he growing number of Polokwane residents reporting their water bills to be reflecting figures their water meters have not yet reached confirms allegations that Polokwane Municipality is fabricating meter readings and taking ratepayers for a ride. The month old statement shows a reading higher than the current real reading on the meter.

muni distorts readings affected residents, Mr Tjol Lategan, whose water bill from a month ago indicates a meter reading that the meter has not reached yet. Lategan’s bill from last month shows that his meter reading at the time was 716 while on Tuesday when Polokwane Observer visited him, it was only 697. Lategan, who has been experiencing the problem since last year and has approached the municipality several times and even written to both the municipal manager and the executive mayor with no effect, believes the problem is not the meter readers. “I have been monitoring these meter readings and every time they come to read the meter I approach them and make sure they enter the correct reading and they do enter the correct readings, the problem seems to be between when they submit to when I get my statement,” Lategan said. The effect of the exaggerated readings is that ratepayers are charged excessively because of the penalties are imposed when consumption exceed a certain threshold. A number of accounts have shown meter readings that were either too low, in some instances show that households used no water at all or the meter readings were too high To page 2
