na palabra relativamente poco habitual para una forma muy familiar; el arco conopial se describe como un arco que parece la sección cruzada de una cebolla. También se le conoce como arco quilla, debido a su similitud con la quilla de un barco. Se encuentran ejemplos de arcos conopiales en muchos países, sobre todo en la arquitectura histórica rusa. Los palacios y las iglesias rusas proporcionan la indicación más clara del amor que este país siente por el arco conopial, donde también se le conoce como “Kokoshnik”, que era un tipo de tocado antiguo con curvas similares. Existe incluso un término arquitectónico denominado el “Kokoshnik ruso” (estilo tienda), que se refiere a una característica arquitectónica circular, que se levanta a un punto que disminuye y está enmarcada por molduras decorativas que a menudo incluyen arcos conopiales. xamples of ogee are prevalent in many countries, particularly in Russian historical architecture. Russia’s palaces and churches provide the clearest indication of the country’s love affair with the ogee – where it is also known as a “Kokoshnik” which is a type of ancient headdress with similar curves. There is even an architectural term called the “Russian Kokoshnik” (tent style), which refers to a circular architectural feature, rising to a diminishing point and framed by decorative mouldings which often includes ogee arcs. This Byzantine type structure first became popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, producing buildings such as St. Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square,
Moscow. Another prime example is the Transfiguration Church (Preobrazheniya) constructed for the Russian royal family in the sixteenth century, featuring a decorative tent shaped tower, adorned with a riot of copulas, ogee arches and gables. However, one of the most impressive examples of the ogee (kokoshnik) is the wooden summer palace built in 1668 by Semen Petrov and Ivan Mikhailov for Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In its time, the
palace was said to be considered the “eighth wonder of the world”, bursting with “Kokoshniks”, ogee shaped roofs, cupolas, towers and globes. Unfortunately, the original building is no longer standing, but it’s possible to get an idea of its impressive architectural lines from a replica model at Kolomenskoye, a former royal estate located near Moscow. Whether it’s an “ogee” or “kokoshnik” Russian architecture is all the richer for the inclusion of these incredible decorative arches.

Nuestro objetivo es hacerte llegar, en cada número, algo nuevo en relación con el diseño de interiores. E91 ha buscado las gemas ocultas menos obvias, conocidas sólo por grupos limitados como los diseñadores especializados y los propietarios de yates de lujo. Por eso hemos invitado a Carol Scanu, de Scanu Studios, una de las diseñadoras con más recursos cuando se trata del interior de un barco, para que comparta su trabajo con nuestra audiencia en España.
El estudio Scanu fija los estándares omo propietaria de Scanu, galardonada empresa del diseño de yates con base en Viareggio, Italia, Carol Scanu se especializa en crear renovaciones extremas de todo tipo de barcos, desde planificaciones nuevas a diseños de renovación de lujo de acuerdo con los requisitos y gustos más exigentes. Originaria de Estados Unidos, Carol trabajó con su difunto esposo, Paolo, arquitecto y diseñador naval. Hace diez años, su hijo Matteo se unió a la empresa familiar. Actualmente, cuenta con unos impresionantes 33 años de experiencia, en cinco continentes y trabaja actualmente en su proyecto 348. Carol trabaja en yates a vela y con motor, entre los 27 y los 150 metros de eslora. Sus habilidades cubren la gestión del proyecto, diseño exterior, diseño interior y estilo, para los navíos de alta gama de su portafolio como el New Sunrise, Georgia y África. A diferencia del diseño de un edificio, donde las únicas restricciones son el gusto personal, estilo de
vida, presupuesto y espacio, un yate no tiene cuatro paredes. Aparte de su forma, existen consideraciones adicionales; como el hecho de que es un barco con numerosas regulaciones y códigos que deben tenerse en cuenta. Carol, quien siempre disfruta del desafío, dice: “Estos proyectos nos permiten una elección liberal de materiales, telas y accesorios desde las maderas más sencillas a las chapas más exóticas, desde las líneas limpias del minimalismo a la boiserie más compleja, con tallados e insertos. “Siempre nos centramos en la función del yate, evitando por tanto las esquinas afiladas, proporcionando zonas donde sujetarse”. That’s why we invited Carol Scanu of Scanu Studios – one of the most resourceful designers when it comes to the interior of a boat – to share her works with our audience in Spain.

Originally from the USA, Carol worked alongside her late husband Paolo, a naval architect and designer, 10 years ago her son Matteo joined the family firm. Today she has clocked up an impressive 33 years’ experience, spanning 5 continents and is currently working on project number 348.
Clearly enjoying the challenge, Carol says, “These projects allow us a liberal choice in materials, fabrics and accessories from the humblest of woods to exotic veneers, from the clean stark lines of minimalism to the most complex boiserie with carvings and inlays.
In charge of interior design on sail and motor yachts measuring between 27 to 150 metres, Carol’s skills cover project management, exterior design, interior design and styling, counting high profile vessels such as New Sunrise, Georgia and Africa in her portfolio.

Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living Show l Palacio de Congresos de Estepona acogió por séptimo año la Exhibición Home, Gardens and Outdoor Living, demostrando de nuevo la popularidad de la que disfrutan las mejoras del hogar, el diseño de interiores y la jardinería en la Costa del Sol. Por petición popular se presentó la famosa jardinera de la televisión de Reino Unido, Charlie Dimmock, para animar la exhibición, ofrecer consejos de jardinería y firmar autógrafos. Clodagh y Dick Hanscombe, con 25 años de experiencia en jardinería en España añadieron experiencia y firmaron copias del nuevo libro de Dick, “Basic guidelines for a garden”. Los stands estuvieron formados por una buena mezcla de empresas locales, incluyendo periódicos, bancos, empresas de comunicación, belleza, terapias naturales y por supuesto inmobiliarias y empresas de horticultura. stepona’s Palacio de Congresos played host for the seventh year to the Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living Show – yet again proving the popularity of home improvement, interior design and gardening on the Costa del Sol. Back by popular demand, UK TV’s celebrity gardener Charlie Dimmock was present to liven up the proceedings, offering gardening tips and signing autographs. Clodagh and Dick Handscombe, with 25 years’ experience of gardening in Spain added some local expertise and signed copies of Dick’s new book “Basic guidelines for a garden”. Stands were taken by a good mix of local businesses including newspapers, banks, communication, beauty, natural therapy and of course property and horticultural companies. Estomar91, first time exhibitor, took a large stand showcasing high quality wrought iron patio furniture, designed by E91 and produced in Italy - perfect for the southern Spanish climate. It also provided an opportunity to meet the public and to introduce “Ogee” by offering a copy of the magazine to all attendees.
