YEAR-END REPORT FROM PRESIDENT Dear OISTAT friends! Last year I remarked that it seems to get increasingly busy for OISTAT, and this proved to be a fact. Quite a year! Let me take you back to the OISTAT happenings in 2019, as seen from my personal point of view. In January, EC colleagues Marina, Kevin and myself kicked off by travelling to Warsaw, meeting Igor Roussanoff and Pawel Dobrzycki who organized ‘Costume at the Turn of the Century 1990 - 2015’ at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Not having been able to visit the original exhibition in Moscow the year before, this was a great opportunity. We had the chance to meet the Vice-Minister of Culture and made the Academy an OISTAT Associate member. The EC convened in March, in Porto. As is customary, we planned a meeting at a new OISTAT Centre, and APCEN proved to be perfect for that. Apart from regular business and finances (satisfying and stable), we looked into a possible next contract with Taiwan, on which HQ had worked steadily. We made preparations for the Congress and Forum at PQ in Prague, and worked on Statutes and upcoming elections. We also discussed our Adjudication and Inclusion Policy, and membership strategy. Next stop: March, USITT in Louisville, Kentucky, to as customary convene and align with the board of USITT. It offered a good opportunity to meet OISTAT people at that side of the world. In spring, good news came from Taipei: the new contract assuring OISTAT Headquarters’ stay in Taiwan until the end of 2025 was ready! On May 28, the Deputy Minister of Culture and I signed the contract. And of course - I try to visit HQ at least 2 times a year I met Wan-Jung and her team, this time to prepare the upcoming Prague-meetings. Mid-2019 many events took place. First, EC member Kevin Rigdon and I attended the opening of the impressive exhibition ‘Innovation Costume of the 21st Century: The

Next Generation’, at A.A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in Moscow. A fine example of cooperation, creating an event that can be branded as a joint achievement. Then: directly to Prague, to PQ and the OISTAT Forum. As always, a multitude of OISTAT people gathered for the inspiring event. Studio ALTA was a good choice for us to escape turbulence and concentrate on meetings. The ‘OISTAT Forum: The Next 50 Years’ was a success and proof of engagement of members. We received valuable feedback. The Statutes were changed, and Norway (CREO) and the Society of Israeli Theatre Designers became an official OISTAT Centre. Elections were held for Performance Design, Research commissions, Lighting Design and Costume Design sub-commissions. A heart-felt thank you to the previous Chairs: Markéta Fantová, David Wilmore and Nick Moran. Simona Rybáková was re-elected Chair of the Costume Design sub-commission. We also laid the basis for SENA: Southern European & Northern African OISTAT Scenography and Theatre Technology Forum, planned to happen in October 2020 in Cairo. Our Prague adventure concluded festively with the ‘Fiesta: Meeting OISTAT’ (organized by The Theatres of Latin America). Next stop: Berlin, for Stage | Set | Scenery and the ‘RoundTable on International Cooperation’ and meetings of the Education and Publication & Communication commissions. I travelled to Berlin by joining the Historic Theatre Tour, to experience a wealth of amazing theatres – always a pleasure to join the Architecture commission. In Prague, we had met with representatives from the Shanghai Theatre Academy to discuss a possible Education Conference in Shanghai in 2020. As a result, William Kenyon and I visited Shanghai in September, to further investigate whether this joint conference on ‘Global Methods of Theatre Education’ was feasible. From Shanghai I flew on to Taiwan to visit HQ once more, to prepare for our upcoming EC/GB meetings. Mid- October, at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, iSTAN conference (International Stage Art Network) was held. EC colleagues Marina, Kevin and I attended and contributed with presentations. A good opportunity to get acquainted with activities of our ITI colleagues. In November, in Oslo at our brand-new member centre ‘CREO’, we convened for our EC/ GB meetings. Apart from business, the goal was to take time together to reflect on OISTAT and its future. It was useful and inspiring. Finally, I concluded this year’s OISTAT activities by travelling to Shanghai again, to join the ITI Partner Organization Meeting; an initiative to create more coherence between the international partners. It was an interesting conference, where we learned more about our mutual activities and goals, and confirmed the bond we have as “Official Partner Organization of ITI-UNESCO”. Our partners consider OISTAT to be a respected, solid and big international and well organized organization. Hey: we knew, but always nice to hear it said out loud ;-) I’m looking forward for OISTAT to be successful, inclusive and inspiring in 2020. I wish to thank everyone for your hard work, relentless optimism, and ongoing drive for our organization.
