TUDOR EARNS A SECOND LOOK This time around, Rockbrook ‘gingerbread’ house is the right fit STORY MARJIE DUCEY PHOTOGRAPHY JEFFREY BEBEE

ylie Haffey loved the look of the Rockbrook residence − it reminded her of a gingerbread house.

But when she and husband Patrick

toured the 5,000-square-foot interior of the Tudor-inspired home it wasn’t as magical. The kitchen was tight and disconnected from the main living area, and the addition left something to be desired. “It was too much for us to take on,” she says. They opted instead for a house in Dundee. Three years later the gingerbread house came back on the market, only this time it had undergone extensive renovations. The addition looked more natural and the main floor had been reconfigured to create a large kitchen off the living and dining rooms.

FOYER Samoyeds Happy and Sherman love to watch out the front door for squirrels and people. “They let me know when they see something good,” Kylie says.

The master bedroom has a fireplace, and the house has a much bigger yard.” That’s important when you have two large Samoyeds that enjoy Nebraska’s winters. An automated doggy door gives them outside access from the laundry room, once the tiny kitchen. Flower lover Kylie is also looking forward to expanding the

already pretty backyard garden beds. Time is at a premium for the young couple. Patrick is an endodontist, a specialist who focuses on root canals. Kylie manages his office. OFFICE The stained glass windows were originally owned by Kylie’s grandparents and have been in the family for years.

GUEST BEDROOM The guest bedroom was painted pink when the couple moved in and they opted to keep it. “I think it’s a pretty color,” Kylie says.

They’ve added wallpaper in the entryway and guest bathroom, brightened the front hallway with green paint and wainscoting and replaced many of the can lights. The chandelier in the dining room was an eBay find. “I just wanted a different style,” Kylie says. Although she downplays her sewing abilities, Kylie designed and made chair covers to dress up the dining room and kitchen. The kitchen chairs were a Craigslist find that she transformed with black paint. She brought drapes from her Dundee home and plans to purchase fabric for more. Chintz and floral prints are favorites, some of which she finds by the yard on eBay. “I just like fabric,” she says. “Mostly I love window treatments. Eventually, I’ll get to all of the windows in this house.” Couch and chair coverings are a must, too, with fur babies Happy and Sherman as well as Himalayan cat MooMoo making themselves at home on the furniture. Their animals are really sweet, Kylie says, but can be labor intensive. “They shed a lot, but they are worth it.”

She and husband Lance Gunderson

have two dogs and two cats. But they are not fans of kitties in the kitchen where they prepare food. “When I built this house, I had my cabinet maker and contractor put in a kitty ramp that bypassed the kitchen,” she says. “It takes them right to the basement for their litter box and cat food.” The ramp starts in the back hallway of their 1920s farmhouse in northwest Omaha. If the couple have guests who are not cat friendly, she simply shoos the felines downstairs and closes the sliding barn door in front of the ramp opening. “Voila, they are contained,” she says. It also provides a quick escape from Buddy, their biggest dog. Kelly Gunderson, Lance’s brother, was the contractor on their house renovation, and the three of them brainstormed the ramp design. It’s constructed of 1-by6-inch wood beams with side rails. Lance said they were worried at first about how the cats would respond. “We kind of put them right up in the hole,” he says. “They used it perfectly fine, and they have been doing so for five years now.” inspiredlivingomaha.com

Protecting their turf

The Gretna family of six boards Loki, Fiona, Sadie and Milo at Katie’s Kennel, which also has turf, so it wasn’t a big adjustment for the dogs. Jodi found a turf product at Costco, and the couple installed 1,800 square feet of it themselves. They had to remove some sod around the house, grade and then add a base layer of limestone. Two sprinkler heads were retained to help wash down the

t was hard to keep grass growing and paws clean with four dogs, so Michael and Jodi Aaronson added artificial turf to

two areas of their yard. Mike and Jackie Roach, founders of Taysia Blue Husky and Malamute Rescue, told them it was the best thing they ever did and now the Aaronsons agree. “Friends want to come see it and wish they had it,” Jodi says. “It’s made life so much easier.”

turf and cool it off in the summer. Cleanup is no different than grass. Now, when it snows or rains there are no worries about letting out their dogs or others they foster. But if trapped inside by the weather, the Aaronsons have lots of doggy brain games. A favorite is a licking mat laced with peanut butter, processed cheese slices or yogurt. “We use that when we brush the dogs or do nail trimming,” Jodi says. “It keeps them occupied.”

The bossy bunny will let them know if they are in her spot

on the couch. “She will do the little nudge thing. ‘Back off and get out of my space,’” Garige says. “She will let you know.” The family of three doesn’t need both living rooms in the tri-level house near 161st Street and Giles Road, so one of them has been taken over by the lionhead bunny. That’s where her playpen sits and her things fill the closet. When the family is home, Zoey runs free in the house. She can be found under couches and beds and prefers rugs and tile over carpeting. For her safety, the basement is off limits. That’s where her hay is stored, and an excited Zoey knows that when Garige goes down there, a meal is soon to follow. Zoey is the family’s third rabbit after the deaths of Daisy

and Jasper. Garige wasn’t sure if they were going to keep Zoey but she settled in quickly and happily. “They are part of the family,” she says. Zoey is feted all day on her August birthday (fresh fruit is a special treat). Planning starts a week ahead of time. Garige also decorates for Zoey’s big day, but that doesn’t last long. The moment it goes up, she takes it down, Garige says. “They love chewing the stuff.” inspiredlivingomaha.com

orget the food, drinks and fellow guests. An automatic doggy door is the hit of every party I throw at the Ducey home.

People of all ages love to stand in the kitchen and watch the pet door go up

and down. It’s almost like magic. The door is activated by a small sensor attached to the collars of house dogs Phoebe and Gigi. The activation distance and the door’s opening time can be adjusted as your pet becomes used to the door. A fenced backyard means no worries about them going in and out on their own. I used to have neighbor kids let the dogs out when I worked long shifts. But I would often forget to call them until the last minute, and it became a big headache. After doing some research, I stumbled upon Solo Pet Doors. The biggest seller for me? No opossums or raccoons can slither through the plastic door, which can be locked at night. Kylie Haffey, whose house is featured in this issue, says she has a love-hate relationship with her automatic door (pictured below). She loves the convenience for her two Samoyeds. “But they have a tendency to sneak out and bark at squirrels in the yard, so I have to keep an eye on them or make sure it’s shut off if we are going to be gone a long time,” she says. My dogs caught on quickly to the door mechanics and so have doggy guests. No more worries about potty breaks while I’m at the office. Now, if only I could find one for the chicken coop.

vinegar is her secret weapon for eliminating bacteria. “That’s like their little room,” she says. “You have to kind of want to clean.” You also have to want to play with your birds, says the secretary and adoption coordinator for the Greater Omaha Cage Bird Society. They’re intelligent beings who crave stimulation and affection. “We sing, we dance, we watch TV and we play all day,” she says. “It’s very exhausting, but when you love it, it’s worth it.” inspiredlivingomaha.com

Jim Cox and Gary George built their

Enid and Eustis weren’t thrilled. “The older cats didn’t understand what playing meant,” Cox says. “They thought they were being terrorized.” The couple, big believers in rescue, did everything they could to acclimate the cats to each other, but nothing worked. PETS AND PLANTS — YES, THEY CAN CO-EXIST Russett Thompson said her kitties would rather tackle crumpled paper than any of her plants, many of which are succulents so they don’t require frequent watering. But if you’ve had a problem between your pets and plants, here are some tips from Scott Evans of the Nebraska Extension in Douglas-Sarpy Counties. Protecting indoor plants from pets » Isolation Putting plants out of reach is probably the easiest and most convenient way to keep them safe from Fido and Fluffy. » Go antiquing Oversized birdcages and wire cloches are two great ways to display and keep plants behind bars, away from furry friends. » Behind glass Small plants such as miniature African violets, heart ferns and even Venus flytraps can easily be kept behind glass in terrariums or 10-gallon fish tanks that your kids aren’t using anymore. » Solitary confinement Empty-nesters can turn an unused bedroom into a plant room and use an old garden gate for a door. » Bad taste A veterinarian can suggest taste deterrents if your furry companions are nibbling on foliage. » Put a fork in it Old kabobs and mismatched forks can be inserted into the potting soil to help train against digging. » Going green Work with your veterinarian to find out if growing cat grass (oats) will help sate the urge to nibble on your greenery. Protecting pets from plants » Selection Not all houseplants make good companions for our four-legged buddies. Check out the plant lists for cats and dogs on aspca.org before you go plant shopping. » Go silk Silk plants are more realistic than they once were. Choosing botanically correct silk plants will fool your friends while preventing unwanted nibbles. » Bell bottoms Narrow containers can be tipped over. Choose wide-bottom pots to help reduce the chances of accidental tipping. » Sunbathing Carve out a spot on your pet’s favorite windowsill just for them. Sharing real estate can prevent turf wars.

MAKE IT YOURSELF

Upcycled toy wears like iron STYLING + PHOTOGRAPHY KILEY CRUSE

T-shirt “yarn” makes a durable dog toy. The material is stretchy enough for a good game of tug of war. But when the yarn is braided, it’s durable enough for even the largest of dogs to sink their teeth into. And since this toy is made from T-shirt material, cleaning is a snap; simply toss it in the washing machine.

32 M A R C H /A P R I L 2 0 2 0

WHAT YOU NEED Scissors Rotary cutter Cutting mat Ruler Cotton T-shirts

1. Wash and dry all shirts. 2. Place a T-shirt on a large cutting mat. Using a rotary cutter, cut across the body of the shirt from armpit to armpit. Also remove the bottom hemmed edge of the T-shirt. (See notes.) You’ll end up with a large rectangle that’s free of any hemming.

5. Once the T-shirt is cut, you’ll be left with one long strip of fabric that’s about 1 inch wide. To turn the fabric into yarn, pull and stretch the fabric. If you’re using a plain cotton T-shirt, the material will stretch to double the original length.

3. Place the T-shirt flat, with the open ends on either side, and the flattened, folded edges at the top and bottom. Starting at the bottom edge of the shirt, use scissors to cut 1-inch-wide strips across the entire rectangle — but without cutting all the way through the top edge. Stop cutting about 1 inch from the folded edge at top. When you are finished, the shirt should be one intact piece with a line of looped fringe. 6. Cut 12 pieces of 60-inch strips of T-shirt yarn and knot the pieces together at the top. Make sure to pull the knot as tight as possible. 7. Separate the yarn into four bunches with three strands each, and braid each three-strand section.

4. To turn the T-shirt into one long strip of fabric, slide your arm into a side opening of the cut T-shirt. Position the uncut portion on your arm. The straight cuts will match up, with a few inches of uncut T-shirt fabric between them. Instead of cutting straight to continue the cuts (which would create individual, separated loops), cut diagonally to connect each cut to the cut above and to the left. This method will give you one long continuous strip of T-shirt material.

8. When each section is braided, hold the knot in one hand and adjust braids to be opposite of one another in perpendicular lines.

9. To create the final braided toy, braid all four of the smaller braids together. We found it helpful to think of each strand as a direction. When the strands are laid out in two perpendicular lines, assign each strand a direction following the north, south, east, west pattern. Place the north braid to the south, making a small loop. Place the south braid to the north, making another small loop. Then weave the east braid over and under to the west and weave the west braid over and under to the east. Tighten the strands and repeat this pattern until the length of your dog toy is complete. When you reach the end, tie all of the strands together to form one big knot like the one at the original end of the toy. Make sure the knots are pulled tight. Trim uneven strands and engage your dog in a game of tug of war.

Notes: We did not have a cutting mat or rotary cutter. You can do all of the cutting necessary with scissors. It will take more length to tie the final knot than you might think. If you braid the toy too far, unbraid far enough for the length you need to tie the final knot. Source: bhg.com. Watch our tutorial on inspiredlivingomaha.com. inspiredlivingomaha.com

SMOOTH SAILING A seasoned cruiser’s take on 3 ships and the right voyage for you

I

STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY HOWARD T. SWAIN JR.

began cruising the high seas in 1985. My greatest fear as I walked the gang plank that first time was seasickness. My second fear — in the era of “The

Love Boat” — was sailing with a ship full of “old people.” After the mandatory safety drill, I returned my life vest to my stateroom and then headed to the deck. I was surprised to see the skyline of Miami disappearing beneath the horizon. I had no idea that we were moving! The ship was so smooth, seasickness was not a problem. And, to my delight, the ship wasn’t overrun with senior travelers. There were plenty of young people, couples and families aboard. Over the past 35 years, I’ve enjoyed more than 20 cruise vacations on eight cruise lines that have taken me to Australia, Russia, Tahiti, South America

Entertainment: The Metropolitan Theatre offers two shows nightly and a different show was presented each night of our cruise. Advance reservations required; live music, karaoke, group activities and games throughout the ship afternoon through late evening; first-run movies under the stars.

CRUISING: FOUR REALMS OF ENJOYMENT “A cruise ship can be a destination in itself or the boutique hotel that takes you from one destination to another,” says Elisa Aust of Custom Cruises & Travel in Omaha. “If you took a cruise and didn’t like it, you probably weren’t on the right ship,” she says. She breaks the cruising experience into four realms:

CONTEMPORARY Royal Caribbean, NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line), Carnival These ships embrace families, multigenerational travel groups and active 30- to 60-year-olds with amusement park or resort-like atmospheres.

PREMIUM Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, Oceania This category doesn’t necessarily indicate a boost in price; it’s just a different atmosphere. “These lines are very much open to families and multigenerational groups but they don’t have above-and-beyond extras.” You will find special attractions, however. Celebrity, for example, has the largest wine cellar at sea. “That doesn’t mean it’s a boozy weekend cruise,” Aust says. Think

wine experience, martini bars and live entertainment. Holland America is known for its original art; Oceania is foodieoriented.

SMALLER LUXURY LINES Seabourn, Silversea, Regent, Crystal Cruises These typically are all-inclusive, five-star experiences. Pricing includes businessclass airfare, gratuities, shore excursions, gourmet food and wine, and other finer amenities.

RIVER CRUISING, YACHTING, EXPEDITION CRUISING “Within river cruising you have step-up categories,” Aust says. “There are just so many options out there. And unless you are including a pricing caveat, they’re not comparable.”

1. Slice two apples into small sections, removing the seeds and core. 2. In a blender, mix the apple slices and yogurt. Add water, if necessary; the consistency should be liquidy. 3. Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. Place in freezer until frozen solid. 4. Serve outdoors — to avoid messes as treats thaw. Source: irresistablepets.net
