Tom O’Bryan:

The Autoimmune Fix

Miriam Knight: I’m Miriam Knight, and I’m very pleased to welcome today, Dr. Tom O’Bryan. Dr. O’Bryan is a world expert on gluten and its impact on your health. Omtimes.com

He’s an internationally recognized and soughtafter speaker and workshop leader, specializing in the complications of non-celiac gluten sensitivity, celiac disease and the development of autoimmune diseases as they occur inside and outside of the intestines. He holds teaching faculty positions with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the National University of Health Sciences. He is the founder of www.thedr.com. That’s T-H-E-D-R .com, and he’s the visionary behind Betrayal, a docuseries about autoimmune disease. Today we’re going to discuss his critically acclaimed groundbreaking book called The Autoimmune Fix. It outlines the step by step development of degenerative diseases and gives us the tools to identify our personal disease processes years before the symptoms are obvious and hopefully in time to reverse them. I am so pleased to have him on the show. Welcome, Tom.

Tom O’Bryan: Thank you, it’s a pleasure to be with you. Miriam Knight: I have read many books about autoimmunity and digestion and paleo and what you should do for your gut, and I was so pleased to read your book because it seemed to explain many of the concepts that had been only fuzzily explained before, and it kind of pulls everything together for me. Tom O’Bryan: Well, thank you. That’s a compliment. Miriam Knight: Let’s jump in because gluten sensitivity is something that has really risen on the radar of so many people. I suspect that most people are like me, and they have only a very fuzzy notion of what gluten sensitivity is and what it does to your system. What do the people who have this gluten sensitivity experience in their bodies? How is it affecting them? Tom O’Bryan: Well, if you pull a chain, the chain always breaks at the weakest link. It could be at one end, the middle, the other end, it’s your heart, your brain, your liver, your kidneys, Omtimes.com

wherever your weak genetic link is. You pull on the chain, that’s where the link’s going to break. So, when you have a sensitivity to food that’s causing inflammation in your body, it’s pulling on the chain. So, it just depends on the individual as to where it’s going to manifest. There are over 20,000 studies now in the medical literature on the dangers of wheat and the symptoms that might come from it. For example, our gallbladders store bile that’s made by the liver, and when we eat fat, bile gets squeezed out of the gallbladder down into the intestines to break down the fat, kind of like soapy water. When you have a sensitivity to wheat, you secrete less than 20 percent of the amount of bile that you should for fat that you’re eating. So, someone that does not have a sensitivity to wheat, they’ll secrete, let’s say 10 milligrams of bile when they eat an avocado. Someone that does have a sensitivity to wheat, they’ll secrete two milligrams for the same amount of fat in an avocado. So, that means you don’t digest your fats well, and your gallbladder begins not Omtimes.com

functioning well, and you can develop gallbladder disease, and it can be as the result of wheat sensitivity. Or, it could be your brain, or it could be your heart. That’s why Mayo Clinic publishes studies on reversing a very serious disease called cardiomyopathy when you go on a wheat-free diet. And that doesn’t happen for everyone, but if they have the sensitivity to wheat and they have cardiomyopathy, when you put them on a wheat-free diet, the cardiomyopathy gets better. Miriam Knight: This actually hits quite close to home because my husband had gallbladder disease, and he ended up having the gallbladder removed as an emergency procedure, which is no fun. And now, he has all kinds of digestive problems... Tom O’Bryan: Of course, because now, the ability to digest fats, one of the key mechanisms in our body to digest fats has been removed. They’ve taken it out. You don’t want to have complications from the surgery. But, they’re surgeons. They’re not functional medicine doctors. And so, they

don’t say, okay, now you’re not gonna be secreting any bile anymore when you eat fats, so you better take the digestive enzymes to break down fats. Thousands of gallbladder surgeries are done every year. I don’t know the exact number, but it’s in the tens of thousands. None of these people were told they now have a vulnerability for the rest of their lives of having fat deficiencies, meaning the fatsoluble vitamins like A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K. And they’re not told that they must compensate because a part that is supposed to be dealing with that in every meal has been taken out. Miriam Knight: You mentioned functional medicine, and I think that that is a revolution in the approach to medicine that we sorely need. Can you explain what that is for our listeners? Tom O’Bryan: Yes, of course. When you get symptoms--no one gets Alzheimer’s in their 60s or 70s. You get Alzheimer’s in your 20s and 30s, and it just takes decades of killing off brain cells until there’s so much damage

it becomes obvious. And the damage accumulates in speed. You lose more and lose more and lose more and lose more. But, it starts decades before there’s ever a symptom. So, by the time you get symptoms, whatever the disease should be, you’re falling over a waterfall. You’re just going down. Functional medicine it’s called upstream. Let’s go back up the river away or go back up the stream before you fall over the waterfall, and let’s see what the things that are causing the problems that eventually will manifest as whatever the weak link in your chain is like Alzheimer’s or heart disease or gallbladder dysfunction are. What’s going on upstream? In Functional medicine, we teach doctors of all disciplines, mostly medical doctors but also chiropractors and acupuncturists and natural parts and osteopaths, we teach them how to look upstream, how to ask the right questions of the patient, what’s their health history been so that we get a big picture overview. When you get Omtimes.com

migraines, you don’t treat the head. You have to treat what’s causing the migraines. And of course, you want symptom relief, and so you’ll do medications to feel better, but you have to look at why is this happening, what’s going on upstream. And unfortunately, in our medical education, we’re not taught this. We’re not taught to think this way. What we’re taught is how to reduce the symptoms, how to calm down the symptoms. And that’s very important to do. Can’t say enough about how important it is so people can feel better and function in their lives. But, we have to go upstream, and that’s what functional medicine is. Miriam Knight: At the beginning of your book, you talk about how you were turned on to the notion of functional medicine when you were superduper fit and healthy, and yet you were having problems. Is it a genetically related trait that gives you your particular weak link? Tom O’Bryan: The weak links are contributed to by two main factors. One is your Omtimes.com

genetics, and the other is your antecedents. Antecedents are the things that have happened to you and have accumulated in your life. For example, if you love tuna and you eat tuna two to three times a week, you’re gonna have high levels of mercury in your body because practically all the tuna, all the tuna in the world is high in mercury. So, that’s called an antecedent. Tuna is good for you, but you get high mercury levels, and if mercury accumulates in your brain, you’re gonna have brain dysfunction problems, and you’ll never know where it came from unless you’re looking upstream to see. So, genetics, you can’t do anything about the genes. That’s the deck of cards you were dealt in life. But, you don’t have to turn those genes on. Genes just mean that’s a little bit of a weak link, don’t pull on that chain too much. Most diseases that are genetic in nature need something to turn the gene on, and that’s the environment that we’re exposed to. That’s the critical picture here is this toxic world that we live in. I want to give you an

example that was just published six weeks ago by the World Wildlife Fund in conjunction with two major universities. They published a paper that showed there has been on average a 57 percent reduction of all wildlife on the planet since 1970. I read that article in the newspaper, little summary, and I said, oh, that’s too bad, and then I went on to read something else. Just this morning in the paper, I saw that cheetahs are going extinct. So, it’s the toxic world we live in. Miriam Knight: Tom, another statistic that people should take notice of is that, for the first time, life expectancy for the new generation is less than the parents’ generation. What is so astonishing is how both delicate the balance of nature is and yet how resilient if given a chance. Can you go into some of the effects of the toxins, the toxic load, I think something that you call the body burden is and how we can recognize it and deal with it? Tom O’Bryan: Yes, It’s a critical concept. The New England Journal of Medicine that

published the paper - for the first time in the history of the human species ever, children are gonna get sick at earlier ages than their parents, get diagnosed with diseases at earlier ages than their parents and die at an earlier age than when their parents died. These are chemicals that are not supposed to be in their bodies at all. And then we wonder why there are a million children a year now in the US diagnosed with autism. Because the brain is so sensitive, just so very sensitive, and these toxic exposures that are in the bloodstream 25 % of all the blood in the body are in the brain at any one time, and the brain cells are damaged by this. We have to wake up to this because we’re killing the planet. We really must have a paradigm shift in how we think about this whole world that we live and how we take care of this world. As a doctor, when you read the science and you see what’s happening to our bodies and you wonder why your brother developed cancer at 28, or your father died at 54, or your mother has Alzheimer’s in her Omtimes.com

60s, I mean, what’s going on here? It’s that our bodies are becoming so toxic, so full of these toxic chemicals. Miriam Knight: Let’s get back to the question of wheat and gluten because that really is a core specialty of yours, and it’s something that there’s a lot of misunderstanding about. What does gluten do in our bodies, and particularly the shift in the development of wheat strains and so on? Don’t even want to go there. Tom O’Bryan: The word gluten is that we think about when we say gluten sensitivity, but it’s really not gluten. It’s wheat. Gluten is not bad for you. Bad gluten is bad for you because there’s gluten in rice, and there’s gluten in corn, there’s gluten in quinoa. But, it’s the family of gluten proteins in wheat, rye, and barley that is the problem. But, we associate the word gluten as being a problem. It’s just wrong language, but that’s what we’ve got to work with now. So, it’s really wheat that’s the problem, and there are many proteins in wheat, not just Omtimes.com

gluten. There are many, but gluten is a primary one. Dr. Hollon, at Harvard and his team that published the paper on this about a year and a half ago, and they showed that every human, all humans when they eat wheat, every time they eat wheat, they develop something called intestinal permeability. The slang term for it is the leaky gut. Now, the fastest growing cells in the body are the inside lining of the intestines. Every three to seven days, you have a whole new lining to your intestines. So, if you think of the lining of the intestines like cheesecloth, when you eat wheat, you tear the cheesecloth, but it heals. You have a toast for breakfast. You tear the cheesecloth. It heals. You have a sandwich for lunch. You tear the cheesecloth. It heals. Pasta for dinner, you tear the cheesecloth. It heals. Day after day after week after month after year after year until one day you have waffles for breakfast, you tear the cheesecloth, it doesn’t heal. Now you get that intestinal permeability that doesn’t go away, and that is the gateway

in the development of the autoimmune diseases from multiple sclerosis to rheumatoid arthritis to Alzheimer’s to Parkinson’s, it’s the intestinal permeability that is the setup for these diseases to begin and to progress.

body produces act like scissors to cut that pearl necklace into smaller clumps of pearls and then smaller clumps and smaller clumps and smaller clumps until you’re cutting the pearl necklace into each individual pearl. Those are called amino acids.

So, wheat is a mild toxin. It’s a mild toxin. But, because of the extreme amount of toxins we’re exposed to every day, we lose our threshold, and even the mild toxins become an irritant. Now you have a problem, and it doesn’t go away. And that’s the gateway into the development of Hashimoto’s disease or Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, any of the autoimmune diseases.

The amino acids can go right through the cheesecloth into the bloodstream, and then your body uses those amino acids to make new bone cells and brain cells and kidney cells and whatever you need. But, it’s those single amino acids that make the difference. But, what happens when you get tears in the cheesecloth is that clumps of the pearl necklace can get through the tears. They’re called macromolecules, big molecules. Those get into the bloodstream, and your body says, whoa, what’s this, this is not good for me. You, the immune system, you better fight this. And your immune system makes antibodies to protect you from this macromolecule.

Miriam Knight: The gut really is the prime mover in our immune system. You talk about the cheesecloth syndrome. What exactly is going through the holes in the leaky gut? Tom O’Bryan: Yes. When you eat food, proteins are like a pearl necklace. The hydrochloric acid that’s made in your stomach undoes the clasp of the pearl necklace. Now you’re holding a string of pearls. The other enzymes in your body that your

So, if the macromolecule is chicken, you make antibodies to chicken. Now you’re allergic to chicken or bananas or rice or beef or carrots. And these are Omtimes.com

the people that do a 90-food panel, a blood test to see what they’re allergic to, and it comes back they’re allergic to 25 or 30 different foods. And it’s, oh, my God, that’s everything I eat. Well, of course, it is because your immune system’s trying to protect you. These macromolecules are getting into the bloodstream, and they shouldn’t get in there. So, what do you do? Stop eating the foods, heal the gut, stop tearing the cheesecloth and heal the damage that’s there, wait six months, go back and check, and now you’re allergic to two foods or three instead of 20 or 25. Miriam Knight: Hmm. Now, you have a reference to blood tests for the different antibodies. Tom O’Bryan: Well, the blood test is easy to do, but sweet talking your doctor can be a real nuisance, can be a pain because so many doctors just don’t know about this, and they think, ah, what are you talking about, there’s no such thing. Of course, there is. Just read the studies. So, a blood test came out six years ago that looks at 24 Omtimes.com

different tissue antibodies. Where’s the weak link in your chain, where is it? And this blood test looks at six different antibodies to your brain, three to your heart, your lungs, your liver, your bones, your muscles, your kidneys, your stomach, your intestines to see where the weak link is right now. I mean, where is your chain being pulled. Hopefully, you identify this before there’s been so much tissue damage from these elevated antibodies that you now start getting symptoms. Hopefully, you can identify early. And the science is very clear on this. And what the scientists say is that you can arrest the development of autoimmune disease by healing the gut. So, to your question about the gut, the gut is critically important in reversing whatever autoimmune mechanism is going on for you. And what we talk about a lot in the book is how do you evaluate the gut, how do you see what its functional capabilities are right now, what do you do if you have a problem, what kind of problems might you have and

what do you do about it.

you feel that sick, good for you.

Miriam Knight: Now, you have a transition protocol that you recommend even before or if people can’t get to convince their doctor to order a blood test. Tell us about that.

But, you can’t tell that food’s bad for you when you’re eating it all the time unless it gives you stomach pain. Those are the lucky ones. If it gives you brain fog or thyroid problems or muscle aches or lack of energy, you can’t tell it’s the food you ate last night that’s doing that to you. That’s why give it three weeks - no wheat, no dairy, no sugar for three weeks. Eat everything else you want, but none of those, and just notice how you feel.

Tom O’Bryan: We have found this has worked so many times. When people can’t afford to do the test or, for whatever reason, their doctor won’t do it for them, the recommendation for three weeks, eat all the vegetables you want. Eat all the quality meats that you want, no lunch meat, no inexpensive meats, and eat rice and Quinoa, maybe amaranth, some grains, but don’t eat any wheat, no wheat at all, none, and no dairy, and no sugar, three weeks. Just give it three weeks and notice what happens to your body and how you feel. People are blown away when, all of a sudden, You just notice that all of a sudden, you’re feeling so much better. And when people do this, and then they go out and have a pizza, they come in and say, oh, doc, I felt so sick the next day. I say, good, good, no one can argue with you when

What you put in your mouth determines how you function. The smartest thing you could do is make sure that what’s on the end of your fork is actually healthy for you. But, it takes a little bit of study to figure out what’s healthy for you and what’s not. You can’t blindly go along anymore and believe what they tell you on television. Miriam Knight: Can you tell us the connection between weight and toxicity? Tom O’Bryan: Yes, of course. When we’re exposed to toxic chemicals, our body has a Omtimes.com

defense mechanism that tries to isolate those chemicals and keep them out of the bloodstream and out of circulation. Why? To protect the brain because 20 to 25 percent of all the blood’s in the brain at any one time, and it’s very, very sensitive tissue. So, we store these toxic chemicals in our body. Where do we store them? In our fat cells. That’s where most them are stored - also in the bone, but mainly in the fat cells. So, your fat cells start to swell. They swell with all these, they’re called endocrine disrupting chemicals. Endocrine means hormone - so these hormones disrupting chemicals. So, you’re disrupting your thyroid function. You’re disrupting your testosterone male function. You’re disrupting your estrogenprogesterone female function because these toxic chemicals get into the cells, and then the body holds more water, the fat cells swell, they swell, and so you gain weight. And when people start to detox, if they do it properly, the result does not only do they feel better and think better and function Omtimes.com

better, but they lose weight. That’s why my friend Dr. Bill Davis wrote this great book called Wheat Belly some years ago, and he talked about the tremendous amount of weight loss that occurs for most people when they got wheat free. It doesn’t mean mostly wheat free. Going wheat free means going wheat free, no cheating. And when you do that, many, many people will shed 10 pounds, 15 pounds in a month without counting calories because they’re still eating a lot of food. But, they just start shedding some of these toxins. The fat cells start flushing, flushing out some of the toxins. Miriam Knight: I thought it was important that you pointed out the necessity to drink a lot of water, that that’s the easiest way to get rid of the toxins without having an adverse reaction. Tom O’Bryan: Oh, it’s a critical first step, it’s critical. You cannot start detoxing until you’re able to eliminate properly. Because when you start mobilizing all of these toxins onto your cells, if you have average or less than

average bowel movements, or you don’t drink enough water, you’re not urinating often enough, all these toxins that have been in storage are now in the bloodstream, you will get really sick. You have to make sure that your bowels are working really well first and that you’re drinking plenty of water. It’s about somewhere between-somewhere about a half ounce of water per pound body weight. So, I weigh 180. That’s 90 ounces of water a day, 90, nine-zero. So, if you weigh 120, that’s 60 ounces of water a day. It’s almost a gallon every day without exception, every day. And most of us don’t do that, and so we’re stagnant. It’s like things aren’t moving very well. And just like a stream, if it’s a fast-flowing stream, the water tends to be a little bit clearer than if it’s slow, barely moving, stagnant stream. And that’s the way our bloodstream is. You’ve got to keep things moving. So, you have to have enough liquid for that to occur, and Coca-Cola doesn’t do it, lemonade won’t do it, ice tea won’t do it. It’s got to be water, pure water, the cleanest water that you can get your hands on.

Miriam Knight: I want to point out to our listeners that eliminating sugar also means eliminating sugar substitutes. Tell us why. Tom O’Bryan: Oh, my goodness, the sugar substitutes are much, much worse. If you’re gonna eat sugar, eat sugar. I don’t think you should, but if you are gonna eat sweets, eat sugar because the sugar substitutes disrupt your microbiome. They completely change the microbiome to a non-healthy, fat storing, increase weight microbiome. So, these sugar-free substitutes, the sugar-free pops, the sugarfree desserts and all of that, people gain weight, and it’s because they’ve disrupted their microbiome. The good bacteria in their gut have been destroyed, and more of the bad bacteria that store calories, more of that bacteria starts to develop. The classic example is the Pima Indians. For hundreds of years, maybe thousands of years, they’ve lived in the desert area in the four corners of the Southwest and down into Mexico, you can’t grow stuff there. So, what did they eat? Omtimes.com

They ate whatever they could catch and, whatever they could harvest from cactus and things, some roots maybe. But, it’s not a lush tropical area or a lush area with good soil to grow crops. They had very little to eat. So, those people that did not have efficient storage of calories, they died. And when they die off, they don’t reproduce. But, those whose bodies had efficient storage of calories with what little they could find to eat, their bodies were more efficient at storing those calories, they reproduced. And so, they survived, they reproduced, and in their environment, they thrived. Now, how is it that you are efficient at storing calories? It’s the microbiome. It’s the bacteria in your gut. And if you have too much of the bacteria called Firmicutes, you will store lots and lots of calories. And the Pima Indians have high ratios of Firmicutes in the bacteria of their gut. It saved their culture. It saved their lives. They developed it generation after generation, they became more efficient at using calories and storing calories. It’s a survival mechanism for them. Omtimes.com

Now let’s fast forward to the 1930s, the 1940s. Now the Pima Indians are living on reservations, eating the food that the Bureau of Land Management’s giving them, all the canned stuff and the garbage foods, and what’s the result? Today, 50 percent of Pima Indians are morbidly obese and have type II diabetes by the age of 35, 50% of them. Now they’re eating high calorie, low nutrient density food. They’re eating the garbage that everybody else eats. Miriam Knight: You also pointed out the importance of probiotics and probiotics. Go a little more into the nature of the microbiome. Tom O’Bryan: What’s most important in our gut is the diversity of bacteria, all the different thousands of families of bacteria that are supposed to be there. For every message from the brain going down to the gut, there are nine messages from the gut going up to the brain. And the messages from the gut going up to the brain are from the microbiome, the bacteria in your gut.

They actually control how much brain hormone called neurotransmitters you make, how much serotonin, how much melatonin, how much norepinephrine. That’s controlled, the term is modulated by the microbiome. So, there are thousands of families of bacteria in our gut. Now, back in the 1980s, 1970s, 1980s, we knew that if you take probiotics, the good bacteria, if you take it, it seemed to help, and people got healthier, and that’s true. But, we now know that it’s not any one particular type of probiotic that’s important. It’s the diversity of probiotics that are most important. You want the whole family because of some probiotics in your gut, the good bacteria in your gut control how your heart functions. Other bacteria control how your lungs function. Other bacteria control how your brain functions. So, you want the families of probiotics in your gut, not just one or two. So, the recommendation that we give to our people is that you go to any natural food store, buy four or five different fermented vegetables. Just make sure they’re not pasteurized. You

may buy sauerkraut, you buy kimchi, you buy curry flavored fermented vegetables, you buy fermented beets. Every day, you walk by the refrigerator with a fork, and you just take a fork full, just one fork full every day because the fermentation process of vegetables produces the good bacteria that thrive in your gut. And by varying what you’re taking, you’re inoculating yourself with many, many different families of the good bacteria. And so, you’re helping to protect your gut. So, that’s the probiotics, the good bacteria. It’s okay to take a probiotic supplement, of course. It’s helpful. But, the bigger picture is the diversity, and by eating a few fermented vegetables every day, you’re going to change your microbiome substantially within a few months to a much healthier microbiome. Miriam Knight: I want to really recommend this book to you, The Autoimmune Fix by Dr. Tom O’Bryan, because we’ve only scratched the surface of what you can do to your health, for your health. Why Am I So Tired? By Carl Greer, PhD, PsyD

One of the most common complaints people share with physicians and therapists is that fatigue is interfering with their lives. If you are feeling too tired to take part in enjoyable activities, and fatigue is making you less productive than you want to

Omtimes.com

be, you might be afraid there is no way to fix the problem. That, in turn, can make you anxious or depressed, or guilty and ashamed because you can’t do more. Like many people, you might be wondering, “Why am I so tired and what can I do about it?” Consider where you get your energy. Your sources may be of poor quality. Food fuels your body, and you might eat plenty of calories, but they may not be the right kinds of calories to support health and stamina. If you find conversation to be energizing, time spent socializing with good friends can help you feel less tired. But are you engaging in conversations with people who frustrate and upset you, making you feel drained and stressed? While it might seem that tiredness is purely physical, it may have psychological causes that are strong enough to affect your body’s ability to function well and feel energized. Fatigue can have multiple causes. It can be hard to pinpoint what is going on. However, deep down, you may have some insights that are hidden from

your conscious mind. If you are wondering, “Why am I so tired?” you might want to lie on the earth in a natural area, connecting with the earth’s energy that can affect your own energy field, and do a simple exercise for learning more about what is making you tired. Breathe mindfully, using any technique that will draw your attention to the sensation and rhythm of your breath. As you focus on your breathing, observe the feeling of your body against the grass or sand below your body. You will feel your energy shift if you keep drawing your attention back to your breathing again every time your mind begins to wander. When you feel a shift has happened, and you are relaxed, silently pose the question, “What do I need to know about why I am so tired?” Wait for the answer to appear in your mind as an image, a knowing, or a thought. A word or words may come to you. You might even hear lyrics from a song. Simply observe what you are experiencing. When you are ready, you can sit up or get up and let your mind suggest how Omtimes.com

to interpret the answer you received. One woman tried this and saw a pile of white pouring through a doorway, almost as if a snowdrift had come into a room. She came to realize she had let too much sugar slip into her diet and needed to close the door on it, so to speak.

awareness exists in everyone and has a powerful ability to help you heal whatever physical problems are troubling you. So quiet your mind and activity to access your inner healer and learn what it can tell you about achieving the vitality and energy you seek.

If you can’t muster up energy and do not know why, it makes sense to see a physician. However, a doctor can’t always tell you the psychological reasons for why you feel tired if you are not undernourished and are in good physical shape. You might want to let your unconscious alert you to hidden causes for your tiredness.

Whether your tiredness is rooted in diet or lack of exercise, emotions you need to feel and release, beliefs that are making you feel weary and pessimistic, or any combination of these causes, you can address these issues. A few minutes listening to your inner healer’s guidance might give you answers to the question “Why am I so tired?” and put you back on the road to wellness and away from the fatigue that has been bothering you.

While lying down on the earth and relaxing, you might fall asleep. If so, your body is probably telling you “I need more sleep!” Listen to that message and act on it. Then, try the exercise again when you are more rested. Your wise inner healer might have invaluable insights for you that will clue you into what you can do to improve your health, well-being, and stamina. This wise aspect of a person’s

Spirit Never Ceases To Amaze By John Holland

As many of you know, I’ve been doing this work for over two decades, and I can truly say that Spirit never ceases to amaze me! I was recently featured on ‘The Doctors’ TV Show. They originally booked me to talk

Omtimes.com

about my new book, which I am so proud of: Bridging Two Realms – Learn To Communicate With Your Loved Ones On The Other-Side, but I also volunteered to help someone who’d suffered a loss by doing a reading to help with the process of her bereavement. As always, I’d briefed the studio to make sure they didn’t tell me who I would be reading for or who they’d lost. They chose a lovely woman who had sadly lost her son in the Las Vegas shooting, which at the time had been all over the news. The day before I flew to Los Angeles, something happened that I knew was a sign of Spirit. When it does, I usually take notice, as it’s often very special. Every once in a while, I get inspiration from someone on the Other-Side to buy a specific gift. Sometimes it can be a crystal, a stuffed doll, a flower, a glass star, or even a tiny pewter turtle. I

hear the thought in my head and often find myself just buying an object to take to the reading. So, there I was in this card store buying a get-well card when suddenly I had an image of feathered wings and a heart. I could feel that someone in Spirit was trying to get my attention! Obviously, it was going to be one of those special occasions again when someone was going to get a gift from a loved one who has passed. Nowadays, I don’t dwell on it – nor do I know who’s instructing me. I looked around the store and found a beautiful ornament that was a pair of wings with a blue heart with the words ‘HOPE’ written on it. I just brought it home and put it in my suitcase without further thought. I really wasn’t sure if it were meant for the person I would be reading in Los Angeles or for another time. I just wait for instructions! Anyway, back to the TV show! While I was waiting

Omtimes.com

for whomever I was supposed to read for, I spent a few minutes opening myself to the Spirit World. There was a little delay before we began the filming, so I ended up writing a few notes on what I was receiving. I had the same image of a heart with two wings sprouting out on each side of the heart that I’d got in the card store. I just drew this little image of what I saw in my mind. The sitter then walked in, and the reading began. Her son quickly made himself known to me with a vast amount of validation and evidence. The link was strong. Towards the end of the reading, I heard clear as day in my mind: “Show her the heart.” I asked her if feathered wings with a heart meant anything to her. She replied: “Yes!” So, I asked again: “In a big way?” ... “Yes!” she said once again!

Omtimes.com

I turned over the pad of paper and showed her the drawing I’d done before she’d walked in with the heart and wings. She took a breath and told me it was the exact design she was going to use to print T-shirts to honor of those who’d passed in Las Vegas. She took out her phone, showed me the image she’d designed, so I reached into my bag and gave her the wings and heart ornament. We were both emotional because it had been such a special reading, and her son made sure she knew that he was still with her and involved in her life. I’m honored to help people with loss, and its readings like these that validate my work and make it all the more worthwhile. I have to be honest, even after all these years, people on the OtherSide never cease to amaze me! It’s so obvious that they do what they can to help us here. As she left, I gave her a copy of my new book and

signed it for her. I told her how the book helps people who are bereaved to have their own connections with their loved ones, and how they can develop their own spiritual abilities. They showed the reading on the TV show, including the drawing I’d done for her before she even came into the room. I can take a little of the credit, because I know I’m a good vessel – but in reality … it’s those on the Other-Side that do most of the work! p.s. If you didn’t see the show and would like to watch the reading, here’s the link, which is in two parts as you scroll down.

JOHN’S LESSON It’s simple this week. Keep sending your thoughts and love to your loved ones who’ve passed. Love is

the bridge that keeps you connected. Just know that they do hear and see us and do what they can to help us.

Also, don’t forget to tell the people in your life know how much you love them, and what they mean to you. So you never have to say: could’ve, would’ve or should’ve. It’s never too late to say: “I love you” ... “I forgive you” ... “Please forgive me.” Even if they’ve passed – we are and always will be connected. Live a Soul-filled life!

There are objects in our daily lives that can cause an unusual attraction an be at particular interest to some, mainly because they retain an aura of the sacred and also, they facilitate the creation of a link of communication between ourselves and the divine. But what makes an object sacred? We do not necessarily speak of ceremonial and liturgical objects and accessories, but of any object that becomes

Omtimes.com

unique and irreplaceable for a person or a community. We create sacred objects all the time, even without realizing it. We see them when we look at a child turns a stuffed animal, a blanket, a pillow, into what psychologists call a ‘transitional object’: an object in which people deposit love and time, and that generates great anguish when lost, although many of us try replacing it with an identical one.

The sacred object is a part of us that is exteriorized, a manifestation of our desires, our connection with a transcendent part of ourselves, or supernatural energies. They are like pieces that return to the shore and allow us to reconstruct a memory that has been shipwrecked in the sea of time. Each sacred object is a container of stories that can only be connected to the head of the one who knows them. Two of the great laments of indigenous peoples everywhere are the loss of their original territories and the loss of their ancestral objects. And this is no coincidence since the territory, and sacred objects are the links that exist with the origins and with the gods. If you lose these links, you lose in some cases your soul compass, and there is no way to have contact with reality. The more a sacred object is used, the more precious it becomes, not only because of the energy that it can gather with time and rituals, but also the value of its sanctified utility increases with use.

Generally, sacred objects hold a different energy signature in themselves and are known to change the aura and a general atmosphere of an environment just being present and at the display. Sacred and sanctified objects can withhold a frequency that can continuously vibrate in one location, reenacting the mystical signature they might have picked up during ceremonial activities. One example is ritual candles, they can pick up and vibrate the energy signature or a tone of a liturgical ceremony. While many museums see sacred objects as works of art, people and peoples who preserve them see them as living objects, and every time a lost object is returned, it is received just like a return of missing family member. These objects inhabit a different realm; we understand only part of its reality, just as we do not fully understand our loved ones. Vision + Values = Victory Lead your Team to Success in 2018 By Jennifer McKenna

Cruising through the first quarter marks a time to pause for a moment to consciously ask the question, “Have we kicked off the year in an empowered position?” Just like a computer-generated

Omtimes.com

output, the ‘garbage in, garbage out’ adage holds true for organizations and businesses alike. In other words, how we start often determines how we end. If you feel you missed out on kicking off the new year in a proactive stance, it’s not too late. Here are three timeless (and priceless) power moves that will ensure a strong finish:

determined your vision for where the company will be in one year, three years, five years, and even ten? If not, this is your first step. Your second step is communicating it company-wide. Consider these to be your goals for the year, and in 2019, you can begin the alignment process.

Though these steps may seem lofty, they have the potential to be your greatest grounding force. Let’s break them down into measurable milestones that you can activate at any given time.

Alignment simply means that systems, policies, and communication follow suit with the vision. When what we envision and what we actually do aren’t in sync, we struggle unnecessarily. Our success becomes happenstance, leaving employees feeling disempowered. The absence of a well-understood vision creates a nebulous vibe in the environment that allows everyone to make differing (and sometimes inadvertently conflicting) decisions.

To align your vision, you must first have a Vision. As a business leader, have you and your leadership team

As the Japanese proverb goes, “Vision without action is a daydream. Action without Vision is a nightmare.”

1. Align your Vision 2. Integrate your Values 3. Act with Integrity

Omtimes.com

The second step, Integrate your Values, suggests the same parallels. Again, if you haven’t clearly outlined your company values, you can determine those when you are working on your vision. Establishing a clear Vision and Values are crucial foundational building blocks for your company. Integrating your values suggests that you are prioritizing them. Your company values matter, and when they are clearly woven into the fabric of your culture, it is obvious to everyone who encounters your business. Employees feel a stronger sense of purpose, and customers experience the benefit of that. For example, let’s say one of your company values is Listening. If you have integrated this value into your culture, your employees and customers alike should always feel heard – regardless of whether you agree with

Omtimes.com

what they are saying or not. Or perhaps one of your values is Innovation. This value, if integrated, is evident when both your employees and customers get excited at the thought of what your company is creating next. Fully integrating your values takes time. Be sure not to choose more than six values if you haven’t yet established them. Finally, to Act with Integrity assures that your thoughts, words, and deeds are in line with your company Vision and Values. As a leader, you are expected to walk your talk. When you do, your gratification is boundless. Remember, we live in a world of relativity. The greater your intentions and efforts to live a life of authenticity and a desire to make a positive impact, the more rewards you will reap – and the more you’ll celebrate at year-end.

3 Ways Fear Drives Success

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Do one thing everyday that scares you.” We all have fear. None of us are so lucky to be entirely immune to it. Some choose to be consumed by their fears, while others choose to embrace them, befriend them, and harness them to fuel their dreams. The difference between the two is the former end up living an incomplete life of guilt and Omtimes.com

unhappiness, while the latter emerge stronger, smarter, and more likely to be on the path to success. Fear can paralyze you or help you take that leap forward. After more than 25 years as an entrepreneur, I can tell you that there is only one fear worth having—that you have only today, and only today counts. And you have to maximize today.

A few years ago, I was on a family holiday at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We took a boat into the reef on a beautiful Australian summer day. Not a single ship was in sight. The boat pulled up over a segment of the reef that was barely below the waterline. We jumped into the lovely, warm blue water with our snorkeling gear to enjoy the incredible spectacle that lay hidden underneath. As I was snorkeling and floating along the warm current, suddenly something that looked like a line appeared below me and the warm water turned chillingly cold. The line was the water ridge that plummeted from the safety of the reef into the darkness of the sea. The beautiful sight below me suddenly went pitch black. I realized that I had gone over the reef into the icy ocean and there was a real chance the strong current could carry me away or dump me into the path of a shark. Fear overtook my entire being for a moment, and then survival instinct kicked in. I yanked my head out of the water and saw the reef was barely ten feet away. I started swimming back as fast as I could, probably the fastest

I have ever in my life. Before I knew it, I was back in the beauty and comfort of the reef, but for about twenty numbing seconds, I had gone over to the dark side of Mother Nature and she was scary! One moment I was in a comfortable, warm, and beautiful place without a care and the next moment, I was in a dark, cold abyss. That incident was a stark reminder of how close we all are to the line and how closely this line follows us for all of our lives. Sometimes, we all need a little fear to remind us of what is truly important. There are three things we must remember about fear. 1. Fear is Excitement in Disguise ‘Fear is just excitement in need of an attitude adjustment.’ – A Keeper’s Truth Let’s take the example of skydiving. The idea of stepping off a plane at 14,000 feet altitude into nothingness evokes two completely different responses in two people. Jill is thrilled and excited about Omtimes.com

flying through the sky like a bird, feeling the wind on her face. Jack is paralyzed by fear, imagining worst-case scenarios. In Jill, the adventurous nature lying dormant in all of us awakens to the raw, unrestrained elixir of fear and it gives her an incredible high when she embraces it. But for Jack, just the thought of doing something outside of his comfort zone strikes unimaginable terror in his heart. So, whether you experience fear or excitement really just depends on the lens you choose to look through at the world. It comes down to a choice. Interestingly, young children are the least affected by fear of unknown. Most young kids are far more adventurous and fearless than many adults. As we get older, life has a way of creating layer upon layer of fear in our subconscious. Adulthood clouds our lens with self-doubt and other negative messages we see and hear every day. So, clean your lens and change your focus from fear to excitement. This takes practice, Omtimes.com

so start small and work up to the heavy lifting. 2. What Doesn’t Paralyze You, Energizes You This is my take on the old adage— What doesn’t kill you, makes your stronger. My experience tells me that fear is an unwelcome visitor in our life only when we are pursuing something we really want. That’s usually a sign we are on the right track! Think about all the times you were overcome by fear and there’s a good chance you will notice a pattern. Most likely it was just as you were about to embark on a major transition in your life, or were venturing into something completely new and unknown. This is completely normal. In fact, I would go so far as to say, if you are not afraid, you should perhaps revisit your decision. In a sense, fear shows us the way. It reveals something we need to work on. What are you going do with it? Do you allow it to paralyze you, or guide you? Allow your fear to be an energizing force that propels you forward. Let it uncover what you need to do–and then go do it.

3. Fear is a Great Motivator for Growth At an evolutionary level, it was a keen sense of fear during the time of the caveman that effectively helped keep humans out of danger. But now that life has evolved, and we no are longer in survival mode, that sense of fear hasn’t really gone away. It just manifested into something else. We are now afraid of change, uncertainty, and unfamiliar things. Living in this type of fear leaves you stuck in one place forever, in an illusory comfort zone that is akin to a child’s security blanket. We all have one and carry it around just as Linus does in the Peanuts cartoons. Security blankets are like substitute mothers. They give comfort and provide feelings of safety and security, much as our mothers would do for us. But, there comes a time when we must leave the childhood nest and with it, the security blanket. Humans are wired for familiarity and it’s just easy to stick to the familiar. But unless you learn to let go of that security blanket, you will never know what lies on the other side of fear. A life of

predictability and familiarity is not a life of growth. Leaning into fear is hard to do, because it makes us vulnerable. When you take that leap, sometimes you fly, but sometimes you crash and burn. In both cases, you are guaranteed to end up in a new place. In summary, your life expands as your courage and willingness to grow expands. Lean into your fear today by taking small steps and allow it to widen your world and guide you on your path to success. I WOULDN’T LIKE TO BE BORN IN THE EIFFEL TOWER by Kaya & Christiane Muller

Omtimes.com

We were invited for dinner and a 6-yearold girl whose name is Camille was present; she was with her mother and grandmother in Paris (France). We listened to her with great interest and

profoundly as we do when we are in presence of children. In the conversation, her mother explained to Camille that she was born in her belly…the grandmother then added that Camille’s mother was born in her belly and she hugged her daughter. Camille looked at her grandmother and said to her: “I wouldn’t like to be born in the Eiffel Tower…”. Everyone was astonished by her immediate answer! What did she mean? If we listen to this comment with a rational vision, we would simply consider it to be incoherent. In fact, you will see that it was very coherent symbolically speaking. Her grandmother is a nice person, but she has a tendency to be too emissive and she is a woman of power, who is not always right with her children even though she loves them tenderly. She is the President

of a multinational and she materializes sometimes with too much emissivity; with her great charisma she sometimes has an intensity that takes over the whole place and that tends to diminish her children who work with her. The Eiffel Tower, is an iron lattice tower located in Paris. It has become both an international cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010. Symbolically, it is a collective symbol that is well-known and therefore related to renown, celebrity, an icon of France, and more specifically Paris, a symbol of a city representing fashion, entertainment, a lot of matter and activities and, in

Omtimes.com

its negative aspects, a need for luxury, intense emissivity, over performance and a superficial life. So Camille was saying that she did not want to follow her grandmother’s path in the material world; her soul recognized that her grandmother sometimes has distorted power and too many needs to materialize excessively; she tends to want luxuries too much. Since giving birth also means to give birth to a new project, to a new inner child, and also sometimes to a concrete child, we can understand in depth what this new child, young Camille was saying. Reaching Personal Happiness 8 Happiness Tips from the stoic Emperor Marcus Aurelius By Cathedral of the Soul

The Genius Stoic Emperor Marcus Aurelius shares some fundamental points on reaching happiness in this lifetime.

Omtimes.com

The Stoics were well known for mastering the art of being invulnerable, that is, maintaining a neutral and cheerful mood despite any event or adverse event that could occur no matter how big or small it was. To live happily is an inward power of the soul. “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” A formidable example of this philosophy is the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius whose mandate in the great Rome endured between German invasions, attacks from the east and a vast revolt in several provinces. Thanks to his disciplined behavior, the emperor kept track of his most profound thoughts and thoughts in his diary, which he merely called Meditations. The book is a source of great wisdom and has been appreciated for several eras by rulers, men of power and people of all kinds; in it, he

poured out some of the wisest advice to put Stoicism into practice day by day. On His own words: ““The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing, in so far as it stands ready against the accidental and the unforeseen, and is not apt to fall.” We have selected 8 of these tips that we should all consider. People will be rude. “When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so, none of them can hurt

Omtimes.com

me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands, and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.” It is not always that we can be surrounded only by those who make us feel good, we must prepare ourselves to confront life as it is, not as we would like it to be. That includes being ready to face the way others act. We have power over our way of being “Choose not to be hurt, and you will not feel hurt. If you do not feel hurt, you will not be hurt.” For the Stoics nothing has a value in itself; The way we feel about things is the way we have chosen to handle them.

Omtimes.com

If the opinion you have of yourself means more to you than the opinion others may have of you, you will not feel degraded if someone does not share the concept that you do. “A person’s worth is measured by the worth of what he values.” Kindness is the best weapon “As an antidote to malice, goodness has been granted to us.” All attitudes tend to perpetuate themselves in those who practice them with the degree of intensity with which they do it. If we act with kindness every time, the kind ones will thank us and those that are not will be disarmed because they do not expect that answer from anyone. “We ought to do good to others as simply as a horse runs, or a bee makes honey,

or a vine bears grapes season after season without thinking of the grapes it has borne.” Every action defines who we are “To hurt others is to hurt oneself. To commit injustice is to make it against oneself. It degrades you. You can also commit injustice by doing nothing. “ The choices we make daily with others mold our being, each one has repercussions both on the one who receives them and on the one who commits them. Immobility is another way of doing harm, sometimes not deciding is worse than choosing wrongly. Self-love is also built with the love that one professes for others. Tolerance is in not judging “People exist for each other. You can instruct them or tolerate them. “

We are all part of an elaborate network that binds us to others, we cannot escape, and isolation will only make us live a life unworthy of being lived. Looking with compassion on others allows us to abandon or mitigate our judgments about them. Everything is temporary, especially our own life. We will all die from one moment to the next. “It is foolish to try to avoid the guilt of others. Just try and escape yours. “ You have to know how to share and teach, but that does not make us responsible for others. We must take responsibility only for ourselves. Trying to change the way others behave to adapt to what we expect from others will only lead to unhappiness because the actions of others and their consequences are theirs. “If any man despises me,

Omtimes.com

that is his problem. My only concern is not doing or saying anything deserving of contempt.” The result of our efforts is passenger No matter what your goal is, it does not matter what your goals are. The scopes of your actions or not, you are doomed to lose everything you build and obtain. It has never been different. “Are you worried about your reputation? Look how we are all forgotten very soon. The abyss of eternal time devours everything. The emptiness of those hands that applaud. “ “People who are moved by posthumous fame forget that soon those who remember them will die too.” The beauty of living is that nothing remains quiet, everything changes and from one moment to another, it disappears.

Omtimes.com

“The memory of everything is very soon overwhelmed in time.” The peace you need is in you “The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are.” The Stoics spoke of the soul as an “inner city” that we can reach whenever we want. Here live the feelings of calm and quiet that we all carry inside. It also contains the answers we are looking for outside. “There is nowhere you can go that is more peaceful, freer of interruptions than your own soul ... retire to consult with your own soul and then return to confront what lies ahead.” “The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.” We only have one

opportunity to live and the reality of death. “After death, there is no” us “that can suffer any harm. Existence is full of light and darkness. One of the fears that have enslaved man the most has always been the fear of dying. “Death should not be a frightening shadow that accompanies our steps. Instead, it can be a constant light that reminds us of our own finitude.” “Despise not death, but welcome it, for nature wills it like all else. “ “Death is a release from the impressions of the senses, and from desires that make us their puppets, and from the vagaries of the mind, and from the hard service of the flesh.” Marcus Aurelius In the words of the Spanish poet Antonio Machado: “Death is something we

should not fear because, while we are, death is not and when death is, we are not.” Nothing is assured, the fragility of life should also motivate us to live it as well as possible. «You could stop living right now. Let that determine what you do, say and think. “ “Accept death with gratitude, as a simple dissolution of the elements that make up everything that is alive. If continually changing from one to another does not harm the individual elements, why be afraid of their change and separation? It’s something natural, and nothing natural is bad. “ “The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.” If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” –Marcus Aurelius

The dynamics of the web of connections we make is one of the most prominent aspects of human existence: how we interlace with each other’s existence in a meaningful way.

Feng Shui addresses a nonobvious relationship that you have with your own physical space. Where you live and where you work is teeming with energy, which some people call “qi.

Omtimes.com

This energy is supporting you or undermining you, and one goal in Feng Shui is to enhance the energy which already supports you and diminish the energy which could be sabotaging you. Once your relationship with your own physical space (home or work) is more in balance, then it will make real-life connections with other people more harmonious. This is a critical point: in Feng Shui we are actually tinkering with a hidden magnetic field, to change its influence on occupants. We are not just changing our attitude or how we use the space. You can think of your own home or workspace like a radio station which is both transmitting and receiving signals. The trickle-down effect is that your own “feng shui environment will influence the quality and quantity of your relationships with others. This is all inclusive to include

family members, co-workers, and friends. In fact, people in the West have been seeking out Feng Shui advice for a lot of reasons, but one of the top reasons has been to attract more love and romance. As a classically trained practitioner, I have seen over and over that your physical environment really does influence love, romance and every other type of relationship, personal or professional. Most of this energy or influence is not apparent to the naked eye. As an example, in the Flying Star School of Feng Shui, we can predict which houses might steer a couple toward divorce or other dwellings which attract a lot of sexual activity, just by knowing when the house was built and what direction it is facing! These are actually coordinates of spacetime theory! The adjustments used to

improve relationships can range from elemental objects added to a room, to even exterior changes outside in the landscaping. Sometimes a client can be informed about better sleeping directions or even a better house type altogether if they are in the process of house hunting. There is a myriad of solutions and not just one way to address relationship issues. Just like people, some spaces have inherent personalities, and they impose those energies on the people who live inside. Some houses are simply more conducive to good relationships than others. But every space can stand improvement. We can’t overestimate the importance of being in good, nurturing relationships. Often, I go to a home or business where there are a lot of arguments, deception or people merely withdrawing from their relationships

their mistakes. An emotional manipulator is professional at placing blame on others. If he forgets something, it’s because you did not remember it. If he’s late for a date, it’s because you told him the wrong time. Every time that person makes a mistake, it turns you into your mistake before you even realize what’s going on. An emotional manipulator will never admit guilt. 7. Manipulative people hurry the manipulated to make decisions Someone who is manipulating always rushes the other to make a decision. This person rarely allows you to take the time to analyze your options and make a wise choice. They know that by doing this, they are more likely to make things go as they wish. 8. Manipulative people actions

do not match their words Emotional manipulators use language to control people. They use flattering words and make promises to make you trust them but never have any intention of keeping their word. When they break a promise, they will blame you. 9. Manipulative people make you believe you are always negotiating As part of twisting your words, an emotional manipulator will make you think that you are negotiating. When it comes to situations that you disagree with, it has an indirect way of twisting the conversation to make you believe that you have settled on a middle ground. In fact, they are getting what they want, and you do not. Every time. 10. Manipulative people lie constantly Part of the daily routine of

an emotional manipulator is lying. He lies about exceptional situations, small details, and things that do not even matter. Emotional manipulators lie partly just to see if they can make you believe in whatever they would like. They consistently embellish stories and invent things because they are incapable of being honest and telling the truth. 11. Manipulative people tend to distort your words At the end of a conversation with someone who is emotionally manipulating you, you are completely confused. An emotional manipulator is an expert in twisting your words and making you question your own thoughts, opinions, and feelings. If you express an opinion they don’t like like, they will casually, but intentionally convince you that you do not really feel that way.

The 12 Healing Celtic Crystals

The Celts had a firm belief in the power of stones. From the standing stones at Carnac and megaliths at Stonehenge to the Winter Solstice tomb at Newgrange and the looming mound in Glastonbury, stones have been used to mark territories, honor grave sites,

Omtimes.com

invoke seasonal ceremonies, revered as touchstones and utilized as altars or “mass rocks” for centuries. The Lia Fail (Stone of Destiny) is often referred to as the Coronation Stone or Jacob’s Pillar and is where many high kings of Ireland were crowned. The Turoe Stone in Galway, Ireland is considered the omphalos or “navel” stone. This “earth navel” is considered the meeting place between living mortals, the gods and the dead. On the summit of Tops Hill in County Donegal, lies Beltany Stone Circle, an example of one of the best Irish stone circles. On the slopes of Mount Tullig, in County Kerry, lies Caherdaniel Fort, a great example of a stone ring fort. These are just a few images of some of the sites of war, worship, and wells that dot the Celtic landscapes. Below I have compiled a short list of some of my favorite stones associated with Celtic lore, stones local to the Gaelic regions and crystals that have been associated in “current times,” which embrace the symbolism of the past.

Chiastolite: The “Cross Stone” This crystal is a variety of the “Earth Stones” or Andalusite. It exhibits the axis and angle in a different color from the rest of the crystal forming a natural cross. This is a polymorph mineral as it shares the same chemical makeup but a different crystal structure with one or more minerals particularly kyanite and sillimanite. This powerful crystal balances one’s perspective in both creativity and practicality. It is used as a sign of devotion towards awareness and dispels negativity. It signifies both death and re-birth and helps one to understand the realization of immortality. It is used as a bridge for “crossing over.” It helps one to assimilate during times of change. It provides insight into answers when problem-solving. This stone has a reputation for astral journeys and is used as a gateway into the mysterious. This stone allows for the overcoming of fear, the facing of reality and overcoming of the unknown. Chiastolite is Omtimes.com

used to attune to our soul’s purpose. It encourages ones survival instincts and is grounding and protecting. This stone is said to embrace the emotions and assist in spiritual journeys. Bloodstone: Bloodstone, also called “Heliotrope” (named for its sun “red” glow - Helios - setting over a green sea) is from the quartz family (Si02). It is a type of chalcedony, similar to Jasper. The martyr stone aptly named, due to the legend of this stone being at the foot of the cross and stained by the drops of blood from Jesus. Metaphysically, bloodstone is used to either promote a calm, tranquil atmosphere that is grounding or revitalize insufficient energy. An excellent stone for mental exhaustion. This stone represents both courage and strength and is used for achieving these attributes. It is associated with honesty and integrity and is useful in removing obstacles in life. A classic stone for wealth, it attracts abundance and good luck.

Copper: Copper occupies the same family of the periodic table as silver and gold since they each have ones-orbital electron forming metallic bonds. The similarity in electron structure makes copper, silver, and gold similar in many ways. This mineral is an excellent energy conductor! Sends and amplifies thoughts, healing energy, and gem electrical energy into wearer’s energy field. Because of this, it encourages the physical/emotional bodies to find alignment. This is a warming stone. Copper helps to release the “excess charge” of resentment and anger. Its mineral makes up encourages the balance between warm sun energy and cool lunar energy. Copper is often known as the “love metal” as it helps us open up to love energies and physically helps with sexual imbalances. Copper ore was mined in Ireland dating back to about 2000 BC, particularly in the areas near the Caherdaniel Fort Ring and West Cork was well-known for its copper mining industry.

Fairy Quartz: This crystal has been given several names such as Spirit Quartz, Faery Amethyst or Spirit Druzy. Encrusted with hundreds of small, terminated points, this is also referred to as Cactus Quartz. These stones are named for their delicate and fanciful forms in which the crystals “sparkle” as if to have an internal battery. Representing the attributes of grace, greatness and gratitude, these brilliant, yet humble stones lend a relaxing, peaceful sensitivity when held in your hands. They are utilized in connecting to fairies and guardian angels, beings who are loving and benevolent. Also, worth mentioning is Crackle “Faerie” Quartz. This is crystal quartz that is tumbled and dyed, which gives the gems their colors, crackle, and spark! They represent the energies of both the fire and water element. Quartz is the ultimate power stone. This master crystal resonated with our own bodies and has

great influence over us. The addition of the color adds another layer of intrigue and mystery, believed to attract the fey of the woods, wells, and highlands. Quartz harmonizes and balances. It enhances energy and thoughts and purifies the spiritual, mental and physical body. It is also a powerfully protective stone, allowing refined light and energy within. Third in this group is Star Mica or Fairy Mica. It’s common name, Muscovite or Mica, appears in sheet-like layers or scales, masses or tabular crystal. It is the reflection stone. It allows one to reflect on their past and present situations and gives one the opportunity to both acknowledge and eliminate any traits one wishes to detach from. Mica provides for clarity in visions and self-reflection. It can be used during fasting times to help reduce hunger, provide energy, relieve dehydration, bring sparkle to the eyes, sheen to the hair, as well as, help in situations of insomnia.

Flint: This is an ancient stone used for thousands of years by Prehistoric man to create a spark for fire and for making weapons. Known as “knapping,” Flint would be struck on an angle, leaving the sharp edges exposed. This was perfect for fashioning axes and arrowheads. These relics have been known for centuries as “Elf Shot.” This refers to flint’s solid metaphysical history. Elf Shot attributed to the belief that elves or fairies would shoot an object, visible or invisible, into an animal or sometimes human, causing it to suffer in pain from the flint arrow. Flint has been used for protection throughout history. Both in Scotland and in Ireland, Flint has been used as an amulet worn for protection against evil, including mischievous fairies and elves. Shaman throughout the world has utilized this stone in ritual circles, as remedies for clearing unwanted spirits and negative energy as well as for rituals to exorcise earthbound spirits from places, which are

haunted. Flint can be used as a protective weapon when undergoing a spiritual quest or astral journey. Flint represents the powers of elemental Earth and Fire. Staurolite: “Fairy Cross” This mineral is a talisman of good luck! Historically, this stone is said to be formed from the tears of fairies when they were brought the news of the death of Christ. Built in the shape of a cross, this unusual stone is beautiful and powerful on your altar or meditation space, around your neck or in your pocket. Represents four elements and joining of spirit with earth/matter. Spirituality, compassion, allowing, dis-attachment. The focus is centered on the here and now. This stone provides protection and grounding energy. Green Goldstone Not particularly known as a “Celt stone,” green goldstone is fascinating. It is a stone I cannot seem to take my eyes off of. It harkens back to the alchemy of the Druids

as Goldstone is a man-made stone, a type of glass that sparkles due to flecks of copper. Originally created when alchemists were working towards creating gold. Gently uplifting, Goldstone is also said to help one stay calm and stabilize the emotions. Called the stone of ambition and drive, it is said to help attain one’s goals. It is for this indirect connection that I love carrying it around as my personal good luck stone! Merlinite This mystical stone is a combination of manganese oxide with inclusions of both potassium and barium. This variety occurs in Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Associated by name, after the great wizard, Merlin, who was King Arthur’s legendary mentor, this stone is considered the Stone of Self-Mastery. It exhibits traits of duality: black and white, day and night, light and dark. Merlinite waves its wand of energy to communication with the Archetypal energies

within nature itself, including the plant kingdom, mineral kingdom, animal spirits and the elemental allies, such as the fey folk, pixies. Dryads and gnomes. This stone encourages the world of dreams and dreaming, teaching us the fundamental of mysticism, past incarnations, and recollections. Excellent stone to use at Samhain, as it eloquently lifts the veil between the spiritual and the physical planes assisting in contacting souls who have passed over. It opens one’s energy field to its innate capacity to serve as a channel for manifestation. It has the ability, as a kind mentor would, to teach us to influence outer elemental processes to help empower our lives. Preseli (Bluestone): The Preseli Bluestone is the stone that was used at the Stonehenge standing stones. This stone only occurs in one place in the entire world, Carn Meini in the Preseli Mountains. This site is now protected, and stones can no longer be taken, but the stones that are being

Omtimes.com

sold were mined many years ago before this law took effect. That makes them a unique item because eventually, they will run out. The properties of Preseli stone include help with dream work, past life recall, willpower, spiritual gift enhancer, powerful as a meditation stone and has been used for protection, energy enhancer, dowsing and for receiving messages. Keep a piece close to you in your working environment or under your pillow. These stones make a strong earth connection and are excellent for grounding and create a connection to the heart of nature. They are associated with the Third Eye and their ability to help develop psychic intuition. Legend has it that Merlin transported stones from the Preseli Hills to Stonehenge for the construction of Camelot and King Arthur’s Round Table. The Welsh legends called the “Tales of Youth,” come from The Preseli Hills, and it is said that the way into “Annwn,” the Welsh fairyland, can be found here too. Indeed, Pentre

Omtimes.com

Ifan sometimes called “The Womb of Cerridwen,” which is also built of Preseli Bluestone and located within the Preseli Hills is said to be one of the main gateways into the realm of Fairies. River Stones: Rivers, streams, springs, wells, and lakes are all sacred bodies of water in the Celtic belief system. Stones found along these bodies of waters, wells, and rivers are all considered sacred mementos. Formed in the mountains that have been plucked from the ground by rain, floods, and landslides, these stones are then rolled and tumbled by the river for hundreds even thousands of miles until they are round and polished. Riverstone promotes rapid change. It can be used with other gemstones for a clearer intention. These stone are believed to carry sacred powers such as protection, good luck, and act as a powerful talisman. Snow White Quartz: Also known as Snow Quartz

or Milky Quartz, it is a variety of Rock Quartz crystal with microscopic water bubbles and inclusions of carbon dioxide. This gives the stone it’s “snowy,” white, or “milky” appearance. Snow White Quartz is the Observation Stone. Like the introspective and contemplative time of winter, this unique stone allows us to notice more the actions around us, both good and bad, helping us to perhaps see ourselves a little better. It can help us to meditate on parts of our personality that we admire and those we need to change. Compelling us from thought to action. Snow White Quartz represents the wonder and innocence of pure snow. It gives us the hopefulness of a new bride on her wedding day and the child-like innocence we all should remember. It is also associated with the whitehaired sage, filled with good advice and wisdom, who need not constantly express it, but to just “be” with it. Therefore, the stone represents a gentle calm and soothing stone useful for meditation and the

seeking of wisdom or truth through our “inner journey.” We learn life lessons through compassion and empathy, and this stone allows a clearer mental picture to invite these traits inward to us. Smoky Quartz: Smoky Quartz is a grounding stone. It is used most often to overcome depression, soothing nightmares, and stress. Quartz stimulates the natural crystal in body tissues and fluids to resonate at the highest healing frequency. The clearest smoky quartz is the most intense, powerful tools inducing Alpha/ deep meditation. Because of this situation, it benefits also include channeling higher guidance, deep relaxation and helping with unconditional love. Heightens your understanding of nature and concerns for the environment. Andrew Pacholyk MS L.Ac http://www.peacefulmind.com/ celtic-healing Therapies for healing mind, body, spirit

Lessons Grief Taught Me By Marcia Sirota, MD.

When I was 25-years-old, and early on in my medical training, I got a phone call from my mom one day. With no preamble, she blurted out, “She’s gone!” At first, I didn’t know who mom was talking about. Then she said the name. It was Esther, my infant niece. Inconceivably, Esther had received a clean bill of health at her six-month check-up, but then two weeks later while she was sleeping in her crib, my brother noticed her Omtimes.com

suddenly turning blue. By the time the paramedics arrived, she was gone. At the hospital, they called it “crib death.” I was utterly unprepared to hear that my healthy baby niece -- the first grandchild in the family -- had died suddenly and for no apparent reason. I got off the phone in a state of profound shock and grief. What followed was a strange time for the family. It was a

time of firsts -- the first loss of a young person, the first time that my brother (who was usually so stoic and unemotional) asked me for help, the first time I saw my father cry.

When you hear the dreaded words, “she’s gone,” or “he’s gone,” as horrible as this may be, it’s an opportunity to rise to the occasion. Or you can fall into despair.

It was also a time of shifting roles in the family -- my brother became the vulnerable one, my father for a change had nothing to say and me, the shy one, I became the go-to person. The one who ran interference after the funeral, screening who could go in to see my brother, and who would be directed elsewhere, as he sat alone in a quiet back room.

When your heart is broken, you can let it be broken open to feel more love and compassion for yourself and others. Or, you can close up tightly against your pain, withdrawing from others or lashing out in confusion and rage.

I discovered reserves of strength within myself, in my ability to comfort and support those around me and in my capacity to return to school, to focus on my studies and finish writing the exams that had been interrupted by the funeral. It was my first lesson in how tragedy and grief can bring out the best in people, or the worst, and my realization that we all have an important choice to make at such times.

This was the first significant loss I experienced, but it wasn’t the last, and since then, every time I’ve found myself aching with that familiar pain, I’ve been reminded of the choice we all get to make when stricken by grief. Each of us gets to ask ourselves: Will I let this situation bring out my best self or my worst? Will I choose to be there for myself and others or will I decide to fall apart? Grief is a tragedy, but it’s also a gift. When it comes to you, as it most assuredly will someday, which choice will you make?

Respecting the Journey Leigh Burton

We travel along the journey continually reaching new levels of awareness. Waking up one could say. With awakening comes responsibility and the need to respect the power that comes with such a gift.

Omtimes.com

The number one thing that drags us backward is judgment. Understanding how to live each day while checking in on the level of judgment we can easily get trapped in will open us to the highest level of abundance that each step in our journey can provide. Judgment is natural and human. It is a part of us that exists just as much as love. But living in the belief that judgment is a bad thing creates darkness around it that shuts down the portal that can help us move along our journey comfortably. Judgment is an opinion. It is when the opinion becomes an identifying marker that separates us from others and the opportunity to develop. We can’t not judge. How else would we be able to make choices? Opinions create the understanding of the value of what is presenting itself. Whether it is a person, object or situation. Is it useful to us, or does it feel like it can be a threat to our well-being? As we develop, our opinions will change and so does what we believe is to our benefit. Our belief stems from what is

core to our identity. So, it is a good thing, right? Only if it is understood and cared for as a tool and not a way to project our fear. When we open our hearts and explore what it is about our person that precursors the judgment, we can grow, develop and be open to the abundance that we endeavor. Every time there is judgment there is an opportunity to open the door to letting go of an unhealthy attachment, that can only lead to another chance to grow into the best version of ourselves. Our mind and body connect the dots and engage the circumstance simultaneously. The result can be mayhem on the body, our vessel that deserves every opportunity to take us where it is that we want to go. If the circumstance is worthy of what we individually consider a label of negativity, the body will deplete its life force much more rapidly. Like a car that uses much more gasoline. Would it not be wiser to utilize each moment with less consumption? Omtimes.com

A perfect example is a shy person being at a social event approached by a gregarious and robust individual. One could quickly identify this person as pompous or overwhelming. While the initial thought is perfectly natural, the consequences are undesirable. Without being aware, a shy person will inevitably become guarded. Move to the next person, and we are received as defended. This person is not likely to open up and share what they honestly have to offer. Furthermore, the guarded person is far less capable of giving their own best self. There is nothing amiss with being shy or confident and social. Each allows the other to be recognized. It allows us to make informed decisions about who we are comfortable being individual. Still, as humans, we fall into the judgment trap countless times every day and suffer a great deal of consequence, likely unaware of what we are doing or what we could be missing out on. We have the option to respect our

Omtimes.com

journey and that with whom we connect with merely by checking in with ourselves and staying clear of the potential threat of devaluing what we have to share with each other. Unraveling the mystery isn’t hard. It takes acceptance that we are all human and forgiveness. Be grateful for the trigger that presented itself as an opportunity to look inside and determine what can be improved so that we can become our better selves. In doing so, we acknowledge the power of synchronicity and allow it to exist in our world. A simple reminder, “What is it about me that is coming up? is all we need. Respect the journey and receive the gifts life has to offer. Are Personal Core Values Still Important for a Conscious Living? By OMTimes

What is important to you? Your morning meal? Take time to walk with your dog? Deliver the report on time? What is of value to you? “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” –Albert Einstein

Omtimes.com

What are values? Your values are a witness to your true self because they are what matters most to you when it comes to your personal and professional life. Your values influence that little voice in your head that tells you whether you should worry about something and whether you should prioritize your time. Your values are the things you believe are essential in the way you live and work. Your core values help determine what you really want out of life while simultaneously acting to measure your satisfaction with your current situation and live in a meaningful way. Core values define who we are and help us find our purpose. Here are some excellent examples of value keywords: Reliability, Respect, Loyalty, Commitment, Teamwork,

Caution, Efficiency Diversity, Humility. Some of these values have been instilled in you since childhood. They can be cultural or learned through observation of your family and discussions about your interests. We are educated about our values through our environment Maybe now, in adulthood, you realize you’re in love with these same things. It is not bad to share core values with those around you, but it can be detrimental to live a life that does not honor those values. How do core values affect our daily decisions? If you don’t set a baseline standard for what you’ll accept in life, you’ll find it’s easy to slip into behaviors and attitudes or a quality of life that’s far below what you deserve. Tony Robbins We make decisions based on

Omtimes.com

our core values every day, but sometimes we forget the significant choices we face, big and small, and the potential stress these choices can create. When you can identify your values and make choices that align with them, life suddenly becomes a little more comfortable. But when you act on autopilot and do not allow your values to match your choices, you can turn into someone incredibly unhappy and perhaps not consciously knowing why. Discovering our core values affects both small and great things in our lives. Remember when you bought something you did not really need, but wanted to have? You made the decision that spending money wisely was not valuable to you. This disconnection results from living a life that does not correlate with its core values. When you begin to make those choices that seem small now but taking into account what

Omtimes.com

is valuable to you, you start to feel less stress in other aspects of your life. And the best part is, you do not need hard work, just some introspection and self-awareness. Knowing your values makes it easy to make important decisions, such as taking a job, starting a business, or making a significant change. How do we discover our personal values? Core values are essential to us. By discovering the things that matter most to us, we can lead a better life. Knowing your core values can undoubtedly synchronize with your morale. After all, your standards have a direct impact on your behavior patterns. “You must look within for value but must look beyond for perspective.” –Denis Waitley Your own experience will be your best device to realize what is valuable to you. For example, think of a very

joyful time in your life. Why were you so joyful? Was the contentment you felt due to the presence of other people? Who were they? Think about when you were proud of yourself and why you felt that pride. Your own experiences can help you identify what you really consider important. There is no set limit for how many values you can have but allow yourself to list as much as possible. Look at your values every day Once you determine what your values are, it is vital to look at them every day. We all face challenging situations and decisions and, as Sam Whittaker says: “All people are put into difficult situations from time to time ... situations where the right thing to do is not obvious. Knowing which principles are most important to you in these situations will help you make better decisions. “

So, let your values be valuable to you. Everyone is in their own way, and no one can tell you what their core values are beside you. Do not be afraid to rework your list in the future! You are allowed to consciously change your values. Your core values are your current compass, but they are not your true self. Remember: your values should help in creating your best life and your most authentic self. You make the rules. Be patient with yourself and take the time to discover your core values. You will be amazed at the things you can accomplish! The Unconditional Love Of An Animal By Sergei Van Bellinghen

It is an incredible feeling to play with a dog, cuddle with a cat, ride a horse or bond with a bird. Even watching a video about a wild animal getting her young out of a sticky situation touches us. So, animals have an extraordinary healing power that goes beyond what we can imagine.

Omtimes.com

Let’s Care More Most of you know the love an animal can have. You know the feeling. It is the touch of a wet nose rubbing your face or the sound of a concerned whimper when you are sad. Or it is also the jump on your laps or the absolute happiness when they see you. But it is even more profound when you look into their wide and compassionate eyes. They then seem to understand you on the deepest level. So, if you are an animal lover, you already know it to be true. Animals are capable of deep, unconditional love that is way beyond what you and I can feel. Yet, there is a cliché linked to pets waiting for adoption in shelters across the world. It looks, for many of you, that you believe an animal in a shelter is there just because it is undesirable or broken in some way. But nothing is further from the truth. It is a fact that only

five out of every ten animals in shelters never leave alive. In my life, I saw animals that were so starved, so thin, so abused, so neglected. Those are the ones who have seen the absolute worst of humanity. And yet somehow, they find the strength to live; not only to live but to forgive, trust and give unconditional love once again. The Unconditional Love of an Animal “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress is judged by the way its animals are treated.” - Mahatma Gandhi Some scientific studies show that animals feel the love in the same way people do; through a chemical process. When you hold an animal, like your pet, your cat, dog, horse and many other creatures of the animal kingdom, something magical happens. It releases the same hormones that you do when you are in love.

Omtimes.com

As a result, there is really no love like the unconditional love of an animal. They do not have to do it, yet they still do. Animals know that you are unique to them and very often, you are their whole world. So be always kind! The Magic of Loving an Animal I do love all animals. They are beautiful creatures that deserve their place in this world. And I realized that loving an animal changes a person’s life as well as mine. Whether they are an army, service, therapy, farm, wild animal, or just your pet, the love you have for them is unique. But the extraordinary love you receive back is one of the purest feelings on this planet. The Motives of Unconditional Love Surely, you heard a wolf howl longing to the moon, but do you know why? Wolves cry out from sorrow when they

Omtimes.com

miss an absent member of their pack. Some dogs will not leave the side of their owner’s grave. Did you ever see your pet yawn also when you do? Well, it is meant to be a sign of adoration for you, its owner. And what is it when your cat relaxes lazily in a sunny spot of the house, makes eye contact with you across the room and then blinks gently? In cat body language, a slow, deliberate blink means an expression of total trust, vulnerability, and friendliness. Otters hold hands while they sleep and rest, to prevent clans from losing each other. Rats have been known to free other rats from their cages. Elephants also possess unconditional love. They are emotional creatures and show compelling acts of affection when, for example, grieving for a lost loved one. Some even die of broken hearts after the death of another. These gentle souls stand over the remains, weeping for

several minutes to numerous days. They will also go so far as to bury the bodies under leaves. And those are not the only animals that show incredible feelings and cleverness. The Human and Animal Worlds The separation between the human and animal worlds is not as extensive as you might think. Animals hold such wisdom and power. And when we interact with them, they often sooth our pain and problems that we feel are all too overwhelming. Therefore, the most magical aspect of your human-animal connection is this unspoken language that you share with them. It fosters trust and affection that never wavers or fades. Studies show that petting and spending time with an animal inevitably decreases the levels of stress running through your body. So, the more affection, care,

and attention that you give to an animal or pet, the more you receive a lot of devotion in response. As a result, there is nothing that equals the unconditional love of an animal. And I believe that we have a lot to learn from them. “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unweakened.- Anatole France Since they do give us unconditional love until the day that they die and even after, think to pet, talk and spoil animals with adoration as much as you can. Tell them how much you love them. Remember that their unreserved affection for you is a special bond of nature, even if you are soul mates of a different type!
