OISTAT IN 2021
YEAR-END REPORT Dear OISTAT friends! 2021 was the year we dreamed would bring us back to a “new normal”, drop our masks, go to live events, make live events, travel with less restrictions, meet loved ones we haven't seen for a long time, shake hands, hug, make our smile visible not only with our eyes ... RE-CONNECT. However, 2021 woke us up to another phase of Covid 19… 20… 21… Beta, Delta, Omicron…. Yet we stay together. The prolonged pandemic once again ruined those dreams of ours, but even so, we cannot say that it was a year to forget, nor wasted. Gradually, throughout the year, we saw the ease of restrictions and even if it wasn't the end of the pandemic, we were in another phase, learning to live with it safely. We are aware that within a global organization it was not the same all over the world. While in some countries people were quickly getting the free pass to freedom - the vaccine - in other countries the situation was critical, many people were still fearing their lives, for the lives of their relatives and friends, and the isolation. In this scenario, the distance between territories was no longer measurable in meters or miles, and borders became even stricter. At the end of the year, however, we could see these distances and differences diminishing and renewed hope for a new year that will bring us a fresh start. OISTAT's mission continues to adjust the organization to this new world order and to consolidate new ways of managing. As a global community of artists and theatre makers, it is important that we stand together in the face of adversity, supporting each other. The unprecedented situation did not paralyze OISTAT. If in 2020 we learnt new ways to work in this context, in 2021 we moved forward to make it even better, more accessible and yet another remarkable year. OISTAT activities in 2021, as a result of the participation and commitment of its members, are outstanding. We had the second edition of Education Week , organized by Education commission; the Theatre Design Salon , to celebrate World Theatre Day organized by World Stage Design 2022 and OISTAT; all the preparation and online events regarding the WSD 2022 including the launch of the 3rd edition of Technical Invention Prize; the
YEAR-END REPORT FROM PRESIDENT
M T O N R E F SID E R P 11th edition of Theatre Architecture Competition and the Scenofest Common Project. The commissions and sub-commissions remained quite busy and active as usual; I had the opportunity to attend some of the meetings, such as one of the three online meetings of Architecture commission where inspiring presentations took place; Performance Design commission in which the open call for projects for WSD 2022 had a great response from its members; and meetings of other commissions such as Research, Publication and Communication, among others. Basecamp has been a useful platform that allows us to keep up-to-date with the organization and serves as a space for continuous contribution to ongoing work and activities of the commissions and sub-commissions.

My involvement with the SENA project continues, a debrief after SENA2020 online Forum demonstrated that this very young OISTAT project has great potential to continue and expand; during 2021 we discussed opportunities to carry out the project every two years and it is likely that SENA will take place in October 2022 in Morocco and then in 2024, location TBD. I also had the opportunity to follow some other activities organized by OISTAT members in their countries, such as the Iberian Dialogues, by APCEN – OISTAT Portugal Centre – which proposes sharing between Portuguese and Spanish creators; The Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival, curated by members of OISTAT Egyptian Centre; and I was honoured to be a guest at the Lviv Quadrennial Scenography- International Symposium 2021, in a shared online panel with Kate Burnett. OISTAT ─ IN ─ 2021
With the postponement of WSD 2021 to 2022, the OISTAT World Congress continued as planned and took place in October 2021, standing out for its first online edition and simultaneous translation in three languages: Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish, bringing together participants from 50 countries in a six-day event. For the first time, the EC and OISTAT president elections were held online. Congratulations to the newly elected EC members
PRESI DENT ABY C OHEN
and to those re-elected for another term, it has been a pleasure working with you all since then. We also had elections for the Chairs of Education commission and Space Design sub-commission. Once again, I want to thank you all for your trust and support in electing me to serve as your president for a four-year term. It is a great honour to lead the organization as the first Latino/Brazilian president in the history of OISTAT. My special thanks to Associação Portuguesa de Cenografia – APCEN for the nomination. As stated in my first letter as your president, I look forward to strengthening direct communication with OISTAT Centres and its members, Associate members and Individual members, seeking a horizontal management, taking advantage of this moment that provides facilities to expand communication, dialogue, access, inclusion and participation. In the few months since the World Congress, meetings with the OISTAT Centres and members have already been held and scheduled; in this first phase, I had online meetings with members from the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Czech Republic and colleagues from Prague Quadrennial. For the beginning of 2022, some travels are already planned to meet the OISTAT Centres and their members: in the United States –
All these works and activities at OISTAT would not be possible without the dedicated work and support of our Headquarters Team, who has been playing a key role in keeping us organized and connected, maintaining and supporting many activities and requirements. HQ Team’s availability, kindness, professionalism and the many late hours present in all online sessions are admirable. It has been a pleasure to work more closely with this Team in my new role. Thank you! I would like to welcome the new members: the Brazilian Professional Association of the Performance Spatialities, Visualities and Sounds – OISTAT Brazil Centre, OSAT (the Netherlands), which stands for “consultation between the professional field and stage technical education”, Amin Boudrika (Morocco), Daniel Belton (New Zealand), Emmanouela Vogiatzaki Krukowski (Greece), Isabela Tavares (Brazil), Jethro Joaquin (the Philippines), Katarina Rozvadska (Slovakia), Maria Konomi (Greece), Nadia Moroz Luciani (Brazil), Pukkaporn Pimsarn (Thailand), Rodrigo Guadarrama (Mexico), Tarik Ribh (Morocco) and Yasmin Abo Fakher (Syria).

In 2021 we lost some dear friends, who will forever be in the history of OISTAT and to whom I express my deep admiration. Let us celebrate the living memory of these three great women in the history of OISTAT: Maija Pekkanen – Former President of OISTAT; Naiema Agamy – Egyptian Costume and Set Designer; and Evcimen Perçin – Former President and Founder of the OISTAT Turkish Centre.
OISTAT IN 2021
Thank you, to all dear friends of OISTAT, for your incredible work, collaboration and resilience in the face of these turbulent times. As I write this report in the midst of an announced conflict in the world, I hope for peace and, more than ever, that we stay together and get through another challenging time in our journey. Let's stay connected all over the world. Stay healthy and safe. I look forward to seeing you soon online and/ or in person and celebrating World Stage Design 2022 in Calgary!
