#0 Paradijsvogels

Inspiratie kwam in Naturalis in Leiden. Om precies te zijn, bij een rariteitenkabinet gevuld met paradijsvogels. Heel lang geleden dachten mensen dat paradijsvogels nooit op de grond kwamen. De opgezette exemplaren in de rariteitenkabinetten hadden immers geen pootjes. Later bleek dat bij het transporteren van de dieren, de pootjes als eerste afbraken. Niemand die daaraan gedacht had. Er zijn nu vast nog steeds mensen die denken dat Paradijsvogels in de lucht slapen. En om eerlijk te zijn is dat een fantastische gedachte! Paradijsvogels zijn wonderlijke wezens. Ze maken gekke dansjes om een partner te veroveren, hun veren in de vreemdste vormen opvouwend. Zo doen ze dat al eeuwen en blijkbaar werkt het.
Daarom dus Paradijsvogels als thema voor dit eerste nummer. Want Oh Marie! gaat over dingen met een twist. En over grappige details. En over eigen stijl. Oh Marie graaft graag naar schatten, houdt van mooie dingen (hoe klein ook), woont in een fijn ingericht huis en draagt zich een breuk door de camera om haar nek. Let maar op, als je klaar bent met kijken en lezen, voel je je vrolijker en heb je zeker 1x hardop gelachen. En als dat niet zo is, dan druk je op delete...’opgeruimd staat netjes’ is ook een van onze lijfspreuken, namelijk!
Inspiration came at the Natural Historic Museum in Leiden, at an old cabinet of curiosities with a couple of stuffed birds of paradise in it. The displayed examples didn’t have feet, so in the old days people thought that birds of paradise never touched ground. It turned out that the legs where the first thing to break off when they were transported. There might still be some (very old) person here or there who still thinks birds of paradise sleep high up in the air. And to be honest, isn’t that a fantastic thought? Birds of paradise are peculiar creatures. They do these crazy dances to impress the ladies, while folding their feathers in the utmost mindstaggering shapes. They did it for centuries and apparently, it works. That’s why this issue got this theme. Oh Marie! likes things with a twist. And funny details. And personal style. Oh Marie! likes the hunt for treasures, loves things of beauty (no matter how small), lives in a nicely decorated home and carries her camera around everywhere she goes. If you’re done flipping through this issue, I guarantee you: you’ll feel happier and laughed out loud at least once for sure. If not, you just hit the ‘delete’ button. ‘Cause good riddance to bad rubbish is our motto, too!

"Paradijs in In ieder nummer vraagt Oh Marie! een fotograaf met een voorliefde voor analoge camera’s zijn of haar lievelingsfoto te analyseren. Danique, blogger en fotograaf (we gaan nog veel van deze dame horen!), vertelt over een paradijselijke dag in een zee van gras. “Deze foto heb ik genomen met een oude Nikon FE2 en Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens. Mijn vader, zelf fotograaf in zijn jongere jaren, heeft mij deze gegeven toen ik 17 was. De 35mm camera stamt uit de jaren tachtig en ik doe altijd alsof mijn vader ‘m kocht in het jaar waarin ik ben geboren, 1988 (dit is vast niet waar, maar het klinkt zo romantisch). Het is een camera die erg makkelijk is in gebruik. Ik ben vooral gek op de 50mm lens; de scherpte, focus en licht die ‘t toevoegt aan mijn foto’s verrassen me elke keer weer en worden altijd precies zoals ik hoop. Deze foto is genomen met een sluitertijd van 1/250 op f/1.4 met een verlopen rolletje Kodak 200 die ik op een rommelmarkt vond. Kodak 200 geeft doorgaans goed scherpe beelden en heldere kleuren. Deze foto is volgens mij wat groener dan normaal, maar verder kan ik er niets ‘verlopens’ aan vinden. Toen ik deze foto nam zat ik op een kleedje onder een boom met een goede vriendin. We aten aardbeien en kletsten over ‘t leven, een zacht briesje bewoog de bladeren. Er was niemand in de buurt en we hadden bijna de hele tijd onze ogen dicht. Ik voelde me intens ontspannen, alsof we de tijd even hadden stilgezet. Ik ben zo blij dat ik toen besloot om deze foto te maken, want elke keer als ik deze foto zie herinner ik me de geuren, geluiden en het mooie uitzicht. Dat mijn gare negatievenscanner stof en krasjes aan de foto heeft toegevoegd werkt heel goed bij ‘t gevoel van de foto. Ik vind de vlekjes licht op het gras in de achtergrond ook heel mooi, net als de focus op mijn blote tenen en de kleur van mijn afgetrapte sandaaltjes. Het contrast van ‘t witte kleedje tegen het donkere gras laat lijken alsof we op een eiland in een groene zee lagen – precies zoals het toen voelde.” Blog Danique:

een zee van gras" In every issue of Oh Marie! a photographer with a love for old, analogue camera’s tells the story behind his or her favourite picture. Danique, blogger and photographer (we’re gonna hear more from this lady, mark our words), tells the story of a divine day amidst a sea of green. “I took this picture with an old Nikon FE2 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens. My father, who has done his bit of photography back in the days, passed down this camera to me when I was 17. This 35mm camera dates back to the 1980's and I'd like to think my dad got this camera in the same year I was born, 1988 (even though this is probably not true, it just sounds nice). The camera itself is very easy to use. I’m particularly fond of the lens on it, the sharpness, focus and light it adds to my photos gets me every time. The images always turn out exactly how I imagine they will. This picture was shot at 1/250 on f/1.4 using outdated Kodak 200 film I bought at a flea market. Kodak 200 usually gives you very sharp images and good colours. I think this one has a greener hue than usual, but other than that I can't see any real 'outdated' marks on this picture. I snapped this picture sitting on a blanket under a tree with a very dear friend, we ate strawberries and talked about life, there was a soft breeze moving the leaves. There was no one around, we had our eyes closed most of the time and I felt so relaxed. Like we could stop time for a few hours. I’m so glad I then decided to take this picture, because every time I see this picture I remember the smells, sounds and great view. I really like the scratches and dust my crappy scanner added to it. I love the bits of sunlight you can see on the grass in the background, the focus on my bare toes and the colour of my worn out sandals. I think the contrast of the white blanket against the dark grass makes it look like we were on a tiny island amidst a sea of green - exactly how it felt.”

Roodborstjes zijn zeer onverdraagzame typetjes. En omdat mannetjes en vrouwtjes er hetzelfde uitzien, worden ook vrouwtjes als indringer behandeld. Tot het mannetje zijn fout inziet en snel op versiertrucs overgaat. De Roodborst is dus eigenlijk een heel tof vogeltje! Martine verkoopt niet alleen hele fijne papierwaren (met liefde verzameld uit alle windstreken), ze heeft mooi inpakken ook tot een kunst verheven. Twee goede redenen waarom wij fan zijn van haar winkel en weblog. Speciaal voor Oh Marie! ontwierp Martine deze Roodborst (niet territoriaal, geslacht onbekend).

Robins are quite intolerant little creatures. Both male and female are similar in colouration, that’s why female birds are also attacked as they stray into a male’s territory. As soon as the male realizes he’s made a mistake, he swiftly switches to a more flirty kind of behaviour. Robins are therefore pretty cool birds, we think! Martine sells peachy perfect papergoods (collected from all corners of the world) in her shop and has that ‘esprit de finesse’ when it comes to wrapping things. Imagine how fab it is to receive something from her shop! For these (and many more) reasons we like her very much and you can imagine our joy when she agreed to design this non-territorial-gender-unknown-Robin especially for Oh Marie!

Nodig:
Gekleurd karton of stevig papier (boekhandel), honeycombpapier (te koop bij eennieuwavontuur.com), papiermes of schaar, lijm, stukje draad van ca. 40 cm, zwarte stift, bruin potlood
Stap 1.
Teken met behulp van het sjabloon alle vormen 2x op de juiste kleur karton en snij of knip deze uit. A
Stap 2:
Knip uit het honeycombpapier twee keer het ‘halve ei’. Houd rekening met de richting van het papier (zie pijl). B
Stap 3:
Vouw het draadje dubbel, leg onderin (lus) een klein knoopje. Plak de twee vormen van honeycombpapier op elkaar met het draadje ertussen, zodat het knoopje net onder de ‘buik’ uitsteekt.
Stap 4:
Plak alle kartondelen op elkaar. Maak met de achterkant van een schaar een ril waar straks de vleugel omgevouwen kan worden.
Stap 5:
Plak op de ene buik het stapeltje honeycomb. De bolle kant richting de vleugels, de rechte zijde evenredig met het karton. Plak de bovenkant van het stapeltje op de andere buik. Op dezelfde wijze en zo dat het draadje tussen beide delen door valt. C
Stap 6:
Teken de ogen en een streep over de snavel. Plak de binnenzijdes van de vogel op elkaar zodat het draadje er in het midden van de vleugels uitsteekt. Vouw de vleugels naar beneden en klaar! D
Materials: Coloured cardboard or heavy weight paper, honeycomb tissue paper, scissors, glue, piece of string (appr. 15”), black marker, brown pencil. Step 1:
Trace around all the templates onto the right coloured pieces of paper. Cut out the shapes. A
Step 2:
Cut the ‘half egg shape’ out of the honeycomb paper twice. Be sure you hold the paper into the direction the arrow points (glue lines oriented horizontally). B
Step 3:
Fold the piece of string in half, tie a knot at the end with the noose. Glue together the two pieces of honeycomb paper and glue the wire between these two pieces. Make sure the end of the wire (with the knot) sticks out.
Step 4:
Glue together the paper pieces of the bird.
Step 5:
Glue one side of the honeycomb paper on one side of the belly. Glue the other end of the honeycomb paper on the other side of the belly. C
Step 6:
Draw the eyes and beak. Glue together the rest of the bird and again, make sure the rest of wire sticks out in the middle. Fold the wings. Your Robin is ready for take-off! D

Styling Yvestown & ATLITW
Toen twee van mijn idolen instemde proefkonijn te willen zijn voor dit eerste nummer van Oh Marie! heb ik er twee nachten niet van geslapen. Deze vrouwen hebben niet veel introductie nodig, hun stijl is al jaren bekend én geliefd. Waar dit artikel over gaat? Over de stylingideeën van twee creatieve mensen, niet meer en niet minder. Ze delen daarnaast ook wat hun heimelijke genoegens zijn en wat hun grootste misstappen... interieurwijs gesproken natuurlijk!
When these two idols of mine agreed to be used as guinea pigs for this first issue of Oh Marie! I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep for a night or two (...three..make that a week). These ladies don’t need much introduction really, their sense of style is world famous! So, what is the deal here? Two (very creative) people share their styling ideas with us, nothing more and nothing less. They also tell us a wee bit about their guilty pleasures and faux-pas... decoratingly speaking of course!

Yvonne trekt dagelijks met kwast en verf ten strijde tegen het bruine oude-mannetjes interieur van haar (klus)huis, het langzaam veranderend in een oase van wit, roze, bloemen en licht. Ze schrijft hierover op haar prachtige weblog www.yvestown.com. Waarom ben je ooit begonnen met bloggen? Ik ben mijn blog begonnen als ‘creative outlet’ voor de restauratie van mijn voormalige huis en omdat ik graag online ben. Wat was als kind je eerste styling oplossing? Ruimte for het Barbie huis met aangrenzende tuin. Heb je een favoriete styling oplossing? Hou de basis van je huis wit en voeg kleur toe met makkelijk vervangbare items zoals meubels en accessoires. Zo kan je altijd makkelijk je interieur transformeren zonder drastische ingrepen. Wat is je meest geliefde interieuritem en hoe kwam je eraan? Mijn kledingkasten, gevonden op Marktplaats. Wat was je grootste misstap, interieurwijs gezien? Maak ons bang! Ik dacht dat het slim was om met zwart te werken, nu dat zo'n trendy interieur kleur. Ik heb geleerd dat ik helemaal niet trendy ben want ik heb een hekel aan zwart en het ziet er lelijk uit in mijn interieur. Op welke manier past dit interieur bij je persoonlijkheid? Fris, georganiseerd, schoon, vrolijk en creatief. Zijn er, naast je weblog, nog andere plekken waar je foto's van je interieur deelt? Yvonne is changing her old gentleman’s house into a ladies home, battling all things brown with loads of pink and white paint. She writes about this on her gorgeous blog www.yvestown.com. For what reason did you ever start to write a blog? I’ve started my blog as a creative outlet for the restorations of my previous home and because I like to be online. What was your first styling idea ever? Room for the Barbie house and it's joint garden. Do you have a favourite styling solution? Keep the structure of your home white and start adding colour using easy replaceable items such as furniture and accessories. That way you can easily transform your interior without making drastic changes. Your most loved interior item and how it got into your home? My wardrobes, found on Marktplaats.nl (Dutch craigslist). Biggest interior blunder? Scare us! I thought it was wise to work with black, as it seems such a trendy interior colour right now. But I learned soon enough that I'm not trendy as I really dislike black and it looks hideous in my interior. In what way does your interior reflect your personality? Fresh, ordered, clean, whimsical and creative. Are there any other places on the net where you share pictures of your home, beside your blog? Met teruggevonden schatten, bewaard afval en bijna-vergeten herinneringen maakt ze nieuwe eclectische kunstwerken. “Repeating colours” Waarom ben je ooit begonnen met je blog/winkel/etc.? Ik ben begonnen met mijn website en webwinkel All the Luck in the World omdat ik mijn zelfgemaakte spullen en kunstwerken aan de wereld wilde tonen en eventueel verkopen. Dat in combinatie met alle schatten die ik tegenkwam op rommelmarkten en in kringloopwinkels. Mijn blog kwam later en daarna ook een Etsy winkel. Wat was als kind je eerste stylingoplossing? Toen ik een jaar of 8 was vond ik een krukje op straat, die heb ik geschilderd (zilver) en bekleed met een lapje stof. In onze tuin stond een speelhuisje, ik was daar altijd aan het inrichten. Waarom koos je voor deze setting? Het borduurwerk is het meest paradijsvogelachtige ding hier in huis. De rest is min of meer toeval. De schaal van papier-maché heb ik pas gemaakt dus hij stond al op deze plek en het vaasje met de roos had ik net gekocht bij de kringloop. Door het kruisje van washi tape komt de roze kleur weer terug. Heb je een favoriete styling oplossing? Ik gebruik graag washi tape om dingen aan de muur te plakken of als versiering. Ik geloof wel dat ik op zoek moet naar iets nieuws, het wordt inmiddels overal gebruikt. Wat is je meest geliefde interieuritem en hoe kwam je eraan? Ik denk mijn Martin Visser bank uit de jaren ‘60 al zit hij niet echt lekker. Toen ik ruim 20 jaar geleden in Amsterdam woonde stond hij ineens voor mijn huis op straat. Ik was hoogzwanger maar heb hem toch naar binnen gesleept. Wat is je grootste misstap, interieurwijs gezien? Maak ons bang! Hahaha, ik heb een keer de buitenruimte tussen mijn keuken en schuurtje knal blauw geschilderd. Het zag er niet uit. Mijn (toenmalige) partner kwam thuis en pakte meteen de witkwast. Paradijsvogel of huismus? Allebei!
For what reason did you ever start to write a blog? I started my website and shop because I wanted to show and sell my thrifted treasures and handmade items to the world. My blog and Etsy shop followed a while after that. First styling idea ever? At the age of 8, I found a stool on the side of the road which I painted (silver) and upholstered with a piece of fabric. We had a kids house in our garden which I redecorated constantly. Why did you choose this setting? The embroidery fitted the theme, the rest of the setting happened by coincidence. I recently made the paper maché bowl and I had just found the vase at a thriftshop. To complete the composition I made the pink colour return with a cross made of washi tape. Do you have a favourite styling solution? Currently, I use washi tape to mount things to the walls or use it plain as decoration. Quite frankly, I feel like I need to find me a new favourite decorating solution, it’s already been done so many times. Your most loved interior item and how it got into your home? That would be my Martin Visser couch, even though it isn’t that comforable to sit on. Back in the days when I was living in Amsterdam, somebody left it on the side of the road right before our home. Heavily pregnant or not, I hauled it into my home. Biggest interior blunder? Scare us! Hahaha! I painted the space between the kitchen and shed bright blue once which really didn’t work out well. When my (former) partner came home, he immediately grabbed a bucket of paint and painted it white again. House Sparrow or Bird of Paradise? Both! 13

Kitsch Flashy Zoals de beeldjes in de kringloop staan, zou je ze voorbij lopen (wat ook bijna gebeurde, maar dat kwam omdat ze ook nog eens boven ooghoogte stonden). Ze lijken immers in eerste instantie beter te passen op Mien’s dressoir met plastic rozen dan op je eigen strakke witte wandkast. De oma in ons viel echter voor hun gedetailleerdheid, hun pastelkleur en de bloemen op hun sokkel. Afwijkende items zijn naar onze mening het meest spannend om in je interieur te versmelten, het gaat immers om de wijze waarop je dat doet. Dat wil Oh Marie! je laten zien met deze foto. Op www.ohmarie.nl/0/give-away/ kan je zien hoe we het stilleven opbouwde en het optisch kloppend maakten. Want dat is in principe wat je doet als je je huis inricht: je maakt het optisch aantrekkelijk. Bijna alles kan, zolang jijzelf maar blij wordt van het eindresultaat. Dus, wat let je, de volgende keer als je het pad kruist van een kitscherig beeldje..gewoon proberen. En gooi er, als je toch bezig bent, meteen wat plastic rozen tegenaan!
The way these statues were displayed in the thriftshop didn’t make them very appealing (their high displayance didn’t help either). ‘Cause let’s be frank, you could easily picture these birds on your auntie’s dresser... not on your own flashy white sideboard, huh? The blue-haired lady in us took over though and made us take them home anyway. Almost every item you find at second hand shops could be integrated into your home really, as long as you give it that twist that makes it hip again. That’s what Oh Marie! shows you with this picture. Oh Marie! is gek op schatgraven, dat is geen nieuws meer. Aangezien we ook gek zijn op koffie met gebak, gaan we graag bij mensen langs rond koffietijd..en schieten meteen wat foto’s van het interieur. We zijn er immers toch! In dit eerste nummer zijn we op de koffie bij Ellen Bronk, een dame met een liefde voor oude borduurwerken. De liefde gaat zó ver dat ze er bijna alles mee bekleedt, behalve haar lieve huisgenoot, hond Badou. Soort woning Antikraak, hoekwoning Eigen stijl? (Zeer overtuigd) Gek! Wat is je interieurschat en wat is het verhaal erachter? Mijn interieurschat is een zelf gebeeldhouwde, zwarte vrouwentorso van steen die ik 15 jaar geleden maakte. De torso staat voor mij voor vrouwelijke energie, voor het ontstaan van het leven en daarmee creativiteit. Ze ligt bij de open haard. Niets voor mij? Een klinisch, strak, modern huis met grote kale ruimtes en muren. Zo’n huis dat hol klinkt. Heimelijk woongenoegen? Ik ga graag met Badou naar het bos, waar ik mooie takken verzamel. Dat hout verwerk ik in mijn werkplaats: ik boor er gaatjes in, verwerk het, soms verf ik het. Eigenlijk is dit genoegen niet echt heimelijk te noemen, het wonder der natuur komt in de vorm van takken, vogelveren en dieren in allerlei soorten en maten terug in mijn interieur. Droom? Ik ga binnenkort verhuizen naar een boerderij om daar met mijn grote liefde te gaan wonen. Ik verheug me er enorm op samen een fijne plek op te bouwen, in de rust en de ruimte van het platteland, in verbinding met de natuur. Favoriete plek in huis? De allerfijnste plek is toch de loods bij het huis van mijn vriend, waar ik aan mijn creatieve projecten kan werken en lekker kan rommelen. Waarom borduurwerken? De energie en liefde die een ander daar in gelegd heeft, is geweldig. Ik ben altijd bezig geweest met het combineren van kleuren en vind het erg leuk om met iets ouds iets opnieuw vorm te geven. Al sinds mijn 15e ga ik naar kringloopwinkels. Ik hou van de spanning om iets moois te vinden. Dingen werden vroeger vaak nog zo mooi en met liefde gemaakt, dat spreekt me enorm aan. 17
We at Oh Marie! love to treasure hunt, that’s no news. We also love to go over to people for coffee and sweets and, since we’re already there, shoot some pics of their homes too! For this issue we visited Ellen Bronk, a lady who has a love for vintage embroideries which she uses to upholster almost everything (except her sweet dog Badou). Kind of home An anti-squat corner home Style? (Convinced) Whimsical! What’s your interior treasure? My biggest treasure is a black woman’s torso I carved out of stone myself, 15 years ago. To me, the torso symbolises feminine energy, the beginning of life and, along with that, creativity. She sits at the fire place in the livingroom. Not for me, thanks A clinical, sleek, too modern home, the kind that sounds hollow when you walk through it. Secret interior pleasure? I love to make things with the branches I take home from my walks through the woods with Badou. This pleasure isn’t that secretative though, my love for nature shines through my entire interior in all kinds of forms. Dreaming of? I’ll soon be moving to a farm to live there with my boyfriend. I’m looking very much forward to build a nest together and to living amongst the quietness of the countryside. Favourite place in my home? That would be my boyfriends’ shed, the place where I can potter around with my branches, embroideries and other creative projects. Why embroideries? The love and energy someone put into a cross-stitched piece of work makes it so special to me. Combining colours is something I’ve been doing since I-don’t-know-when and I love the idea of making something new with something old. I have been visiting thriftshops since I was 15 years old, the thrill of the hunt for something beautiful is quite addictive! Apart from that, things were made with a great amount of love and craftmanship back in the days, another aspect I love about second hand stuff. 18

FASHION De duinen in met Zilverblauw...
De zee komt zelfs terug in haar bedrijfsnaam: Zilverblauw. Anki brengt graag tijd door aan de kust, vrije tijd vierend met haar gezin en lieve vrienden. Anki en Marieke maakten deze juweel van een reportage met hun kinderen als super hippe modellen. Liefde kan je niet kopen, een hippe stijl zeker wel. Het hoeft zelfs amper iets te kosten! Er is genoeg leuke kinderkleding te koop. Als je portemonnee het toelaat, kunnen je kinderen erbij lopen als kleine designers. Weinig creatief én onhaalbaar voor de meeste ouders. De kunst is je kinderen leuk aan te kleden zónder dat het je een fortuin kost. Stijl heeft immers niet per definitie met geld te maken. Marieke (35) en haar kinderen Toni (7) Seppe (6) en Jip (2) weten daar alles van. Als er een koningin is op het gebied van kinderkleding-met-stijl-voor-weinig, dan is het absoluut Marieke. She and her friend Marieke made this beauty of an article, with their own children as super hip models. Money can’t buy you love, but little money surely can buy you great style! There’s plenty of great stuff available for your child’s wardrobe and if you are filthy rich, your children can always walk around looking like little designers. Not very creative and, more importantly, not within reach for the most of us. Dressing your kids great and not spend much money on it, is way cooler and doesn’t cost you a fortune.
