The Timeless Wisdom of

SANSKRIT

Exclusive Interview Sarah Mane is a Sanskrit scholar with a particular interest in the wisdom of Sanskrit as a practical means to life-mastery.  Previously a teacher and school executive, today she is a transformational and executive coach. Sarah’s whole life has centred around studying, practicing and teaching higher consciousness and selfawareness. In 1971 at the age of ten, she began on her own spiritual journey.

BY OMTIMES She was also introduced to mantra meditation and other spiritual disciplines and techniques. By thirteen, she was studying Sanskrit and in her early twenties, she was teaching practical selfawareness, philosophy, meditation and Sanskrit to both children and adults.

OMTIMES: You call Sanskrit the language of the Universe can you explain what you mean? Sarah Mane: The word ‘sanskrita’ means ‘pure and perfectly formed.’ The knowledge and energy contained in Sanskrit are unchanged and therefore remain potent and pure. Sanskrit has the power to open the heart and connect us with universal Being and presence. The meaning of a Sanskrit word reflects how the universe works. For example, the word ‘smile’ in Sanskrit is ‘smitam.’ This means to ‘bloom, blossom and expand.’ We all know what it’s like to experience that expansive feeling when we receive a radiant smile from someone we love. SARAH MANE INTERVIEW

It is like a newly opened flower sharing its beauty and perfection with everyone. This is ‘smittam.’ this is Sanskrit. OMTIMES: You have been studying Sanskrit since you were a teenager what is it about this ancient language that you find so compelling, and what can we learn from it today how is it relevant? Sarah Mane: Sanskrit has everything. I love the musicality and beauty of the sound. Beyond this is the depth of knowledge and profound wisdom.’

The six parts of the Conscious Confidence F.U.S.E. program is practical and very powerful. They establish strong and true foundations within oneself. OMTIMES: What do you mean by the unchanging core of selfhood - how is this important for young people transitioning to adulthood? Sarah Mane: The wisdom traditions tell us that beyond the every-changing physical, mental, and emotional states, and even beyond the egoic sense of an individual,

there is a deeper and unchanging conscious Self. This Self is the source of knowledge and wisdom and is ever-present. It is ever available and can be directly experienced through meditation, presence and pure self-awareness. The F.U.S.E. program is a simple and effective means of establishing a lasting connection to this Self, to who you really are. For young people transitioning to adulthood, the standard-issue is this need to discover who they really are. This discovery has the potential to form a sure and certain foundation for their life. Nowadays, young people seem to lack basic guidance on how to discover this fundamental truth about themselves. This program gives guidance. Â OMTIMES: What do you hope the readers of your book will take away from it? Â Sarah Mane: I hope that they will take away clarity, certainty, and a joyous realization that finally, they have the power to take charge of their own destiny.

A Noninvasive Treatments for OCD By Carrie Rutledge

January 2020 A

T

here is no cure for OCD or Intrusive thoughts. In fact, OCD is the least understood mental illness today and one of the top ten most disabling worldwide conditions, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In terms of treating OCD with psychotropic drugs and CBT therapy, most individuals will only experience mild improvements. Those of us who suffer from OCD have spent years trying to understand and control our thoughts. These thoughts make us feel like we are spiraling out of control and can send us into the deepest of depression. We will try anything in an attempt to regain control of our minds, most of which fail miserably. Luckily, there are two newly studied noninvasive treatments available for those of us who have suffered from this lifelong daily battle. Kundalini meditation has shown to be the most effective treatment for OCD. The few studies that have been done with OCD patients, and this meditative technique have shown up to a 71% improvement rate in OCD symptoms. Some OCD sufferers claimed to have had their symptoms completely alleviated through this practice. The practice of Kundalini meditation for intrusive thoughts is very specific. It requires one to sit upright in a chair or cross-legged on the floor. Inhale hold the breath in, and exhale deeply to release. Being careful to only breathe through the nose and keep your eyes closed as if you are looking through your third eye or a central point on the horizon. Use your right thumb tip to cover the right nostril while you rest your elbow along your body. You will keep your left nostril uncovered for the entire practice. It looks like this: Take a deep breath in through the left nostril and count to five, hold the breath in for five, let the breath out for five, and hold the breath

out for five. With practice, you will eventually work up to breathing in for 15, holding for 15, releasing for 15, and holding for 15. Begin with a practice of 11 minutes per day and gradually work up to 31 minutes. Yoga experts claim this meditative technique can completely alleviate all OCD symptoms after 90 days of daily practice (using the 15-second per breath phase). Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR is a newer form of psychotherapy that releases psychological stress and is largely used for

tappers that you hold in your hands. This is called bilateral stimulation. After the session, the subject may feel drained and irritable. It is important to plan sessions when you can relax or sleep afterward for this reason. Gradually, you will find that your distressing memories take less of a hold on your life, and the disturbance level decreases dramatically. Current studies are finding that the use of EMDR is extremely effective in the treatment of OCD. Patients are showing significant symptom reduction at the 4-6 month follow-up.

PTSD and trauma. Although scientists currently are unable to determine a cause for OCD, they have found that trauma and OCD commonly occur together. Many psychiatrists are beginning to find most OCD treatments remain unsuccessful if a patient’s past trauma has not been addressed. EMDR is a noninvasive, interactive treatment developed in the 1990s in which the patient is asked to retrieve difficult memories while the therapist directs the patient in a type of sensory input. During the treatment, you will briefly relive the traumatic experience while the therapist directs your eye movements or may use massage

As mentioned above, the WHO ranks OCD as one of the top ten most disruptive disabilities worldwide. It currently affects 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children. Most people with OCD, especially children, will suffer in silence out of fear, shame, and guilt. Fortunately, with new research and findings, our prognosis for helping people who struggle with OCD is more promising than ever before. Together in unison, EMDR and Kundalini meditation is showing the best outcomes for those who suffer from OCD. In fact, some lifelong sufferers are finding complete relief of their symptoms by using these techniques! For those of you who are continuing to suffer, it’s important to know that effective and affordable treatments are within reach. — Carrie experienced her first OCD symptom at the young age of 8 with a formal diagnosis at age 23. She has spent her life searching for an effective treatment to no avail. After the birth of her first child, she was forced to seek treatment to better care for her daughter. It is only now, through CBT, EMDR, and a daily Kundalini Yoga practice, Carrie is beginning to find relief from her symptoms. www.instagram.com/mackenzie711

I

was standing at the counter of a snack bar at a children’s zoo when a customer became quite nasty with the server. A part of his order had not been delivered correctly, and he made quite a stink. I recoiled, thinking, “What a mean, cruel person!” Minutes later, I was passing the deer enclosure, where I saw a man kneeling to pet a fawn, tenderly feeding the creature. “That man reminds me of St. Francis,” I thought. When the man turned his head, I was astonished to see it was the same fellow who had created the unpleasant scene at the snack bar.

Who was that man, really? Was he the angry, abusive one, or the gentle, saintly one? We might say that he was both. He had the propensity for both kindness and mean-spiritedness, each aspect bubbling forth in different situations. 2020 is the Year of Clear Vision. This year we will see things as we choose to see them, not as we have been taught, they are. We have been trained to use the fearful mind to gauge what is real. Yet all great spiritual masters have advised us not to judge. We tend to focus on one aspect of a person, usually a fault or limitation, and we box that person into a small identity. Yet judgment always backfires

January 2020 A

because there is far more to that person than the single dark aspect we are focusing on. If we were to see them at another time in another situation, we would see an entirely different, better person. When we hold a negative opinion of someone, we suffer because we have contracted our consciousness to the realm of the wrong, small, or missing. We further lose because, in a judgmental mindset, we become subject to our judgments about ourselves and those of others toward us. If you hold a penny in front of your eye and look toward the sun, the penny will block your vision, and you will miss seeing the huge star. How odd that a tiny object just an inch wide can obscure the physical energy source that feeds all living things! Likewise, every soul emits rays of spirit that bring us life when we look upon them. When we

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

release judgment, we expand our vision to receive the unlimited good that wants to bless us. It’s tempting to fall into agreement with judgments issued by others. When I was looking to purchase a property, a real estate agent named Tom told me, “Watch out for Jimmy N. He is a manipulative, unethical realtor.” In the wake of that warning, I avoided Jimmy N.; whenever I heard his name, my armor went up. Later I had to do a transaction with Jimmy, and I found him to be one of the kindest, most honest, and ethical people I have ever worked with. He was mature, wise, and did honorable charity and service work. Tom’s opinion of Jimmy was entirely erroneous, based on his judgment only. In retrospect, I was sorry I had adopted Tom’s opinion and unfairly judged Jimmy before I got to know him.

Earlier I stated that we embody both good and bad aspects. Yet ultimately, only the good about us is true. A Course in Miracles calls us to identify only with the attributes of God. Because God is loving, kind, generous, and forgiving, that is who we are at our essence. Our true nature is innocent; all else is a passing illusion. When we allow ourselves to get sucked into beliefs in smallness and evil, we suffer. Yet the pain that judgment engenders is not necessary. We can walk the high road and remain at peace. Of course, people do foolish, cruel, and evil things. But only because they have succumbed

to their own judgments and those cast upon them by others. Hurt people hurt people. It takes a victim to make a victim. Someone who recognizes his or her innocence would never be tempted to hurt another person. Hurtful acts are not calling for more judgment, which perpetuates the vicious cycle. They are “calls for love, which ends the vicious cycle. The intellectual faculty judges constantly. From an early age, we were taught to focus on differences, label everything, rank people and objects in order of desirability, and reject everyone and everything that does not get us what we want. What we

January 2020 A

really want runs far deeper than the judgments we hold. What we really want is inner peace. We will never find that peace by making wrong and pushing against. Instead, we can drop into deeper acceptance, compassion, release, respect, and support. Dale Carnegie advised, “Give that person a fine reputation to live up to.” This instruction serves not just the person you are praising but empowers you as you see and claim the best in that person. As that person becomes the best in them, you will become the best in yourself. Forgiveness is not simply a gift to the recipient.

Can Good Feng Shui Improve Self-Esteem? By Kartar Diamond

T

here are many different schools of Feng Shui. One of them is the Flying Star School (Xuan Kong Fei Xing). In that School, observations are made about a house or building, in part based on when the structure was built and what direction the structure is facing. There is also an assumption that people can be directly and profoundly influenced by their immediate surroundings. This time-tested ancient practice has proven to be a valued self-help practice for all kinds of human conditions. A Flying Star Chart can be superimposed over the exact floor plan to be reviewed and identify which areas of a house or building will have a predictable influence on occupants. The code system used is referred to as the flying stars, and these are numerical abbreviations for a magnetic field inside a space. There are nine stars, and each one has a multitude of meanings and associations. Some of those associations are directly or indirectly related to self-esteem because of the relationship scenarios or moods which they can produce or stimulate in occupants. Once you know how to calculate these stars, you will discover the astonishing accuracy in how they manifest in your own home or business location.

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

Green Adventures

• The 1 star is related to sexuality and addictions. • The 2 star is related to loneliness, sadness, or depression. • The 3 star is related to gossip and arguments. • The 4 star is related to socializing and romance. • The 5 star is related to arguments and obstacles. • The 6 star is related to power or power struggles. • The 7 star is related to deception, assault, or betrayal. • The 8 star is related to convictions, stubbornness, and happiness. • The 9 star is related to exposure, and it intensifies whatever another star it is paired with. These nine stars can and do represent many other things besides what I listed above. For example, the 9 Fire star is also symbolic of the eyes and heart. All the other stars are symbolic of different body areas and bodily functions, directions, family members, planets, elements, and more. But for the purposes of this article on self-esteem, I think you can see from the brief list above, that each of these nine stars most definitely relates to self-esteem directly and indirectly. The goal in Feng shui is to apply adjustments to the physical space, to enhance the inherently supportive energies and to diminish the inherently undermining influences. With the 2 stars, which

can undermine self-esteem, we could use the element METAL to weaken this negative influence. This refers to literal objects made of metal, in a room where we have identified the location of the 2 stars.

Shui practitioners will learn about the Five Element Theory and how these elements interact with each other. This is a system which pervades not just Feng Shui, but also Chinese astrology, Chinese medicine, and other disciplines rooted in Chinese metaphysics.

For the 8 stars, which can be symbolic of happiness, we may decide to add the FIRE element to that area, to further enhance the inherently good energy.

In the cycle of the Elements, earth strengthens the metal. Said differently, metal can reduce the power of the earth. The 2 stars are attached to the earth element. So, if the 2 stars can be related to melancholy, we want to weaken it as much as possible. And we can weaken it with the metal element. Metal is anything made of gold, silver, brass, bronze, copper, steel, or other metal combinations.

How do we know which element or object to use in a corrective way? As mentioned, the flying stars are representative of many things, including the Five Elements: water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. All classical Feng

In contrast, the 8 star is also representative of the earth element, but it presently has mostly positive

January 2020 A

connotations. Here we may want to enhance or activate the inherently good energy, which could promote self-esteem. Earth is strengthened by the fire element. This is a good example of how there is nothing good or bad about the earth element or any of the elements. How we judge these stars is based on their potential influence, which changes over long periods. We can either weaken or strengthen the earth element, depending on the outcome we want. Not everything which affects our self-esteem is related directly to these stars. Yin-Yang energies also influence our moods and world view. An example of an environment that is too yin is one that is dark, damp, or cold. In the extreme and chronically, the yin environment could contribute

to depression. That will take self-esteem down a notch or two, would you agree? Another indirect circumstance which can influence self-esteem includes anything related to finances and career. When things are not going well financially, this can undermine self-esteem, just as poor health and procrastination can drag down self-esteem too. Fortunately, Feng Shui can provide some relatively easy and affordable solutions to these potentially critical issues. — Feng Shui Solutions Ž From the Health Matters and Relationships of All Kinds Series

The Practice of Acceptance By Judi Lynch

We have the power of acceptance to help us improve every facet of our lives if we are willing to listen, learn, and grow. Many people believe accepting something means that we endorse or condone certain situations

or actions. In truth, acceptance means we are acknowledging the way things are and that we are not living in denial. When we let in the truth, we are better prepared to make changes and adjustments to our futures. Instead of remaining stuck and resisting action, we make way for new thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Practicing acceptance toward people, new ideas, life paths, and challenges help us to evolve into more thoughtful and mature people. We never have to accept our past selves as our future selves when we can evolve and accept new adventures in our

January 2020 A

lives. In these actions, we realize that embracing a situation does not define the end result. We still have choices. Acceptance also means to love and honor ourselves for our flaws as well as our talents. To accept our past mistakes and to have gratitude for what we’ve learned. We learn to accept that we are not perfect but fabulously interesting if we choose to be. What we thought we wanted to be or do in life becomes something else entirely if we remember to dream and create. We also have to accept our gifts and attributes to share them with others. The fear of rejection is usually greater than the actual rejection itself. If we know we intend to succeed and thrive, accepting defeat sometimes is also part of the deal. It allows us the grace to move forward, many times with newly improved insight and skills. Criticism can be a great tool for greatness as it reminds us, we are still learning and striving to do better. We know not everyone is going to accept us as we are. That’s okay! Accepting others who are different and those who have conflicting opinions can become unbearable if we sense injustice or dishonesty. This is when we test ourselves to act with integrity and intelligence instead of fear and revenge. We have to accept some very difficult truths about human behavior, but we don’t have to condone their actions. We do have the power to search for the lesson in the challenge and find ways to make it better. Accepting big changes in our personal lives, when it is out of our control or unexpected, can put us into anxiety mode. Many of us are reluctant to ask for help or to seem vulnerable unless we

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

Green Adventures

admit our needs; we cannot get started. Sharing our challenges with others also means we have to accept things are not going so well. This is difficult for those who are self-sufficient and who has always taken care of themselves and their surroundings. If we find it challenging to receive help and guidance, resisting good advice, we can miss out on priceless connections in our lives. Those connections may have been put there for us to recognize and nurture to bring more positivity and joy to life. Acceptance brings us different degrees of decisions and choices. Knowing when to let go, knowing when to make other plans, knowing when to stay and ride out the storm. Sometimes the answers won’t be as clear as our inner knowing in the past, and we have to trust providence. We have to accept we really weren’t meant to know it all, to have the answers to every question. As human beings, we were meant to learn that change is inevitable. When we accept, we evolve. Change that truly matters here and now. We can collectively thrive through positive thought that combines tradition with our constant evolution. We have the power of acceptance to help us improve every facet of our lives if we are willing to listen, learn, and grow. — Judi Lynch is a psychic medium, intuitive counselor, healing channel and author. Setting An Intention Of Positivity

January 2020 A

An accident on the highway that causes a traffic jam. Spilling coffee on your shirt as you walk into the office. A long line at the grocery store. A surprise bill in the mail. Most would look at these events and write off the whole day as bad. Nothing went our way, everything went wrong. In this state of mind, we miss all of the things that did go right. And realistically, even statistically, the things that did go right vastly outweigh a couple of things that didn’t. Our external world impacts us so much. A handful of events occur that we label as “bad,” and suddenly, everything is bad. We see our life as the amalgamation of all the things we’ve done wrong instead of what it actually is: a projection of our current negative thoughts.

T

he power of intention comes down to understanding the power of our thoughts. Our thoughts become things. And they affect us and only us. The angry, hateful thoughts you harbor toward someone else hurt you. The resentment you carry only harms you. The negative beliefs you call “practical” are anything but, and the more time you spend thinking about things that make you sad, mad, depressed, or stressed is the time you could be living. And, as science suggests, living longer. This is why setting an intention of positivity is essential.

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

Green Adventures

Nothing impacts us more than our own thoughts. The biggest challenge isn’t what happens but rather how we feel and respond to what happens. For instance, getting into a minor accident is an unfortunate event but can be viewed and experienced in vastly different ways based on how we think about it. Will we think of everything we did wrong, how much money it will cost, and what headache dealing with insurance will be? Or will we think about how lucky we are to be safe, that no one was hurt, and that we have the resources to be able to deal with this kind of mistake? Our thoughts alone completely determine how we experience something. The quality of our thoughts, negative or positive, have measurable impacts on our thinking, health, and emotional state. Therefore, if you want your life to look different, you have to think different. It’s very simple; when

we are thinking positive thoughts, we feel good. And when we feel good, we do good. That traffic jam becomes an opportunity to listen to one more chapter of that audiobook. Sing along loudly to the radio. That coffee spill results in sharing a laugh with a co-worker. That long line at the grocery store leads to a chat with someone who just so happens to be listening to the same audiobook.

start to feel stuck, depressed, and resentful. With consciousness, however, we choose our thoughts. When we set an intention to see the good in everything that happens to us, everything that happens to us is good.

Like attracts like. Positivity attracts positivity, negativity creates more negativity. And a bad day can turn into a bad week, which can turn into a bad month. Without consciousness, our habitual negative thinking creates a pattern. Suddenly we

The first is to call them out. If we catch thoughts like, “I always forget everything,” “Nothing ever works out for me,” or “I always make a mess of things,” we can shift them. It’s so easy to hyperbolize, catastrophize, and overgeneralize

While this sounds simple, it isn’t. It’s good to have a few tools on hand for when we get caught in a tangle of negative thoughts.

when we’re feeling down. Objectively, it’s not possible for any of those statements to be true. Noticing the thought for what it is—negative self-talk—helps us turn it around. Instead of identifying with these limiting thoughts, label them for what they are, ridiculous and false. Then replace the thought with one of gratitude or identify an opposite thought, such as, “I always do my best, and my projects turn out to be purposeful.” Next, we can fake it until we make it. Pretending to be positive until we actually feel positive can help us get over the initial hump of negative thinking. Many of life’s difficulties come down to mind over matter. Our brains are powerful organs, but they can be easily duped. When we act positively, our brains follow suit and start to think positively. We don’t have to pretend for long until we are actually thinking positive thoughts. And lastly, stay present. Bringing attention back to the here and now can keep our thoughts from roaming into negative territory. The moment a negative thought arises, or fear begins to pull our focus away, we can notice where we are. Focusing on the negative almost always puts our attention on the past or the future. Instead, we can bring ourselves back into our bodies, notice the beauty around us, play an uplifting song, or just take a few deep breaths. It’s entirely natural to have emotional ups and downs in life and setting an intention of positivity doesn’t mean we ignore what’s happening around us. We are human, after all. It’s more about realizing that “the downs” are opportunities to learn and grow. Where we focus our consciousness is what we expand. While sadness, anger, frustration, and fear are all a part

of life, they don’t need to dictate our lives. Do You Have a Psychically Sensitive Child? By John Holland

I’ve become fascinated by the ever-increasing number of children who are displaying amazing psychic abilities. I’ve noticed over the past few years how many more questions I’m getting at my lectures, during my radio show and on my Facebook page about psychically sensitive children. Young intuitive children see the world and people as they truly are. They show their sensitivity in such simple ways. For example, if your child encounters someone new and it appears as though they don’t like that person, then I’d suggest that first and foremost, you take a moment to listen to your child. Your child is probably able to see clairvoyantly, or they’re feeling the colors emanating from the person’s aura. They could also be picking up the energy of the person, and they interpret it

January 2020 A

as something they’re not comfortable with. The important thing is that you’re totally supportive, and you talk to your child about what they’re feeling. How can these abilities or spiritual gifts be understood and developed? Rather than look to your child for answers, we must first look within our attitudes, thoughts, and feelings. Parents and teachers have to realize that being intuitive or psychic is normal. There are too many misconceptions. The word psychic comes from the Greek word psychos, meaning “of the soul.” What this means is that as spiritual beings, we can access, receive and transmit information that reaches beyond our physical body and our natural five senses.

5. He is highly sympathetic to others—especially other children. 6. Feels more deeply about things than most kids. 7. It seems to sense what others are feeling. 8. Prefers quiet play or being on their own. 9. It doesn’t do well with sudden changes. 10. It seems to have an active inner life. 11. Often asks deep, thought-provoking questions. 12. Dreams of flying. 13. Often talks about being out of their body and viewing things from above. 14. Experiences highly vivid dreams that quite often come true. 15. Has the ability to communicate with animals and nature. 16. Communicates with angels. 17. Sees faces while trying to go to sleep. 18. It is highly artistic or creative.

Most children are quite intuitive or psychic until the age of seven. If you want to see a soul in action, watch a child as they enjoy their early years without a care in the world. It’s as if they have one foot here and one foot still in heaven. In reality, they’re living their life through the creative, intuitive right-hand side of the brain—a place of imagination, creativity, magic, and wonder.

I dedicated a whole chapter in my book ‘ The Spirit Whisperer’ that helps parents and teachers understand sensitive and psychic children. Here are a few more tips I would suggest:

Here are 18 typical signs of a sensitive psychic child. Do any of these fit your child? If they do, then you could well have a son or daughter who needs your care and special attention.

1. 2. 3. 4.

If you have more questions about your psychically sensitive child, please ask me in the comments section on my Facebook page or, you can always phone into my Spirit Connections radio show.

Startles easily. It does not react well to surprises. It seems to know what others are thinking. Feels overwhelmed or agitated in noisy environments.

A NOT SO SUBTLE INTRODUCTION TO SELF-AWARENESS BY NAOMI MCDONALD

"Philosophers have sought to understand our innate nature from the time of Plato and before. These inner tendencies can be our guides if we learn to listen. Driving each of our personalities, our desires, our places of comfort are original innate patterns of behavior. Identifying these subconscious patterns or templates helps us navigate our own circumstances and be more understanding of others.

OMTIMES.COM

From the earliest times, philosophers have used the idea of universal personality forms— sometimes referred to as archetypes—to describe and understand how humans interact with the world and with each other. Plato introduced the idea that when a person did not engage properly with one’s original forms, mistakes were inevitable. The Western Mystery Tradition, Qabalah, identified these forms in levels of the Tree of Life known as archetypes. These archetypes became the twenty-two major arcana of the Tarot.

Italian cuisine is noted for its regional diversity, abundance of difference in taste, and is one of the most popular in the world, with influences abroad. Italian cuisine is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only four to eight ingredients. Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. Ingredients and dishes vary by region and by country as well. Many dishes that were once regional, however, have proliferated with variations throughout the country. Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine, with many variations and Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) (regulated appellation) laws. Coffee, specifically espresso, has become important in Italian cuisine.

OMTIMES.COM

Later, Swiss psychologist Carl Jung described the universal archetypes in human personality present in all of us.

JAN A 2020

His teachings form the basis for many current modes of psychological healing and recovery. Archetypes have much to teach us about our true selves. When we resonate or are in harmony with these innate patterns of behavior, the result can be a fulfilling, purposeful life. When we ignore or misunderstand our archetypes, imbalances can manifest in our health, finances, relationships, or professions. If you’re confused about archetypes, you’re not alone. My new autobiographical book, Away to Me, My Love: A Sheepdog’s Tale of Two Lives, describes how my entering the fascinating world of sheepherding with my dog, Luke, became the gateway to discovering and embracing my own archetypes. The following excerpt from my book describes my first experience with the idea. After months of frustration working with my seemingly untrainable Border Collie, I had arrived at my first sheepherding event drowning in selfdoubt. By the end of the event, those feelings had only compounded. In the scene, a new friend at the clinic, Chris, helps me deal with my overwhelming feelings of confusion and inadequacy. Instead of engaging with my obvious emotional state, he explains what archetypes are and how they apply to my situation.

|OMTIMES

I felt tears rising but blinked them back. I would not cry. I would not. “I don’t know what the heck I’m doing here. Right now, I’m so out of my element and confused, I don’t know which way is up. I couldn’t make a competent decision about which socks to wear if I had to.” I blew out a huff of breath, then wondered why Chris was looking intently at my truck. He smiled, a warm understanding in his eyes. “I don’t know many women who drive a one-ton diesel dually around. You said you trained horses for a living. What kind of horse trailer do you pull?” “A white aluminum four-horse gooseneck.” This man was driving me crazy with questions. For the measure of a few heartbeats, I didn’t care if he saw the irritated expression cross my face. He just smiled again. “Horses can be around eleven hundred pounds, so you are handling huge animals every day. Your rig is the size of many commercial carriers. You have a western profession mostly occupied by men. Yet”—Chris held up a finger—“your dogs were bathed before you came, and both had matching collars and leashes. I would say you’re suffering from Queen/Cowboy/Artist-archetype syndrome.” He leaned back, crossed his muscled arms behind his head, and took on a self-satisfied look that said, “I hit the nail on the head.” “An arka-what syndrome? What are you talking about?” “My wife and I were both practicing psychologists for several years before I became a rancher. One of my heroes is Carl Jung. His theories of archetypes helped me understand my patients on so many levels.” JAN A 2020

“But you didn’t tell me what an arka-whatever is.” “An archetype is an inherited unconscious pattern of thought.” “How does that relate to queens and cowboys?” “There are primary archetypes—king, queen, princess, prostitute, child, victim, nurturer, rescuer, hero, teacher. The list goes on. You’re a queen and a shepherd combined. There must be a dose of a teacher in your psyche too. These subconscious patterns can influence every decision we make.” Chris’s eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled.

OMTIMES/ JANUARY 2020

OMTIMES/ JANUARY 2020 “The Queen/Shepherd in you feeds on authority and leadership—your kingdom must be protected, directed, and nurtured. The artist wants it all beautiful. The horses are your throne, and the cowboy wears spurs. Here”—he waved his hands out wide to encompass the dog clinic— “you’re unsure of yourself and your abilities. I would say you haven’t felt that way in a long, long time.” Chris had just shown me that it wasn’t a lack of ability or preparedness that was causing my confusion and alarm. Being driven by my inner Queen to be in control simply was not possible in this situation. My emerging shepherd quaked in her tennis shoes at the thought of failing. The awareness of these subconscious driving forces allowed me to control my own behavior instead of them controlling me. This not so subtle introduction to archetypes pulled me from a self-sabotaging state of emotion (that Plato would call not engaging properly) to a place of self-awareness. For those who may not have a psychologistturned-rancher to introduce the concept, we can identify our personal innate patterns by reading a Tarot spread, taking an archetype course, or joining a like-minded group. The wholeness, empowerment, and freedom that result when one delves deeply into our subconscious patterns are like emerging from a long dark tunnel into daylight. We have a view of life we’ve never seen before.

The Art of Dimension Hopping By Jill Mattson

January 2020 A

M

odern science has finally caught up to what Ancient Shamans and Intuitives have known throughout time, acknowledging that there are many other dimensions surrounding us. Higher dimensions are all around us, some only inches from our touch. Most people cannot sense or reach alternate dimensions in their ordinary lives; however, it is possible to contact and even impact dimensions beyond our own.

get our “3-D” world. We also often add time as the fourth dimension because all the 3-D objects move and interact “in time.”

3-D Cube

2-D Plane

I have researched a lot of the cutting edge Physics material discussing the scientific, theoretical basis for the existence of higher dimensions. I believe the scientific case boils down to this: at the simplest level, scientists have found that it is necessary to postulate extra dimensions (as many as 12 or 13 total dimensions) to reconcile the math and make sense of the best current theories on the origin and nature of our universe. Said differently, after hundreds of years of experimentation and reflection by the best minds in history, we have arrived at a view of the universe that says there are far more dimensions than the three space and one time “D’s” that we all know.

It is an interesting exercise to contemplate the possibility of beings that might live in a lowerdimensional reality; it sheds light on how higher dimensional beings might think about us. A famous “2-D” universe is “Flatland,” an imaginary place where the inhabitants live on a sheet-ofpaper-like world. We could put our faces inches above the Flatland world, and the people living there would have no clue of our existence. It seems simple, right? Well that is exactly how our 3-D universe appears to a being that resides in a higher dimensional reality. Throughout time, Jesus, Buddha, and certain mystics and clairvoyants have been known to reach and achieve wonders by tapping into a higher dimensional realm.

In junior high science and geometry, we learned about the world’s dimensions and the theory behind them. The three space dimensions that we are familiar with can be referred to as length (L), width (W) and height (H). If you want to know the volume of a cube (think cardboard box) you multiply the length of one side, times the width of another side, times the height of the third side: Volume = L x W x H. Each of the linear dimensions is one “D” - a line is one-dimensional. Multiply two linear dimensions, and you get “2D”, or a plane (like a sheet of paper). When you multiply three linear dimensions, as above, you

I would argue that our “future selves” reside in a higher dimensional realm. You have probably heard that advanced beings vibrate at a higher frequency than we do; their elevated frequency makes us unable to detect them. The probability of higher dimensions, I believe, is just another way of explaining and the presence of a vast unseen world with divine beings that we know exist. All is vibration, and beings vibrating at a much higher frequency (pitch) than our own would remain imperceptible to us - analogous to how the frequency of a dog whistle is beyond the scope of human hearing and detection - but it is very real.

It is well documented that people skilled at meditation can attain powerful states of mind. While in these deep trance states, it is possible to obtain energy and information from higher dimensions. Tapping into higher dimensions enables one to access answers to questions, divine insights, even work miracles. Edgar Cayce clearly reached into other dimensions to access the information that he shared so prolifically with the world. Energy can flow through dimensions in both directions. One can go to higher dimensions and retrieve information - just as Ancient Shaman did while in trance states for their tribes. One can also go to other dimensions and leave information. As an intuitive, frequently, I have experienced a very disturbing feeling, only later to clairvoyantly

see snippets of a past life (presumably going on now in another dimension), which was the root cause of my bad feelings. For example, drowned in a previous life? Chances are you are terrified of water next time around. There is bleed-through from one dimension to another. It benefits us in the now, to bless ourselves in the past, in the future, and in other dimensions. It is in the interest of the future, “higher dimensional you” to help with a current problem that you are struggling within today’s 3-D world. This makes me think that prayer energy creates a porthole to higher realms. When I pray, my energy reaches the future “me” and future loved ones, who can send back energy or guidance to help me in my current reality. Bless the past and future and all your family and friends (and not-so-much-friends) with forgiveness and gratitude.

defined as energy that straddles the physical and nonmaterial worlds. Subtle energy has never been directly measured by science, but intuitives and mystics can sense it easily and manipulate it to grand results. Subtle energy has an extremely high frequency and extremely small wavelength which is why we cannot detect it physically... perhaps like a ghost or an angel. The key point, for our purposes, is that music is vibrational, as is subtle energy. Clearly, these two forms of energy can comingle and alter each other through resonance and harmony. Hence we have a readily available tool that can work in the nonmaterial or Higher Dimensional Spheres! Our ticket for hopping dimensions.

Gathering energy from other dimensions is known as mediumship. What I am talking about could be called “reverse mediumship.” You can leave energy in higher dimensions that are beneficial (today and tomorrow) for yourself and others. The implications and potential benefits of this “dimension traveling” is staggering. Similar to meditation, music, or sound, is another modality that can help you reach a higher plane of reality or an other-dimensional world. Music has special properties that can interact with us physically and raise our consciousness. The musical frequencies enter our bodies, not just our ears; they alter our brainwaves – similar to skilled meditators. Although it is not entirely understood how music interacts with subtle energy. Subtle energy is best

As energy can cross dimensional boundaries, perhaps the emotional content of music goes through the dimensional levels as well. Once in a new dimension the music still conveys the same emotion and energy as it did in our world, possibly a way to speak to beings in other universes? The Ancients knew these things as they used sound and music in all spiritual aspects of their lives and as a conduit to other dimensions. — Jill Mattson - Artist, Musician, Author, Expert, Sound Healing composer! TV vs. Film Prediction A-list actors are continuing to take the money and run as they can no longer count on the major motion picture studios in Hollywood. I see the new trends were global commercials for Hollywood's biggest stars when this used to be considered career suicide. A larger number of A-list movie stars will turn to original movies and series for streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. And there will be less mega starring roles available for the old school Hollywood movie machine.

Charity - Adele involves herself primarily with the organization Drop4Drop, an organization dedicated to developing clean water solutions across the globe.

This makes Gwen very nervous I see their new motto is, “If it's not broke, don't try to fix it.” I'm sure sometime in the future, one of them will vocalize the sentiment.

Charity -Gwen Stefani received the Radio Disney Hero Award for her philanthropic work Blake Shelton wrote one massive check to a local children's hospital. The country star donated $600,000 to the Jimmy Everest Center, an Oklahoma University hospital for children with blood cancer and blood disorders

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks is a humanitarian and does charity without a lot of notoriety.

For work- I predict Stevie will do many collaborative duets in the coming years with a diverse group of artists.

She likes different genres, and the new sound of her voice resonating with other fine musicians. I bet Kid Rock will be collaborating with Stevie.

Currently, I see that Stevie is mentoring young singers; she was trying to save them from the road that she went down and nearly lost her career from her party lifestyle. Relationships Stevie thinks of herself as a confirmed bachelorette now.

Her work is her prime relationship, her lovers are secondary.

Charity - She founded the Stevie Nicks Soldier's Angel Foundation, intending to use music to help in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. She visits the hospitalized wounded soldiers, spends time with them, and gifts them with iPods that are filled with music.

The Royals I see that Kate has anxiety issues. She's very self-conscious, just like Diana. I even see another high-risk pregnancy in 2020 for

Prince Andrew Yes, he did indeed have consensual sex with the 17-year-old on more than one occasion, sadly he felt that Jeffrey Epstein was his friend.

Prince William Duke of Cambridge My previous prediction still stands; I see a dangerous helicopter accident in his energy.

William and Kate. This seems to be unplanned. Sadly Kate may even miscarry. Kate sets the bar high for herself to meet royal expectations. Currently, I see her fatigue and stress and even an eating disorder as she starves herself.

Prince Charles I hear the words, "he does not want to work." I see that he will not be the next king and his wife Camilla is fine with that. Because Camilla wants Charles to focus on her solely. He being king would take too much time away from their private life.

JANUARY 2020

Astrology Forecast

BY ELIZABETH JOYCE

Stargazing...

It is plain to see from all the crime, political upheaval, and judgment so prevalent now that numerous areas of human experience need to be healed on our planet. Many people are feeling restless and sense big changes are coming. Whatever you do, don’t allow yourself to get caught in the drama of what’s happening. Take a deep breath, observe what you see is unfolding, and then observe your own life and make whatever changes you feel are appropriate. Sometimes we can sense the warnings, and we see the symbols, but we cannot see the “exact” events. Be prepared, stay aligned and listen to your inner voice.

I see 2020 as a transition year — a “hinge” year — that will “open the door” to 2021-2026, and the events of the next 6 years will be some of the most significant and challenging of this Age of Humanity. How wide the “door” is open is continuously changing, depending on the free will choices every individual makes. In 2020 how much effort we put into bringing forth the very powerful energy of real love — love that comes with a genuine effort to bring forth kindness and mercy, forgiveness and understanding from within our self — will determine how far we can open the door which will lead to the New Age of Humanity.

We are close, yet the door will not fully open if humanity does not consciously bring it forth onto the planet. Great effort is needed. We all are an important part of these changes. We are all needed now. 2020 Starts with a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse and a 34 Year Rarity

The January 10th Full Moon in Cancer brings a Lunar Eclipse that is doubly powerful and special. Although this energy is traditionally a time when you bring projects to a successful and positive conclusion, the eclipse suggests that it’s best to wait until the following week to celebrate an event or sign any papers. On January 12, 2020, there is a difficult Saturn – Pluto conjunction that happens only once every 34 years. When this energy gets together, it can be warlike because it begins a slow evolutionary process that destroys old foundations and creates new ones through economic change, downtrends, hardship, and loss. The saving grace of this powerful conjunction is that Jupiter (the planet of luck), will be joining these two mischiefmakers, bringing you control, power, and success with focus and hard work. The best way to deal with it is to plan and build your house with bricks, not straw. Be prepared, use clear thinking and don’t allow yourself to drop into fear, then you’ll be able to face and handle anything the energies may throw your way. The January 24th New Moon in Aquarius brings a time when it’s important to break away from the old same ‘ole same ‘ole and create a new focus or lifestyle. We will have more of that in our next article for the Aquarius cycle.

Leo (7/23-8/22). January’s powerful conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn on the 12th, along with the Full Moon eclipse on the 10th require you to be tapped into your life and that vulnerability that allows you to grow, transmute and transform any facet of your life that has gone stale, deteriorated, or completely vanished. THE PERSONAL SIGNS JANUARY 2020

Virgo (8/23-9/22) January’s eclipse invites you to stop ignoring the hopes and wishes you so carefully keep hidden behind the hard work that you believe must be done before you have the right to follow your bliss—you’re so used to taking care of business that you aren’t really sure what that is. Between now and the June eclipse, the energies are telling you to recognize that you have created the proper foundation to build anything your heart desires. This month there is no relief in sight from the powerful intensity pushing you to break out of old patterns so you can live a life free from compulsive behavior and unrealistic expectations. At the same time, you can hang on to the structures you have built. It’s extremely difficult for you not to engage in analysis paralysis with no sufficient answers to your thoughts. You are overtaxing your mind in a stressful way. Libra (9/23-10/22). January and the Lunar Eclipse on the 10th are telling you that running away is futile, Libra. You are avoiding the internal reckoning bubble that is gurgling below the surface of your consciousness. The time has come! Are you going to do more than paying lip service to let go of what is toxic and unfulfilling in your life and actually let go? Sure, you’re overwhelmed, but you have the strength and awareness to rebirth yourself, just from the energies of your inner awareness. Face the fears that seem insurmountable—of course, they’re not—and the rewards that follow throughout this year will blow your mind!

OMTIMES | jANUARY A 2020

ASTROLOGY

Scorpio (10/ 23-11/22). January brings you the need to clean out your emotional dungeon. You may feel at the end of your rope. The New Year feels like just one cycle ending and the beginning of a new one. Remember this feeling, because it’s one you’ll encounter through most of 2020. You are finishing up this decade sorting and shifting through a bunch of leftover emotional material in preparation for your initiation into a fresh life perspective and a renewed sense of your own worth. Although you’ve purged many unhealthy emotions and thoughts, what will you do to replace them? The January 10th eclipse encourages you to form a new set of guiding principles that honors and respects all things you and your powerful nature. With this process complete, you are ready to apply your new sense of self to the next phase of your growth.

THE PERSONAL SIGNS JANUARY 2020

Sagittarius (11/23-12/21). January begins with you feeling a bit “off.” You’re not quite yourself because you’re not really sure of what’s going on. It seems as if you’re standing on ground that’s continually shifting. You’re right Sag! This has been going on for most of 2019. These intense changes haven’t been an easy process for you because being vulnerable and sensitive doesn’t come easy. The focus of this evolution—because you have grown and gained strength—is to allow you to become more integrated with the inner you. This continues through 2020 and a shift arrives in May. In the eighteen months that follow this shift, you will find yourself developing new pathways in being your SELF. Along the way, you will be finding old patterns you created in how you show up in the world and how you deal with people in your life. This is a natural process, not any bump in the road, and one that promises to revitalize you.

Capricorn (12/22-1/19). As January opens, you may feel as if your life is about to come to an end, Cap. It’s not but the inner pressure to make up your mind about where you want to go and what you truly want to do shows no signs of stopping. No, you don’t have to crawl out of your skin to alleviate what you are feeling. Just recognize that you are on the verge of a rebirth. To accomplish this, you must let go of anything rigid and limiting; you are being offered by the Universe to create a healthier and more nourishing emotional foundation. Too often you are likely to suppress the “feeling” side of your nature, because you’re not really sure of what this value is, especially in a world that sees emotions and feelings an inconvenience at best. No matter how hard you try to answer the questions demanding your attention, it’s simply not going to happen. The shift you’re going through is about honoring a new shift in your life that is emerging. Answers and solutions will come later.

ASTROLOGY

THE PERSONAL SIGNS JANUARY 2020

Aquarius (1/20-2/18). As of January, open, you are asking, “Hey, who turned out the lights? Seriously, who?” You’re pretty sure it wasn’t you. This energy highlights the inner examination of all things in your life related to how you feel about all aspects of your life. Right now, you likely feel very sensitive and emotional so much so that you can’t grasp what’s happening, and that can leave you speechless. How can you share this with anyone when you can’t put anything into words, much less a complete sentence? You begin 2020 with very clear goals in mind and enough mojo to fly into space. However, things don’t go quite as planned and you get sidetracked with a number of other possibilities. Don’t get frustrated with yourself. Recognize that you are forming your future. The time for you to manifest your goals isn’t that far away Pisces (2/19-3/20). January has you feeling that you’re headed for a brick wall at top speed. The wall is any carefully structured reality that needs to be torn down, and the speed is your desire just to do it and get it over with. You wish actually to transform your life instead of just dreaming about it. Old patterns surface in how other people treat you and it leaves you wondering if you are actually making any progress in changing your approach to life and your relationships. Remember throughout 2020 that this is a year of a work in progress. From Fractured to Whole: Individuation and the Ouroboros January 2020 A

I

n some ways, all of us are fractured, a collection of selves that can be at odds with each other. The dreamer self might wrestle with the practical self.

The self that strives to please others might be in competition with the self that resents the burden of having to conform to people’s expectations.

As you think about your own life, there may be selves you have denied. What are they? Maybe there’s a self that makes you feel ashamed or inadequate. If you were to stop denying its existence, you might be able to see that self differently and relate to it in a new way, seeing its positive aspects. You might reclaim the upsides to that self and start feeling less fractured.

When we come to peace with our many selves, accepting them rather than denying them, we can integrate them and feel less fractured and more whole. Carl Jung called this process individuation. We may never fully heal from all the traumas we’ve experienced that caused us to feel fractured. Even so, we can make progress toward individuation.

Like many people, I have a self that learned early on to compartmentalize my feelings. I repressed the part of me that was mythopoetic, that longed to feel my emotions without shame, that loved poetry and mythology and wanted to ask the big, unanswerable questions like where did we come from before we were born and where will we go after we die. I saw that self as impractical and inconvenient. It

was going to get in the way of my reaching my goals, so I pushed it aside. After many years, I finally stopped denying it and began exploring how it had helped me deal with the trauma and challenges I faced in my work. Now, I could be conscious of it and relate to it differently, which helped me stop compartmentalizing my emotions in my relationships—something that hadn’t been very positive. Reclaiming that self that had been split off helped me to live more authentically. I discovered new interests and even a new career as a Jungian analyst. It also led to me learning about shamanism and becoming a shamanic practitioner. Individuation has sometimes been depicted as an ouroboros, and as I was sitting at home thinking I might write something about individuation, I looked up and saw that a snake had climbed into space next to my window. As I pondered how it got there, I couldn’t help noticing that it looked like it was eating its tail: An ouroboros, a symbol of wholeness, had appeared synchronistically. Once, I would have thought, “That’s a strange coincidence…” and thought no more of it. However, because I not only am a Jungian analyst but have been in analysis myself, I recognized that synchronicities like these are worth appreciating and pondering. What’s more, my shamanic work has taught me that there are hidden connections among events past, present, and future. Sometimes, I wonder if we are standing at an intersection of all of these when synchronicities occur. I thought about all of this as I watched the snake in my window.

Maybe this snake arrived to remind me to recognize the value of every self, even those selves that we think are impractical or inconvenient. Maybe it arrived to say, “Keep writing. Keep sharing what you have learned as a healer working with people who took the journey of self-discovery, healing, and transformation. Do this so you can help others.” Maybe it climbed into the window space for no particular reason. I have learned not to take myself and my thoughts too seriously, so I admit, the snake’s sudden and symbolic appearance might just be a meaningless coincidence that I’ve projected meaning onto! Still, its arrival inspired me to write about going from fractured to a whole, the hero’s journey of individuation. As you think about any selves you have denied, imagine what you might feel if you were to reclaim them and their positive qualities. Maybe like the ouroboros, you are not just “chasing your tail” when you reflect on your past and on what you deny about yourself but are instead doing important work: striving to move from feeling fractured to feeling whole and healed. — Carl Greer, Ph.D., PsyD, is a practicing clinical psychologist, Jungian analyst, and shamanic practitioner. The Five Mental Habits Guaranteed to Bring You Real and Lasting Happiness By Marcia Sirota, MD. January 2020 A

W

e all want happiness, and we think that it’s so hard to come by, but really, it’s not. It’s just that we’ve been looking for it in all the wrong places. We think that we’ll be happier if we have more money, power, fame or influence. We think we’ll be happier if we’re richer, more attractive, or if we have nicer stuff. None of this is true. Of course, we need a certain amount of money to be secure, but it’s been proven that more money can’t bring us more happiness. Happiness doesn’t come from superficial or material things. It comes from a deep connection to others and from a sense of purpose and meaning in our lives. Happiness comes when we’re free of psychological suffering and addiction. Without these things, it doesn’t matter how fancy our house is or how Insta-famous we are. But if we understand that we’ve been going after happiness in all the wrong ways, how do we change directions so that happiness is possible? Looking around, loads of people are promoting “the way” to find happiness, but it seems like many of us are less and less happy. I think that this is because of two things — 1: A lot of those who are selling us happiness are selling us a scam; and 2: Happiness takes work, and not enough of us are willing to do the work. There is a real way to find happiness. No lie, no scam. It does require some work. But if you do the work, happiness is pretty much guaranteed. I’d call that a fair deal. These are the 5 mental habits guaranteed to transform your life and make you truly happy:

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

Green Adventures

1. Conscious Awareness I call it being fully present at the moment and sadly, it’s not that common. Many of us walk around in a state of denial or wishful thinking. We wish for things and then believe that our wishes are going to come true. That’s called magical thinking, and it’s dangerous because when we’re not grounded in reality, we have no power to take action and to make real changes in our relationships, our jobs, or our wellness. Being in denial takes away our power and leaves us passive and helpless. This is no way to be happy. We need to wake up and really see what’s going on inside us and around us. We have to stop telling ourselves that the pain in our chest is “nothing,” or that our partner’s abusive behavior is not that bad or that our boss isn’t an unreasonable micromanager. When we face the truth, we become empowered to deal with whatever is going on. When we live in denial, we can’t deal directly with problems, so we never gain confidence in our abilities to cope, and this makes it easier to stay in denial. On the other hand, the more we face the truth and deal with what’s going on, the more confident we become, and the easier it is to stay present.

2. Personal Responsibility Many of us like to blame others for our problems. We tell ourselves that it’s our partner’s fault when our relationship falls apart, or that our bad boss or undermining colleague made us lose our job. But this attitude makes it impossible for anything to get better.

When we blame external forces for our unhappiness, we aren’t able to improve our lives. On the other hand, when we take responsibility for the choices that we’ve been making, we have the chance to learn from our mistakes and to adjust our behavior accordingly. The more responsibility we take, the more empowered we are to fix the problems in our lives.

3. Self-Compassion To be aware and to take responsibility, we need selfcompassion. It can be painful to face the fact that we’ve chosen an abusive partner or that we’ve gotten into some bad habits with real-world consequences. We might feel a lot of guilt or shame for these choices. We might become anxious or depressed when facing the truth. The way to avoid feeling so bad is to practice self-compassion. This involves being gentle with

ourselves and not beating ourselves up for what we see, but rather, rewarding ourselves for seeing the truth because this is the first step to a happier life. Self-compassion also means forgiving ourselves for the bad choices we’ve made. Instead of rubbing our noses in these choices, we can be kind and understanding, and we can put into perspective the mistakes that we’ve made. This forgiveness allows us to see these mistakes with greater clarity so we can stop making them.

4. Mental Flexibility Fear is a big part of life, and one common response to fear is mental rigidity, in which we’re unable to shift our perspective or change our mind about things. Mental rigidity makes it impossible for us to change. If we can’t see that something might not be exactly the way we thought it was and then adjust

January 2020 A

our ideas of it, or if we can’t let go of an attitude or belief that isn’t serving us, we become trapped in a mental prison of our own making. Mental rigidity creates a lot of unnecessary unhappiness. With mental flexibility we’re free to change our ideas, attitudes, beliefs, habits, and relationships for the better.

5. Compassion for Others Some people think that being selfish and exploitative is the way to go because they’ve “got to look out for number one.” Some people believe that caring about others and helping others somehow takes away from themselves. That’s just not true. Probably the number one bringer of joy in our life is meaningful connections with others. If we’re selfish and we’re using people, we don’t

Holistic Living

Spiritually Focused

Green Adventures

benefit from the interactions because they’re empty and meaningless. Numerous studies have shown that being kind and generously brings us far more happiness than being selfish or insensitive. When we care about others, our heart expands, and happiness rushes in. Now that you’ve learned about these five mental habits, you can see that you can transform your life and become really and truly happy. Of course, it will take some work, but it’s a no-brainer. Away to Me, My Love A Sheepdog’s Tale of Two Lives Away to Me, My Love – A Sheepdog’s Tale of Two Lives by Naomi McDonald presents the touching true story of fate that led McDonald to impulsively buy a shy Border Collie pup named Luke and how this decision changed her life forever. In the book, McDonald chronicles her personal journey of empowerment by weaving in stories of childhood trauma into life changing and challenging experiences as an adult with Luke. This allowed her to recognize how the earlier trauma unknowingly affected her life later on which ultimately led her to find healing during the process. A former horse trainer and sheepherding competitor, McDonald is now a professional animal communicator and certified shamanic practitioner and teacher. Her story demonstrates the positive impact animals have on the lives of their humans while also providing a glimpse into the world of competitive sheepherding. Readers will be left spiritually encouraged by McDonald’s transformative journey and thankful for the animal companion in their own lives after learning about the unbreakable and transcending bond she formed with Luke.
