This is a very special issue of Property Style for the team at New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty.

We are honoured to have been invited into the home of legendary Kiwi actor, vintner, author and charismatic gentleman, Sir Sam Neill. Sam’s Central Otago estate is a place very close to his heart, a sanctuary where he finds solace outside of the bright lights of Hollywood (page 6).

The self-sufficient property is just as productive as the man himself. The Redbank Farm & Vineyard generates everything from lavender oil to honey and saffron and, of course, an excellent pinot noir.

We also catch up with the NZ baker and entrepreneur who has developed a cult following around the world. Jordan Rondel – aka The Caker – is successfully juggling her multinational business from her two bases in Auckland and Los Angeles, and catering to the very different tastes of the NZ and American markets. Her story is on page 22.

With an illustrious Hollywood career now spanning five decades, you could be forgiven for thinking Sir Sam Neill might be looking to slow down a little. But as he roams around his multifaceted property in Central Otago, feeding the animals and surveying the grapevines with abundant energy and a charming, youthful spark, it’s clear that retirement is nowhere in sight.

Sam is a man with a lot on the go; while acting, agriculture and wine are lifelong passions, he has recently added ‘author’ to his talent repertoire with the release of his new memoir Did I Ever Tell You This?

Much of the book was written while Sam was undergoing cancer treatment in Sydney last year – after being diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, he is now, thankfully, in remission. Other parts of the book were written at the Central Otago farm where he enjoys living off the land. Extending his genetic love of wine, he planted four vineyards in the region in the ‘90s and ‘00s, then set an ambitious goal to produce the world’s finest pinot noir through organic wine brand Two Paddocks.

Today, Sam spends his days on the farm making lavender oil, tending to the animals, entertaining grandchildren and catching up with his team over a glass of that awardwinning pinot.

Where do you live?

The Redbank Farm & Vineyard in Central Otago. This is my base and I love being here – it’s my happy place. We’ve got a bit of everything – sheep and dogs, chickens and ducks. We grow fruit, vegetables and lavender, and produce honey.

Every year the place gets more and more beautiful, and all the effort we have put into sustainability and enriching the soils has become more evident.

Our vineyard manager Mike has a house closer to the front gate, designed by Max Wilde, and we have staff quarters out the back. We have the Clubhouse and Two Paddocks HQ. It’s always a hive of activity – lively, sociable and productive. I’m quietly proud about what we’ve done with the property.

When did you acquire the property? Was it always your intention to produce awardwinning wine?

When I bought the place in 1999 there was nothing here, just a little office. I built the Clubhouse and the house, which was designed by Richard Naish. The property was originally a Government research horticulture farm and we still cultivate some of the remnants from that.

I planted my first vineyard in Gibbston then grew more ambitious – now we have four vineyards. My love affair with wine started about 1980: my great grandfather landed in NZ in 1861 and set up the family business Neill & Company Wines and Spirits, so I guess you could say an interest in alcohol is in the gene pool. For me, wine is part of a full life – wine, friends, conversation and sociability. Good wine and good friends are some of the greatest pleasures in life.

Why do you choose to live in Central Otago?

I’m from Dunedin so I’m hardwired to see Central Otago as nirvana. It’s where we always came for holidays – where I learnt to fish, where I camped with my family. Then one day I realised I could actually live here and I’ve never looked back.

What’s your favourite feature of the property?

There’s so much about this place that I love – the vines, the vegie garden, the orchards. But the thing that’s given me the most satisfaction is all the native trees and shrubs we have planted because they have brought back all the native birds.

We’ve seen a big return to native birdlife and now you can hear the sounds of bellbirds and tuis. I’ve got a thing about native birds –especially the bossy old tui.

Conservation is important to you – how are you working with the New Zealand Nature Fund?

We assist in protecting the conservation in NZ national parks like Fiordland, but also other projects such as the conservation of the Antipodean albatross, which is under severe threat from tuna fishing.

The adults lay their eggs, raise their chick and one day it doesn’t come back because it’s caught on a long line. It’s a species that’s in considerable danger. I grew up just down the road from Taiaroa Head, where they have a wonderful albatross hatchery, so I’m very fond of the albatross.

What is coming up for Two Paddocks in 2023?

This year is our 30th anniversary from when I planted my first vines, so it’s a milestone. A lot has changed since then. All of the wine is organic and we have three levels of wine; the Picnic which is our everyday wine, the Two Paddocks Estate which is the once-aweek wine, and the single vineyards like The Fusilier or The Last Chance which are for special occasions. But you can have as many special occasions as you like.

Was it a conscious decision to go organic?

Yes. It became more apparent to me, without sounding pretentious, that the future of the planet depends on our stewardship. Putting toxic chemicals over things was out of the question. I didn’t want them on the people that work with me and I didn’t want them near my wine.

It’s a long and laborious process to convert but for my peace of mind, it’s been one of the best things I could have done.

How do you live sustainably on the farm?

I grow fruit and vegetables, and we produce lavender and lavender oil which gets made into soap. We have a very extensive compost programme and all the waste from the winery goes back into the farm, and so on. Most of the work is below the surface of what you see – if you’ve got healthy soils full of life, you’ll produce a lively wine.

Describe your perfect Sunday at home in Central Otago:

It’s very quiet here on a Sunday. I live next door to the tractor shed which is always very busy with people coming and going from 7am. But on a Sunday, I get to sleep in.

I enjoy the quiet, but I do like Mondays when the property is lively again. There’s always something to get involved in and I’ve usually got a grandson or two working for me in the school holidays.

Did you write your memoir here?

I wrote some of the book here, and some in Sydney. I didn’t really mean to write a book but once I started I thought, ‘Well, let’s tell a few stories while I’m here’. It just got away on me – a bit like the wine, I suppose. It’s not a definitive biography but stories from my life.

How do you balance running a farm and wine business with your film career?

It’s because of the wonderful people I work with, either in the film world or here. I’ve written a chapter about the wonderful women I’ve worked with over the years, and all these great people that work with me in the vineyards. It’s them I owe a debt of gratitude to – many of them have been here for decades.

Do you have a favourite taonga or sentimental piece on the property?

The Weather Feather sculpture (page 9). I’m not a big sculpture man but about 15 years ago I commissioned Neil Dawson who is a wonderful sculptor and an old friend from university days. It’s beautiful and tells you which way the wind is coming from.

What’s next for Sam Neill?

When people talk about retirement, I just go blank – I can’t visualise it. If your life is rewarding and fun, why would you want to leave that life?

I don’t play golf. I love going to work and I love getting up in the morning and getting around the farm. One of the secrets of life is that if you find something you enjoy, it won’t feel like work. ◇

“It’s not always about improving the décor –lighting affects us emotionally,” he says. “One of the things I love most are the many comments from people saying, ‘Your lights make me so happy’. This is very important to me. I don’t believe in fashion, which is just a commercial construct aimed at making us buy more stuff. I want people to be attached to the things they have and keep them longer, so they don’t indulge in the wasteful ‘churn’.”

David himself is committed to shunning the wasteful churn and has become a global leader in environmentally responsible design.

Hawke’s Bay-based lighting designer David Trubridge celebrates 20 years in trailblazing design.

Some of life’s pivotal moments can happen by accident – just ask world-renowned lighting designer David Trubridge.

Although he’d been designing and making furniture since the 1970s, it wasn’t until a winter’s day in 2003 that David stumbled across his next career move. Now known as the Coral light (pictured left), the sculpture started out as a playful experiment in form and structure, piqued by David’s interest in geometrical figures.

“It was my wife Linda who suggested I put a lightbulb inside it, mainly because she saw more ceiling space in our house than floor space, which was already full of my furniture,” he recalls.

“I soon discovered that lighting offered me far more creative potential than furniture because the form is much less prescribed. You can make whatever you like and there are few practical restraints.”

The iconic Coral design turns 20 this year, and over the past two decades has won numerous global design awards. It remains David’s most popular design today.

David Trubridge pendant lights are made from plywood, bamboo or birch. These easily replenished materials can not only infuse nature into a home, but can evoke feelings of happiness, too.

“I have always staunchly maintained that we are not sustainable. Nothing that is manufactured in today’s world is,” he says. “The question is not about being sustainable, it is about the extent of your harmful effects on people and the environment. We try to continually improve what we do, but we also make a point of telling our whole story – the achievements we are proud of, and the aspects that need improving. This is an attempt to counter the greenwashing, the disingenuousness and downright lies that are rife in the world today. I think many people know this and hopefully respect our honesty.”

David tries to minimise the company’s footprint by shipping the lights as smaller kitsets (as opposed to large, fully assembled lights), removing oil-based plastics from the operation, and pledging to not embark on long-haul flights for business purposes. He is also mindful of the impacts of business growth. With a team of 18, David aims to keep the operation small and smart.

“I believe that growth is a dangerous obsession,” he says. “We can’t keep on growing, knowing how much damage we are doing to the environment. I have clearly stated that growth is not a requirement for our business. If we happen to find ourselves selling more lights that is okay, especially if our products are being bought instead of more harmful ones. I would prefer to stay the way we are, the way we have been for the past 10 years.”

As for this year, his lighting designs will be exhibited in Milan, where his European distributors will launch two new David Trubridge designs. An outdoor version of Coral will also be introduced – perfectly timed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that pivotal moment. ◇

Beyond the bach

Light, natural rattan can add sculptural interest to any home - even in the cooler months.

There’s a reason why rattan immediately evokes an exotic, faraway feel. It comes from more than 600 different species of climbing vines native to tropical regions around the world including Indonesia, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and China.

But while rattan furnishings have often been reserved for holiday homes and patio areas, more people are now realising the textural beauty of the material and are not limiting it to beach life or the outdoors. Like many new trends, the rattan resurgence can be partly credited to the pandemic – after spending so much time staring at the walls in lockdowns, homeowners are now gravitating towards natural materials to emulate nature and a sense of calm.

Celerie Kemble of Kemble Interiors says rattan is easily adaptable and can be incorporated within most interior styles, from traditional to contemporary.

“Rattan is a light-hearted, natural material that often adds sculptural interest because it’s crafted to easily bend and curve and can be woven into a wide variety of shapes and patterns,” she says.

But perhaps one of rattan’s most endearing features is that it’s 100% sustainable. The rattan vine can grow at a rate of two centimetres per day, meaning it’s ready to harvest in just two to three years. It’s also surprisingly durable – you can expect a rattan furniture piece to last well over a decade.

Consider the contrast

The beauty of rattan lies in its versatility. It can be mixed with other materials and iterated in surprising ways. Kemble recently designed a coffee table using clear acrylic and rattan.

“The contrast of the natural material with the visibility of the more technical material is just stunning,” Kemble says.

Because rattan is so light, it makes for great accent and accessory pieces such as bar carts, stackable chairs, side tables and floor lamps. But it’s just as effective in lighting applications, picture frames and shelving – particularly when up against a contrasting printed wallpaper.

Mix and match

Rattan is the type of material that can be melded into any space, with an eye toward balance. A rattan sideboard can be used to soften a dining room that has more traditional or formal pieces, for example.

“A simple, traditional item mixed with a more elaborate, sculptural rattan piece can bring the perfect synergy into a room,” says Kemble.

She suggests incorporating a rattan coffee table into a formal living space.

“It makes the dressy, formal furniture and rug feel younger and the room more relaxed.”

Another way to balance rattan is through textiles – introducing opposing textures like silk or velvet can break up the look. For example, try pairing a velvet sofa and a couple of rattan chairs with velvet accent cushions.

Be strategic

Most interior experts recommend using restraint for year-round seasonality and liveability – rattan overload can look dated. Instead, stick to key statement pieces in your space to lead the eye throughout the room. Consider incorporating two or three items –such as chairs or pendant light fixtures – as the focal point or showcase just one large rattan piece (a cabinet, dining table or sofa) and add complementary woven accessories around the room. ◇

Sweet success

Jordan Rondel’s luxe cakes have developed a cult following in NZ and the US.

Auckland and Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Jordan Rondel is a woman small in size but big on ingenuity.

If you’re yet to pick up one of the delicacies from her charming K-Road cakery, you may have seen her vibrant, sensory-loaded marketing campaigns. But don’t mistake her for a young Betty Crocker: this savvy businesswoman is the epitome of contemporary and douses everything she does in equal parts sugar and spice.

Born and bred in Auckland, Jordan spent school holidays in Paris with her French grandparents, immersed in the renowned French food philosophy of “enjoy everything –in moderation”. It inspired her love of baking and haute couture cakes, and the kitchen soon became her favourite place. Experimenting with unexpected flavour combinations was her forté, then she expanded her repertoire to include gluten-free and vegan cakes.

“As I grew up, I discovered that I loved the magical science of baking but also loved pushing the boundaries and bending the rules, so I taught myself how to create my own recipes,” she says. “When I founded The Caker in 2010, requests for vegan and gluten-free cakes were few and far between, but a few years in I found myself having to develop a whole vegan menu and make gluten-free options for everything. I actually loved this challenge and today some of my vegan cakes are even more popular than their non-vegan counterparts.”

Jordan runs The Caker from her two homes in Los Angeles and Auckland. Ready-to-eat cakes are sold through her Auckland flagship store, while in LA the focus is on DIY cake-baking kits and producing bespoke cakes for her clients (including Hollywood’s elite). Online, her cake kits and cookbooks are bought by customers from Wellington to Washington.

Straddling the two countries has been a learning experience for Jordan. She’s had to adapt to the very different consumer markets (Kiwis are much more adventurous when it comes to cakes) and the continuously evolving spectrum of dietary requirements.

“When I first moved to the USA to expand The Caker, I learnt that Americans have slightly less imaginative tastebuds than my NZ customers, so I’ve had to educate people about interesting flavour combinations and ingredients,” she says.

As for why she chose to expand to the US, Jordan says it seemed like a natural progression for The Caker. There was a gap in the market for the type of wholesome, luxe cakes Jordan is well known for. With flavours such as Coconut Raspberry Lime Leaf and Spiced Carrot with Salted Caramel, she opts for only high-quality ingredients and keeps the refined rubbish to a minimum.

Of course, there’s no point developing a premium product without clever marketing. The Caker is all about stunning, aspirational imagery (it helps that Jordan is a former model) and the occasional collab with other brands. Some of The Caker’s past partners include Karen Walker, Nespresso and Champagne Collet.

“Every time we do a collab it unfolds a little differently. Some brands approach us or we approach them because we think what they are doing is really cool and in alignment with our brand,” she says. “I love doing collabs because it pushes us to create something new and amazing and it opens up a new audience for both of us.”

The collaboration mantra extends to her internal team as well. With staff in Auckland and LA, communication is essential to keep pushing those boundaries which, this year, may even include a sidestep into the beauty space.

“Our culture centres around working together –I learn off my team every day. There is no hierarchy,” she says. “Our modus operandi is simply to spread the joy that cake brings.” ◇

Where’s home for you?

We lost our home in the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 and arrived in Cambridge a few days later. A friend encouraged us to have a holiday at her house and assess our options moving forward. The community rallied around my family and I at that very traumatic time and gave us clothes, food, shelter and lots of hugs. Needless to say, we stayed and have never looked back.

What’s your favourite local restaurant or café?

I love Alpino with its upmarket décor, friendly service and great wine selection – the pizzas and oysters are amazing.

What’s the best location for a scenic walk or run?

The Maungakawa Hill Scenic Reserve Loop (also known as Sanatorium Hill) is a beautiful, easy walk for all ages in the heart of lush, native bush. The Maungatautari bird reserve (Sanctuary Mountain) is another stunning location for an easy walk or more challenging hike through ancient forests, wetlands and the native bird reserve.

What’s your favourite local event?

The Cambridge Autumn Festival is a vibrant celebration of the arts with live music, shows, dance, exhibitions, and free family events. We also have

Like many parts of the country, we’ve seen a slight cooling of the Cambridge market. Inflation, rising interest rates and not getting a refund on what was meant to be a good Kiwi ‘summer’ here in the North Island have all contributed to the temporary dip.

Cambridge is a beautiful place to live and while residential market activity is very much in line with the rest of the Waikato region, sales prices here sit well above the median regional price of $774,500.

There are hot buyers in town – many of them are wellheeled and ready for a change.
