I

n this issue it really brought me back to our older issue with Nigel Barker on our cover. It was back when we did a all men’s issue, back when we actually had themes. This issue isn’t all men mind you but it did have a lot more men’s editorials than usual which was a nice change for Obscurae. We truly love to mix it up and have both genders in our issues. Obscurae Magazine has always been about appreciating the differences when it comes to editorials, fashion, models, designers, and photographers. We had a lot of amazing sets this month that were unique but all in all truly amazing. I really loved this issue. I was proud of our artists and to see all they have accomplished with just a eye and a great team. You guys and gals have really out done yourselves this issue and I am honored to be able to publish each and every one of you. What would Obscurae be without everyone who has submitted, but a empty shell needed to be filled with love, support, and true talent. Again I am a happy editor and a stunned and amazed editor. I truly love this issue and I hope you all can enjoy it as well. I also want to add that we have made a huge milestone this month with Obscurae by having Reese Witherspoon in our pages, and getting a chance to promote her gorgeous store; Draper James. You will love Draper James, it has amazing clothing, accessories, house decor, and so much more. This store wouldn’t be the same without the comforts of southern hospitatility that Obscurae Magazine can understand. Because Tennessee is a heartbeat of passion, warmth, and acceptance.

Love, Aelise Beattie Davis

I

started this company to honor my Southern heritage and in particular my grandparents who were, and still are, the greatest influences in my life: my grandmother, Dorothea Draper and my grandfather, William James Witherspoon. My grandparents taught me everything I know about gracious Southern living. From them I learned to dress and act like a lady, to take pride in my home, to reach out to help a neighbor, and to always invite everyone in for a visit.

Speaking of my grandfather, my Grandpa James could charm anyone. He taught me that good manners and great style go hand in hand.

“We hope you will stop in to see us often—our door is always open.”

My grandmother Dorothea only drove white Cadillacs—always while wearing proper driving gloves. She didn’t have a lot of dresses, but she had an incredible sense of style and knew how to make the most of any outfit by wearing the perfect accessories. Her shoes always matched her purse and she never removed her pearls or her wedding ring. Dorothea was also a wonderful hostess who always made more food than was necessary and sent people home with fresh homemade biscuits and vegetables from my grandfather’s garden.

When I returned to Nashville with my own family, I wanted to recapture and celebrate all that I love and remember about my grandparents and the South. That is why I created Draper James.

Whether it’s Nashville or New Orleans, Beaufort or Birmingham, there is a special breed of charm and grace that’s signature to the American South. We’re proud to say that over 50% of our products are made in the United States, and we’re always looking to produce more in America and in particular the South. With Draper James, our goal is to bring contemporary, yet timeless Southern style to your wardrobe and your home, no matter where you live. We hope you will stop in to see us often—our door is always open. - Reese Witherspoon.

The Millennials are a self-confident generation who embrace multiple channels of self-expression. They have grown up surrounded by diversity and differences, resulting in a changed mindset. Instead of fitting in, they want to show their character. Upbeat and open minded, this generation creates their own personal style by taking inspiration from Classics over several eras. Acutely aware of what suits their personal style; this generation of young men embraces the art of styling hair and is comfortable with the time that that it takes to achieve their individual look. Undercuts are styled with individuality to show unique and distinctive identity. Look for coiffed pompadours, disconnected side parts and cuts that have a classically modern vibe, such as the revamped 80’s mullet. Multiple products may be used to create their finished style, and because Millennials are showing increased interest in socially conscious products, their preference is toward companies that support causes, even if it means paying a bit more for those companies’ products.

OF MYTH AND MUSE

J

Meet EMELIA NATALICCHIO Founder and Designer of OF MYTH AND MUSE The Perfect Combination of Modern and Mystical Interviewed by JESSICA LOMBANA

ESSICA So Em, give us a little insight about your background? EMELIA I am a 25 year old fashion designer and owner of my brand Of Myth and Muse. I grew up in Sugar Land, Texas until moving to Upstate New York for college at Syracuse University. As a kid I would best describe myself as a tomboy, most of my life revolved around soccer. All the extra time I had was spent on painting, drawing, taking photographs, or reading. High School is where I was able to develop more as an artist and figure out what medium I really enjoyed. It wasn’t until senior year that I truly started focusing solely on fashion design. I

have worked backstage at several fashion weeks in New York and Paris. I’ve interned with stylist Katja Cahill in the wardrobe department at the Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, and America’s Got Talent. I also have experience working with fashion designer Wes Gordon in New York City, and a few other brands. JESSICA How did you discover your passion for design? EMELIA I’ve always been artistic and felt the need to create. I would try new mediums of art every few months and

OF MYTH AND MUSE

eventually got into sketching clothes. My senior year of highschool I was able to intern backstage with the wardrobe department at the Grammy Awards. It was an incredible experience that introduced me to styling and being able to work with amazing garments. I spent the rest of high school drawing clothes and also made a friend’s prom dress. When I got to college I knew it was what I wanted to do and changed majors from graphic design to fashion. I have had several internships with stylists and fashion brands. One of the most influential being my internship with New York designer, Wes Gordon. I learned so much working for Wes and couldn’t be more grateful to him and the team of people at his company.

ended up being a great decision for making my dream career a reality. I ended up doing a lot of freelance work and then In my spare time I developed the first collection of designs. It was months of researching manufacturers and developing the vision for my brand. It’s taken a lot of hard work and doing most of it by yourself can be scary. I think it’s all been worth the risk though. Of Myth and Muse is now a branch of my mother’s graphic design company and will be entirely made in the USA. I am presently working with my manufacturer to begin producing a select number of my designs and will be selling soon!

JESSICA Tell us when, where and how Of Myth and Muse was founded? EMELIA Of Myth and Muse was a dream of mine, pretty much my career goal. I wanted to create a collection of versatile, comfortable, and attractive pieces that customers treasure. As much as I loved being in New York, it wasn’t feasible for me to stay. Moving back to Texas

OBSCURAE MAGAZINE 2016 // PAGE 85

OF MYTH AND MUSE

JESSICA What is the aesthetic that characterizes your brand? EMELIA My brand is in the style of what I call ‘Modern Romantic’. Beautiful feminine silhouettes with modern tailored details, making the woman wearing my designs feel lovely and confident. JESSICA What was the inspiration behind your recent collection? EMELIA Of Myth and Muse is a play on words to me. It is my formula for collections. For instance I love mythology, but also how creative street style can be; the solid symbolism and rapidly changing details in one’s personal style. Those are two very constant inspirations behind my designs. Often when I’m designing I will think of a persona for the collection, and shape it with influences from myths and a current muse. For my recent line I was inspired by the natural beauty of the world, rich jewel tones, lunar moths, and goddesses of mythology.

JESSICA In a few words, describe what fashion means to you? EMELIA It’s a way to visually express yourself and in some ways an extension of your personality. It’s always been amazing to me how powerful and interesting an outfit can be. Clothes can tell you so much about a person, they are our daily wearable art form. JESSICA Have you had any fashion shows yet? If so, where? EMELIA I showed in November last year and in January 2016, on the third night at Kaleidoscope Houston. I plan to show in the near future as well. JESSICA What type of woman would represent the characteristics for Of Myth and Muse?

OF MYTH AND MUSE

EMELIA The woman who wears Of Myth and Muse is made up of many things. She is an ever changing mold of beauty. This woman is a modern muse who delights in trends but stays true to her own style. She carries herself like a goddess of myth, and you may not know everything about her but her presence is unforgettable. She paves the way for her own adventures, sees the stars in everyone around her, and makes her feminine nature powerful. JESSICA What piece of advice would you give to young designers who are trying to follow their dreams? EMELIA Experience is the most valuable thing you can have. When starting out as a designer keep your collection small and focus on producing a few great pieces. If you can sew it well yourself, keep sewing. You will save money and can test your market a lot faster. Also budget from start to finish; designing, patterning, grading, samples, production, all of it! I am passionate about having my garments made in the USA and if that is also important to you check out the website www.makersrow.com. It is a great resource for finding

US manufacturers. I also keep a sketchbook on hand at all times, I love the fashionary A4s. JESSICA What has been the most challenging part of being a fashion designer for you? EMELIA Setting up the production process. It’s all trial and error. Most people do not realize the intricacies behind the scenes of a fashion brand. There is so much to keep track of for just one design. It’s a lot to take on, but if you love what you do it’s always worth it. JESSICA Where can we purchase your designs? EMELIA My debut collection is currently being produced in San Francisco and will be available soon for purchase on our website! You can follow Of Myth and Muse at our website www.ofmythandmuse.com, or our social media on facebook and instagram. Of Myth and Muse, romantic yet modern, fashion forward and chic.

DENIS YUSHIN

DAREDEVIL HAIRDRESSER DOING DANGEROUS ADVENTURES DURING HAIRCUTTING Russian hairdresser Denis Yushin (also called motobarber) travelling the world riding his motorcycle, picking the most dangerous places for haircuts: underwater, windsurfing and even paragliding at a height of 1000 feet above the ground. Yushin’s dream is to visit all countries during 6 years and do more adventures during haircutting.

Written by AYAT ELGEZERY

DENIS YUSHIN

A

YAT How many countries have you visited? DENIS Only 11, Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia AYAT Tell me about your first haircut adventure? DENIS It was in Russia. I did it for my friend in the street in 2011, on a bench in the city center. After, I starting doing this in different places: on the mountains, in the river,..etc AYAT How can you reach your customers?

DENIS They can put a point on the map on my website www. motobarber.com and I can come close. AYAT What was the most dangerous haircut adventure? DENIS The windsurfing adventure; as it was dangerous and difficult for me. AYAT What was the most fun one? DENIS Most fun was haircut on paraglide; as we went up into the air three times, first time as a trial. The second time caught behind the pilot and cut his Mohawk. The third times, latched on the front face to face and beard leveled straight razor.

OBSCURAE MAGAZINE 2016 // PAGE 201

DENIS YUSHIN

AYAT Was cutting customers hair under water easier or while paragliding?

AYAT Will you ever try it?

DENIS Underwater haircut was most difficult. It is like other world, gravity, another law. We took a plastic chair, dressing gown, a pair of scissors, a razor and a camera for underwater shooting. We have been preparing for half an hour and had to cut his beard whiskey and place when oxygen is ended and finished cut already on the surface.

DENIS If I dyed hair, then I would have to carry a lot of materials and tools. it would be a hard case that I can to make high-quality work.

AYAT What is your customer’s feedback?

DENIS I want to cut hair during skydiving.

DENIS They like the experience and many people want to try it again.

AYAT Is there anything you would like to add to the interview?

AYAT Did you use a babyliss or dyed customer’s hair in any adventure? DENIS No, I don’t dye hairs, only haircut.

AYAT What’s the next adventure you want to try?

DENIS I would like to add that I want to visit all the countries within 6 years. If anyone wants to participate in my project and a haircut - can put a dot on the map motobarber.com and when I’ll be there.

From the futuristic fantasy world of technology, fashion and art in the Victorian era and American “Wild West” of the 1800s, cover model Amy Wilder has emerged as a celebrity spokesperson for Steampunk enthusiasts worldwide.

F

ollowing the literary footsteps of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, the term, Steampunk, originated in the 1980s with the writings of science fiction writer, K.W. Jeter to better characterize the literary work of Blaylock’s “Lord Kelvin’s Machine”, Powers’ “The Anubis Gates” and his work “Morlock Night” which speculated on the development of steam-based technologies or alternative histories in time. Steampunk themes were brought to life in Walt Disney’s film, “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” (1954), with the design of the submarine and the crew’s underwater gear; and the 1960 film, “The Time Machine” with the design of the time machine itself. The iconic musical group, “The Beatles” performed as Steampunk artists for the album and retro film, “Yellow Submarine” profoundly influencing future musicians and writers. In the 1966 Beatle’s song “Eleanor Rigby” along with the music video “Eleanor’s Dream”, Paul McCartney and Eleanor found themselves transported by song to Victoria England, where they were sent on a futuristic journey, Steampunk in nature. Today, Steampunk fans gather on social media sites such as www.steampunk.com and www.steampunkworldsfair. com, buy their costumes at thrift stores or handmade from remnants, and celebrate Steampunk at regional and national festivals and conventions, called “cons”, which bring together thousands of fans, celebrities, burlesque shows, panel discussions, vendors, and of course, parties with everybody dressed in costumes. In the Victorian era of romantic science fiction and industrialization of the period, ladies often wore floor

length dresses complete with corsets, petticoats, hosiery, and often times, a small top hat with jeweled cuffs and black gloves. From England to the Wild West’s Steampunk, women sport skintight pants, leather corsets, ruffled blouses, knee-high boots, matching belt pouch and western hat with brass googles. Simply said “Steampunk fashion is about creating an outfit that delights the senses, entertains the wearer, and engages the viewer”, and that is exactly why Amy Wilder has fallen in love with Steampunk. During her youth, Amy’s mother bought clothing from garage sales and thrift stores so that Amy and her friends could play dress up imagining being grown-up and traveling to faraway places. As Amy became older, her love for fashion only became stronger and while attending Savannah College of Art & Design she studied fashion design, sculpting and drawing. While working a day job to pay her bills, there was always a little spending money left to create amazing costumes with pieces pulled together from vintage stores, estate sales and even creations of her own. Today, the 24 year old model has accumulated hundreds of costumes from Goth and Alternative to Fantasy, and of course, Steampunk. She has always been a fan of the Steampunk style, but never became aware of the term until attending Dragon Con in 2008. “I thought it was just a cool way people dressed at cons, and for photoshoots. I discovered steampunk culture, and fell absolutely in love with it when I wandered into AnachroCon in Atlanta in 2013, and I’ve been immersed and obsessed ever since,” Amy said in a recent interview. After attending several events, she met Thomas Willeford, founder and creative genius of Brute Force Studios, makers of handmade corsetry, leather goods and Steampunk accessories; and he soon became her mentor where she worked as an intern at the studio and modeled his fashion designs at Steampunk events.

Whenever Amy travels to her favorite cons (San Diego Comic Con, Wild Wild West Con, Anachro Con and Dragon Con), she “meets and greets” her fans, usually dressed in Steampunk costumes, signs posters of herself and participates on speaker panels discussing topics from costume design and styling to tips on makeup and hair. Recently after returning from Wild Wild West Con, Amy collaborated with Obscurae’s creative team to style a few Steampunk outfits accentuated with her signature makeup and hair designs for the photo shoot. Background digital artistryhas been added to the

photographs to create a surreal experience in Steampunk. What’s next for the southern gal from Georgia? Her list is long: design fashion accessories in her workshop, rekindle her love for drawing (her paper napkin, fashion sketches could sell as artwork), continue adding to her costume collection (she needs more closet space), modelling assignments that pay big bucks, share her life experiences and aspirations with her followers on social media, and above all … have fun every day of her journey. “Wow, such a long

list”, and when I asked again, “What’s next after the photo shoot.” She said, “Going to watch Deadpool tonight and then play D&D until three in the morning.”

MANISH’S ZODIAC SIGNS PREDICTIONS FOR APRIL 2016

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April ) - The kind of work or appreciation that you had always wanted is already here with you. Instead of waiting for the ever-elusive perfection, acknowledge what you have and be thankful for all you have received. You may experience endings and new beginnings in work, career as well as relationships. Let go of things, people and situations that are no longer needed for your growth. This month you are also likely to travel a lot. Trips abroad or in far off cities for work as well as leisure are on the cards. Favorable Dates : April 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21 Favorable Colors : White & Grey

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – This month will give you ample opportunities to work on your limiting beliefs. If you have ever found yourself saying that you are not lucky enough or capable enough for something, such situations may come up again forcing you to do something about these and such other beliefs now. Someone from the past may show up which will force you to deal with issues of betrayal and forgiveness. Be open to choosing the best path for yourself. Be gentle with yourself and others. Things will sail smoothly. Favorable Dates : April 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22 Favorable Colors : White & Red Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June) – You will need extra skills in order to balance your professional and personal life. If you can manage to find the balance, you will experience a lot of achievements. You are also likely to be faced with a lot many options and choices. Choose the one for which your head and your heart are in sync. This is also the time when you are likely to meet people from your soul group with whom you might strike immediate friendship. As you spend time with your family and loved ones, it deeply nourishes your soul. Favorable Dates : April 5, 6, 14, 15, 23, 24 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July ) - Work opportunities will be abundant. You will get the support from your bosses as well as colleagues. If you have a business of your own, this is a good time to expand your work. Relationships will be good.
