: Bring a boat to Port Townsend, sail south to the end of Puget Sound, then north to the border, and back to where you started. The rules are equally as simple. Do not use your engine and that’s about it. Interest is already spiking as would be R2AK hopefuls are shifting their focus and are looking to take on the new challenge. With some tricky requirements such as navigating Deception Pass without motor, not to mention sailing to Olympia in the often calm seas of summer, the gauntlet has been thrown down. The scheduled start kicks off on June 7 and for those of us that are stuck shoreside, we can live vicariously as a full race tracker is expected.

WELCOME TO THE CLUBHOUSE Seattle sailboat racing’s proverbial home of Corinthian Yacht Club has recently been returned to Shilshole after a major refit (see photos of the February 7 return by tug). The result of a years-long process with many thousands of hours of work and fundraising by a huge group of committed members, “The Refit” as it has become affectionately known, has given the club a new lease on life and an update for the new decade. Beginning with a dry dock period, then knocking out a full structural update of the hull and systems, continuing right up to the windows and siding, the project is wrapping up with interior upgrades now and will soon be ready to support the sailing community for the next 25 years.

Hoist The Ales With clever, nautical-inspired names that embrace our perch here on the Pacific, these stellar Northwest craft brews are sure to float your boat—even if March’s mercurial forecast is keeping you off that boat more days than not. Whether you weather the weather aboard or at home, let’s all raise a glass to the coming sunny days on the water when these ales are sure to taste just as good straight out of the boat cooler, too. Cheers!

Yacht Rocket Sour Ale Urban Family Brewing This passionfruit sour ale from Ballard-based Urban Family Brewing is kissed with coconut, making it a light and refreshing choice to serve on deck from spring into summer. Available in the Ballard taproom and for pick-up to go // 206.946.8533 // urbanfamilybrewing.com. Galeforce IPA Scuttlebutt Brewing Just one of many seafaring-inspired brews from this Everett brewmaster, the Galeforce IPA pulls inspiration from its name with an aggressive hop flavor, moderate malt body, and a pleasantly bitter flavor balanced by hints of citrus, pine, and grapefruit. Available at the Everett pub or taproom, or at area grocers such as QFC and Fred Meyer // 425.252.2829 // scuttlebuttbrewing.com.

Colossal Claude IPA Rogue Cheekily dedicated to fishing stories and crafted with a hearty dose of Cascade, Chinook, Citro, and Strata hops, this IPA from Rogue, a Newport, Oregon brewery, is definitely the one you want to sip while tales of the ones that got away are spun. Available locally at area grocers including Safeway, QFC and Bartell Drugstores // rogue.com. Vanishing Point IPA Ghostfish Brewing This well-balanced pale ale hails from Seattle’s Ghostfish Brewing, whose name was inspired by the bioluminescent waters of the Puget Sound and the famed creature that lurks in the briny deep. Featuring malt flavors, such as caramel and biscuit, mixed with classic hop notes, this award-winning brew is naturally gluten free, like the others offered at the SoDo brewery. Available at the SoDo taproom or at area grocers including Metropolitan Market and PCC Community Markets // 206.397.3898 // ghostfishbrewing.com. Sky Kraken Hazy Pale Ale Fremont Brewing Unleash the kraken! Lightly sweet and bitter, this Fremont Brewing IPA is balanced throughout with a medium-light body and smooth carbonation, making it an easy drinker,

no matter the occasion. (Friday at 5 p.m. in the galley sounds just right to us.) Available at the brewery’s Urban Beer Garden tasting room in Fremont, or at area grocers including QFC, Safeway and PCC Community Markets // 206.420.2407 // fremontbrewing.com. Octopus Ink Black IPA Pike Brewing Black as the stormy sea, this back-by-popular-demand IPA is brewed with an intriguing combination of Chinook, Centennial, Citra, and Simcoe hops, then dry hopped with Citra, Amarillo, and Simcoe. The master brewers at Pike Brewing say it pairs perfectly with blue cheese, black cod, and “the darkest days of the year.” Available at either of the Pike Place Market taprooms, or at area grocers including Town & Country Markets, Whole Foods and Metropolitan Market // 206.622.6044 // pikebrewing.com. Top Sail Imperial Porter Full Sail Brewing Another Oregon favorite, this Imperial-style porter is aged for months in bourbon barrels, giving it a rich and robust flavor well-suited to those damp spring nights. Available locally at specialty grocers including Total Wine & More and Ridgewood Bottle & Tap // 888.244.BEER // fullsailbrewing.com.

Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their well-found power or sailing yacht.

CHARTER OWNERSHIP PROGRAM WHY CHARTER?

WHY NW EXPLORATIONS?

YOUR BOAT CAN BE YOUR BUSINESS

PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE

When you purchase a boat and place it in charter you are forming a business. Up front you defer 8.7% sales tax on the boat and any subsequent equipment purchases. This adds up to HUGE Savings!

Our team of marine service technicians and detail staff will keep your yacht in pristine condition year round, so you never have to worry about repairs or cleaning. Your boat will be ready for you to just put your gear aboard and go cruising.

EARN CHARTER INCOME

EXPERIENCED BOATERS ONLY

By being in our charter fleet, this revenue offsets much of the operating expenses. You, as the owner, receive 60% of the charter fee, covering a percentage of moorage, maintenance, and insurance you would otherwise be paying out of pocket.

Our fleet is maintained to the highest standard and our charter guests reflect that standard. The qualifications we look for to skipper a vessel in our fleet are recent experience in similar size vessel, similar engine (twin or single) and similar waters.

CUT ANNUAL COSTS BY 20%-50% For a privately owned 46’ Grand Banks yacht (around $400,000), annual operating and moorage expenses can cost as much as $53,000 a year! But by adding your yacht to our charter fleet, you can cut that down by 20%-50%, on average. If you purchase your yacht through us, you’re deferring sales tax and saving money on your down payment.*

PREMIUM SERVICE When you put a boat in our fleet, you’re taking advantage of the resources and knowledge we’ve accumulated being in the business for over 30 years. As a charter owner, you become part of the NW Explorations family.

NOTE: Information provided for general purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Please consult your tax professional.

Call as at (800) 826-1430 for more details and let us help you through the process of becoming a charter boat owner.
