RAMIN KARIMLOO

AND THE BROADGRASS BAND: LEAD ME HOME

Olivier and Tony Award nominee Ramin is best known for playing leading roles in both of the West End’s longest running musicals The Phantom and Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, and Jean Valjean, Enjolras, and Marius in Les Misérables. He also originated the role of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies and made his Broadway debut as Valjean in the 2014 revival production of Les Misérables. Ramin said ‘I am looking forward to taking our Broadgrass show on the road for an extended run, especially here in the UK. It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go around the country. These will be the only UK dates before I head off back to Broadway to open the premier of Anastasia.’ Ramnin goes on to say ‘Broadgrass has organically evolved now for about 4 years. We have found a unique sound that we are all passionate about from songs from the shows, to originals to covers that mean something to us in the band.’ The Circus of Horrors celebrates its 21st anniversary as it takes to the road with its latest incarnation The Never-Ending Nightmare. The spectacular show features an amazing amalgamation of bizarre, brave and beautiful acts all woven into an Alice in Horrorland type story driven by a mainly original soundscape and performed with a forked-tongue firmly in each cheek!

“I loved it” Simon Cowell

“You have to go & see this, one day something will go wrong & you will be able to say I was there!” Graham Norton WARNING: This show is not for the faint-hearted.

Did dinosaurs eat their own families? Was every Tyrannosaur a fearsome carnivore? Why did Allosaurus headbutt its prey to death?

YEOVILTON MILITARY WIVES CHOIR The Yeovilton Military Wives Choir return to The Octagon following their 2016 sell out concert. Once again the choir will take its audience on an inspirational musical journey, from patriotic World War favourites to modern day classics and featuring a special selection of their own songs, made famous through the widely televised work of Gareth Malone. This stirring concert also promises a few surprises along the way.

With the help of TV film footage and photos of his own palaeontological dinosaur digs, he will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about dinosaurs - and more. PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLIVE CONWAY PRODUCTIONS

Starring Hayley Mills

THE STORY OF PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Created to honour the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death in 2017, this promises to be an unusually intimate performance of the beloved author’s most famous work - one of the most popular novels of all time. The enduring story of the romance between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy will be read by Hayley Mills in a drawing-room setting, in much the same way that Jane herself first read the story aloud to the Austen family and their closest friends. And weaving around those words will be a magical soundtrack, including excerpts from Carl Davis' memorable score to the much loved BBC TV drama series from the 1990s alongside other popular works from the classical repertoire. The music, specially adapted for this show, will be performed by two of the UK's most sought after musicians: pianist Ashley Wass, and violinist Matthew Trusler. The book has been abridged by novelist and Austen biographer, Gill Hornby.

FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS

The original buoy band, the Fisherman’s Friends are back with a vengeance, getting ready to hit the road with a full catch of new material and some old favourites as well. Bound together by lifelong friendship and shared experience for more than 20 years the Fisherman’s Friends have met on the Platt in their native Port Isaac on Cornwall's rugged north coast to raise money for charity by singing the traditional songs of the sea handed down to them by their forefathers. In 2010 they signed a major record deal and their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends went Gold as they became the first traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album. Since then they’ve been the subject of an ITV documentary, released the hit albums and played to tens of thousands of fans at home and abroad. The Fisherman’s Friends have been widely credited with starting the revival of interest in shanty-style choral singing but a cornerstone of their success has been their constantly evolving and expanding repertoire.

PICTURE SHOW

BEN PORTSMOUTH: THE KING IS BACK The World’s Number One Elvis Tribute Artist. Ben, a multi-talented musician, singer and songwriter had Elvis’ DNA in his blood from an early age. His father was an avid Elvis fan and Ben grew up on a diet of Elvis songs. Having honed his musical talent Ben started his journey as an Elvis Tribute Artist in 2005 when he formed the Taking Care of Elvis band. Audiences quickly realised that this was someone with a special talent. He looked like Elvis, sang like Elvis and had an on stage charisma that had audiences believing at times they were watching the King himself. This talent saw Ben rapidly rise through the ranks of Elvis Tribute Artists.

THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN HERESY II HERITAGE

This Orchestra, from its beginnings as outsiders playing an outsider instrument, 31 years ago has become an internationally renowned institution. It has been invited to perform for the British Royal Family, at the Houses of Parliament, at the BBC Proms, the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall. But the performers are still heretics poking fun at the cultural elite, defying you to believe their own hype, and be amused by all the hot air. This group, on an ongoing “hand-luggage only” world tour, provide pure entertainment, dead-pan British humour and foot-tapping music. It is always doing the unexpected, whether re-imagining folk songs, twisting classical music favourites, uncovering quirky versions of rock covers, or playing the performers’ own all-original compositions. They walk on stage with only a ukulele each, and from their formal black-tie opening, proceed to tear the house down as they wow the audience and make friends everywhere. This group, the one which started the world-wide phenomenon of the Ukulele Orchestra has grown; from curiosity to virtuosity, from opacity to veracity, from performers to barn-stormers. This cavalcade of renegades, once undersized now idolised, has been transformed From Heresy to Heritage.

“Oh, Mr Horne! How bona to vada your dolly old eek!” From 1965 to 1968 there wasn’t a bigger radio programme in Britain than the groundbreaking Round the Horne. For half an hour every Sunday afternoon, audiences of up to 15 million people would gather around the wireless to listen to Kenneth Horne and his merry crew get up to all sorts of mischief. With its infamous movie spoofs and hilarious regular characters such as Rambling Sid Rumpo, Charles and Fiona, J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock, and Julian and Sandy, Round the Horne was one of the biggest and best radio comedy shows of all time, and still endures today, 50 years on. So come and take a step back in time to the BBC’s Paris Studios and experience this comedy classic live.

RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY The ever-musical Richard Alston Dance Company returns with a programme of works to musical scores that originate from completely different worlds. Firstly Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance evokes the tightly controlled but volatile energy of modern tango in his brand new piece Tangent with music by the father of Tango Nuevo Astor Piazzolla. Then Alston’s Isthmus Remix and Holderlin Fragments explore the precision in contrasting but equally spare pieces of music by Japanese composer Jo Kondo and Benjamin Britten respectively. To close the evening Richard Alston’s Nomadic mixes Asian-influenced traditional Romany singing with the toughness of an urban beat. To explore the interaction between gypsy music and urban sound, Alston has collaborated with the hip hop choreographer Ajani Johnson-Goffe.

“Echoing cheers for Alston and his dancers”

KILLER QUEEN Fronted by Patrick Myers as Freddie Mercury, Killer Queen have been performing their tribute to Queen’s concert since 1993. Their expert musicianship, extraordinary energy and accurate portrayal of the world’s greatest live band have rightfully earned Killer Queen the title of Queen tribute royalty. Thrilling sell-out audiences across the globe from the UK to Moscow and in 2016 their first tour of USA, Killer Queen recreates the high energy, powerful phenomenon that was Queen live.

THE BIG CHRIS BARBER BAND Chris Barber OBE (86) is one of the last British Jazz legends around and an icon of traditional jazz in the United Kingdom. For more than 68 years he has been active in the music scene with promoting, recording and releasing music and touring with his band. A milestone. This year he and his band: The Big Chris Barber Band will celebrate 100 Years of Jazz, under the theme: Centenary of Jazz. In early 1917 the very first Jazz record was released by the Original Dixieland Jass Band: Livery Stable Blues. In the beginning 90’s, Chris Barber and partnering label Timeless Records re-released this very special record under the sub label Timeless Historical Series, where Chris coordinated the label as co-producer. Now, in 2017 (a century later) the record from Original Dixieland Jass Band will have existed for 100 years. A moment to celebrate for Chris. Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. It’s hard to believe that 40 years have now passed since Marc’s tragic fatal car accident and fans have mourned the loss of a truly individual, inspirational talent ever since. Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs including 20th Century Boy, Get It On and I Love To Boogie have ensured that Marc Bolan and T.Rex have become one of the most memorable and enduring bands of the seventies. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. They have become widely accepted as the world’s only official tribute show dedicated to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc’s family, estate and catalogue management, not to mention original members of T.Rex. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. www.trextasy.com

Worried about your job? Worried about your family? Worried about yourself? Worried about the health service? Education? Climate change? World War 3? Worried about worrying?

SPRING FORWARD Take Art’s annual county youth dance platform Spring Forward returns to The Octagon Theatre and as ever brings together young, inspiring dancers from across Somerset to perform on this professional stage. Spring Forward features performances by Somerset school groups, youth dance companies and dance schools. Groups that perform include Somerset Youth Dance Company and the Octagon Academy groups.

Sod it! Come and have a laugh about it. It’s one of the things we do best. Or is it? Was it something we did best but like everything else has now gone West. Or South. Or East. Ah - go on. Take a risk. Put on your lucky pants and your party shoes - and get yourself on a night out. Or maybe come out dressed in a binbag, top hat and clogs. We could all use a laugh. As seen on Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Q.I. etc. - and repeated on Dave.

Join Ballet Theatre UK in one of the greatest ballets of all time, Giselle. A tragically romantic tale of a young girl who falls deeply in love and is soon deceived for her lover was betrothed to another. Through despair and desperation the young girl kills herself as she could not live without him. The Queen of the Wilis, along with the ghosts of young girls who die before their wedding nights, condemns the lover to dance to his death. He can only be saved by the intervention of the spirit of Giselle and the break of dawn which forces the Wilis to flee. Andy Fairweather Low came to prominence as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit. Songs such as Bend Me Shape Me, Hello Suzy, (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice are internationally remembered to this day. But if you were paying close attention you might have picked up a clue in the magnificent Gin House to Andy’s future musical collaborations. Andy has been touring and releasing Albums since then and is building a strong following having now released four Albums, one live DVD and a three disc box set DVD / double live CD which debuted in the Amazon Box Set Top 50 in its very first week of release.

First performed in 1841, Giselle has never lost its popularity with audiences, considered to be one of the jewels in the crown of the romantic repertoire. Featuring a full Corps de Ballet of 24 international dancers along with critically acclaimed Principal Dancers, Ballet Theatre UK present this haunting classic in its full glory set to the stunning music by Adolphe Adam.

2013 saw Andy and the band opening the shows on Eric’s European tour headline The Americana Festival and complete their first tour in Japan with 8 shows in Tokyo. Their UK Autumn 2013 tour in support of the Zone O Tone was so well received that further early Spring dates in 2014 were added in the UK and Germany. A remarkable band; a remarkable front man… Follow them into 2017!

SWANSEA CITY OPERA PRESENTS

by LÉO DELIBES Director & Set Design: BRENDAN WHEATLEY Musical Director: JOHN BESWICK Costume Design: GABRIELLA INGRAM Sung in English.

LEE NELSON: SERIOUS JOKER

This jewel of an opera is best known for the famous Flower Duet, which has become one of the most familiar numbers any composer, in any genre, has ever written, even used by our national airline on TV ads as the peaceful accompaniment to a jetliner floating through wispy clouds!

After getting into trouble for sneaking into places he shouldn’t be, Lee Nelson is back where he most definitely should be: live on stage with his brand-new, laugh-out-loud, best ever stand-up show.

As so often with operas that become famous for a particular tune however, Lakmé contains many other hidden musical gems including the stratospheric and challenging Bell Song.

“Comedy Legend”

Like other French operas of the period, it captures the ambience of the Orient seen through Western eyes and, topically for today, tells of religious tensions and conflict leading to personal sacrifice, heartbreak and death. There will be a pre-performance talk about the opera and production given by the Artistic Director of Swansea City Opera, Brendan Wheatley.
