ST. FRANCIS GOES TO BROADWAY James Twyman is known around the world as The Peace Troubadour for his concerts in war-torn countries like Iraq, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, and on a hill overlooking a Syrian village held by ISIS, a concert that prompted Bill Maher to call Twyman the “idiot folk singer from Portland.” He’s the NY Times bestselling author of sixteen books, the producer or director of seven award-winning films and a Billboard Chart bestselling musician.

But it’s his love of St. Francis of Assisi that keeps drawing him back to a life of simple wisdom. OM Times sat down with The Peace Troubadour to ask him about his latest book Giovanni and the Camino of St. Francis, as well as his upcoming off-Broadway musical Brother Sun, Sister Moon
January B edition
JAMES F. TWYMAN | OMTIMES
OMTimes: When did you first feel this connection with St. Francis of Assisi, and why has he inspired you for most of your life? James F. Twyman: First of all, every Catholic child fall in love with what I call the “bird bath” St. Francis, or the saint of animals and nature. In fact, that’s how most people know him - the patron saint of ecology. And for me, it was no different. It wasn’t until I met a Franciscan brother from Chicago that I finally decided to follow the saint from Assisi. I left home right after high school and entered the order, and even though I was only there for two years, it left an indelible impression on me. Then in 1994, a friend gave me a sheet of paper that had the peace prayers from the 12 major religions of the world printed on it. They were first prayed together in Assisi when the leaders of all the religions came there in 1986. They chose Assisi because St. Francis is loved by people from almost every religion, mainly because he was the first inter-religious peacemaker. When I read them for the first time, I had a remarkable experience - I heard music and picked up my guitar and played along. Within one hour, I arranged all 12 of the peace prayers to music and decided I wanted to travel as a penniless troubadour sharing them for the rest of my life. I went to Bosnia in 1995, which was my first trip into a war zone to do the concert, and ended up writing my first book about the experience - Emissary of Light. The book did very well and the next thing I knew I was no longer penniless. Twenty-five years later, I’m being drawn back to that original inspiration - traveling across the country with no money and no idea how I’m getting from place to place, or where I’ll eat or sleep, completely trusting in the generosity of others traveling to New York to do the Brother Sun, Sister Moon musical. It feels like I’ve come full circle.
OMTimes: Why did you feel it was important to travel across the U.S. with no money or plan? James F. Twyman: Because that’s how Francis would have done it, and I wanted to find a way to imitate him. Anyone can perform a big musical in New York, get a nice apartment in the city and pretend to be a star, but that’s the opposite of how he would have acted. That’s why my friend Bill Free and I decided to start in Portland and travel across the U.S., performing the musical in 15 different places along the way, with nothing in our pockets, but faith. I had to come up with rules for the journey, such as taking no money and never flying from one city to another. We can accept rides, or someone can buy us a bus or a train ticket. In many cases, we’re choosing to stay in homeless shelters or even on the streets with the homeless, all because that’s what Francis would have done. He wanted to identify with the poorest of the poor, much as Mother Teresa did in modern times. And when we get to New York, we’ll spend time each day passing out free tickets to the homeless to attend the show, and we’ll have a soup line before each performance for ticket holders as well as guests. I don’t think there’s ever been a Broadway show that actually invited the homeless to attend, but once again, that’s what Francis would have done so that’s what we’re going to do as well. OMTimes: Aren’t you afraid something might happen to you along the way? James F. Twyman: It may sound crazy, but the thought doesn’t even enter into my mind. I remember when I was 21, I was hitchhiking and got mugged. But who’s going to mug St. Francis? That’s pretty bad karma. OMTimes: Are you pretending to be St. Francis on the journey?
James F. Twyman: It would be better to say that I’m stepping into his character for the whole two months, much like a method actor stays in character the entire time they’re shooting a film. I heard that when Daniel Day-Lewis played Lincoln, he never left character the entire shoot, and when it was over it took several days to get his Irish accent back. My goal is to think like Francis and do my best to come from the same place he comes from, but I’m not going to tell people that I’m him. It’s all internal and I can’t wait to see how different I am after the New York shows. OMTimes: Can you remember what inspired you to write the musical in the first place? James F. Twyman: I definitely remember. It was Bruce Springsteen. He did a one-man show called Springsteen on Broadway and it was released on Netflix. As I watched the show, I wondered if St. Francis could do the same thing - tell the story of his life through music. Then I read something else that inspired me - a quote I read from Vladimir Lenin of all people. He once wrote that the revolution he helped start failed and what Russia really needed was 10 St. Francis of Assisi’s. That came from an atheist! If this little man from Assisi was able to move someone like Lenin, maybe there’s something for us to learn in the modern world. I remember thinking: “I’ll be number 10…who will stand up and be the first nine.” OMTimes: On the way across the U.S., you’ll be stopping in 15 cities to share the musical. How did you pick the cities? James F. Twyman: First of all, I’m not sure why I decided to travel across the U.S. in the middle of winter with practically nothing but the clothes on our backs.

There will probably be times when we’ll have to hitchhike because we don’t have rides. For some reason, it felt appropriate even though many people think it’s insane. A lot of people thought Francis was insane as well, especially at the beginning of his ministry. It took several years for people to realize there was something deeper happening, and I think it will be the same for Bill and me. We could take the easy route and it would be fine, but that wouldn’t be as inspiring. The first thing I did was decide on a general route then see if there was a church or a convent or any other place that would be interested in hosting the event. They were all intrigued by the idea and before long, we had a straight line across the country. OMTimes: Isn’t there something unusual about the event in Peoria, Illinois? James F. Twyman: Yes, there is. When I was in seventh grade, my family moved to central Illinois and we left when I was entering tenth grade. At the time, we attended the local Catholic church and my brothers and sisters, and I attended Catholic school. I was an altar boy and that’s where I had my confirmation. It’s also where I had a dramatic mystical experience one day during mass. I was looking at a statue of St. Francis and it felt like he looked right at me. It was so powerful and I knew that I wanted to follow him one day. I tried to tell my parents and a few others, but they said it was just my imagination. But I never forgot about it. A few weeks ago, I received a message from the pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Peoria. He said that he had read my new book and heard about the musical, then asked if it was possible to stop at the church on my way to Chicago. I couldn’t believe it...because Holy Family was my former parish, the church where I had the experience. It was like St. Francis reaching out to me again from the same place he first made an impact. OMTimes: Were you able to fit it into the schedule?
JAMES F. TWYMAN | OMTIMES
James F. Twyman: Most definitely. It fit perfectly. There was no way I was going to miss out on an opportunity like that! OMTimes: Your new book Giovanni and the Camino of St. Francis is a modern retelling of the life of the saint’s life, but it’s also a story about a woman who seems to have given up on life. What inspired you to write that? James F. Twyman: I had actually decided I wouldn’t write another book since I didn’t think I had anything left to say - unless one knocked on the door of my heart in a way I couldn’t ignore. And that’s exactly what happened. There’s a trail that leads from a monastery in Tuscany called La Verna all the way to Assisi. Francis walked that trail many times and today pilgrims travel the 110 miles to Assisi just as they do the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The first time I walked the Italian Camino was in 2012. I started playing with this story about a woman from Portland named Anna who’s had a pretty tough life. She was actually born in Assisi but was forced to move to the U.S. when she was 17 because she was pregnant. She never returned and now in her late fifties, she decides to walk the Camino - but she doesn’t want to hear anything about God since she’s an unbeliever. That’s when she meets this passionate young Italian named Giovanni who can’t seem to stop talking about God and St. Francis. They become Camino partners and very slowly, with his stories about Francis, Giovanni breaks through and Anna has great healing. The story went through my mind for about six years, and I finally sat and wrote it down. After 16 books, I feel like I’ve written one that’s for ages, one people might read for decades to come since it touches on Universal themes and relates the stories from St. Francis’s life in a simple but profound way.
OMTimes: How does it compare with other books you’ve written in the past? For example, one of your best-known books, The Moses Code, was made into a movie, and The Barn Dance was about the loss of your former wife. Did they have the same impact on you that Giovanni has had?
James F. Twyman: Nothing has had more impact on me than The Barn Dance. Linda was murdered in 2005 and the book was a major part of my healing. I was so filled with grief and after three years, I couldn’t shake the guilt I felt like I should have been able to stop it from happening. It’s very difficult to describe what happened, but basically, I was drawn to a remote area of eastern Oregon where my daughter and I almost died in a car accident on the way back from Linda’s funeral in Chicago. I ended up meeting a man in the woods who took me to meet a very unusual group of people in a huge barn in the middle of nowhere, and what I encountered in that barn healed my heart. It’s definitely my personal favorite of all the books I’ve written because I needed to write it so badly.
One of the men said that if I wanted him to, he would work with me for two weeks and would help me pull it together. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make but I said yes, and in the end, we re-shot 70 percent of the film and re-edited 100 percent. It was a different film, all in two weeks. And it was so much better - even brilliant. And the funny thing about that is that the man who helped me was Drew Heriot - the director of The Secret. The whole project started with my distress over The Secret and in the end, the man who directed that movie saved mine. OMTimes: Your bio says that you received a profession as a Franciscan hermit recently. Tell us what that means and how it’s impacting your life. James F. Twyman: The two years I spent as a Franciscan when I was young had a big impact on me. There’s a saying I heard a long time ago - Once a Franciscan always a Franciscan - and I think it’s true. Francis gets inside you. He’s very compelling and never let's go. It’s his humility and simplicity that keeps drawing me back. So a couple of years ago, I asked a friend who is a Catholic bishop to allow me to take private vows and he accepted, but as much as I would love to meditate all day like a hermit, the world keeps pulling me back, just as it did St. Francis. His strongest desire was to stay in his cave near the top of Mt. Subasio, but the responsibilities of the order kept calling him away. Maybe one day after I finish this tour I’ll be able to be a better hermit.
And The Moses Code was different again. I was inspired to write it after I saw the movie The Secret for the first time. I thought it was a very well made film, but I also felt it was very dangerous because it was all about using spiritual laws to get what we don’t have, or attracting cars and houses and more money. I literally stood up after watching the film and began writing, trying to bring what I saw as the ego’s Law of Attraction, the way it was presented in The Secret, back to the soul. The soul and ego have a mantra. The OMTimes: You still seem very Catholic in ego’s mantra is “I Want,” while the soul’s your approach. Is that true? mantra is “I AM.” James F. Twyman: Yes and no. The majority Then something really interesting happened. of the dogma of the Catholic Church means We were nearly finished with the movie, and nothing to me, but there is a deep mysticism I showed it to three friends in LA. One of there that always calls me. In the fourth them was the late Debbie Ford and the other century, St. Augustine famously said: “The two men were filmmakers. Of course, I Church is a whore, but she’s my mother.” I wanted them to say it was brilliant and I can relate to that. Even if I don’t agree with didn’t need to change a thing, but they my mother, I still love her. didn’t. JAMES F. TWYMAN | OMTIMES

But I also love the way everyone approaches God, just as St. Francis did. That’s why I think he’s still so popular today and offers the world such a powerful opportunity. OMTimes: You seem to believe he holds the answer to many of our problems today. James F. Twyman: I do. Francis lived at the end of what we now call the Dark Ages, and yet he was a major inspiration for the age that came next - the Renaissance. He sparked the imagination of all the great artists and poets who came after him. Today it seems we’re living in a new kind of dark age, one where we’re more polarized than ever before. It makes me wonder if Lenin was right. Maybe what we need is a small group of people who are as committed to peace and transformation as St. Francis was 800 years ago. That’s why he’s so universally loved, and its hopefully why people will come out to see this show when it’s on tour or in New York. OMTimes: If St. Francis was here right now, what would his final message be? James F. Twyman: I think he would remind us of how simple the truth is. He would say that we just have to surrender and trust, and maybe be like children again - in awe of everything. It sounds cliché, but I don’t think it is. That’s why stories of his life live on from century to century. .
Hopefully, we can learn the same lessons he learned, and a new fire will engulf the world just as it did in his time. To get more information on James Twyman, his latest book, or to watch the first twenty minutes of the Brother Sun, Sister Moon musical shot in Assisi, go to www.JimmyTwyman.com.

example, people use colors to discuss emotions, “I was green with envy,” or “I was so mad I saw red,” or “I am blue today.” Colors amplify correlating emotions. Most scientists believe that energy from light and sound do not interact as they have different properties. However, this idea is a foundational principle of ancient wisdom. We see this process working in different areas of our lives. For example, some have difficulty imagining that a colored light causes a physiologic effect inside the human body. Traditional medical research observed the effects of light within the body. Blue-light therapy is used for some types of neonatal jaundice. Blue light is applied to the skin to cause a chemical reaction in the blood circulating under the surface of the skin, effectively lessening bilirubin levels. In another case, an ultraviolet light generates the production of vitamin D. The human body produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Finally, full-spectrum light exposure helps those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a condition believed to be caused by insufficient light exposure through the eyes to the hypothalamus, thence onto the pituitary gland, which controls the endocrine system. In these documented cases, light affects our

Practical applications of this information include things like imagining your liver in red light to tune it and associating red with an actionoriented person. Also related to colors are astrological signs. Not only may a zodiac sign describe your personality, your sign often relates to your fundamental color. When you look at the view of Earth from space, you are immediately in awe of what you do see: the incredible beauty of Creation. It is not until you look closer that you realize what you do not see. You do not see lines partitioning countries. You do not see separation between races. You do not see division between religions. You do not see the walls people build to isolate themselves from each other. There is only One Planet. There is only One Humanity. This section is dedicated to introducing thoughts and ideas to foster a greater understanding of Humanity’s interdependence.

Away to Me, My Love A Sheepdog’s Tale of Two Lives Away to Me, My Love – A Sheepdog’s Tale of Two Lives by Naomi McDonald presents the touching true story of fate that led McDonald to impulsively buy a shy Border Collie pup named Luke and how this decision changed her life forever. In the book, McDonald chronicles her personal journey of empowerment by weaving in stories of childhood trauma into life changing and challenging experiences as an adult with Luke. This allowed her to recognize how the earlier trauma unknowingly affected her life later on which ultimately led her to find healing during the process. A former horse trainer and sheepherding competitor, McDonald is now a professional animal communicator and certified shamanic practitioner and teacher. Her story demonstrates the positive impact animals have on the lives of their humans while also providing a glimpse into the world of competitive sheepherding. Readers will be left spiritually encouraged by McDonald’s transformative journey and thankful for the animal companion in their own lives after learning about the unbreakable and transcending bond she formed with Luke.
