Donny & Marie
Speak Their Minds They have a hit show together on the Las Vegas Strip, but Donny and Marie Osmond’s old sibling rivalry is still simmering. Marie came in third place on the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars, but bragging rights belong to Donny, who won the show’s ninth season. Now, Donny and Marie Osmond open up on the important things in life such as Elvis, time travel, the Powerpuff Girls and, yes, even Justin Bieber. If I wasn’t an entertainer I’d be... Donny: Out of a job. Marie: Sane! The oddest thing I’ve seen happen in Las Vegas was... Donny: When it snowed on the Strip. Marie: When the Flamingo wrapped their building with a giant photo of Donny and Marie. I guess “Sin City” is becoming “Sincere City.” In my next life I want to come back as... Donny: Elvis. Marie: A spirit. After thousands of hours spent on plane rides and bus tours, it would be great to just “appear” wherever I needed to be next. If I could trade places with anyone for 24 hours it would be... Donny: Me. Then I could see myself as others see me. What a mind trip! Marie: My teacup Maltese dog, Lola. Imagine, having someone feed you and massage your head all day long while you sleep. Ah, what a life! My most recurring dream is... Donny: A nightmare of dancing with Marie onstage. Oh, wait! I guess I’m living the dream. Marie: That I could actually get enough sleep to have a dream. My favorite meal is... Donny: Something edible. Marie: Ice cream. What? Dairy is in the food pyramid. If I could be any superhero I’d be... Donny: Captain Purple Marie: The Powerpuff Girls—all three of them. It would be great for me as a multitasking single mom. If I owned a time machine I’d... Donny: Go back and forth in time, duh! Marie: Never be late again. The person I would want to play me in a movie about my life would be... Donny: Justin Bieber. Marie: Kathy Griffin. I know she does an imitation of the way I laugh in her comedy act, which is hysterical.
12
My favorite hangout in Las Vegas is... Donny: Anywhere in the shade. Marie: Home with my kids. When I order from the room service menu at 3 a.m. I get... Donny: Heartburn. Marie: Frustrated because they don’t deliver to my home. The one thing I’ve done in Las Vegas that I’d rather forget is... Donny: I don’t remember. Marie: Do you really think I’d tell anyone? VP
The ribbing between these two sassy siblings continues onstage, Tuesday through Saturday, in The Flamingo Showroom.

CONTRIBUTORS The Names and Faces Behind the Words and Photos
Christie Moeller | Stylist | “Poptopia” and “La Femme Fatale” With 1960s-inspired styles and a dash of kitsch, Christie Moeller helped bring Barbie to life in “Poptopia,” our fashion spread in a colorful suite at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino—decorated by one of her idols, Jonathan Adler.
“Once I saw the suite, I knew we had to go in a Barbie-esque direction. After all,” she jokes, “Adler and Barbie go together better than, well...Ken and Barbie!” Switching gears for our jewelry spread, “La Femme Fatale,” Moeller went for a more dramatic and mysterious look. “It’s all about jewels,” she says. Moeller’s clients range from celebrities to fashion publications and advertising campaigns. You can view her fashion blog at icanstyleu.com/blog.
Jerry Metellus | Photographer | “Poptopia”
john reed
“Working with Brittany was a dream,” Jerry Metellus says of our “Poptopia” model. “Her ability to embody the ideas presented to her, along with shooting in such a colorful, unique and inspirational environment, made my job magically easy.” While his early fascination with cameras led to his chosen career, Metellus draws on his background as an international stage actor, dancer and makeup artist to bring a “total concept” to his photography. A jokester on the set, Metellus says he enjoys “messing with people, entertaining folks and providing free therapy (for now…One day, they will all have to pay!)” jerrymetellus.com
Robert John Kley | Photographer | “La Femme Fatale” Fashion and lifestyle photographer Robert John Kley started out as a musician on the East Coast, playing in bands that toured with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Fuel. So imagine his reaction when he stepped into the Napoleon Suite at Paris Las Vegas and saw a baby grand piano. Of course, he gravitated toward it and started clicking away. “The Paris suite has a
very old vintage feeling to it,” Kley explains. “I wanted the photographs to capture that feel with a bit of modern style.” These days, Kley travels between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and he tells us he actually enjoys the drive. “It clears my head.” rjkphoto.com
Shep Morgan | Writer | “The Fighter” Mark Wahlberg told award-winning writer Shep Morgan that bringing The Fighter to the screen was probably as tough as some of the bruising bouts faced by Micky Ward, the boxer whom Wahlberg portrays in the film. One obstacle was casting the pivotal role of Ward’s drug-addicted
half-brother, Dickie Eklund. “I really wanted Matt Damon,” Wahlberg says, “but he passed. I talked with Eminem because I thought he’d add a real edge, but it just didn’t work out. Then Brad Pitt said yes, only to change his mind. Finally, we got lucky with Christian Bale.” Then he adds with a laugh, “But while I was gaining weight to play Micky, Christian lost a lot. He ended up really emaciated and I got a little worried. I was like, ‘Christian, you’d better eat, man, you’re messing with your health.’ I don’t think I could have gone that far. But it’s the way he works.”

Jonathan Adler’s Sweet Suite Design Guru Goes Glam at Planet Hollywood
Jonathan Adler isn’t one to shy away from color. His dramatic interior designs explode with intensity and are typically accented by fantastic shapes and vibrant patterns. And his Mega Suites, which cover more than 3,000 square feet on the 50th and 51st floors of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, are no exception. The whimsical look there starts with the entryway’s metallic silverand-gray wallpaper. Splashes of color come in the form of cherry-red Murano-glass chandeliers, lime-green velvet couches and orange bedroom dressers. A potter by trade, Adler added some of his signature work to the space, including several Dora Maar Muse multi-face surrealist vases. Vegas Player recently caught up with the Top Design judge, to talk about his work for Planet Hollywood and for Barbie, a client he says was a real doll: p h o t o g r a p h s c o u r t e s y o f j o n at h a n a d l e r
In designing the Mega Suites at Planet Hollywood, what inspired you? Planet Hollywood is such a fab brand, so I wanted to create the kind of cinematic glamour you would associate with Planet Hollywood. Think Sharon Stone in Casino meets Auntie Mame meets Lenny Kravitz. Was there a certain look or era you tried to bring out in the design? The over-the-top glamour of Vegas in the sixties and seventies. So decadent. After all, it is Vegas. Did you consider that when designing the space? Of course! You can, I’ve heard, do no wrong in Vegas—so I applied that to my decorating as well. You also designed Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. How did you approach that project? Barbie was a dream client. She’s all about glamour and fun and, luckily, there was no mean husband around trying to tone down the vibe and rein in the budget. What are you most proud of about the Dream House? That people are still excited about it. VP 28

The Defenders We’re hoping you don’t need an attorney in Vegas, but if you do, the hilarious fictional team from the law firm of Morelli & Kaczmarek might be someone to consider—if just for the laughs and courtroom hijinks alone. Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell star as outrageous Las Vegas lawyers in the new CBS legal series, The Defenders, which filmed some scenes at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. But Belushi revealed to reporters at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour that Vegas is all business. “I go [to Las Vegas], and I perform with my band, The Sacred Hearts, and have a nice dinner and play roulette for twenty minutes and go home. Oils Nourish the Body, Soften the Skin
Body wraps are one of the most pampering of spa experiences— a nurturing detoxifying treatment perfect for healing tired, dehydrated skin. They also are beneficial, as they draw out toxins, reduce water retention and relax muscles. Body wraps maximize the benefits of the active ingredients in products, extracting the calming, detoxifying or healing properties. Here are the steps to smooth, healthy skin: • Body wraps start by sweeping with a dry body brush, to promote the activity of the lymph system. This helps the body release toxins, carrying impurities away from healthy cells (quite helpful if you’ve been up all night sipping a martini…or two). • Next, the therapist will exfoliate the skin by using a body scrub, possibly made from jojoba beads. This gently removes dead skin cells and allows the oils to penetrate the skin better. • A healing oil such as grape seed oil is then massaged all over the body. The client is wrapped with hot towels and/ or a sheet, allowing for ultimate absorption into the skin. Shannon Stringert, spa manager at Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace, explains that Qua’s signature body wrap— the Ayurvedic Journey—incorporates an herbal head-to-toe body mask with an Abyhanga massage. This type of massage focuses on longer strokes around the joints to increase circulation and reduce inflammation. Following the massage, the client is wrapped in hot towels and a sheet for up to 20 minutes. The experience concludes with the therapist performing a Shirodhara treatment, “slowly pouring warm oil on the forehead which trickles down the scalp,” says Stringert. “This opens intuition and calms the nervous system.” VP

Once a simple comfort food, the hamburger has undergone a makeover. Now it’s a stylish, in-vogue meal with toppings that often range from foie gras to Maine lobster. Kerry Simon is getting in on the act—and he knows a thing or two about burgers. One of the nation’s top culinary talents, Kerry Simon beat Cat Cora on Iron Chef America’s “Battle Hamburger.”
Photograph by Robert John Kley
Opposite: Chef Kerry Simon stands by a replica of a Soviet-era propaganda poster at his burger and vodka bar, KGB: Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers, at Harrah’s Las Vegas.
Chef Kerry Simon is “a cheddar-cheese type of guy.” You might not assume that at first. After all, this chef/restaurateur has been nicknamed the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chef by Rolling Stone and he’s won a Best New Restaurant award from Esquire for Simon Kitchen + Bar. Once an aspiring musician, he’s risen to become one of the nation’s top culinary talents. Simon beat Cat Cora on Iron Chef America, a victory that had foodie mouths dropping open all over the nation because, well, he did it with a burger. And let’s face it: He has great, rock-star-style hair. So you’d be forgiven for thinking that Simon is some really rare, truffle-studded, whiskey-infused, raw-milk, triple-aged-in-a-bat-cave, blue-green veiny cheese type of guy.
At one time, in fact, he was at least a little bit closer to that kind of gourmand. “I can remember really loving blue-cheese burgers, and that’s what I would have all the time,” Simon reflects while talking about his new restaurant, KGB: Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers at Harrah’s Las Vegas. “But…I changed. [Now] I tend to eat the four-cheese burger a lot.” Simon notes, “I think it’s very personal what type of burger you enjoy and what your condiments are.” That said, “You want the condiments to all work together.” Thus his selection of toppings, which range from the homey short-rib sloppy Joe to the eclectic vodka-cured pepper pickles to the appellative Russian dressing. In addition to cheeses and toppings, KGB offers a variety of buns and burgers, from natural Angus beef to heritage turkey. “The bun is important,” Simon says. “That’s another of those things like cheeses, whether you like a sesame bun or whole wheat or a brioche”—all of which are choices at KGB. And “the quality of the beef is the key to a good burger. We use organic, grass-fed beef.” But ultimately, Simon admits, when it comes to creating the perfect burger, “there is not one thing. There is a combination of things. I can give you a great piece of beef, [but] if you don’t cook it right or season it right [with salt and pepper], it won’t matter.” And that holds true whether you’re chomping on the double cheeseburger (twin patties, American cheese, caramelized onions, sliced pickles, applewood-smoked bacon, Russian dressing and a white bun) at KGB in Las Vegas or gnawing on a lopsided poolside burger in your own backyard, courtesy of your spouse—who may or may not be a cheddar-cheese kind of cook. Selleria Watch with stainless steel face ($750) and blue Tejus Lizard Strap ($125)
by Danielle Cohen
Designer Profile: FENDI Edoardo and Adele Fendi couldn’t have imagined in 1925, when they first began their handbag and fur workshop in Rome, that—85 years later—their name would be synonymous with high fashion and elegant style the world over. The family business (all five of their daughters Yellow customworked for the company in the mid-1940s) became a global fashion made Selleria Peekaboo handbag icon, revolutionized time and again by one of the most respected fashion talents, Karl Lagerfeld; he has steered Fendi’s ready-to-wear and fur lines like no other could for the last 45 years, while Silvia Venturini Fendi has been responsible for accessories and small leather goods since the mid-1980s.
Beige jacket ($7,660) and dress ($7,320) with mink and lamb leather
Blue satin Fendishire shoes ($770)
The brand expanded over the decades, first introducing ready-to-wear apparel in 1977. Currently, it also boasts men’s, footwear, eyewear, timepieces, home furnishings and much more. With nearly 200 boutiques in more than two dozen countries around the world, Fendi continues to pioneer trend, craftsmanship and innovative platforms. The unique CRAZY CARATS timepiece collection launching this holiday season blurs the lines between fine jewelry, timepiece technology and fashionforward accessory. The polished stainless-steel band is inspired by the bracelet of Silvia Venturini Fendi’s grandmother. The case of the innovative Swiss-made design features two crowns: The first adjusts the time; the other rotates diamonds, sapphires and multicolored topaz in three different settings.
Olive-green Classico No. 1 handbag ($2,300)
Fendi’s Classico line, inspired by the Sixties’ Roman Dolce Vita and Seventies’ international jet-set scene, includes six pieces of carpincio leather or logoed fabric handbags and luggage, which can be personalized with initials. Within the Selleria collection, Fendi’s most devoted clients can own a piece celebrating the brand’s craftsmanship and personalize every detail: from high-quality leathers, exotic skins—such as crocodile and ostrich—to precious furs such as mink and orylag. The handbags can also be customized in 37 varieties of colors with refined details such as suede, gold or nappa lining. Presented exquisitely, these made-to-order creations come with a personalized letter from Silvia Venturini Fendi. VP

The Fighter Mark Wahlberg Steps Up to His Dream Role: the Boxer Who Inspired Him To Achieve Mark Wahlberg’s climb to the top in Hollywood got an extra boost when he was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor in The Departed. In addition to holding his own with heavyweights Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, Wahlberg found new respect behind the camera by co-producing several HBO series, including the Emmy®-winning hit Entourage and the acclaimed Boardwalk Empire. Now, he’s putting everything he has into a real-life role that he’s dreamed about: stepping into the ring in The Fighter to play welterweight champ “Irish” Micky Ward.

CELEBRITY PORTRAIT Hollywood Heavyweight
“Micky was a local hero that we all idolized,” Wahlberg says of Ward, who shares his Boston-area roots and fought to glory in the 1980s—a few years before Wahlberg found fame as rapper Marky Mark and then in his breakout role in Boogie Nights. “There weren’t too many success stories where I was from,” he says. “Nobody had really made it out. So what Micky accomplished had a personal impact on me and what I believed was possible.”
Saved by the Bell
Wahlberg is the first to admit that he almost missed his own ticket out. “I was arrested for everything from stealing cars to doing drugs,” he says, “and when I ended up in jail, one of my parents had to get on a train or a bus to come and bail me out. I remember my mom picked me up, and the conversation we had on the way home was about what I was going to do with my life, and that people actually did care about me, and that I was hurting myself. She was in tears and I think the light began to dawn and maybe I realized that I could be something.” That’s why the 39-year-old actor was drawn to Ward’s struggle to leave his blue-collar roots behind and make it to the top in the grueling world of prize-fighting. “I want people to feel inspired and realize that if Micky can come from where he did and accomplish so much, they can too with hard work and determination,” Wahlberg says. “Micky had more heart than anyone else. That’s really what it’s about. It’s all about heart.” Then he adds with a grin. “I’m also a huge fight fan. I fought a bit when I was younger and I’ve seen every boxing movie ever made. Some of the greatest ones like Rocky and Raging Bull, I’ve watched like thirty times. But the fight scenes in a lot of them weren’t as realistic as what we wanted to put on the screen. To show it, you’ve got to get in there and take it.” Wahlberg, who also produced the film, pushed himself to the limit to portray Ward. “I trained for four-and-a-half years and it got really intense,” he reveals. “I ended up losing thirty pounds. I would be in the gym by 4:30 in the morning and I was probably working out ten hours a day. Me and Micky have become friends over the past ten years. He helped me when I was working on my punches and was on the set for the entire filming. “I didn’t want to look like an actor who is pretty good in the ring,” he continues. “I wanted to look like a guy who could win the welterweight title. We hired real fighters to box with me and used the cameramen who shoot all the fights for HBO Sports. It’s amazing how real those scenes are; you feel like you’re watching archival footage.” Wahlberg may look convincing taking punches and unleashing his version of Ward’s devastating trademark left hook, he insists, but “anybody who has seen me in person knows that I’m not that tough. On the other hand, I’m not going to let anybody physically harm me. If they come after me, I’m going to defend myself. That’s the way I was brought up.”
Alternately billed as “Micky” or “Mickey” during his long career, Ward experienced a pivotal turn during a Caesars Palace championship bout reenacted in The Fighter. The event set the stage for a series of mega-showdowns between Ward and Arturo Gatti, sponsored by Bally’s and Caesars in Atlantic City. Ward-Gatti III, at Boardwalk Hall in June 2003, earned Ring Magazine “Fight of the Year” honors.

As for putting himself in the middle of the action in films like Invincible and Shooter, he says, “I took my share of hard knocks, but now it’s like, ‘Hey, guys, I have small children.’ When I didn’t have kids, I was a kamikaze—I didn’t care. Now, I’ve given my motorcycle away. And you won’t see me jumping out of planes or off buildings anymore. I’ve been very, very lucky because I’ve had a bunch of close calls. Let’s be honest. I’m not going to be doing Rambo at fifty-five.” But it’s likely he’ll still be producing after his success on the perennially popular HBO series Entourage and the recently debuted Boardwalk Empire, co-produced by Martin Scorsese, who also directed the pilot. “I helped get Marty on board,” he says, “and he became involved in every single detail. I definitely made my contributions as a producer, but I felt a little jealous that I wasn’t playing one of those great roles because the characters are so rich, they’re so well written.” More meaningful to Wahlberg than any character he’s played is being a father to his four children—daughters Ella and Grace and sons Michael and Brendan—with his wife, Rhea Durham. “When I was getting ready for The Fighter, I actually built a boxing ring in my backyard,” he reveals. “My kids loved it. They’d get in there and they’d put the gloves on and tell me to get on my knees and put my hands behind my back and they’d take shots at me. I spend all my free time with my family.” Looking back on his own troubled adolescence, Wahlberg admits he wants to help his kids avoid the pitfalls that could have led him in another direction. “I just want to be there every step of the way,” he says. “I want to guide them, protect them and hopefully influence them in making good decisions. I want to try to teach them how to avoid making those mistakes that may have an impact on the rest of their lives. Believe me, that’s a big part of my faith—getting on my knees every day and asking for the strength to be a good father, as well as a good husband.” When Wahlberg visits Vegas, he hits the links. “My favorite thing to do in Vegas is play golf,” he says. “There are so many great courses there. I fell in love with golf. It’s a dream sport. You can go out there and just relax. I’m so addicted to it, it’s ridiculous.” Wahlberg, whose recent performances have ranged from the stricken father of a murdered daughter in The Lovely Bones to an uptight cop in the wacky comedy The Other Guys, reveals he’s keeping his future options open. “The more mature I become, the more relaxed I become, and the easier things get,” he says. “There are certain things obviously that are out of your control and accepting that is a big part of it. It makes life a lot more enjoyable. I was always flying around in fifth gear and now I’m down in second and everything is good.” VP

COCKTAIL CULTURE The View from Behind the Bar
Top Mixologists Shake Up Old Notions of Libation
photographs by Robert John Kley
And when there’s a celebration or a holiday, it’s the job of these “spirit lifters” to “create a cocktail specifically for that moment,” notes Perales, the beverage specialist at Caesars Palace. Combine all these elements, and the results are often as surprising as they are delightful. For Perales, fruits combined with spices and herbs are the key to seasonal success. For his “Hot Apple Pie” drink, he toasts what he calls “holiday spices”—cinnamon, star anise, vanilla bean and cloves—in a pan, then spoons in applesauce made with fresh mint. After pouring the concoction into a glass, he adds fresh-squeezed orange and tangerine juices and Glenmorangie single-malt scotch before double-straining it and garnishing with mint. For another brew, Perales creates his own limoncello with Belvedere-infused lemons, and then stirs up a martini of aged tequila and Belvedere Citrus, toasting a limoncello meringue to top it off. For his “Hot Buttered Rum,” Bobby G, the multiple award-winning Master Mixologist for Beam Global Wine & Spirits, makes a “batter” from cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and other brown spices. The heated cocktail, which includes Cruzan Single Barrel Estate or Cruzan Dark Rum, complements a host of fall-to-winter holiday

Flair bartender turned mixologist, Eddie Perales says when it comes to cocktail creation you want that “wow factor.” Well versed in molecular mixology, his latest conception is “cooking cocktails.”

It helps to have elegantly textured barware in order to make and serve your drinks, such as the gold/amber Mastaba utensils, martini shaker, tray and ice bucket with tongs from Kim Seybert. This touch of beauty no doubt helps when it comes to what Perales says is arguably the most difficult aspect of these recipes: “Shake hard and with a smile.”

Like many contemporary cooks, today’s savvy bar chefs craft their creations according to season and region. Las Vegas-based mixologists Eddie Perales, Bobby “G” Gleason and Tony Abou-Ganim know they also have to stay ahead of trends, choosing liquors that might have escaped the attention of their brethren.

Cocktails That Cook
Tony Abou-Ganim wrote the book—literally— on cocktail creation. The Modern Mixologist: Contemporary Classic Cocktails contains dozens of recipes for entertaining guests.
POMME & CIRCUMSTANCE
Made from tree-ripened apples grown in the Shenandoah Valley, Laird’s Applejack is believed to be America’s oldest native distilled spirit. This apple-on-apple beverage is rich in flavor.

2 ounces Laird’s Applejack 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lemon juice 1 ounce ginger syrup 2 ounces cloudy, unfiltered apple juice Chilled Vernors ginger ale In a mixing glass, add Laird’s, fresh lemon juice, ginger syrup and cloudy apple juice; shake with ice until well blended. Strain into an ice-filled goblet and top with chilled ginger ale. Stir to mix and garnish with a fan of apple slices.
Hot Apple Pie Cocktail
In making this holiday spirit, Perales toasted star anise, cinnamon, cloves and vanilla bean in a pan before adding lemon juice and applesauce. The hot ingredients were then poured into an ice-filled glass with orange juice and Glenmorangie scotch.

Bobby “G” Gleason Bobby G helped develop drink menus for some of the swankiest lounges in Las Vegas. He says mixologists are just like chefs experimenting with ingredients to create innovative cocktails at the bar.

gatherings and is ideal for serving until spring (especially when March decides to come in like the proverbial lion). To that end, Bobby G recommends mixing up a large batch of the batter to have on hand. At the other end of the spectrum, The Modern Mixologist author Abou-Ganim prefers to let his spirit do the flavoring in his wittily labeled Pomme & Circumstance cocktail, which highlights Laird’s Applejack. “With the first sip of Applejack,” he says, “I am reminded of the coming of fall, the change of seasons, a nip in the air, the leaves on the trees turning color, and apples being pressed for cider and baked into pies…a fire will soon glow to warm us as we enjoy a libation, reflect and look forward to the coming of spring.” Still, though drinking these cocktails may be the easier job, the spicy, fruity and oh-so-seasonal aromas floating up while you savor them will trigger a giant dose of holiday happiness, regardless of the time of year. BEST BETS The Dicemen Cometh
Craps Crackerjack
Inside Guide To Becoming a
We Roll Dice with the Experts
“A dice game is much like life, just faster decisions,” explains Dave Tannen, director of table games at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. “There is nothing more exciting in a casino than a hot craps game.” Portrayed in numerous movies (who can forget the scene in Casino with Sharon Stone leaning over the rail), this fast-paced game may seem a bit intimidating but it’s rather simple, and statistically one of the best games in the casino to play. Craps is also wrapped in superstitions. To debunk the myths, we wrangled three experts to set the record straight.
THE EXPERTS
Mark Kelly Vice President of Table Games for Harrah’s, Imperial Palace, Flamingo, O’Sheas and Bill’s
Bill Zimmer Vice President of Casino Operations, Bally’s, Paris and Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino
Dave Tannen Director of Table Games, Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino

Beginner’s Luck
Caesars Palace has the highest craps limits in the world—allowing players to place $50,000 line bets. Newcomers find $5 craps games at Imperial Palace, O’Sheas and Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, while the Flamingo and Harrah’s generally offer $10 games. Bill’s has free craps lessons at 10:30 a.m. daily.
Bring the Noise
What’s the best advice for someone new to the game?
Why is everyone always shouting at the table?
If you can attend a craps class it will help you understand the game. If not, find a slow game and tell the dealers you want to learn how to play. You don’t have to know all the nuances of the game to have a great time.
If they are shouting the dice are HOT and they are winning money. If you can find a spot to squeeze in, that might be a great place to play.
At your first live game, start at a low-limit table during a time when the casino isn’t busy. I tell beginners to stick with the Pass line until they feel comfortable with the flow of the game.
There is the excitement and anticipation of seeing the dice tumble and waiting to see what number is rolled.
The game seems very confusing at first, but how hard can it be? Mark, Bill and I understand it.
Dice is the most exciting casino game. After playing blackjack, it will be as if you are going from a country road to a super highway.

Lady Luck
The Streaker
Are women luckier at craps than men?
Is it considered bad luck to disturb a shooter on a streak?
Do the odds change if the shooter keeps rolling the dice?
Is it considered bad luck when a die leaves the table?
Women are always good to have around our crap games.
We train our supervisors, servers and managers to avoid interrupting a shooter. You wouldn’t have interrupted Picasso when he was painting a masterpiece.
The odds never change, but we have seen examples where a shooter rolls the dice for a very long time. All I know is that “hot dice are mighty nice!”
The old timers used to say, “Die on the floor, seven out the door,” inferring bad luck when they end up off the table. Of course the dice have no idea where they went.
The movies help promote this myth since almost every scene of a hot dice table has a woman shooting.
A host or manager knows to never approach a hot shooter during the middle of a roll. It’s Casino 101.
The math is simple, but I’ve seen some long rolls that defy objective calculations. I just smile, shake my head and cheer for the shooter.
Many players will immediately yell, “Same Die,” if one goes off the table in hopes of continuing their good fortune with the same set of dice.
I believe Frank Sinatra’s song, “Luck Be a Lady,” says it all.
Superstition always puts a hot shooter in the zone and folks don’t want to break the lucky streak. Cheering is the way to go. Nothing brings people together like a common number that needs to be rolled.
The next number is always unknown, regardless of what was just thrown.
Players feel that dice get hot and most shooters want the same dice back in play. It is all about mojo or luck, which makes the game so much fun.

The golf course, you see, is Smokey’s second sanctuary—the stage being the first. “I’ve been golfing for thirty years,” he explains, adding that the game has taught him “patience and discipline.” Then he admits what we all suspect, “I know a lot more about singing than I do golf. Golf is still a mystery to me.” The golf course may be the only place where the Grammy® Award winner slows life down these days. He toured all summer and recently released a new 12-song album entitled, Now and Then, available exclusively at Cracker Barrel stores. The CD features six live versions of his well-known classics and six songs from his 2009 album, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. “I am so blessed to still be doing what I absolutely love,” Smokey says by phone, a half hour before stepping onstage in Mableton, Georgia. “During the first days of Motown, it was just the five of us. We wanted to make music for the world.” You don’t have to look far to find Smokey’s musical influence here on the Strip. The legendary singer helped bring Australian vocal group Human Nature to Imperial Palace after meeting them when they were recording an album with some Motown greats. “They sang [“The Tears of a Clown”] to me a cappella and it blew me out of the studio,” he recalls. “They were incredible. I knew right away they’d be a hit in Las Vegas.” VP
