aying goodbye to the current year in this cheery festive atmosphere, we have also waved farewell to the old look of our publication, giving it a totally new aesthetic presentation and fresh literary content. In this edition we continue, as always, to bring you the latest trends in architecture, design and art, not to mention design’s eternal classical values. Therefore, on the 30th anniversary of the Alhambra’s inclusion on the list of World Heritage sites

and the 20th of the Albaicin first appearing on the same roster, this edition features an article about Granada’s rightly famous architectural heritage. This forms the first of a series of articles about the finest examples of Spain’s cultural and historical heritage protected by UNESCO. Another first that you will find in the pages of this issue of Ogee is an article about the Ward Travel Award winning hotels, considered the Oscar of the hotel industry.

We hope that these features will give you plenty to read during the holidays as you relax in the warmth of your homes.

Он становится творческим императивом для многих современных дизайнеров, которые ищут суть красоты в простоте форм. Архитектор Котаро Хориучи (1978г.) окончил Токийский университет в 2002 году. Он довел эту стилизацию до апогея, создав оригинальную пещеру из белоснежной стекловолоконной бумаги. Монохромность листов овальной формы,

свисающих с наклонного потолка, создает ощущение укутанности в мелодии легкого бриза. Почти полное отсутствие мебели (исключение составляет очень длинный, изогнутый стол из искусственного мрамора с подсветкой) превращает пещеру в одно из многофункциональных и универсальных пространств, которое при необходимости может быть домом, офисом, баром или иметь любое другое назначение. Необычная инсталляция Котаро Хориучи является частью более крупного проекта “Fusionner” и представляет собой синтез искусства, архитектуры и дизайна. Она была создана на

50 кв.м офиса архитектора в Нагое с помощью студентов из Университета Шукутоку. Этот футуристический проект – великолепное исследование социологии и психологии пространства, изучающее отношения между человеком и окружающей средой. Несомненно, поэтика и эстетика этого уникального творения, удостоенного Японской Ассоциацией Дизайна (Japan Design Space Association) золотой награды в 2014 году, делают его подлинным архитектурным выражением поэзии хайку, которая пытается найти ответы в самом естестве природы и всего сущего.

ased on practicality and an austere aesthetic - and presented in a way that gives it a supreme elegance - it has influenced many contemporary designers seeking, in simplicity, the essence of beauty itself. The architect Kotaro Horiuchi, born in 1978 and a 2002 graduate from Tokyo University, has carried that theme to its limit, designing an original fibreglass cave of pristine whiteness: the monochrome oval side sheets hanging from the gable roof lend

an impression of living wrapped in the breezeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s melodies. The almost total absence of furniture - a very long and wavy artificial marble table with light is the sole representative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; makes the caves flexible and multi-purpose spaces that can serve as homes, offices, bars, or any other form of accommodation. This unusual Kotaro Horiuchi installation is part of a larger series called Fusionner. A synthesis of art, architecture and design in fifty square metres, made in the architectÂ´s Nagoya office with the

help of students from the University of Shukutoku, this futuristic project is a magnificent study of sociological and psychological space, exploring the relationship between man and the environment. Without any doubt the poetics and aesthetics of this unique creation, which was awarded a 2014 Gold Medal by the Japan Design Space Association, amounts to a genuine architectural translation of haiku, seeking the answers in the very essence of nature and all that exists.

Возможно, одна из самых любопытных работ студии - теплоэлектростанция в Технологическом парке Малаги, достойный внимания образец своеобразной чувственной философии “González & Jacobson”. ОМ: Эстетическое решение промышленного сооружения - сложная задача. Если исходить из вашего видения архитектуры, можете ли вы назвать отправную точку этого проекта? GJ: Мы отталкивались от участка земли, создавая с его помощью растительное покрытие, которое могло бы скрыть или смягчить тяжесть и агрессивность промышленной установки. Таким образом, в городской перспективе открывается вид на большой холм и волнообразный участок земли.

ОМ: ТЭC прекрасно вписывается в природный ландшафт. Как бы вы определили найденный вами компромисс с окружающей природой? GJ: Придумывая эту зеленую крышу, укрепленную армированными облицовочными панелями из переработанных материалов и отходов, мы хотели выразить все свое уважение к окружающей среде. GJ: Зеленое покрытие, видоизменяясь и приобретая разные формы, остается центром концепции. Таким образом, крыша объединяет разные здания в единый комплекс. GJ: Свет всегда был характерной особенностью Коста-дель-Соль. Совершенно очевидно, что это влияет на творческий процесс и отражается на конечном результате. Málaga’s CHP Power Plant Where Industrial Design Meets Beauty

Founded in Marbella in 1993, the González & Jacobson Architecture studio is the result of professional encounter between two prominent architects: Venezuelan Carlos Gonzalez Mora and Mexican Amieva Rodolfo Jacobson.

hese two creative forces decided to combine and complement their knowledge and work experience in order to develop ethical projects that encompass all areas and aspects of the profession. González & Jacobson has a wide variety of projects in its portfolio, including landscaping, luxury homes, commercial premises and industrial construction in countries on several continents. One of its most curious works perhaps is Cogeneration Power Plant in Technology Park in Málaga, a worthy example of the architects’ sensibilities and specific philosophies. OM: Granting an industrial plant physical attractiveness is a great challenge: can you tell us what your starting point was in this project? GJ: We created a green blanket from the ground to hide and soften the harsh image of an industrial plant with its strongly invasive component. Thus, through the urban perspective, we could

see a big hill, a natural undulation in the terrain. OM: The plant is perfectly integrated into the natural environment. How would you define your obvious commitment to the environment? GJ: With the inclusion of the green cover as a main element, we wanted to express our commitment to the environment and used reinforced cladding panels made from recycled and waste materials. OM: The plant is divided into different buildings and incorporates several phases. What techniques, aesthetic trends and materials have been used? GJ: The main focus of the concept is the green cover. This is developing, moving in different ways, always lingering as conceptual focus, thus the different buildings with their different uses are nonetheless part of the same set. OM: You have been living near the Mediterranean for decades. How far does this unique

location inspire you? Are you also influenced by the architectural heritage and trends of your respective home countries? GJ: The light is always a feature of the Costa del Sol, so obviously this affects the creative process and is reflected in the outcome of the projects. OM: Besides this one, which of your other works stands out as the most important? GJ: Luxury developments such as Guadalmansa Playa: Elviria Hills, Pueblo del Rio, La Trinidad, Samara, Altamira, Imara, Oasis de Banús in Marbella, and Royal Atlantic in Achakar, Tangier. OM: What are your plans for the immediate future? GJ: Despite having endured a few years of crisis in the sector, there seems to have been no let-up in the demand for new buildings. Also new markets looking for the type of architecture that we create have opened up, especially in Asia, Africa and Mexico.

самых первых известных образцов именно ковры наиболее полно отражали творческий потенциал и фантазию как кочевников, так и народов, ведущих оседлый образ жизни. Каждый народ использовал в рисунке ковра вдохновляющие его мотивы: повторяющиеся арабески, мифологические сюжеты и образы, превращающие ковры в настоящие произведения искусства, или райские сады, где во всем своем благолепии изображались экзотические цветы, соседствующие с разнообразной дикой фауной, а также сцены из народной жизни, как например: охота или другие бытовые сюжеты. Отдельные образцы коврового ткачества считались бесценными, так как были сделаны из самых дорогих материалов. По мнению историков ярким классическим примером является ковер “Весна Хосрова” или “Весенний ковер”, который шах династии Сасанидов, Хосров I, заказал для тронного зала своего дворца: размеры ковра, по мнению одних историков, составляют 140 метров в длину и 27 метров в ширину, а согласно другим исследователям - 30 х 30 метров. ince its creation, the carpet has been the highest expression of people imagination and creativity, nomadic as sedentary, and each have been embedded on looms the motif of their fascination, whether a repetitive arabesque ornaments, lovely scene transferred from marvellous mythological world converting them into authentic masterpieces, or Arcadian preserves where exotic flowers open in all their beauty, cohabiting with the most diverse wildlife, as well the popular tradition scenes such as hunting, or other costumbrist eidetic . Some of these artistic pieces have had an incalculable price, such as the most paradigmatic carpet known as “Spring” of Khusro, Sassanid king who commissioned it for reception room of his palace: made of the finest materials, the brocade loom, according some sources 140 m long and 27 m wide, while other researchers talk about an area of 30 x 30 meters, embroidered in silk, gold, silver and precious stones, shined a wonderful heavenly garden with the spring plants blooming in all their exuberance among paths and streams. The folk elements were purifying and abstract expression, patchwork, matching shades, geometric motifs, imaginative drawings were introduced into design... Armani, Versace, Vittorio & Luchino, Jordi Labanda, Ailanto Jaime Beriestain, Francesc Pons ... have already occupied the top of this new creative challenge that gives the spaces a distinctive touches that presume the authors´ signatures. It ´s true that the fireplace is the central axis of the home, however, the carpet, due the synthesis of useful and aesthetic value becomes the horizontal focus, thus, these two heat sources are fused into a indissoluble symbiosis of yin and yang, marking the frame where is developed a pleasant daily routine.

According to the Russian archaeologist Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko, the oldest woven carpet dates from the 5th century BC. Интерьеры “карменес” придают еще большую ценность кварталу Альбайсин и в комплексе составляют уникальный этнический памятник, сохранив почти нетронутыми всю мебель и технические приспособления эпохи династии Насридов. Это музей, который изредка открывает свои двери широкой публике. Богатое наследие отражено в книге “Carmenes de Albaicin”, издательства Альбайсин, в которой подробное изложение всех деталей дает возможность понять эти уникальные места.

In 1994 the Albaicín quarter joins to the list, the nucleus preserved in all its authenticity as in ancient times

where it was the power centre and gave initiation to the city which hundreds of years later conceived one of the greatest poets of all time, Federico García Lorca. The relevance of a multitude of Nazari and Renaissance monuments like Palace of Dar-al-Horrocks, residence of Aixa, mother of Boabdil, the Ziri walls, the Church of San Juan de los Reyes, or House of Castril as well the distinctive civic architecture, has placed the Albaicin on top of the most interesting places in the world in terms of historical and cultural heritage. The civil architecture of the Albaicin is a separate chapter: its “cármenes”, an endemic architectural phenomenon, housing composed of living space, garden and orchard with lush greenery and leafy, secluded from the outside by walls of a few meters

and a pristine whiteness, continue the sinuosity of the narrow streets in his ascent to the hill until the opening to bright, lively squares. “Cármen” has it´s origin in the word “karm” which meant a type of country house located outside the walls and provided with fountains and pools, which serve to their owners for recreation and relaxation times. The interiors of the cármenes are an added value, as represent a particular ethnic museum, having saved almost intact all the furniture and contrivance from the Nasrid ere ; museum that very occasionally opens to the enjoyment of the public.All this rich heritage is captured in the book Carmens de Albaicín, published by the Agency of Albaicín, which offers in all details the opportunity of entering in these unique environments.

Все чаще теоретики ставят под сомнение существование границ между модернизмом и китчем; лучший пример синтеза этих двух направлений обнаружен в творчестве художника эпохи Возрождения, Джузеппе Арчимбольдо. Его искусство, в то время считавшееся непонятным и устрашающим, сегодня кажется гениальным и выставляется в Лувре и других музеях Европы и США. Влияние итальянского художника, объявленного сегодня предтечей модернизма, наблюдается в работах двух гениев: Дали и Магритта. В архитектуре неповторимый Фрэнк Ллойд Райт, защищая свои последние проекты “фантазия китча”, отстаивал публично свободу творчества, радость от самого акта творения. Некоторые ученые даже видят элементы китча в великолепной эстетике архитектора Гауди.

И если основными признаками китча являются имитация, гипертрофированность предметов и ностальгическое повторение стилей прошлых лет (что это, как не эклектизм?), то один из самых знаковых образцов этого стиля находится на Коста-дель-Соль. Идеально вписанный в зеленые и землистые склоны, что возвышаются над морем в Бенальмадене, словно стражник былых времен, между 1987 и 1994 годом был построен замок Коломарес доктором Стивеном Мартином Мартином, гинекологом по специальности, большим эрудитом и знатоком искусства и архитектуры, который на тот момент не имел никакого практического опыта. Кроме характерных признаков, это уникальное сооружение было награждено критиками более высокими эпитетами: “искусство счастья”, “спонтанность выражения”, материализованная теория языковых игр Вингенштейна… Целью подвижничества доктора Мартина было увековечивание в камне исторической эпохи открытия Америки. Он реконструировал до мелочей и в совершенстве каждый элемент истории, обращаясь к давним временам и далеким странам. Диалог переполнен

неудержимой фантазией автора, его потрясающей эрудицией и использованием всех тем сложного семантического поля искусств архитектуры и скульптуры. Доктор Мартин, как Прометей, начинал работы один, по велению сердца, спонтанно и на собственные средства, позже у него появились два помощника. Это великое приключение рассказывает о зарождении испанского мира, воздавая должное истории открытия Америки и трем культурам, соединенным и идеально воплощенным в этом комплексе. Замок Коломарес по-настоящему грандиозное и чрезвычайно познавательное сооружение. Castle Colomares The Irresistible Beauty of Kitsch

“When we say that some work is considered kitsch, it is the same as thinking it a great work of genius.” (Federico Jorge Klemm, Argentine artist and patron)

ts essence and definition was once hotly debated by Germany’s critical vanguard, but these days the concept of kitsch is losing its pejorative connotations, even as it sets itself in the opposite corner from Minimalism’s stark impersonality. Theoreticians increasingly question the boundaries between Modernism and kitsch: the best example of the synthesis of these two artistic streams can be found in the work of the Renaissance painter, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, in his time considered bizarre and macabre, yet currently valued as a genuine artist and exhibited in the Louvre and several other important museums in Europe and the US. The influence that the Italian, today considered a genuine precursor of Modernism, had on Dali and Magritte ensured that kitsch would have a starring role in the oeuvre of these two prominent Surrealists, while in architecture the inimitable Frank Lloyd Wright publicly claimed that the character of the creative act justified any elements of kitsch. The label “kitsch fantasy” was

even used by some scholars to describe the sumptuous beauty of Gaudí’s buildings. If some basic features of kitsch are imitation, hyper-production of objects and nostalgic repetition of styles from the past, then one of the most obvious examples of this phenomenon can be found on the Costa del Sol. Perfectly situated on a hillside and rising above the coastal town of Benalmádena like a guardian of the past, stands Castle Colomares, built between 1987 and 1994 by Dr. Esteban Martin Martin, a consultant gynaecologist, scholar and connoisseur of art and architecture; however, he lacked any practical experience. Despite this he imagined this unique building which surely adheres to the highest definition of kitsch. It certainly reflects all of its definitions - “the art of happiness”, “spontaneity of expression” and Wittgensteinian game theory. This endeavour was envisaged to perpetuate the time of the Discovery in stone, recreating in perfectly executed detail

each element of its history and communicating with past centuries and distant spaces. And in this dialogue the author’s imagination and his impressive erudition overflows. Like Prometheus, Dr. Martin has undertaken a great adventure, explaining the genesis of the Hispanic world while also offering a tribute to the Discovery. The three cultures that have lived in these spaces and whose symbols are perfectly embedded in other construction elements are also celebrated in a totally improvised, self-funded manner, with the help of two expert masons from Málaga. It is truly a great work since, apart from telling the story so eloquently and palpably, it is a lesson in artistic and architectural styles, as the walls reflect Romanesque, Classical, Gothic, Byzantine and even Oriental influences. Above all, Castle Colomares is a beautiful, strange and fascinating building created by one man’s faith in his own vision.

entley is the gold standard of the English luxury motor racing world, matching classy sportiness with the latest technology and classic - but modern and spectacular – design. These factors make the Mulsanne Speed one of the world’s most desirable cars. The new 537 horsepower Mulsanne Speed comes with a 6750cc V8 engine, twin turbocharger, recalibrated gearbox, plus multi-mode air suspension and 21 inch wheels. One of the best achievements of this technology is a 13 per cent improvement in performance, which results in 80 kilometres more per each fuel tank. The body features more than 100 colour options while the interior can also be customised, thanks to 20 different leather colours in six different combinations, plus 10 plating options. The Mulsanne Speed’s interior uses the most

luxurious materials and the latest technology, making every trip a unique experience for driver and passengers. The standard equipment includes a 60GB hard drive to service the electrically operated tables, equipped with slots and connections for iPad and matching keyboards, that can be installed behind the front seats: a WiFi router keeps the car connected to the network. The detail that will satisfy the most demanding traveller is the option for a frosted glass bottle cooler behind the rear arm-rest, accompanied by a personalized set of glasses for champagne. The standard sound system - featuring 14 speakers - can be enhanced by a 2,200 watt premium quality Naim audio system made especially for Bentley and offering the best listening experience in a car in the world. The entertainment

system includes two eight-inch screens with a Bluetooth headset. The new air suspension system features three very different settings: Sport, Comfort and Bentley. The Sport mode ensures that driver and passengers enjoy the vehicle’s power and performance, provides greater rigidity to the suspension and adjusts the dynamics of the steering, so that it becomes faster and much more accurate. The latter two modes ensure that steering, chassis are set for maximum comfort. The driver can choose his steering, chassis and engine settings independently to suit his tastes through the Custom mode. The new Mulsanne Speed maintains the comfortable capabilities of the original model, but is now a highly responsive sports car with all the luxurious bells and whistles of a Bentley.

так, что же общего между маркой легендарных мотоциклов, часовой мануфактурой и мечтой? Все это объединить пришло в голову главному дизайнеру часовой марки Bell&Ross. Креативный директор Bell&Ross , Бруно Беламиш, вдохновленный мотоциклами Harley-Davidson, при создании новых часов - хронографа BR-01 и BR-03 B-Rocket - поступил парадоксально. Он сначала оформил внешний вид мотоцикла и затем, исходя из его дизайна, придумал часы, отличающиеся качеством, изысканностью и безупречным внешним видом. Проект был начат более года назад, когда Бруно Беламиш связался с Shaw Speed Motorcycles, самым крупным дилером HD в Европе и представил им эскизы мотоцикла. С

Bike and watch stand as testament to design, taste and perfection

t is this marriage of skills that now causes us to ask the question, what do a legendary motorcycle marque, a watch factory and a dream have in common? The answer to that is the very imaginative brain of the luxury watchmaker, Bell & Rossâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chief designer. Creative Director, Bruno Belamich, has a very special relationship with Harley-Davidson and, for the creation of two brand new watches (chronograph BR-01 and its little brother, the BR-03 B-Rocket), he has cunningly turned common sense on its head, designing a bike in order to create a watch that stands for quality, refinement and beautiful composition. The project began more than a year ago, when Bruno Belamich contacted Shaw Speed Motorcycles, the oldest Harley dealership in Europe, to

pass on the sketches of the bike he had in mind and with which he wants to break land speed records at Bonneville Speedway at the Bonneville Salt Flats and honour those engineers whose jet planes, designed in the 1960s, speed across our skies today. Everything has been a labour of love and originality, the challenge being to design a watch that any biker with style would like to possess and this was achieved in the shape of a bike and watch that stand as testament to design, taste and perfection. The B Rocket has beaten land speed records at The Bonneville Salt Flats and the BR-01 / BR-03 B-Rocket watches demonstrate that luxury and sportiness can - and should - go hand in hand. On November the 12th we were privileged to

attend the presentation of this beautiful motorcycle at the most successful HD dealer in the country, Makinostra Harley-Davidson in Madrid. Killing several creative birds with one stone, the Bell & Ross team united their BR-01 and BR-03 B-Rocket watches, the magnificent B-Rocket bike and the culinary know-how of Spainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great two-Michelinstarred chef, Sergi Arola. Arola not only rewarded us with a magnificent Yankee style brunch, making us feel as though we were in Salt Lake, but he also created a special cocktail for the occasion. The images of the finished bike and watch show that design can always go that bit further and that engineering and imagination result in a product that can satisfy even those with the most refined tastes.
