Welcome to our Autumn/Winter Season of shows and events at The Octagon Theatre and Westlands Entertainment Venue. I hope you will be spoilt for choice as you look through the diverse range of amazing performances coming to South Somerset. We have enjoyed a record-breaking year across both of our venues, selling over 152,000 tickets, with more people enjoying our venues than ever before. I am delighted that Westlands continues to welcome new guests and that we are ahead of our business plan targets. Over the summer months we are investing in an air cooling system for the Octagon auditorium, so from September we will be able to keep you nice and cool. We are also integrating new LED lighting in the auditorium that will make us more energy efficient. Next summer the investment continues when we will replace the seating. You can play your part and celebrate your support for The Octagon Theatre by naming a seat. With Best Wishes Adam Burgan Arts & Entertainment Venues Manager The Octagon Theatre & Westlands

THE NUTCRACKER

DON QUIXOTE

FEATURING A LIVE ORCHESTRA WITH OVER 30 MUSICIANS Music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky

Music by Ludwig Minkus

Russian State Ballet and Opera House returns for their annual UK tour with a vibrant and enchanting ballet production.

Don Quixote delights in stories of brave knights, fabulous giants and other fantastical creatures. He dreams of his beloved Dulcinea, a woman that he believes to be so lovely and noble that she must be divine.

Snow flurries, sweets, princes, magic and love are just some of the elements that will be brought together by this renowned Russian company. A highly accessible ballet, full of familiar music such as the Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Nutcracker is an eternal seasonal favourite, directed and choreographed by the former award-winning Bolshoi Ballet Soloist, Konstantin Uralsky. This ballet continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of all generations across the world. It is a truly captivating piece of theatre, a wonderful introduction to ballet whilst retaining its appeal for anyone who is familiar with it.

When Don Quixote notices Kitri, the innkeeper’s daughter, he acclaims her as his Dulcinea, whom evil magicians have reduced to human form. He is then confronted with a spell of unexpected situations, tricks and challenging duels. Don Quixote has all the elements of the great classical ballets: emotion, drama and unforgettable characters. Love, duels and spectacular choreography are mixed with a dash of Spanish passion in this most beautiful and moving ballet.

MARK WATSON

SHOW OF HANDS

THE INFINITE SHOW

NOW WE ARE FOUR

Cluster-bombed with yoghurt on Taskmaster, half-killed on Bear Grylls’ Celebrity Island, Watson returns to what he's best at: being indoors.

Show of Hands fans rejoice as Steve Knightley and Phil Beer, two undisputed Kings of the folk, roots and acoustic scene reunite with long-term collaborator Miranda Sykes for a brand-new album and tour. And there’s more, because the trio is expanding to include master percussionist Cormac Byrne who returns with his infectious rhythms by popular demand. With new songs, new sounds, heartbeats and harmonies.

Inspired by the mostly alarming state of the world his children are growing up in, and a genuine, urgent desire to do something about it, this show is about empathy. 99 percent of the world's population is made up of other people: why can't we understand them? As scrawny and impassioned as ever, one of the UK's most beloved and thinnest acts offers some suggestions, with his usual notoriously high joke and rant per minute rate. Age Recommendation: 14+ This performance may contain adult material that some might find offensive.

BOYS DANCE COMPANY

YOUTH DANCE COMPANY

We want to get more boys dancing.

We are developing a Youth Dance Company as part of the Octagon Academy.

Here at the Octagon we are developing our dance programme and starting an all-boys Youth Dance Company. The classes will be highly physical, fun and most importantly creative. Dancers will be encouraged to find their own creative voices and collective strength. Classes will commence in September 2019 for ages 10-16 running on Tuesday evenings from 6-7pm.

Dancers will devise, create and receive multiple opportunities to perform across South Somerset. We are looking for talented, committed, enthusiastic and motivated dancers aged 12-18. To join, budding dancers will be asked to attend an audition workshop. Prior dance experience is desirable; however we encourage dancers of all backgrounds to have a go as we are looking for dancers with natural flair and creativity. Auditions will be taking place on 17th September 7 - 8.30pm with classes starting a week later and running every Tuesday 7 - 8.30pm.

Throughout the year all our dancers will work with professional dance companies, have exclusive access to rehearsals and get to meet artists at private events. If you are interested or require more information please contact Gemma Gubb. Gemma.gubb@southsomerset.gov.uk Classes are ÂŁ3 per session. We believe that the cost of our dance classes and events should not be a barrier to participation and support the Passport to Leisure Scheme.
