WELCOME TO OUR WINTER/SPRING SEASON BROCHURE 2017 has been a year unlike any other for The Octagon Team as we gained a whole new venue in Westlands. With the new venue came many new team members who have brought fresh ideas, skills, passion and energy. There have been new chances for the team to try and learn new things and opportunities for us to present a whole new range of events, entertainment and experiences. This year has brought many challenges and I am incredibly proud of how the staff and Foyer Club volunteers have worked so hard and pushed themselves to give our guests the best possible experience. Darcey Bussell coming to perform the Official Opening of Westlands was a joyful day and a fitting celebration. It was a thrill to meet her and she really is as lovely as she seems.
We’ve enjoyed record attendance at The Octagon Theatre and are certainly not resting on our laurels when it comes to our ambitions for our ‘first home’. As we head towards my favourite time of year - the pantomime season - I am delighted to share with you details of forthcoming performances and events that we hope will entertain, inspire and educate. I hope 2018 will find you enjoying time at our venues with friends and family. There is so much to see and do I hope you’ll find yourself ‘spoilt for choice’. With Best Wishes Adam Burgan Arts & Entertainment Venues Manager & all the staff at The Octagon Theatre & Westlands

THE TRANSPORTS A TALE OF EXILE AND MIGRATION The Transports tells the incredible tale of a family destroyed by poverty and crime, but resurrected by exile to the new colony in Australia. With a fresh script and musical arrangement, this famous show re-emerges within a modern context of mass migration. The stellar line-up for this exciting new production includes The Young’uns, Faustus, Nancy Kerr, Rachael McShane, Greg Russell and Matthew Crampton. This new production features musical arrangements by Paul Sartin of Bellowhead and Faustus. Two-time BBC Folk Award winners The Young’uns bring their trademark live dynamism. Further musical excellence comes from Faustus’ Benji Kirkpatrick and Saul Rose.
After taking to the road over 22 years ago and touring all over the world the phenomenon returns with its latest brand new incarnation Voodoo VaudEvil.
Storyteller Matthew Crampton has created fresh narration for the show, amplifying its central tale into a broader exploration of exile and migration.
The spectacular show features an amazing amalgamation of bizarre and fantastic circus acts all woven into a sensational shock/horror story - taking the show to a whole new level, it’s driven by a mainly original soundscape and performed with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek.
Supported by
“Fantastic, that’s what I call entertainment” David Hasselhoff
“You have to go and see this, one day something will go wrong and you will be able to say I was there” Graham Norton WARNING: This show is not for the faint-hearted. Contains nudity, strong language and scenes that some people may find disturbing.

ELKIE BROOKS
Head to the little French town of Morts Ennuyeux and you’ll enter the world of the inventor Maurice, his beautiful daughter Belle and a whole host of colourful characters as he stumbles across the castle of The Beast, the once handsome Prince Dacey, now magically transformed by the Enchantress for not giving her shelter from the storm.
Long before the end of a live show and the frequent standing ovations that accompany it, there comes a point where Elkie does something so amazing that it leaves her audience almost spellbound. It could be a particularly emotional rendition of one of her ballads, a powerhouse blues vocal or one of her trademark impossibly long notes that leaves the audience mesmerised.
Can Maurice and Belle save him from forever being this terrible monster? Come along and join us to find out in this Tale As Old As… well you know the rest!
Elkie will be performing her biggest hits including Pearl’s A Singer, Lilac Wine, Fool (If You Think It’s Over), Don’t Cry Out Loud and No More The Fool as well as many more featured on her recent hit album Elkie Brooks - Pearls - The Very Best Of.
Join Yeovil Amateur Pantomime Society in their biggest panto yet where fancy dress and audience participation is encouraged in this toe-tapping, clap-along, dance-if-youwant Beast of a Pantomime.

MILTON JONES IS OUT THERE Milton Jones is out there. No, really out there and this time he hasn’t just forgotten his keys.
LLOYD & ROSE BUCK: OUR LIFE WITH BIRDS It’s not often you see birds on stage in a theatre and even more rare to see one flying over the audience. But Our Life With Birds promises to give audiences a rare opportunity to meet Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, hawks, owls, starlings and many more all raised and trained with the utmost loving care by bird handlers Lloyd and Rose Buck. This show is illustrated with Lloyd and Rose’s own film footage and photography and is suitable for all ages. It promises to be an interactive wildlife experience like no other!
“The Bucks are remarkable people because when they do imprint, they form a bond they can’t break and it means those swans are with them for life”
He’s holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means it’s probably just a window. In his brand new show he’ll be putting his foot down and lifting the lid on the pedal bin of lies of the media. He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat. Milton will be talking about his life so far the ups, the downs and why buying his own see-saw was the best decision he ever made. But perhaps he should give all this up and seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can!

A stage play by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter adapted from the original TV series by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. An amateur production with kind permission of Tiger Aspect Productions. This side splitting stage adaptation, brought to life by new community project - Project Play, is everything you could possibly want it to be. It brings the exacting humour and characters to the stage that viewers have ‘roared’ at through their television sets.
From the somewhat inappropriate Owen Newitt to the dithering Jim ‘no-no-no-no’ Trott, the officious Frank Pickle to the culinary challenged Letitia Cropley, all the iconic villagers are portrayed, headed up by the pompous David Horton and his much put-upon son Hugo and then of course there’s Alice Tinker… Simply unmissable.
Following the untimely death of the Reverend Pottle, Dibley has been appointed a new vicar though, as she is a babe with a bob-cut and a magnificent bosom, her reception proves to be less than welcoming.

THEMED PARTY NIGHT
FAUSTUS
They have a plethora of experience between them, brought together here in a virtuosic display of musicianship and testosterone. Rooted deeply in the English tradition, in 2007 they received a 75th Anniversary Award from the English Folk Dance and Song Society. Faustus came together in 2006 as an evolution of the award winning band Dr. Faustus. They made an eponymous debut album in 2008, which saw them nominated as the Best Group in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Touring saw them headlining at festivals, as well as playing sell-out concerts at arts centres and clubs. After a two year break they returned in 2011 and released the new album Broken Down Gentlemen (Navigator Records) in spring 2013.

LEVELLERS WITH SUPPORT FROM GINGER WILDHEART
Celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2018, Brighton folk-punk band Levellers are touring around the release of an acoustic album recorded at Abbey Road Studios with legendary producer John Leckie.
Directed by: Brian Epps Choreographer: Sheila Driver Musical Director: Gill Merrifield
Emerging victorious through the ups and downs of label deals, spats with the music press and the wear and tear of touring, the Levellers are still going strong. They have long been and still are, one of the best live bands around but, often overlooked is their impressive back catalogue of recorded music.
Packed full of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits including, Cheek To Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie & Tails, Let’s Face the Music & Dance and Puttin’ On The Ritz, Top Hat tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont. An uplifting and hilarious romantic comedy celebrating 1930s song, style and romance, Top Hat dazzles with glorious, tap-dancing magic, beautiful ballroom dancing and a love story that will set the pulse racing!
The Levellers sold more platinum, gold, and silver albums in the 1990s than any other act. They’ve had 7 Top 40 albums, including the number 1 album Zeitgeist and their platinumselling 1991 album Levelling The Land, and a number of Top 40 singles including This Garden, Hope St, Just The One and What A Beautiful Day.

THE GRIMETHORPE COLLIERY BAND
RICHARD HERRING “I only regret the people I didn’t have sex with… And 60% of the people I did have sex with.”
The brass bands of this country are unique, and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band is unique amongst them. The band’s contest successes remain legendary. These include 16 Brass In Concert Championship titles, 11 times Yorkshire Regional Champions, two English National Championship victories, four times British Open Champions and four times National Champion Brass Band of Great Britain. Grimethorpe's diverse noted concert performances include those at the FIFA World Cup, BAFTA Awards, BBC Proms, Eurovision and London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, together with a wealth of national and international television/radio appearances and professional recordings. The band has been the recipient of two gold discs, as well as a BAFTA nomination for its contributions to the global hit movie Brassed Off for which Grimethorpe was the focal point.
“Podfather” (the Guardian) and star of Radio 4’s Relativity, Richard Herring gets to the half century (against all odds) and looks at how his life has changed in the last decade, from irresponsible, single kidult, literally fighting his way through a mid-life crisis, to married father who is mid-way to the telegram from the Queen (though given she will be 140 in 2067, she might forget to send it). Following on from Oh F***, I’m 40!, this is the second (and let’s face it, almost certainly penultimate) instalment in Herring’s once-adecade examination of ageing.

“Grimethorpe Colliery Band - the finest jewel in the world of brass bands, and a unique cultural asset” Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
