GUACAMAYOS FESTEJO

The macaw (guacamayo), known for its incredible colours, boasts beauty and a majestic flight. Its natural habitat spans from México to Perú, although the place where it lives mostly coincides with the basin of the Amazon. With this grain of sand, we wish to raise awareness among all human beings in protection and admiration towards them. El Guacamayo, conocido por sus increíbles colores, presume de una belleza y vuelo majestuoso. Su hábitat natural comprende desde México hasta Perú, aunque el lugar en el que se concentra la mayor parte coincide con la cuenca del amazonas. Con este granito de arena, deseamos concienciar al ser humano en la protección y la admiración hacia ellos.

ZAMACUECA COJA Chan Chan (Trujillo, Perú) is the largest adobe city in the world. I visited this city when I was a child. When I entered it, a strange effect took hold of me. I felt that I lost the perception of knowing when I was inside and when I was out! In my eyes, Chan Chan became an immense maze, one which, perhaps, I never left. With Moche I try to bring you the feelings that I lived in those moments and even, sometimes, still experience. Cote Chan Chan (Trujillo, Perú) es la ciudad de adobe más grande del mundo. Visité esta ciudad cuando aún era un niño. Al adentrarme en ella, un extraño efecto se apoderó de mí, ¡sentí que perdí la percepción de saber cuándo estaba dentro y cuando estaba fuera! Desde mis ojos, Chan Chan se convirtió en un inmenso laberinto, del que quizás nunca volví a salir. Con Moche intento traeros esas sensaciones que viví en esos momentos, y aún a veces sigo viviendo. Shipiba is an arrangement of an ícaro (shamanic song) of the shipiba Elisa Vargas. The shipibos/as are healers of the Peruvian jungle who help many people heal their fears, traumas, addictions and other problems using their ancestral medicine. With this musical arrangement, we want to thank all shipibos/as and shamans of the world, and especially Elisa Vargas for always taking care of the PACHAMAMA and its inhabitants. Shipiba es un arreglo de un ícaro (canto shamánico) de la shipiba Elisa Vargas. Los shipibos son curanderos de la selva peruana que con su medicina ancestral ayudan a mucha gente a sanar sus miedos, traumas, adicciones y otros problemas. Con este arreglo musical, agradecemos a todos los shipibos/as y shamanes del mundo, y en especial a Elisa Vargas por siempre cuidar de la PACHAMAMA y de sus habitantes.

Although Foli is not based on a Peruvian rhythm, it is a composition that mixes everything I have lived, learned and studied. Tearing off small pieces of my experiences in Perú, Brazil, Ireland and Spain, where I have lived the past years of my life. Foli shows how the teachings and experiences of these recent years have been transformed into sound. A pesar de que Foli no está basado en ningún ritmo peruano, es una composición que mezcla todo lo que he vivido, aprendido y estudiado. Arrancando pequeños retazos de mis vivencias en Perú, Brasil, Irlanda y España, donde he vivido los últimos años de mi vida, Foli cuenta cómo los aprendizajes y las vivencias en estos últimos años se van transformando en sonido.

CUMBIA PSICODÉLICA Manu is the park and national reserve of the Peruvian jungle, a paradise blessed with the largest biodiversity in the world. One can ride a bike at 4,280 meters above sea level and descend down into the jungle. The Peruvian jungle not only hides mind-blowing landscapes but also a psychedelic cumbia that will make you dance till dawn. This theme is a veneration to the Peruvian jungle and a tribute to Juaneco y su Combo.

Manu es el parque y reserva nacional de la selva peruana, paraíso bendecido con la mayor biodiversidad del mundo. Uno puede pasear en bicicleta a 4.280 metros sobre el nivel del mar bajando hasta la selva. La selva peruana no solo esconde unos paisajes increíbles sino también una cumbia psicodélica que te hará bailar hasta el amanecer. Este tema es una veneración a la selva peruana y un homenaje a Juaneco y su Combo.

PHISQA: a new language in jazz “A trip” is how its creator, Cote Calmet, defines this project. ‘Phisqa’ (‘five’ in Quechua, the native language of Peru) is a word chosen to inspire our five senses as human beings. PHISQA is also the staging of a new way of merging the rich texture of Afro-Peruvian, Andean and Amazonian rhythms with the elegance, spontaneity, freedom and virtuosity of the jazz language. Formed in the city of Dublin (Ireland) in 2010, PHISQA escapes the traditional way in which Peruvian rhythms have been fused with jazz. In this regard, Calmet – composer, conductor and drummer of the group – explains: “First of all I tried to approach Peruvian music, trying to use another method of playing it with jazz. I used a lot of the concepts of opening the solos of the themes, as well as having more architectural structures. I have also avoided having a cajón or other type of native percussion next to the drums, so I passed all those rhythms to my instrument. PHISQA explores the wealth of Afro-Peruvian, Andean and Amazonian music but with jazz instruments: soprano and tenor sax, trumpet, guitar, drums and double bass. That way we can move from a totally Peruvian rhythm to the newest in contemporary jazz and fusion.” Those who have been lucky enough to hear and see PHISQA live have said that it is a “music that invites you to move”. Because of its energy, it is like a force that captures and takes listeners’ imagination to territories that perhaps their senses have never explored. After a long pause, PHISQA was reborn in 2018 in Granada (Spain), refreshing itself with a new format, new compositions, arrangements and new Andalusian members (from Cádiz and Granada). Now with a three-strong wind section in the band, their music sounds even more energetic than when they started. PHISQA takes off again with more force than ever!

PHISQA: Un nuevo lenguaje en el jazz “Un viaje”. Así es como su creador, Cote Calmet, define este proyecto. “Phisqa” (“cinco” en quechua, lengua nativa del Perú) es la palabra elegida por inspirar nuestros cinco sentidos como seres humanos. PHISQA también es la puesta en escena de una nueva forma de fusionar la rica textura de los ritmos afro-peruanos, andinos y amazónicos con la elegancia, espontaneidad, libertad y virtuosismo propios del lenguaje jazz. Formado en la ciudad de Dublín, Irlanda, en el año 2010, PHISQA escapa a la manera tradicional en que hasta la fecha se han fusionado los ritmos del Perú con el jazz. Al respecto, Calmet –compositor, director y baterista del grupo– explica: “En primer lugar he intentado abordar la música peruana tratando de usar otro método de tocarla con el jazz. He utilizado mucho los conceptos de abrir los solos de los temas, así como de tener estructuras más arquitectónicas. Asimismo, he evitado tener un cajón u otro tipo de percusión nativa al lado de la batería, por lo que pasé todos esos ritmos a mi instrumento. Phisqa explora la riqueza de la música afro, peruana, andina y amazónica pero con instrumentos propios del jazz: saxo soprano y tenor, trompeta, guitarra, batería y contrabajo. De esa manera podemos movernos de un ritmo totalmente peruano a lo más nuevo del jazz contemporáneo y la fusión.” Quienes han tenido la suerte de escuchar y ver a PHISQA expresan que es “música que invita a moverte”. Por su energía es como una fuerza que atrapa y lleva la imaginación de los oyentes a territorios que quizá sus sentidos jamás han explorado. Tras una larga pausa, PHISQA renace en 2018 en Granada (España) refrescándose con nuevo formato, nuevas composiciones, arreglos y nuevos integrantes andaluces (Cádiz, Granada). Al contar ahora con una sección de tres vientos en la banda, su música suena aún más enérgica que en los inicios. ¡PHISQA despega de nuevo con más fuerza que nunca!
