An interview with Mark Nepo by Justine Willis Toms, co-founder, and host of New Dimensions Radio Program
Mark Nepo Beloved as a poet, teacher, and storyteller, Mark has been called "one of the finest spiritual guides of our time," "a consummate storyteller," and "an eloquent spiritual teacher." His work is widely accessible and used by many and his books have been translated into more than twenty languages.
What is our true inheritance as part of the human family? How do we have an authentic and wholehearted life, and why is that important? How do we stay connected to the deeper purpose in our life if we rush through our days, and how do we stand above isolation and despair? We explore these and many other questions with Mark Nepo.

With over a million copies sold, Mark Nepo has moved and inspired readers and seekers all over the world with his #1 New York Times bestseller The Book of Awakening.
Mark Nepo is a poet, philosopher, and a most eloquent storyteller. In 2015 he was given a life achievement award by Age Nation, and in 2016 he was named by Watkins Mind Body Spirit magazine as one of the most spiritually influential living people. Mark was part of Oprah Winfrey's The Life You Want tour in 2014 and has appeared several times with Oprah on her Super Soul Sunday program. As a cancer survivor, Mark Nepo devotes his writing and teaching to the journey of inner transformation and the life of the relationship. He's the author of 15 audio learning projects and 22 published books including the #1 New York Times bestseller, The Book of Awakening: Having the Life, You Want By Being Present to the Life You Have; The Way Under The Way: The Place of True Meeting; Drinking from the River of Light: The Life of Expression and his new book, The Book of Soul: 52 Paths to Living What Matters. In our conversation, Mark and I discuss the challenges of negotiating the oftenconfounding experience of being human in these postmodern times. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: I'm just delighted to be here with you once again. I know that in all your books, including the newest, The Book of Soul, there is this current of working with how to be present in our lives, how to be wholehearted in our life. I'd like to know what wholehearted means to you. MARK NEPO: It's wonderful to be with you again. Let me start by affirming that what I offer are notes from living. I offer examples, not instructions. What I offer is the best that I've been able to figure out so far as I keep learning and growing.
OMTIMES
|APRIL B
In truth, part of the challenge for every human being, for every generation, and now, in our present incarnation, is that it's our turn to be fully actualized human beings. And this is a living paradox because the being in us is infinite, but the human aspect is very finite and limited. So, we are always like lightning in a bottle. We're always cracking and falling and getting up, and so we have this constant challenge of how to be wholehearted when the difficulties of life make us halfhearted. Now, we can't avoid being halfhearted, because we're human. Just like I can't stay awake 24 hours a day—I must sleep. I believe, and I am committed to wholeheartedness, but being human, I'm not going to be able to sustain it. For just as you can't keep your eyes open without blinking, part of our humanness is that we will blink.
Given all this, what does it mean to be wholehearted? Well, my experience here on Earth has been that when I can hold nothing back when I can feel what mine to feel is, and face what mine to face—including joy and tenderness and difficulty and pain is—then I am completely here. And when I'm completely here, however briefly, I become an open conduit. One of the rewards for being authentic, which to me means being thorough, is that we are given access to a moment of Oneness, of Eternity, of completeness, through which we can touch into all the other times that anyone's ever lived. In this way, when I am caring for you, and I'm truly present, I slip into a moment where I am now in the moment of everyone who ever cared for someone. So, by being completely thorough to what's before me, one act of love allows us to experience all love.
OMTIMES
By one act of compassion, we experience all compassion. If I don't run from my pain or your pain, then I trip into the truth of all pain, which, you can say, is overwhelming. I have enough of my pain. I don't want all the pain. Well, it's not that we carry all pain, it's that just as a net will distribute weight when I can access other people's feelings and the connection—and that's why a relationship is so important—
it doesn't burden us with those feelings. It distributes the intensity of them so that we can receive the meaning in them. Being wholehearted is being integral. Interestingly, the root of the word integrity means "to make whole." Now, we tend to think of integrity as I have a checklist of character traits or virtues that I believe in, and I want to try to live by them, so I do an inventory every week to see if I have lived up to this set of values. There's nothing wrong with this, but there's a deeper understanding of integrity, which goes beyond being considered a good person. For when I live by the values that I care about, I become integral. That is, I become whole, and the reward for being whole is not just good relationships; it's access to Oneness. I get to experience everything larger than me.
|APRIL B
JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: This reminds me of something that you write and speak about that has to do with what do I stand on, and what do I stand for? Can you speak to that more deeply? MARK NEPO: There's a chapter in The Book of Soul about standing on and standing for. This is a distinction that I felt I needed to consider deeply. And again, when I consider something deep enough, it opens something everyone has had to consider. So, it's worth sharing, not because of what I do with it, but the fact that we all have to deal with it. In our humanity, we are so reactive that we're quick to stand for something or against something. But the most important thing I have found is that before I can effectually stand for something, I need to know what I'm standing on. What is foundational? What is reliable? What are truths that will never go away? I may lose sight of them, especially when I am lost in a cloud of worry or fear or distortion or inflation or deflation, anxiety, despair, or grief. Then, where's my footing? Where do I find what's solid because from what's solid, I can see more clearly what I stand for?
Often, we push against each other as a substitute for knowing where solid ground is. A dear friend in my men's' group, David Addiss, taught me about a Portuguese indigenous tradition practiced in South America. It's an ancient instruction on how to deal with conflict called E dai. In Portuguese, E dai means" and so." An example of this is that you come to me with a struggle, and you don't know what to do. But you're at a point where you have a real decision to make. In this ritual, I will listen to you and I will ask Edai three times. The first E dai is in the largest sense. You will share your problem, saying, "I don't know what to do in my life. I don't know whether to stay where I am or move or leave this job or stay in this relationship."'
OMTIMES
And I will listen and say, "E dai?" Then you will explore where you stand in this matter, and what this means in the context of all life, in the context of everything. I won't tell you what to do so that you can surface your wisdom. Then the second E dai is to explore where you're standing, so you can discern where the next spot of solid ground is. This is a diagnostic E dai. Is solid ground over there? Is it across the room? Is it across the state? Is it in being with a friend? Where is the next position of solid ground? And the third E dai is very specific. It is, okay, what's your next step? This is a beautiful indigenous ritual, and it offers a compelling way to actualize this notion of what we are standing on before we decide what we are standing for.

JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: You know, Mark, it's always been my way, for the last forty or fifty years, to look for the biggest truth I can find that is foundational and so I'm constantly looking, researching, or insearching as you would say, for that place. One of the things that you mention in your book is something about the choice we each have to either be present or absent. That's a choice we have to make over and over, which may refer to that deep foundational piece that holds us. We either choose to be present and live with presence or live with absence. I'd love for you to comment on that. MARK NEPO: Sure. In my experience, we all struggle with this. We all have to choose whether to be visible or invisible. Sometimes we do it unconsciously. Or pain or fear will make us invisible. I think this is very important right now in the times we're living in. We have very little control ultimately over what happens in life, and I think one of the few things we can control is our presence or our absence.
When I can be present, then all other things start to flow because when I'm present, I see differently, I hear differently, I know differently. And that gives me different choices and different tools and different resources. When I'm absent, I'm often absent out of fear. You know, we're at a party, I'm just meeting you, and you turn out to be someone who's very biting and sarcastic. And my first instinct is, "Well, I'm not playing." This happened to me years ago, which helped me make this distinction. I thought that I was removing myself from the situation when I was vanishing. There's a big difference. Removing yourself from a hurtful situation or a dangerous situation is like moving yourself back beyond the reach of the leash of a vicious dog. This remedy is simple. You are not hiding but taking who you are elsewhere. But there's an important difference between making our self inaccessible to cruelty or harshness or danger and hiding. Because hiding limits us. Hiding leaves, us at an even greater disadvantage. For when we hide, we are empowering what we are afraid of so much that we cut off our direct connection to the life around us. We eventually need to go back to tie these things together, so we can return to what we stand on. And only when we are clear on what we stand on can, we see what's possible and what's available. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: I'm wondering if a form of retaliation can also be a form of hiding. Like the person you described who was sarcastic and mean-spirited. Sometimes we withdraw or sometimes we engage. I'm reminded of hearing a man years ago talk at a conference. I remember when someone asked him a question, he severely put that person down.
He just slammed that person about how stupid their question was. Later, he realized that his response was about himself and his inability to share at that moment truly. MARK NEPO: Oh, absolutely. When we're vulnerable and don't have a sense of foundation, it's easy to become afraid that we won't be accepted for who we are. So, sometimes, we lash out before someone can get to us.
We think I'll get to them first. I'll make a lot of noise. I'll make a storm of distraction. This seems to be how Donald Trump's personality works. And this is why it's so important to find solid ground. For the more that we are standing on what is true, the more we can listen, the more we can care. There's a great paradox about the self. We all must have a self to be here. For the self is the direct way that I experience life. Not through you, not through my parents, not through what someone tells me, but how I directly experience life. Yet if all I'm left with is me, oh, brother! Life paradoxically is so much more than just me or you, and this is why we need each other. One of the purposes of having a strong central sense of self is so that I can receive all that I am not. Because together we are complete, and so there is this paradox that the more I can be who I am, the more I am open to all that I am not. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: You often talk about the inner teacher and say that inner work is not a refuge, rather more like taking time out to see more deeply. You have used whales and dolphins as metaphors for this.
MARK NEPO: Yes, whales and dolphins are great teachers for us. We often take them for granted. These great mammoth beings are air-breathing creatures that live in water. And because they're so big and mammoth, they can hold their breath for a long time. On the one hand, they have to be in the deep. Their bodies have to literally be immersed in water and depth so that they can stay vital. If they stay out of water too long, they'll die. On the other hand, they can't stay in the deep too long because they have to breach the surface to breathe. So, the question isn't whether you will spend time in the deep or the world. Like whales and dolphins, we all dive into the deep, and then we rise to be in the world, over and over, again and again. The question is one of personal spiritual knowledge: How do you determine what your rhythm is? Are you spending too much time in the deep or too much time in the world? What do you do to balance your life? OMTIMES
It's not that things don't need to be tended to in the world, but if we're only living in the circumstances, the tangle of relationships, the practical needs, we won't have the depth to keep us vital. And therefore, our eyes dry out, our tongue dries out, our ears dry out and we no longer have access to all the best choices. So, we have to go back into the deep, whatever that means for each of us. But we can't hide there either. As much as you would want to stay indepth, as much as you might love the depth, you'll drown if you stay because you partake of the deep, you are not deep. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: There's a story in The Book of Soul about a Japanese dog, and when I read it, I just burst into tears. MARK NEPO: Yes, HachikĹ? is an illustration of incredible devotion, thoroughness, and the wholeheartedness that we often learn from animals. |APRIL B

OMTIMES | APRIL B 2020
Because we are both simplistic and complicated, our complication often keeps us from our true nature, and animals remind us of our true nature. Hachikō was an Akita dog who lived in the 1930s with a professor in Tokyo. Hachikō would come and meet him at the Shibuya rail station every day on his way home. But one day, the professor had a brain hemorrhage, and he died. So, of course, he didn't show up. Yet Hachikō went to the station and waited, every day, for nine years, for the rest of his life. He became the communal dog of Tokyo and everyone around that station would leave food for him. Finally, one day Hachikō died right on the spot where he always waited for the professor. The people of Tokyo created a statue of Hachikō on that very spot where he waited all those years. Now everyone pets the statue, and there's a patina from where everyone keeps petting Hachikō. This story is told as an example of great love and affection. I included it in the new book because this is isn't just a moral character that we can check off. Hachikō lived the fullest life possible because he held nothing back— that's why I put it there. I have an old friend, one of my very first publishers, a Native American elder, Joseph Bruchac, a great storyteller himself. I noticed that so many Native American stories involve animals. When I asked him about this, he said, "Well, it's because the Great Spirit knew the wisdom of animals. And since human beings are the only creatures who forget their original instructions, animals remind us to live a full life by holding nothing back." The reward for our belief in life—not belief in a doctrine, not in a principle, not in a deity—is to believe in life the way Hachikō believed by holding nothing back because that's what a dog does. Well, that's also what a human does, what a soul in a body on Earth does.
OMTIMES | APRIL B 2020
Unless we cloud ourselves from knowing what we're standing on, from knowing what is true and foundational. But when we can be thorough and hold nothing back, the reward is that we are as alive as we can possibly be. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: This offers so much optimism in this challenging time when the news manipulates us to be in that fearful place. I believe the Dalai Lama said that as long as we continue to be kind and keep our distance from heartless actions, then we're okay because these dispassionate responses are not part of our true nature. That's kind of what you're saying, isn't it? MARK NEPO: I feel that through Trumpism and everything that's happening globally, there is this stridency, this return to fear and isolation. This has happened before in history. I note this, not to minimize what's happening now. It's very painful, and it's very difficult, it's maddening. But now, it's our turn not to vanish. It's our turn to show up like Hachikō at whatever station we're called to again and again and again. It's our job to save each other from falling in the well. It's our turn to surmount heartlessness, in ourselves and in others.
And the reward isn't just altruism, and the reward is that we get to inhabit the fullest life possible by giving of ourselves. I've come to learn that there's a certain aspect of coming alive that happens when I give, especially when I think I don't have any more to give. Profoundly and mysteriously, it's incredible that the heart is breakable, and paradoxically it's unbreakable. It will break, but it will always reform. It will break, and it will always get bigger, larger, gentler, more loving, and it will incorporate more before it becomes whole again. JUSTINE WILLIS TOMS: That's beautiful. Thank you for leaving us with that thought because it's so encouraging in these times. Thank you so much, Mark, for being with us today. MARK NEPO: Oh, a joy. A joy.
P. S. from Justine Willis Toms: I wanted to close my time with Mark by asking him to share with us a favorite quote of his and tell us how it inspires him. MARK NEPO: I love this quote from the great Persian poet Rumi: "Weep and then smile, don't pretend to know something you haven't experienced." I love this because of the sheer authenticity of it that it permits us and encourages us that who we are is more than enough, and that we don't have to pretend to be anything.

When you look at the view of Earth from space, you are immediately in awe of what you do see: the incredible beauty of Creation. It is not until you look closer that you realize what you do not see. You do not see lines partitioning countries. You do not see separation between races. You do not see division between religions. You do not see the walls people build to isolate themselves from each other. There is only One Planet. There is only One Humanity. This section is dedicated to introducing thoughts and ideas to foster a greater understanding of Humanity’s interdependence.

THE TRUTH COMING OUT OF HER WELL Art Of Jean-Léon Gérôme
In a time of universal deceit - telling the Truth is a revolutionary act.v George Orwell The Painting "The Truth Coming Out of Her Well" 1896 is a creation from the French artist, painter, and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. He was considered one of the most relevant painters from this academic period, bringing the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax.

Beginning in the mid-1890s, in the last decade of his life, Gérôme made at least four paintings personifying Truth as a nude woman, either thrown into, at the bottom of or emerging from a well. The imagery was inspired by an aphorism of the philosopher Democritus, "Of truth we know nothing, for truth is in a well." Truth Coming Out of Her Well, Armed with Her Whip to Chastise Mankind was exhibited in the Salon du Champ de Mars of 1896.
Naked Truth WISDOM TALES
It has been assumed that the painting was a comment on the Dreyfus affair. Still, art historian Bernard Tillier argues that Gérôme's images of Truth and the Well were part of his ongoing diatribe against Impressionism.
Gérôme himself invoked the metaphor of Truth and the Well in a preface he wrote for Émile Bayard's Le Nu Esthétique, published in 1902, to characterize the profound and irreversible influence of photography. [Wikipedia] It is said to be the portrait Imagery of a contemporary parable. It was a beautiful day, and The Truth and the Lie met by coincidence, and the Lie complimented the Truth and said:

They started to walk about together, admiring the big clouds and commenting on how the colors around Nature that were so pleasing and vivacious. They talked until they approached a well. The Lie put her hand on the water, and told the Truth: "This water is marvelous; how about enjoy this day, even more, bathing together on this lovely day?" The Truth was suspicious, but she tried the water herself, and in fact, she again realized that Lie was being honest. The pool was very inviting, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The two "women" took off their clothes and entered the Well, enjoying the sunshine and the refreshing feeling of the clear cold water.
But suddenly, as Truth appreciated her bath, Lie sneaked out the Well and dressed herself in the Truth's clothing and run away.
When Truth realized that Lie was no longer inside the Well with her, she got out of the well furious, and run after Lie to try getting her clothes back.
Truth is at the Bottom of the Well (1895) at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, another work by Gérôme using the metaphors of Truth, her mirror, and the well.
And that she was, the poor Truth was running nude through the streets, opening space between the people that tried to avoid looking at her because the Truth was exposed. The Truth felt the eyes of recrimination, hatred, and shame.
