The long-expected legislation conceding non-EU nationals’ automatic Spanish residency if they invest in Spanish economy or property is now approved. Our cover photo features astonishing work from leading Italian furniture maker, Vittorio Grifoni. One of Madrid’s busiest and most popular architects, Joaquín Torres tells us about his design philosophy, while Ismael Mérida very kindly opened up his stylish Marbella home to the Ogee team. Our interior designer shares tips on how to make the garden attractive after sunset. Have you heard that a Russian Orthodox Church is
to be built in Marbella? We spoke to Father Dmitry and the project architect about this venture, which of course is immensely important for the Costa de Sol’s growing Russian community. In real estate, appearances mean a lot. What better way to set your home apart than to make it attractive at first glance? Paint the interior in light brown tone (never white), and paint every room the same colour. Ceilings can be painted the same colour, but will really stand out if they are a lighter colour than the colour of the walls. Lighter colours also make the ceilings appear higher. Aesthetics are important, but it’s also important that doors, appliances and electrical and plumbing features be in working order. The kitchen is the most important room in the house; it’s the heart and soul of the home. Even if a buyer is not much of a cook, the kitchen is still where family and friends tend to gather. Examine knobs and / or pulls for the cabinet doors. New hardware will transform the appearance of your cabinets. Polish or replace the granite work top. Keep the home in move-in condition and give potential buyers the impression that they will be able to move right in and start enjoying their new home, rather than spending time and money fixing it up. Last but not least – Let the sun shine in. People like to see a house full of air and light. Always keep curtains opened when showing your home to a potential buyer.

I try to give as much of myself in each project optimizing function and form. Sculptural forms always seduce me.
Alejandro Sanz, Elsa Pataky, Penelope Cruz, Raul, Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo and our fellow compatriot Fernando Hierro, are some of the celebrities who have entrusted Joaquin with their home design. With a career of 17 years and with offices in Madrid, La Coruña and Dubai, their studio has become a reference for all luxury lovers. You have published your first book “Behind the door” and an interior design magazine. What project would you like to do now? Consolidate all that I have, which is a lot and very good.... and especially the internationalization of the studio. Do you think architects should build only considering the wishes of their clients or on the contrary, should also consider the needs of society in the medium and long term?
An architect must contribute their know-how and professionalism to the customer’s wishes .... and give a formal and functional solution taking into account of course, the needs of society. What advice would you give architects who are beginning to have a successful career like yours? I am not known to give advice because what is valid for one person is not for another.... but my very proactive profile has always been very helpful … What kind of architects do you hire? Professionals with enthusiasm and with the ambition to be the best. You mix formality and functionality without neglecting the forms, is your motivation based more on invention or would you rather achieve social results? I do not think those two subjects are incompatible…
You are attributed with the ability to “give soul to the houses,” how would you define your style? I´m not sure if you can or should talk about style .... I just try to give as much of myself as I can in every project optimizing function and form and knowing that sculptural forms always seduce me. Is our home a reflection of ourselves? Without a doubt…. at the end our home describes how we are. How do you see the current position of the architect in society? We have been losing the prestige that we had and our level of self-criticism is non-existent. And finally, can you tell us about any projects you have done in the Costa del Sol? We´ve built residences, semi-detached houses, terraced villas and luxury homes.

Каким проектом тебе хотелось бы заниматься сейчас? Собрать весь опыт, который у меня есть…. а его много и он очень полезный и, особенно, процесс интернационализации студии. Как ты считаешь, архитекторы должны строить, основываясь только на пожеланиях заказчика, или наоборот, учитывать потребности общества в среднесрочной и долгосрочной перспективе? Архитектор должен подчинить свой профессионализм и свое ноу-хау пожеланиям
заказчика… принять решение одновременно формальное и функциональное, учитывая и потребности общества. Какой бы совет ты дал начинающим архитекторам, чтобы их карьера сложилась также успешно, как у тебя? Я не склонен давать советы, поскольку то, что для одного хорошо, для другого неприемлемо… но для меня быть проактивным было очень полезно... Каких архитекторов ты приглашаешь на работу? Профессионалов, умеющих мечтать и желающих стать лучшими. Ты смешиваешь формальность и функциональность, не пренебрегая внешними формами. Тебя больше мотивирует процесс создания или достижение общественного эффекта? Думаю, что одно может сочетаться с другим...
Известно о твоей способности “одушевлять дома” , как бы ты определил свой стиль? Не знаю можно ли или нужно ли говорить о стиле… в каждом проекте я стараюсь вложить максимум себя, оптимально сочетая функцию и форму, и, как правило, меня привлекают скульптурные формы. Наш дом это отражение нас самих? Без всякого сомнения… В конечном счете наш дом нас характеризует. Какое место занимает архитектор в современном обществе? Мы продолжаем терять авторитет, который мы имели в обществе, и абсолютно отсутствует самокритика. И последний вопрос: можешь рассказать нам о каком-нибудь проекте, реализованном на Коста дель Соль? Мы построили домовладения, таунхаусы и жилье класса “люкс”.

With the arrival of winter season, the biggest concern for professionals in the field of garden maintenance, is how to maintain green lawns in the cold season. The grass plant is called Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), the predominant species on golf courses and gardens. This type of grass is used both for its high tolerance to use and trampling, it is fast growing, has a high tolerance to summer temperatures and excellent potential for recovery. However, the Bermuda stops growing below 13 º C and begins the process of hibernation when the temperature is lower, which is when yellow leaves appear, especially in shady areas. There is a practice called autumn”reseeding” that involves the installation of additional grass on the original lawn. This additional layer completes its growth cycle in spring and there is a transition to the original grass that restarts its activity in the presence of higher temperatures. The most commonly used variety of seeds used for reseeding are the Ray grass (annual or perennial) Poa (Trivialis or Pratensis). These types of lawns are fast growing and easy to maintain. My advice is to see a professional for the transition and for reseeding in the spring, to make it as quick and effective as possible. I hope this short article will be helpful for those who want to have a green lawn all year round, and i am available for any help or advice needed.

Однако бермудская трава перестает расти при минус 13ºC. Когда температура опускается ниже, у травы начинается процесс спячки, и в это время она может пожелтеть, особенно на теневых участках газона.
Существует практика так называемого осеннего “подсева” - подсеивание дополнительных трав на уже существующий газон. Этот дополнительный слой заканчивает свой цикл роста весной и подменяет оригинальный газон, который снова активируется, когда становится теплее. Для подсева чаще используются семена Райграса (однолетние или многолетние), Мятлика (обыкновенный или луговой). Эти травы обеспечивает газону быстрый рост и неприхотливость в уходе. Мой совет: для максимально быстрого и эффективного результата нужно обратиться к специалисту для подсева осенью и для контроля весной. Religious buildings are an essential architectural element in most of the world and in Russia, temple architecture is even more significant. For many centuries most of the buildings in this country were built of wood, therefore, most of them have not survived to this day, only the most important churches were built of stone, so they are the only example of ancient Russian architecture. Russian palaces and churches clearly indicates the special preference given to ogee arches, also known as “Kokoshnik” which was a type of ancient headwear with similar curves. There is even an architectural term called the “Russian Kokoshnik” which refers to a round shape architectural feature. Kokoshnik gave its name to the decorative corbel arch that was a distinctive element of traditional Russian architecture. These structures first appeared in the 16th and 17th centuries, with buildings such as, the St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square. In the early eighteenth century, the famous Tsar Peter the Great introduced the standards of European culture and life style and during his reign, the Baroque influence became the country’s main architectural style. The best model of the Baroque era of Peter I, is the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul in St. Petersburg (built by the Italian Domenico Trezzini), which became one of the landmarks of the new Russian capital.

Лучшим примером стиля барокко эпохи Петра I является Петропавловский собор в Санкт-Петербурге (построен итальянским архитектором Доменико Трезини), который стал одной из достопримечательностей новой столицы России.

What does this biological definition mean to us? Buildings also have an envelope, acting as a protective barrier against weather conditions. Depending on geographical position, usually in architecture this “skin” performs an aesthetic function, but also protects the building from external influences. Marbella Town Hall has assigned a plot of 2,500 m2 for the construction of a Russian Orthodox Church and a cultural and social centre for the Orthodox Foundation, promoted by the Moscow Patriarchate, and managed by the archpriest Dmitry Osipenko. The plot is located in Nueva Andalucía (Azalea Beach) and will not be charged any fees. Last year, the town hall allocated the plot for the project, four months ago the first foundation stone was placed and the construction should commence by the end of this year. The mayoress, Angeles Muñoz, stated that the construction of the church, would encourage “full integration” of the Russian community in
the city, home to more than 1,200 registered Russians, and ensure close ties with Russia. The temple will be bestowed to the Russian Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Foundation estimates that the construction, valued approximately three million euros, will be completed in two years and that it will be primarily funded by private donations from the large Russian community in the Costa del Sol.

Based in Marbella, IGGA design studio exports architecture and urban planning services to a dozen countries on four continents. Will this be the largest Russian Orthodox Church in Spain? There is no other project like this in Spain. Existing two Russian Orthodox churches in Spain – wooden church in Altea (Alicante) and recently opened one in Madrid, both stand on plots of less than 1000 m2. However, the first to be built in Andalusia with the support of the Moscow Patriarchate will have a terrain two and half times larger than the others. Does this temple project have more art and monumental architecture than others you’ve made? Religious buildings and monuments like this one, respond to traditional architectural canons, with very strict demands in aesthetic and composition within the technical requirements of the design. Monumental architecture is a difficult discipline, due to more art than other architectural and historical disciplines that my studio is very familiar
with, as it is not the first monumental project we do. The latest project was in Cuba, at the Caribbean Sea, a reconditioned watchtower in a beautiful nineteenth-century sugar mill, with a social, historic and exceptional architectonic value. A project was agreed between the Monument Office and the Historic Sites of Cultural Heritage of Cuba. We would like to know more details about the construction.. The temple will be built according to the canons of the Russian Orthodox tradition, as seen in our recent drawings. As the project is not yet closed, it could still change. The present proposal includes the construction of a church with a cultural and social centre for the Orthodox community, a house for the priest who will attend to the church, rooms for catechism and meetings. For the most orthodox religious details, we have the support of Russian artists and technical architects. We are now adjusting the project details to urban conditions, such as the height of the domes and unique construction elements in these type of churches, that we have reduced to stay within the limit of 19,50 metres permitted for this plot.

The international furniture brand Roche Bobois Marbella, celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. Managed since 2008 by Gilles Bonan, the brand remains as the best ambassador of French furniture and design. We had the opportunity to speak with the president. How did the showroom in Marbella develop recently? At first, the shop in Marbella was ran as franchise by a couple who were very successful, but six years ago they decided to retire. We took over the shop with a total of 400 m2 of exhibition space, but over the years, we have acquired more space and now we have 1,200 m2 divided into three establishments. Who are the new designers working with you this season? We have worked frequently with Cédric Ragot, a great talent of French design. Also, we have
organized a competition with the design school and St. Martin College in London, to make a prototype design. We hope to do the same project in Spain.
We will open 15 new shops. So far, we have opened ten this year, and we will do the same in Singapore, Santo Domingo, Peru, etc. We have a very strong development project worldwide.
Your main customers in the Marbella are of Russian nationality. How about other countries? Also in Barcelona, London, Paris, NY, Switzerland, we have customers who love our furniture.
Advantages and disadvantages of being president of a large multinational? I am very lucky; I have the pleasure of working in a company with strong values on creativity, product quality, manufacturing, which is all done in Europe, working with designers, the international new openings and discover new cultures, I am very fortunate to work with Roche Bobois, there are only advantages in doing so.
You have two new collections, the contemporary and the classic. What style is the most requested? People are going for the fusion of styles. The total look is out. There are customers who are fans of the design, but mix them with other more classical pieces, to have a contrast style. The Spanish clients and those in Marbella are more contemporary. Roche Bobois has 250 shops in 45 countries, do you have any projects of new showroom in mind?
Are you an architect or designer or have notions of decoration? I do now, but did not study any of these professions. I’ve always liked decoration and working with many designers, they taught me their knowledge and enthusiasm.

Все это преимущества. Сотрудничество с Roche Boboi - большое счастье для меня. Ты по образованию архитектор, дизайнер или у тебя есть познания в этой области? Теперь есть, но я не из этого мира. Меня и раньше привлекало искусство дизайна, а после сотрудничества с таким количеством дизайнеров, мне передались их знания и увлеченность.

The commercial promanade at pier level is undoubtedly the most complex for its design, as it has more constraints and restrictions both physically and conceptually. The legthwise shape, limits in one end with the Palm trees of surprises, that permits in a simple and pleasant way to continue the walk from one area to another, while the other end of the walk, is extended to the Lamppost Square, directly connected to the edge of the town centre.

Если захочет, то да. Секрет состоит в том, чтобы использовать продукты лучшего качества и очень любить то, что ты делаешь, если Вы готовите с увлечением и любовью, то не может получиться плохо. Какое ваше самое популярное блюдо? Все блюда из мяса, которое мы привозим с севера Испании. Есть одно блюдо, которое чаще всего заказывают: с жареными перцами, морскими гребешками, тигровыми креветками. Оно подается в чесночнолимонном соусе и с муссом из морепродуктов. Какие ингредиенты ты считаешь главными для приготовления одного блюда? Самое главное - ингредиентов не должно быть
слишком много. Для одного блюда я всегда выбираю пять или шесть продуктов. Если их будет больше, то в конце концов теряется суть. Кстати, правда ли, что ваш русский салат не имеет ничего общего с нашим? Да, это так. В нашем салате только картофель и яйца. В меню его нет, но наши русские клиенты его заказывают. Испанская кухня очень богата. Что именно из этого гастрономического разнообразия ты выбрал для себя? Я выбираю мясо из северных районов Испании, паэлью из Валенсии, приготовленную на углях, супы из Астурии, а из Андалусии - поджарку из Малаги (рыба свежего улова во фритюре), холодный томатный суп “Сальморехо” и гаспачо… Но больше всего я люблю Марбелью за качество жизни, которое она нам предоставляет, и за возможность делать любимую работу. Есть ли у тебя специальное меню на Рождество? Да, 24 и 31 декабря мы готовим очень специальный ужин в приятной обстановке. Меню включает 4 перемены блюд и напитки. Зажигается камин, звучит живая музыка, создавая таким образом неповторимую атмосферу по очень доступным ценам.
How would you define your cuisine? It´s international, classical, Mediterranean due to the area and a little fusion, based on first quality basic products. Do you think that anyone can cook? If you want to yes, the secret is to use quality products with much loving care, if you put love and passion in your cooking, nothing can go wrong. Which is you main star dish? All types of meats from northern Spain, there is a dish which is highly requested, with roasted pepper, scallops, king prawns, accompanied with an emulsion sauce with garlic, lemon and sea foam. What are your most important ingredients for a dish? The first thing is not to use too many, I always work with five or six products per dish, if you have too many flavours, you eventually lose the essence. By the way, your russian salad has nothing to do with ours, does it? No, just the potatoes and eggs, we don´t have it on the menu, but many Russian clients ask for it. In Spain we have a rich cuisine, what corner of our diverse cuisine do you prefer? The meat in northern Spain, Valencian paella cooked over coals, the stews of Asturias and from this region, the deep fried range of regional fish, the salmorejo and a good home-made gazpacho... But mostly, I prefer Marbella for the quality of life we have and my job, which I adore. And for Christmas, do you do a special menu? Yes, for the 24th and 31st we prepare a very special dinner in beautiful surroundings, the menu has four dishes, we light up the fireplace, we have live music and the result is unique and at a very affordable price.

King prawns and scallops Тигровые креветки и морские гребешки Recipe by Chef Edmund Cicans Restaurante Guey Ingredients: King prawns. Scallops. Olive oil. Garlic. Lemon juice. Parsley. Chilli. Salt. Preparation: Fry the garlic and chilli. Add scallops and king prawns (the scallops must only be slightly fried so the are not overdone). Add lemon juice and parsley. Add a little water and butter. Make a bedding of red peppers and cover with the cooked seafood. Add sauce (mixture of oil, butter, lemon and hot water). Decorate with fresh herbs.

Sitting in the terrace with José Carlos García next to the pond surrounded by orange trees, the great monuments of the city take on a new perspective previously unknown to us all. The Cathedral, Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle cut by the extraordinary tree mass of the Málaga Park that turn into gold; the Mediterranean, a few metres away, releases strong orange colors, one can smell the sea and the countryside, the sunset arrives in the port of Málaga.
