CONTRIBUTORS The Names and Faces Behind the Words and Photos
Jen Karetnick | Writer | “Chef Richard’s Fare” and “Poolside Punch” “I’ve always loved Chef Michel Richard’s recipes and books. They’re so whimsical, yet so easy to follow, without the molecular tomfoolery that a lot of modern cooking calls for today,” writer Jen Karetnick explains. A Miami dining critic, Jen is writing a book, Romancing the Mango: Recipes from the Obsessed. She interviewed Chef Richard and wrote about cool cabana cocktails for this issue. She advises, “Everything at a Vegas pool is eye candy. Your cocktail should definitely be, too.” Check out more of Jen’s writing at jenkaretnick.com.
Robert John Kley | Photographer | “Candied Kaleidoscope” and “Lucid Dreams” Fashion and lifestyle photographer Robert John Kley was a kid in a candy store—literally—when we assigned him to capture fashion and jewels inside Sugar Factory American Brasserie. His images just came to life on the page and popped with color. Robert also photographed some rather colorful characters: Absinthe host The Gazillionaire and his hilarious, uninhibited sidekick, Penny Pibbets. “It’s one of my favorite photos. They both have amazing personalities.” See more of Robert’s work on his Web site: rjkphoto.com.
Christie Moeller | Stylist | “Candied Kaleidoscope” “What better way to showcase sweets than with one of the season’s biggest trends? Color!” stylist Christie Moeller says of “Candied Kaleidoscope,” our sugary fashion and jewelry spread. “We created a Crayola cocktail
of vibrant fashions and combined it with candy-like, colorful gems for a stunning Technicolor fashion story.” Christie’s client list ranges from celebrities to fashion RJK Photo
publications and advertising campaigns. You can view her fashion blog at icanstyleu.com/blog.
Shep Morgan | Writer | “‘We Found Doug!’” Justin Bartha told award-winning writer Shep Morgan about the biggest stretch of his career: Holy Rollers, in which he plays a rebellious, drug-dealing Hasidic Jew who leads a kid studying to be a rabbi into a life of crime. “It’s
the baddest guy I’ve ever played—an addict who spirals out of control. I lived above a Hasidic family in L.A. for a couple of years and their wild son was very much an inspiration,” Bartha reveals.
“I loved the chance to show a different side of myself.” Shep interviews and writes about celebrities for a variety of entertainment publications.

Opening Act Our celebrity Welcome
Judging from the way he shakes hands and interacts with guests, and considering he was Mayor of Gotham City in Batman Forever, you’d think Flamingo comedian George Wallace was running for the nonexistent title of “Mayor of the Las Vegas Strip.” But Wallace, who was labeled by one local writer as “The New Mr. Las Vegas,” is just happy to follow in the footsteps of Redd Foxx and Sammy Davis, Jr.— two comedians (Wallace started out as a writer for The Redd Foxx Show) he says helped pave the way for him. “Just think, they had to walk through the kitchen to work and headline in the main showroom. If they were alive today, they would be surprised to know that we’re still going through that same damn kitchen,” he jokes. Here Wallace shares some thoughts on his career, Las Vegas and pal Jerry Seinfeld, with whom he’s shared a 35-plus year friendship. “I told his wife on [their wedding] day that if he is the same friend to her as he’d been to me, then she’s got a winner and indeed she [does].”
If you were not a comedian, what would you be doing? Look, I knew I wanted to be a comedian before I was born. I didn’t even come out of my mother’s womb until I heard a knock…(‘five minutes, Mr. Wallace’). This is what God put me on this earth for. What was your big break? What big break? I’m still working my ass off. What’s the best thing about living in Las Vegas? Vegas has it all: Fun, food, shows and beautiful people. And some ugly people too. Let’s be fair. No other city on earth has as many top entertainers on the same block. The same can be said for having the greatest restaurants in the world. How would you play tourist in Vegas with 24 hours of free time? My favorite thing to do in Las Vegas is to find me a great seat and people watch, especially at a location like Mon Ami Gabi, which is the best place in town to eat and people watch at the same time.

What’s the strangest thing about Las Vegas? The oddest thing is the world’s largest gift store. The Bonanza General Store, located at Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara. On the marquee, it reads: ‘IF IT’S IN STOCK, WE HAVE IT.’ Damn, why don’t they put up a sign saying, ‘IF YOU PAY FOR IT, IT’S FREE!’ Jerry Seinfeld is a longtime friend. What makes him such a great comic? One thing that makes Jerry funny is discipline. He is so dedicated to the art of comedy. Every comedian in our era [had] the most respect for Jerry, because come hell or high water, he would always stop for an hour each day to write. The difference between a good comedian and a great comedian is that a great comedian always has new jokes. In one Seinfeld episode, you played a doctor distracted every time he heard the song “Witchy Women.” When it comes on now, what happens? I hear ka-ching. Come on, it was only a two-minute scene, but it was the joke of the day. VP
“Make sure you see the ‘Best 10 p.m. show’ at the fabulous Flamingo—The George Wallace ‘I Be Thinkin’ Show.’ You’ll laugh your ass off. When in Vegas, you have a choice: You can go see the Blue Man or you can come see me, the Black Man.”

Captain FantastiC The Virtuoso Elton John Returns for a Second Run at Caesars Palace
Elton John is trading in his Red Piano for a Million Dollar one. In announcing his return to The Colosseum this September, Elton says, “Caesars Palace is just a perfect, idyllic place to play, and the show will be a gargantuan feast of music and imagery.” He continues, “I’m going to have a fabulous piano that Yamaha has been working on for four years, and that’s the reason why the show is called ‘The Million Dollar Piano.’” Elton’s new three-year residency kicks off with a string of 16 shows beginning September 28. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 1999, Elton is a rare entertainer who has conquered music, stage and screen. He has won five Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for the song, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” in the film, The Lion King, and Tony Awards for the musicals The Lion King, Billy Elliot and Aida.
Worldwide, Elton John has sold more than 250 million records and has recorded 35 gold- and 25 platinumselling albums.

TheCéline Voice Dion Focuses on the Music
Bed and Banquet “…heaven on earth and sex on a plate.” —Kate Winslet
Acclaimed Chef Nobu Matsuhisa to Open Hotel-Restaurant at Caesars Palace “You can tell how much fun a city is going to be if Nobu has a restaurant in it.” —Madonna Even before she steps onstage, the crowd is on their feet, roaring in anticipation and chanting “Cé-line, Cé-line, Cé-line.” When she appears and sings Journey’s “Open Arms,” they erupt in cheers. It’s Céline Dion’s first show of her second residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and fans are discovering that this show is different from her theatrical A New Day... production. The focus here is on the beauty of her voice and the music itself, and playing with a 31-piece orchestra nightly “is a dream come true,” Dion says. The show contains less pageantry and is more personal; Dion weaves in segments of her private life, admitting, “I’m an open book. I’ve been an open book all my life.” Home videos of her sons, 10-year-old René-Charles and twins Eddy and Nelson, born in October 2010, prove this, as they play on a video screen in the background while she sings Billy Joel’s “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel).” All of the songs chosen for the show have special meaning to Dion. Before singing Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen,” she points out how the “words are so simple, yet say so much.” Dion, whom Newsweek calls “the biggest act since Elvis,” mixes in her hits while paying tribute to other great artists. She offers a James Bond medley, performs a heartfelt version of Jacques Brel’s “Ne me quitte pas” (“Don’t Leave Me”), and tackles Michael Jackson’s “Ben” and “Man in the Mirror,” a song that she says is about “what we can do for the world.”
Vegas has long been the playground for countless icons recognized around the globe. Think Elvis or Cher or Sinatra. Now, another single-moniker superstar is about to claim some real estate on the Las Vegas Strip: Nobu. The famed Japanese executive chef/owner of 25 restaurants in 21 cities on five continents requires no other name to distinguish himself—but formally, for the record, it’s Nobu Matsuhisa. And now, his Nobu Hospitality luxurylifestyle brand has teamed with Caesars Palace to bring the first Nobu Hotel in the world to Las Vegas. A multimillion-dollar renovation will reinvent the current Centurion Tower at Caesars Palace to create a boutique hotel within a resort, transforming the 180 stylish guest rooms, including 16 luxurious suites, into an Asian-inspired retreat complete with its own hotel check-in area.
Dion ends the night with her signature hit, “My Heart Will Go On,” punctuating a statement she had made earlier in the evening: “It feels like home.” Whether you’re rumbling through the desert, roaring down the Autobahn or just navigating city streets, the new Ducati Diavel gives you the ride of your life. The futuristic, Tron-like custom cycle is jam-packed with advanced electronics: anti-lock brakes, multiple-position traction control, different ride modes and keyless ignition.

The Nobu Restaurant and Lounge, sprawling more than 9,500 square feet, will occupy the base of the Nobu tower and provide room-service catering. Nobu is excited about the opportunity, and diners in the know should be as well. “I always put something special in my food—my heart, or kokoro, as we say in Japanese,” he says. “For me, cooking is most about giving my customers little surprises.”

The Lady Killer Hits Vegas to Shoot His Music Video
“My nickname is Loberace,” chuckles singer Cee Lo Green, decked head-to-toe in a sparkling baby-blue outfit with Swarovski crystals and feathers that recall the finery of Vegas legend Liberace. “It even says it on my pillow,” he adds proudly, for any doubters. Cee Lo was in Las Vegas filming the music video for “I Want You,” the fourth single off The Lady Killer. “I’m a student and a son of show business,” he says, from the Centurion Penthouse Suite at Caesars Palace, where many of the scenes in the video were filmed. “That’s the magic and the magnetism I was drawn to as a child. I want to relive what made me a fan, made me a follower, and made me a believer in music. That’s what these outfits are about. It’s all in fun. It’s childish, in a good way.” Filmed at several locations around Caesars Palace, the video portrays Cee Lo as a flashy—yes—lady killer, who is hosting a prince and his bride. The trip is a bit rocky, however. “He’s not being a gentleman toward her and, of course, that’s my specialty,” Cee Lo says with a grin. “So I teach him a little lesson in chivalry.” VP

Serious Sippers Casa Fuente Spirits Society Serves Rare Finds
$ What would you do with an extra $20 a day? That’s approximately the amount you save per night by staying at any Caesars Entertainment property, because the company has eliminated the hidden resort fees most other Strip hotels charge.
An average stay in Las Vegas is three days, which would give you roughly an extra $60 in your billfold—the very place it should be. Here are a few suggestions for where your money is better spent:
$
Indulge in a savory breakfast at Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace.
$ Take a spoon to a Strawberry Fields Sundae at Serendipity 3 at Caesars Palace.
$
Take a ride up the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas and soak up the Strip view.
$ Enjoy a relaxing massage while sitting poolside at the Flamingo Go Pool.
$
Loosen your belt and lunch at the Carnival World Buffet at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.
$ Grab lunch at Kerry Simon’s gourmet burger restaurant KGB at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Millionaire Maker
It’s not often you get to stroll up to the bar and ask for a glass of Glenfiddich 50-Year Single Malt. But now you can. Luxury cigar shop Casa Fuente, inside The Forum Shops at Caesars, is in the business of obtaining the world’s finest scotch, and Glenfiddich 50-Year is just that. The singular liquor is one of only six bottles available in the United States, and is the featured spirit on Casa Fuente’s Black List of rare scotch and whisky. To celebrate, Casa Fuente has introduced the Spirits Society—a club that, for a onetime fee of $50, grants access to members-only tastings and educational events, and entitles them to receive 15 percent off Black List spirits. Says Michael Frey, the shop’s managing partner, “We have created an environment for guests to enjoy some of the best elixirs in the world and become more versed in liquor and cocktail culture.”
Three Card Poker Offers a Chance to Win $1 Million Feeling lucky? The latest table game, Three Card Poker 6 Card BonusTM, proves that diamonds (in the form of a Super Royal) are a player’s best friend. That’s because hitting a Super Royal in diamonds—9, 10, J, Q, K, A— while playing the specialty game will fatten the wallet by a cool $1 million. It’s a jackpot unrivaled among table games. A Super Royal in any other suit nets the winner $100,000. The game is played exclusively at Caesars Entertainment’s Las Vegas resorts, and analysts estimate that three players could hit the $1 million jackpot every year. “We are excited to offer the first-ever table game with an instant jackpot of this size,” says Jeff Kowalchuk, Caesars Entertainment’s director of corporate table games. To be eligible for the 6 Card BonusTM $1 million jackpot, players must place three bets, including an Ante wager and a Plus Pair wager, at the table minimum. So, for as little as $15 a hand, playing at a $5 minimum table, a player has a chance to become an instant millionaire. For a player to claim the big jackpot, the player’s cards, combined with those of the dealer, must form a diamond-suited Super Royal. 20
Better than gold? Perhaps. A single bottle of the extremely rare Glenfiddich 50-year-old recently sold at auction in the United States for $38,000, making it more costly, per ounce, than gold. Due to the intricacies of aging, only one in every 100,000 casks at Glenfiddich makes it to the 50-year mark—which means tasting such a rare treasure is quite an honor. Luckily for you, it’s available at Casa Fuente for $1,100 per shot. Better hope that black AmEx card isn’t in your wife’s purse. Photos Courtesy of Casa fuente

Like Zach Galifianakis, (Alan) in The Hangover, you too can obtain more knowledge on blackjack by either taking a class with one of the dealers through Caesars Entertainment or by picking up a copy of the book Alan was thumbing through during the movie. Yes, The World’s Greatest Blackjack Book might just bring you that extra bit of luck you’ve been looking for. We’re not saying this book will change your life, but we’re saying there might be a
chance for you to win enough chips to pay off the book purchase. Then, of course, if you see Galifianakis in Las Vegas you can ask him to sign it for you.

Rahm Fama travels coast to coast for his Food Network show, Meat & Potatoes, and he still marvels at what he finds, such as the short-rib, Waffle Fry Nachos at KGB: Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers at Harrah’s Las Vegas. “I love to explore and try new foods, see new techniques, and find out what others are ‘bringing to the table.’” “At KGB, Chef Kerry Simon combines three of my favorites: short ribs cooked so long they fall apart, with a sweet, juicy ragout that has a hint of spice placed on top of, not just fries, but waffle fries with melted cheese on top. It finishes this dish to perfection. “The time and thought that went into Chef Simon’s version of chili fries is unique and delicious. No ground beef used here; only good-quality short ribs that take half the day to cook. Then, put over the best waffle fries. Have you ever tried making these things? To put that much effort into an appetizer goes to show you that no matter how small the dish is, a good chef pulls out all the stops to get it on the plate.
“The potato is my idea of gold from the earth. One of the saddest times for me was the no-starch-and-carb era. How can you go without earth’s gold? “When I’m not shooting Meat & Potatoes, I reduce the amount of meat I consume and exercise daily. Just like all luxury foods, you have to take it in moderation. “My last meal would be a meat dish for sure! A New York steak prepared medium-rare and grilled on an open fire pit with homemade kimchi on top. This spicy salad is wonderful by itself but amazing on a charred steak.” VP
Meat Rahm Fama Chef Scours the Country for Food Network Show
Chef Rahm Fama says his passion for meat began “while working [his] fingers to the bone” on a New Mexico cattle ranch run by his mother. Slaughtering a sheep at age nine with his grandfather for a family dinner, he recalls, led him to see “the process through to the plate.” Fama says, “I teach my chefs that food does not just come in a box at your doorstep.” Photos Courtesy of the food Network

Ramananda, who trained in India and has been teaching yoga for more than four decades, says the ancient practice of breathing and stretching aids in body shaping and toning, promotes healthy blood circulation and stimulates the body’s natural immune system. For travelers, yoga can alleviate the effects of jet lag, boost immunities, and help with sleep and digestion. The latest yoga trend, according to Ramananda, integrates spa before or after a session. Limbs can be heated or cooled at nearby Qua Baths & Spa, where a bevy of temperature-varying options— from whirlpools to massages—await.
After the sessions, yogis can spend time with Ramananda and learn ways to improve health and well-being, starting with their diet. A theory of Ayurvedic medicine claims certain foods keep an individual’s body in balance. Qua Baths & Spa offers this special menu to align with your dosha—which is based on energy and body chemistry—and a simple questionnaire can determine yours. So after your class, Ramananda says, you can grab a smoothie, salad or fruit plate to complete your workout. vP

Below: A selection of the Tranquility Center’s assorted fruits, vegetables and freshly squeezed fruit juices. They help to maintain balance for all three kinds of dosha, a mind-body type based on energy and body chemistry.
“Yoga helps you listen to your body. It’s all about lowering your stress level,” he says. Classes at the spa’s new Tranquility Center include classic Ashtanga, a rejuvenating yoga; and über-hip Bhartanatyam, a dance yoga combining hip-hop with traditional Hindu music. Ramananda also leads water Qigong, a martial artsinspired Chinese yoga that keeps yogis in constant motion. Practiced in the Bacchus swimming pool, it “takes the stress off the knees,” Ramananda says. PhotograPhs by danny Inglewood

CinemaCon 2011
OUTTAKES Actor’s Studio
Five Minutes at Caesars Palace with Ryan Reynolds and Cameron Diaz, CinemaCon Male and Female Stars of the Year
In Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds plays cocky test pilot Hal Jordan, whose mystical green ring confers supernatural powers. Interviewed at CinemaCon at Caesars Palace, Reynolds explained, “The ring chose him specifically. His mission is to find out why.” Of the role’s physical demands, Reynolds revealed that “falling down at [age] 34 feels different than when you’re 23. You’re not faking the facial expressions when you get up.”
Any added pressure playing a superhero? There is a bit of pressure. You work really hard on these films and you want them to succeed in every way imaginable.
What was the costume like? The character is wearing a suit that’s made of energy, so that’s a tough thing to put on every day. The costume is actually [computer-generated imagery], so I was wearing a motion-capture suit, which was gray and looks like a crash test dummy, but [is] itchy. You’re basically wearing a onesie. It’s pretty intense.
What power does Green Lantern have that you would like to have?
Cameron Diaz, who plays Elizabeth Halsey, a foul-mouthed junior-high instructor, in Bad Teacher, said it was fun teaming up with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake in the film. “He’s a genius comedian. Everybody knows Saturday Night Live and all the stuff that he’s done over the years. He’s so bizarre and hilarious. I say that with great respect.”
Why do you gravitate toward comedies? To me, laughter is medicine. It cures everything. I don’t care how horrible the situation is; there’s a moment where humor has to find its way in.
What qualities does Elizabeth have that you possess? Elizabeth is pretty truthful and honest with people. She doesn’t pretend to be something she’s not, and I think I’m a pretty straightforward person. You know what you’re dealing with when you deal with me.
And the differences?
I would love to manifest anything based on my own imagination. My God, the things you could do.
There are a few things that she could do better. She’s a hard worker, but I think her energy and focus are in the wrong place. By the end of the film, she does apply herself to the right thing.
Were you a comic book guy growing up?
Did you have any bad teachers?
A little bit. I didn’t know much about the Green Lantern. I followed some, like Deadpool and X-Men. Nothing too crazy. I didn’t have a room made entirely of comic books.
I had a couple of teachers who were mean. CinemaCon celebrates the film industry and movie-going experience, attracting thousands of industry professionals and cinema owners and operators from around the world. CinemaCon returns to Caesars Palace April 23-26, 2012.

The Pussycat Dolls Open a Sexy Saloon “The second you walk into the Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Saloon [at Gallery Nightclub], you’ll feel sexy and want to jump up on the bar and dance,” says the burlesque troupe’s creator and choreographer, Robin Antin. “We’ve created the perfect atmosphere for every woman to showcase her ‘inner Doll.’” The sultry, rich-red nightclub inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is a 4,500-square-foot “playground,” as Antin calls it, where lingerie-clad bartenders hop on the bar and strut their stuff when they’re not pouring shots. These impromptu performances are aided by the nightclub’s hot-bodied, corset-wearing Dolls, who sway from swings and perform sultry, burlesque numbers inside a glass bathtub. Antin welcomes club-goers to join in the fun, encouraging them to dance on the raised platforms or at the rhinestonestudded carousel horses. “It’s a more interactive setting,” Antin explains. “It’s not about watching the women onstage; it’s about getting up there and doing it yourself. Every woman is sexy; some just need to dig deeper to pull it out.” Antin started the Pussycat Dolls as a burlesque group in 1995 with actress Christina Applegate. They performed in The Viper Room, which was then owned by Johnny Depp. Over the years, many guest stars have slipped into a leather-and-lace Dolls costume and worked it onstage: Carmen Electra, Charlize Theron, Christina Aguilera, Kim Kardashian, Kelly Osbourne and Eva Longoria.
“It’s a more interactive setting,” explains Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin. “We’ve created the perfect atmosphere for every woman to showcase her ‘inner Doll.’”
The Pussycat Dolls singing troupe, led by Nicole Scherzinger, debuted in 2004 and exploded onto the pop charts with the hit songs “Don’t Cha,” “Stickwitu,” “I Hate This Part” and “Buttons” with Snoop Dogg. For Antin, the Pussycat Dolls go beyond burlesque. “It’s about releasing your inner Doll. To me, that means self-esteem and female empowerment,” Antin says. And of the saloon’s setting on the Strip, she says with a wink and a grin, “There is sexy, and then there’s Vegas sexy.” vP
Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin (opposite) has created a playful space in her nightclub inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The whimsical decor includes black, rhinestone-studded carousel horses and a bathtub, which Carmen Electra (top) used for her performance at the club’s grand opening.

“Displays excellence in food, beverage and service, and is likely to make a significant impact in years to come.” —The James Beard Foundation, honoring Central Michel Richard (Washington, D.C.) as its 2008 Best New Restaurant in the U.S.
“A great chef, who is cooking at a level that far exceeds any Michelin three-star chef in France,” states Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate. “One of the finest displays of modern art,” says Tom Sietsema of The Washington Post. “What you see isn’t what you get at Michel Richard Citronelle. The chef has become legend for his playfulness,” writes Phyllis Richman in Food Arts. These are just some of the comments that respected food writers have made in describing Chef Michel Richard, who began his career as a pastry chef in France, moved to America and became renowned for adapting French cuisine to California ingredients at his Citrus restaurant in Los Angeles. Not that the veteran, who was inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America in 1991, will need any assistance attracting diners to his latest launch: Central by Michel Richard, (pronounced sen-TRAL) located near the Caesars Palace hotel lobby.
In addition, he says, “I love to play with potatoes, so we have great French fries, spuddies, mashed potatoes and potato risotto.” Richard elevates something so pedestrian as a “spuddie,” which is his word for a tater tot, with ingredients such as coriander and Wondra flour— and the recipes for this and his other dishes have become so sought after, they are often published in foodie magazines such as Saveur, Bon Appétit, Wine Spectator and Food & Wine, as well as appearing in his third cookbook, Sweet Magic, published by Harper Collins in 2010.
“I am not making unusual dishes,” says the French restaurateur of Citronelle and Central in Washington, D.C., as well as Michel in The Ritz-Carlton in McLean, Virginia. “I am not trying to change the world. I just want your mouth to dance with pleasure when you eat my food.”
He also cites mosaics of carpaccios, great garlic roasted chicken and crunchy fried chicken—the last of which is served with mashed potatoes and a Dijon sauce and is available for take-out in a bucket (breast, thigh and nuggets) at his Washington, D.C., restaurant. For dessert and special occasions, the celebration cakes—individual birthday cakes—with sparkling candles “will create a festival at your table,” he says.
Richard is known for his playfulness with cuisine; he made burgers out of lobster and added “tartare of filet mignon and French fries” and fish-and-chips to his dinner menu at Washington, D.C.’s, Central Michel Richard, a 2008 James Beard Foundation Award for Best New Restaurant. His whimsy spills over into his writing, earning a James Beard nomination for his second cookbook, Happy in the Kitchen.
Above from top, fanciful fare from Chef Michel Richard: Crispy fries, crunchy fried chicken, the unique lobster burger, herb-roasted rotisserie chicken and a decadent chocolate bar.
Richard calls his Las Vegas restaurant, Central by Michel Richard, “an American bistro but with my French accent,” citing dishes such as the moist and tender 72-hour short ribs, one of his signatures.
The Caesars Palace restaurant will be open for 24-hour dining, both indoors and outside on the patio. As a result, Richard anticipates being able to satisfy the appetite of just about anyone. He notes, “The guests of Central are a potpourri of people from all over the world. Central has dishes to please all of them.” He says a guest at one of his restaurants recently told him, “‘If someone doesn’t find something to like at your restaurant, Michel, then they don’t like anything.’” VP

The Dish on Dry Shampoo and Messy Buns Celebrity hair stylist Brandon Martinez knows what works on hair. That’s why he created his own line of styling products, called B. the Product. Martinez, who has appeared on Bravo’s Blow Out and Salon Diaries, TLC’s LA Ink and NBC’s Biggest Loser, has a client list ranging from New York’s society elite such as Wendi Murdoch to supermodels including Elle Macpherson. For jet-setters and those on the go, Martinez has created a spray-dry shampoo, called Dry Cleaned, as a quick-fix hair solution. “[Dry Cleaned] is clear and doesn’t leave a powder residue or weigh your hair down. It actually provides volume. You just spray on the hair anywhere it feels oily.”
Brandon’s Summer Hair Do: Vegas Player asked Martinez for a simple hairstyle tip to beat the Vegas heat. “The Messy Side Bun is perfect. Gather your hair on the lower side of your head and wrap an elastic band around two to three times. Next, shape the bun with a few bobby pins that match your hair color, pull out a few ends to make it messier, and finish with a spritz of hairspray.” B. the Product collection is available at Les Memories in Paris Las Vegas.

CELEBRITY PORTRAIT Call of the Wolfpack
“We Found Doug!”
by Shep Morgan photograph by Jeff Lipsky/ CPi Syndication
Vegas hasn’t been the same for Justin Bartha since he costarred in The Hangover, the bawdy-humored caper that became the highestgrossing R-rated comedy ever. “People loved it,” he says, “but it was an even bigger deal in Sin City,” he explains, adding that the people of Las Vegas seem to have adopted The Hangover as “their ultimate hometown movie.” But unlike his character in the original, Bartha won’t go missing anytime soon on his next visit to the Strip. “I definitely get recognized when I go there for a weekend—from casinos and restaurants to just walking down the Strip,” he says and with a shrug adds, “And I don’t mind if they call me Doug.”

CELEBRITY PORTRAIT Call of the Wolfpack
Bartha came back as Doug in The Hangover Part II, which took the Wolfpack to Thailand for more weird and raucous adventures. And he’s not surprised that the sequel is a huge hit. “It pushes the envelope even farther,” he says. “But it still makes people of all ages laugh. I got messages from people’s grandparents saying that they got a huge kick out of the first one, so I guess we have a pretty wide demographic.” Bartha says filming in Bangkok wasn’t exactly the same as hanging out in a Vegas hotel. “It’s a wonderful exotic locale,” he remembers, “but there’s a little air of danger hovering around and it’s incredibly hot and sticky. You just try to forget the humidity, wipe off your sweat and pretend like you just dipped in the pool.” “It was a little different at Caesars Palace,” he continues. “There’s a whole world there, from The Forum Shops and gourmet restaurants to the casinos. Most of the original was filmed inside or at night and,” he adds jokingly, “I’ve always loved Vegas, but when we finally left we were kind of squinting at the sun because we hadn’t seen it for so long.”
Above: Bangkok has them. After arriving in Thailand, the guys again find trouble in The Hangover Part II. “It pushes the envelope even farther,” Bartha says of The Hangover Part II. “It still makes people of all ages laugh.”
ROMANCE ON-SCREEN AND OFF The handsome, blue-eyed 33-year-old from Michigan first got noticed playing a psychologically disturbed young man kidnapped from a mental hospital in Gigli, which starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Bartha’s big break came when he landed the role of Nicolas Cage’s geeky, wise-cracking sidekick in the hugely popular National Treasure movies. And then, of course, he scored big in The Hangover.
“We look at these pictures together, OK? One time. And then we delete the evidence.” Above: The famous Wolfpack speech in The Hangover, on the roof of Caesars Palace; Bartha at the Las Vegas premiere of The Hangover Part II at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

In 2010, Bartha tackled the Broadway comedy, Lend Me a Tenor, and received raves for his role starring in the play with actors Tony Shalhoub and Anthony LaPaglia. Bartha also excelled as a drug-dealing Hasidic Jew in the indie flick Holy Rollers, a Sundance Film Festival standout that also starred Jesse Eisenberg.

Bartha plays computer whiz kid Riley Poole in National Treasure, opposite Diane Kruger and Nicolas Cage (top). The three stars reunited for the sequel with Ed Harris (above) to unravel the mystery to the missing pages in assassin John Wilkes Booth’s diary.
As a drug dealer in Holy Rollers, Bartha leads a man studying to be a rabbi (played by Jesse Eisenberg) into a life of crime.
But Bartha, who admits Holy Rollers was among his most demanding roles, says he’s more a lover than that bad boy— both on-screen and off—and that dating in Hollywood has its own challenges. “All the media scrutiny does add a very unnatural element to being with someone, but I would not call that the test of love. I call that a test of patience as you cope with the press trying to invade your life. It’s just another thing you’ve got to deal with.” “I think I’m a romantic,” he adds. “I identify with the search for someone. When I was younger, I had this idea of what I was looking for in a woman and looking for in love. Then fantasy meets reality. I think that’s the true test of whether you’re ready to settle into being with another person. It’s when you realize that the fantasy of what you want is not the reality of what your life is going to be with another person. I think accepting that day to day, when you’re ready, is the true test of love.” Bartha, who is now single after dating Ashley Olsen, recently got a chance to fall for Catherine Zeta-Jones, who costars with him in the romantic comedy The Rebound. “I play a manny [a male nanny],” he says. “My character starts babysitting Catherine’s kids and, of course, a romance ensues.” “We do have a sex scene,” he says with a smile. “That was definitely not just another day at the office. It was a day where you think, ‘Wow, I went into the right profession.’ However, it turned out less sexy than it could have been because of some nice fabric burns I picked up on my chest when we were rolling around on the couch.” Bartha readily admits he was totally bowled over by Zeta-Jones. “She is extremely strong,” he says. “The public perception of her might be that she’s a bit of a fancy lady, but she is the consummate mother and homemaker. That’s the classiest part about her: that she really cares deeply about her family and devotes her entire life to her children and her husband. It was a very brave thing for her to go public about her bipolar disorder and try to help other people.” And Bartha doesn’t hide his admiration for another older woman with whom he costarred in National Treasure: Book of Secrets. “If Helen Mirren weren’t married, I would have no problem trying to bed her,” he jokes. “I know many guys who have acted with her and get quite a crush. In a relationship, I don’t know if age is just a number. I think it’s more dependent on who the people are.” Bartha, who will next be seen opposite Mia Farrow and Christopher Walken in the indie flick Dark Horse, directed by Todd Solondz, insists he’s not aiming for fame. “I didn’t really have dreams of being a star,” he says. “I still don’t think about my career in those terms. I’m from the Midwest and no one in my family was ever in the business or lived in Hollywood. I kind of stumbled upon acting and always loved it and just tried to keep following that passion. As for what I do the rest of the time, it is just the natural thing to have your private life be private.” And that includes social media. Bartha says emphatically, “I don’t tweet, Twitter or whatever. Some people say to me, ‘How can you exist without a Facebook page?’ I’m just comfortable in my own existence. I don’t have to brag about it on the Internet.” VP

COCKTAIL CULTURE Berry Good Tastes
Poolside Punch by Jen Karetnick
Fresh Tropical Juices Up the Ante on Cabana Cocktails
Just when you thought 3-D effects were limited to movies, along comes Eddie Perales. The beverage operations specialist at Caesars Palace has created a never-before-seen take on cocktails and cabana bottle service—and it starts with a pair of 3-D glasses. “The program was designed to have a flow of ‘wow’ factors,” Perales explains. “We are very excited to present something so fresh and new at our poolside cabanas.” It begins with a three-dimensional menu offering five punch-based drinks. All start with one of Belvedere’s flavored vodkas—Orange, Black Raspberry, Pink Grapefruit or Citrus. The vodka is then mixed with freshly squeezed fruit juices and syrups in a solid-ice punch bowl and served in unique fashion. “We use frozen baby pineapples, small watermelons and cucumber cups as serving vessels,” Perales says. The guest first chooses a punch base. One drink, for example, combines Belvedere Pink Grapefruit vodka with watermelon and cantaloupe juices and is infused with strawberries and fresh mint. The cocktail server then adds the garnishes: anything from edible flowers or herbs to melon balls, pared peach and apricot slices, and paper-thin wheels of citrus and cucumber.
Punch Party Ring in summer with a refreshing fruit-flavored poolside punch. Prepared with your favorite Belvedere flavored vodkas, the cool cocktails in the Caesars Palace cabana punch program are a surefire way to beat the heat. Pitchers of punch are also available for purchase on the pool deck and at the pool bar. “Spartacus” Cantaloupe and citrus juices mixed with Belvedere Black Raspberry vodka and infused with raspberries, blackberries and fresh rosemary. “Hercules” Watermelon and cantaloupe juices with lemon sour, mixed with Belvedere Pink Grapefruit vodka and infused with strawberries and fresh mint.
It’s pretty simple to make The Perfect Margarita, according to Arturo Marquez (right). Just mix 1 1/2 ounces of Partida Tequila with the juice of one whole lime and 1/2 ounce of agave nectar.
“Gladiator” Blood orange and cranberry juices mixed with Belvedere Orange vodka and infused with a medley of citrus fruits and fresh mint and rosemary. “Helios” Cucumber juice mixed with Belvedere Citrus vodka and infused with green apple and fresh cilantro and basil. “Zeus” Peach and apricot juices mixed with Belvedere IX vodka infused with pomegranate and a berry medley with fresh mint.

Taste the Tropics with These Fruit-Flavored Cocktails: You’ll Be Living the Island Life in No Time Then out comes the pièce de résistance: a machine that creates clear ice spheres out of the solid ice in approximately 15 seconds. This ice, which keeps its form in the hot Vegas sun, takes longer to melt and dilute your drink— a win-win situation for both cocktail and cocktail lover. It is as if the drink were created by deities—appropriate indeed for imbibing at the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis. VP

BEST BETS Sports Book
We BETCHA IT WILL PAY TO ReAD THIS HERE’S THE SCORE ON PLAYING THE ODDS IN FOOTBALL WAGERS
by Matt Villano
Football season is back, and everyone is looking for an edge when it comes to wagering on the game. We went to two experts for advice on gridiron handicapping: Jordan Runco, chief operating officer for ATS Consultants, a professional sports consulting and handicapping service based in Baltimore; and Todd Fuhrman, race and sports analyst at Caesars Palace. Here are their top tips: Tip 1: Keep It Simple Most of the time, stick to betting the point spread, which requires favorites to win by a certain number of points and gives underdogs a handicap. Runco says a player’s odds for simple point-spread wagers are often better than teaser, money line or specialty wagers. Point spreads work because they give you some breathing room when betting the underdog, he explains.
Nothing beats the excitement of watching football in a Las Vegas sports book.
60
VEGAS PlAyEr
11VP B-Best Bets.indd 60
Tip 2: Bet with Your Head There’s no place for fans in the world of wagering. “Betting with your heart usually gets you into trouble,” says Runco. “When you step into the sports book, you should check your allegiance at the door.” Tip 3: Seek Value Study trends and matchups to find lines you can leverage. Fuhrman suggests: “Look for teams who are on an against-the-spread losing skid because you may be able to get an extra half point or point that wouldn’t normally be there.”
Tip 4: Be Forgetful Despite inevitable media hype, it’s important never to place too much emphasis on a single game or single performance. “A football team is never as good as their best game or as bad as their worst,” Fuhrman notes. Tip 5: Manage Money Masterfully While it’s tempting to put big bucks behind a single game, long-term success depends on hitting a much higher percentage of your bets on multiple games. Runco’s advice: Diversify. “You wouldn’t put [a third] of your 401k on one stock,” he says. “It’s important to mix it up.” VP

SportS Central off to the races
Las Vegas’ own Alex Tagliani leads the charge as IndyCar returns to race in his hometown.
IndyCar Returns to Las Vegas, Features by Rob Wiser $5 Million Bounty
After a six-year absence, IndyCar is coming back to Las Vegas for its 2011 race season finale. And the Izod IndyCar World Championships at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway will feature a thrilling twist that has the motorsports world buzzing: It’s open to non-IndyCar drivers, who—should they win—would take home a $5 million bonus. A selection committee will invite five non-IndyCar drivers to participate in the event, and if they qualify in time trials, they’re in. “We showcase our drivers as being the very best in the world,” said IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. “And we are putting our money where our mouth is [to prove it].” The race will be held October 16 on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s 1.5-mile, high-banked oval, which is known for producing side-by-side racing and extremely close finishes. Racing on oval tracks allows Indy cars to reach the fastest speeds in motorsports, sometimes averaging in excess of 220 mph. One IndyCar driver who is particularly looking forward to the event is Alex Tagliani, who races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. A Las Vegas resident, Tagliani is excited to race in front of his family and friends in what promises to be a fast and furious showdown. “With the current IndyCar machines, I think we can expect a very close field,” Tagliani predicted. “Fans are going to see ‘pack’ racing with a lot of close, wheel-to-wheel action. I think they’re going to be on their feet the whole race.” VP
