INFLUENTIAL INTERVIEW
PAOLO My grandmother has really passed down her view of sewing, I guess. Her attitude towards it; the work ethic and the discipline. She truly sees it as an art. She’s quite PAOLO I’m really well, thank you. I’m excited because we’re start- a perfectionist in that regard. The work that she did was always meticulous. She comes from that generation where ing work on the new collection. sewing is an art, and I want to continue that. When I look at the pieces that she’s made I’m still inspired by the craftsOBSCURAE manship. That’s what I really love about this industry; the Have you always wanted to be a designer? techniques, seeing fabrics worked in a different way. That’s definitely where my passion lies. PAOLO When I was very young it wasn’t something that I knew I wanted to be because I didn’t know that it was a job. I just OBSCURAE Do you do a lot of the same designs your grandmother loved making things and working with fabrics; I loved does? drawing. OBSCURAE Hello Paolo, how are you today?
At a young age, I was really interested in what I know now is designing. But I didn’t feel like that really young kid that thought, “This is what I want to be when I grow up,” until I was about ten. OBSCURAE What did your grandmother teach you about design?
PAOLO I work in the same way as my grandmother, in the sense that a lot of things are done by hand. OBSCURAE What is the most interesting person you had to design for?

“I’VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVEWORKED WITH MANY PEOPLE AMONG THEM HAVE BEEN KRIS JENNER, GUILIANA RANCIC, DANNII MINGOUE.”

PAOLO I’ve designed pieces for some really amazing people. My clients themselves are wonderful, and working with them is always really rewarding. Carrie Bickmore is an Australian journalist and this year I had the honour of dressing her for the 2015 Logie Awards in Australia. She is an inspiration and just an amazing person. Carrie used her acceptance speech to promote the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, and we were so proud of her. OBSCURAE Do you enjoy doing runway designs? PAOLO I love working on our collections. That’s my opportunity to put everything that’s in my mind out into the world. That’s the most exciting thing about runway shows and putting together a collection; it’s a whole vision that really comes together. There’s always a story behind it, which I really love to develop.
PAOLO I just wanted to do this job because I loved it. I never expected the fame. It still surprises me today, hearing from people on the other side of the world who want to talk about my work. OBSCURAE Do you enjoy doing red carpet designs? PAOLO Of course. It’s a great honour to have your design on that kind of platform, and the people that we work with are always really enthusiastic about the label. OBSCURAE How long does it generally take you to design your very elaborate pieces?
OBSCURAE Who was the most note-worthy person you’ve designed for?
PAOLO It’s definitely a process. It all starts with a concept. I then do a sketch. At this stage I might do a few different versions of the same design. Once it starts in production we have to pattern-make, cut and select our finalised fabric. Then the making of the piece can take hundred of hours.
I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with many wonderful people. Among them have been Kris Jenner, Giuliana Rancic, and Dannii Minogue.
OBSCURAE Do you have any advice that you’d like to give to upcoming designers?
OBSCURAE You were really young when you started designing, did you always see yourself as a famous designer?
PAOLO Stay true to yourself. Be prepared to work. It’s a very rewarding job but you have to work hard at it. Keep good people around you; be positive!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION? EVERY YEAR WE DO SOMETHING THAT IS ALMOST LIKE A PUNISHMENT FOR ALL WE DID THE YEAR BEFORE AND MAKE A NEGATIVE IMPACT FOR THE NEXT YEAR. WE END UP GETTING FRUSTRATED OR GIVING UP ON THINGS WE ENJOY TRYING TO MAKE UP FOR IT AND IN MOST CASES QUIT WAY BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. INSTEAD WE GIVE GREAT IDEAS FOR A POSITIVE SOLUTION ON HOW TO TAKE A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION. BELOW WE WILL GIVE A NEGATIVE WE USUALLY TURN TO AND TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE APPROACH THAT IS MORE DO-ABLE AND FUN FOR EVERYONE.

to budget correctly. There are a lot of seminars out there on this that can help you improve the way you spend that way next year we won’t have the stress of the holidays on us or the looming feeling of debt.
THE NEW YEARS BRINGS ON A LOT OF STRESS ON HOW TO IMPROVE OURSELVES FOR THE NEXT YEAR. SOME OF US HAD A ROUGH YEAR AND WANT TO IMPROVE OUR NEXT YEAR BY MAKING CHANGES. A LOT OF US GO THROUGH A LOT OF NEGATIVE IMPULES TO CHANGE WHAT WE POSSIBLY DID ‘WRONG’ FOR THAT YEAR. IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THAT AND MAKE A BEAUTIFUL POSITIVE MARK ON THE NEXT YEAR!
