OISTAT in 2020
International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians
We still see light at the end of the tunnel. Although the pandemic has brought challenges and uncertainties to the world, we will strive to constantly connect OISTAT people beyond borders.
1
Year-End Report from President Dear OISTAT friends! It is usually a pleasure to look back on a memorable year. This year however, this is not entirely the case. Memorable: for sure. If ever there was a year that turned out to be a gamechanger, then certainly 2020 is in the top of the list of memorable ones. But looking back with pleasure? Well, mixed feelings are probably the best way to put it. Every beginning of a year we kick off with great expectations: hopefully good health, good fortune and some prosperity, and the wish that our plans will be realized and successful. Very few people could see the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic coming and initially we all encountered it with disbelief. The pandemic has caused disappointment and grief and wiped out all initial plans and dreams. Was this year completely lost? For some plans, alas, that might be the case. Just over a year ago, I was travelling for the last time: to Helsinki and Stockholm. Little did I know this was to be the last time for actually visiting an OISTAT meeting in person. After years of travelling to OISTAT events all over the world, often once a month, all international meetings had to be cancelled, and as goes for most of us, my screen is now my window to the world. Through this virtual window however, I encountered an enormous display of resilience. It was heart-warming to see all kinds of initiatives and creativity popping up in order to connect.
3
For sure, having to postpone World Stage Design to 2022 was a disappointment and it surely is asking a lot of from all the enthusiastic organizers to re-direct energy and re-schedule activities, and still keep the energy flowing. Same goes for having to reform SENA, Southern European & Northern African OISTAT Scenography and Theatre Technology Forum, into a digital version: not exactly what we intended. As was having to postpone the plans for the Conference by Candlelight in Sweden. And yet, 2020 has been a year of great OISTAT activity, I dare say: more than ever. I skipped twelve already planned travels, but attended well over a hundred international meetings in return. That took some flexibility to integrate in my routines, but very quickly the advantages became evident. Practical ones: no loss of time because of travelling and everything that comes with it, far less trouble getting agendas online, a quicker response to discussions that were usually saved up for a meeting a couple of weeks ahead. But what came as a cherry on the pie, was that many new friends connected to OISTAT, as a result of the accessibility of the events: all of a sudden it became simple to just log in and join an OISTAT gathering. I’m impressed by all the initiatives that erupted right from the beginning of the pandemic. Amongst others: Education Week on Remote Teaching & Learning, a very interesting and well attended event, on exchanging ways of teaching in lockdown situations. Designers on Design, a weekly meeting with a renowned (lighting) designer, organized by the Lighting Design sub-commission. Friday drinks with the Sound Design sub-commission. Inspiring meetings from the Space Design sub-commission. In short: a lot of online open activities from every commission: meetings, presentations, knowledge exchanges.
SENA online forum turned out to be a well-attended success, with inspiring sessions and commission meetings. Multiple meetings and fruitful discussions with the Executive Committee and the Governing Board kept the leadership in shape. A novelty, tested by the Architecture commission: successful elections online. Altogether almost too many activities to visit, and certainly too many to name them all in this report. My conclusion is: OISTAT is looking back on a year bubbling with activities, welcoming many new friends, which otherwise probably would not have been found. Headquarters played an important role in engaging this new era, and certainly deserves a compliment for rapid adjustment to the situation, answering many questions and facilitating all those online activities. Of course, OISTAT is one in the field of many who had to switch to a digital platform, and our partners in the theatre world also actively engaged in online meetings. I joined the online General Assembly of ITI, the UNESCO theatre organization, with which our bonds were refreshed and tightened. It was a pleasure to see all partner organizations! Also, I virtually attended several symposia in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Romania. I visited an African online congress, listening to stories from Kenya, Ghana, Botswana. I joined presentations and discussions organized by USITT, and visited the very interesting Tbilisi Biennale online. I talked to friends and partners, either by Zoom, chats or via social media. In short: so many inspiring encounters, so many new contacts … this year was not lost at all. It brought new chances and opportunities.
5
As the pandemic still continues, we cannot wait for everything to pass and get on with our life the way it was before. And to my opinion, we shouldn’t. OISTAT’s mission lying ahead is to adjust the organization to this new perspective, and consolidate this new way of working. It wasn’t just the pandemic that urged us to reconsider. We have witnessed the rise of political issues all over the world that came with severe consequences. Animosity and polarisation are being fired up. We’ve seen the Black Lives Matter movement coming up, resulting in a worldwide challenge to look in the mirror and question ourselves: what do we stand for? Although we are but theatre people, we have the task to stand up, in our own way. Let’s pledge ourselves to work harder to include all theatre friends, whoever and wherever, and to celebrate differences. After all, it is because of diversity in its broadest sense that OISTAT exists. Let’s stay together, supporting each other no matter what, and let art be the silent engine that heals; we have a heritage to defend. Let theatre be the source of inspiration and hope and the instrument to make the world a better place. Like every year, I’d like to thank you, OISTAT friends, for your hard work, relentless optimism, and ongoing drive. Be careful, stay healthy, stay safe.
