Holy, another month has ripped by and what a busy one too! The car show season was about to kick off with a huge rush but that has suddenly come to a grinding halt. Admittedly I had to do a quick re-write of this, just now actually! So with everyone back into their sheds for the past couple of weeks and some for a bit longer, I’m looking forward to seeing some new projects hitting the road when we are all set free again. Well, that’s the wish anyway. It’s always hit and miss getting projects completed on time even in normal times, but you have to find the silver lining in it all somewhere I reckon. So last month was all around the North Island again for me.
Grabbing feature car photos to bring to you and catching up with the Kruzin Kustoms team with their Open Day after the Palmy Swap Meet. That was a huge day with a massive turn out at both events. I managed to drag a few cool cars out of their sheds for a photoshoot as well, so watch this space to check those out. As for this magazine here, thanks soooo much to the people who have subscribed to this and who have subscribed on our Youtube channel as well. The more subscribers we get the more we can grow it for you, so please keep sharing it around and getting it in front of your mates. In this month’s issue, we have a massive coverage of the Palmy Swap Meet just gone and also the BIG ONE! Muscle Car Madness – the weekend!. OMG it’s huge! There is around 4 hours of video coverage just for this event!
The weekend is when it really goes off here with a shows n’ shine, retro pageant and burnouts. So make sure you check this article out and definitely check out the video. Just click on the video icons throughout the article, sit back and enjoy. There is also a couple of very cool feature cars in here too. A very BAD EH and a DODGEE Charger. Both awesome builds in their own right! So check those out along with the video’s as well. So cheers all, kick back, check out the photos, watch the videos and definitely spread the word that this is what we are! We LOVE cool cars!

Paul & Adele Collins’
DODGEE 1966 CHARGER
When you hear the word “Charger” visions of an orange screaming V8 American car flying through the air instantly jump into your mind, but this cool car was cool even before them Duke boys trashed a Charger or two. Paul had a vision in his head that he wanted this Charger to reflect the early NASCAR racing era with that staunch look of solid black wheels, big tyres
and the traditional big white lettering. The silver framed Hemi Orange stripes along the side highlighting the manufacturers graphic and all done in a matte-like finish to give that non imposing “we’re here to go, not for show” look. He certainly achieved that with this staunch looking build. The reverse scoop on the bonnet grabbing air to shove down the fourbarrel carb on that 383 Big Block Hemi fully taking on the race aspect of these early Chargers. These Chargers are certainly in a league of their own. The Dodge builds of the day taking on every challenge to have a super cool car with sleek lines and room under the guards for big wheels feeding the horse power from them technically
awesome Hemi engines to the ground. Then back it all up with a very classy interior to give them a sophisticated appearance but still filling the classy black and chrome dash with gauges to let you know that when you sit in that driver’s seat and take hold of the steering wheel, there is something exciting going to happen when you stomp on that gas-pedal. Dodge only built around thirty-five thousand of these so you can imagine there won’t be too many cruising the streets these days. Paul found this one in Masterton living in a shed and being a factory Big Block with a four speed gear box bolted to it, it was a must to have! He soon got a plan together to make this
Dodge his own. The dash was sent off to Canada for a rebuild and a luminescent gauge cluster fitted, which looks stunning by the way! New carpet, hood lining and trims were sourced and fitted to bring the tired looking interior back up to the standard of the awesome factory look. The body being originally silver was stripped and detailed to reflect the NASCAR styling and that Big Block 383 and four speed box were given a few performance treats as well. Knowing that the braking systems of the day weren’t exactly built to stop these things in a hurry, a set of larger Wilwood rotors and callipers were bolted
in up front and of course the suspension lowered and reset to make it go around New Zealand corners, along with giving it that cool race car stance. Like pretty much every muscle car or hot rod built, there is always something to test you out. We call it “Teething”, somehow that’s supposed to make us feel better when mysterious things just happen and we end up sitting on the side of the road. The personalised plate “DODGEE” reflects the first few runs, but on all accounts, this cool looking Muscle Car from 1966 still puts a smile on Paul and Adele’s face when it starts up with that awesome rumble of a big block Hemi!

Q&A: So how long have you owned the car Paul? 8 years Where did you find it? Masterton - It was a barn find. Someone had been living in it, cool story, he saw the car at the Beach Hop and came to let me know all about its history and why. He needed to help out some family so gave them his house and lived in his shed in the car, the back of these fold flat so plenty of room. What made you pick this car? I was looking for a 69 like everyone else, found this 66 and thought it would be cool to be different, they only made 35000 so getting hard to find especially as a big block 4 speed plus pedigree as the forefather to all chargers How long was the build time? 2 years first build then 12 months for a “Re-do” What condition was it in when you got it? Basket case, not too rusty just neglected. What would be your favourite car to have? 1977 SS Torans A9X What car would you like to test drive? Bogans Black Falcon (crack up, so do I)
Any other cool cars in the shed? 2008 Dodge Charger Super Bee, 1 of 1000 made What other cool cars have you owned? To many to list, Torana Hatchbacks, Commodores, Monaro’s, Aussie chargers, Mustang, Valiant’s even a couple of Falcons Any you wish you still owned? I had a factory 360 Aussie Charger and a cool ZC Fairlaine, wish I had kept them, but mostly an orange and black SS Torana Hatch I owned about 10 years ago What cars are on the wish list? A9X Favourite style of car ie. Coupe or Wagon etc? Coupes and getting into American trucks as well now. What do you love about the car scene the most? The people, genuine car people that like cars not just makes. Favourite car movie? The original Fast and Furious What’s on the stereo right now? Eagles Favourite band / singer to go cruising with on the stereo? Bon Jovi Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car? KSV Panel and Paint and Buckridge Panel and paint, Anthony was instrumental in the colour choices and he got what I was looking for in trying to get a theme without over doing it. I wanted a tribute to Nascar, Dukes of Hazard and Fast and Furious. Also a big thanks to Ross at R and M motor trimmers for sorting the interior.

The famous
PALMY SWAP MEET 50 YEARS OF COOL CARS AND SWAPPING Yep, 50 years this awesome event has been happening now and it’s definitely on the “to do list” of many a hot rod owner.
It all kicks off before sunrise with the streets leading into the Manfeild Park Stadium filling with traders waiting to get in and the show cars sneaking in the side gate to enter the hall and set up inside.
The Palmerston North Hot Rod Club hold this event every year on the first Saturday of August with the main hall opened up for traders around the perimeter and the centre filled with hot rods and classic cars making for an awesome display to wander around.
Outside the hall around two hundred traders set up with all sorts of automania in the swap meet area.
It is pretty awesome that the club can boast that they still have some of the original members from fifty years ago still helping to run the event. You can imagine there will be some good stories in there!
As you can imagine after this many years, they have got it pretty organised now so everything flows pretty quick when the gates open.
Unlike most meets this event is only for auto parts and associated goodies for the cave, so apart from the compulsory coffee truck to warm the cockles its pretty cool to wander about and see what goodies people have had hidden away. It always cracks me up as to what and how many spare parts most of us have on our parts shelves. Ive always said if
we all got together we could probably build another car or two just off our parts shelves. These sorts of swap meets are awesome for clearing that space, finishing a project or just restocking that space! As we do! Haha Right next to the swap meet area is the parking for the spill over of cool hot rods, muscle cars and pretty much anything cool on wheels to roll in. I fully couldn’t count how many cars where in here but it was rows and rows of cool as automobiles to wander around. Being such an iconic event now, people travel from far and wide to get along to this so it really is a full-on car show with a swap meet attached now. The adventure doesn’t just stop there either. After midday when everyone has had a chance to collect some goodies, catch up with mates and check out somewhere around seven hundred cars
on display, the Manfeild race track is opened up for exhibitors to get out on the track and have some quiet almost contained fun and the chance to see how their machine compares to others in that situation. Just quietly of course and totally under control! It certainly is a full-on action-packed day to get it all in. Kruzin Kustoms also have their open day in the afternoon. This is an awesome chance to get in and check out what the crew there do and a rare chance to climb under and over their builds to actually see what awesome work they do. So with all this happening on the same day in the same town, it is no wonder that people come from far and wide to get amongst it all. Full credit to Palmerston North Hot Rod Club for keeping this awesome event going with all the logistics involved now. I can certainly see the passion and enthusiasm within the club keeping this iconic event hanging around for another fifty years if possible. It is definitely one to get the diary and make the effort to get along to. It’s an Awesome day out!

Allan & Anita Norris’
BAD EH
Now doesn’t this take you back a fair few years, looking at a Street Machine magazine, thinking OMG that’s cool, AND it still is!! That’s pretty much the same thought that went through Allan’s mind when this creation started to evolve in his head. Already owning a left hook, very cool Camaro, Allan just wasn’t comfy with what he was cruising in and knew that he had to own a fat looking Street Machine with huge tyres and a huge blower poking through the bonnet that just screamed Aussie Muscle! So blocking all the grief from his mates out of his mind, about selling the now rare collectable
Camaro, this little ole EH started the journey to becoming the staunch Muscle Car you see here. There’s no doubt by these photos that Allan knocked that goal out of the garage! You would be hard pressed to find an item in this very cool custom build that hasn’t been modified and customised somehow. This isn’t just a show piece either, everything about this build is to have this staunch looking street machine cruising the streets putting smiles on bystanders faces and definitely Allan’s!
Muscle Car Madness in Rangiora (South Island), the very same week as being finished eighteen years ago, the EH has clocked up around twenty-eight thousand kilometres. It’s no slouch either, running a strip time of 10.6 seconds on the quarter mile while still wearing mufflers and in street trim. It ‘s honestly amazing to see this build still looking as stunning as the day it was finished. Allan’s prep work, before the final colour was sprayed on, certainly shows his skills and determination to have the super cool car he has.
It is hard to believe when crawling under and over this car that most of this was built around eighteen years ago. The body and paint work is still stunningly smooth and straight and this doesn’t just sit in the shed either! Since being finished and driven from Auckland to
This could easily be regarded as a straight-out drag car with that huge blower in the air. But upon looking inside to see the full leather interior wrapped around the roll cage and the extra dickie seat custom built to sit between the huge wheel tubs in the back, you can see there

is a lot more to it than just the strip. Allan’s goal to be able to cruise it on the streets was fully thought through with a massive one metre wide radiator slotted in up front with electric fans to keep the 355ci Chevy happy while idling around. The space framed front end also allowing heaps of room for working on the engine plus allowing the hot air to disperse easily away from that grumbly ole V8. Underneath the car is just as stunning as the rest. The chassis and undercarriage are colour coded to match the body. Massive stainless steel exhaust tubes and mufflers run straight through under the 9” diff to dump out the back. The boot area is also dressed up to match the interior with leather lined inserts around the fuel cell and battery box. It’s easy to see that Octane runs through both Allan’s and Anita’s veins. There’s a cool collection of collectables and customs in the shed along with an impressive history of what’s been in the shed too. But this creation is definitely here to stay! The goal of a building a very staunch driveable blown street machine was certainly nailed here, winning various car shows and clocking up miles of smiles on both Allan’s and Anita’s faces, you can tell it’s there to stay! Very very impressive build!
Q&A: So how long have you owned the car? I’ve owned this EH Holden for 26 years. l found the car in the trade and exchange for sale, was a bare rolling shell in Papatoe. I have always loved the EH Holden. My all time favourite car would still have to be blown 57 Chev What car would you like to test drive? GT HO Falcon Any other cool cars in the shed? l have a V8 MK2 Cortina and a VL Commodore What other cool cars have you owned? 2 x 57 Chevs, 2 x XR Falcons, 32 Ford coop, 57 Ford, 69 Monaro, 67 RS SS Camaro and plenty more, too many to remember really Any you wish you still owned? Yep, all of them What cars are on the wish list? None at the moment Favourite style of car? I like any shape of car What do you love about the car scene the most? Home built cars Favourite car movie? Running on empty What’s on the stereo right now? Greatest Rock n’ Roll Hits Favourite band / singer to go cruising with on the stereo? Rag n’ Bone How long was the build time? It took about 3.5 years first time, then drove it for 18 months before stripping it down again to spend another 3 years painting it What condition was it in when you got it? Bare shell but the shell was in good order Anyone you want to thank for helping with the car? Yep - Carl (Hollywood) Johnson, Terry at Terry’s Chassis Shop, Tony Dawson, Craig Hunter, Stitches Upholstery, C&M performance, Papakura Engine Specialist, Gegor, Clint at Green Park Panel and Paint and not forgetting my wife Anita Norris for cleaning the wheels Anything else you would like to add? Car was finished in 2004 and was driven to Muscle Car Madness in Christchurch where it won Top 10 and the People’s Choice. The car has since clocked up 28,000 miles since then. My biggest goal was to build a car that would make it into the Street Machine magazine and it did. This car has given us years of great times and memories, always gives people a smile when we drive by in it

MUSCLE CAR TRILLO METALS
MADNESS 2021 31 Full-on Years of Madness Welcome back to Part 2 of our coverage of this awesome event! It is no wonder this has been going for thirty-one years now, it’s such an awesome extended weekend! From cruising to show n’ shines, then onto retro fashion pageants and burnouts! Now if all that doesn’t keep you busy enough, there are live bands, trade stalls, kids rides, heaps of food venders and all sorts of goodies for sale to dress up the cave and wander around checking out! Saturday is the big day here when everything cranks up around ten notches and fully gets rocking! The gates of the Rangiora Domain open for the public to roll on in and check out all the cars on show in the centre arena plus all the
other entertainment that’s going on. At a guess there would be around thirteen hundred cars to wander around so it’s a big day just for the show n’ shine itself. Live bands are cranking away on the main stage until around midday when the retro rockabilly pageant starts. This is such a growing attraction at car shows now with heaps of entrants. This year they covered all sorts of categories from kids to teens then the men and ladies stepping out onto the catwalk in full retro attire just like the good ole rock n’ roll days. Straight after this is the bogans turn for full-on V8 screaming entertainment! The gate to the burnout pad gets swung open and she’s all go! You know it’s going to be good when you see the huge crowd surrounding the pad fence right to the top of the banks and then onto the top
of trucks and trees! Another live band is playing to entertain the waiting crowd before it all goes silent apart from the murmur of the crowd. The grumbling sound of open headers on a lumpy blown V8 breaks that sound and the cheers now start as the first car rolls through the gate and onto the pad. From here on in it’s screaming V8’s, blown tyres, massive smoke plumes and loud as cheering from the crowd as each contender vies for the Burnout Champion trophy of Muscle Car Madness. There were a fair-few contenders for this again this year too so the afternoon soon flew past pretty quick at the pad with all this entertainment going on. Back into the showgrounds, black from tyre smoke, it was all go with everyone starting to cruise the perimeter track again and resume the party that Muscle
Car Madness is. Live bands were back setting up in the main hall for the nights entertainment with Jordon Luck head lining the night. Outside the hall a fullon fire breathing and stunt show gave you something ‘not to try at home’ but certainly impressed you enough to think about it! Saturday nights the big night in the hall with the party heading into the small hours of the morning. Sunday morning always rolls around too quick but the entertainment is back on again. For some it’s pack-up day and head off home but for the stayers, it’s back to the burnout pad for the finals to see who gets that coveted trophy and prize money. The perimeter track is still cruising although slimming out as people head off but it is still an awesome day to be there. Prize giving in the main hall is later on Sunday afternoon with everyone just chilling out after a massive four days of partying, catchup with mates and making new ones. This is such a cool family event this. The simple rule is “don’t be a dick, and you’ll be all good” and that’s pretty much how it rolls. It is such a relaxed yet full-on event. As soon as you arrive you just want to kick your shoes off, relax and get amongst it! It certainly isn’t for the faint hearted, but true car people and bogans aren’t anyway! Craig, Marty and the crew there do a massive job putting all this together and it runs smooth as with so much going on. It is definitely an event you need to get along to at least once - but like me, once just isn’t enough once you’ve been. So get it in your diary for 20-24th January 2022 and get amongst!
