ONE OF A KIND They wanted to give their venue a speakeasy vibe, something that no one had ever seen before. “Something jaw-dropping, literally … our jaws dropped! We love uniqueness and details, and we worked with an amazing designer and vendor team to bring our visions to life.” It was a big party, and the dance floor was packed from start to finish. Some of their favorites were a 7-foot love sign, a large head table overhang and a floor-to-ceiling greenery wall with Edison bulb lighting. She spent a lot of money on flowers, too, but she said they were totally worth it. So was the open bar. “We all had a blast.” FAMILY FAVORITES Nate’s grandmother died just before the wedding, so it was special to open the card she had made and read her handwritten note. Chicken dance > ‘Baby Shark’ STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY KELSEY STEWART
I
’ve been going to weddings since I was a little kid. I was so little that I still had some blonde in my hair and sported bangs. And my dance moves resembled those of Elaine from “Seinfeld.” But nothing felt cooler than getting to go to your older cousins’ weddings. Being the youngest of many, many cousins means I’ve

been to a lot. I’ve “helped” to catch the bouquet at one wedding. I’ve danced up a storm at others. I’ve been dragged into many conga lines to the tune of “We Are Family.” I remember when my cousin Nichole played “Be Our Guest” to kick off the buffet line at her reception. And when my cousin Jenny tossed candy onto the dance floor for kids to scoop up at her October wedding.
WE Bride Blogger Kelsey Stewart and her fiancé, David, are planning an August 2020 wedding. Read more of her posts on weddingessentialsmagazine.com
Sure, kids don’t always make the final guest list for some couples. But with families making up 80% of our guest list, David and I can’t imagine not having the little guys and gals there to celebrate. We’ve already locked down our flower girl and ring bearer — Jillian and Tanner, twins who will be freshly 3 years old by the wedding date. One of them — my money’s on Jill — will drag the other down the aisle. Three more of my cousins’ kids — Sydney, Olivia and Milly — will bring up the gifts during Mass. And heck, maybe they’ll man the instant photo guest book station, too. To make sure our young guests are entertained before the reception kicks off, we’ve got a special party favor. They can grab a wedding-themed coloring book and box of crayons from the guest book table. After that, they can do what kids tend to do at weddings: barely pick at their dinners, eat cake, stay up past bedtime and steal the show on the dance floor. But, sorry kids, one thing won’t, uh, swim at the reception. There will be no “Baby Shark” blaring across the dance floor. You may, however, chicken dance your little wings off.

YOU Sweet feel-good wedding moments
STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY HEIDI HOFFMAN
T
he sweetest, most special wedding moments are those that are 100% you. Here are some ideas, from Real Wedding couples.
1. PICK A TIME OF DAY THAT’S IDEAL FOR YOU Cierra and Scott exchanged vows on the beach at 10 a.m. so they could have a brunch reception with mimosas and a create-your-own omelet station. A short and sweet ceremony with a few of their nearest and dearest meant they could swap their formal attire for beachwear after brunch and play sand volleyball until it was time for their casual barhopping celebration that evening. weddingessentialsmagazine.com

2. CONSIDER A BILINGUAL OFFICIANT WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR Most of Eli’s family is Spanish-speaking so her aunt’s role in the ceremony was to translate as Ben’s brother led the ceremony in English. The couple’s personally written vows were interpreted in Spanish with a little humor thrown in.
22
SPRING 2020
3. DO FIRST DANCES DIFFERENTLY Louis and his mom didn’t slow-dance; they jammed out as if they were at home in the kitchen. Another couple, Eli and Ben, had their first dance and then halfway through the song, they did their mother-son and father-daughter dance at the same time.

4. FOR AN INTIMATE WEDDING, PASS THE RINGS This was part of Eli and Ben’s wedding. As the officiants shared the symbolism and meaning of the wedding rings, they were passed through the hands of each guest. They had less than 50 people, so it didn’t take too much time, and everyone truly felt like they were part of the ceremony.
5. VOTE FOR THE SHOE GAME Kailey and Ian played the “wedding shoe game” at their reception — and went 20/20, agreeing on all the questions asked about them as a couple. The Q&A was a riot for both the newlyweds and their guests.

6. ALLOW FAMILY TO SHARE TRADITIONS For Olga and Ryan’s wedding, the bride’s aunt baked a Korovai, a round, braided Ukrainian wedding bread. It brought the couple (and guests) to tears to have it served during dinner. But Olga’s aunt didn’t stop there. She surprised the couple again just before their first dance with 12 traditional Ukrainian dancers who put on a jaw-dropping 20-minute show. It was a memory the couple and guests will be talking about for years to come.

7. PLAY WITH YOUR CAKE A cake smash isn’t as bad as you might think. Touch-ups are minimal as long as you avoid the eyes. At Hillary and Justin’s wedding, the groom’s favorite pastime — disc golf — inspired a groom’s cake with an interactive feature. Justin and a few guests took a couple of shots, and Justin made a goal. He celebrated by smashing cake into his own face.

Grooms want to do their part, so why not plan the honeymoon? STORY MARJIE DUCEY

atthew Hjersman Everson handled all the details of his Seattle honeymoon with wife Johnna.

Taylor Jurgens and Kelbey Heider handled
the honeymoon planning for their weddings too. Taylor and wife Bailey went to an eco resort in St. Lucia, while Kelbey and Nicole traveled to Costa Rica. Both are in the Caribbean. Marriage is a partnership, Hjersman Everson says, so it was natural for him to handle a share of the planning for their big day and the trip afterward. “It’s nice to tag team,” he says. “We could rely on each other’s strengths.” That’s how Jurgens felt, too. He likes looking activities to do, so lining up their trip to St. Lucia was a no-brainer. “I knew she was doing a lot of planning,” he says. “I thought that would be a good job for me — to take care of the honeymoon.” Jurgens, who is in the civil engineering field,

He says Bailey really enjoyed the trip, and they’ve talked several times about returning. Kelbey is an attorney and Nicole, a pharmacist, so it was important for Kelbey
to find a honeymoon destination that was affordable and easy to get to and fit their busy schedules. They were married in September in Portland, Oregon, where Nicole is from, and planned their wedding together long-distance. CO N TI N U ED O N PA G E 33 weddingessentialsmagazine.com

“We booked the reception venue and church sight unseen off the Internet,” Kelbey says. “It was gorgeous. It was perfect.” Finding that perfect spot for their honeymoon was their biggest headache, Kelbey says. Costa Rica offered a mix of relaxation and adventure. Plus, it was only eight hours away. “After I got the ball rolling and had contacted some people who were local, it made it a lot easier,” he says of their February getaway. His travel agent helped put the trip together, so they didn’t have to worry about getting to and from the airport, a huge relief. They explored the Arenal volcano in Costa Rica, and saw all sorts of wildlife like birds, snakes and sloths. “It was just a really cool area to visit,” Kelbey says. “It was an awesome trip.” Matthew and Johnna’s adventure started even before they got to Seattle, where they stayed at an Airbnb on Bainbridge Island. After flying to Chicago, they took the train west and enjoyed sights such as Glacier National Park along the way. Their only regret about the three-day trip by train? Not getting a sleeping car and being forced to try to sleep on what Matthew says was no better than a first-class airline seat. “We should have splurged on that,”
Matthew says. Still, they say, it was an awesome trip and a wonderful honeymoon. And Matthew felt as though he had done his share of the wedding planning.
As a former DJ, it was natural for him to book someone for their reception. He also helped with the venue and food. “I got the big pieces in place and Johnna did the rest,” he says. weddingessentialsmagazine.com

HONEYMOON
Over the moon in Cancun ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT IS PARADISE FROM SUNUP TO SUNDOWN
34
SPRING 2020
F
STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE WATKINS ull disclosure: I was not on my honeymoon when I enjoyed seven glorious, sunny, tropical days at Moon Palace Cancun in February. I was there with friends to celebrate a birthday. But I’d return in a heartbeat for a destination wedding or a honeymoon. It’s a gorgeous, affordable locale that makes for a fantastic quick
getaway or a longer, more luxurious stay. The all-inclusive property boasts two resorts in one (Nizuc and
Sunrise), a luxurious spa and a challenging golf course. Upon arrival, your every need is taken care of, starting with curbside luggage pickup and quick check-in service. A few tips for a worry-free, highly enjoyable time at this tropical paradise: 1. Arrive at the airport early to allow time for security since this is an international flight. Always keep your passport handy because you will need to show it often. 2. Use the in-room safe for your personal belongings, especially your cash (you won’t need much on the property except for tipping) and passports. 3. Take advantage of the freebies at the resort, and spend your
resort cash because it’s no good to you at home. 4. The resort offers 24-hour room service; just be sure to allow a couple of hours for prep and delivery. 5. Bring cash and-or a credit card on your excursions for souvenirs and other island purchases. 6. Above all, take full advantage of the resort’s amenities, so you leave relaxed and refreshed. GETTING THERE We flew Southwest from Omaha with one connection each way, but Cancun is an international airport, so you can fly pretty much any airline. Transportation to and from the airport is available, but be sure to arrange it in advance of your travel day. Once you’re on the property, pretty much everything is within walking distance — though some distances are a mile or more. There’s a free shuttle between the resort and the golf course, and transportation is included with most excursions and other activities. ACCOMMODATIONS To say that Moon Palace Cancun is spread out is an understatement. Each building is identified with a fruit or vegetable symbol, and depending on where you stay, the walk to and from the main building (restaurants, spa and souvenir shops) can take a while. Let’s ask the Wedding Expert Blaine Muhle, Owner of The Fountains Ballroom
Spring is here and is a perfect time to get married! What should I consider for a Spring Wedding? What features should I look for in a venue for a spring Wedding? Spring is a beautiful time of year - with unpredictable Midwest weather. It’s wise to choose a venue with an indoor space as a backup, in case “Spring Showers” interrupt your outdoor ceremony plans. The Fountains Ballroom has just freshly painted and stained the double grand staircase and redone the drapery on the accent windows adjacent to it. Now you have two options for a fresh and perfect wedding, whether you’re married outdoors under the pergola or inside in the ballroom.
What are the advantages to choosing an all-in-one venue for my ceremony and reception? Everyone’s been to that wedding where you had to wait 2-3 hours for the reception to begin at another location. One great location for both saves time and money. Plus, it’s a convenient and comfortable experience for you and your loved ones. Bonus: It allows you to enjoy more time at your reception. At The Fountains Ballroom, we have lovely outdoor ceremony space. However, we can easily accommodate an indoor ceremony any time
of year. Start YOUR special day at 10 a.m. in our newly renovated wedding suites. With our in-house day-of coordinator, everything will flow smoothly from getting your party ready, to the ceremony and on to starting your reception celebration. Cue the DJ and open the bar – it’s all seamlessly there for you. Simply relax and enjoy it all!
What should we do if we just got engaged this spring and want to get married soon? Years ago, it was common to have an engagement that was longer than a year, giving couples plenty of time to prepare. But that is no longer true! We live in a digital, fast-paced world where planning can be done in a blink of an eye or a keystroke. Many venues have dates to fill even this spring. Be open-minded when it comes to choosing a date or day. The benefit could be a discounted rate. The most important factor to remember is, that you are going to be married! The Fountains Ballroom is now booking for 2021 and beyond, but that doesn’t mean 2020 is out of the picture. We have a few dates left (including a couple of Saturdays) and would love to make your day happen in 2020. Currently, all dates are $1,500 off! Contact us today for more information on our all-inclusive packages.

They were asked to retrieve his mom’s cellphone at a gazebo there. “I saw the rose petals and my heart skipped a beat,” Tessa says. John had inherited the wedding and engagement rings of his great-aunt Ruth, which he melted down and then crafted into a ring for Tessa. When they eventually arrived at the cabin, the extended family was there for a surprise engagement party. “It was everything I could have dreamt for my proposal, and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.” SOMETHING FOR MOM John went on to cast his wedding band and a necklace for his mother, using the gold and center stone from Ruth’s rings, which he gave to her on their wedding day. John documented the process of making the rings
seem a little rushed before the ceremony,” Tessa says. She’s a Type A and fretted about every detail, but in the beauty of the day she was able to let things slide. TOUCHING MOMENT As the wedding party lined up, Tessa’s dad looked at her and said, “OK, girls, it’s time to go.” His voice cracked and he choked back tears, which set off a chain reaction. “I rarely see my dad cry, so it caught me off guard and was a sweet moment I will remember forever,” Tessa says. READY TO EAT Their favorite gift was a raclette table-top grill, which they’ve used to entertain family and friends. Tessa gave John a watch and tickets to a Chicago Cubs-Washington Nationals game. Their families are fans. John gave Tessa an original watercolor painting of their new home. Each guest went home with a jar of honey

Arm young children with glow sticks instead of sparklers. They’re safe and will provide hours of entertainment as necklaces, bracelets, crowns and magic wands.
TIPS FOR COUPLES » Resist the urge to run; stroll down the line, and soak up these last moments of your wedding day — completely uninhibited by stress! » Pause a couple of times through the procession. Perhaps at the top of the path and at the end of the line, so that your photographer can get photos of that glowing finish to a picture-perfect day.
» Make safety a priority. Sparklers have incredibly high temperatures. Be wary of guests getting a little too animated or a little too close to each other and you for comfort. You don’t want to end the night with a burnt dress or suit and a third-degree burn. Designate a guest or family member to keep an eye out for you. weddingessentialsmagazine.com

REAL WEDDING
Margaret & Henry W E D D I N G S B Y A M Y LY N N
SEPTEMBER 28, 2019
GO BLUEJAYS Margaret Jow and Henry Mishek met during their undergraduate studies at Creighton University. Four years later, while visiting Margaret’s family in Fort Worth, Texas, Henry proposed after dinner downtown. “Little did I know that my best friends were at my parents’ house waiting to celebrate with us with cake and champagne,” Margaret says. PERSONALITY PLUS First they had to find a date that would fit Henry’s medical school schedule. They wanted an intimate, modern celebration with touches of their personality sprinkled throughout: cultural traditions during the ceremony, live jazz during happy hour, their favorite local beer (Infusion’s Vanilla Bean Blonde) hoisted during the reception. RIGHT START The ceremony was the biggest moment of the day and they liked having it early in the day. Food and music were the biggest priorities for the reception. “We believe that if we have our loved ones, and the music is right and the food is great, that’s what makes the party,” they say. Their parents helped pay for the food, alcohol and venue, and they took on the rest for their 320 guests. FIRST DANCE In college, Henry and Margaret would always meet friends at the Crescent Moon bar in the Blackstone District. “Fortunately, they were having Oktoberfest the afternoon of our wedding, so we were able to take our friends on a party bus and go to Oktoberfest before the reception! A polka band was playing ... and that’s

actually where we shared our first dance that day,” Margaret says. DRINKING IN THE RAIN It was gorgeous outside the entire day, Margaret says, then it began to pour just as the cocktail hour began. “All we could do was laugh and realize that you can never fully plan your entire day out.” SPECIAL MOMENTS They loved having live music during the cocktail hour and dinner, and so did their guests. But their sweetest moment came while taking pictures with their dog, Franklin, after the ceremony. Their favorite gift was a Dyson pet vacuum for Franklin, who sheds a lot. WEEKEND TRADITION Henry wrote Margaret a song, which he plays every weekend morning while she’s drinking her coffee. He, meanwhile, is a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan. They go to a lot of home games, so Margaret gave Henry a set of personalized Chiefs cornhole boards made in Tennessee. GENEROUS LADY Henry says Margaret pours out her time, talents and decisions to everyone she meets and that’s why he loves her. She says Henry is the kindest and most patient person you’ll ever meet. “He makes every person feel so special and is such a loyal friend to everyone,” she says. BUSY SCHEDULE With Henry about to become a fourth-year medical student, finding time for each other can be crazy. “We take every opportunity we can to have spontaneous date nights, watch TV together, or even take Franklin on a walk together.” Monday’s routine: “We watch ‘The Bachelor’ together.”
