The Arabian edition Bouguessa, a local label that’s stealing the spotlight as it plans to take over the region by reinventing the Middle East’s traditional dress, the abaya. Forget blending in a sea of black; gone are the days where plain ruled supreme, now is the time to standout. Yes the abaya, over the past few years, has witnessed a reincarnation from a traditional cover-up to a stylish statement garment used to standout. Taking the lead is Faiza Bouguessa, a FrenchAlgerian designer paving the way to a new modern take when it comes to Arabic dress codes. Through modern, clean and refined designs, Bouguessa offers a refreshing opportunity for women to observe the traditional wearing of Abaya, while openly expressing their individuality and love of fashion. With a panel of contemporary, sleek and minimalist Abayas for their first collection, 70°, Bouguessa is slowly redefining the rules of Abaya fashion, all the while preserving its integrity. www.ohlala-magazine.com

A taste of Arabia Cool, feminine and authentic, the DKNY woman this Ramadan takes on a more traditional yet equally stylish look for the holy month, captured in a spirited collaboration between leading New York stylists for DKNY and two of the Middle East’s favourite social media bloggers, Yalda Golsharifi and Tamara Al Gabbani. ow did Almotahajiba start out? Almotahajiba started out in the old Doha Souq, or what is now known as Souq Waqif, thirty years ago. We first imported abayas and traditional accessories from across the region in order to fulfill the local demand. It wasn’t long before Almotahajiba started to design and produce its own designs, all with its own garment factory. Now, Almotahajiba is one of the largest abaya brands in the world, with its influence spread out across the MENA region and its reach quickly expanding further. How many designers work in creating the collections? We have a team of about ten designers, each with their own specialties, collaborating together to bring about each and every collection. Who is the ideal Almotahajiba woman? Aristocratic, elegant and modest are terms that have been applied to the Almotahajiba

“... a woman who upholds her background and tradition, culture and heritage. She is a woman who respects the black abaya and the story behind it, but is not afraid to add some colour to her life. Woman; a woman who upholds her background and tradition, culture and heritage. She is a woman who respects the black abaya and the story behind it, but is not afraid to add some colour to her life. She sets trends and believes in natural beauty. How many collections do you design a year? In order to be ahead of the trends, Almotahajiba designs four collections a year: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. What countries are your pieces sold in? And which market do you sell the most? We are present in eight countries across the MENA region: Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Morroco and Egypt. Our biggest market is the Qatari market. What are the Abaya and Jalabiya trends for Spring Summer 14? Body-conscious, with rigorous new shapes and no frills, definitely uncompromisingly feminine. The looks are sharp, perfectly shaped and formal. They show refined materials mixed as well as subtle layerings. Reduced shapes are decisive, as well as minimal-colour outlines. www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Almotahajiba started out in the old Doha Souq, or what is now known as Souq Waqif, thirty years ago. We first imported abayas and traditional accessories from across the region in order to fulfill the local demand. It wasn’t long before Almotahajiba started to design and produce its own designs, all with its own garment factory.” The look plays with strictness and marked masculine proportions, such as a strongly accented shoulder line defined by shoulder pads, and a feminine lightness featuring flounces, lingerie-optics and long, ultrafeminine slits. This feminine overstatement leads to a consistently modern, couture-like total look. Colours are minimalistic with black and white, sand or natural tones such as chalk, glass, linen, putty and taupe, complemented by pale sky-blue, jade, apricot and skin. The focus is on soft cotton, luxurious silk, linen and cashmere qualities, as well as jerseys, suede, light wool types. And for Autumn Winter 14, could you give us a preview of what to expect? - Geometry For Autumn/Winter, a variety of designers presented geometric pieces; this trend is all about sourcing inspiration from your old school textbooks, learning theorems and formulas to calculate a chic ensemble. - different texture blocks Simple colour blocking doesn’t offer much surprise, however when a variety of textures are combined - especially designs such as a motley coat with inserts of coloured fur and astrakhan fabric, it’s a whole different story. - Asymmetry ‘Symmetry is so boring’ is the message conveyed for next season, with a selection of designers 66

opting for asymmetrical designs. What makes your pieces standout amongst competitors? We always look at our customers’ needs and demands. We follow the trends, but at the same time we give our own interpretation of them in order to make our customers more comfortable. We use a lot of different embellishments like: modern textiles combinations, ari, embroidery, hand painting, or hand work beading, all done in our very own factory. So not only do we design our abayas, we produce them as well. Our customers can find different cuts of our design as well as styles starting from basic wear, evening, or wedding. Snake Chamer

Bulgari pays tribute to an ancient symbol in contemporary Italian fashion

A

n emblematic symbol, and one that has become synonymously associated with the Italian brand, the Serpenti has proven itself time and again to be Bulgari’s most iconic jewel. For its 130th anniversary, the luxury house pays tribute to the excellence of its Roman ateliers through the world of Serpenti; an Eternal City, symbolizing eternal renewal, just like the snake and the infinite reinterpretations of the Serpenti universe. Presenting a new and distinctive jewellery collection, Bulgari merges together two of its most iconic symbols of design: the contemporary soul of the tubogas and the power of the snake. The tubogas, a style born out of high technology, echoes the elaborate finery of Art Deco with its geometrical design and modernist lines. It brings together a nonconventional take on modern day creativity, and pays ode to the early snake shaped bracelet-watches of the brand. The new collection, which features two wrap-around bracelets and two rings, plays on the sinuosity suggested by the snake. It comes in soft feminine pink gold, which beautifully offsets the precious pave diamonds insertions on the head and on the tail of the snake. Beautiful pieces, the line exudes an elegance and sensuality associated with the modern-day woman of our time; a beautiful talisman for one of the most iconic signs of Bulgari. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty

Confidential

Whether you’re fasting or not, Ramadan and the heat will definitely take a toll on each and every one of us. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top tips and tricks to see you through this month. 1. KEEP MAKEUP NATURAL

We’ve all heard the term “Less is more” and this month it couldn’t be truer! Ramadan is the time to strip your beauty regimen down and consider going back to the basics: fresh skin, a neutral colour palette and polished beauty; put down that foundation and powder and go for a tinted moisturizer or swap your regular mascara for a clear one. Our must-have piece of the moment is definitely the new Collistar collection available at Merch!

2. AVOID EXTRA SUGAR

Instead of that Ramadan juice how about a bottle of water? The amount of sugar found in those drinks is shocking and will lead to more dehydration during the day; not only will you be dying from thirst, your skin will look dull and dry! Still want something sweet to drink, then head over to Anima Lounge at The Pearl. The cool contemporary café has a fantastic choice of healthy juices, ranging from immunity boosting to cleansing.

3. CLEANSE & TONE

Not only does your body go through a lot of ups and downs in Ramadan, but your skin is also taken on a whirlwind tour. The scorching heat of summer combined with fasting doesn’t fair well on one’s skin, so paying extra attention will be well worth the trouble come 78

TIPS FOR KEEPING FIT We know it’s super hard to get motivated to do any exercise in Ramadan with fasting and all. So here are some training tips to keep your fitness level up to par this month.

01

Keep your metabolism going by working out early in the morning or right after breaking your fast. This way you’ll be exercising after a meal and won’t disrupt your body clock.

02

Try to keep workouts to a minimum; a good 45 mins is all you need to keep in shape and not lose muscle definition.

03

Why not take up yoga or pilates? Both sports are relaxing and help tone the body, while not being too strenuous after a long day of fasting.

04

Exercise and diet go hand in hand. So don’t overeat at Iftar, we know that it’s hard to resist all those delicious Ramadan dishes but try to not over indulge!

05

Stay hydrated! We can’t begin to stress on how important it is to keep well hydrated and how much water one needs to drink just to keep up with the physiological stress that comes with this month.

Ramadan is definitely the time to strip your beauty regimen down and consider going back to the basics: fresh skin, a neutral colour palette and polished beauty. Keeping it simple has never been so important! Eid. With that said, paying a visit to a spa throughout Ramadan for a hydrating facial is a must. The Doha Marriott offers a fantastic treatment with their Pevonia facial, which will freshen skin leaving for porcelain smooth and youthfully radiant look. To book an appointment call 4429 8520

4. BOOST THAT BODY

Taking regular supplements in Ramadan can make a big difference to staying healthy. Probiotics and vitamins are key ingredients to breaking down and absorbing greater amount of nutrients from your meals, as well as keeping your immunity in check. We love the Aloe Vera Gel, which you can get from Doha’s leading wellness guru Nicole van Hattem. The ultimate healthy habit, it aids in weight loss, digestion, immune function, and easing general discomfort, perfect for those massive Iftars and Sohours that fill our calendar this month. For more information visit www.therawhealthcoach.com

5. DESTRESS & GET AWAY

Now is the perfect time to spa! Leave behind the grind of daily life and your hectic Ramadan schedule because sumptous products and luxurious treatments await. Head over to the Six Senses Spa and indulge in their Signature Special created exclusively for the holy month. Enjoy an 80-minute massage from one of the spa’s signature treatments of your choice plus a 20-minute treatment from a selection of hand, head or shoulder massage. To book an appointment call 4425 6999 /6995

6. FREE YOUR MIND

A healthy body always starts with a healthy mind, and this is a great time to start. The people at the vitality Zone, at the Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel, know just how to declutter one’s head from the daily stresses of life with their serene yoga classes. And with the option of picking the time and day of the class, this will easily fit into anyone’s routine. For more information call 4419 6090 OHLALA!

HONG KONG

WHEN TO GO

Spring is usually the best time to visit Hong Kong as humidity in the summer is quite unbearable. That being said, high season takes place from September through late December, with sunny dry days and cool comfortable nights.

WHY GO

A gateway to China and the Far East, Hong Kong offers a brilliant combination of urban, rural and maritime, where British colonial history melds seamingless alongside a rich Chinese culture. It’s where monster financial towers rise up beside humble traditional temples; where massive shopping emporiums compete against an even louder thriving nightlife; and where you’ll eat some of the best food you’ve ever tasted. It’s a spectacular treat for the senses, one that will leave you dazzled and breathless; it’s Hong Kong!

GETTING THERE

We can’t think of a better way of getting to Hong Kong than on their flagship airline Cathay Pacific Airways. Flying to 182 destinations in 42 countries, Cathay Pacific Airways launched its first flight to Doha this past March, with daily flights served by an airbus A330-300 aircraft with a three-class configuration –Business Class, Premium Economy Class and long-haul Economy Class. Through a strategic agreement with Qatar Airways, the airlines gives passengers, travelling between the two cities, full use of Doha International Airport’s Premium Terminal for passengers flying Business Class cabin, and exclusive access to Terminal A for all those travelling on Premium and long-haul Economy Class. In Hong Kong, passengers can enjoy the six Cathay Pacific lounges spanning an impressive 13,000 square meters, each characterized by its own individual identity, features and offering www.ohlala-magazine.com

to suit every passenger’s preference and choice. Voted “World’s Best Business Class” in Skytrax Award 2012 followed by “World’s Best Cabin Staff” Skytrax Award in 2013, Cathay Pacific’s Business Class offers passengers the comforts of home with one of the longest and widest beds ever provided on any commercial airline. And with inflight entertainment via StudioCX – a unique feature boasting a rotating library of 100 movies, 500 TV shows, 888 music CDs, 22 radio channels, and 70 games, the eight hour plus flight will pass in no time. For those travelling in either Econmy Class, the new enhancements in space and comfort between rows as well as multiple headrest and footrest positions, will make the flight as enjoyable as possible. And the excellence doesn’t stop there! Cathay Pacific onboard in-flight meals have been designed by a menu planning team to ensure the taste, authenticity and freshness of their culinary delights. Those flying from Doha will be thrilled at the regional offering on the list of menu options along with the airlines’ renowned signature Chinese dishes. OHLALA!

GETTING AROUND

The city’s public transporT system is fantastic and easy to manoeuvre around, no matter if you’re a first time traveller or have visited before. Once you arrive, make sure to buy a rechargeable Octopus card, essential if you’re planning to spend time on any public transport and one, which you can use on all buses, trains, and trams and the ferry. The MTR is the most efficient and quickest way to get around; it’s easy-to-use, fast and most importantly safe. Otherwise, taxis are plentiful and cheap, and the city’s air-conditioned double-decker buses can take you anywhere, provided you know which number and route to take. Don’t forget to venture out on foot, the city is a surprisingly good one to explore on foot. Head over to Central and check out the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator, which connects to MidLevels taking commuters into work, then reversing direction come evening.

Where to Eat

No other city in the world enjoys quite as eclectic a dining scene as Hong Kong. You’ll find luxury fine-dining restaurants by celebrity chefs just a stone’s throw away from small yet ever-so-popular local eateries that boast some of the best wonton dumplings in town.

84

OHLALA!

WHERE TO STAY

Whether you’re there on business or just a casual tourist exploring the city, you’ll definitely need to find a place where you can escape the manic pace of Hong Kong. Located at the mid-point between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, the Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East is home to 359 rooms and suites, all with panoramic views of the city. Equipped with top-notch facilities, clean-cut and contemporary furnishings, and luxury interiors from a design team of leading interior design professionals from Richards Basmajian, the hotel checks off all the boxes required by any Crowne Plaza property. Contemporary room decor combines dark wood and glass matched with clean cut lines, in earth tone colours to give a warm, yet relaxed atmosphere. Dining choices range from the all day dining buffet restaurant at The Chef ’s Table to Tze Yuet Heen’s Cantonese dining and a roof-top Italian restaurant that offers alfresco dining at its best, and turns into one of the island’s favourite spots for cocktails after dark. A state-of-the-art business centre serves the needs of those in town to close deals, while the fitness centre is open 24 hours. The hotel’s super convenient location atop Tseung Kwan O MTR Station and Popcorn Mall makes it easy to freely travel around the city, as well as an opportune place for a quick shopping spree. www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

his new ‘user-friendly’ Ferrari cabrio claims to offer Ferrari excitement alongside the practicality of boot-space, a two plus two seating configuration, and the added efficiency of a turbo. Does it deliver on all fronts? Ferrari has traditionally favoured big displacement in V8 and V12 naturallyaspirated engines, because the power delivery is instant and linear, and there’s no turbo-lag. However, global shifts in demand towards cars that are more efficient have prompted Ferrari to respond with this, the California T, where the ‘T’ is for turbo. With such a big change, there’s bound to be some nervousness on the part of Ferrari, as they endeavour to win over the purists. In the pre-drive technology briefing they went to great pains to explain the technology that made this new turbo-charged engine just as good as the V8 in the outgoing California, if not better. They needn’t have bothered. This new engine is, to put it quite simply, a masterpiece. Turbo-lag? You’d need to have

92

OHLALA!

some kind of electronic device to measure it, because it’s unnoticeable to the human brain. And indeed, Ferrari did have an electronic device, which measured it (and a graph to show the results), and it proved that the power delivery is only a new milliseconds slower than the old California’s V8 thanks to the twin-scroll turbo charger. The new V8 also produces 560hp to the old one’s 490, and 755Nm compared to 505Nm. This means that the California T will accelerate to 100km per hour in 3.6 seconds as opposed to 3.8, and on to 200km per hour in 11.2 seconds compared to 13.8. Top speed is also up by four to 316km per hour.

In comfort mode, the chassis soaks up the bumps and potholes of an uneven road with finesse, but in sport mode, the California T manages to tighten everything and produce more grip, without making the ride jarring to the point of discomfort. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva drives

The point is that this new engine provides more power for 15 percent less fuel, without compromising on performance and without noticeable turbo lag, which basically makes it better than the outgoing California, whatever anyone else says! I took the California T out for a two-hour spin on my own along some of the most beautiful winding country roads I’ve ever seen, and had something of a moment to myself. I’ve simply never enjoyed a drive quite so much in my life! This was only partly due to the stunning Tuscan scenery. The vast majority was down to the eminent driveability of this beautiful car. I’ve never driven a car so hard and so fast along unfamiliar winding roads, whilst still feeling completely at ease and relaxed. What little oversteer I experienced was corrected with a flick of opposite lock, and understeer… well, there was none! In comfort mode, the chassis soaks up the bumps and potholes of an uneven road with finesse, but in sport mode, the California T manages to tighten everything and produce more grip, without making the ride jarring to the point of discomfort. And the ESP interferes less in Sport, allowing for a tiny bit of sideways fun. Track mode I reluctantly left alone on these unfamiliar roads, as it turns the ESP off completely, and I don’t yet trust myself enough with someone else’s Ferrari! The racy growl of that new Ferrari V8 is just as delicious as you’d expect, and the slight scream of the turbo enhances rather than taints it. So there you have it; the Ferrari California T delivers in practically every way I can think of. It’s comfortable and luxurious, and therefore perfect for driving around town or for road trips. It’s practical, because it has four usable seats and enough boot space for shopping or luggage. Despite all this, you still get that special Ferrari excitement with the adjustable chassis and that glorious turbocharged V8 for when you want to open her up and let loose. And, it’s absolutely beautiful! What more could a girl ask for? www.ohlala-magazine.com

MISS OHLALA! Escapades of a single 20-something girl living in Doha. Ramadan commandments

This Ramadan I’ve decided to focus on detox, sleep and saving myself for the summer vacay. I have created a fool proof step by step guide to avoid boredom and over eating during the holy month, whether you are fasting or not. By now everyone living in Doha knows the traditional resolutions, but here are some more I have adapted in the past few years living here: Step 1 thou shalL not intoxicate thy self. No drinks, no cigs, and no coffee. One month where no harmful substances will enter my body. So goodbye dark circles under my eyes and morning after remorse. Step 2 thou shall cut carbs and sugar from diet. This may be harder than step one, but moving all our meals to the evening also means needing to give up on all those tasty evils - if you want to have a perfect bikini body by Eid that is. Remember sugar is the devil. Try avoid going to too many Ramadan tents because you will be tempted and also will be spending excessively. Step 3 thou shall move thy bootie. It is easy to get lazy in Ramadan and in this heat, so one must make bigger efforts to move. I find that shopping is a great form of cardio so a mall a day is a fun activity but do pace yourself when buying because you have a whole month to choose your holiday outfits. Another fun activity is night swimming. It may be too hot to splash around during the day but at night it’s a fun way to beat the heat and keep moving. Of course finding some Pilates, spinning or whatever classes you enjoy is a must – this will also hold you back from over eating if you are already committed to a workout. 122 OHLALA!

Step 4 thou shall catch up on reading. You know all those books on your shelf collecting dust? Well now that you have some down time pick ‘em up and read them- no excuses. Step 5 thou shall start a new TV show. You always feel left out when Game of Thrones conversation start heating up and you haven’t ever seen an episode? Well now you have plenty of time to start it from the beginning and join in! Personally I’m going to catch-up on my Grey’s Anatomy - there will be tears this Ramadan. Step 6 thou shall go to the cinema as much as possible. One thing we have a lot of in Doha are cinemas and they usually have quite a variety of new movies to choose from. And what better way to spend an evening then watching a 3D sci-fi or a cute rom com (even if all the good bits are censored). Step 7 thou shall redecorate. Now is the time to spend more time at home and do all those things we should have done months ago. Change the curtains, stick those fun design stickers on your bathroom wall, paint your doors red… Get creative! If you follow these steps not only will you be happier but hotter too. Always works for me anyway. Ta ta for now...
