elcome to our birthday issue! At my house, we absolutely love coming up with birthday themes, making our own decorations and stuffing treat bags for our guests. It’s always fun to see what themes my three kids – Bobby Jr., soonto-be 10; Alejandra, 5; and Gabriella, 2 – come up with. We’ve held pizza parties, monster mixers, pretty-in-pink tea times and splash bashes. The hardest part is taking down our beautiful birthday decorations after the parties. Sad face. Aging ‘Grace’-Fully? Not exactly, but she’s getting there.
I
will celebrate my 40th birthday this month. I had always envisioned my 40th birthday as an entire summer of celebration with lavish parties, exotic trips and expensive gifts. Instead, I am very pregnant and am about to pop (if I haven’t already)! It seems that the only celebrating I will get to do is when I finally return to wearing pants with real waistbands and zippers. I don’t feel 40. When my mom was 40, she had an 18-year-old AMy GRACE daughter who was graduating from high school. She also had a 15-year-old son who was stealing her car.
How can I be 40? My oldest isn’t even 7 yet – he has just finished kindergarten. I have an infant on the way, and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. In my younger days, I thought 40 was old. It was like a hop, skip and a jump to grandparent-hood. Now I think 40 is the new 20. I still like to buy statement jewelry at Forever 21 – along with those who are less than half my age. I still like to stay up late with my girlfriends while flipping through fashion magazines and overindulging on Milk Duds. However, now I don’t have to sneak my liquor, and Bartles & Jaymes is no longer my drink of choice. But then I remember that there are legitimate mothers (I mean that they are mature enough to actually be mothers) in my preschooler’s music class who don’t even know who the band REM is.
There are individuals who can actually be considered grown-ups who have never seen the movies “Sixteen Candles” or “When Harry Met Sally,” much less have every single word memorized. I thought that by the time I was 40, I wouldn’t have car payments anymore, or that I’d be about 10 to 15 years out from my early retirement. I thought I’d be getting ready to visit colleges and talk majors with my teenagers. But I am nowhere near any of that at 40. My mother-in-law told me once that being an older mother affords us wisdom and perspective. I’m not so sure that I want to know that I could be half done with my life already. Lemonade Base
Ingredients 1 3/4 cups white sugar 8 cups water 1 1/2 cups lemon juice (juice from about 6 lemons) 1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve sugar. 2. Cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled. 3. Remove seeds from lemon juice, but leave pulp. 4. In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups water. Note: You can extract more juice by microwaving the lemon for 5 to 15 seconds before juicing. Makes about 2 liters

Watermelon Lemonade
Blackberry Mint Lemonade
Ingredients 4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed 2 liters lemonade base Seedless watermelon wedge for garnish
Ingredients 2 liters lemonade base Handful of mint leaves 3/4 cup blackberries (save a few for garnish) Mint sprigs for garnish 1. Start with lemonade base, and mix in a handful of slightly torn mint leaves. Refrigerate overnight, then strain lemonade to remove mint leaves. 2. Pulse blackberries with about 1/4 cup of lemonade in a blender until fruit is slightly broken. 3. Add blackberry mixture to rest of lemonade and stir well. 4. Add ice, and garnish with a skewer of blackberries and mint sprigs.
1. Place watermelon cubes in blender and puree until smooth. Strain through a mesh sieve. 2. Add watermelon juice to lemonade and stir gently. 3. Add ice, and garnish with seedless watermelon wedge.

1. Bring peaches, sugar and water to a boil, then simmer until sugar is dissolved (about 10 minutes). 2. Allow mixture to cool, then strain through a mesh sieve. 3. Stir in lemon juice. 4. Add ice, and garnish with peach slices.

Time Is On Your Side Get the most out of summer before it slips away. By Amy Tokos
Chores One of our jobs as parents is to teach our kids how to take care of themselves and their stuff. Do your kids know how to take care of the house? Can they clean and maintain their stuff?
Electronics Put these away. Kids are so much more creative and active when they don’t have an electronic device in their hand. Have a family meeting and negotiate times when phones/ TV are allowed.
If not, teach them. They have time to do their own laundry, including washing, folding and putting it away. They have time to clean the bathroom (which will also encourage them to be neater). They have time to dust, vacuum, clean the windows, do the dishes and weed the garden.
Our family has two teenage girls in it, and this even works for them. Give it a try.
Make a chore jar, and let the kids draw one chore per day. You can make a chore chart with the daily and weekly tasks to check off. Or you can be a bit more casual and just leave the kids a list each day. Our kids love to go to the pool in the afternoon, for example, but they must have their chores done first.
Cooking Summer is a great time to involve your children in meal planning and cooking. Teach them how to plan, shop and cook. Younger kids can be helpers in the process. Kids over age 10 can take the lead, and you can be the helper. This is a chance for you to guide your child, but also to step aside. Let your child learn from his or her choices and mistakes. Show your kids that you have confidence in their abilities. This is a great selfesteem boost.
make a summer bucket list What do you want to get done before the kids go back to school? What do the kids want to do? A summer bucket list can be a guide for your days. It can include tasks that need to be done, but it should also include fun stuff. Right now, my kids are in the process of tackling their summer bucket list. They created the list in May, and it includes more than 100 items. They want to bake cookies, have a lemonade stand, go to the zoo, learn how to make sushi, read, go to the pool all day and eat something they’ve never tried. But that’s the normal stuff. They also have some silly things on the list, like learn all the lines from one character in a movie, go bowling for four hours and eat a whole watermelon. Call a family meeting and create your list. There is still time. If you are headed out on vacation, what do the kids want to do and see while you are there? If you are home, how do you want to spend your days? Write it all down, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

n WHAT YOU NEED 1 yard each of 4 colorful fabrics that play well together 4 yards iron-on interfacing, light- to medium-weight 40 yards (4 packs) of single-fold bias tape in a coordinating color

othing says “We want to celebrate you!” or “Party going on!” like a string of colorful triangles dancing overhead. We made pendant banners out of fabric for our daughter’s wedding reception last summer, and then we recycled them for a high school graduation party this spring. Throughout the year, I hang them in the kitchen whenever we celebrate a family member’s birthday. The banners, which wipe clean and store flat, still have a lot of partying ahead.
note: Four yards of fabric will yield about 144 pendants and about 10 yards of finished banner. We left our banners in 4-yard sections (dictated by the length of a single pack of bias tape) so we can tie them together as needed.
WHAT YOU DO 1. Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of each 1-yard section of fabric. 2. Using a template, trace a pendant shape onto interfacing side of fabric; cut out pendants. A single yard of fabric should yield 36 pendants. (Downloadable template at momaha.com.) 3. Assemble your pendant by catching the top edge of each triangle inside the folded bias tape. Allow at least 2 inches between pendants. 4. Hang pendants and let the party begin!

hirty cans. That’s how much paint I recently dropped off at Under the Sink in Millard. The paint had been sitting in my garage for almost seven years because I didn’t know – or take the time to find out – what to do with it. Most of the cans contained latex paint, which makes up two-thirds of the residential waste taken to the City of Omaha Public Works Department facility each year, Supervisor Wayne Beal told me recently. Some of the paint is made available to Douglas and Sarpy County residents for no charge at the facility’s swap shop. “It allows people to use items for their intended purpose,” Beal said about the shop, which also stocks varnish, household cleaners, garden products and more.

Mine was among 14,000 vehicles dropping off one million pounds of waste at Under the Sink in the past year. Since its opening in 2005, it has accepted – for no charge – hazardous waste ranging from polish remover to weed killer and motor oil. Motor oil is reused to heat the building, for example, while antifreeze is used for the city’s fleet of vehicles. “We are keeping it out of our sewer systems and groundwater and drinking water supplies,” Beal said. What isn’t accepted? Business waste, tires, appliances, electronics – or ash from Mount St. Helen’s. The ash was one of the more unusual items brought in, Beal said, adding that the words “caution,” “danger,” “poison” and “corrosive” are what to look for on a can’s label.

It was easy for Dorothy O’Leary to forget about her broken hard drive, monitor and printer in her basement, but when her TV stopped working, she had to take action. After calling Midwest Electronic Recycling, she learned that she could dispose of those items – and a whole lot more – “in the most environmentally responsible way that I could find,” she said. The business charges customers by pounds or inches depending on the item, and then strips it down to its “guts,” said President Kathryn Haffke. The components are then sent to vendors for further processing in the United States. “Our business will try to reuse as much as possible before recycling or upcycling any material,” Haffke said. Midwest Electronic Recycling charges a nominal fee for Cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors, TVs and printers, while other
electronics are recycled for free. Even with a trunk-load of items, including an old cordless phone, a broken fan and two TV remote controls, O’Leary’s bill was $26. And that included a $1 charge to crush her hard drive.

Dear Broke Momma, I feel ya. Remember that obnoxious MTV show, “My Super Sweet 16,” about the insanely expensive parties for teenagers? Well, it seems like elementary school birthday parties can have their own reality show these days. We went to a party last year for my daughter for which a petting zoo was brought into the backyard. A petting zoo! Why anyone would want to pay to have animals pooping and peeing in their backyard is beyond me. What happened to the days of splurging for a piñata and praying that the kids didn’t give a
guest a concussion while swinging the bat? With that said, you are right. It’s tough to be the one who has to say no. However, there are ways to do it so the child still has an amazing birthday. My brother came up with the idea of alternating birthday celebrations. One year it is just family and two to three friends to celebrate. The following year, the child can have a bigger celebration with eight to 10 friends. He started this when his kids were young. Now even as teenagers, it has become their routine and is never questioned. Not to sound cliché, but size really doesn’t matter. Yes, I’m still talking about birthdays. It’s about what you do with the day. I like to make birthdays exciting by surprising my child with little presents all day long. When my daughter turned 4, for example, I cooked a special breakfast and had a little present waiting for her at the table. When I picked her up from preschool, there was another little present surprising her in her booster seat. When she went potty, there was another one in the towel basket. You get the idea. And by “little present,” I really mean little – think
from a dollar store or the $1 aisle at Target. It’s the element of surprise that she adored, not the gift itself. The key is to start birthday traditions that are fun and meaningful. She’ll remember those. As for those big-deal birthday parties: The great thing is that you still get to go without having to throw one yourself. So enjoy petting that smelly goat, and know that as long as you put some effort and creativity into your kid’s birthday, she will love it. And if she doesn’t, well heck, maybe see if you can borrow the neighbor’s dog to poop in your yard while the kids pet it. It doesn’t seem that different from an expensive petting zoo, if you ask me.
