Nothing is more important than our health. We've heard that phrase so often that, for many, it has faded into background noise. But as has been evident of late, we cannot afford to ignore this any longer. Michael Murray, M.D., is one of the world's leading authorities on natural medicine and the author of 30 books with six million copies in print. A graduate and former faculty member of Bastyr University in Seattle, he also serves on the Board of Regents. Dr. Michael Murray has literally written the Textbook of Natural Medicine for Healthcare Practitioners, as well as the Encyclopaedia of Natural Medicine for the lay public.
His latest book, The Longevity Matrix, provides a wealth of valuable information on immune health and its role in combatting the Corona Virus. Sandie Sedgbeer sat down with Dr. Michael Murray a few weeks ago to naturally discuss how we can safeguard and boost our health and longevity prospects.
Sandie Sedgbeer: When we spoke on air a few weeks ago, we discussed several important topics covered in your book, The Longevity Matrix: How to Live Better, Stronger and Longer, which included the immune system and the critical role it plays in fighting viruses and staving off disease. Tell us how the immune system impacts longevity and health generally. Then perhaps we can look at it concerning the SARS CO-V2 virus. Dr. Michael Murray: The immune system is really intricate. It's one of the great frontiers of physiology, of the science of studying how our body works. Other body systems have been mapped out really well. Still, we're continually learning new ways in which our immune system is working to protect us. That's especially true with aging and the SARS Cov-2 virus responsible for this Pandemic. It's a complicated subject. The first thing we have to look at is the key components and overall objective of the immune system? The immune system comprises some of our barrier mechanisms that protect against organisms entering our body.
It consists of our white blood cells and the tissues that make them. White blood cells are made in the bone marrow. We have special white blood cells that are matured in the Thymus Gland. This is the Master Gland of the immune system, which lies in a bib-like fashion in our upper chest. It controls an aspect of the immune function called Cell-Mediated Immunity. This arm of the immune system is critical in fighting against viruses. It's also a critical factor in longevity and in fighting against cancer formation. The health of the thymus is also critical in dealing with the SARS Cov-2 virus. The lymphatic system, lymphatic vessels, and our spleen are the main components of the immune system. The immune system is a really good reflection of our overall health. One of the things that we're learning (thanks to this Pandemic) is how important it is to our overall health. OMTIMES MAGAZINE

So, when we look at those comorbidities, we have to ask how well they impact immune function? Is there a way to counteract some of the adverse effects these comorbidities have to protect people? And then what can we do to make sure that people who are generally healthy are protected? That's what I'd like to focus on today. What can we do to support our immune system, and how does that relate to both longevity and this virus that we're all concerned about? Sandie Sedgbeer: Yes. What is necessary to support the immune system? What does it thrive? Dr. Michael Murray: I look at four things that are the foundations of health—a positive mental attitude, a health-promoting lifestyle, an optimal diet, and lastly, supplementary measures, i.e., dietary supplements, herbal products, and other methods to support our health. So, when we look at the first foundation, the power of the positive mental attitude, there's a long list of scientific investigations into this link and an entire field of study called psychoneuroimmunology, which is devoted to looking at how our attitude, our mind, our thoughts, and emotions influence our immune system.

When we don't take care of our immune system, we run the increased risk of having infections and suffering more severe consequences. We see that with this Pandemic. What we are learning with this Pandemic is that if you have comorbidities – if you are overweight, have high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic lung disease – you are at an increased risk of developing more severe infection and dying from this virus than if you didn't have those comorbidities and have a strong immune function.

One of the most detrimental states on our immune system is being depressed or stressed out. When we're under stress, it activates our sympathetic nervous system, the arm of the autonomic or unconscious nervous system responsible for the fight or flight response. Think about what your body would need to get away from a tiger; getting a virus or an infection under control becomes less important because the body's going to mobilize energy to escape from that immediate danger. When we're under stress, we activate the sympathetic nervous system, which is extremely immunesuppressive. Many people might be familiar with the drug Prednisone, a form of cortical steroid or cortisol. When under stress, we produce and secrete more cortisol, one of the few hormones that increase with age. With increasing cortisol levels, we get sleep disturbances, depression, and blood sugar issues. Higher cortisol levels lead to Type 2 Diabetes. We get bone and connective tissue breakdown. So, we need to do everything we can to get our stress levels under control. It's a combination of removing as many straws off that camel's back as we can but also boosting the strength of that camel's back.
One of the antidotes to stress is activating our parasympathetic nervous system. This is the arm of our autonomic nervous system responsible for repair, rejuvenation, and restoration. We can activate parasympathetic activity by producing the relaxation response, which is the opposite of the stress response. You can activate this through meditation, prayer, and deep breathing exercises. Nature is built into us. When we are in a relaxed state and breathe with our diaphragm or use those belly muscles for breathing, it sends a signal up to the brain to relax. There's a method of stopping and taking a breath when you're starting to feel stressed out. It can arrest that stress response, but we need to consciously set time aside each day to engage in producing that parasympathetic response through deep breathing exercises, meditation, and prayer. I'd say at least five minutes twice a day would be the minimum, and if you're under a lot of stress, you may need to devote more time. That's the first foundation of developing a positive mental attitude and activating that parasympathetic nervous system.

The next thing is our lifestyle, which plays a huge role in our immune system's health. If we're not getting enough sleep, we are engaged in harmful health habits like excessive drinking of alcohol or not engaging in regular exercise, etc. Not following a healthy lifestyle significantly affects immune function. Studies show that just helping people with some basic lifestyle modification has dramatic effects on improving immune function. One special cell a white blood cell that is improved, is called the natural killer cell, and it's getting a lot of attention right now in Covid 19. It's given its name because when it gets next to a cancer cell or a cell infected by a virus, or some sort of disease-causing organism, it will literally kill that organism. So, it's a really crucial component of our immune system defense. Just changing or improving a person's lifestyle has dramatic effects on that natural killer cell activity. These are things that people don't really think about in terms of how they impact their immune system. They may know they need to rest and get some good sleep, but they may not realize that certain health practices or unhealthy practices are detrimental to our immune function. The next area is diet. If you look at the effects of sugar on the immune system, oh my gosh. Higher blood sugar levels basically paralyze white blood cells' ability to move and migrate to areas of infection and then act on pathogens, disease-causing organisms. So, sugar levels in the diet and blood are significant to get under control if you want to have a really good functioning immune system. Other dietary factors that are important—your immune system requires every known nutrient to function properly— so, the efficiency of any vitamin, mineral, or single nutrient, has significant disruption of the immune system.
So, we want to make sure we are eating a healthy diet. But I also think that taking a good high-potency, multiple vitamin and mineral formula is really important. We know that giving people who are nutrient-deficient the nutrient they need leads to remarkable immune function improvements. This has been shown in elderly subjects. Typically, as people age, their immune system starts to function sub-optimally, and, like a lot of conditions we associate with aging, we say, "oh, it's a sideeffect of aging." Well, it's not, because if you give older people with some immune suppression a highpotency, multiple vitamins, and mineral formula, their immune system comes back to a more youthful state. So, if we give the cells in our body the tools they need to be healthy, they've got a better chance of being healthy. In our immune system, these cells respond well to super nutrition. Nutrition is the critical factor for most people in determining the function of their immune system. Now we've talked about attitude and lifestyle. Still, the most significant factor leading to immune dysfunction is a lack of certain key nutrients and a lack of a high-quality diet. Some of the foods that I think are really important to focus on are richlycolored vegetables rich in carotenes. I came across a study that was done in 1931. In some ways, it wasn't that sophisticated, but the results were amazing. When they looked at blood levels of carotene and the number of school days missed, they found that kids with lower carotenes had a significantly greater number of missed school days, primarily due to infections. In comparison, kids with higher carotene levels had fewer infections and fewer school days missed. The reason is that these carotenes are so important in helping the function of the Thymus Gland.
I mentioned the Thymus Gland earlier. It's the key organ of our immune system, and it's responsible for maturing a type of white blood cell called the T Cell. These cells are critical in fighting cancer and fungal and viral infections. What they're finding in Covid 19 is that in people who have had an infection, with or without symptoms, their levels of antibodies are disappearing. Typically, the focus has been on when we talk about immunity to a virus; we focus on antibodies. That's the way that most vaccines work. You give a part of that virus or inactivated virus. The body responds by producing antibodies produced by a different type of white blood cell called B Cells. When these antibodies bind to those antigens, viral proteins, or other organisms' proteins, they wipe out the infecting organism. With Covid 19, it's the T Cells that are more important as these can kill viruses not by producing antibodies but by a direct cellular attack. We have specialized T Cells called Memory T Cells. Researchers have discovered that about 40% to 50% of people walk around with partial immunity against the SARS COV-2 virus. This discovery means that many people have been exposed to other types of Coronaviruses – because Coronaviruses can cause the common cold and evidently, the T Cells have recognized SARS COV 2 in some people, just as it might recognize a prior Coronavirus they may have been exposed to – so there's some immunity. That kind of explains why some people have mild or no infections. It also gives hope that we're maybe closer to herd immunity than we previously thought based on looking at antibody levels.

So, how do we help with T Cell function? How do we help improve our virus-killing activity? By supporting the thymus gland. One - stress is really detrimental. Two - not getting enough sleep is detrimental to thymus function, and then I mentioned the carotene link. Thymus tissue is susceptible to oxidative or free radical damage. When exposed to higher prooxidants, highly reactive compounds in food, cigarette smoke, or pollution, the thymus starts to involute. It shrinks, which leads to significantly impaired immune function, particularly cell-mediated immunity, controlled by these T Cells. So, the elderly are particularly hit hard with Covid 19 because of depressed cell-mediated immunity, primarily due to reduced thymus gland function. Now, put elderly people on a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula. You will see improved immune function because the thymus gland is getting the support it needs. The thymus gland needs all these essential nutrients. People have to realize that these are termed essential nutrients for a reason. They're required for our body to function correctly, which is evident in nutrient deficiency's impact on our immune systems. Sandie Sedgbeer: Stress plays a critical role in suppressing our immune system. Yet, with the media creating so much fear in people, everybody is far more stressed than they were before. We know that our soil is depleted and that the foods we're growing aren't as rich in nutrients as they were 30-40 years ago. We've got GMO's to contend with. It seems that we're fighting a battle on every front, and the only thing that doesn't seem to be a problem is the fact that we have access to much better nutrients via supplements. Dr. Michael Murray: Absolutely. No question about it. You touched on a couple of things that we don't focus on much, and that is that we have nutrient-depleted soil and that the level of nutrients in our foods is far lower than it was 100 years ago. Just look at the size of some fruits. I remember when I was a kid, how big an apple was. Today's apples are enormous, but they are less nutrient-dense than foods in the wild, which are much more nutrient-dense. So, we've bred our food supply high in calories, in some regard, but low in vitamins and minerals. That's one reason we have these issues.
Sandie Sedgbeer: We hear a lot lately about Superfoods, but when you compare Superfoods. You compare a supplement, for example, one produced by a trusted manufacturer, we know what's in that supplement. Still, we don't know what's in that Superfood. Are we getting to a place where we're going to stop eating food, and we're going to start eating more supplements? Dr. Michael Murray: Yes. I do everything. People always ask me what the most important recommendation I can give people is. My answer, which I highlight in The Longevity Matrix, is that our body is a system. In many cases, we're not feeding it what it needs. All these nutrients that are getting attention right now for their immunity-fighting effects are only as beneficial as the chain's weakest link. So, Vitamin D. The research on Vitamin D is very compelling, not just against viral infections but also Covid 19. In people who have low vitamin D status, the risk of having more severe symptoms increases dramatically. Vitamin D works best when accompanied by a host of other nutrients that are critical to immune health. Zinc is getting a lot of attention. It's the master nutrient for thymus function and cell-mediating immunity. Selenium is also critical. If you look at the severity of Covid 19 factions in regions with low Selenium status, the association is pretty straightforward.

There hasn't been any clinical evaluation of selenium status and Covid 19. Still, there are some interesting correlations between the severity of selenium deficiency in a region and the severity of Covid 19. For example, suppose you look at China. Some areas have high selenium content in the soil and areas where the selenium content is very, very low. When you look at a map of Covid 19 severity—patients hospitalized or developed severe symptoms of Covid 19—it overlays perfectly with those areas with low selenium status. Selenium is one of the most important antioxidant nutrients, and it's critical to thymus gland function. Selenium supplementation, even in people who had adequate Selenium levels, significantly improved white blood cells' ability to kill tumour cells. This is mostly a reflection of cell-mediated immunity. At this time, I would recommend taking 200 mcg per day of Selenium. I like yeast-based Selenium. There's a form called SelenoExcell that has the best science behind it, and it's been shown to outperform other forms of Selenium. Selenium is very important in protecting against heart disease – lots of great epidemiological data there – and very important in fighting cancer. We could wipe out the risk of prostate cancer in about 50% of men simply by giving them a special form of Selenium.
Sandie Sedgbeer: What about other nutrients like high-dose vitamin C, alpha-lipoic acid, melatonin, probiotics, homeopathy. There have been so many things that have been touted and shouted down by the media. It's difficult to know what is real. Dr. Michael Murray: There are a lot of good things that are real. Zinc is real. Zinc inhibits an enzyme called viral replicate. If you block the replication of the virus, you basically stop the infection in its tracks. One of how Hydroxychloroquine is going to work is through the action of zinc. Hydroxychloroquine opens up channels that allow ionic zinc to be transferred into the cell. There's a flavonoid called Quercetin that has the same effect. We can get a lot of Quercetin from onions and garlic. Quercetin is the backbone structure of the flavonoids that are in berries and chocolate. Green tea has some flavonoids that were also shown to increase the inter-cellular concentration of zinc. So, flavonoids help zinc work better. On the flip side, zinc helps our immune system and these flavonoids to exert some direct antiviral effects that are fantastic. When we look at some of these studies, we see a synergistic effect, so zinc works very well with vitamin C in many functions. It works well with Vitamin D, and it really works well with a lot of these flavonoids. So, again, we see the importance of diet come into play. I think that when it's all said and done with this Pandemic, we're going to come out of it recognizing that diet is really the critical factor in determining the function of our immune system and our susceptibility to this virus.

One of the key biochemical findings that are linked to the severity of Covid 19 is the level of cellular glutathione. This substance is our essential intercellular antioxidant and has some really great functions in helping us fight against viruses, including some anti-viral activity. We can boost glutathione levels by having more antioxidants in our diet and through supplementation. Vitamin C boosts glutathione levels, as can all of these mineral antioxidants I've talked about; flavonoids and carotenes.

As far as a supplement goes, one that's really received a lot of attention is N-acetylL-cysteine, a precursor to glutathione. Still, it also has some benefits on its own. One key benefit is that it's been used in medicine for decades to thin out thick mucus. One of the things that predispose people to respiratory tract infections is their mucus' decreased function because of some altered structural components. N-acetyl-L-cysteine is a mucal limbic. It helps break down thick mucus and clear micro-organisms from our respiratory tract more efficiently. Boosting glutathione levels is not just associated with better immune function; it's also associated with protection against every known chronic generative disease. So, if you want to live longer, you need to have high glutathione levels. Suppose you want to have a healthy brain function and avoid Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In that case, you need to have higher brain glutathione levels. Suppose you want to continue to have the proper liver function to eliminate toxic compounds in our food, water, and air. In that case, you need higher levels of glutathione.
Boosting glutathione levels is not just associated with better immune function; it's also associated with protection against every known chronic generative disease. So, if you want to live longer, you need to have high glutathione levels. Suppose you want to have a healthy brain function and avoid Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In that case, you need to have higher brain glutathione levels. Suppose you want to continue to have the proper liver function to eliminate toxic compounds in our food, water, and air. In that case, you need higher levels of glutathione. If you want to have healthy heart function, you need higher levels of glutathione. These things are not just beneficial for our immune system and in promoting longevity; they also have systemic effects in other tissues and body systems. As it relates to Covid 19, glutathione's level appears to be one of the key determinants in the disease's severity. The same thing is true of vitamin D, zinc, and melatonin. All of these compounds work together. And let's take a really constructive approach in planning out their diet, our supplement program, and our lifestyle.
It's going to have significant effects not just on our immune system but also on every cell throughout our body. And that's what I've tried to do in The Longevity Matrix; to help people realize that we are a system, and we really have to think about how we can best support our system. What are the components that can make our lives better? To me, it's such a self-evident approach to life, and I've been trying to get people to see this way for my entire professional career. Sandie Sedgbeer: Books like The Longevity Matrix are necessary because we're not allowed to make claims on supplements.
Every single authority out there is doing its best to ensure the public doesn't know what's good for them. So, the only way is for people like you to talk about it and to publish books. Dr. Michael Murray: I talk about it all the time. What amazes me is how many times I've just mentioned something like, "You know there's a compound in eggplant that works as well as a statin on cholesterol levels?" And people say, "Oh, really, that's interesting." Then I start talking about different things such as cabbage. "You know, Dr. Garnett Cheney in the '50s at Stanford University showed that cabbage juice was an effective treatment of peptic ulcers." It was one of the first clinically proven treatments of peptic ulcers.
When I start talking about these different aspects of food, people will look at me quizzically and say, "It's almost like nature has given us the tools that we need to heal. It's in the food that we eat." To me, that's self-evident, but people haven't quite figured that out. So, what are some foods that we can really focus on? There was a recent study with garlic against this virus. You know garlic is well-known as a natural antibiotic, and onions have a similar compound and shallots. Then we start looking at the spices. Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom. They all have significant anti-viral effects and immune system effects. What about all the great herbs? All the mint family herbs have antiviral bacterial compounds.

Sandie Sedgbeer: What about mushrooms? Dr. Michael Murray: Mushrooms, exactly. It's never-ending, right? So, there are actually many people who can support their immune system through better food choices. People just have to educate themselves. Sometimes, our medical community is biased against natural approaches. They're not doing what they should be doing, making recommendations based on reasonable certainty versus absolute proof. I'll give you an example. The New England Journal of Medicine said that the most significant discovery in the second half of the 20th Century was the link between folic acid deficiency and neural tube defects. That data existed for over 40 years. They knew that folic acid deficiency led to neural tube defects. They waited until there was so much evidence showing the link that obstetricians and others started recommending that all pregnant women, or women thinking about getting pregnant, should take a folic acid supplement. In the meantime, hundreds of thousands of children were born with a birth defect that could have been prevented if their mothers simply took a safe dietary supplement. The septenary theory is an important part of the Anthroposophy doctrine, a stream of thought created by the philosopher Rudolf Steiner. In this philosophy, he understands that there is a kind of "pedagogy of living," which, according to Steiner, covers various life sectors, such as education, health, agronomy, among others. This philosophy is the line of thought that understands that human beings need to know themselves to know the Universe, of which we are part. We are all stardust, aren't we? According to Steiner, Anthroposophy is "a path of knowledge that wants to take the spirit of the human entity to the spirit of the universe."

With each cycle that passes, we learn to grow, look at the world, have a different body, live intensely, get married, among others. The world's phases are flowing so that the cycles give space to others and so on consecutively until our last breath. The number 7 in this context is seen as an important number for numerology and mysticism. Steiner was also studying its scientific effect of this number on our life and body.

LIFE CYCLES AND THE THEORY OF SEPTANARY The seven years' theory was created by observing the rhythms of nature and nature itself in the sense of life. According to the theory, life is divided into seven-year phases - the number 7 is known to be a mystical number with a lot of power. Through this theory, it is possible to understand more easily the cyclical condition of human life. In each phase, we add more knowledge to our lives and seek new challenges. However, the theory of the seven years can only be understood as a systemic metaphor. After all, we know that people change through the centuries and that human development is increasingly accelerated. Human beings' organism is more adapted, which may mean that not all descriptions of the stages (seven years) make sense. Still, the theory stays current. Today we can say that the seven years are no longer composed precisely by seven years of chronological time, but by each X year cycle. The Septenary of the Body From 0 to 21 years old, the first three cycles of life are called seven years of the body. This is the period when the physical maturation of the body and the formation of the personality occurs.

THE SEVENTHS OF SOUL From 21 to 42 years of age, the subsequent three cycles are called the soul's seven years. It is in this period that we overcome the essential experiences. In it, we are inserted in society, and we make choices as to what area we will work in, whether we will form a marriage if we live with our family. LAST SEVEN Only after 42 years have, we reached the last seven years. They only happen when we are prepared to immerse ourselves in life with depth, maturity, and spirituality. THE STAGES OF LIFE: CAN YOU IDENTIFY? Below you will get to know each of the theory's seven years, thus allowing you to reflect and understand the cycles of life: 0 TO 7 YEARS - THE NEST The first cycle is early childhood. Here is the individualization phase. When our body's construction takes place, which has already been separated from our mother, and our mind and personality. In these seven years, it is important to experience free movement, games, and running. The child needs to know his body, as well as his limits. It should form its perceptions of the world here. That is why, in these seven years, physical space is important, as is the space for spiritual living and thinking. 7 TO 14 YEARS - MEANING OF YOURSELF, AUTHORITY OF THE OTHER The second seven years that we are experiencing allow a profound awakening of one's own feelings. The organs that develop at this stage are the lungs and the heart.
However, suppose the authority and demands of the country and teachers are more fluid and without resonance. In that case, the child will find that the world has no limits, which will prevent dangerous behaviors from being inhibited. Therefore, the adults' role is to determine the world's image that the child will have. 14 TO 21 YEARS - IDENTITY CRISIS At this stage, known as puberty and adolescence, the search for freedom is experienced. When you don't want parents, teachers, and other adults to be on your toes, it is the phase. Here the body is already formed, and that's when the first exchanges with society take place. When it comes to these seven years, the body no longer needs so much space for locomotion and 'space.' There is another meaning, that of the possibility of 'being.' This is the stage where you need to recognize yourself be recognized. It is the moment when everything and everyone is questioned. But this is also the phase of discernment. That's when career and professional choices are made. It is the time for the entrance exam, the first job, and the beginning of economic freedom of life. 21 TO 28 YEARS - INDEPENDENCE AND TALENT CRISIS Individuality gains strength in these seven years to stabilize. There is an end to bodily growth, and a process of spiritual and mental growth begins. It is often the time when you no longer live with your family and no longer at school, thus being a cycle of employment, self-education, and development of your talents.
This is an emancipation cycle at all levels. Still, it is a phase in which others influence a lot in making our decisions, as a society will tell the pace of each person's life. In these seven years, values, life lessons, and learning begin to make more sense. Our energies are already more pacified and having our place in the world becomes the main objective. When goals are not achieved, much anxiety and frustration are generated.

28 TO 35 YEARS - EXISTENTIAL CRISES Have you heard of the 30-year crisis? Many say it was the Return of the Planet Saturn to the same place on your star map when you were born. Because it is part of these seven years, and there is an explanation for its existence. In the 5th septennium, life crises begin. There is an identity shock, the demand for success not yet reached, and the beginning of frustrations and sadness for being sure that everything cannot be done. There is a great sense of anguish and emptiness among those who are in this phase. Tastes change, and people feel they don't know each other. They feel powerless during this transition from youth to maturity when they have to put aside their impulsiveness to face life with more responsibility.
35 TO 42 YEARS - CRISIS OF AUTHENTICITY The Septenary period is linked to the previous one, where existential crises begin. Here we are experiencing a crisis of authenticity generated by the reflections that occurred in the previous cycle.
It is when the essence is sought in everything and everyone, in others and in ourselves. There is a slowdown in the mind and body's rhythm, making it easier to reach more subtle thought frequencies. At this stage, it is essential to go after new things to do. 42 TO 49 YEARS - ALTRUISM PHASE X WANTS TO KEEP THE EXPANSIVE PHASE (Uranus Opposition-The Uranus Opposition is one of several significant cycles that usually hit in our mid-40s. Astrology has, of course, known about them for many years, but they've been grouped together in popular culture and called them "mid-life crisis.") In this cycle, an air of relief, resumption, and resurrection is felt. The thirties crisis has already lost strength. It is the moment when people are desperately looking for new things that make life meaningful. It is the phase in which you think less melancholy about existential issues and acts more. It is when what has been poorly solved begins to be solved. Sometimes, people quit a job that they can't stand, ask for a divorce, or even decide to have a child. That's when we feel homesick and want to relive the memories of adolescence when we were young. It is a phrase resulting from the fear of aging. 49 TO 56 YEARS - LISTENING TO THE WORLD Here there is the development of the spirit. This is a positive and peaceful seven-year period. NOMADIC
