Dit is het begin van de 7e editie van Oh Marie! Zeven is een magisch getal en voor dit nummer lieten we ons dan ook meevoeren het konijnenhol in, zetten alles op z’n kop en lieten de wind der verandering door onze hoofden en door de pagina’s van Oh Marie! waaien. En over 7 gesproken: Marlous, de oprichter en roverhoofdvrouw van Oh Marie! is bijna zeven maanden zwanger. Na 1,5 jaar fulltime magazine maken en de magische grens van 50.000 lezers per nummer overschreden te hebben, is dit het perfecte moment om een stap terug te doen en nieuwe plannen te smeden voor de toekomst van Oh Marie! Daarom starten we dit nummer met een kort gesprek met Marlous over schatten, bezieling, baby’s en de toekomst. Hoi! Hoe is het? Prima, eigenlijk wel! Ondanks dat je er niet veel van ziet, zit er toch echt al een bescheiden buik onder die tafel! We verwachten ons kleine meisje komende zomer, heel erg spannend. Ik hou ontzettend van Oh Marie! en het maken ervan, maar aangezien het ook een enorme klus is om het te maken kijk ik inmiddels ook best een beetje uit naar mijn verlof. Laten we bij het begin beginnen: je hebt in een donker verleden je dagen van 9 tot 5 op kantoor gesleten. Op welk punt besloot je je secretaressebril in de wilgen te hangen en een praktische gids voor iedereen met een creatieve ambitie te gaan maken? Die dagen waren zeker donker ja. Ik kan me al bijna niet meer voorstellen dat ik 10 jaar heb doorgebracht op kantoren met oranje tapijt en kersenhouten kantoormeubelen (waarom is kantoormeubilair altijd zo lélijk?). Eind 2011 verloor ik mijn baan door de economische crisis. Het voelde direct als de start van een nieuw leven. Ik was in 2009 al begonnen met bloggen, had al een Etsy shop en een heleboel nieuwe creatieve mensen leren kennen. De basis lag er al, dus de keuze om een creatieve onderneming te starten was geen moeilijke. In januari 2012 ging ik een dag op stap met vriendinnen die ook creatief ondernemer zijn. We bespraken het feit dat er zo weinig écht leuke creatieve tijdschriften in Nederland te krijgen zijn en, heel eerlijk, ik schepte een beetje op dat ik best goed zou zijn in het maken van een blad. Eén van mijn vriendinnen, ik noem haar vaak mijn Orakel, haakte daarop in en vroeg zich af waarom ik er dan geen een maken ging. Natuurlijk lachte ik dat bizarre idee in eerste instantie weg, tot ik me realiseerde dat het alles bij elkaar zou brengen waar ik zo van hou: fotograferen, stylen, schrijven en oké…die secretaresse vaardigheden komen ook best van pas bij het hele optuigen van zo’n nummer. Dat is in een notendop het verhaal van Oh Marie: ik ben gewoon begonnen (wat een even naïeve als effectieve startmethode is ;-)). “For the love of treasure hunting” is de ondertitel van Oh Marie! Op welke schatten ben jij gestuit via het magazine? Ik heb ontzettend veel geleerd de afgelopen twee jaar. Over mezelf en over de weerbarstigheid van het ondernemen. En ik heb mijn verhaal een aantal keer mogen presenteren voor een groot publiek én het overleefd…over schatten gesproken! Maar wat ik boven alles koester is dat ik me door Oh Marie! ben gaan realiseren dat ik alleen de kwaliteit en bezieling waarmee ik mijn werk doe kan opbrengen als het recht uit mijn hart komt. Het maken van dit blad is vaak moeilijk, weerbarstig en/of frustrerend, maar omdat ik het geheel volgens mijn regels kan uitvoeren laat ik me nooit uit het veld slaan. Het is een beetje zoals met het hebben van kinderen, stel ik me zo voor. Er zijn dagen dat je zielsveel van ze houdt en dagen dat je ze achter het behang wil plakken...maar dat komt juist voort uit het feit dat ze je zo na aan het hart liggen. Wat is het leukst aan het maken van Oh Marie? Iedere keer word ik weer ontzettend blij van de geweldige mensen die willen bijdragen aan een nieuw nummer. Aan alle tijd, moeite en liefde die ze belangeloos in hun bijdrage steken. Ik wil dit moment dan ook aangrijpen voor een grote virtuele groepsknuffel! Het in elkaar zetten van het magazine samen met Casper (Boot, onze grafisch vormgever) voelt altijd als het inlijsten van een kunstwerk: alsof je de kers op de taart legt. En daarnaast zijn het bedenken van nieuwe invalshoeken op een thema en het fotograferen en stylen van producties de dingen die ik het liefste doe. Iedere ouder heeft in gedachten een ideaalbeeld van de toekomst van zijn kind. Aangezien het magazine jouw kind is vraag ik me af: wat voor toekomst heb je ervoor voor ogen? Tot nu toe is het ontzettend leuk geweest om het magazine te maken en ben ik apetrots op alles wat we bereikt hebben in zo’n korte tijd. Aan de andere kant is het ook heel erg nodig om het tijdschrift veel beter te gaan vermarkten: het moet simpelweg meer geld op gaan leveren. Ik wil mensen graag fatsoenlijk betalen voor de moeite die ze in mijn blad steken en ik denk dat we daarmee de kwaliteit van het blad maar ook van het blog naar een nog hoger niveau tillen kunnen. Daarbij is het echt een beetje gekkenwerk om in je eentje een tijdschrift te maken en het zou geweldig zijn als ik iemand kon vinden die fulltime de PR en Marketing kant van Oh Marie! zou willen oppakken. Dat blijft nu veel te veel liggen, terwijl het een essentieel onderdeel van bedrijfsvoering is. 2

Het kan aan mij liggen, maar volgens mij ging dat ding op een stadium zijn eigen leven leiden! Tot slot: vandaag is de niet-verjaardag* van Oh Marie, van jou en van grofweg zo’n beetje 99% van onze lezers. Hoe ga je dat vieren? Ik ga deze niet-verjaardag vieren met het eten van al dat pastelkleurige snoep dat we nog over hebben van de Masterclass. En nu ik er over nadenk: dit nummer is weer zo prachtig geworden dat ik misschien ook nog wel een eigenaardig theefeestje ga organiseren! *iedere dag behalve iemands verjaardag This is the beginning of the 7th issue of Oh Marie! Seven is a magical number, and it has taken us down the rabbit hole, turning a few things up side down, letting the wind of change blow through our minds and pages of Oh Marie! Marlous, the founder and the magazine making superstar behind Oh Marie! also happens to be nearly seven months pregnant (speaking of coincidences!). Having been a fulltime magazine maker for a year and getting to a point of reaching a whopping 50,000 readers per issue, a baby break is a perfect opportunity to take a step back and start plotting for some exciting new plans for the magazine’s future. To kick off this issue, we had a little chat with Marlous about the perks of being a magazine maker. Good day! How are you? I’m pretty fine actually! Although you can’t see it, there’s already a pretty big baby bump underneath that table, haha! We are expecting our baby-girl next summer, so we have exciting times ahead! I love making this magazine, but since it’s also a pretty demanding job, I’m looking forward to my maternity leave. Let’s start from the beginning: you have a hazy history of having spent your time sitting in an office from 9 to 5 before becoming a magazine maker. How did you end up ditching your secretarial glasses and decide to start making a practical guide for people to develop their own style and creativity? Oh hazy it was! I can hardly believe it anymore that I actually spent ten years at dull offices feeling miserable. It was the winter of 2011, when I lost my job due to the financial crisis - a true blessing and not even in disguise! Before that, I had already started blogging in 2009, opened an Etsy shop and made a lot new, creative friends, which didn’t make it hard to choose for the creative business ownership after being fired. In January 2012, when I was pondering on what to do with this employer free-life of mine, I met up with some friends, who happen to be creative business owners as well. I mentioned how few cool, contemporary craft magazines there are in The Netherlands and how cool it would be to publish one on your own. One of my friends, who I often refer to as my Oracle, reacted very enthusiastically to the idea. I laughed it away in the beginning, but soon I realised a magazine like that would bring together all the things I love doing the most: photographing, styling, writing and okay, those secretarial skills would come in handy too in organising the whole shebam. That’s the Oh Marie! story in a nutshell: I just started (which sounds just as naïve as it is effective ;-)). ”For the love of treasure hunting” is Oh Marie’s tagline. What kind of treasures have you found through the magazine? I have learned so much over these two years, about myself and about the perks of being a (rookie) business owner! I have presented my story to terrifyingly large audiences last year and I’m still alive…speaking of treasures! Furthermore, I have learned that I can only do what I do with the spirit of my own, because it comes straight from my heart. No matter how difficult this magazine making road is, the fact that I can do it my way and according to my own rules keeps me going. There are days when I love my job and days when I wholeheartedly hate it…but that’s just because Oh Marie! is so dear to me. It is like having a child (I reckon): one day you love it to bits and the other day it makes you scream and pull your hair out.

What has been the best thing about making Oh Marie? It amazes me how many wonderful people contribute to the magazine – all the love, time and enormous effort they put into their articles and photos is astonishing! I would like to take a moment to do an enormous virtual group hug with them! Putting together the magazine with Casper (Boot, our graphic designer) is always like framing all the beautiful images we have made…like putting a cherry on the cake! And of course, styling, taking pictures and thinking of cool new angles to make an article fit a theme…it’s what I love doing the most! All the parents imagine ideal future scenarios for their children. The magazine being your creative love child, what kind of future are you picturing for it? Although the ride has been fab up until now and I’m very proud of what we have achieved in a pretty short time, it is also time to make the magazine (much) more profitable. I want to be able to pay the people that contribute to the mag properly. On top of that, it is sometimes a bit crazy to make a magazine almost all by yourself, and it would be lovely if I had someone who could work fulltime on the PR and Marketing side of Oh Marie!, which is very important to the magazine. That is also the reason why this (baby) break has a great timing: it will give me time to think of new ways to market Oh Marie! Whilst producing the Masterclass Styling, we carried a big pink plastic flamingo around. It seemed to have a life of its own! Last but not least: today is the unbirthday* of Oh Marie, yourself as well as roughly 99% of our readers. How are you going to celebrate? I celebrate this unbirthday by eating all that beautiful pastel coloured candy we used for the Masterclass shoot. And now that I think about it, since this issue has turned out as beautiful as this, I think I’m going to throw an odd tea party! *any day except one’s birthday

Photography In ieder nummer vraagt Oh Marie! een fotograaf zijn of haar lievelingsfoto te analyseren. Lianne vertelt in dit nummer waarom ze persé naar Portugal op vakantie wilde. “Als fotograaf betrap ik mijzelf erop dat ik soms alleen dingen koop om er foto’s van te maken. Het probleem is alleen dat deze dingen steeds groter en duurder worden, zoals vakanties. Een strandlocatie is leuk, maar een absolute voorwaarde is vooral dat je er mooie foto’s kan maken. De bestemmingen die ik aan mij vriend voorleg verbloem ik daarom met mooie verhalen over hotels en warm weer, maar eigenlijk is er maar één reden voor mijn vakantiekeuze: ik ben tijdens mijn omzwervingen op het internet verliefd geworden op die ene foto die een verdwaalde toerist er al eens maakte. Om die reden gingen wij dan ook naar Portugal. De foto die ik gezien had, had echt álles in zich: een enorme boom met prachtige grote bloemen in een heel klein idyllisch straatje met een cafeetje op de achtergrond. Ik was verkocht en dus gingen we op pad naar dat stadje met die prachtige fotolocatie. Ik ben een beetje de reisleider van ons twee en dus in de gelegenheid om de te bezoeken locaties goed aan mijn vriend te verkopen. In dit geval moesten we dan ook naar dit specifieke café om het heerlijke ijs dat er gegeten kon worden. Dat ik er alleen een foto wilde maken, liet ik achterwege. Gaandeweg begon de twijfel echter toe te slaan: straks stond die boom niet in bloei! Of stonden die schattige stoeltjes er niet! Toen we ook al aardig verdwaald waren en bijna op wilden geven, besloten we om aan het eind van een steil straatje nog één keer het hoekje om te kijken. En ineens was daar ‘mijn’ foto. Het beeld was nog mooier dan die van mijn verdwaalde toerist: prachtige, grote bloemen, dat kleine cafeetje en ook nog een zwerfkat op de stoep. Dolgelukkig nam ik mijn foto’s en, als aandenken, vroeg ik mijn vriend er ook nog één van mij bij de boom te maken. “Nog iets opzij!” hoorde ik mijn vriend zeggen. (Ik was onder de indruk van de aandacht die hij in de foto steken wilde.) “Nog iets naar rechts en een klein beetje door je knieën”. Het resultaat? Een foto van mezelf met een parasol die uit mijn hoofd groeit. “Kijk eens! Nu lijkt het net of je een hoedje op hebt!” En zo veranderde het Portugese decor in een super goedkope toeristenfoto. Maar ach, ik had mijn foto en zo ook mijn vriend. Onze vakantie was compleet.” In every issue of Oh Marie! a photographer tells the story behind his or her favourite picture. In this issue, Lianne tells why she had to travel to Portugal to shoot the perfect picture. “As a photographer, I often buy stuff just for the sake of photographing them. There is only one problem: the stuff I buy is getting bigger and more expensive every time. Just like that, I can set my mind on a certain holiday destination just because I fell in love with a photo some lost tourist had taken there. Of course, I hide this by selling the destinations of my choice to my boyfriend with logical reasons like beautiful hotels and fine weather. However, secretly I just want to go visit that little town and so that I can take that perfect photo. For that reason, we traveled to Portugal as well. During my holiday research on the internet, I had bumped into the perfect photograph taken in a small town in Portugal. It had all elements of perfection in it: a massive tree with beautiful big flowers in front of an idyllic little street with the cutest little cafe in the background. The minute I saw it, I was sold. Since I’m the travel agent in our relationship, I’m also an expert in selling the tourist attractions of our destinations to my boyfriend. In this case, I lured him into travelling to this particular café, “because they sold the most delicious ice cream”. Of course, I didn’t tell him that we actually made the trip to the town just for a photo. During our walk through the city, I started doubting my plan. I didn’t know for sure if the tree would be blooming or even if the café would still be there. On top of that, we struggled finding the place! Almost ready to give up, we decided to take one last look around the corner at the end of a very steep street. And there it was: my little café. It was even prettier than the photo of the lost tourist. The tree was in full bloom, the café was still there and there was even a stray cat posing on the pavement. After I had taken my photos, I asked my boyfriend to take a picture of me with the tree, so that I would have a keepsake. “A little more to the left, yes, and now a little lower,” my boyfriend directed. His attention to taking the picture was heartwarming…until I saw the result; a photo of me with a parasol growing out of my head! “It looks like you are wearing it as a hat!” my boyfriend smiled. Just like that, he had changed the beautiful setting into a cheesy tourist picture. Ah well, I got my photo and so did he. Our holiday was complete.” 10

Analoge fotografie voor dummies door Cristian Kiesling De compositie van Lianne’s foto is prachtig: de bloemen zijn rechts van het midden gepositioneerd. De compositie van je foto bepaalt voor een groot deel de uitstraling van je foto. Hoewel het bepalen van de compositie in een foto vaak een inzichtkwestie is, zijn er toch wat technieken die je kunnen helpen om een bepaalde uitstraling te bereiken. Twee belangrijke technieken zijn de gulden snede en de regel van derden. Gulden snede en de regel van derden Zowel de gulden de snede als de regel van derden verdelen het beeld als het ware in delen aan de hand van verschillende verhoudingen. De gulden snede maakt een iets lastiger uit te leggen kader dan de regel van derden: het beeld wordt door middel van twee horizontale en twee verticale lijnen die door een wiskundige berekening in verhouding tot elkaar staan verdeeld. Bij de regel van derden wordt het beeld verdeeld in negen gelijke vlakken. Fotograferen met compositietechniek Er ontstaat zo dus een raster (dat op veel digitale camera’s visueel over het beeld gelegd kan worden) met snijpunten. De bedoeling van de compositietechnieken is dat het te fotograferen onderwerp op deze snijpunten wordt gelegd (of op de lijnen). Maar zelfs deze compositietechnieken vereisen een stukje inzicht, het is namelijk niet te doen om te fotograferen met een liniaal. Als je voor jezelf de compositietechnieken eens tekent op een papier zie je waar de snijpunten zich bevinden en kun je dat gebruiken bij het maken van je foto. Lomography for dummies by Cristian Kiesling Lianne’s photograph shows a beautiful composition in which the flowers are positioned on the right side of the centre. The composition of a photograph partly determines the feeling of a photograph. Although composition often comes from instinct, there are some composition techniques which might help to achieve a certain feeling in a photograph. Two of them are called ‘the golden section’ and ‘the rule of thirds’. Golden section and rule of thirds The golden section as well as the rule of thirds make a certain division within the photograph, based on different ratios. The golden section is based on a difficult mathematical equation, whereas the rule of thirds simply divides the photograph in nine equal parts. Composition techniques in practice Both composition techniques create a grid with lines and intersection points. The purpose is to position your subject in your photograph on such an intersection point (or line). Since photographing and holding a ruler at the same time is a bit hard, you might want to draw these composition techniques on a sheet of paper, so that you know the rough division by heart. Lomography

Lomografie is een interessante en artistieke tak binnen de analoge fotografie. Lomografie is een vrije vorm van fotografie waarbij het niet gaat om een technisch perfecte foto. Juist niet. Je hoeft niet te kijken wat je fotografeert en ook de belichting laat je haar eigen gang gaan. Leuk om eens mee te experimenteren dus! Lomografie bestaat uit een internationale groep van enthousiaste Lomografie fotografen. De geschiedenis van deze artistieke beweging leidt ons naar een groep studenten die in 1992 The Lomographic Society International oprichtten. De naam Lomografie is afgeleid van de Russische Lomo Compact Automaat camera. Lomografie bindt zich niet aan regels voor scherpte, belichting en kader bijvoorbeeld. De enige regels die lomo fotografen wél hanteren zijn de 10 gouden regels binnen Lomografie (je vindt ze onderaan dit artikel). Camera’s Wat ook leuk is aan deze tak in de analoge fotografie is de prijs. Voor 35 euro heb je al een leuke Lomografie camera te pakken, zeker op eBay. Er zijn veel verschillende Lomografie camera’s. Je hebt bijvoorbeeld camera’s met meerdere lenzen (die zorgen voor een leuk kader in je foto), pinhole camera’s of camera’s die standaard panorama’s schieten. De meeste Lomografie camera’s hebben vaste lenzen, maar er zijn ook gave voorzetlenzen te vinden die van je standaard lens bijvoorbeeld een fish-eye lens maken. Films De meeste (en goedkopere) Lomografie camera’s maken gebruik van 35mm film. Lomografie kent daarnaast ook middenformaat camera’s die gebruik maken van 120mm film. Voor Lomografie kun je alle soorten analoge film gebruiken, maar er zijn ook speciale Lomografie films met gave effecten zoals kleurfilters. There are many different types of Lomography cameras, for example cameras with multiple lenses, pinhole cameras or cameras that only shoot panoramic pictures. Most Lomography cameras have non-removable lenses, but can be equipped with nice filters like a fish-eye filter. Film Most of the (cheaper) Lomography cameras use 35mm film. The more advanced cameras use 120mm or 110 film. Actually all kinds of film are suitable for Lomography. However, there is special Lomography film with effects like colour boosts. When you’re using regular analogue film, you can create lomographic effects yourself by only using the film after the shelf life or heating the film for example. Knip vervolgens de cirkels uit en leg ze in een creatieve volgorde neer. Denk hierbij aan de verschillende kleuren en grootte van de cirkels. Naai vervolgens de cirkels aan elkaar. Laat elke keer wat ruimte tussen de cirkels door de naaimachine een aantal steken te laten maken zonder dat er vilt tussen zit. Aan het einde nog wat extra garen overlaten zodat je de slinger gemakkelijk met bijvoorbeeld tape aan de muur kan hangen.

But if I’m not the same, the next question is ‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!” Alice holde achter het witte konijn aan, tuimelde het konijnenhol in en ontdekte daar een heel nieuwe wereld. Of was de wereld hetzelfde maar was zij veranderd? Hoe dan ook, het was er prachtig. En ook jij kunt zo’n mooie wereld thuis creëren! Alice follows the white rabbit down its rabbit hole and discovers a whole new world. But did the world change, or did she? Either way, Wonderland was beautiful. And you can create a beautiful world like that at home, too! 19

Om thuis je eigen Alice-sfeer te creëren, begin je bij het begin: vrij associëren op het thema. Echt? Ja, echt. Niet met zoeken of kopen van spullen? Nee! Als je eerst in het thema duikt, zal je tot de ontdekking komen dat een sfeer op heel veel verschillende manieren kan ontstaan en dat je er ook komt zonder heel specifieke of dure accessoires te gebruiken. Als je hulp nodig hebt bij het krijgen van inspiratie, maak dan op Pinterest een bord en zoek op volgens jou passende beelden bij het thema. Je kan op die manier op het goede denkpad geholpen worden én je geeft, door het selecteren van sfeerbeelden, alvast richting aan jouw eigen invulling aan het thema. Als je zelf zo’n ‘hoekje’ wilt inrichten als op de foto, zorg dan voor eenheid door je te houden aan een beperkt kleurpalet en de gekozen kleuren twee of meerdere keren terug te laten komen in het beeld. (Zie bijvoorbeeld hoe het roze uit de stapel boekjes rechts terugkomt in het vaasje links.) Je houdt je compositie ‘spannend’ door met hoogte te spelen. Stapel een paar boekjes op elkaar of zet mooie bloemen in een vaas. En/of hang iets aan de muur. Beestjes zijn heel geschikt om ‘verhaaltjes’ te maken. Ook dat zorgt ervoor dat het geheel niet saai wordt. Waar zouden de eekhoorn en het konijn daar rechts het over hebben? Of haal een klein grapje uit: zie je het bloemetje op de kop van het konijntje? Het zorgt ervoor dat je steeds met een glimlach naar je eigen kastje kijkt. 20

To create your own Alice themed setting, start with from the beginning by using free association technique on the theme. (Seriously?! Yes, seriously.) When you dive into the theme, you will realize you don’t need to buy (expensive) accessories to create a certain atmosphere for your set or image. If you need help getting in the mood of the theme, start by selecting images on Pinterest that you find fitting for the theme - doing that will get on the right track. Your selection will also show your personal angle for the execution of your project. To create a setting like the one on the cupboard, make sure you choose items that fit a predetermined colour palette – that way, you’ll be creating a nice unity. Let items in the same colour reflect each other. (For example, see how the pink vase on the left reflects the pink booklet in the pile at the right.) Use items with different heights to add variety to the composition and make it more interesting. Use a pile of books, flowers and/or hang something on the wall. Animal figures are perfect for adding little stories and a bit of fun into your set. What are the squirrel and bunny on the right gossiping about? Add a bit of humour to your setting with quirky details: the little flower we put on the head of one of the bunnies makes us smile every time we look at the picture!

The tea party “Take some more tea,” the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly. “I’ve had nothing yet,” Alice replied in an offended tone, “so I can’t take more.” “You mean you can’t take less,” said the Hatter: “it’s very easy to take more than nothing.” Na de bizarre ontmoeting met de Cheshire Cat liep Alice verder door het fantastische Wonderland, waar ze uiteindelijk terecht kwam op het meest vreemde theekransje dat ze ooit gezien had... After her bizarre meeting with the Cheshire Cat, Alice wanders through fantastic Wonderland. She stumbles upon the maddest tea party she ever saw…

Wees gerust, we zullen je niet als tip geven dat je een zak snoep over je tafel heen moet gooien...! Maar denk in kleuren en vormen om een sfeer neer te zetten. Zoete kleuren, hartjes en bloemige vormen passen goed bij Alice. Gebruik je veel accessoires op je tafel? Zorg voor een ondergrond met effen kleuren. Houd je je opstelling eenvoudig, dan kun je kiezen voor een geborduurd tafellaken of een servet of tafelloper met een patroontje. Denk ook eens aan een stuk behang of een geschilderd plankje als ondergrond! Bloemig servies met grillige lijnen en gouden randjes zijn zó Alice. Met een paar kopjes of een mooie theepot, gecombineerd met een paar snoepjes, wat speelkaarten of een bijpassend bloemetje zet je heel eenvoudig een Alice tafereeltje op je tafel. Kijk voor kopjes of schoteltjes in de kast van je oma / moeder / gepensioneerde buurvrouw of natuurlijk bij de kringloop. Natuurlijk verwachten we niet dat je een grote roze flamingo in huis haalt, maar - heel eerlijk - we kunnen het iedereen aanraden!

Don’t fret: we won’t advise you to spread out large amounts of candy over your dinner table. Do think about colours and shapes when creating that atmosphere in your set though. Soft pastels, hearts and flowery shapes fit the Alice theme perfectly. Do you want to use a lot of different elements in your set? Use solid colours as a background then. Use embroidered or patterned sheets or (wall)paper if you choose to work with a small amount of accessories in your set. Flowery tableware with golden details are so very Alice! We created this Alice setting with just a couple of cups, a teapot, a deck of cards and pastel coloured candy..you can do that too! Look for beautiful cups and plates in your granny’s/neighbors’/ mother’s kitchen cabinets or at thrift shops. Of course, we don’t expect you to buy yourself a big pink plastic flamingo, although we can surely recommend it!

Paint the roses red “Would you tell me, please,” said Alice, a little timidly, “why you are painting those roses?” “Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose-tree and we put a white one in by mistake, and if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know.”

Eenmaal bij de Hartenkoningin aangekomen, stonden Alice weer ogenschijnlijk onmogelijke dingen te wachten. Mannen die eruit zien als speelkaarten die witte rozen rood schilderen. Een potje ‘croquet’ met egels als ballen en flamingo’s als sticks. Wat een kleurrijke droom! Of is het geen droom...? When she arrives at the Queen of Hearts’ castle, Alice stumbles upon more alienating scenes. Living playing cards that paint white roses red. Live flamingos that are used as mallets and hedgehogs as balls to play croquet…what a strange dream! But…is it a dream?

Kleine moeite, groot effect. Daar houden we van! Behang is een geweldig materiaal om snel een sfeer neer te zetten. Gaat een hele muur behangen je te ver? Zoek een lijst die bij je thema past en lijst een stuk behang in. Zet de lijst op een kastje, een tafel of op de grond en bouw je compositie ervoor. Voilà! In de foto gebruikten we drie wel heel verschillende behangetjes, van rustig tot druk en van traditioneel tot modern. Die combineerden we met waarschijnlijk de kleurrijkste bos bloemen die je ooit zag. En toch is het een eenheid. Dat bereik je door het invoeren van een stabiele factor: in dit geval de kleur roze. En zie je hoe Nikki’s prachtige blauwe ogen weer terugkomen in de blauwe bloemen? Ook hier reflecteren de kleuren elkaar weer. Let, tot slot, ook op de details bij de uitwerking van een beeld: zo ‘vlochten’ we de lintjes van de bos bloemen door Nikki’s handen en staken een vogeltje en bloemen in haar opgestoken haar. Uitgewerkte details zorgen dat je niet snel uitgekeken raakt op welk beeld dan ook! Small gesture, big effect. That’s how we like it! Wallpaper is a great and easy material to make a spectacular backdrop with. You don’t need to paper a whole wall, you can also put a piece of paper in a (theme-fitting) frame or just mount pieces of paper to a wall with tape (like we did). For this photo we used a wide divergence of patterns for the background and the most colourful bunch of flowers possible. Still, there’s unity in this image. We established this unity by adding one recurring factor to this set: the colour pink. And see how beautiful Nikki’s eyes match the blue flowers. They reflect each other! Pay attention to every detail, no matter how small. We twined the ribbon around the flowers through Nikki’s hands and added fake flowers and a bird to her hair. Well thought-out details make your image interesting, it will make you want to look at it time and time again! 27

Pencils, skirts and pencil skirts

“I’d like to wear things that are a bit more classy, a bit more mature,” I said. “Yea, me too,” my friend replied. She was wearing her boyfriend’s jogging pants, whilst I wore a sloppy T-shirt with a funny print. Both of us sighed. Later on, I started wondering what I had really meant. What exactly is “classy” or “more mature”? I turned to my dear old friend, Google. ‘Classy’ brought me Audrey Hepburn in a little black dress, and ‘mature‘ threw Meryl Streep and her pencil skirt in my face. Erm….not exactly what my sartorial soul was longing for. Classic style, as fashion knows it, is typically made of timeless basics: jeans, trench coats, A-line skirts and such. Also the colour black tends to give clothes a classy flair with its simplicity. I know this all too well - for years, I was obsessed with colourless this and that, because black was such an easy choice. However, when I hung out with my friends, who were like the fireworks of fashion in their playful outfits, my own attire made me yawn. I have also had a fling with the so-called classic smart casuals: straight pants, slipovers, white blouses and black heels. Long story short; none of it worked. I am not a serious office kind of a girl with pearls, neither am I a monotonous minimalist. In fact, just thinking about classic items or the ever so smart wardrobe essentials gives me an urge to sit up straight, cross my legs and raise my pinkie ready to grab a glass of wine. However, the truth is that I spend majority of my time sitting in less than ladylike positions, snortling at stupid jokes, tinkering on the floor and drinking tea from a chunky mug that is a far cry from any kind of elegance. Conclusion: the answer to my longing for classiness won’t be found in pencil skirts, but in something that lets me be me without having to be afraid of breaking seams or smudging fine silk. Magazines keep on praising wardrobe essentials in their collages, but it’s better to think twice before you swallow everything they say. Fashion classics might be universal, but classics of personal style are very subjective. The rebel inside me has come to believe that you can be classy without owning a trench coat or a pair of straight pants. In fact, your classics can be anything you like as long as they make it easy for you to build the rest of your uniform around them. Pencil skirts are fine, but if you prefer keeping your pencils and skirts apart, that’s perfectly fine, too! Flourescent colours and plastic necklaces can be just as essential to you as belted coats are to Vogue. After running these thoughts through my mind, I might say goodbye to my pyjama worthy T-shirts and pursue something more pleasing to my eye. However, I won’t ditch all my printed tees. Why? Because just as there are days when I would like to have a graceful flair, there will also be days when a bit of funny, printed sloppiness will sooth me like nothing else. Perfect classysloppy balance – that’s what’s essential to me! Besides, isn’t there enough of Serious Suit Mentality in the world already? 29

Schatg Treasurehunting.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Matchy-matchy vind ik oersaai!â&#x20AC;?

Na 4,5 jaar als visual merchandiser bij Vanilia te hebben gewerkt, timmert Liesbeth nu hard aan haar eigen stylingbedrijf. Ze woont samen met haar zoon en dochter in een prachtig ingerichte galerijflat op de 6e etage in Alkmaar. Ze vertelt over haar stijl, interieurschatten en Buurman en Buurman kast.

Hoe zou je je eigen stijl omschrijven? Mijn stijl zou ik omschrijven als een fijne mismatch van vintage, nieuw en een snufje design. Prachtig hoe je hele verschillende stijlen met elkaar combineert! Hoe voeg je die zo succesvol samen? Ik werk heel erg vanuit mijn gevoel en hou ervan als dingen elkaar “bijten”: niet bij elkaar passen dus. Te matchy-matchy vind ik oersaai! Dingen versterken elkaar als ze compleet tegengesteld zijn. Ik zet graag iets straks naast iets romantisch of design naast kringloopvondsten. Ik denk ook dat een ruimte een bepaalde leegheid nodig heeft om de spullen goed tot hun recht te laten komen. Lege hoeken en lege vensterbanken bijvoorbeeld. Op welke manier past dit interieur bij je persoonlijkheid en bij je gezin? Ik hou van tegenstellingen en anders, niet van standaard. Als stylist ben je natuurlijk ook altijd op zoek naar die andere invalshoek. Verder ben ik heel gelukkig opgegroeid in de jaren ’70. De retro spullen die ik in de kringloopwinkels vind geven mij een warm gevoel van thuiskomen. Maar, ik heb ook een onbedwingbare hang naar nieuw, raak snel verveeld en wil altijd visueel geprikkeld worden. Ik denk dat we daar thuis allemaal een beetje last van hebben. Altijd op zoek naar iets anders maar ook gehecht aan bepaalde dingen. Wat is je meest geliefde interieuritem en hoe kwam je eraan? Ik heb er eigenlijk twee. Allereerst het drankencabinetje van de kringloop dat ik voor 40 euro op de kop tikte. In de toekomst wil ik daar graag nog vintage karaffen met sterke drank en mooie vintage glaasjes inzetten, het lijkt mij zo leuk om op feestjes en dineetjes ouderwetsch een drankje voor mijn gasten in te schenken. En daarnaast het beeldje van het meisje in de prachtige zomerjurk. Alles aan het beeldje vind ik mooi, haar jurk, haar haar, haar sierlijke houding en vooral de kleuren. Het stond vroeger bij mijn oma op de kast en ik ben als klein meisje direct verliefd geworden op haar verschijning. Toen mijn oma vorig jaar overleed heb ik haar van mijn moeder gekregen en sindsdien heeft ze een ereplaatsje bij mij thuis. Wat is je grootste misstap, interieurwijs gezien? Maak ons bang! Haha, dat móet mijn Buurman en Buurman kast zijn. Vol enthousiasme dacht ik wel even een kamerhoge kast van OSB hout te maken. Ik had tenslotte al vaker wat geknutseld dus dit was a piece of cake!… NOT!! Gaandeweg het proces ging er steeds meer mis en moest ik steeds gekkere oplossingen bedenken om de boel een beetje bij elkaar te houden. Bij het laatste deurtje riep ik keihard: “Ajeto! Niets meer aan doen!” Ooit doe ik een dappere tweede poging!

“Matchy-matchy is terribly dull!”

After working for 4.5 years as a visual merchandiser, Liesbeth started to focus on her styling business. Together with her son and daughter she lives in a beautifully decorated flat in Alkmaar. She tells about her style, interior treasures and her Pat & Mat cupboard. How would you describe your style? As a nice mismatch of vintage, new and here and there a bit of design. We love how you matched totally different styles together! How do you make that work? I work very intuitively and I like it when things ‘bite’ each other: that they don’t seem to go hand in hand together at first sight. Matchymatchy is boring, opposites attract. I combine simple with romantic designs or design with second hand finds. I also think a (living) space needs a certain kind of emptiness to do justice to its contents. That’s why I left corners and window-sills empty here. In what way does this interior fit your personality and your family? I’ve always had a love for the off-beat and whimsical and as a stylist I’m always on the lookout for that different styling angle. I was born and raised in a very happy 70s family so retro thriftfinds always give me a warm sense of homecoming. On the other hand, I have an inexhaustible thirst for new things and visual stimuli and I am pretty easily bored. These are defining characteristics in my family. We’re always on the lookout for something different while also being heavily attached to certain things. What is your most loved interior item and where did you get it? There are actually two items l love most. For once there’s the vintage liquor cabinet I bought for 40 euros at a thriftshop. One day I’m going to fill it with vintage carafes and beautiful vintage glasses. I love the idea of serving alcoholic beverages at dinner parties in a beautiful old-skool way! Second, there’s the statue of the girl in summer dress. I love everything about her: her dress, her hair, her form and colour. It belonged to my grandmother and I have loved it ever since I was little. When my grandmother passed away last year, my mother gave it to me as a present. She’s had a place of honour in my home ever since. What has been your biggest interior misstep, feel free to scare us? Haha! That must be the Pat & Mat cupboard in the living room. I really thought I could make a huge OSB cupboard on a whim. Especially since I’m quite a handyperson, I really thought making it would be a piece of cake…NOT! Along the making process I had to come up with crazier tricks to keep the thing together. When I’d arrived at the final door I yelled: “Ajeto! Let’s step back slowly and keep it this way!” One day I’ll give it another brave shot…one day….! 38
