I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but there is nothing quite so spectacular, so stunning, nor so special as the cruising grounds provided by the North American western seaboard, is there? Take this issue as a prime example: We start in the wild confines of Alaska for Port of Call (pages 80-81), then travel south to the coastline of Canada for this month’s “Cruise Control” charter feature (pages 54-63). From the Gulf Islands to the Sunshine Coast to Desolation Sound, the idyllic scenery of British Columbia has long been adored by boaters; discover it anew this month aboard the dreamy new luxury charter yacht, SUMMERTIME II. Here in the Puget Sound, there are plenty of on-water adventures to be had via a bevy of beloved events—the Adventuress Cup sets sail on September 17 (more details on page 23); Boats Afloat returns to Lake Union (page 30); and the Wooden Boat Festival will once again draw aficionados to charming Port Townsend (page 24). Moving south along the shoreline once more, our longtime friend Peter Marsh checks in from Astoria, Oregon, with the fascinating tale of the Arrow 2 pilot boat. An iconic feature of waterfront life there for almost 50 years as she ferried pilots from ship to shore and back again, she has found new life after an extensive restoration. Read all about her tale starting on page 46. I sincerely hope this sunny September issue—which also includes a 1939 Elco listing straight out of the Art Deco era (see Broker’s Best on pages 42-43) and the anticipated 2023 arrival of the Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 to Denison Yachts (see pages 38-39)—sparks a new fervor for exploring both the farther reaches and familiar grounds that define our distinctive perch on the Pacific.

The century-old schooner the Adventuress is ready to raise her sails—and raise some funds. After the usual delays from Covid restrictions for the previous two years, the schooner will sail again on September 17 in its namesake Adventuress Cup race to support Sound Experience, a non-profit organization that offers classes in seamanship for children and teenagers interested in learning how sailing ships operate in the Salish Sea Launchedenvironment.inMainein1913, Adventuress was originally designed as a luxury schooner by Bowdoin B. Crowninshield and built for John Borden II, a wealthy businessman from Chicago. The maiden voyage took the schooner on an Arctic expedition to find a bowhead whale specimen for the American Museum of Natural History. Adventuress was later sent to the San Francisco Bay area for use over the next 30 years by bar pilots in the difficult currents of the Golden Gate.

Over the last three decades, more than 30,000 youths have manned the Adventuress, climbing her masts, raising sails, and setting the rigging, in both daylong and overnight sailing instruction programs. The young students also get to take turns at the helm, learn navigation skills, and experience what it’s like to work together as a Duringteam.the Adventuress Cup, participants can race their own sailboats or create virtual sailing teams, and take part in the pre-race powerboat parade. On-the-water racing will be organized as a mid-length distance race, using fixed marks for keelboats, and round-the-buoys races for any dinghies that choose to register. All starts and finishes will be made at the Shilshole breakwater. The Saturday race will begin in Seattle’s Shilshole Bay at 1 p.m. Those wishing to take part in the powerboats parade should muster at the north end of the Shilshole breakwater at 12:45 p.m., and then proceed behind the Adventuress, which will lead the boats to the race course by 1:30. While powerboats move to their designated viewing areas, the sailing races will commence between 2 and 5 p.m. Following the race, all participants are invited to meet at the Corinthian Yacht Club for a post-race celebration and the distribution of racing awards. There will also be a no-host bar and dinner options at the event, as well as opportunities to tour the Adventuress

Also new this year will be a “Woodworking Tent,” where audiences can see demonstrations of the many ways marine crafters have turned trees into sailing vessels. The festival will also hold its annual Lifetime Achievement Awards on Thursday, September 8, for those who have demonstrated exemplary service in support of the region’s maritime community. This year, the recipients will include the Hanke family, which has been part of the Port Townsend small-business boating community for three generations (with a 4th on the way), and boatbuilder and designer Steven Rander, founder of Schooner Creek Boat Works.

The Wooden Boat Festival is the largest such event in North America, with 300 boats and 100 presenters providing hands-on seminars about the craft of boatbuilding, as well as on-the-water events celebrating the region’s maritime history, and lessons to teach a new generation of kids about boating history. On the Green Boating Stage on Friday, September 9, Alex Borton of Solar Sal Boats will discuss the 1,400-mile-journey he and his father took through Alaska’s Inside Passage on a 100% solar-powered electric craft. Later that day, the stage will host the Inside Passage Decarbonizing Project’s “Golden Streamer Decarbonizer Awards,” which recognizes boaters who support alternative clean-vessel propulsion to help protect the sensitive waterways. On September 10, Seattle Boat Works’ Alex Wilken will discuss the latest advancement in electric and hybrid propulsion systems.

During each school year, the student athletes on the Husky Sailing Team travel around the country to compete in co-ed and women’s regattas within the ICSA Pacific Coast Conference. At the June ceremony, Husky Sailing Team co-captain Sam Delasanta said he will be the team’s fleet manager this school year. Crew member Maya Outhred will become the new captain of the team. The timing of the donations was particularly fortunate, considering the recent shakeups the Husky team has endured over the last few years. Earlier this year, the Northwest Intercollegiate Sailing Association, to which the team belongs, decided to dissolve itself following a series of cancelled competitions, remote learning difficulties, and reduced travel—all due to the Covid pandemic.

Donations for the FJs are from many Husky Sailing alumni and supporters. Some of the most generous donations came from the Jeff Wright family, HSF said.

The move will shift UW and other collegiate teams this fall into the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference, setting an uncertain course for the Husky team and making future support thought HSF and other donations sources more critical than even to the team’s Establishedsuccess.in2020, the HSF helps provide funding, leadership, and long-term vision needed to develop a diverse and highly competitive sailing team at UW. All donations accepted at HSF are used to support the Husky Sailing Team, including equipment expenditures, coaching staff, travel, and advanced planning.

At a June ceremony, the new sailing craft were all welcomed by about 70 attendees in a christening ceremony at the Sail Sand Point boatyard on Lake Washington. While christening each boat, donors shared inspiring stories of women sailors, strong mothers, deep friendships, and other amusing moments experienced on the sailing team. The plan for the fundraising came from insights shared from recent UW graduates, who had identified critical needs of the university’s club sports program, including coaching personnel and an urgent need for new sailboats.

“When finished next year, Lake Union Piers will be a vibrant, one-of-a-kind lakefront destination honoring Seattle’s rich maritime history,” said Schelleen Rathkopf, director of operations for Northwest Yacht Brokers Association. Current construction, however, will not disrupt the Boats Afloat Show, Rathkopf added. Food and bar service will be provided by the new Lakeside Restaurant (see page 32 for more details) and Waterways Cruises on its 90-foot Olympic Star vessel that’s anchored dockside. Call it part deux: After its successful, first-ever spring show this year in April, Boats Afloat will return with its beloved fall event this month. Scheduled for September 15-18, Boats Afloat will take place at Lake Union Piers on South Lake Union in Seattle. The largest floating boat show in the Pacific Northwest allows attendees to browse through scores of sailboats and powered yachts in the same location, many of which will be end-of-season models or previews of next year’s new selections. Boat sizes typically range from 15 to 100 feet in length. Boating enthusiasts can also see a series of new technology demonstrations, sample craft cocktails, dine on inspiring local cuisine, and dance to live music on the docks.

Moving aft and down into the companionway, two single-berth guest cabins can be accessed along with a port-side head with original sink and cabinetry. Farther aft is the main stateroom, with a full-sized berth, a private head, an eight-drawer dresser, and a TV. Stairs lead to the aft deck, where plenty of seating can be found on custom embroidered teak deck chairs. The foredeck also has two custom mahogany box seats for additional lounging opportunities.

Restoration work on the Riptide continues today. In 2021, it was fitted with 29 new ribs, 14 new planks, new splash rails, a renewed steering system. All deck and cabin surfaces have been covered with Dynel cloth, set in epoxy, and painted with LP paint. The doors have also been rebuilt and fitted with Art Deco etched glass in keeping with the vessel’s 1930s charm.

Built in 1939 by Elco Motor Yacht, the elegant craft was christened DO-HO as the flagship of the Elco fleet. First owned by restaurant chain creator Howard Johnson, the vessel was re-named the Alchade and then Southwind by other busi ness-mogul owners over the next decade, while it cruised on the Great Lakes and the Eastern seaboard. During the second world war, the Southwind briefly served with the U.S. Coast Guard on close-shore security duty. In 1950, it was purchased by infamous Las Vegas mobster Morris “Mo” Dalitz, who brought the Southwind to Lake Mead in Nevada to serve as a hospitality boat for his Desert Inn Resort. By 1954, the yacht was re located to Southern California, where it sailed for many years until 1983, when owner Vlad Worotko leased Southwind for use in the TV series “Riptide,” which ran for 56 episodes. By 1997, the aging Southwind was renamed Riptide in homage to its TV stardom, and its owners began a painstaking, 25-year restoration process to bring it to its current glory in Port Orchard, Washington. Originally powered by twin Hall-Scott 250hp engines, the Riptide has since been refitted with two Gray Marine/Detroit Diesel engines, which produce a combined 470hp, giving the Riptide a cruising speed of 11 knots, topping out at 16 knots.

The 83-year-old Riptide now has a thoroughly modern suite of navigation electronics, paired with its many Art Deco interior touches. New equipment in the fully enclosed wheelhouse includes a Garmin 740S Radar, GPS, Polaris VHF radio with RAM Mic, and Standard Horizon VHF with AIS. The helm, however, still retains echoes of its past, with original lever controls, a wooden ship’s wheel, and a 1940s-era helm chair.

The galley has also been updated to include a Dickinson Mediterranean three-burner propane stove with oven, a GE microwave, and an Alder Barbour refrigerator. The original icebox remains intact.

Launched in 1962, the pilot boat Arrow 2 spent 50 years on the Astoria waterfront ferrying pilots between the ships and the shore, day or night, rain or shine. For many years, this hard-working commercial boat and her crew performed their task almost unnoticed by the townspeople, but by 2000, together they had become a favorite sight for locals and visitors from all over the country.

It was 2016 before he was able to haul the boat out on the WWII-era seaplane ramp located at the Tongue Point shipyard at the east end of the city, hoping to have it back in good running order in a couple of years. After all, it was a steel workboat not a varnished wooden yacht, and he was not about to change the exterior appearance with its visible dents and welds acquired while coming alongside thousands of ships. A year later, the boat went back into the water and was driven to its new berth in Warrenton, six miles downriver.

Unfortunately, the boat’s age and traditional design caught up with it in 2012, when she was retired and disappeared for nearly a decade. Its many admirers were left to wonder what had become of it: Would the old boat become a back-up for the new boat or rust away on some backwater?

Many former crewmembers talked about restoring the old Arrow 2, but local resident Mark Schacher, who had worked on the river since he was 14 years old, was the one who finally made an offer and took on the responsibility of restoring this part of Astoria’s maritime heritage.

The succeeding years slipped by as Mark attempted to complete the overhaul of the engine room and upgrade the pilothouse to carry paying guests, never doubting that he could transform Arrow 2 into a charter tour vessel. By the time I sat down to interview him for this story, he had spent another five years dedicated to the restoration and return of Arrow 2 ORIGIN STORY But before I dive into that saga, let’s travel back in time to 1962—the year the Space Needle opened in Seattle and the Beatles released their first record. The then-new Arrow 2 replaced a wooden boat of the same name and went straight to work without any ceremony on a routine of trips to passing ships that were never more than a mile away. Now, this looked very easy to anyone watching from the shore because they could barely see what happened when the boat came alongside the ship right under its ladder. The boarding pilot then would quickly grab a hand rope and step or leap onto the nearest rung, while the ship proceeded at a speed of 10 knots to maintain steerage. This was the pilot’s daily challenge to reach their worksite and where the boat’s skipper earned their respect. For the few minutes they were on the Arrow 2, the pilots had no time or need for comfort. The seats in the small pilot house were a pair of hard wooden benches and there was no head. The pilots actually had little or no say in the layout of the boat because the pilot-transfer service in the river was—and still is—owned and operated by a tugboat company.

Like most traditional operators, he simply drew up a rough set of drawings and relied on Nichols to fill in the details. The result was a long lean hull with 50’ of waterline and a narrow 14’ beam. The aft deck was low, rising to a high bow protected by heavy rubber fendering.

Arrow Launch owner Jim Stacy had built up a fleet of five wooden craft all named Arrow plus a hull number from 1 to 5. Between 1940 and 1960 he replaced his four tugs at George Nichols boatyard in Hood River in the Columbia Gorge. By 1958, he had transferred their names and numbers to the new steel hulls, leaving the old Arrow 2, built in Astoria in 1907, as the last of his wooden boats. In 1960, its steel replacement was also under construction in Hood River, where the yard was busy building grain barges and big push tugs.

For many years, this had been Arrow Launch, which had been operating small tugs since the early 1900s.

Stacy wanted the new pilot launch to look and perform as well as the original Arrow 2 and with a lifetime of experience, he knew what he wanted.

Stacy employed two craftsmen to maintain and repair his small fleet— Ed Prebish, welder and mechanic, and Bill Maki, carpenter. They had insisted on full headroom in the engine room, so Stacy added a raised deck area amidships about 30” high to his drawings.

However, I doubt any of them would have bet on it still working 50 years later, let alone being admired and photographed by thousands of visitors. At that time, the

Nichols launched the bare hull into the dredged cove now called Nichols Boat Basin, and an Arrow tug towed it out into the mighty Columbia and downstream to the Bonneville Dam locks. From here, it was 140 miles to Astoria, where the crew moored the new boat at the 14th Street dock. The fitting out began with the installation of a new Cummins V-8 200hp diesel engine and a heavy-duty German Reintjes reduction gear, 4.5” driveshaft, and big 48” propeller. That was followed by the pilot house, which was fabricated in the Arrow workshop also on 14thTheStreet.visible feature of the house was the 15 wooden-framed windows that gave the pilot and helmsman a full view and permitted ventilation on warm days. All the deck fittings were oversize such as the sturdy tow post. The crews quickly learned to handle the new boat alongside ships of all types and were satisfied with the boat, which ran at an economical speed of 8 knots, but the shallow-V hull could easily reach 10 knots without much of a wake. (Ironically, Stacy only had a year to appreciate Arrow 2; in 1962, he sold the pilots’ contract, the dock, and the boat to the Knappton Towboat Co.)

RESTORATION WORK

52 annual total of ships calling on the Columbia was over 2,000, requiring more than 4,000 trips for the pilots per year. They came to load the wheat and other crops that arrived by rail from distant prairie states or by truck and barge from the inland empire. By the 1980s, the idea of shipping goods in containers was starting to take hold, and typical bulk cargo ships had reached “Panamax” size of 950’ by 106’—the limit of the Panama Canal locks. The annual calls dropped below 2,000, but since they could now carry up to 80,000 tons of cargo, the total tonnage increased, and the Columbia remained the biggest export outlet of wheat in the world. Alongside those giants, the Arrow 2 faithfully ran like clockwork every day, playing its part in the international trade.By2000, the Columbia Bar Pilots had improved their service with the first of two 70’ high-speed aluminum launches designed by Camarc of Scotland. They could cross the bar and cover the 12 miles to their boarding point on the Pacific in half an hour in good conditions. The bar pilots also introduced the option of flying out by helicopter when visi bility was good, which would have had the old-time captains turning in their graves! By then, I was driving to Astoria every year researching stories and was offered rides on both the old and new pilot boats for an article that appeared in NorthwestYachting Soon after, I found myself setting up my office in Astoria in a small low-rent apartment on 12th Street. The front door was just a few steps from the pilots’ dock, and in case you haven’t already guessed, I too became a member of the Arrow 2 fan club. For the next ten years, I checked to see if the boat was in sight every time I stepped out.

In 2008, during its annual overhaul, the Arrow 2 was repowered with its fourth engine, a Caterpillar C-18 putting out 700-horsepower. This was far more than it needed, but promised a long life. It also seemed to show that Foss Maritime, the fourth owner of the pilot contract, would keep the boat going for a few more years. As if to prove its value, the boat made the front page of the Daily Astorian the next year when a single-engine commuter plane crash-landed in the river close to the shore after the turbo-prop quit. Despite its total lack of modern electronics, the Arrow 2 was close enough to beat the Coast Guard high-speed boat to the rescue. The crew skillfully picked up the pilot Bill Henningsgaard, a former Microsoft executive and a well-known Seattle philanthropist, and his mother Edith, 84, a former mayor of Astoria, both standing on the submerged wing with water up to their knees. The wreckage of the plane was hoisted onto the dock a day later, and the Arrow 2 won more fans. But that didn’t count with Foss, which soon announced they would be replacing it with another modern Camarc pilot boat. When the last day for the Arrow 2 arrived, the Daily Astorian published a farewell story and announced that by their calculations it had made at least 250,000 round trips.

This achievement certainly left its mark, as Mark found after he removed the sponsons added to the bow. This improved its appearance, yet revealed the poor state of the original hull plate underneath! Next step was to remove the pilot house, revealing more corrosion on the aft deck. Sandblasting the rest of the hull removed many layers of paint and uncovered more corrosion around the stem. Then came the slow process of making patterns and shaping a new plate to be welded into the cutaways by Mark with the assistance of a friend and crewman on the new pilot boat, Drake Fischer. I stopped by occasionally, but kept out of the way until April of 2017 when I watched the Arrow 2 relaunching and took the first

53 photos of the 55-year-old boat back in her element. The new longer house looked good—and no longer displayed “PILOT” in large letters on the side. Mark planned to continue the overhaul to pass the Coast Guard survey to carry six passengers (the six-pack rule) but there were many problems to be resolved between old and new equipment. By the time 2020 arrived, the boat was finally emerging from its retirement and looked ready to go— until the pandemic struck. The only positive was more time for the skipper to finish his paperwork. He already had a 100-ton USCG license, but still needed the Oregon state marine guide license, insurance policy, website and flyers, so his tours didn’t really get going until 2022, when I saw him proceeding along the waterfront and realized it was time to catch up and hear the whole story. I found the boat in Warrenton, and was invited straight into the engine room where Mark had spent so much time. “When I bought it, I knew the boat really had no value—except for the motor, which was in very good shape with only 7,500 hours,” he explained. First came a full overhaul on the engine including machining the cylinder head and inspecting all bearings, pumps, etc. Many systems needed replacing including the cabin’s heater, pumps, switches and wiring, plus the plumbing and tank for the new bathroom at the aft end of the house. The result is a very clean space with everything clearly marked and accessible. In the pilot house, I was amazed at the transformation. Mark had insulated and paneled the walls and put up a large video screen to play a program on local history—and the bench seats finally had some padding. The 15 original window frames, each one a unique shape, had to be recreated in hardwood, plus two more for the extension, all cut to within a degree to fit properly. Reflecting on the time it took, he agreed it might well have been easier to build a copy rather than restore the original vessel to a seaworthy state—as is often the case. But, as we all know, it is the history of old boats that attracts fans and customers.

“The Arrow 2 is kind of a working museum now and I want all my passengers to share my affection for the boat and discover there is nothing like discovering the historic sites from the water,” he told me proudly. In the year he has been running tours, he has had some memorable customers including several groups from Europe who appreciated the historical aspects of the region.

“We have seen everything from whales, sea lions, and river otters to pilot transfers,” he recalls with satisfaction.

The Astoria waterfront is spread over two miles and includes several old canneries and warehouses that survived the great fire of 1922 and are now converted to breweries, restaurants and hotels. At the east end is Pier 39, famous as the home of the Bumble brand and now the site of a cannery museum, canvas shop, and many other attractions.

Hundreds of ships were mothballed here after the war, and it is now the site of a busy shipyard where tugs and fishing vessels are hauled out and serviced.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

For those tours, Arrow 2 now heads upriver from Warrenton, crossing the mouth of the Youngs River to Smith Point and the Port of Astoria docks before passing under the impressive 4-mile long Astoria-Megler bridge.

It did all lead me to the inevitable question: How much has this “labor of love” actually cost? Mark estimates that to hire professionals would have cost at least $500,000. That sounds like a lot for a restored steel workboat, I pointed out. He agreed, but reminded me that with the Arrow 2 now in first-class shape, it is able to work for its keep and begin paying him back. I think we can all agree that is only fair.

The Arrow 2’s journey continues around the cliffs of Tongue Point, out of the main channel, and back in time to a WWII Naval Air Station with a ramp and hangars to house PBY Catalina seaplanes.

For the fourth year in a row, Puget Sound coho returns are expected to exceed the half-million mark. If the coho returns wax expectations like several other salmon returns across Washington have done in 2022, an glers could see a dandy number of fish to catch. Fingers crossed! What we do know at this point is that the Puget Sound-wide hatchery coho forecast shows an 8% improvement and wild coho are up 9% compared to 2021 forecast. The recent 10-year average for hatchery coho is up 61% and the wild coho is up 29%. The combined 2022 Puget Sound hatchery and wild coho forecast is 666,468 compared to 614,948 in 2021; 504,604 in 2020; 708,521 in 2019; and 557,149 in 2018.

Earlier this summer, the resident coho fishing in central Puget Sound (Marine Catch Area 10) from mid-June into early-August was fair to good at times. These “stay at home” coho will also contribute to the early fall Puget Sound fisheries. The pilot run of coho should be generating action soon in the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Sekiu (Marine Area 5) and Port Angeles (Marine Area 6). Both areas are open daily through September 28 for hatchery-marked coho with a two-fish daily limit and the best areas to catch coho are usually in the Strait’s shipping channel. Keep tabs on schools of coho finning and jumping on the surface and baitfish schools on your fish finder. There is also a special Dungeness Bay coho fishery from October 1-31. A fishery that remained closed in 2021 and is often regarded as a good spot for coho is Marine Area 7 in the San Juan Islands, which is now open daily through September 30 with a daily limit of two hatchery coho. Anglers should check the WDFW website for any emergency changes to the season dates. The northeastern side of Whidbey Island (Marine Area 8-1) was also closed in 2021 but an improved return of coho, mainly to the Skagit River (101,651 are forecasted to return in 2022 compared to 80,451 in 2021), should produce some decent fishing. The southern portion along the east side of Whidbey Island (Marine Area 8-2) below the Mukilteo-Clinton boundary line is a popular location for coho and will be open daily through September 19 with a two-hatchery coho dailyGarneringlimit. the biggest spotlight for coho are northern Puget Sound (Marine Area 9), open for hatchery coho only daily now through September 25; and central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10), open for all coho daily now through October 31. Places to look for coho are Midchannel Bank off Port Townsend; Bush and Lagoon points off the west side of Whidbey Island; Marrowstone Island; Point No Point south to Pilot Point; Browns Bay; Possession Bar; Edmonds Marina to Richmond Beach; Kingston to Jefferson Head; Meadow Point to West Point near Shilshole Bay; Point Monroe; and Alki Point in West Seattle south to Redondo Beach. South central Puget Sound (Area 11) is also open for all coho through October 31; and southern Puget Sound (Area 13) is open year-round for hatchery-marked coho. On the south-central coast, head to Grays Harbor, which is known to be productive for large-sized coho with a good number of them weighing between 15- and 20-plus pounds. The Grays Harbor forecast calls for a whopping 198,719 coho in 2022 up from 76,518 in 2021. In Grays Harbor, salmon fishing is open daily through September 15 in the North Bay for hatchery coho only with a one-fish daily limit; and then from September 16 through October 31 it is open for all coho only in the East Bay with a two salmon daily limit. I’ll see you on the water very soon!

Summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean you need to throw in the towel on salmon fishing options in September. Right now, coho salmon— known to anglers as “silvers” for their shiny silvery flanks—are starting to stage in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and some have even started to poke their noses into Puget Sound. Coho aren’t large in stature and average 4 to 13 pounds, with some weighing 20-plus pounds. But despite not being the biggest in the salmon kingdom, when hooked they’re known to erratically zip around in all directions and will leap out of the water as they try to escape from being hooked.

Finally, the big and fast boats took off with the Disney family’s turbo-charged Volvo70 Pyewacket leading the way and chewing up the miles, with the rest of the big boat fleet entirely made up of Northwest teams at their heels. The big boats had the benefit of more breeze off the coast and made quick work reeling in the earlier starters. Then, as the wind began to shift further aft out in the Pacific, they really began to flex their muscles. As the wind stabilized for the rest of the fleets off the coast, the boats finally found themselves getting into the rhythm and began the famous trade wind sailing to Hawaii. Taylor Joosten, onboard the Northwest-based Aerodyne 43 Freja, made a “chef’s kiss” with his hand while remarking; “Everyone, who’s done a race like this, talks about the Champagne sailing, but you don’t really understand how great it is until you experience it for yourself. Days on days of surfing under a full spinnaker, in shorts and a T-shirt, heading pretty much dead-on to Hawaii.”

In addition to the big boat domination of the overall results, some amazing finishes were had within the earlier start classes as well, with Marc Andrea Klimaschewski and David Rodgers winning the Double Handed 1 on their Dogpatch 27 Moonshine, while Orcas Island locals Christina and Justin Wolfe finished second in the Double Handed 2 division on their J111 Raku. The rest of the scoreboard is covered in top finishes by Northwest boats, and it really goes to show that our little corner of the world makes for some seriously proficient sailors, especially in light and shifty conditions. It was certainly a race to remember, surely with a few parts that people would love to forget, but as with all things: If it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth it. I’ve got to give a huge congratulations to all the teams that took on the challenge.

To no one’s surprise, it was Pyewacket that crossed the line first, taking the class and overall win in the process and sailing the entire course in nearly exactly six days. Over the next few days, boats began to roll into the finish and after the times were corrected, we saw that it was an overwhelming win for the Pacific Northwest sailing community. Six boats out of the top ten call the Salish Sea home! Coming in at second place overall with his Santa Cruz 70 Westerly, Stuart Dahlgren summed it up well; “The Northwest went in force and CRUSHED.”

The small boats got underway with a festive send-off and were able to make their way out of the Golden Gate, but, unfortunately, as the fleet headed offshore the wind began to drop away. Thanks to a loosely formed pressure system in the Northern Pacific the first few days, many boats struggled to stay heading in the right direction and certainly put the navigators to the test. It was a game of “don’t lose focus” as all the racers tried day and night to keep moving and positioning themselves for the eventual wind forecasted to fill later in the race.

Pride of the Northwest

As with many long-distance races, the fleets had a staggered start with the smaller boats taking off on the 4th of July with starts every day or two until the largest and fastest boats began their race on July 8. This reverse start concept allows for the fleets to be spaced out by several days with the objective of the all the boats arriving within a few days of one another to party together in Hawaii.

As the subsequent fleets started, it became a bit of a pile-up off the coast as the faster boats sailed out and into the same variable conditions, but wind slowly began to materialize, and we quickly began to see who had made the right calls early on to prepare for the developing wind.

Billed as the fun race to Hawaii, the Pacific Cup marks its territory as a race that takes all comers on all boats of all shapes and sizes. The race starts just inside the Golden Gate Bridge in the iconic San Francisco Bay and has a fairly simple racecourse that ends in Kaneohe on the island of Oahu. With the north to south direction of the race, and the prevailing trade winds, it provides textbook open ocean downwind sailing, the kind of which racers the world over dream about. Clocking in at 2,070 miles, it is one of the longest yacht races on the planet and having run every other year for over 40 years, a solid bucket list item. After the cancellation of the 2020 edition, this year’s race was set up to be something special as the pent-up demand for ocean racing was off the charts, and the competition did not disappoint. Apparently up here in the Northwest, a fair number of people had been daydreaming of sailing to Hawaii and it showed in the entry list. Of the 61 boats that took part in the race, eighteen of the entries hailed from the Pacific Northwest, a mixture of Canada-, Puget Sound- and Oregon-based boats spread throughout the various fleets from top to bottom.

Grand Palace Makes 1 Freeze-driedcocktailpassion fruit powder

1½ ounces premium vodka

Inspired by the 1860s-era Daisy cocktail crafted with spirits, orange, and sour, this glamorous sipper hails from the Bamboo Bar in Bangkok, Thailand. The iconic bar opened in 1940 and is situated inside the elegant and historic Mandarin Oriental Hotel. If you’ve never been there, the landmark property is perched on the edge of the scenic Chao Phraya River that flows through the heart of Bangkok and offers convenient boat transportation and sightseeing cruises since many of the major city attractions are easily accessible from various points along this waterway. Strolling through the beloved hotel and into the seductive bar evokes a feeling of stepping back in time, as many famous writers have enjoyed a drink at this jazzy sanctuary, including Ernest Hemingway and Graham Greene. Today, the Bamboo Bar and their inspirational mixology team are best known for their exotic cocktails and use of offbeat and fascinating ingredients, like passion fruit powder. The deliciously invigorating sweet and sour flavor from the passion fruit is the secret to this marvelous cocktail—one that truly captures the essence of Thailand, but is still accessible to the Northwest as the powder is readily available to order online. This stunner, fit for a sunny September evening, is featured in my forthcoming book: A Bartender’s Guide to the World: Cocktails and Stories from 75 Places (Appetite-Random House Publishing), which I had the pleasure of assembling with notable bartender Lauren Mote.

1 ounce fresh lemon juice

1 ounce Vanilla Syrup, recipe follows 2 dashes chocolate bitters 1 egg Garnish:white*4drops aromatic bitters Dust the outside of a frozen coupe glass with the passion fruit powder and set aside. In a cocktail shaker, add the vodka, coconut liqueur, lemon juice, Vanilla Syrup, chocolate bitters, and egg white. Dry shake (without ice) for about 5 seconds to emulsify the ingredients. Add some ice and shake again for about 5 seconds. Using a small fine-mesh bar sieve to catch the loose ice chips, double strain into the prepared glass. For the garnish, add the aromatic bitters drops on top in a decorative pattern. Then, using a toothpick, drag each drop to the center, and serve.

*Note: If you are concerned about food safety of raw eggs, use 1-ounce pasteurized liquid egg whites in place of the egg white.

Makes about 2 cups ¾ cup (about 7 ounces), filtered water 1¼ cups granulated sugar ½ vanilla bean Boil the filtered water and set aside. In a separate bowl, add the sugar and then whisk in the hot water until the sugar is dissolved. Split half of a vanilla bean and scrape out the seeds. Add the vanilla seeds to a heatproof, food-safe bag and top with the sugar water. Remove the air from the bag, seal, and clip it to the side of a pot, ensuring the mixture is underwater. Simmer on low heat for 1½ hours. Transfer the bag to an ice bath. When cool, strain the liquid into a sanitized bottle, label with the date, and store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
