Onze buren denken dat wij een drankprobleem hebben.

Dat zit namelijk zo. Mijn lief en ik hebben, op z’n zachtst gezegd, een hekel aan het wegbrengen van het oude glas. Terwijl we, áls we het wegbrengen, iedere keer weer vaststellen dat het best een fijne vorm van stressreductie is: het gecontroleerd kapot gooien van flessen zonder dat je erna de scherven hoeft op te ruimen. Maar om dus terug te komen bij dat drankprobleem: de winter is bij uitstek de tijd voor Port, rode wijn of Glühwein en ook al drink je hooguit drie glazen per week, als je dat lang genoeg opspaart dan krijg je een flessenvoorraad die iedere vorm van stress als sneeuw voor de zon zou kunnen doen verdwijnen (áls je het tenminste in de glasbak gooit). Met andere woorden: een verzameling die de hele kofferbak van je auto kan vullen. (Nu is de maat van onze auto bescheiden, maar het is net als een te grote bank in een te kleine woonkamer: het lijkt alleen maar sneller vol te zijn.) Ik zal de uitdrukking op het gezicht van onze buurman nooit vergeten toen ie zag wat wij in stonden te laden. De volgende keer moeten we dat maar ’s nachts doen. Of wachten tot ze op vakantie zijn.

De tijd voor het vergaren van de grootste oud glas verzameling en het choqueren van de buren is weer aangebroken. De tijd waarin je regelmatig aan je hoofd voelt of je je zonnebril nog op hebt om je je erna te realiseren dat het gewoon alweer donker is buiten. De tijd die een vriendin van mij de ‘mollentijd’ noemt, waarna ze een vies gezicht trekt. Niet nodig om te vermelden dat zij een zomermens is, de stakker.

Dit nummer gaat over de winter. En dat je ondanks de duisternis echt niet meteen naar de fles hoeft te grijpen of in een depressie hoeft weg te zakken. In plaats daarvan kan je beter een gestoofde perentaart bakken. Of lezen dat de Noren het met winters van -35 en drie uur zonlicht op een dag véél zwaarder hebben, of leren op welke manier je van lelijke Sint- of Kerstcadeaus af kan raken. Wij helpen je die winter wel door.

Mocht je trouwens een cursusleider stressreductie kennen die geïnteresseerd is in een grote verzameling oud glas, laat het ons weten.

Ergens in het voorjaar heb ik wel weer een partijtje liggen.

Our neighbors think we have a drinking problem.

The case is this. My Love and I both hate to bring our waste glass to the glass collection point. And in spite of the fact that when we do it, we both agree it’s a great stress reducing task since you can break dozens of bottles without having to clean up the mess afterwards, we still don’t do it very often. Almost never in fact. To get to the drinking problem: winter is the best time to drink Port, red wine or Glühwein and unless you drink a bottle per night, there is, in fact no problem at all. The problem arises when you collect all those empty bottles for, let’s say, almost a year and you bring them to a collection point all in one time. You’ll have a collection that will reduce any kind of stress immediately, that’s a thing for sure, but if at that particular moment your poor neighbor sees you stuff your car with boxes filled with empty bottles, he might start to think you have a bit of a problem. In the worst case he calls neighborhood watch. In our case, he just started to avoid us. Next time, we’ll tackle this problem by loading the car when they’re on holiday. Or when it’s dark outside.

Speaking of darkness: it’s that time of year again when we can start building that empty bottle collection and shock our neighbors. In the next couple of months you will find yourself padding your face now and then thinking “Now, did I leave my sunglasses on or what?” when you realize it’s just already dark again. It’s the time a friend of mine calls ‘the time of the moles’ followed by a dirty face. Needless to say she’s a summer person, the poor thing.

This issue is all about winter and that you, in spite of the darkness, don’t need an alcohol addiction or an episode of winter depression to get through it. Instead, we give you the recipe of a poached pear tart, to get you through the day. You will also learn why our winters aren’t that horrific compared to the ones the Norwegians have each year. Or how to deal with ugly holiday presents. We’ll get you through it, I promise.

PhotOgraphy In ieder nummer vraagt Oh Marie! een fotograaf met een voorliefde voor analoge fotografie zijn of haar lievelingsfoto te analyseren. In dit nummer vertelt Anki over het blauwe uur waarop ze deze winterfoto’s nam.

Analoge fotografie heeft mij hart. Analoge foto's zijn puur en ze hebben nauwelijks bewerking nodig. Ik vind dat ze een bepaalde zachtheid hebben, een sfeer die me ontzettend aanspreekt. Deze foto maakte ik met mijn Nikon FE, mijn favoriete camera aller tijden, net zo oud als ik zelf ben. Ik maakte de foto's tijdens de schemering, aan het eind van een winterdag. Die periode wordt vaak het blauwe uur genoemd, omdat de lucht een wat blauwige kleur krijgt. Eigenlijk is er niet genoeg licht meer om zonder flits te fotograferen en juist dat levert interessant, sfeervol beeld op. Deze foto's ademen de winter, vind ik. Als ik ernaar kijk, weet ik weer precies hoe koud het toen was en hoe ik me voelde. Dat is wat een goede foto met je doet: je terugbrengen in de sfeer van dat bepaalde moment.

There's a special place in my heart for analog photography. I love the purity of analog photo's. They hardly need editing and there's a certain softness in every analog picture that really touches me.

I took this photo with my favorite camera, the Nikon FE. This camera and I are the same age. I took this photo's during twilight, on a cold winter's day. There was barely enough light to shoot. The pictures have a slightly blue tone because of the lack of light, which gives them an atmospheric look. For me, this photo's depict what winter is about. When I look at them, I remember the cold and I know exactly where I was and how I felt on that particular day. Analoge fotografie voor dummies door Cristian Kiesling De foto’s van Anki zijn gemaakt tijdens het zogeheten ‘blauwe uur’. Het blauwe uur komt twee keer voor op een dag: ’s ochtends net voor de zon opkomt en ’s avonds vlak na zonsondergang. In tegenstelling tot het gouden uur (het moment nadat de zon is opgekomen en voordat deze weer ondergaat – zie Oh Marie! #5) neemt de lucht tijdens het blauwe uur een blauwe kleur aan. Zowel het blauwe uur ‘s ochtends als ‘s avonds biedt een mooie setting voor je foto’s, maar toch zijn er wat praktische verschillen.

Het blauwe uur hangt, net zoals het gouden uur, af van je locatie, de datum en de weersomstandigheden. Nederland heeft een gunstige ligging dat ervoor zorgt dat we een relatief lang blauw uur hebben. Dat betekent echter niet dat het meer dan uur duurt: eerder rond de 10 minuten. Het blauwe uur wordt vaak benut voor het fotograferen van architectuur of landschappen, maar kan veel vaker een speciale tint geven aan je foto, zoals bij macrofotografie. De blauwe gloed biedt een duidelijk contrast tussen onderwerp en achtergrond en vaak is de lucht mooi egaal of bestaat deze uit een perfect verloop (een ombré effect).

Het blauwe uur ’s avonds biedt voor vooral stedelijke fotografie een voordeel en een nadeel ten opzichte van het blauwe uur ‘s ochtends.

Waar de gebouwen ’s avonds zelf donker zijn, is de lucht nog niet helemaal donker en blijft het silhouet van het gebouw zichtbaar.

Binnenverlichting is echter vaak alleen tijdens het blauwe uur in de avond aan, wat een extra (licht) effect aan de foto geven kan.

Daarentegen is het ’s avonds drukker op straat, in tegenstelling tot het blauwe uur in de ochtend. Als je een foto maken wil zonder mensenmassa’s erop, kies dan voor het blauwe uur in de ochtend.

Lomography for dummies by Cristian Kiesling Anki’s pictures are made during the so-called ‘blue hour’. The blue hour is the period just before sunrise in the morning and just after sunset in the evening. In contrast to the golden hour (the period after sunrise and before sunset – see also Oh Marie! #5), the sky turns blue during the blue hour. There is neither full daylight nor complete darkness. Both the morning and evening blue hours offer great settings to photograph. There are some practical differences though.

The moment of blue hour depends, just like the golden hour, on your location, the date and the weather conditions. The Netherlands have a favourable situation which results in a relatively long blue hour. Nevertheless, the blue hour will only last for about 10 minutes.

The blue hour is often used to photograph architecture or landscapes, but offers many more possibilities for macro photography for example. The blue glow brings great contrast between subject and background. The blue in the sky often is quite even during the blue hour, or consists out of a perfect gradient.

The blue hour during the evening brings both an advantage and a disadvantage in comparison to the blue hour during the morning.

Whereas many indoor lights are only on during the period in the evening, these brighter areas can give a photo a special effect. On the other hand, the streets are calmer during the morning, which makes it the perfect moment to shoot pictures without of people on ‘em.

De steken die je gebruikt zijn:

l: losse

ch = chain

v: vast hv: halve vaste

ea = each rep = repeat sc = single crochet

Ik heb twee draden in verschillende kleuren gebruikt voor de beaniebag, dus deze twee kleuren haakte ik samen.

sl st = slip stitch st = stich

Haak 4 l en sluit met een hv in de 1e l Toer 1: Haak in elke l 2 v (8v) Toer 2: Haak in elke v 2 v (16v)

Use double yarn in different colours.

Toer 3: Haak een v in 1e v, daarna 2v in volg v, herhaal tot einde toer (24v in totaal) Toer 4: Haak een v in de volg 2v, daarna 2v in volg v. Herhaal tot einde toer (32v in totaal)

Toer 5: Haak een v in de volg 3v, daarna 2v in volg v. Herhaal tot einde toer (40v in totaal) Als je wilt kun je daarna toeren haken vasten haken zonder te meerderen, maar ik heb nog een toer 6 en 7 gehaakt, waardoor de beaniebag iets groter wordt.

Make as many rounds as you like until the beanie bag has your desired length.

Finishing the beanie: Cut the yarn, leaving about 6 inches for weaving in securely. Fasten the yarn and finish off by weaving in any loose ends.

Daarna haak je toeren zonder te meerderen. Maak de beaniebag zo lang als je wilt!.

Anja Mulder maakt foto’s van verstilde verzamelingen Een paar jaar geleden ben ik begonnen met het fotograferen van de collecties of verzamelingen die ik maak. Ik merkte dat, als je gewone voorwerpen bij elkaar legt en rangschikt, een verzameling er opeens bijzonder uit ziet. Door er een foto van te maken, schep je als het ware je eigen herinnering aan een moment.

De voorwerpen die ik gebruik in mijn collectiefoto's kunnen van alles zijn; schedels van beesten, schelpen, stukjes hout, papiersoorten, een tekstflart uit een gedicht of liedje...

Ik leg de boel op tafel, rangschik een tijdje en maak een foto als 'het klopt'. Het klopt als er evenwicht in een plaatje zit, een soort rust. De kleuren en vormen moeten bij elkaar passen en als het licht en de scherpte goed zijn, is de foto snel gemaakt.

De meeste collecties ontstaan vanzelf, omdat ik het leuk vind om te doen. Er staan er inmiddels heel wat op mijn blog.

Terugkijkend, vormen de foto's een soort dagboek door de tijd.

Sommige voorwerpen staan symbool voor het een of ander, andere legsels passen vooral in het moment, heel diepgaand hoeft het niet te zijn.

Naast de autonome collecties die je terugziet op mijn blog, maak ik ook verzamelingen in opdracht. Ik heb pas geleden bijvoorbeeld een foto gemaakt voor de cover van een roman van een Amerikaanse uitgever. Daarvoor kreeg ik twee grote dozen vol meuk opgestuurd uit de US. Alle voorwerpen in de dozen hadden een link met het leven en verhaal van de hoofdpersoon uit het boek. Of ik daar een collectie uit wilde samenstellen.

Geen probleem, laat mij maar puzzelen.

Op festivals als Noorderzon en Here Comes The Summer heb ik workshops gegeven in het scheppen van collecties/verzamelingen. Mensen maakten o.a. een verzameling van spullen die ze toevallig bij zich droegen. Het resultaat drukten we als herinnering op een ansichtkaart.

Anja Mulder takes images of the ordinary A couple of years ago I started to photograph (parts of) the collections I keep. I noticed that, when put together and arranged, ordinary objects start to look extraordinary. By taking a picture of an arrangement, in a way I also create my own memory of that particular moment.

The objects that I use for my photos are pretty random. I use animal skulls, shells, bits of wood, shreds of paper, a few lines from a poem or song... I put them on the table, move them around for a while and take a picture when the image looks right.

An image that’s right has some kind of balance in it, a kind of peaceful feel. Colours and shapes should mirror each other and once the light and sharpness are right, I take the picture.

Beside the autonomous work that’s on my blog, I also create commissioned collections. I recently designed a cover for an U.S. publisher, for instance. They sent me a box filled with junk, all its contents had something to do with the book’s protagonist. If I wanted to make something out of that junk? Of course, let me solve that puzzle, it’s what I love to do!

Because I love to curate my collections, they often develop gradually. Over time I posted a lot them on my blog. Looking back, these pictures almost became some kind of diary. Some collections are a symbolization of this or that, other arrangements just fitted the moment, their meaning doesn’t always have to be very deep or profound.

On festivals like Noorderzon and Here Comes The Summer I hosted workshops in which I learned participants how to create their own collections using just the things they carried that day.

Het weer die tijd van het jaar dat het oké is om te lunchen met een Speculaaspop en hysterisch veel kerstlampjes op te hangen zonder de discussie te hoeven te voeren of het niet te vroeg is voor hysterische decoratie of lampjes. Het is ook de tijd van het jaar van de (bijna kansloze) missie van het uitzoeken van het perfecte cadeau voor je broers/zussen/moeders/vaders/hond/vrienden/neven of nichten. Het is, kortom, het seizoen van de gezelligheid, de cadeaus, de (glim)lach en, helaas ook, de geforceerde grijns: “Gohhh, tante Julia, dat is….eh…gaaf zeg. Bedankt.” Na alle december feestvreugde zit je traditiegetrouw opgezadeld met een collectie ongewenste cadeaus die zijn weerga niet kent. Laat je echter niet terneerslaan door deze miskleunen, de volgende wijsheden zullen je helpen discreet met de hele situatie om te gaan.

It’s that time of the year, when it is okay to have gingerbread for lunch and put up as many Christmas lights as we want without having to argue about how early is too early to bring out the decorations. It’s the time of the year, when we must again face the Mission (Almost) Impossible of making sure that our brothers, mothers, sisters, fathers, dogs, friends and cousins will all get a fair share of joy wrapped in colourful papers. The season is filled with cozy get-togethers around the Christmas tree, moments of laughter and many smiles, but also a few forced grins. “Gee, Auntie, this is...erm...awesome. Thanks.” Yet another December passes and a new assortment of misfit gifts will be dumped to the back of your closet. But don’t let that pile of unwanted gifts make you sink into despair, for here are a few wisdoms to help you deal with the situation discreetly.

1. Over smaak valt niet te twisten. Wees niet bang om die collectie mislukkelingen tentoon te stellen. Maak foto’s van ze en show deze aan vrienden wanneer ze vragen naar jouw feestdagen. Nog beter: zet ze op je blog als je er een hebt! Op het moment dat er ook maar iemand een compliment geeft over die fantastische glittersjaal die jij té lelijk vindt, weet jij wat diegene voor zijn verjaardag gaat krijgen dit jaar. Zo wordt het ongewenste cadeau gewenst en geeft het plezier van het geven de hele betekenis van het woord ‘opruimen’ een geheel nieuwe dimensie.

2. In nood leert men zijn vrienden en diens ongewenste cadeauvoorraad kennen. Als je vriend op de stoep staat met ijskoude vingers, dan móet je diegene helpen door die obscure, scheef gebreide trui om zijn handen te wikkelen. “Draag maar op de weg terug naar huis, het zal je handen lekker warmhouden. Nee, nee, je hoeft ‘m niet terug te brengen, hou ‘m maar, echt!” Een ongewenst cadeau minder, een vriend meer.

Klassieke win-win situatie!

3. Als Sint of de Kerstman je citroenen geeft, maak citroenlimonade. Een muts die je goed had gestaan als je 10 was geweest?

Doet het goed als theemuts! Teveel wollen sokken gekregen?

Nodig je vrienden uit voor een ‘Pimp je sokken’ feest. Customize ze met parels, lintjes en knopen en laat iedereen zijn nieuwe paar sokken lekker mee naar huis nemen als aandenken. Een T-shirt dat voor geen meter zit? Knip de mouwen eraf, naai de onderkant dicht en voilà, je hebt een tas om je groenten mee te vervoeren. Het zal die uien niet schelen en zolang je ‘m uit het zicht houdt, je tante ook niet!

4. Elke prulletje verdient een kans. Ook al zal je niet van een ongewenst cadeau houden zoals van Mr. Right, het heeft wellicht de potentie om Mr. Right Now te worden. Een lelijke broek kan uitkomst bieden als je een muur moet verven, die rare pluchen hoed is perfect voor die vakantie naar Siberië of om de sneeuwpop mee aan te kleden. Onze smaak verandert daarnaast ook, dus doe de minder lelijke ongewenste cadeaus niet meteen weg. Wellicht dat je er met de tijd nog eens een toepassing voor vindt en anders kan je het, in het uiterste geval, wellicht nog gebruiken voor Halloween.

5. Niet het cadeau, maar de gedachte erachter telt. Maar, denk daar niet te lang over na. Tref voorzorgsmaatregelen en voorkom ongewenste cadeaus. Schrijf een brief aan Sinterklaas of de Kerstman (ergo: je familieleden) en help ze om vér te blijven van dat wanhopige moment, één dag voor die feestdag, waarop ze nog “iets…wat dan ook!” voor je moeten kopen. Een waardebon voor een avond pannenkoeken bakken kan overigens ook heel waardevol zijn en is een betere optie dan een porseleinen hondje, tenzij de ontvanger ervan daar nadrukkelijk om gevraagd heeft.

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Don’t be ashamed to show off your collection of misfit gifts. Snap photos of them and let them steal the limelight whenever talking about what you got for Christmas. Heck, post them on your blog if you have one! The minute someone pays a compliment to that great, glittery scarf that you aren’t particularly fond of, you know what they will get for their birthday. The unwanted gift becomes an appreciated present, and the joy of giving takes decluttering your closet to a whole new level.

2. A friend in need is a friend with an unwanted gift indeed.

When someone arrives at your door with ice-cold fingers, what would be a better way to help them warm up than wrapping them into that questionably swanky yet warm pullover? “Just wear it on your way back home, it will keep you comfy. No, no need to bring it back, just keep it. Really.” One misfit gift less, another happy friend more - a win-win situation!

3. When Santa gives you lemons, make lemonade. A hat that would have been cute on your 10-year-old self? Repurpose and make it into a teapot warmer! Got too many pairs of woollen socks? Invite your friends over for a wintery “Pimp Your Socks” party. Customize the foot warmers with pearls, ribbons and trinkets, and let your guests bring their pieces of art home as memories! A T-shirt that doesn’t fit? Cut out the sleeves, sew the bottom and voilà, you have a bag for your veggies! Onions won’t mind, and as long as you keep them inside your cupboard, your auntie won’t either!

4. Every little knick-knack deserves a chance. Although misfit gifts might not be loved like Mr. Rights, they could end up becoming Mr. Right Nows. An ugly pair of pants might solve your problem of trying to find clothes for painting the walls, and an odd, furry hat could be perfect for a holiday in Siberia or accessorizing a snowman. Our likings are also bound to change, so if your misfit items are not horrid beyond comprehension, keep them for a while - by time, you might find use even for the most useless things, and if not elsewhere, then at least at a Halloween party!

5. It’s the thought that counts, but don’t overwork your brain.

Take preventive measures to avoid well-meant misfires. Write letters to Santa (and your relatives) and help your loved ones to keep away from the desperation of trying to find “something…anything!” on the day before the celebrations. Nonphysical gifts, vouchers and promises to make pancakes upon request can be just as valuable as any present, and are definitely better options than a porcelain dog – unless, of course, someone really wished for it.

Een winterse taart met stoofpeertjes A wintery poached pear tart Ingrediënten voor 12 personen

Makes 10 to 12 servings

Stoofpeertjes

Poached pears

-

- 12 pears, peeled but with stem (for this recipe Femke used Dutch Gieser Wildeman stewing pears, sturdy Bartletts will do the trick too) - 750 ml red wine - 2 cinnamon sticks - 300 grams of sugar - zest of half a lemon

750 ml rode wijn 2 kaneelstokjes rasp van een 1/2 citroen 12 Gieser Wildeman peren, heel, geschild, met steeltje er nog aan - 300 gr suiker Doe de rode wijn in een grote pan en breng aan de kook.

Zet het vuur lager en voeg de kaneelstokjes en citroenrasp toe en laat zachtjes 5 minuten koken. Voeg de peertjes en de suiker toe. Doe de deksel schuin op de pan en laat op laag vuur zachtjes 1 tot 1,5 uur koken tot de peertjes zacht zijn. Giet het vocht af en laat ze afkoelen.

Taartbeslag 200 gram boter, zacht geroerd 200 gram rietsuiker 4 grote vrije-uitloop- of biologische eieren 200 gram zelfrijzend bakmeel Verwarm de oven voor op 180 graden.

Klop voor het beslag de boter en suiker met een houten lepel tot een luchtig mengsel.

Voeg 1 voor 1 de eieren toe en klop elk ei goed door het mengsel voor je het volgende ei toevoegt. Spatel vervolgens het zelfrijzend bakmeel door het beslag. Schep de helft van het beslag in een ronde, ingevette ovenschaal of springvorm met een doorsnede van 24 centimeter. Snij de peertjes doormidden, verwijder de klokhuizen en leg 6 halve peertjes op het beslag, druk ze licht naar beneden.

Giet de rest van beslag in de vorm en spreid er de rest van de peertjes over uit.

Zet de springvorm 40 minuten in een voorverwarmde oven, of totdat de taart mooi goudbruin en gerezen is. Om te controleren of de cake gaar is, kun je een prikker of de punt van een mes in het midden van de taart steken, als er geen beslag kleeft aan je prikker of mes, dan is de taart klaar. Serveer de taart lauwwarm of koud met lichtgezoete lobbig geklopte slagroom of met zure room.

Heat the red wine until it boils. Add cinnamon sticks and lemon zest and let it reduce for 5 minutes at medium-high heat. Add pears and the sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook gently up to 1 to 1 1/2 hours, until they're completely soft and deep red in colour. Pour off and allow pears to cool.

Tart pastry 200 grams all-purpose flour 200 grams of sugar 200 grams of unsalted butter, at room temperature 4 large biological eggs Preheat oven to 180 C. Whisk with a wooden spoon butter and sugar gently into a light mixture.

Add eggs one by one, make sure each one is properly whisked through the mixture before you add another one. Fold in the flour until smooth. Line a round buttered tart tin (ø 24 cm/9.45 inches) with (about half of) the pastry. Cut the pears in half, remove their cores. Place six half pears onto the pastry, pressing them slightly into it.

Pour the remaining pastry over the pears. Place the rest of the pears in a circular pattern over the mixture.

Bake about 40 minutes in a pre-heated oven, until the top and edges of the cake are golden brown and a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (test several spots because you may hit a pear). This pear tart is delicious and also quite easy to do with a readymade pastry. Serve it warm or cold with a spoonful of cream or crème fraiche.

“IK KREEG ALLERGIEAANVALLEN VAN DE KRINGLOOP”

Eefje woont samen

met Yusuf, hond Luz en

Lola de kat in een licht en

vrolijk huis uit 1928, net buiten

het stadscentrum van Tilburg. Met de

jaren zijn de oude details voor het grootste gedeelte uit de woning verdwenen, op het

spectaculaire glas-in-lood raam boven en de

welvingen in de trapopgang na. Niet dat dat veel

uitmaakt, het huis is licht en de wijk voelt als een dorp

middenin de stad. Eefje: “We dromen vooralsnog vooral van een

grotere tuin: dat zou ruimte voor een moestuin betekenen, plek voor

kippen en o, dan ook graag een geit en een pony. Misschien is een boerderij

nog wel een betere optie. Ik heb een fascinatie voor dieren, ze komen overal

terug in mijn interieur. De poedellamp, posters met dieren en hertenbeeldjes doen

het dan ook altijd goed. En niet te vergeten de vissoepterrine van Pols Potten die Yusuf heel lelijk vindt en die hij op elk feestje probeert weg te geven aan de visite.”

Eefje en Yusuf verwachten hun eerste kindje, een meisje, in januari 2014. Het interieur is momenteel dan ook sterk onderhevig aan Eefje’s opruimwoede...en (het cliché schijnt toch echt waar te zijn) nesteldrang. “Het is mogelijk dat we met slechts vier witte muren en de hoognodige meubels overblijven in januari, haha! Ik ben sinds mijn zwangerschap meer gaan opruimen en probeer selectiever te zijn in wat ik meesleep van de kringloop. Voor de inrichting van de babykamer maak ik echter wél een uitzondering. Zo vond ik bij de kringloop de prachtige jaren ’50 kast die Yus heel licht mintgroen geschilderd heeft. Hij is lekker ruim en biedt genoeg plek voor de collectie babykleertjes. Sowieso is de babykamer de meest favoriete kamer in het huis. Het zwart/witte behang past perfect bij de vintage meubeltjes in pastelkleuren. De poster met de konijnen hing vroeger op de logeerkamer bij mijn oma, als kind vond ik dat zo’n fijn plaatje om naar te kijken. Nu mag ons kindje er van gaan genieten, erg lief van mijn oma dat ik de poster mocht meenemen.”

Omdat Eefje de basis van het huis licht hield, is er ruimte voor extra kleur in de accessoires en het behang in huis. Dertien in een dozijn troep komt er niet in, noch kant-en-klare spullen uit één woonwinkel. Door haar schatten in één kast uit te stallen, maar de rest van het interieur niet vol te proppen met frutsels, ontstaat er een samenhangend geheel. Van liefde op het eerste gezicht kan Eefje echter niet spreken als het om tweedehands gaat. “Mijn moeder sleepte me altijd mee naar de kringloop toen ik klein was. Ik vond het vreselijk, kreeg altijd de meest verschrikkelijke allergieaanvallen als ik weer eens een stoffig zaakje had bezocht. En ik wilde eigenlijk liever een Oilily jas dan weer zo’n jas van de kledingbeurs of een zelfgemaakt exemplaar

van stofjes uit de kringloopwinkel. Mijn moeder had echter een neus voor gave dingen en kon van niets iets maken. Als klein meisje zat ik al achter haar naaimachine om van oude gordijnen kleren voor mijn poppen te maken en leerde ze mij allerlei vaardigheden om meubels en spullen te hergebruiken en daarmee mooie hoekjes in huis te stileren. Pas toen ik op mezelf woonde ontdekte ik het genot van het bezoeken van de kringloop en de kick die het geeft om voor weinig iets heel moois en origineels te vinden. Ik heb gelukkig nog heel veel fijne jaren met mijn moeder op schattenjacht kunnen gaan, daar bewaar ik zulke mooie herinneringen aan. Inmiddels heb ik een hele kelderkast vol verzameld met tweedehands puzzels, boekjes en knutselspullen en verheug ik me erop om over een aantal jaar met ons kindje heerlijk aan tafel bezig te kunnen zijn met papier, stof, stempels en verf. “Dat is een van de fijnste herinneringen die ik aan mijn kinderjaren heb: die lange knutselweekenden aan de keukentafel in mijn pyjama.”

Juist in periodes waarin er veel moeilijke dingen gebeurden heeft het bloggen me positiviteit gebracht en kon ik de mooie dingen van het

leven blijven zien. Met bloggen maar bijvoorbeeld ook met Instagram kan ik me onderdompelen in kleine geluksmomentjes. Zo fijn!”

“THRIFTSHOPS LITERALLY GAVE ME THE ALLERGIES” Eefje lives together with Yusuf, their dog Luz and cat Lola in a light and happy 20s home just outside Tilburg’s city center. Over the years, its authentic details disappeared, except for the spectacular leaded window upstairs and the vaulted ceilings in the staircase. Not that that matters, the house is light and the neighborhood feels like a small village within a city. Eefje: “The only thing we still dream of is a big garden, with space for a kitchen garden, some chickens and oh, a goat and a pony. Maybe we shouldn’t just opt for a larger garden, but a farm. I have a thing for animals, they are everywhere in our interior. I love my poodle lamp, the posters with animals and I can’t resist any deer statue in a thrift shop. And I let’s not forget the big fish bowl that’s above the couch. My love hates it though, so every time friends or family visit, he tries to give it away to them.”

In January 2014, Eefje and Yusuf are expecting their first child, a baby girl, to be born. The rumours about pregnant women are true: the house has become a subject to Eefje’s tidying and nesting urges. “If things take a turn for the worse, we could end up with just four white walls and the necessary furniture, haha!

Being pregnant, I’m way more selective about the things I take home from second hand shops. I do make exceptions for the nursery, though. I thrift shopped the gorgeous 50s closet there for example, which Yus painted with a beautiful shade of mint green. It holds enough space for our growing collection of baby clothes. The nursery is my favourite room in the house. The black and white wallpaper matches so beautifully with the furniture painted with vintage pastels. The rabbit poster was already in my grandmother’s guestroom, I loved looking at it when I was little.

My grandmother gave it to us, and now it’s our child’s turn to watch it.”

Since Eefje kept the houses’ base white, there’s plenty of room for fun accessories and colourful wallpaper. A dime a dozen rubbish or instant furniture from one particular shop are nowhere to be seen in this interior. By exhibiting a selection of their favourite (thrift)finds in one cupboard and keeping the rest of the interior clean and tidy, Eefje and Yusuf’s interior is a cohesive framework.

And even though Eefje loves her vintage finds, her affection to second hand objects wasn’t love at first sight: “My mother often dragged me along on her tours around second hand shops when I was little, but I hated those places. They literally gave me the allergies, and I couldn’t stop sneezing after having visited yet another dusty shop. All I wanted was an Oilily jacket like all the other kids, not a second hand one or one made from left over pieces of fabric. My mother did have a nose for cool stuff though, and had a gift of making something out of nothing. She taught me how to make clothes for my dolls using old curtains and how to upcycle old furniture and accessories. When I went to live on my own, I came to fully appreciate the kick a beautiful find can give. I hold very dear memories to all the thriftshop adventures with my mother.

Ever since we moved into this house, I have collected a lot of vintage puzzles, books and DIY stuff and I’m already looking forward to the day that our little girl can play with those. I can already imagine us sitting at the kitchen table, working on small DIY projects together. It’s one of my favourite childhood memories: those long Sunday afternoons pottering around at the kitchen table in my PJ’s.”

“It’s a nice way to get inspired and to inspire others. Especially during rough and shitty times, blogging gave me some much needed positivity. “Ik kocht deze trui van BBNY bij zo’n kakherenzaak ergens in 2006.

Ik had een aantal pakken gekocht en toen viel mijn oog op deze trui: het feit dat het een vest is vond ik een belangrijk verkoopargument.

Ik draag niet zoveel truien, dus áls ik een lekkere trui draag dan draag ik deze. Hij kriebelt niet, hij komt tot aan mijn kin (als ik het koud heb, moet het niet ‘tochten’) en ik kan er een t-shirt onder dragen.”

“I bought this cardigan at one of those posh men’s fashion shops in 2006. I was buying a couple of suits there when this cardigan caught my eye. Its open front was the reason why I bought it eventually, since I can wear it as a jacket as well. I’m not very much of a cardigan guy, so whenever I want to wear something warm, I always wear this one. The wool isn’t itchy, the high collar doesn’t leave any skin marks and I can wear a t-shirt underneath.”

“Deze trui is favoriet omdat ik de aankoop leuk vond en omdat het een leuke trui is. Ik was vijf jaar geleden in Granada, Spanje, voor een conferentie, toen ik me realiseerde dat ik geen warme trui had ingepakt. Gelukkig zag ik deze trui in een winkeletalage hangen. Ik liep naar binnen en nog geen vijf minuten later stond ik weer buiten met mijn aankoop. Mijn reisgenoten beschreven het als “de meest mannelijke aankoop ooit” omdat het vijf minuten had gekost om ‘m aan te schaffen. Ik draag mijn trui vooral thuis, maar wat fijn is: je kan ‘m ook als zomerjas dragen.”

“This cardigan is my favourite, because I loved buying it and it’s one fine cardigan. Five years ago, I was in Granada, Spain, for a conference, when I realized I hadn’t brought anything warm to wear. When I saw this cardigan in the window of a shop, I went straight inside and bought it. The purchase took me less than five minutes, which made my travel buddy call it “the most male purchase ever”. I usually wear this one at home, but what really makes it a nice piece of clothing is that I can also wear it as a jacket during the summer.”

“Ik kocht deze trui vijf jaar geleden in zo’n tof vintage winkeltje, waar de verkoopmeisjes allemaal heel boos naar je kijken, weet je wel?

Hij is van Pop England en het is mijn optreedtrui: als ik op het podium sta, dan heb ik hem aan (behalve bij een optreden op Curaçao – alhoewel ik het overwogen heb!). Ooit ben ik deze trui na een optreden kwijtgeraakt en ben toen direct naar een vervanger gaan zoeken op internet. Uiteindelijk vond ik ‘m op één of andere Duitse Metalsite terug. Het is grappig genoeg een Bretonse trui, blijkbaar is er dus een markt voor Bretonse vissers die van Duitse Metal houden. Toen ik mijn bestelling binnen kreeg (ik bestelde er meteen twee) vond ik prompt het originele exemplaar terug in een pianokoffer.”

“I found this pullover about five years ago in a cute little vintage store, one of those stores where all the shop assistants look angry at you, you know? It’s from Pop England and I always wear it when I’m on stage (except one time, when we performed at Curaçao, even though I seriously considered wearing it that time too!). I lost it once and immediately started to comb the Internet for a substitute. Eventually, I found one in some obscure German Metal web shop. Apparently, there’s a market for Breton fishermen that also like German metal, since this is a Breton fisherman’s sweater. When I received my order (I ordered two, in case another one would go missing), I of course found the sweater that had gone missing. It had been hiding on the bottom of a piano suitcase.”

“Ik heb dit vest al meer dan tien jaar. Hij is van Mexx en ik kocht hem bij Fooks…dat inmiddels allang failliet is. Ik weet nog (kun je nagaan), dat ik hem in de winkel zag liggen en dacht: “Die trui wil ik aantrekken, aanvoelen.” Hij was destijds 80 gulden (zo oud is ie al) maar ik heb ‘m meteen gekocht. Het is mijn lievelingstrui omdat ie zo lekker zit en omdat hij een emotionele waarde heeft. Lange tijd was het niet alleen een kledingstuk, maar ook een soort warm beschermlaagje. En met een blouse eronder is ie ook nog gekleed.

Mannen zijn daar praktisch in. Hij is echt een beetje aftands aan het worden en eigenlijk moet ie weg. Ik heb dus min of meer besloten dat ik hem, na deze shoot als eindsaluut, dan ook echt weg ga doen.”

“This cardigan has been mine already for over a decade. It’s from Mexx, and I bought it at a shop that went bankrupt ages ago. I can still recall the moment I saw it lying in that shop – it appealed to me immediately. Even though it wasn’t very cheap (80 guilders – that’s how old it is!), I still bought it. It is my favourite sweater, because it’s comfortable and because it has emotional value, too. For a long time, this sweater wasn’t just a piece of clothing, it was also a comforting and protecting layer. I can also wear it with a dress shirt to a more formal occasion; men tend to be practical about that kind of things. The sweater is getting a bit scruffy, though, and quite frankly, I should get rid of it. So, this photo shoot will be its salute and after this day, our paths shall part.”

Ik kocht deze trui van Gio-Goi zes jaar geleden omdat ie met muziek te maken heeft: ergens onderin staat de zin “One foot in the rave”.

In de loop van de jaren heb ik ‘m meerdere doeleinden gegeven waardoor het een hele fijne slobber/relaxtrui is geworden. En hij is tijdloos door de kleuren. Mijn trui heeft al veel van de wereld gezien en hij is voor veel doelen inzetbaar. Het feit dát het mijn lievelingstrui is, heeft dus moeten ontstaan.

“This sweater of Gio-Goi is six years old, and I bought it because there’s a line about music on it that says “One foot in the rave”. Over the years, I have worn it for many different occasions, which eventually turned it into a super comfy and baggy sweater. Its design and colours are timeless, which is another reason for why I fell for it. This sweater has seen so much of the world and I can also wear it in many different ways. So, you could say that over the years, it has earned its “favouriteness.”

Ik ben naar binnen gelopen en tijdens het passen van het vest kreeg ik een glas wijn aangeboden en een paar overheerlijke hapjes. “Een jaar of twee geleden kocht ik deze trui met mijn vriendin in de Rotterdamse H&M. Hij is niet te warm, niet te koud en ik kan hem zowel zakelijk als casual dragen. Mannen zijn praktisch in hun keuzes. Eigenlijk viel mijn vriendin erop in de winkel, de credits moeten dus naar haar voor het uitzoeken ervan. Ik had deze trui eerder aan tijdens een shoot van ons tweeën en daar vond ik ‘m mezelf prima staan. Ik heb er overigens geen drie van, haha!”

“A year or two ago, I bought this sweater at H&M in Rotterdam. It’s not too warm or too cold, and I can wear it both at work and on a more casual occasion. All credits go to my girlfriend, who selected the sweater for me. It didn’t catch my eye at first, but I wore it to a couple of photo shoots with her and I liked how it looked on me. I do not own three of them though, haha!”

“Een effen trui vind ik te saai, daarom ga ik altijd voor truien met een print, grappige kleur of patroon. Ik heb deze al heel lang, al lang voordat Mart Smeets de Noorse truien trend zette. Deze trui is door de combinatie van wol en fleece extra warm (ik kan nogal een koukleum zijn) en heeft een capuchon mocht er nog wat extra warmte nodig zijn. Voor mijn werk ga ik altijd in pak gekleed (ik heb best een hekel aan het strijken van overhemden) en een groot voordeel aan truien is ook dat ze niet gestreken hoeven te worden. Nog een reden waarom ik in mijn vrije tijd eigenlijk altijd een trui draag, het geeft het ultieme gevoel van vrijheid!”

“Plain pullovers are too dull for my taste, that’s why I always choose sweaters with a print, a fun colour or pattern. This pullover has been in my closet for ages, I had it long before the Norwegian sweater became hot again. It’s made of fleece and wool, so it’s extra warm, which is great since I get cold very easily. When in need of even more warmth, I can also lift the hood up, haha! I need to dress formally for my day-job (and I really hate ironing dress shirts), so wearing sweaters in my free time makes me feel extra free!”

What you don’t know, you won’t eat. The folks behind Appracadabra have kids themselves and wanted to show them what their food looks like before it’s chopped, sliced and diced. And because they know their little screen loving coach potatoes all too well, they decided to teach them all about fruit and veggies - while playing an app.

Fresh Kids Quiz App shows kids a table full of veggies, then asks which one is the spinach. It dares them to race each other picking red fruits that grow on trees. “It’s a wonderful way to discover Brussels sprouts - and maybe even try them at dinner!" says dad and designer Xander Wiersma.

Over 100 questions will help them identify 57 different types of fruits and vegetables, encourage them to try new ones and help them develop a healthy lifestyle.

Anderhalve meter sneeuw in de stad en min zesendertig graden op de weersvoorspelling voor morgen. Bij ons zou het een horrorwinter-XXL heten, maar in Noorwegen is het pure realiteit. Niet elke dag, natuurlijk - zelfs niet elk jaar, maar records breken ze er niet mee.

Kom je ergens te laat met als excuus "Ik moest even douchen, want ik ben op mijn ski’s” is dat geen enkel probleem. Ze langlaufen zelfs naar een doktersafspraak, berg op en berg af, in het bos of gewoon midden in de stad. Langlaufen is als fietsen, zou je kunnen zeggen. Iedereen kan het en de meesten doen het.

Het was vroeg in het nieuwe jaar, januari. Dankzij een paar centimeter sneeuw duurde de rit naar Schiphol bijna vier uur in plaats van anderhalf. Volgens het nieuws reden er geen treinen, bussen maar mondjesmaat en bleef iedereen het best maar binnen. "Nederland beleeft horrorwinter!”, stond op de voorpagina van de krant - het was de koudste winter in bijna vijftien jaar. Tegen de min twintig liep het. Overdag vroor het, de sneeuw bleef liggen en dakpannen waren niet meer zichtbaar. Maar het vliegtuig vloog en de horrorwinter ging over in een winter met zo’n twintig graden meer vorst, ruim een meter extra sneeuw, die uiteindelijk twee maanden langer duurde. Een prachtwinter.

Vooral in het weekend krioelt het van de skifanaten. Ze trekken de bossen in: met een gevulde thermoskan en reep chocola voor een dagje, of met backpack vol eten en spelletjes voor een weekend genieten in het familiehuisje, de hytte. Ik ging ook een keer mee. Vol goede moed, die na honderd bomen een beetje was verdwenen, maar bij aankomst bij het houten huisje weer volop overheerste. Het was er warm, ook al had de kachel enkele maanden niet gebrand. De familiefoto’s lieten zien dat het er gezellig was - 1961, op een rijtje met de hele familie (incl. kop koffie) in de sneeuw. 1967, de kleinsten op de slee. 1975, spelletjes spelen voor het slapengaan. 1979, oma haakt een nieuw kleedje voor op tafel. Het kleedje ligt er nog. De bordspellen in de kast zullen dezelfde zijn als op de foto en het picknickbankje voor de deur vast hetzelfde als waar de hele familie zo’n 50 jaar geleden op zat.

Min zesendertig klinkt dramatisch, niet?

Eigenlijk voelt min zesendertig als min zestien. Eén stap buitenshuis en je bent klaarwakker, je wangen gloeien en zijn rood gekleurd en bovendien heb je na enkele meters wandelen al een grote mok thee of koffie verdiend om op te warmen.

Onder je gewone kleding draag je nog steeds één extra legging (die je in je sokken hebt gestopt), je sokken trek je over je broek of tweede legging en onder je shirt of trui of jurkje draag je een shirt met lange mouwen. Muts op, sjaal om, wanten aan.

Als de dagen korter en kouder worden, worden de Noren wakker. Ze tellen af tot kerst, verheugen zich op de speculaashuisjes die ze zullen bouwen, de sneeuw die de straten laat stralen en het Noorderlicht dat aan de hemel danst op weg naar huis van school, werk of de supermarkt. Noren worden geboren met ski’s aan hun voeten, wordt er gezegd en hoewel dat natuurlijk niet waar is, zou je het bijna geloven. In de metro’s en bussen staan minstens zoveel langlauflatten als mensen en waar onze universiteit een fietsenkelder heeft, heeft een Noorse universiteit een skihok.

De kachel werkte nog, maar ’s nachts werd er niet gestookt.

Wilde je je bed uit, was het dus noodzaak om je dikke, wollen sokken aan te doen - natuurlijk over je (pyjama)broek. Ik kookte water en de fluitende fluitketel maakte iedereen wakker. Het was half 4 in de nacht. We dronken thee, zongen liedjes en hadden de gordijnen wagenwijd open. De aurora-activiteit was namelijk hoog, vertelde internet ons eerder die dag. En inderdaad, enkele minuten later dansten groene slierten aan de hemel. Met onze warme mokken lieten we de sneeuw op het picknickbankje smelten, het oppervlak precies groot genoeg voor onze billen, om vervolgens minutenlang buiten te genieten van de winter. Helemaal vergetend dat min zesendertig best koud is.

Begin mei smolt de laatste sneeuw. De dagen waren niet langer licht van de weerkaatsing van de maan in de sneeuw, maar licht van de zon die slechts een uur per dag sliep. De lange dagen zijn minstens zo mooi als de eerste sneeuwval, maar de winter miste ik meteen. Want het was deze prachtwinter met bussen en treinen die gewoon rijden, een fatsoenlijk pak sneeuw in plaats van grijze drab en de Scandinavische gezelligheid die het bevestigden: ik ben een wintermeisje.

One and a half meters of snow in the city center and minus thirty-six degrees, tomorrow’s weather forecast says. If it was for the Netherlands, it would be called a horror winter-XXL, but in Norway it’s nothing but reality. Not every day, of course - not even every year, but it won’t break any records.

In the metros and busses, there are at least as many skis as people. Saying "I came skiing, so I had to take a shower” is a legal excuse when you’re late. The Norwegians ski everywhere and always. Skiing in Norway is like biking in the Netherlands, you could say. Everyone can do it and most of the people will.

It was quite early in the New Year, January. Thanks to a few centimeters of snow, the drive to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol took almost four hours instead of one and a half. The news told us there weren’t any trains running, only a couple of busses, and it would be better for the people to stay inside. "Horror winter in the Netherlands!” the paper said - it was the coldest winter in almost fifteen years. Almost minus twenty degrees. It was freezing during the day, the snow didn’t melt the moment it touched the ground and you could no longer see the rooftops from under the snow. But the plane took off, and while saying goodbye to the horror winter, it was time to say hello to a winter that was twenty degrees colder, with more than a meter of extra snow and lasting two months longer. A beautiful winter.

Especially in the weekends, the skiing fans are out. They head into the forests with a thermoscan full of coffee and a chocolate bar for one day of skiing, or with a backpack filled with food and games for spending an entire weekend in the family cottage, the hytte. I joined one time, too. In good spirits, that got lost at some point, but came back straight after arriving to the wooden house.

Although the fireplace hadn’t been used for a couple of months, it was warm inside. The family pictures on the wall were a proof of the good old times - 1961, a family picture in the snow. 1967, the youngest family members on a sled. 1975, playing games before bedtime. 1979, grandmother crocheting a new rug. The rug is still lying there. The board games in the cabinet will most likely be the same ones as in the picture and the bench outside must be the one the whole family sat on fifty years ago.

Minus thirty-six degrees sounds horrible, doesn’t it?

Honestly, minus thirty-six degrees feels like minus sixteen. As soon as you set one step outside of your house you’re wide awake, and your cheeks begin to glow with the colour red.

Moreover, you definitely deserve a big cup of coffee or tea after walking only a couple of minutes, simply to get warm again. You still wear just one extra pair of leggings under your normal clothes, with your socks pulled over your pants or a second pair of leggings and a longsleeve under your shirt or dress. Put on your hat, wear a scarf and don’t forget your gloves.

When the days get shorter and colder, the Norwegians wake up.

They count days to Christmas, looking forward to the gingerbread houses they’ll build, the snow that will make the streets shine and the northern lights that will dance in the sky on their way back home. Norwegians are born wearing skis, they say, and although that isn’t true, you might almost believe it.

The fireplace was still working, but it wasn’t used during the night. If you wanted to get out of your bed, you had to put on your warm woolen socks. I boiled water and the whistling kettle woke up the rest. It was 3:30am. We drank tea, sang songs and opened the curtains, so that we could look outside. The aurora activity would be high this night, the Internet had told us before.

And indeed, after waiting for a couple of minutes, green strings appeared, dancing in the sky. With our warm cups of tea, we melted some of the snow on the bench - just big enough for us to sit on - sat down and enjoyed winter, completely forgetting how cold minus thirty-six degrees actually is.

In the beginning of May, the snow melted. The days were no longer light because of the moon reflecting in the snow, but mostly because of the sun that at that time only slept one hour a day. The long days are as lovely as the first snowfall, but I missed the winter immediately. It was this beautiful winter - with busses and trains driving, a thick layer of snow and the Scandinavian coziness that confirmed it: I am a winter girl.
