WELCOME The Yeovil Literary Festival is a partnership between Waterstones, The Yeovil Community Arts Association, Yeovil Library and The Octagon Theatre, which is part of South Somerset District Council. The festival was created to inspire, stimulate and delight residents and visitors to South Somerset. This year marks the fourth annual Yeovil Literary Festival. Our love of literature and appreciation for how a good book can allow you to escape, learn something new or simply put a smile on your face continues to encourage us to bring writers, thinkers, celebrities and broadcasters together. We look forward to welcoming you to our venues and are grateful to all the artists, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who is contributing to making the Yeovil Literary Festival a success. In Conversation with Kirsty Wark We are excited to welcome Victoria Hislop, the multi-million-copy bestselling author of The Island and The Sunrise, to this year’s festival. Sinclair McKay The Spies of Winter

Following on from the enormous success of his bestseller, The Secret Life of Bletchley Park, Sinclair McKay now uncovers the story of what happened after the Second World War was over. Murder in the Library Hosting the event will be Clare Donoghue whose first novel, Never Look Back, whilst still an unpublished manuscript, was long-listed for the CWA Debut Dagger. Her latest novel is Trust No One. Sharon Bolton (previously SJ Bolton) has won the CWA Dagger in the Library and been shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger and the Theakstons Old Peculier awards. Her latest bestseller is Daisy in Chains. Elly Griffiths has twice been shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library, and three times for the Theakstons Award for books for the Ruth Galloway series. Her new book is a Stephens & Mephisto mystery, The Blood Card. Tammy Cohen writes psychological thrillers, her latest being the greatly reviewed, When She Was Bad. Kate Williams The Edge of the Fall

Bestselling author, social historian and broadcaster Kate Williams will be talking about her latest novel, The Edge of the Fall. Ian Ross

Sir Ranulph Fiennes Sir Ranulph Fiennes was, with Charles Burton, the first man to reach both Poles by surface travel and, with Mike Stroud, the first to cross the Antarctic Continent unsupported. He is the only person yet to have been awarded two clasps to the Polar medal for both Antarctic and the Arctic regions. Fiennes has led over 30 expeditions including the first polar circumnavigation of the Earth, and in 2003 he ran seven marathons in seven days on seven continents in aid of the British Heart Foundation, 3½ months after a massive heart attack. In 1993 Her Majesty the Queen awarded Fiennes the Order of the British Empire (OBE) because, on the way to breaking records, he has raised over £17 million for charity. He has written 23 books, his most recent being Heat.

Greg Jenner

From Stone Age to Phone Age: The History of Your Morning Routines Every day of our lives, we go through the same basic rituals and routines that our ancestors also practised - washing, using the toilet, eating, drinking, communicating, socializing, walking the dog etc. In this cheerfully entertaining talk, historian Greg Jenner (Historical Consultant to BBC’s Horrible Histories, and co-host of BBC2’s Inside Versailles) offers a whistle-stop tour of how your morning routines evolved over millennia.

Westland ONE This film, made by students at Yeovil College, tells the story of when G-Lynx, call sign Westland ONE, set the World Helicopter Speed Record. A record that has never been beaten. It was a major stand-out moment in the 100 year history of Westland and, at the height of the so called ‘Westland Affair’ when the company faced ruin, it proved Westland’s capability for designing and producing the best helicopters in the world. Watch the film and then ask questions of former Westland engineers in a panel discussion chaired by Steve Haigh of Radio Ninesprings.

Ann Cleeves Cold Earth

Ann Cleeves, award-winning and bestselling crime author, who created the work on which the two major TV hits Shetland and Vera are based, will be giving an insight into her incredible career and discussing her exciting new Shetland crime novel, Cold Earth. Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is Great Britain’s first Olympic Ski Jumper. Eddie was ranked 55th in the world which qualified him as the only GB applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Although he did not win an Olympic medal, he did win a place in the hearts of spectators all around the globe. Since the ’88 Winter Games, Eddie has been a regular on television and radio, more recently competing in BBC1’s Let’s Dance for Sport Relief (making it to the Final on public votes) and winning BBC’s Winter Wipeout and ITV’s Splash. Eddie is currently the jump coach on Channel 4’s The Jump.

Virginia Baily Early One Morning

We are pleased to welcome Virginia Baily to the festival to talk about her amazing novel, Early One Morning. The former ‘Waterstones Book of the Month’ choice had everyone captivated. Set in occupied Italy in 1943, it’s a beautifully written story of a young woman who for one moment locks eyes with a mother being herded onto a truck - she runs to rescue the woman’s little boy. Joe Swift Joe has been a regular designer and presenter on BBC Gardener’s World since 1998. He has designed many gardens on TV, including a garden for Comic Relief, the Bourneville garden, a Water garden and a Family garden for Gardeners World. He designed all the gardens for Alan Titchmarsh’s How to be a Gardener 2 series, and has designed and filmed 50 Garden Invaders for BBC1 in 2003 and 2004. He designed the Gardener’s World 40 year anniversary garden in 2007. Joe writes for The Times weekend magazine and Gardeners World Magazine amongst others, and has written three books. Simon Weston My Life; My Story

It was the conflict of a generation and one that many will never forget. Amongst those who were sent to the Falklands was Simon Weston OBE. In one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentine planes - aboard at the time was Simon. Eventually, and against the odds, Simon escaped the burning and buckled ship, but only after suffering 46% burns to his body. Today he has become one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and for the first time ever Simon is taking to the stage to tell his story with no holds barred.

Stephen Moss Wild Kingdom

From otters in the Tyne to peregrines in London, a quest into the state of British wildlife today - and how it’s fighting back. Stephen Moss is a naturalist, broadcaster, television producer and author. In a distinguished career at the BBC Natural History Unit his credits include Springwatch, Birds Britannica and The Nature of Britain. His books include A Bird in the Bush, A Sky Full of Starlings, The Bumper Book of Nature and Wild Hares and Hummingbirds.

Peter Davison In Conversation

We are excited to welcome a TV legend to the festival. While forever known as the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison’s career in television and theatre has spanned over four decades and made him a memorable face to millions. From 1970s classic All Creatures Great and Small to Law and Order: UK via his tenure as the Doctor in the 1980’s, Peter has rarely been off our TV screens. John Crace & John Sutherland The Incomplete Shakespeare

To celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s death John Crace, author of The Guardian’s Digested Reads, and Professor John Sutherland have teamed up to write a series of short parodies of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. John Crace brings his wonderfully funny style to ‘digest’ the plays, while John Sutherland provides informative notes alongside. TICKETS: £9 MEMBERS: £7.50

Julian Hight

World Tree Story - An Illustrated Talk Following the success of Britain’s Tree Story for The National Trust, Julian set off on a five year photographic odyssey, capturing 100 ancient, historic trees across 39 countries for this fascinating and lovingly researched hardback book. John Whaite John Whaite is a British chef, food writer and TV personality. Probably best known for winning the third series of the BBC’s The Great British Bake Off, John now runs his own cookery school, John Whaite’s Kitchen, set in the heart of rural Lancashire. John’s passion for food came from cooking with his mother and was developed further through his studies at Le Cordon Bleu. Following his experience on The Great British Bake Off, John decided to don his apron full time as resident chef on ITV’s Lorraine and as a presenter on ITV’s food programme Chopping Block with Rosemary Shrager. John’s recipes can be found in his books, John Whaite Bakes, John Whaite Bakes at Home and Perfect Plates in 5 Ingredients.

Junior creative Tim Callaghan can hardly believe his luck when he’s flown out to Dubai to supervise the filming of an advert for an international charity. Car Parking The main car park is situated opposite the theatre at the Petters Way car park. Additional spaces are available at the Goldenstones leisure facilities at Yeovil Country Park. Parking is free after 6.00pm and all day on Sundays. Access For All Everyone is welcome at the festival and we will do whatever we can to ensure you have an enjoyable visit. Staff are available to help, so please ask us if you need any assistance. To ensure any special requirements you have are met, we ask that all patrons who use a wheelchair or have specific seating or access requests contact the Box Office direct. For this reason wheelchair spaces and disabled concessions are not available through online booking.
