136,167 tourists visited the Maltese Islands during January of this year. This has proved to be an encouraging start for the tourism calendar especially when noting down the fact that these numbers exceeded by 7% the 2019 levels: The same year that Malta’s inbound tourism achieved record highs. Well, if the numbers are rosy, the economic effect is a better one. In fact, the total total tourism expenditure surpassed the €99.1 million, an increase of €52.2 million over January 2022 and 17% more than the last preCOVID-19 year.

Putting the above under the lens, we must point out that the French, Italian and Polish markets have exceeded the 2019 levels by 13% with the Italian from the latter being the the largest one with a share of 17% of the total number of tourists who visited the splendour of the Maltese Islands during the first weeks of the year. Notably, repeat visitors

reached 92% of 2019 and first time tourists whopped the same period by 13%.

These results are not a coincidence. A lot of work has been done. Yet, much more to accomplish. While we are rapidly closing the recovery part and foscusing on the rethinking phase. Where do we want to invest? Where do we want to take our tourism product in order to fully revitalize the industry and make it a sustainable and profitable one, both for the investors as well as for the employees?

These are the continous questions that we must ask to ourselves if we want a tourism model that eradicates seasonality from Malta’s tourism custom. A hospitality project that embraces quality as the order of the day in everything we do. A Malta being a hub of tourism excellence in the Mediterranean.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

Few things bring us all together more effectively than a captivating performance. From tongue-in-cheek comedies and music performances to new theatrical smashes and movie screenings, Malta has some incredible entertainment lined up this month!

Waiting for James B

Waiting for James B is a contemporary dance performance by guest company Art Mouv from Corsica. A perpetual movement which does not compromise with freedom of expression, which embodies our humanity.

While the young contemporary French dance of the 80’s took off and asserted an unprecedented legitimacy, self-taught dancers inflamed the Parisian dance floor and created the most underground tendency of what will later be called hip hop dance. Two worlds which today are revealed to each other between attempts at democratization on the one hand and institutionalization on the other. This is what James B. reveals, which calls on emancipation of bodies through dancing pleasure beyond the usual divisions. The artists’s imaginary spreads both among the audience and on the stage, defying the stereotyped borders between the spectacular form of the show and the ambitious choreographic writing. Dance is inspired by a musical register which takes roots in soul and is embodied alternately in jazz rock, hip hop contemporary, African repertory, in a pulsation that reveals its timeless character. The Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach

The Goldberg Variations BWV 988, is a work written by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations. First published in 1741, the work is considered to be one of the most important examples of variation form. The Variations are named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may have been the first performer. This will be performed by Francesco Attesti, an Italian pianist of international acclaim. Among his generation of musicians, he is considered one of the finest interpreters of the Romantic and early Twentieth Century Repertoire. This concert is presented by the Embassy of Italy, Teatru Manoel and the Italian Cultural Institute. Get your tickets from www.teatrumanoel.com.mt

EXPLORING

ŻURRIEQ

Malta is a haven for history enthusiasts, as every village is brimming with a fascinating past. The entire Maltese archipelago, including Gozo, is steeped in history that spans across thousands of years. Żurrieq is no exception, with a church built in the mid-1400s that serves as a testament to its rich history. The name 'Żurrieq' comes from the Maltese word 'zoroq', meaning 'blue'. While there is a debate as to its origin, historians believe that it may refer to

ŻURRIEQ

the clear waters or the inhabitants' eye colour.

Żurrieq is known for its stunning countryside, traditional Maltese architecture, and rich history. Żurrieq's history dates back to the prehistoric era, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. The Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are located near Żurrieq and can also offer a glimpse into Malta's prehistoric past.

Żurrieq is the location of diverse archaeological relics from a plethora of historical eras. Phoenician graves were unearthed in the Tal-Hlewwa region's "Ta' Danieri" territory. Around the Xarolla Windmill, Paleo-Christian burials have been unearthed and excavated. Architectural characteristics of these burials are unique among comparable tombs on the island.

In the 14th century, the villages of Hal Lew, Hal Millieri, Hal Manin, Bubaqra, Hal Far, Nigret, and Qrendi were all part of Żurrieq. However, in 1618, Qrendi became a village of its own. The Parish Church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria and has its roots in a chapel built in 1436. The present church was built between 1634 and 1659 by local architect Matteolo Saliba, and it contains six paintings by Mattia Preti. There are also other paintings by renowned artists such as Luca Garnieri and Alfred Camilleri Cauchi. Żurrieq is also a site of various archaeological remains dating back from different periods, including Phoenician

tombs, ruins of a chapel built on what may be a Roman temple, and Paleo-Christian tombs near the Xarolla Windmill.

Żurrieq's location made it a strategic point for the Knights of St. John, who established a small garrison in the town during the 16th century. During the British colonial period, Zurrieq experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The town's population increased, and new buildings, including churches and schools, were constructed. The town's agricultural sector also experienced growth, with farmers exporting their produce to other parts of the island.

Today, Żurrieq is a bustling town with a population of approximately 11,000 people. The town has managed to preserve its traditional Maltese architecture, with many of its buildings dating back to the medieval and British colonial periods. The town's main square, Pjazza San Mikiel, is also a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

The town has played an important role in Malta's history, and its strategic location has made it an important centre for agriculture, trade, and defence. Today, Żurrieq is a thriving town that has managed to preserve its traditional Maltese architecture and way of life. A visit to Żurrieq is a must for anyone interested in Malta's rich history and culture!

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ŻURRIEQ

XAROLLA WINDMILL

The Xarolla windmill, which is also known as Tal-Ħarba Windmill, is a traditional Maltese structure that dates back to the 18th century. The Xarolla Windmill was originally built in 1724 by Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena as part of a plan to improve the island's economy by promoting agriculture. The windmill was used to grind grain, primarily wheat, into flour. The flour was then used to make bread and other baked goods. The windmill was designed in the typical Maltese style, with a circular tower that stands approximately 12 meters tall. The tower is made of limestone and is topped with a wooden cap and four large sails that measure 16 meters in length.

BUBAQRA TOWER

Bubaqra Tower formerly named as Saliba Tower, is a fortified house situated in an agricultural estate Bubaqra, limits of Żurrieq. It was built as a country retreat in the late 16th century, over 400 years ago and was built as a private residence for a Chaplin of the Order of St John, a man called Don Matteo Pisani. The tower and its gardens have been restored, and now serve as a family retreat. It is officially named as Bubaqra Palace .

PARISH CHURCH OF ST. CATHERINE

The town is home to several churches that date back to the 16th century and feature traditional Maltese architecture. The Parish Church of St. Catherine, which was built in 1680, is one of the most prominent churches in Zurrieq and is a popular destination for religious pilgrims. The church was later expanded, and two bell towers were added to the original structure. The church features beautiful Maltese baroque architecture and is home to several important relics, including a statue of St. Catherine and six canvases by the Italian painter Mattia Preti.

WIED BASSASA

Wied Bassasa is a picturesque valley located in the limits of Zurrieq. The valley is known for its unspoilt beauty, with towering cliffs and crystalclear waters that flow into the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors to Wied Bassasa can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking and snorkelling, and taking in the stunning scenery that surrounds the area. The bottom of the valley is constituted of rocks and boulders covered in weeds and algae, which provide habitat for several fish species. Wied Bassasa is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of Malta and explore the island's rich ecological heritage. However, it is important to note that the valley is exposed to northwest and southerly winds so do be careful if you decide to take this journey on!

AN ICONIC HARBOUR HIKE MĠARR, GOZO

There is something about arriving on the island of Gozo that has incredible appeal. Maybe it’s sailing into Mgarr harbour perhaps it’s the majestic Chambray fort overlooking the harbour; maybe it’s the quaint Lourdes chapel on the hilltop that graces the view, or it could be simply the case that the place, has retained the authentic feeling of living on an island.

Maybe you’ve already been to the island, and Mgarr harbour was simply the point of arrival and departure. If that’s been the case, you’ve missed a significant

22 OH MY MALTA
Photography: Joseph Caruana

landmark on the island of Gozo. One overlooking item on most travellers’ list of things of what to do in Gozo is a serious exploration of Mġarr harbour.

The Fishing Port & Yacht Marina

Mġarr is the fishermen’s place. Today many Gozitan fishermen berth their vessels here, and you can see their fishing boats in the port.

From the modern-day schooners to the smaller craft and the traditional luzzus painted in jewel-tone colours, the dock in the harbour is always a picturesque place to visit and capture splendid photos of the water and light reflections. Further in, you’ll also see the mooring decks and pontoons for sailing boats and yachts. Naturally, Gozo’s yacht marina welcomes sailing parties who choose to visit the island while cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

Seafood bonanza at Mgarr’s Seaside Restaurants

Make plans to stop for lunch or dinner at one of the seaside restaurants. There’s no doubt you will be to enjoy the ‘freshest’ seafood dishes. Try the traditional fish soup (aljotta), grilled swordfish or tuna steak, spaghetti with octopus sauce, Gozitan whitebait fritters (pulpetti tal-makku), octopus in garlic or stuffed squid. Of course,

23 OH MY MALTA

if you’re here during the lampuki season, you will have more typical delightful dishes that these seaside restaurants offer. If you’re short on time and cannot feast on seafood, you need to find time to indulge in a pint. Head to one of Gozo’s oldest bars down in the port. It is an iconic place to stop for a drink and enjoy magnificent views from the terrace.

The hilltop Lourdes Chapel

Climb up the steep staircase from the port to the quaint chapel on the hilltop. You will undoubtedly notice the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in an alcove on the cliffside. The story has it that back in the 19th century, some twenty years after the Lourdes apparitions in France, an unknown traveller to the island remarked how the cliff face reminded him of the Lourdes grotto. That was enough to inspire the devout locals to erect a statue and later build the Gothicstyle chapel with its pointed roof and steeple, which now has become a landmark of Mġarr harbour. Taking a selfie while on the promontory outside of the chapel with

the background of the port is a must! It’s nothing short of amazing in all sorts of weather and seasons.

The Fortress of Chambray

Take a second look at the Chambray fortress. The bastioned fort overlooking Mgarr harbour was originally built to protect the port. There were plans that this fortress would be another citadel or city on the island of Gozo. However, only a few people know that the Gozitans and their livestock took refuge in this fort when the French invaded Malta in 1798. Today it is a private residential gated community, but you can hike in the pine and conifer grove beneath it. The track in the woodland saunters around the fort, leading to a precarious path over the clay slopes to the beach known as Xatt l-Aħmar.

Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar

The rugged stretch of the coast beneath the Chambray fortress is a lovely beach perfect

Citadel

for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The zone is a favourite among divers who enjoy diving ‘wrecks’ as several ships have been scuttled in the area. Diving the wrecks is a must for divers when considering what to do in Gozo. Xatt l-Aħmar is an idyllic spot to be at sunrise. If you love nature and the coast, it should be on your list of things to do while in Gozo. One must take a winding and a rather steep country road to reach the beach.

This challenge ensures the place is never really crowded. If you explore the area, you might even come across the fougasse in the area, which was meant to be filled with small stones to be fired at the incoming enemy. During the colder seasons, Xatt l-Aħmar is also a scenic spot for picnics and family outings.

Taking a hike around Mġarr and savouring the harbour’s colours and views is a must. It’s not just a picture-perfect location. Nor is it simply the welcome and goodbye view of Gozo. It’s also one of the best places to capture the essence of the island of Gozo.

MALTA AND GOZO'S BEST PICNIC SPOTS

Ahh, spring. That time of year when the sun begins to pop out but the light breeze blocks out the extreme heat. Winter has slowly moved away and it has started to gradually transition into summer. We take a look at some of Malta’s (and one of Gozo’s) best picnic spots you can enjoy during the lovely season of spring.

TOP OF THE WORLD, ĦAL GĦARGĦUR

Looking over the fields and into the distance, the Mediterranean sea and the neighbouring locality Baħariċ-Ċaghaq can be seen. Top of the World allows you to take in the breathtaking views whilst also offering beautiful hiking trails. Picnics here are out of this world and with park benches available, you can either decide to eat and fuel up before a trek, have a post-hike or calm and relaxing snack, or a romantic picnic whilst watching the stunning sunset out in the distance.

BUSKETT WOODLANDS (GARDENS), LIMITS OF RABAT

One of the more popular locations, Buskett Gardens offers a beautiful picnic area for families. Boasting an impressive selection of different types of trees, the gardens also include many paths for you to explore, perhaps allowing to help you walk off all the delicious foods and snacks you bought to eat. Spring is the best time to go to Buskett Gardens as the picnic area is an open space that allows the sun to beam down with the large trees to help provide shade, should the sun become unbearable.

This popular beach is exactly what it’s called. The bay has soft golden sand and an extremely spacious beach area (when it is not jam-packed with beach-goers) where you can go to sun tan, play beach volleyball, enjoy a nice picnic or hike on the nearby hiking trails. Although there are no park benches available, avid picnic lovers can simply bring a blanket, put it straight down on the sand and watch the water sparkle in the sunlight and watch the rest of the world go by. Either bring some goodies from home or check out the local cafes and surrounding food stalls for some delicious pre-made food if you’re after a truly relaxing experience.

SANAP CLIFFS, GOZO

Overlooking the beautiful blue ocean with Malta out in the distance, not only do the Sanap Cliffs provide a perfect and isolated picnic area, but also stunning views. This one is not for the faint hearted but if heights and cliffs aren’t your thing, worry not as there is plenty of space you can sit and overlook the ocean without being right on the edge of this beautiful spot. You can enjoy your picnic either during the day to watch the blue skies surround you, or just before sun set to witness a truly captivating moment.

CHADWICK LAKES, LIMITS OF L-IMTARFA & RABAT

Having its very own eco-system, people can expect to see many types of flora and fauna as well as endless hiking trails, dams, lakes and picnic spots. Chadwick Lakes is a much loved spot for families and friends to all get together along with their pets, as there is plenty of space and land to utilise and run around on. Situated in the limits of L-Imtarfa and Ir-Rabat, it not only proves to provide endless explorations of nature, but also an exciting journey to reach it as it is located in the more quiet north-western side of the island, surrounded by farms and fields.

KENNEDY GROVE, ST. PAULS BAY

With a monument dedicated to the former US president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, this green area offers walking paths, water features, an open gym and plenty of space to sit and enjoy a picnic. Kennedy Grove is a popular area for friends and families and a must-visit if you’re in need of a nice picnic day. As mentioned, this area also comes with artificial water features which allows for an entertaining sight for those who want something different. Located in the north region of Malta, it allows those who live nearby to enjoy a local nature haven whilst attracting those who live in the opposite end of the island to have an exciting day trip and an even better visit once arrived. Parking is available all down the street of Kennedy Grove but as expected, it can fill up quite quickly.

A SPOTLIGHT ON MALTESE ENDEMIC FAUNA

The Maltese Islands are known for their unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Despite their small size, they are home to a variety of endemic species. Out of

the approximately 10,000 terrestrial and freshwater species found in the Maltese archipelago, a considerable 78 are unique to the region. In our last issue, we discussed Maltese endemic flora (you

can head over to our website and check that out). As a result, today we will cover some unusual fauna that contributes to our national biodiversity.

28 OH MY MALTA
Gremxula ta’ Malta

The Maltese field beetle (MT: Hanfusa tar-Raba') is an indigenous beetle that can only be found on the Maltese Islands. The Maltese field beetle belongs to the genus Pimelia, which is distinguished by its elongated and flattened body form. The Maltese field beetle is a medium-sized insect that is 16-20 mm in length. It has an elongated and flattened body that is black with a glossy surface that reflects light. The beetle's wings are shortened and are no longer functioning, rendering it flightless.

The Maltese freshwater crab (MT: Qabru) is a rare and endemic subspecies of crab that can only be found in freshwater habitats on the Maltese Islands. The crab belongs to the family Potamidae, which is characterized by its freshwater habitat. The Maltese freshwater crab is a smallsized crab, measuring approximately be 7-8cm in length, and has a brownishgreen colour. It lives around pools and springs, where it hides beneath stones in the water, amid plants, or by burrowing into tunnels excavated in the mud or clay. It is a predatory creature that feeds on smaller animals such as snails and tadpoles after sunset. It may be particularly spotted in Bahrija, Mtahleb, San Martin, and Lunzjata Valley (Gozo). Unfortunately, its numbers have been declining in recent years due to the drying

from brown to grey, with a distinct pattern of dark bands or spots along its back. The Maltese wall lizard is a diurnal species, meaning that it is active during the day and spends most of its time basking in the sun on rocks or walls. The lizard feeds on a

variety of invertebrates, including insects, spiders, and snails. The Maltese wall lizard is one of the most studied reptile species on the Maltese Islands and interestingly, there are four endemic subspecies of the wall lizard, all of which are endemic to the country. All of these subspecies differ in morphology, coloration, and distribution on the Maltese Islands.

and potentially toxic. The Maltese ruby tiger moth's habitat is mainly in open areas, such as fields and meadows, but it can also be found in forested areas. The moth's vibrant coloration and distinctive patterns make it an iconic species on the Maltese Islands.

A number of these species are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and other sentient factors. To safeguard these species, conservation measures are being carried out, including the establishment of protected areas and the implementation of conservation initiatives. It is critical to maintain preserving the Maltese Islands' distinctive flora and wildlife for future generations to enjoy!

up of the springs it dwells in, as well as human capture. So, if you spot a Qabru, do relish in its beauty from a distance!

The Maltese wall lizard (MT: Gremxula ta’ Malta) is a small-sized lizard, measuring approximately 15 cm in length. Its body is elongated, and its head is triangularshaped. The lizard's coloration varies

One of the most fascinating species that inhabits our tiny island is the Maltese ruby tiger moth (MT: Rubin). The endemic moth belongs to the family Arctiidae, which is known for its vibrant colours and distinctive patterns. The Maltese ruby tiger moth is a mediumsized moth, measuring approximately 30-40 mm in wingspan. Its wings are chocolate brown, with distinct spots and a ruby-red abdomen. The moth's coloration acts as a warning signal to predators, indicating that it is unpalatable

A LOOK AT TRADITIONAL EASTER FOODS

Easter is just around the corner and what better way to spend it than with family, loved ones and good food?

Malta has a long tradition of foods and dishes that were originally created by the Maltese people for the Maltese islands and internationally and culturally inspired dishes.

We take look at traditional Maltese foods that are especially for Easter (or any time of year if you can’t get enough and prefer to bake).

Kwareżimal

Kwareżimal is a traditional Maltese sweet that is prepared throughout Lent and can even be made on Easter day. It is a

mixture. Present day, some recipes opt for egg whites as it makes the texture lighter and fluffier. If you prefer a

Words by Tiana Formosa

vegan version, simply follow the original recipe that excludes egg whites and swap the honey for agave or maple syrup to still achieve that sweet and sticky flavour and texture.

Gluten-free oat flour can also be used to make kwareżimal gluten-free. The beauty of these Maltese traditional Easter treats is that they can simply be made to fit anyone’s dietary requirements and still have their distinct signature taste. When eating kwareżimal, you can expect to taste hints of spiced citrus, orange and almond, as well as the sweetness of the honey (or chosen alternative).

Figolli

Perhaps everyone's favourite, Figolli is a much-loved Easter treat. They are often shaped into bunnies but are also commonly found in other variations such as easter eggs, butterflies, chickens or hearts to name a few. The dough itself once baked is buttery, slightly crumbly and highly addictive and to literally top it all off, coloured icing is iced atop to not only add colour and a pretty display but to also add a slight sweetness to the figolli. Chocolate and sprinkles are other popular toppings too, should you prefer. If that wasn’t enough to make you want to try a figoli ASAP, they also contain an almond paste filling that adds an even deeper flavour.

Once you bake your figolli, you can store it in cling film for up to a month (if you can fight the urge to eat all of it before then). Additionally, if you follow a gluten-free diet, you can switch the recipe for gluten-free flour and xanthan gum which will help bind the ingredients together.

Qaghaq tal-Appostli

Known in English as ‘Apostle’s Ring Bread’, this a specially crafted bread that is traditionally baked for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. It is found in bakeries and supermarkets throughout the Lenten time and is distinct due to its ringed shape and flavour. It is slightly sweet and topped with sesame seeds and almonds.

It is a much-loved and religious food in Malta around Easter time and with its soft centre and crunchy exterior, it is highly enjoyable. The extra added beauty of this bread is due to its very slightly sweet flavour quality, a spread of butter or a handful of broad beans compliment the bread as although the flavours contrast each other, the butter or savoury condiment of your choice cuts through and perfectly balances out the flavours.

As much as we love these traditional Maltese sweets, it is also important to remember their history and religious importance as they hold a deep and meaningful position in Maltese culture and tradition.

IL-QUĊĊIJA

A

TIMELESS TRADITION THAT CONTINUES TO DELIGHT MALTESE FAMILIES

32 OH MY MALTA

The 'Quċċija' is one of the few Maltese traditions that has stood the test of time. Previously, the term referred to a somber tradition where Maltese families would donate food to the needy in memory of a deceased relative. This practice dates to the 18th century it takes place at a child’s first birthday party, in an attempt to predict the child’s future profession by incorporaitng objects symbolising various professions, trades or lifestyles on a tray or basket for a child to crawl towards. The first object the child selects is believed to foretell their future.

Boys used to be given distinct items in comparison to their female counterparts, which reflected more archaic views on gender and occupation. For instance, boys were given conventional tools, whereas girls were handed kitchenware or crochet hooks. Modern 'Quċċija' incorporate many of the same items for both boys and girls. Family members are allowed to verbally encourage the child to crawl towards the tray and make their choice. The items used in the Quċċija have changed over time, with more modern objects representing contemporary occupations.

For instance, if a child picks an academic book, parents are congratulated on their unborn child's future college degree. A football represents the child's

potential for athletic success, while the Artist Coloring Book encourages the child's creative expression. The Comb represents a potential career in hairstyling, while Cash represents the child's potential for asset management. The Musical Instrument suggests a career in music, while the Aircraft suggests a potential career in aviation. A Chef's pots represent a love of cooking and culinary skills, while the Rosary Bead represents a potential career in religious service. The Toothbrush represents a future career as a dentist, while the Equipment represents potential knowledge and skills in various mechanical systems. Fortunately, this tradition does not have any rigid guidelines. One can anticipate seeing family members make several lastminute adjustments to the tray, causing the other party guests to fall into hilarity at the calculated repositioning.

The Maltese tradition of the 'Quċċija' is a unique and entertaining custom that has been celebrated for generations. Although similar traditions are observed in some far-flung areas of Italy, Greece, and Sicily, it is not as prevalent there as it is in Malta. The locals take great pride in preserving the history and values of their ancestors by passing down customs and rituals from generation to generation. Thus, by embracing their traditions, the Maltese continue to create meaningful connections with their past and present, shaping the future for generations to come. If you mention the tradition of the 'Quċċija' to any of the locals, they will surely have plenty of stories to share about the items picked by their child or a close relative during the celebratory event.

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR THE WAY OF THE CROSS AT TA’ ĠIEŻU

It is evident that these paintings were executed by different artists, as the technique employed and the colours used vary from one station to the next.

As the first paintings were being dismounted in January 2023, an interesting discovery was made on the verso of one them, which bore the inscription: “Joannes Columba Melitensis fecit sumbtibus Dominus Jacobbus Gini 1738.” This inscription revealed the name of the artist, the person who commissioned it, and the year when it was executed.

More studies will be carried out after the cleaning of the paintings, allowing the restorers to see the original colour as well as study the technique used, which could possibly lead to uncovering the artists’ identities.

Valletta is synonymous with priceless works of art that embellish its every corner and edifice. One such trove of art and architecture is the Church of Saint Mary of Jesus, better known as Ta’ Ġieżu by locals. The Malta Airport Foundation is supporting the conservation and restoration of the fourteen paintings making up the Way of the Cross inside this church, but what is the significance of this project?

The Importance of this Way of the Cross

There is no specific information regarding the establishment of the stations of the Via Crucis in this church, but without doubt this was the first church that witnessed this devotion on the Maltese Islands. The establishment of the Way of the Cross in this church can be traced back to the first half of the 18th century. The paintings of the scenes of the Passion are encased in Baroque

frames, sculptured by Abram Gatt (18631944).

A Look at the Complex Process

The restoration and conservation process kicked off with the documentation of each painting, as well as their decorative frames. Different methods are being used with the aim of putting together documentation that is as detailed as possible and establishing the state of conservation of the paintings and their frames. This stage forms the basis for a detailed plan for the rest of the process. Following the documentation, the paintings will receive anoxic treatment to address any possible insect infestation. A delicate process will follow to remove the oxidised varnish coating and layers of overpainting that could have been applied over the years, possibly revealing concealed details.

The First Historical Discovery

The ultimate goal is to re-establish the paintings’ original appearance, whilst stirring more interest in the devotion to the Way of the Cross and its history in Malta.

A LOOK INTO THE STATE-OF-THE-ART WINERY IN SIĠĠIEWI

Tucked away in Siġġiewi lies one of the most serene vineyards in Malta. A private estate and home to an exceptional quality of red wines, chardonnay and Rose’. Walking

beyond the gates and onto the land of Ta’ Betta, you will first be greeted by five lovely dogs who know the rules of good behaviour. If the dogs don’t greet you first, Marie Chocquet, who runs the estate will

be there right away to bring you in and show you around. Upon entering, you will find giant egg-shaped containers of various colours that are holding the red grapes for one year following the harvest as they turn from solids to liquids over that time. Further back you will find a spa room that showers and massages ever so gently the white grapes in order to make the highest quality chardonnay. In the back you can also find the aged oak barrels of various kinds of oak depending on the wine they are helping to age. Even the details of circles at the lower part of the oak barrels with anywhere from one to five circles punched in to let you know how many years each of the specific barrels have been aging the wine. Once it has served its five years, it is replaced with a new oak barrel. This helps them keep up with which barrel is made of what type of oak and for how long it has been fulfilling its purpose.

This land was acquired by Astrid and Juanito Camilleri and named for their daughter, Betta in 2002. There logo is of Betta herself leaning up to pick from the grapevine. By 2003 after cleaning up and preparing the land, the first grape trees were brought in from France. They brought in only the best to help them set up their winery and created fine wines with personality. They take great pride in naming each wine and giving it its own distinct description based on the trees, the history, the land and any other defining characteristic the wine may possess. Right now, there are four signature wines:

36 OH MY MALTA
Words by Emily Francis

1) The Isabella Guasconi, The flirtatious. She is a Syrah Rose’ with a dry, medium body who was fermented in the cast stone vats (the giant eggshaped vats) and aged through an oak tonneaux which helps to give her a fresh and youthful taste and quality.

2) Jean Parisot. The tenacious. This is their signature Chardonnay made exquisitely special with a unique and difficult process that carries with it an apricot, white fig and vanilla which adds to its complexities and incredibly clean taste. This Chardonnay is the perfect balance of alcohol and acid. It is strong and clean yet subtle and very clear.

3) Antonio Manoel. The opulent. This is one of their mighty blends that has both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This flavour combines strawberry and red forest-fruit paired with undertones of caramel and chocolate. Talk about an experience when you taste this blend! It’s heaven and earth melting right on the tongue!

4) Philippe Villiers. The robust. This is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The undertones of this wine combine forest-fruit with undertones of black and bell pepper and tobacco. Even the bottles are so gorgeous all in

black with the most iconic images to complete the look of sophistication, elegance and flavours that would ignite any wine connoisseur and novice alike.

Wine Tasting and Tours

Ta’ Betta is a private estate and wine tastings and tour groups are booked in a limited capacity, so make your plans early if you want to experience the different wines that the estate produces. Marie will be there to answer all your questions and take you through your wine experience.

The tasting room is located on the top floor and also the terrace of the winery with stunning views that overlook the Maltese countryside. While Marie walks you through the different wines and pairs them with the perfect appetizers, including olive oil also grown on the land, you can taste all of the wines and eat just the right amount to go with each.

Whether you are having visitors come, or you want a perfect date night out, Ta’ Betta is ideal.

Remember to bring a jacket or a wrap. It’s a winery, therefore it is chilly inside even in summer! Find Ta’ Betta at www.tabetta.com
