A new year is always a great time to set new goals. Where do you live?

We live in west Auckland – our home is in a great location that isn’t too far away from the CBD yet feels like a million miles away in amongst the native bush.

Who do you live with?

My fiancé Heidi.

How long have you lived in your home and what initially attracted you to it? We’ve been here for about two-and-a-half years now. We absolutely fell in love with the place the moment we saw it. In fact, Heidi burst into tears. It was the setting in the native bush and the harbour views – it felt completely relaxing the moment we stepped into it. We both have pretty busy lives so to feel like we’ve escaped that to our own little sanctuary every night is really important to us.

What is it about your home that makes you feel at ease?

For me, it’s the natural environment. It’s very peaceful out here and our mid-century house is surrounded by native bush, with some great walking tracks nearby. We’re just a fiveminute walk to the local beach, which is ideal in summer.

Describe your perfect Sunday at home: A bush trail run to start the day then home for breakfast and coffee. Depending on the tide, Heidi and I might go for a swim down at the beach or do a bit of veggie gardening.

I love cooking and on Sundays I enjoy nothing more than pottering around in the kitchen and preparing a late lunch or early dinner while listening to some vinyl. Heidi works in the music industry so there’s always something new to check out. Of course, 6pm is always news time, followed by a movie and homemade popcorn.

What is your favourite room of the house and why?

The lounge. It has a beautiful, spacious feel to it with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to some pretty spectacular views of the native bush and Auckland Harbour.

Tell us about your interior design style – do you lean towards a particular aesthetic?

As the house is mid-century, we’ve gone for that era of style and interior design. We’ve mixed some vintage pieces, like our Scandinavian oak sideboard, with new furniture – we love our chocolate leather lounger. The overall look is still a work in progress and ideally, I’d love more art. But hey – we’ve got the rest of our lives, right?

What is your favourite taonga or sentimental piece in your home and what is special about it?

Our taonga is not so much inside the house but right next to it. We have two 100-year-old kauri trees nestled beside the house. We call them Tahi and Rua. I once heard kauri described as ‘the whales of the land’ and they are the most mesmerising things to watch, particularly on a wet day when rain is running down them.

When it comes to homewares and furniture, do you prefer luxury, new pieces or vintage finds?

We’re very much about mixing it up, for instance our dining table is an antique from the Northland Primary School library and the chairs we’ve matched with it are modern, white outdoor chairs. I think this eclectic combination creates a lovely bach feel to the home, so it’s instantly calming and relaxing when you walk in the door. ◇

Multi-award-winning designer Natalie Du Bois shares her recipe for success.

Natalie Du Bois knows her way around a kitchen.

Not only has she been a trainee chef, the Auckland-based interior designer is hot property in contemporary kitchen design, having recently won Designer of the Year at the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association Excellence in Design Awards. It’s an incredible achievement that tops off an outstanding year for the designer who specialises in creative kitchens and bathrooms, breathing life into spaces that don’t always get the aesthetic attention they deserve.

Natalie recognises the importance of these spaces, and how people like to live within them. This is particularly true when it comes to a kitchen, a place where families meet in the mornings, kids do their homework, and friends mingle in the evenings.

“I love designing kitchens as they are the biggest asset to any home. It’s the place where people always gravitate to when they visit,” she says. “I have designed kitchens for more than 25 years and love how every year there are new technologies and improvements with materials. It keeps me on my toes and never gets boring.”

Her disdain for the mundane is evident in any Natalie Du Bois-designed kitchen. Each is vastly different and moulded to the characteristics of a home and its inhabitants. She doesn’t favour a particular design style – inside her project portfolio you’ll find everything from traditional Cape Codstyle kitchens to the ultra-luxurious and contemporary.

“I’m a bit of a chameleon when it comes to design,” she confesses. “I find beauty in all styles and genres. It purely depends on the home I am working with, my clients’ personalities and what I feel would work well for them. It’s ingrained in me to ensure my clients get a one-off design tailored to them. I consider my work as creating a bespoke piece of functional art.”

An international understanding also helps when it comes to conjuring something out of the box for NZ kitchens and bathrooms. Natalie’s residential design experience in South Africa and the United Kingdom has encouraged her to flex her creative muscle.

“People are now being influenced by global trends on social media, so they don’t mind being risky,” she says. “The key is to emulate the design you’ve seen in a tasteful way. I’m a believer in creating spaces that have longevity – not only to bring many more years of enjoyment but to be more environmentally responsible, too.”

Material selection plays a pivotal part in that responsibility, and Natalie prefers materials such as timber, stone and metals.

“I will always be a lover of natural, real materials that have a timeless quality. I love natural timber floors, stone countertops and raw metal accents in tapware and accessories.” ◇

What’s new for 2023?

“We are seeing more people opt for earthy and ‘dirtier’ tones in their kitchens. It’s a firm ‘no’ to bold, primary colours, and instead leaning into more calming hues with a touch of warmth.”

What are your tips for selecting the right benchtop?

“It’s a balancing act with the other materials used. If the cabinetry is detailed, the benchtop should be more subtle. If other elements are more minimalist, it can be great to add a bit of drama with an interesting, patterned benchtop.”

What’s a trick to improve a kitchen with little investment?

“Changing handles is one of the easiest ways to modernise a kitchen. Then, consider refinishing or repainting the cabinetry.”

The fast lane

Motorsport CEO Josie Spillane has the keys to success.

Motorsport industry boss Josie Spillane isn’t precious when it comes to criticism. In fact, one of her most memorable knock-backs came from high-profile Australian entrepreneur Tony Quinn: “You are a disappointment and I think I have made a big mistake”.

Those were the exact words delivered from Tony to Josie, just six weeks after he’d hired her as a business development manager for his newly opened Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell. It was a blow. Not only was she fresh in a job that she loved but a man she truly respected was telling her, in no uncertain terms, that she needed to up her game.

That’s when Josie uncovered one of the most important lessons in leadership: be brave enough to take on board honest – sometimes brutal –feedback and use it to your advantage.

And that, she did. That meeting was nearly 10 years ago now, and since then Josie has been promoted to chief executive officer of Tony’s New Zealand stable of tourism and motorsport businesses, including Highlands, the Taupo International Motorsport Park, Hampton Downs Motorsport Park in the Waikato, and the Game Over go-karting facilities in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown.

To top it off, she recently won the coveted Excellence in Leadership award at the Business South Awards in Dunedin. It was a successful evening, with Highlands being nominated as a finalist, too.

“I have the privilege of leading some amazing teams to deliver exceptional experiences, whether it be through our membership, tourism operations and the motorsport arms of the businesses,” she says. “Fundamentally, we strive to provide experiences of joy. Whenever someone visits one of our facilities, it’s to have a good time. And we work really hard to deliver that.”

Although Josie admits she initially “knew nothing about motorsport and no one would want her to be a driver in their race team,” her business acumen and customer service savvy has cemented her position as a respected leader in the industry. She also has a strong social conscience, having previously worked as a business development director for Cure Kids.

“There’s an underlying value of using our powers for good,” she says. “We are about creating a legacy for the communities we operate in, and for the tourism and motorsport industries.”

As well as supporting numerous local events, Highlands is funding the placement of a social worker in local schools for the next five years. They also provide a mental health programme, bringing in consultants to teach children from Year 6 onwards how to nurture their mental health.

“This has been a crucial initiative for Tony,” says Josie. “Highlands was our first track – it was his vision and he built it. But the community support from the beginning has been phenomenal and it’s important for him and his legacy to give something meaningful back.

“We really hope it will be a catalyst for other companies to follow suit. Many companies before us had good social responsibility and we hope we can inspire other businesses too. If everyone does a little something, then that becomes a big something special, particularly in smaller communities.”

As for her own leadership style, Josie delves deep into understanding what makes people tick, then gives them the space to execute their roles to the best of their ability – a high-trust approach that predominantly generates great results.

“I have succeeded and done well in my career by having people believe in me – it’s been the most powerful confidence builder to know that people back me, even when I’m not entirely sure myself,” she says. “This has enabled me to push harder and that’s very much what I try and put to our teams.

“It’s also about what’s best for the business and how we can achieve that by playing to our individual strengths. We don’t put square pegs in round holes. Instead, we find the hole that best fits their shape.” ◇

What’s your favourite local restaurant or café?

I’m a real foodie and it’s tough to choose just one as we’re spoilt for choice here. Kika and Bistro Gentil are fantastic for upmarket dining on a date night (the mushroom and truffle gnocchi at Kika is a must!). But if we’re with friends, family or a larger group for dinner the fun and relaxed atmosphere at Amigos is perfect.

What’s the best location for a scenic walk or run?

Where’s home for you?

I feel lucky to have called Wānaka home for six years now. After some time spent in Australia, Hubby and I always knew Wānaka would be where we returned to settle. You just can’t beat the year-round lifestyle here, with the lake, walking and biking tracks in the summer and ski resorts in the winter – not to mention the numerous nearby wineries.

The Outlet Track. It’s right on my doorstep and follows the river along to the lake. The ever-changing colours of the poplar trees with a backdrop of snowcapped mountains makes for a very scenic walk yearround. If you’re after something a bit more strenuous, with views over Lake Wānaka and the township through to Lake Hawea and beyond, then Mount Iron is another regular among the locals.

In the digital age – where many people have the ability to choose where they work and live – Wānaka is high up on the wish-list.

Like most places in New Zealand – and indeed the world – the property market is continuously changing as we begin to emerge from the pandemic. However, we are seeing a trend that somewhat insulates sought-after ‘lifestyle’ hotspots.

Wānaka is no exception to this – it’s a highly desirable destination not just for holiday home owners and retirees, but for young professionals and families. The town is still experiencing high interest from Kiwis living in urban areas, as well as expats. Australians are also very fond of Wānaka – particularly Sydney-siders and Queenslanders – and snap up properties as their parttime homes.

As we enter 2023, we are seeing more stock in the $1-$2 million range so there is now more choice for buyers, whereas stock levels were low in 2021 and parts of 2022. That being said, anything realistically priced in a great location is still likely to receive multiple offers.

At the top end of the Wānaka market, high-net-worth individuals are specifically seeking lakefront properties or new builds with land. What is pleasing is that NZSIR has a significant share of properties sold in the $2 millionplus range, right up to $20 million.

Equally as pleasing is the fact that locals continue to reinvest in the region – this shows tremendous confidence in the market and the town. There is a large amount of activity and development happening

What’s your favourite local event?

The annual New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon is an event I was proud to be part of last year, and it’s only a short trip across the hill from Wānaka. Beerfest and the Ripe Wine & Food Festival are always a fun afternoon out. NZSIR is the Bronze Sponsor of another unmissable event, the Wānaka Festival of Colour 2023, which is a fantastic arts festival.

What’s the best part about living in Wānaka?

My family and I have lived in many places around the world but we are very settled in Wānaka – there is something to be said in that. Few places compare when it comes to the outdoor lifestyle and friendly community that Wānaka offers. Having access to the lake, worldclass ski fields and a vibrant township all on the doorstep of Mount Aspiring National Park is pretty spectacular. ◇

SALMON

Half a side of salmon, roughly 1.2 kg

200g salt

500g sugar

Zest of 2 lemons

20g dill

6 bay leaves

Place salmon into a dish and cover with salt, sugar, lemon zest, dill and bay leaves. Leave for three days in the fridge.

Combine ingredients for the marinade on day two and keep refrigerated.

For the almond crackers, mix all ingredients together. Place between two sheets of greaseproof paper and roll out with a rolling pin.

MARINADE

1 grapefruit

Olive oil

1 red onion, pickled

Shave of fennel

Salt and pepper

ALMOND CRACKERS

2 cups almond meal

2 tbsp water

2 tbsp olive oil

1 egg white

1 tsp ground fennel

½ tsp salt

Bake at 150°C for 20 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven and let cool, then break into fragments.

When ready to serve, thinly slice salmon with a filleting knife and arrange onto plates. Serve with grapefruit marinade, almond crackers and true leaf radish microgreens.
