A big HELLO to all of our loyal readers, and also to those of you who may have picked up our magazine for the first time. This issue of Okanagan HOME is jam-packed with breathtaking home features, Okanagan living at its finest and festive inspiration for the holiday season. It is no secret that wine culture is a big part of our lifestyle here in the Okanagan. This is never more apparent than in our fall wine harvest season. Our cover story beckons you to take a closer look at this way of life. A double home feature showcases the private Naramata Bench residence of local winemaker, Ian MacDonald, as well as the executive suite he had built for guests of his Liquidity Winery property in Okanagan Falls. Both homes are so picturesque and idyllic that we couldn’t choose just one! Going into the festive holiday season, this issue would not be complete without some seasonal décor inspiration. Our Deck The Halls In Style! feature delivers in a BIG way. Homeowner Dana Hobbs gives us a peek into her personal holiday design style. Her residence brings holiday cheer in spades, each elaborate room presenting its own theme. This home is sure to have a festal design element for everyone - even the Grinch would be merry! It’s time that we let the rest of this issue speak for itself. You are officially invited to curl up in a cozy spot with your favourite steaming hot beverage and let our pages take you into the New Year. See you in 2016,

MARKET REVIEW Sales of all property types are up by 5.5% year-over-year and total residential sales were the same as last year at 798.
Undeterred by typical slow summer months, the OkanaganShuswap market remained steady in August of 2015. Despite smoky conditions, it was the strongest month for August since 2007. The summer activity in most regional markets was high and will continue to trend upward heading into fall. Dwindling inventory and high demand infer a sellers’ market. Rock bottom interest rates and an improvement in local employment and economic conditions resulted in a noticeable lift in consumer confidence and has elevated activity in the marketplace with the Okanagan-Shuswap market keeping pace with other markets in BC. On an average, homes are selling faster this year, within 88 days, in comparison to the same eight-month period last year at 104 days.
There were 1,344 new listings in August 2015, compared to 1,360 listings in the same period last year, a decline of 1.2%.
Homes in the Shuswap are being snapped up by locals, retirees, and those looking for a lifestyle change. In the Central Okanagan, some segments are seeing a shortage of inventory, and are moving into sellers’ market conditions. The North Okanagan saw a decline in single-family residential sales; however, last year saw brisk sales activity that outpaced the two other zones.
Central Okanagan sales in single-family homes are up 12% compared to August 2014 and up 11% year-over-year.
TO M S T R AT TO N
ELEVATED ACTIVITY 23.4%
North Okanagan posted a decline of 19% in single-family home sales and down 9% in year-over-year sales. Average number of days to sell a single-family home is 93 days, compared to 91 days in August of 2014.
Shuswap sales in single-family homes rose 19% compared to August 2014 and increased 16% year-over-year.

DESIGN You may be surprised to learn that the modular or pre-fab industry has made huge strides around the world and is now a viable alternative to site built houses. Thanks to publications such as Dwell, people are learning about the time saving benefits and cost savings of ordering manufactured homes. The success of this industry is attributed to quality control, efficiency and cost savings. As a designer and builder for the past 35 years I can attest to the inefficiencies of building on site. There are issues with weather, storing materials, theft, fire, site safety and coordination to name a few!
building these homes is similar to mobile homes, they differ in that mobile homes are not usually placed on foundations and very limited to their shape and size. A modular home on the other hand has no limitations to the style, shape or form. The design can be done in house by the manufacturer or outsourced by a designer or architect. As with purchasing or building any home, it is crucial to do your research. However, the effort may well be worth it if you are interested in a quick possession and saving money.
Imagine trying to build a car outside at some remote site. Firstly you would need to get permits and organize a way to get electricity and services there so you could use tools and machines. Then have parts shipped from all over the world in a logical sequence on an as-needed bases. Next you would sub out all the workers and have those trades travel to the site. Remember they all have other cars to build so can you imagine the logistical nightmare and potential cost over runs! A modular home is one that is built indoors in a factory-like setting. The finished modules are transported to their new locations where they are placed on a foundation and completed on site. These homes are often called factory-built homes, system-built or pre-fab homes. While the process of

FALL’ING INTO WINTER Have you ever noticed that at the end of August everyone is saying that summer is over and fall is here? It seems like a natural conclusion based on the crispness of the morning air and the kids going back to school. Along with some cooler temps comes the thought of starting up the fireplace or furnace and starting to watch your favourite Netflix TV series. In spite of all this, I’d rather keep summer around – endless summer nights, riding my motorcycle and floating on the lake. Okay, so now that the tears are gone, the inevitable happens and we must plan for a more energy conscience home for the winter. So what does this mean? Most people know of the basics of changing furnace filters and even maybe getting the furnace ducts cleaned and the furnace serviced. These are all good things. Have you ever thought about getting a home energy evaluation or audit? Did you know your home consists of many inter-connected parts that contribute to energy efficiency? A few of the key items to have examined are insulation, air leakage and furnace and ductwork. There is a rebate program running by BC Hydro and FortisBC called “HERO” (Home Energy Rebate Offer) that will give you money back for making improvements to your home. This program is really a win-win for everyone. In order to measure or audit your home, you will need to hire a Licenced Energy Advisor.

There is an old saying that we all have heard and possibly haven’t used in a while, but I firmly believe applies here, that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Granted in old homes we are essentially “curing” the problems, but really we are preventing further losses. MODERNIST NOD TO ICONIC RETRO DESIGN WHEN LIQUIDITY WINERY PRESIDENT AND ART COLLECTOR, IAN MACDONALD BEGAN DESIGNING HIS HOME ON THE NARAMATA BENCH AND SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE VIP SUITE AT HIS OKANAGAN FALLS WINERY, HIS PASSION FOR 50’S AND 60’S ITALIAN MODERN DESIGN TOOK THE LEAD. WRITTEN BY LAURA GOLDSTEIN WINERY VIP SUITE PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMA PETER PHOTOGRAPHY THE HOME PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIS NICOLAY PHOTOGRAPHY
Ian MacDonald was influenced by the same iconic interiors and furniture that helped make the AMC TV show, Mad Men a retro hit. “I worked in advertising for many years in Montreal, but without all that drinking and smoking in Mad Men,” laughs MacDonald. “What that experience did give me was an appreciation for art and layout, all driven by branding. I’ve applied that knowledge and need to engage the public at Liquidity Winery, through all aspects of design, landscaping, sculpture, food and wine working together, even before one enters the front door.” It was a small 1,240 square-foot bungalow built in the 50s on an 8.5-acre property on the Naramata Bench that caught MacDonald’s eye. Sitting atop a steep embankment, with spectacular views of Okanagan Lake, he saw the potential immediately. A 70 year-old boathouse, MacDonald has since renovated, was a bonus. He dubbed the property “Flying Leap” because it was a leap of faith to build on gullied land that could be problematic. “We tried to save the foundation but some of those slopes had geotechnical issues that could be susceptible to water damage, so building was driven by a design challenge of using the existing footprint, says Nicholas Hill, President, Ritchie Contracting & Design Ltd., who also built Liquidity Winery and its VIP re-vamp. The triumvirate of MacDonald, Hill and Connie Young of Connie Young Design, Calgary, had already worked together on the Liquidity Winery build in 2012. “We understood Ian’s vision, paying homage to modern winemaking, architecture and design, as well the importance of his collections of art and vintage furniture pieces. The collaborative challenge was how to translate all of that into his personal home,” Young explains. Their solution was to design and build a 3,000 square-foot, split-level, steel and beam contemporary home with an imposing cement cantilevered 2nd floor. MacDonald asked Hill to dig-out the basement for two guest bedrooms, a media room and small galley kitchen with a cedar and glass walkout to the terrace. “I love it because it looks like a big art gallery,” enthuses MacDonald. “I wanted a box that would be like a big viewfinder to the panoramic scenery here.” “It was a crazy time in 2013 because as Nick was building the house in Naramata, I was staying in the VIP suite at Liquidity Winery that was also under construction, MacDonald admits.

THE HOME A custom floating zig-zag walnut staircase leads from the split-level and front door up to the open concept 42 square-foot by 22 square-foot great room, a minimalist’s sanctuary. Facing west, floor-to-ceiling triple-glazed windows allow an eagle eye view for miles along Okanagan Lake. Motorized shades can easily shutter the summer’s intense dry heat, while some windows open to catch a cross-breeze. “It’s a sleek, timeless look and its beauty truly is in the details that are mostly hidden from the viewer,” says Hill. “There is absolutely no trim in the great room and the kitchen and cabinets, by Vancouver’s Room8, have no pulls. The walnut cabinets hide the fridge and a coffee bar, behind which is a pantry.” Two large islands, one with a composite sink molded right into it for prepping; the other a walnut slab dining table with pull-up white Spoon bar chairs by Kartell, provide front row seats to the best art show in town – nature. Like an endless infinity pool, the seamless, polished salt and pepper textured cement floor with radiant heating, seamlessly meets white walls (no baseboards) throughout the home. They are the perfect neutral canvas for MacDonald’s extensive art collection. “We took our inspiration from Ian’s abstract painting, Arbutus II by John Dann. In fact the wide black glass fireplace was designed specifically to accommodate the positioning of the painting above it and really makes the great room sing,” says Young. Other pops of colour that punctuate the otherwise stark white great room, are found in the vivid woven sari silk area rug by Eilersen (not pictured), leather Baxter furniture and fuchsia beanbag chair by Pianca. The great room segues into a small office library and powder room. But it’s the 14-foot sunken tub in the master bedroom, framed by 7-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, that’s the biggest wow-factor with friends who visit MacDonald’s home. ”Actually, we’ve noticed that this look of the tub in the bedroom, is a growing trend among our clients and we’ve created a niche for ourselves when we build them into contemporary homes, says Ritchie’s, Nicholas Hill. “Ian and I custom picked the statuary Carrara marble surrounding the tub, in Vancouver. We also used it in the adjoining ensuite’s walk-in shower and for the vanity located between a private water closet with built-in cabinetry, and the shower.” “It’s certainly a way to be fully immersed with the spectacular views,” jokes MacDonald “and I’m far enough away from other properties to not have to worry about privacy.”
LIQUIDITY WINERY VIP SUITE “The modern architecture, design and build of the VIP suite really follows the same natural flow from that in Ian’s home and the winery,” Young explains.

The great room segues into a small office with Ritchie custom built shelves for a library and around the corner, a small powder room.
Built one floor above the Bistro and Tasting Room to accommodate his business partners or visiting artists, the 1,500 square-foot open concept two-bedroom luxury suite is almost like living right in the vineyards! Light streams through the floor-to-ceiling windows framing the undulating slopes, with a private lap pool and terrace below. Says Young, “You know, Ian has this knack of bringing in just the right people to realize his parallel design strategy for both properties and it really worked. ”

MASTER SUITE TOP & BOTTOM LEFT (OPPOSITE PAGE); LEFT (THIS PAGE): MacDonald lets the view do the talking in his private Naramata residence. The minimalist master bedroom features its own walk-out to a private terrace. The 14-foot sunken tub set in Carrara marble in the master suite is framed by 7-foot floor-to-ceiling windows and is a real wow factor! Connie Young added pops of burnt orange with the Peter Pierobon Serpentine plumb pendant, Kozai Modern, Vancouver and scatter cushions on the Baxter Italia Paris bed. Baxter Italia cowhide chair in corner. Echoing MacDonald’s framed charcoal etchings, he and Nicholas Hill hand picked exquisite Carrara marble for the master ensuite, including the walk-in shower with two showerheads. The marble pillar embedded half-way into the shower’s glass encases a wand for water temperature controls. Walnut vanity cabinetry. The water closet is enclosed in its own space with large built-in wall-to-wall closets located opposite the vanity. KITCHEN TOP: “I’m not a cook and I’m a clean freak. Maybe that’s why I’m not married,” jokes MacDonald. HIGHER LEARNING IN THE OKANAGAN THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA’S OKANAGAN CAMPUS, KNOWN AS UBC OKANAGAN, HAS MADE ITS WAY TO THE TOP OF THE LIST FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS ALIKE WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING A UNIVERSITY TO ATTEND. A SMALL CAMPUS, INVOLVEMENT WITH COMMUNITY, AND AN EXCELLENT CURRICULUM MAKE UBC OKANAGAN A FAVOURITE FOR STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD. WRITTEN BY DARCY NYBO
SIZE MATTERS Bud Mortenson, Director of University Relations for UBC Okanagan knows having a smaller campus is a draw for some students. “Our campus is small enough that you might find yourself waiting in line for your coffee with one of your professors,” says Mortenson. “There are 14 graduate programs at UBC Okanagan and 53 undergraduate programs. With a total enrolment of about 8,400 students, you have more contact with your professors, fellow students, community partners and the wider community. We’ve noticed more families are moving to Kelowna with their children so they can attend UBC Okanagan.” UBC Okanagan is a research-intensive university and the number of students from outside the Okanagan is impressive. “Most of the students are from somewhere other than the Okanagan,” says Mortenson. “The parents are very pleased with what they see here. We are a destination for students who want a UBC degree. We are looking at preliminary enrolment numbers for the year and we’ve gone past 1,000 international students from 92 countries.” One of the great things about UBC Okanagan is that the campus is very walkable. “Most of our students are about a five-minute walk from their next class. Some of the residences are further out, but even from there, it’s not much more than a five-minute walk.” The campus is set on 500 acres, of which half is used for the main campus. The rest is either farm land or pure nature: forests, grassland and a trail network that is walked/biked in every season.

CONNECTING WITH COMMUNITY Students, parents and those looking into attending UBC Okanagan are impressed when they see the level of community engagement with the campus. “We have a number of partnerships in the region that work with our students,” says Mortenson. “In our management and engineering programs there is a co-op where they work with businesses in the region. For example, the nurses do practica here, as do our education students. There are lots of opportunities for third year undergrads to participate in research and apply for a grant and take on a research project under the guidance of a faculty member.” The community is also responsible for much of what is taught here. “Our School of Engineering came to be because the engineering firms in the region were keen to see it here. The Faculty of Applied Science established a school here and it has grown in extraordinary ways. It was accredited within five years and it offers civil, electrical and mechanical engineering programs,” says Mortenson. “The Southern Medical Program is part of the Faculty of Medicine’s distributed program around BC. We have campuses at UBC Okanagan and at Kelowna General Hospital. This past May, the first class of 30 medical students trained here in the BC Interior graduated with their MDs. They are now in residency training in places across Canada.”

LIVING OFF AND ON CAMPUS Approximately 1,700,, comprised mostly of first year students, live on campus. “We have quad suites (four students per unit) and single rooms in dormitory style,” explains Mortenson. “The buildings here are almost all less than 10 years old. They are single rooms, not shared. Kitchen and washrooms are shared on each floor. The quad units are similar to a four-bedroom condo, with shared living and washroom space.” Students looking for other housing options within a 5-minute walk to class are considering renting or owning in the University District. While technically off campus, the University District is almost closer to class than on campus residences. The newest community, U-Two, offers parents of university students a chance to be their own landlord. Further, many people looking for a healthy investment opportunity near this growing UBC Okanagan campus are also considering purchasing a condo at U-Two. “The neighbourhoods around the campus are burgeoning,” says Mortenson. “There’s an exciting future for this part of the city. We’ve been here for 10 years and things are just getting started.”
For students who live outside the area, there is bus service throughout Kelowna, as well as buses that run to and from Vernon and West Kelowna.
ON CAMPUS LIFESTYLE The campus hosts about 200 public events either on campus or in the community each year. With cultural events and community dialogues ongoing, there’s usually something to do after class. “There is a very robust athletic component on campus too,” says Mortenson with pride. “Our volleyball, basketball and soccer teams play in the very competitive Canada West Division. There are activities at the Hangar Fitness and Wellness Centre as well and we have a Minds And Music series and a Distinguished Speaker series.” The campus trail network is very popular with students and faculty. There are a dozen trails on campus and hundreds more in the region. In the winter many students head up to the region’s ski hills. There are also golf courses and wineries nearby for students and their visiting families.

WHAT’S NEW AT UBC OKANAGAN The campus master plan is now being refreshed for the next 10 - 20 years. They are working to make the campus even more pedestrian friendly by having vehicle traffic only around the edges of the campus. Further, the plan proposes to more than double the current academic space on campus. They currently have leased space at the airport commercial park for their Survive and Thrive Applied Research (STAR) facility that focuses on working with the industry on research development of new ideas that could be taken to the market. “In time we hope to have a seamless boundary between the university and industry around us,” says Mortenson. “One of the hallmarks of UBC Okanagan is the experiential learning opportunities that students have by working with community projects. When industry is attracted to the area, it is good for the economy, researchers and students.

A DESTINATION FOR ALL THE SENSES IMAGINE FLOATING IN ONE OF SHERI-LEE TURNER-KROUZEL’S VINO THERAPY TREATMENTS ABSORBING ALL OF THOSE ANTIOXIDANTS (AND IF THAT DOESN’T WORK, YOU CAN ALWAYS DRINK THE TREATMENT!) WRITTEN BY LAURA GOLDSTEIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN JEWALL PHOTO STUDIOS INC.
Dreaming is what got the enterprising Sheri-Lee and husband, Curtis Krouzel into the winery business in the first place. Their 10,000 square-foot, high-tech 50th Parallel Estate Winery in Lake Country has been constructed in carefully conceived stages that will eventually include an events centre, bistro, vino therapy spa and finally rustic-chic suite rental units. In short, a world-class, all-encompassing wine destination that will captivate all the senses. “I come from a European background where wine comes before breast milk, “ laughs Krouzel, whose grandparents are involved in the Austrian wine industry. The couple met in Calgary in 2000: he started an engineering company for the oil and gas industry and she worked in the health fitness field. But like a man obsessed, Krouzel’s dream was to own a winery. “I was always thinking about that for years - researching wineries, travelling to the Okanagan and scouting for just the right property.” The first stage of their 5-phase dream became a reality in 2008, when they purchased the 61-acre property in the ‘Scenic Sip’ Lake Country region of Central Okanagan, with spectacular views of Okanagan Lake. And in 2009 they began from scratch, planting vines, predominately pinot noir. Aromatic riesling, pinot gris, and gewürztraminer followed to balance the vineyard blocks planted in unison with the undulating natural topography. Award-winning winemaker and viticulturist, Grant Stanley, (formerly of Quails’ Gate Estate Winery, West Kelowna,) joined their team in 2013 as a vested partner. The 50th Parallel Winery, with its stunning ultra modern concrete, steel and glass visage, marries form with function in its current 2nd phase. A softer look in wood and glass for Phase 3, the 10,000 square-foot events centre and bistro, begins construction this winter. The winery, designed by Hribar Design (with Sahuri + Partners Architecture Inc., Calgary,) Zeidler Partnership Architects and Scatliff Miller Murray Landscape Architects, carefully evolved after multiple concepts. The Krouzels specifically wanted the building’s architecture to reflect the importance of the winery’s name and not just a clever longitudinal branding signature. “Everything is in parallel with each other including the long, linear windows,” says Curtis. Even the 3,000 square-foot outdoor Infinity Event Pad parallels with spectacular vistas overlooking Okanagan Lake - a jaw-dropping wedding and party location.

The ‘floating’ crush pad is a remarkable cantilevered feat that had to be tied 30 feet back into the mountain’s exterior to make the complex design work. Above the six primary pinot noir fermenters hovers 30,000 pounds of concrete and 3,000 feet of steel rebar creating a one-of-a-kind crush pad that has no connectivity or support from anything below. Thus using gravity rather than mechanical pumping to allow for the gentle handling of sensitive pinot noir. The interior fermentation tank hall and tasting room could be a high-tech dance club with DJ’s up in steel balconies below the ceiling. “We’ve actually done that for events!” laughs Curtis. Dimmable LED lights suspended from the ceiling bounce off the perforated wine tank jackets to give a modern nod to the retro-mirrored disco ball. An old quonset hut of semi-circular corrugated steel discovered on the property, was saved from demolition by Turner-Krouzel to create an added dimension of textured walls. But it’s the three curvaceous hemlock wood beams, salvaged and sculpted into the beautiful 15-foot wine bar constructed through boulders of local pink granite, that really warms up the space. Artisan hand-crafted, douglas fir doors can be opened to bring in natural light. A nearby barrel room built into one of the wine caves is a multi-purpose private space for diners accommodating up to thirty-six people. A viewing portal on the ceiling sheds light over the long harvest table and a projector and drop-down screen in the ceiling are available at the touch of a button. The two entrepreneurs are extremely marketing savvy and have partnered with the nearby Sparkling Hill Resort and Spa and Predator Ridge Golf Resort to cross-promote the winery for tours and events. There is even a heliport on the property to whisk guests to and from nearby Kelowna airport. “I can’t wait for our vino-therapy spa and pool to open in 2019,” enthuses Turner-Krouzel, who has already trademarked her line of wine-skin focused body and bath products and treatments she calls ‘glamour farming‘. “We’ll go detox with fitness workouts in the vineyard and then we’ll go to the tasting room and retox,” she says laughing. Across the road from 50th Parallel Winery, the estate will continue into its final phase with a series of modern bungalows for overnight guests. “Curtis and I have travelled to Bora Bora many times, in fact, that’s where he proposed to me,” confides Turner-Krouzel. We love the way they have beautiful suites with their own plunge pools there, something we’d like to design here too.” “We haven’t just created a winery with 50th Parallel Winery Estate,” says Krouzel, “we are building a legacy.” R O V C O N S U LT I N G I N C . | S T R U C T U R A L E N G I N E E R I N G S E R V I C E S

LIGHT, LAND & LAKE VIEWS UNITE
FOR LUXURY HOME DESIGNER DENIS APCHIN, THE PLAY OF LIGHT, AND A HOME’S RELATIONSHIP TO ITS SITE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AWARD-WINNING DESIGN AND JUST ANOTHER BOX ON THE HILL. WRITTEN BY MICHAEL BERNARD PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN TALBOT PHOTOGRAPHY
Sunlight has always played an important role in the fortunes of the Okanagan Valley. The right amount of it at the right time brings a bountiful harvest, economic prosperity and an idyllic lifestyle; not enough or too much results in a meager crop, wildfires or financial hardship. That axiom is no less true for designing and building homes in the Valley. “I really preach site-specific solutions,” says Apchin, explaining how he arrived at just the right angles for sunlight and lake views in the home he designed for a couple at Carrs Landing in Lake Country. “We see so many cases in the Okanagan of people taking a $400 home plan out of a magazine and spending $100,000 on retaining walls just to accommodate it.” Apchin used Google Earth to determine the optimal angles for the home’s views, west to the lake and south to the bridge over Lake Okanagan. “It’s not a conventional square building because it has a special kickoff angle,” he says. Apchin, whose firm has claimed five Georgie Awards among other industry accolades, says his Carrs Landing clients were wonderful to deal with. “It was pretty much carte blanche. The only thing he said was, ‘This is my wife’s house. She likes to pick colours and materials. The only thing that matters to me is my garage.’” Building into the grade, Apchin came up with a unique configuration for the 1,000 square-foot garage for conventional parking for three vehicles positioned over top of a second similar-size garage for housing the owner’s collector cars and workshop. The home also boasts a unique approach to the front door, which stands at the end of a land bridge that channels the visitor to the asymmetrically walled entryway. It creates the feeling that one is walking over a moat to a private domain. BEDROOMS

Inside, Apchin made extensive use of wood-dressed steel supports to create large living spaces with spectacular fir-clad high ceilings and glass exterior walls, combined with massive 16 by 16-inch quartzite tiles in classic Okanagan tones. A large wall and fireplace block out the high elevation direct sunlight for very practical reasons: it was necessary to counter the heat gain from the light, which streams in unimpeded by the mountains across the lake. Apchin says he left much of the interior design to the lady of the home. She did a wonderful job of dividing up the large open concept main-floor interior by using free-standing walls for a kitchen facility and a bar area, positioned perpendicular to one another to create the kitchen. The home is completed by an expansive terrace surrounding an infinity-style swimming pool and hot tub, with stunning views of Lake Okanagan.

OPEN CONCEPT LIVING ABOVE & RIGHT: The windows in the kitchen and living room area take maximum advantage of south and west views of Lake Okanagan. Apchin broke up the otherwise cavernous interior mainfloor space by positioning the kitchen and bar components perpendicular to one another. Row of clerestory windows on the wall behind exposes the home’s interior to morning sunlight. The fireplace surround acts as a wall, support for the roof and sun block on the west exposure. The combination also creates a cozy feel to the living area.

DECK THE HALLS IN STYLE! WHEN DANA HOBBS WAS CONTACTED IN 2014 TO SEE IF SHE’D LIKE TO DECORATE HER HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND THAT IT WAS FOR CHARITY, SHE JUMPED AT THE CHANCE. WRITTEN BY DARCY NYBO PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEGEND PHOTOGRAPHY & DESIGN
“I used to be in the film industry and love to design,” says Dana Hobbs. “I liked the challenge and I decorated it all on my own. I have a passion for decorating and I love to entertain.” Hobbs’ home was one of several on the 2014 Hot Holiday Homes Tour. With 25-foot ceilings and 7,000 square feet to decorate, Hobbs started three weeks before the open houses. She was able to use many of her own decorations to transform the house into a winter holiday wonderland. She also decorated the 1,000 square-foot Tuscan cabana and the grounds of the home to give it a truly festive feel. The Christmas tree collection placed on the ledge above the great room is Hobbs’ own collection and she brings it out every year. “They are all in silver and white and are various sizes. We added holly and lights around the upstairs railing to add festive cheer from above and below.” Hobbs has an impressive collection of candleholders, some of which are Swarovski crystal. She placed them strategically on the fireplace mantle, behind the sectional in the great room and on the dining room table to add a cheery winter glow to the rooms. She brought live pine boughs in from her yard to complete the look she wanted. Upstairs, her master suite decorations were inspired by an owl she had living outside her window a few years ago. “It was wonderful to watch those eight fluffy white babies,” says Hobbs. “I envisioned this whole room as owls. The entire tree was draped in white boa features intertwined with white and brown owls.” “The last thing I did was the real tree because I wanted to keep it alive and up for

Christmas,” says Hobbs. The 20-foot tall tree was brought in to be the focal point of the home. It was 11-feet in diameter and took four people to carry it in. “It took us three days to decorate that one tree,” says Hobbs. “We had to place sandbags at the base of the tree and then we fastened it to the wall to make sure it was secure.” The tree decorations were inspired by nature. “We had approximately 20 different types of white, silver and red birds featured on the main tree. There are grape clusters within the tree and feather balls. The oversize sheer silver wired ribbons were used to create the bows.” Hobbs used light blue balls, which have been in her family for 20 years, as accent pieces. Red berries and grapes tie it all together. Using her own decorations and décor, and some from local suppliers, Hobbs transformed her home into a holiday home experience like no other.

THE VIRTUES OF BEING A SHOWOFF IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR DIRECTION WHEN IT COMES TO BUILDING A NEW HOME, THE NEW CHATHAM HOMES BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED SHOWHOME AT THE TOP OF WILDEN SKYLANDS IS A GREAT PLACE TO START, WITH ITS VIEW OVER DOWNTOWN KELOWNA AND LAKE OKANAGAN. WRITTEN BY DEVON BROOKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KODIAK BC
For the many who do visit, they love how the quarter-acre lot has been moulded to minimize lawn care, while providing for an expanse of outdoor activities. Perhaps they find the modern exterior with a mixture of Kettle Valley granite field and ledge stone and cedar strip highlights warmly inviting. An aluminum-framed glass wall displays the cedar-lined entranceway, crowned by a bright Swarovski crystal chandelier (the same crystals used to such dazzling effect at Sparkling Hill Resort). Just past the entrance with its 11-foot ceiling is the opendesign kitchen and main living space, which “is a skillful blend of clean modern design juxtaposed with rich distressed elements.” The kitchen boasts a six-burner gas range, three ovens, a huge island with an elegantly durable quartz countertop, and a butler’s kitchen where the mess of a big meal preparation can be conveniently hidden away. The floors are real hardwood maple, treated with a diluted acid to give them a carefully crafted patina that barely shows the heavy use they are subjected to in a show home. Mike Chatham, son of Chatham Homes well-respected founder, Dave Chatham, will take you on a whirlwind tour of the other delights including: in-floor heating to keep the winter chill off your feet, the main outdoor entertainment deck complete with a fieldstone dressed fireplace, a sound system dividing the house into six zones run by wall controls about the size of a thermostat and the master suite with striking corner windows providing a lake view. The ensuite includes a luxurious stand-alone tub, a separate tiled shower and a walkin closet big enough to get lost in. Despite its many clever amenities and charms Chatham insists, “This home isn’t for

CASH CRAWFORD CASH CRAWFORD. REMEMBER THAT NAME - YOU’LL BE HEARING A LOT OF IT IF YOU’RE A COUNTRY MUSIC FAN. WRITTEN BY DARCY NYBO
Cash just placed third in the BC Country Music Association’s, Artist Development Project. Before that she was a semi-finalist on Canadian Idol. This BC country crooner got her start in a small church in Pritchard, between Kamloops and Vernon. To say she started young would be an understatement. “My parents have tapes of me singing in my high chair before I was speaking full sentences,” says Cash. “I was singing songs before I could talk properly.” Cash grew up singing in church and in school. “I was always throwing coffee table concerts and singing for my family, or outside singing for the animals,” she recalls. All this before she hit double digits. By the time she was 11 she had her first band.
Cash has made Kelowna one of her home bases, the other being Vancouver. Cash can be likened to the troubadours of old, as she never appears to be in one place very long. “I’m going to Nashville for the month of October to write with a bunch of different writers. I’ve been there a couple times, so I’m going to reconnect with all of my networks down there,” she says. “Then I’ll be releasing a second single and doing a radio tour, and then doing another tour with some musician friends across North America.” Cash loves the nomadic lifestyle that being a full time musician offers her. “My plan is to get a tour bus and tour around and make music for the rest of my life. I’d rather live like a gypsy and be happy with what I do. I’d love to have a different view out my window every day.” Cash’s says her style is more on the rock side of country. “I love lots of harmonies like Rumours record by Fleetwood Mac. I like Motown and classic rock. I guess you could say my style is more like 70s country or southern rock. Some of the stuff I’m doing right now is pretty poppy. I do have a pop side to my writing, but for the most part it’s roots and blues, 70s-type music. I’m trying to bring back the authentic sound of music as performed by real musicians without auto tune.” When Cash was on Canadian Idol, she met winner Theo Tams. Following the show, she moved to Ontario and joined his band, Beyond the Mountain. “We won best singer/songwriter for the Toronto Independent Music Awards and did a lot of touring. I moved back to Vancouver in 2013 to start working on my solo career and came to Kelowna in the summer of 2015.” Cash’s latest single, Barefoot In The Backyard, perfectly captures her style and her goals. “I want to give young women a positive role model. Some of my more serious stuff is about realizing that no matter what you go through in life, as long as you have a good foundation, you can go on. It’s not about the stuff we collect.” Cash is also quite traditional, but not at the expense of inequality. “I love the women out there that dress conservatively and sing empowering songs. Not too long ago, country music was written to put women as the shotgun rider, not the driver. Now we are more the driver, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want someone to be with us. Women today want a partner, an equal who is not in competition. I think some men need to relearn how to be strong and stand beside their women and visa versa. And this comes out in my music.” Cash summed it up like this: “I want to be true to who I am, while finding a balance in my life. You can get Barefoot In The Backyard on iTunes. WHITE SPIRIT LODGE 525 FEATHERTOP WAY, BIG WHITE, BC | $9,200,000 | MLS 10094899 The majestic crown jewel of the Okanagan’s Big White Ski Resort with 10,000 square feet of luxury living space hand crafted by Pioneer Log Homes. The White Spirit lodge was designed around massive cedar logs rescued and salvaged from storms, oceans, and fires. Each log was hand scribed to reveal the true beauty and eternal history of the tree. Then, each log was carefully selected and placed throughout the home and enhanced with up-lighting to showcase its timeless beauty. With a castle appearance in mind, gray rundle stones were selected to give texture and strength for the mountainous feel. The heart of this home was created to enable conversation to easily flow and allow a view-orientated design to accentuate the consistent seamless connection with Mother Nature. With views of the towering triple sided old world stone fireplace, grand entry, colossal great room, and built-in wine bar, entertaining is a delight. Although the home is extreme in size, each area offers a tranquil experience to reflect with the connection of uniting the two natural environments, the home and nature, to become one.
