BY THE LIGHT OF THE GAS STATION Mutual friends played matchmaker by arranging an impromptu late-night introduction at a gas station. Drew rolled out of bed and showed up groggy and sporting a hoodie festooned with a Canadian flag pin. Melanie was less than impressed. “Drew was the complete opposite of every guy I had ever swooned over. He was too short and too skinny, his hair and eyes were too brown and what was the deal with that hoodie? Is he even Canadian?” She told her friend, no thanks. DREW’S TOP 10 Undeterred, Drew messaged Melanie via Facebook. Despite her cool response, he tried again, this time listing 10 random facts about himself ranging from his first hamster, Smokey, to his traumatic introduction to the movie “Jurassic Park.” Melanie was hooked. Their first date was to Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, where they got lost in a corn maze but found each other. NOW FOR THE SWOONING “I never thought that I would end up marrying the boy I didn’t initially swoon over,” reflects Melanie, “but when I first saw him on our wedding day, there was so much swooning! He was so handsome. He was everything I’ve ever pictured in a groom.” THE MISSING MATRIARCH Instead of a bouquet toss, the couple opted for an “Anniversary Dance” with Drew’s grandparents – the longest-married couple in the room. When the dance started, though, Drew’s grandmother, Marla, was nowhere to be found. A cousin filled in while the rest of the family scrambled to locate grandma. “The DJ had to drag out the song,’’ Melanie says, laughing at the memory. “Finally, Marla was located (in the restroom) and rushed to the dance floor to join her husband of 58 years and receive the bouquet.” SYMBOLIC SCRAPS The bride used leftover pieces of her gown (which had been altered) to wrap the stems of the bridesmaids’ bouquets and the mothers’ corsages. “It was a great way to personalize the flowers and let each woman know she was a very special part of my wedding day,” says Melanie. SILLY SIGNAGE The couple needed signage to direct guests to the ceremony, reception, lawn games, bar and restrooms. “Drew came up with ‘We Do. We Dance. We Dine. We Play. We Wee,’” Guests especially loved the latter sign, says Melanie.

P LAN Y O U R P INS Melanie wishes she had collected her wedding inspirations in a more organized manner on Pinterest. A single inspiration board made it difficult to find specific pins. “It would have been much less stressful to have categorized my pins according to ‘DIY ideas,’ ‘table decoration,’ ‘flowers,’ ‘wedding gown inspiration,’ etc."

POINT OF INSPIRATION Melanie, using a Pinterest photo as inspiration, made a guestbook “tree” by cutting leaves from scrapbook paper for guests to sign. After the wedding, the bride glued the leaves onto a canvas and added a coat of Mod Podge to seal the collage. Today the keepsake hangs in the newlyweds' living room. GOTTA LOVE THE GRANDPARENTS Because the couple has a 2-year-old son, they don’t always take time for themselves. Melanie’s dad and stepmom came up with a clever solution. Each month on the date corresponding with their wedding, the newlyweds receive a gift card from them redeemable for date-night babysitting services. Melanie's reaction: “Best. Gift. Ever!” MORE S’MORES, PLEASE! Guests had a fun dessert option: S’mores around a roaring campfire. “It was perfect for an outdoor wedding as the sun set and it started to get chilly,” notes Melanie. WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT HER “I knew I was going to be stunned, but there was no preparing for it. I saw my entire life in front of me, yet everything was focused around that single moment. As soon as I saw her, every bit of nervousness went away. I thought, ‘Okay, we can do this. We can do all of this because we are together.’”

WAIT A MOMENT! Lauren and Dillon met at a party at Oklahoma City University. As Dillon was leaving, he stopped short and told his best friend (later, his best man), “Hold on, I need to get that blonde girl’s number!” SAND, SUNSET & SELFIES A trip to San Diego to visit Lauren's family included a surprise. The couple were on Coronado Island walking along the beach and snapping a flurry of selfies at sunset when Dillon bent down on one knee and proposed. HUSKERS VS. SOONERS During their wedding, Lauren and Dillon engaged in some good-humored rivalry. “We had a college fight song battle with Big Show Dueling Pianos to help raise honeymoon funds,” says the bride. “He is from Oklahoma, and I am from Nebraska. Enough said!” SWOON-WORTHY MOMENT Lauren couldn’t help but fall in love with Dillon all over again as the ceremony began. “He was whispering how beautiful I looked as ‘What a Wonderful World’ finished,” she remembers. THE PERFECT COURIER Lauren’s 2½-year-old niece, Nora, served as flower girl. When she reached the end of the aisle, she handed the groom a handwritten note from the bride. It read: "I can’t wait to kiss you.’” THE WEDDING POET LAUREATE “One of our groomsmen wrote a poem for us as a wedding gift and recited it at brunch the day after our wedding,” shares Lauren. “It was so beautiful and touching, it had us in tears. We framed it as a special keepsake.” THE FABRIC OF LIFE Guests shared their best wishes on quilt squares, which will find their way into a wedding quilt. THAT’S MAN WITH AN "O" “Dillon continuously has to spell his last name – Blackmon – so people don’t get it wrong. Now I do, too,” confesses Lauren. "People always assume it's Blackman." MAYBE IT’S A GHOST “I always know when Dillon doesn’t like where I place something in the house because it ends up in a different spot!” laughs Lauren. TOMATO/TOMAHTO “What I consider clutter, Lauren considers decoration, but it’s far easier to go along with it,” says Dillon. “I can say, though, that I really enjoy building a home together.”

ALMA MATER LOVE Hannah and Samuel met at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where they were both studying mechanical engineering and playing sports – he football, she volleyball. Samuel later proposed to Hannah under a brilliant starry sky in South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest. FORGETFUL BRIDE Hannah encountered a slight hiccup in her wedding preparations. “I realized I forgot my tiara halfway through my hair appointment and had to have my father bring it to the salon!” she laughs. “The same thing happened with my earrings when we started taking pictures.” JUST THE TWO OF THEM With all the hustle and bustle of the wedding day, the couple found their sweetest moment in an unlikely place: the limo on the way to the reception venue. “It was one of the only times we were alone together the whole day and could just enjoy being married and ridiculously happy,” Hannah recalls. PROPER RESPECTS The bride and groom’s escort table featured wedding photos of their parents, married siblings, grandparents and greatgrandparents. “It was a really fun idea that celebrated marriage in both families,” says Hannah. KEEPING TIME Ornate gold clocks were tucked into decorations at the reception, adding an elegant, antique touch to their wedding theme, “Have the time of your life.” MUSICAL CHAIRS Looking back, Hannah says the seating chart wasn’t nearly as important as it seemed in the midst of her planning. “A ridiculous amount of time was spent juggling people from table to table trying to come up with the ‘perfect chart.’ On the day of, people didn’t even spend that much time sitting in their assigned seats.” JUST A NIBBLE Hannah made the same mistake a lot of brides do. “Make sure you eat on your wedding day,” she advises. “All I had was a smoothie in the morning. By the time I got to the reception, I was ready to pass out.” MOTHER KNOWS BEST Hannah had the most reliable of wedding coordinators: her mother. “Having a mother who is also an experienced planner is a huge asset!” FOCUS ON THE BIG THINGS “No matter how much you plan, some things will not go the way you wanted them to,” says Hannah. “In the scheme of things, however, it really doesn’t matter, so don’t let the little things ruin your day.”

MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE Andy and Callie met through mutual friends and connected instantly. “We danced and talked the whole night, ending in Andy getting my number,” Callie says. ROADSIDE SERVICE Early in their courtship, Andy’s truck broke down in Callie’s driveway. Callie, though, wasn’t about to abandon her new beau in the wee hours of the morning, no matter how tired she was. “I was attempting to fix my truck, and she fell asleep holding the flashlight for me,” recalls Andy. “From that moment on, I knew she was the one.” WHEN LOVE COMES KNOCKING Andy proposed with an antique door adorned with doorknobs in different sizes. “I had been talking about how I wanted this door to hang my jewelry on,” relates Callie, “and a beautiful, shiny ring was hanging from the middle knob!” THOSE AREN’T WEDDING BELLS During the wedding toasts, Andy’s mischievous nephew left the reception area and pulled the fire alarm as a practical joke. “The fire department showed up, and when we saw who pulled the alarm, we couldn’t help but laugh,” Callie admits. “It’s a memory we will never forget!” SOUTHERN GLAM The bride’s family hails from the South, so the couple added Southern touches to their wedding décor. Among them: magnolias and monograms. FROM BAPTIZED TO BRIDE The bride’s 90-year-old grandmother baptized Callie as an infant and then officiated at her wedding. “Walking down the aisle and seeing my soon-to-be husband and my grandmother standing together was a moment that I will never forget,” shares Callie. “It was a very special choice for Andy and me.” THE GOOD BOOK A custom-made Bible served as a guest book. “Each guest took a ribbon with a piece of paper attached for writing a favorite Bible verse or special message,” explains Callie. “Andy and I are big on faith, and it’s something we will cherish forever.” BIGGEST ADJUSTMENT “One word: sharing,” laughs Callie. “Andy is a taste-tester of many different foods – especially when they’re on my plate. It’s something I’m getting use to – because in marriage, what’s mine is yours.” STRESS BUSTING The couple opted for a “first look” as a way to relieve jitters and shed happy tears before the ceremony. “It was absolutely my favorite moment of our wedding,” Callie enthuses. “Andy’s pure emotion took my breath away.”

HUSKER HOMECOMING Even though Andrew and Maggie attended the same middle and high schools, they didn’t know each other until mutual friends played matchmaker at the University of Nebraska Homecoming game in 2009. “We have been together ever since!” says Maggie. ARTFUL AVOCADO Andrew made his famous guacamole and carefully placed the ring box between crackers in the dish. “He asked me to look in the fridge and simply said, ‘Will you marry me?’” CREATIVE CUTOUTS The couple had their engagement photos taken in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and used some of the more playful poses as cardboard cutouts for their photo booth. “We kept the cutouts a secret and loved watching our guests’ reactions at the reception," shares Maggie. “Everyone loved them and had a blast in the photo booth.” ONCE IN A BLUE MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM The couple’s rehearsal dinner took place on a rare blue moon, and they married on the exact day of Midsummer. TYING THE KNOT To honor the bride’s Celtic roots, Maggie and Andrew included a traditional Celtic knot ceremony during their vows with an assist from the bride’s cousin. “She described the symbolism as she tied our hands together,” Maggie explains. “Andrew and I then read letters to each other. I don’t think there was a dry eye among our guests.” STEALING A KISS After the judge announced that Andrew could kiss the bride, the couple stole a second kiss. “The judge responded, ‘I said just one kiss,’” recounts Maggie. “Everyone laughed!” BEAUTIFUL MUSIC A bagpiper played a wedding march from the ceremony pavilion to the clubhouse. PRESENTS OF PRESENCE “We had a lot of out-of-town guests with family and friends travelling from across the country and overseas,” says Maggie. “The celebration would not have been the same without their presence.” PREPARE TO BE MERRY Maggie advises getting organized, planning well in advance and following a timeline to stay on track. “Sometimes brides get so frustrated with the planning, they let their frustration interfere with the wedding day,” she observes. “They lose the big picture. I left ample time to recover from the process. When the wedding finally arrived, there was nothing to do but celebrate, dance, laugh, sing and be merry.” RUEFUL REGRET The couple hired a calligrapher to create place cards and table numbers. “I wish we would have thought to collect them after the reception,” the bride says. They have a few but it would have been nice to have more.

Molly and Drew chose “summer” as their wedding color theme and used pink, lavender, ivory, gold and silver in their modern, elegant reception décor at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

Molly works at Omaha's zoo. The tropical colors of its aquarium complemented her wedding colors for group photos and was also the location for a couple's shower.

Molly was so intent on following the wedding ceremony as rehearsed, she missed her cue to kiss the groom.

The couple had a two-tiered custom chandelier for their reception. “It rotated above the monogram on the custom dance floor,” says Molly.

The most-played song on Molly's iTunes playlist is "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers. She took inspiration from the song for the chair signage.

Hints of Disney’s “Cinderella” found their way into a fairytaleinspired wedding cake.

Molly’s advice: Pay attention to paper! Your printed pieces say a lot about your wedding. “These can sometimes be overlooked.”

The couple commissioned Jenna Johnson to paint the reception scene in real time. Guests loved passing by her easel to see her progress.

“Whimsical, dainty, modern with a vintage twist," is how Molly describes her wedding. “I was hoping to create an atmosphere that our loved ones would never forget."

Kristah’s advice to engaged couples is to relax and enjoy the day. “It will fly by and not everything will go as planned. We had mice in the piano during our ceremony,” laughs the bride. “Our wedding was at the Willow Creek Glass Chapel which is surrounded by cornfields. Mice were inevitable – the more the merrier! The couple made a majority of the decorations themselves. Their favorite item was a piñata painstakingly assembled by cutting single petals for 120 paper flowers.

“Rustic chic” and “country rustic” were considered for themes, but the couple ultimately went with "vintage" touches in muted greens and blues.

Tea cup succulents served as favors. "The thing I love most is that they will continue to grow after our ceremony." says Kristah.

Kristah found a unique way to preserve her flowers. She used succulents. “My bouquet and his boutonnière are planted in pots in our dining room!”

Not wanting a traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for a sweet alternative from Nothing Bundt Cakes. The topper was made to resemble a succulent.

During the ceremony, Mark couldn’t slide the rings onto Kristah's finger. “Everyone laughed when I took my hand back and shoved the rings over my knuckle. So romantic!”

“You might think that ordering flowers from Etsy could be a gamble. I was concerned at first,” the bride admits. “However, after careful research, I was comfortable with my decision.”

The couple wanted a “green” wedding and printed their invitations on seed paper. They also ordered plates made from biodegradable palm leaves for their reception.

Kristah and Mark asked two attendants to use instant cameras to snap photos of guests as they entered the reception. “I can’t tell you how many times we have looked through those photos!”

The bride’s sister made a cake piñata and filled it with fortune cookies in a nod to their late father. “Going out for Chinese food was one of our favorite father-daughter activities.”

“Though the reception was in a barn, I wanted to depart from the typical ‘rustic’ look,” says Amy. “There wasn’t an inch of burlap or a mason jar in sight.” Instead, she used paper fans.

The bride’s sister tucked a giant fortune cookie into the piñata just for the couple. On the fortune were their lucky numbers – 5, 30 and 2015 – the date of their wedding.

After the ceremony, Amy and Jeff found a quiet spot away from the crowd and were treated to a private serenade by their violinists. “It was so nice to relax and soak it all in even if just for a moment."

“Bunny, our Welsh corgi, brings us so much joy!” Amy enthuses. “One of the great advantages of having our entire wedding at a bed & breakfast was that Bunny could be a part of all of it – even the reception!"

“My husband and I own a tree service, so naturally, trees are our thing,” Amy explains. Having guests sign the branches of a tree for their guest book was the perfect personal touch.

Flower power appeared throughout the décor – Amy’s flower doodle, that is. The freehand motif appeared on everything from invitations to stationery to a charming chalkboard.

“I feel that I successfully ‘branded’ our wedding,” Amy says of her flower motif. She shares a how-to for her DIY invitation gold leafing on the Wedding Essentials blog.

The cake toppers reflected Jeff’s love for trees and acorns. “Years ago, Jeff would collect bur oak acorns, plant them in his basement and create time-lapse videos as they grew,” explains Amy.

Lisa has been to more than 100 weddings since graduating from college and likes to joke that she’s a professional wedding guest. This time she was finally the bride. "First of all, I have never felt more loved, obviously by my husband, but also by everyone around us,” Lisa reflects of her big day. Che, the couple’s canine, was in cahoots with Corbin from the get-go. When he was ready to propose, the aspiring groom-to-be coaxed the pup to perch amid flowers in the bedroom.

Lisa paid homage to family matriarchs by tucking a poppy in her bouquet in honor of her grandmother and carrying a lily-of-the-valley handkerchief in a nod to the groom’s grandmother.

The cake design reflected the hobnail pattern on the milk glass used in the décor. Lisa found the cake topper on Etsy. "It was a darling way to include our beloved dog."

Lisa’s engagement ring features an 1800s hand-cut diamond. “The sapphires surrounding the stone are my husband’s birthstone,” says Lisa. The band was an estate piece.

Shortly before the wedding, the best man was diagnosed with cancer and had to miss the couple's wedding for treatment. The wedding party donned purple wrist bands to show their support.

“There is something very classy and old school about hand-lettered calligraphy,” reflects the bride. The couple’s monogram appeared on a number of elements, including custom cups.

The wedding featured plenty of 1950s and ‘60s elements. “There were tons of vintage-meets-modern details, including milk glass for reception décor,” shares Lisa.

“I have a very feisty Irish temperament,” Lisa confesses on the blog. “(Corbin’s) very good at bringing me back to center and helps put things in perspective.”

“I feel that I’ve learned something about each of these women and about marriage and life. Honoring them at my wedding was really important to me,” says Alicia Schroder.

Most women wouldn’t think of sharing the spotlight with another bride on their wedding day. Alicia Schroder made a point of it. She happily ceded attention from herself and onto not just one but seven other brides when she and husband Paul tied the knot in March 2015. “I didn’t want it to be all about me,” explains the 25-year-old pharmacist, who centers her life on faith and family. “Although a wedding is supposed to focus on the bride, I am who I am because of my family and the women who’ve come before me.” To pay homage, Alicia asked her mother and Paul's mother, her aunt and two of her grandmothers as well as Paul’s sister and sister-in-law if she could display their dresses at the wedding reception. The women happily consented, and Paul meticulously crafted seven mannequins from chicken wire, while the bride and her mother collected photos and personal reflections to be included with the cherished gowns in a “Legacy of Love.” “A woman spends a lot of time dreaming about and shopping for her wedding dress. It’s the dress she feels the most beautiful in,” Alicia observes. “She makes the biggest commitment of her life wearing this dress, and then after the wedding, it just sits in a box in a closet. "This was my way of honoring those women who have impacted our lives.”
