OMTimes was fortunate to sit down with Kerry Rhodes and Farzin Toussi to talk about their new movie, The Medicine, and the Incredible healing journey with Ayahuasca.

n o doubt, the documentary gift us with a voyage

through the shamanic origins of Ayahuasca, as a medicine and as a spiritual practice. The wisdom from a time when the storytellers of old would describe how everything in our manifested Universe was bubbling with life, a time when rocks, stones, plants a had wisdom when they talked to each other. But then, Man was created. Tradition tells us that Medicine was first hidden in the world when the Conquistadores subjugated the Incas. Many of these groups migrated to the Amazon's basin, and there they organized themselves to preserve the ageless roots of healing through thousands of years. Several archeological registries point to the fact that the Medicine was used by traditional Shamans and different ethnicities from various ancient cultures on the Amazon forest for at least 4000 years. The Ancestral ways of Healing with Yage, Ambiwaska, or Ayahuasca was passed down along with all its spiritual rituals through generations for Amazonian shamans.

The Spiritual Work of the Taitas In simple terms, the Taitas are the spiritual guides of their tribes. They are the guardians of the old ways. They are the living repositories of the knowledge of healing and of evolution. They are the guides on this curative path of selfdiscovery and communion with the sacred. Ayahuasca and Science & Visions of the Jungle It is no secret that all psychedelic substances change the chemistry of our brains, also altering our way of seeing the world. It is said that Ayahuasca may have the same effect as the others, acting as a switchboard, reducing significantly the power of the brain's default mode structure, which is responsible for keeping our world centered, limited, and focusing our attention of what is our immediate for survival.

I think it's obvious that the psychedelics are demonized and illegalized by our society because somewhere in our society are controlling minds that realize that these substances have the potential, have the power to unpick the controlling hierarchy. Graham Hancock The tendency towards negativity is what the brain's default mode network is all about. However, the brain is plastic — meaning changeable. We can form new neural pathways to become happier. We can choose our destiny. Ayahuasca Experiences are known to expand the brain ability to receive and exchange more stimulus, more information, creating a more comprehensive brain network of connections. At the same time, it supplies a more significant cerebral bandwidth. All of this would allow an individual to boost an innovative way of thinking and ingenuity.

The Ayahuasca experience allows the various parts of the brain to link up and build new neuro pathways through a process called Synapse and Neuroplasticity. The concept of Synapses and Plasticity is important because it allows the brain to expand, to change, to adapt through forming new and different connections. The Sacred Ceremony Two Plants are used to produce this sacred brew. When they are combined, they can release hallucinogenic alkaloids-DMT. This is a known psychedelic that helps the various regions of the brain to connect to the Amygdala, which is a part of the brain that, along with the frontal lobes, is the place where the Consciousness seems to be located.


Our allopathic Medicine and society define Ayahuasca as a dangerous drug and associate it with other hazardous ones, regarding this sacred process as one devoid of any "medicinal properties" but offer no scientific research to prove their misconceptions. Grandmother Ayahuasca Ayahuasca is more than a psychedelic trip like it happened during the wild 60's years. It is not a form of Escapism, but instead, it is a journey of discovery, of connections, and ultimately an honest pursuit for Oneness, as a reliable and efficient method of Healing and Evolution. The old sacred ceremonies reveal a web of complex phenomena that make the logical explanation almost impossible. Is it the plant that talks and guides us through visionary work, or is the Consciousness (Spirit) behind the plant? She is not a co-creation of your brain; she is not isolated in you. She is part of a broader consciousness we call LIFE. Many people that underwent this mystical journey affirm that the Ayahuasca experience is the personification Of the Mother Goddess of this planet that cares for the creation she oversees and manages about every form of life, as each and every one was one of her Children. HEALING TRAUMA, SOCIAL DISEASES, AND SUICIDE Abuse, the onslaught of hate, the rise of greed to unbelievable levels; these have been constant elements of our modern reality. The Shamans and medicine men believe that Mother Ayahuasca can help cure some of these social diseases because they are coming for the soul of mankind. They believe that through the sacred Medicine, it is possible to use the ancient knowledge to bring back the harmonically balance and communion with nature, and all its parts and beings.

Ayahuasca is a brew that's made from the vine, which is the hallucinogenic element. And then there's also this leaf from a bush. And the vine is supposed to be the masculine, and the bush is supposed to be the feminine. This female shaman did a tea-drinking ceremony with us, where we drank Wyoosa. And the intention was to go and find pieces of your soul that were missing and bring them back to your body so you could live more fully with yourself, and it's called soul retrieval. KERRY RHODES AYAHUASCA'S JOURNEY

OMTimes: Why did you decide to take this journey with Ayahuasca. Did you nurture the real intention to change yourself, physically, mentally, and spiritually? Kerry Rhodes: Yeah, I decided to make the journey about 3 1/2 years ago. It was really about me understanding that the life I was leading at the time was not conducive to the human experience that I wanted for me moving forward. My initial introduction to the Medicine was from the experience from the director Farzin and his wife because of their experience with the Medicine. I was able to see what it did for them and how they were reacting to it. Then the changes that I saw with them personally sparked my interest. Still, it wasn't until I really dove in and started to learn about the Medicine, its principles, and its properties. I was able to understand it on the level of understanding that I needed at the time. When I did my research on the Medicine, I learned that it had regenerative properties for the brain and for me with my football days and having this fear of having all the concussions, the brain trauma, and the CTE things were the reason that I really decided to dive in.

OMTimes: What were your expectations and intentions before your experience? What did you envision it would be the result of your Inner Involvement with Ayahuasca? Did you feel in any way frustrated with your first experiences with it? Kerry Rhodes: Speaking about expectations, I didn't have any. I really didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that I was going into the unknown, and in the past, the unknown really scared me.

On top of that, I was in a very toxic relationship. I wanted to really dive in and see what traumas and what things were controlling me and putting me in a position to attract that type of relationship. So, I needed to dive deep and look inward, not for the sake of anything but being more spiritually aware and open to really seeing myself, flaws, and all.

that even with the unknown when I commit to something, I commit all the way, and there was no difference when I tried Ayahuasca. I dove straight into the experience with full commitment. My intention overall was to really look at myself and be honest with myself and really get to the bottom of who I was as an individual; as a person to really see the work that I needed to do, to raise my vibration, and really not judge what I was going to see. So, I'll say my intentions were to leave there a more empathetic, more compassionate, more complete spiritual being, and I would say my first experience with that was a success. It was a lifechanging moment for me. OMTimes: I do not believe that consciousness is generated by the brain. And believe that the brain is more of a receiver of consciousness�. ~Graham Hancock. Does this affirmation resonate as an accurate statement to you based on your experience with Ayahuasca? OMTIMES

Kerry Rhodes: The brain is a receiver for sure. It is valuable obviously for life here on earth, in this body. Still, beyond that level of operation, there are so many beautiful messages that we can receive spiritually and outside of that normal functioning process that our comprehension through coding and life experiences can stunt. I don't let information and downloads miss me anymore after my experiences with this beautiful Medicine. OMTimes: Tell us a little about your purification process before your Ceremony. At any point in the process, did you feel vulnerable? Kerry Rhodes: During the purification process, yes, I followed it to the T. I wanted to get the ultimate experience. Like I said, I dove in. I did everything the right way to honor Medicine and experience. I was vulnerable the whole time. The entire process was new to me. Putting myself on a diet to meet the dietary restrictions and to be open to the things that we're going to be shown to me and stripping off my ego left me so vulnerable.

But that was the beauty of my process, vulnerability. I was humbled so much by the Medicine and its power and the fact that I have no control of it, it was so much healing and so much beauty in that for me. OMTimes: Did you face some of the mystical surprises (some say Mother Ayahuasca sometimes manifests) during your Ayahuasca Ceremony? Kerry Rhodes:Mother ayahuasca mystical properties were on full blast for me. I experienced so much of her beauty and power. I saw everything from just prisms and lights and colors, to me laying on a mat outside in the Amazon flipping the pages of past lives. (literally) Seeing people that I had concerns or questions about their existence in my life being shown to me through those pages, and seeing that, and seeing those persons being a part of my life in all those chapters, helped me to see that my experiencing them on a 2D level was necessary.

After that initial shock or feeling that I had, the rest of the journey, that problem never arose. It was funny to me after because, before this, I had never put any foreign substance in my body, besides occasional alcohol. OMTimes: In many indigenous Cultures, Ayahuasca is seen as a female spirit, a guide with maternal qualities. Did you have this direct experience during your sacred Ceremony?

And the beauty of that and then knowing that even though what we as humans may call mistakes, it was all essential to me being the person that I ultimately want to be. It's so much beauty in that. OMTimes: Some say that the journey of discovery with Ayahuasca can be intense and very tough. Many times, the ego fights these experiences and sensations. Did you have problems surrendering to the moment? Kerry Rhodes: I had one moment of trying to fight it, and it was the first feeling of things not being in my control under the Medicine. There was an initial almost like buzzing sound, and then the clock on the wall started to move; then, I started seeing these colors and shapes and prisms, and all I can remember saying is oh shit! Then I took a deep breath to calm myself and told myself To surrender.

Kerry Rhodes: Ayahuasca is definitely a female spirit. For me, personally, my journey was one to reconnect with my feminine side.Mother reminded me how beautiful that side of me is and having the opportunity to reconnect with that side was everything. In life, everything is about balance, and for so long, I was only using my masculine energy to be successful in my occupation, but when I look back before Ayahuasca, my ability to connect emotionally was challenging. So now, my everyday practice includes always connecting with my feminine energy and my masculine energy, and to make sure that all of me, all of my being, is in alignment. OMTimes: Did you feel that your transformational experience with (Yage) interfered or even change your relationship with your worldview and Religion? Did you awaken to new realities you did not have access to before? Kerry Rhodes: Yage woke me up to new possibilities and hopes for the world. Everything stems from a love for me, and the communication and sharing and openness That I'm comfortable sharing now with people is so beautiful.


It did change some relationships that I had prior, but I do know that it was all for the best. There are a lot of things and relationships that we hold on to for too long, and I know that. Those moments are teaching lessons for us if we allow them to be, and I believe yage will show you if you are open and ready for the teachings. My life, my beliefs, have changed for the better because of it. OMTimes: Tell us a little about your connections with Taita Juanito. What was your first impression, and through your many healing sessions, what did you personally learn from him?

Kerry Rhodes: I believe in life that everything is a process. I think there are single acts in life that can change the course of your life, but even with that, things have to continue. Wherever or whatever you choose to put energy into, that's up to you. Ayahuasca and myself, I knew that where I started with the Medicine and where I ended after the Medicine was going to be a process. And that for me was where the beauty lay. I commit, and I will pour my heart and soul into what I believe. I believe in Ayahuasca's healing properties, and everything is a process. So, it worked out for me.

Kerry Rhodes: Taita Juanito is the most loving man I've ever met in my life. His gentle but very in control manner that he operates from is so soothing. I personally felt so comfortable in his presence, and I knew deep down, from some source that I've never felt before, that I was going to be OK. He's brilliant, he's charismatic, and the undeniable support that he had for all of us was magical. I genuinely love him. The honesty that he shared with me from the first moment we met was one of the reasons I was so comfortable with embarking on that journey. He said one thing to me that I will always remember, and he said this, "this ceremony this drink is only the start of your life, you have to continue to do the work after that. Ayahuasca was not going to be this magic cure." That showed me how humble he was and that he was not there to take all the credit. That was beautiful to me. OMTimes: In the Documentary, we noticed that you focused your Inner work, the intention of this sacred connection to Ayahuasca as a process, not as a single event. Why was that? OMTIMES

OMTimes: After doing this documentary, which is extraordinarily rich in knowledge and information about Ancient Healing practices, would you say that you believe that the Plant Kingdom (Flora) has its own Consciousness? Farzin Toussi: Not being a scientist, I can only take my best attempt of what I understand from my journey, but I think that plants are intelligent and have the ability to communicate with each other, but I don't believe they possess their own Consciousness. It seems to me that energy is needed, in the form of electricity and I am not sure that plants are sophisticated enough to generate the energy needed. OMTimes: How were your personal interactions with Taita Juanito? Farzin Toussi: My interactions with Taita Juanito have been nothing short of phenomenal. I think he is by far the purest human being I have met. By that I mean he is all love. I really don't know how else to describe him. OMTIMES

OMTimes: Would it be fair to affirm that one of the reasons that Ayahuasca as Medicine is not socially and openly accepted today is because the allopathic pharmaceutical companies have not figured out yet, how to minimize, if not eliminate the spiritual aspect of this healing experience, transforming it into one more Medicine to be used and commercialized? What is your take on this statement? Farzin Toussi: I agree with this statement. For example, I have read that some have been trying to do a version of Ayahuasca that eliminates vomiting. Purging is for many not just symbolic, but healing. I think that other psychedelics might be better suited for commercialization. I think that this particular medicine is so powerful in it's ceremonial setting that I hope that big pharma does not succeed in creating a commercialized version of this medicine.

There's no doubt that when you look at the big picture, it takes your breath away. But go in deep into the canyons? It's a whole different story.

OMTimes: How Important is it to have Ayahuasca (Yage) cooked in a sacred way, by good-willed intended people with good hearts, and with complete supervision of Spirit? Do these care and respect attitude infuse the brew with its magical and mystical elements? Farzin Toussi: I think cooking the brew with good intention, as it is called for by tradition, is very important. The brew is the conduit between the ceremony participants and the spirit world, and the good intentions behind the process will ensure that the healing is held in light. I believe the magical and mystical elements are the effect of the amalgamation of your mind and the spirit world. OMTimes: The Author and thought leader Graham Hancock says: "I think it's obvious that the psychedelics are demonized and illegalized by our society because somewhere in our society is controlling minds that realize that these substances have the potential, have the power to unpick the controlling hierarchy." Do you believe it to be the case with the use of Ayahuasca? Can you comment on this?


THE

MEDICINE Farzin Toussi: I absolutely agree with Mr. Hancock. I believe that anything like Ayahuasca that can raise one's consciousness or frequency is a threat to the status quo. I don't think there is anything more dangerous to the status quo than the majority of the populace vibrating on a higher frequency. The entire system is set up to have us operating on a lower frequency in order to have control, and I tend to believe that they (whoever the "they" are) know of the potential of Ayahuasca and other psychedelics for that matter. OMTimes: Do you believe that the experience with Ayahuasca can reset and individual's life, helping heal a vast array of social and personal psychological/emotional problems through the review of their reality? In other words, sending them back to the moment of their birth? Farzin Toussi: I can say from personal experience, and observation of others that Ayahuasca can reset one's life and heal all sorts of traumas. They say that the medicine knows what you need." It was a hard concept for me to understand, but his medicine goes to the source and helps you move forward with your life. OMTimes: Personally, how do you think that the serendipitous combination between these two plants occurred in these healing practices, regarding that their interaction causes the bestcombined effect of a natural DMT? Why these two, from an uncountable amount of combinations? Do you have a theory about it? Was it trial and error, or a mystical explanation through Divine Guidance?

Farzin Toussi: This question in my opinion is one of the more intriguing mysteries of Ayahuasca. I don't think that it was possible for the tribes to come up with this Specific medicine through trial and error of over 100,000 plant species in the Amazon. When it is said that the spirit world gave them this combination, I tend to believe it, as there does not seem to be another explanation. They were guided.
