WELCOME LETTER

Celebrating Modern ClassiCs Silver screen legend Elizabeth Taylor was famous for many things, among them her gorgeous violet eyes, her many marriages and her love of jewelry. Liz even published a beautiful coffee table book called My Love Affair with Jewelry, which tells the stories behind her famous gems. “You can’t cry on a diamond’s shoulder, and diamonds won’t keep you warm at night,” Liz once said. “But they're sure fun when the sun shines.”

Crown of Light

In “Liz Taylor, the Ultimate Jewelry Queen” (pg. 58), we celebrate a love that we here at Discover Style share with Liz. In this issue, we also highlight women who, like Liz, effortlessly exude confidence and style, such as former model Inés de la Fressange and cover girl Reese Witherspoon. When you read about Inés and Reese, you will meet two women who define our modern classic theme. Each, in her own way, has an attitude that tells the world: “This is who I am.” They celebrate life with self-confidence and humor. A great line in “Eternally, Agelessly Chic,” the article about Inés (pg. 76), is a quote from her book Parisian Chic: “The secret of great style is to feel good in what you wear. If you don’t feel comfortable in a plunging sweater, skin-tight jeans and killer heels, go home and change!” Lots of interesting subjects are addressed in the magazine, such as some of the activities you will find aboard your Princess ship (pg. 36); ways to find out more about your life’s path and future potential with numerology (pg. 120); and the origins of famous cocktails born in the Caribbean (pg. 110).

A style guide for francophiles and style lovers alike by model and designer Ines de la Fressange

Everyone knows that a cruise is a good time for shopping, and the Caribbean is the best place to find great deals on watches and jewelry. No matter what you are looking for, you can find it on the pages of Discover Style. Flip through to find the perfect pretty piece for you or someone you love.

Enjoy!

Why buy a fine timepiece? By Tasha Riekstins

Everything seems to move at a faster pace today, and time has become more precious than ever. So we should keep track of it with something just as valuable — something that reminds us daily of just how precious those seconds, minutes and hours are. There are so many logical reasons to own a fine timepiece. Take the investment value of a watch. Luxury watches will last many years as well as retain their value and status over time. They are also a subtle symbol of wealth and success. They command respect and are appreciated by people who recognize their quality. Think of the most successful man or woman you know. What is on his or her wrist? A fine timepiece is also an heirloom that can be passed from generation to generation. It is a constant reminder of the story behind the watch. And when you glance at it and admire it, a fine timepiece reminds you of the time that really matters: the months and years that have passed since you first acquired it. If time is the most precious thing we have, shouldn’t we keep it with something just as valuable?

Watches 101

EvEr wondEr what actually makEs a watch work? Explaining a complication nEEd not bE complicatEd. Find out what makEs a FinE timEpiEcE so magniFicEnt.

Automatic: A self-winding watch whose movement is mechanical. A weight (the rotor) turns by the motion of your arm and winds the mainspring. The energy is transferred into mechanical energy that creates the watch movement. These watches can be shaken or manually wound if the power reserve runs out. Bezel: The ring surrounding the watch dial (or face). The bezel is usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel. Originally, the bezel was the glass ring in the case that was snapped with the pressed-in crystal onto the center part of the watch case. Decorative and rotating rings are often called “bezels” today.

Case: The protective cover on a watch. Cases are available in many different types and materials. There is also a large number of case shapes (round, square, oval, rectangular, barrel-shaped or pillow-shaped). Chronograph: Stopwatch function that uses sub-dials to keep track of seconds, minutes and hours.

Crystal: The transparent cover on a watch face made of glass crystal, synthetic sapphire or plastic. Better watches often have a sapphire crystal, which is highly resistant to scratching or shattering.

Complication: Additional mechanism in mechanical wrist watches that can only be made by specialists. The most important complications for mechanical watches include chronographs, calendars, retrograde indicators, striking works and alarms.

Jewels: Synthetic sapphires or rubies that act as bearings for gears in a mechanical watch. The jewels reduce friction to make the watch more accurate and longer lasting.

Crown: Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the button on the outside of the watch case

Quartz Movement: Quartz crystals are very accurate and can be mass-produced, which makes them less expensive than most mechanical movements requiring a higher degree of craftsmanship. Skeleton Watch: A timepiece in which the case and various parts of the movement are of transparent material, enabling the main parts of the watch to be seen. Water-Resistance: The ability to withstand splashes of water. Terms such as “water resistant to 50 meters” or “water resistant to 200 meters” indicate that the watch can be worn underwater to various depths. Sources: BJSOnline.com

No time Like the Present (No present like the time!)

Watches for him What Makes hiM tick? Jean-Claude Biver chairMan of the board at hublot Jean-Claude Biver has left his mark on Swiss watchmaking. During his career, he revived the Omega and Blancpain names, and developed a new concept for Hublot called “the art of fusion” — fusion of tradition and innovation, and of the past and future — in 2004. In his words, “We are not breaking with the past, on the contrary we are paying homage to it by connecting it to the future.” In just a few years, Biver turned Hublot into one of the most successful watch brands. It has been chosen as the official watch for many organizations and events, including the FIFA Football World Cup, Formula 1 racing, Ferrari, the Manchester United football team, the 2012 NBA Champion Miami Heat basketball team, and the prestigious Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and Monaco Yacht Club. What inspires you? My inspiration and my “religion” is love. In the words of the Beatles, “All you need is love.” What watch are you wearing? The Hublot Minute Repeater Cathedral Tourbillon Chronograph in carbon fiber is a first that combines traditional grand complication within a high-tech material of the 21st century.

Clockwise from top: Zenith Espada, David Yurman Classic and Hublot King Power Great Britain.

What do you do when you’re not working? When am I not working? Because when I work I never get the impression that I am working. 30

Cartier’s Rich History

one of the oldest jewelers in the world, catering to the whims of royalty and movie stars alike, Cartier enjoys a reputation for selling only the finest quality jewelry, watches and accessories. Nowhere is this philosophy more in evidence than Cartier’s highly diverse line of wristwatches, many of which are the most recognizable designs on the planet. From the tank or pasha Cartier watch models, to the finest bejeweled creations for women, there is literally a Cartier watch for everyone, at almost every price point.

DI a MonDs 101 I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond.” —Mae West

It’s never too early to

Upgrade by Tasha Riekstins

Did you know that diamonds shrink over time? Well, not really… but after five to 10 years that diamond does begin to look a little smaller! Shopping in the Caribbean allows you the unique opportunity to upgrade or update your current diamond jewelry. As most women mature, their style does too. Think about it: What did you look like in 1988? Also, you may have reached a monumental milestone in your relationship that deserves recognition. Whether you have been together five years or 25, you’ve earned an upgrade! While diamonds are forever, that doesn’t mean the style of your jewelry has to be. Here are some clever ways to update your current diamond jewelry:

1 2 3

Change your setting. Celebrate your right as a woman to change your mind. One way to elevate your diamond is to simply change its setting. Maybe you bought your original diamond ring in a yellow gold setting and today you wear mostly white gold. This cruise is your chance to make a change. Just wait until you see the selection that awaits you in port. The possibilities are endless. Change your center stone. Are you a romantic at heart who doesn’t want to give up the original diamond from your wedding ring? Then don’t. Simply have the diamond set into a pendant so it will be forever close to your heart. Then choose a different shape, a larger carat weight or a colored diamond in your original mounting. Total overhaul! Why not start all over? You can actually upgrade any and every piece of diamond jewelry in port. You can walk in with those half-carat studs and leave with a big smile and a carat in each ear. Or trade in your diamond wedding ring for something completely new and exciting.

The great thing about diamond jewelry is that it can grow with you over a lifetime. See your Princess Shopping Host to find out where to upgrade your diamond this voyage.

Liz TayLor: The ULTimaTe JeweLry QUeen By Meryl Davids Landau Left: “La Peregrina,” Liz’s pearl, diamond and ruby necklace, fetched a worldrecord price of $11,842,500 at Christie’s in New York.

DiamonDs may be every girl’s best friend, but perhaps none of us bonds to our sparklers quite like Elizabeth Taylor. Although the dazzling, much-married movie star who burst onto the scene nearly seven decades ago was stunning sans a single bauble, the fully fleshed-out “Liz Look” has to include jaw-dropping necklaces, earrings and, of course, those famous diamond rings. “Liz lived larger than life, so it’s not surprising her jewelry was larger than life, too,” says Joseph Papa, author of Elizabeth Taylor: a Passion for Life. The most massively oversized diamond earrings and necklaces looked natural on her, he says, set as they were against her dark, always coiffed hair and uniquely violet-colored eyes, and — perhaps most important of all — worn with a hefty dose of self-confidence. Yet Liz understood her gems’ true value. “I’ve never thought of my jewelry as trophies. I’m here to take care of it and to love it, for we are only temporary custodians of beauty,” Liz once said of her magnificent array. Liz’s self-professed love affair with jewelry started with a charm bracelet collection in adolescence, and was later fed by a series of directors and lovers showering her with increasingly elaborate baubles. It was a passion matched by her knowledge of gemstones and her impeccable sense of style — all the more impressive when you realize studios didn’t employ stylists to create a star’s look in those days. Liz pulled it off herself. The stories behind what became one of the world’s greatest jewelry collections (several hundred pieces of which were sold by Christie’s in 2011 for a record-breaking $116 million) are fascinating and legendary, such as how she won a game of table tennis to then-husband Richard Burton in 1970 where they’d bet a diamond. Burton promptly set out to find the smallest possible stone — in

58

|

the end, combining three gems into a trio of small rings dubbed “The Ping Pong Diamonds.” Prior husband Mike Todd surprised her with a suite of Cartier diamond-and-ruby earrings, necklace and bracelet while she was swimming in her pool, and, no mirror in hand, she took to admiring herself in them via the water’s reflection. And, of course, there is the story of how Burton presented her with a breathtaking 69-carat pear-shaped rock for her 40th birthday — after all, what else do you get the girl who has everything? “It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a big ring on Elizabeth Taylor’s finger,” Andy Warhol once recalled, according to the L.A. Times, reflecting a sentiment that mixes our fascination with Liz with awe for her incredible taste in jewelry. Perhaps her most famous bauble is the legendary “La Peregrina,” a pearl equal in size to a 55-carat diamond, which in the sixteenth century belonged to the royal family of Spain. After Burton purchased it at an auction in 1969 — outbidding modern Spanish royalty — Liz asked Cartier to design a setting of natural pearls and rubies — creating one of the most well-known jewelry pieces of our time. Ward Landrigan, the former head of Sotheby’s division, sometimes hand-delivered some of Liz’s most impressive purchases. Now CEO at Verdura jewelry in New York City, Landrigan recalls being in the same restaurant in 1968 when Liz gave a group of passing schoolgirls a thrill. She not only gave each of them an autograph, but also let them try on her 33-carat Krupp Diamond (recently renamed The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond). “It was amazing to see her generosity. The girls were no doubt as thrilled by this gorgeous movie star as by her famous diamond,” he says. And, really, aren’t we all?

of Style, called Parisian Chic “a practical guide to je ne sais quoi.” So how, exactly, does this French-born beauty maintain her sense of style? Like many perfectly groomed Parisiennes, de la Fressange keeps it simple. She pairs a pencil skirt with ballet flats rather than heels, for instance. and she never over-accessorizes, choosing only one bold piece of statement jewelry, such as a gold cuff bracelet or a chunky necklace. de la Fressange offers advice that can help achieve self-confidence, a Parisian woman’s most stylish and beautiful accoutrement. The key to effortless style comes from a tip she suggests in Parisian Chic: “The secret of great style is to feel good in what you wear. if you don’t feel comfortable in a plunging sweater, skin-tight jeans and killer heels, go home and change!”

day to day is to be that person that can look at myself in the mirror and be OK with myself.”

Walking the Line in 2006, Witherspoon’s career reached a high when she won the academy award® for Best actress as Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter, in Walk the line. Off-screen she seemed to have a perfect family with her handsome husband, actor Ryan Phillippe, and their two children. Fans were shocked when the fairy-tale couple parted ways in 2006 amid hurtful headlines and a painful divorce. after several years as a single mom to ava, 14, and deacon, 10, Witherspoon took another walk down the aisle in 2011 with talent agent Jim toth, with whom she had her third son, tennessee James, born September 27, 2012. She says of marriage the second time around, “i think there is no perfect guy and there’s no perfect girl. honestly. i think when you’re younger you think there is but it’s really about finding someone who’s a good friend, who loves you for every quality — your good and your bad — that’s what keeps a relationship together.”

Fashionably Blonde Reese Witherspoon is always a glamorous attention-getter when she strikes a pose at Tinseltown events. Stepping into the media spotlight, she adds her own touch to trendy fashions from top designers like Christian Dior, Vanessa Bruno and Stella McCartney. She can really turn heads when she shows up in outfits like the 1955 Dior vintage gown she wore to accept her Oscar in 2006, or the canary-yellow Nina Ricci cocktail dress she wore to the 2007 Oscars following her break-up with Ryan Phillippe. At the 2012 Oscars, diamonds and emeralds complemented her 1960sinspired black-and-white Giorgio Armani Privé dress and her bombshell retro ponytail. As for her closet full of shoes to die for, Witherspoon reveals, “I became a collector when I inherited all of Elle’s heels from both films, probably like 150 pairs. I like to squirrel my Manolos away for special occasions. I’m still more comfortable wearing a pair of trainers.” What’s her biggest fashion secret? Witherspoon reveals, “I wear what fits. And I don’t mind a little help from padding and a push-up bra.” —S. S.

Looking back on a range of roles, from frothy romantic comedies to heart-wrenching dramas that have made her one of hollywood’s highest-paid actresses (an estimated $28 million in the past year), Witherspoon says, “it’s about loving what you do. i think people can see that on the screen. They can tell if you’re having fun or just being miserable and sleepwalking through a role. Fortunately, i have a great love and passion for everything i do.” “i really try to focus completely because i’m one of those people who’s always wanted to have a long career,” she adds. “my problem has been that i don’t stop to relax enough. my parents always used to call me ‘little type a’ because i was so driven to be an actress.” The girl from nashville, who grew up to lose her Southern accent and become a world-class star, is also a hit on the red carpet. But she isn’t worried about keeping her glamorous side in perspective. “i’ve never been into that hollywood game of being the skinniest or the most beautiful,” she says. “What i try to do

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

MAN IN THE MOON (1991) At 14, she captured hearts in her bigscreen debut as a girl struggling with first love.

At the Academy Awards® in 2006, Reese accepted her Oscar in this 1955 Christian Dior V-neck dress.

PLEASANTVILLE (1998) Transported into a 1950s sitcom, she somehow made the weird premise believable. CRUEL INTENTIONS (1999) In a trashy teen version of Dangerous Liaisons, she shared the screen with her future husband, Ryan Phillippe. ELECTION (1999) It was fun to hate her as a know-it-all over-achieving student in a comic turn that got her a Golden Globe. LEGALLY BLONDE (2001) She was boosted to stardom as Elle Woods, the dippy sorority girl who goes to Harvard Law School. She scored again in the sequel, when Elle took on Washington in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. SWEET HOME ALABAMA (2002) Drawing on her Southern roots, she played an Alabama girl who leaves her husband behind for a high-flying life as a fashion designer in the Big Apple. WALK THE LINE (2005) Her riveting performance as Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter, earned her an Academy Award ® for Best Actress.

FOUR CHRISTMASES (2008) In spite of mixed reviews, this wacky holiday comedy with Vince Vaughn was a top grossing success. MONSTERS VS ALIENS (2009) She scored her biggest box-office hit as the voice of a giant superwoman in this animated feature. WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (2011) Playing a circus bareback rider, she had an affair with Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson. MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS (2013) She stars in an adaption of the bestselling non-fiction book of all time.

While her career has surged and love has blossomed, Witherspoon still considers herself first and foremost a mom. “i love my work but there’s something about playing with your kids or calming their fears at night when the room is dark that makes you realize that’s what life is all about,” she says. “i feel like the second i became a mother, i became somebody’s role model. That was the biggest responsibility of my life and rising to that challenge every day is what keeps me centered and helps me make choices.”

mom next door So how does she see herself? “i like to think of myself as kind of the mom next door who’s behind you in the car pool,” she says with a smile. “i’m like everybody else. i’m just lucky to have a great job.” Witherspoon doesn’t deny, however, that meeting the demands of both her career and family is a juggling act. “i like to be very organized but i forget appointments right and left,” she says. “it’s hard to schedule everything but you get it done. i think women are natural caretakers. They take care of everybody. They take care of their husband and their kids and their dogs and don’t spend a lot of time just kicking back and taking time out. There has to be a bal-

ance and i think the challenge of achieving that is something which a lot of people can relate to.” “i certainly have struggled with who i am and who i want to be,” she continues. “everybody has a share of indecisive moments in their lives. Just being a mother is very scary. But i say to myself, ‘i can do this.’ and usually i can accomplish what i set out to do.” Witherspoon’s to-do list is daunting. aside from motherhood and an acting career, she is the face of avon products, has her own production company called type a Films, and owns a ranch north of Los angeles with herds of goats and donkeys. She’s not taking her choice of film roles lightly. “What i feel is a certain amount of responsibility to just represent women in the way that i see them,” Witherspoon says. “i know women who pay the bills and take care of the children and help their husbands. i don’t know a lot of women who do silly things like follow men around and give them all their money. i don’t even know how to begin to play people like that and i don’t think that’s where my future lies.”

What Lies ahead Wherever the future takes her, one thing seems sure, at 36, Witherspoon remains very much in charge of where she’s going. “i’m not wishywashy,” she says. “i tell people exactly how i feel about things. if i’m mad at you, you know within a minute. There’s no ambiguity. it’s nice to be in a place where i’m getting older and i don’t feel fearful of who i am. i just am becoming clearer about myself.” Then she adds with a laugh, “But as i said to somebody the other day, ‘i’m old enough to know that i know absolutely nothing.’” Discover Style

THE GOOD LIFE

“The firsTs have been honors for me,” Cora acknowledges. “But the craft of cooking has been, and always will be, my first love. It is an honor to be recognized for my accomplishments when I get to do something I enjoy every day.” Cora’s inspiration comes from both local and global influences. “I’ve been fortunate to travel the world to see and experience many different cultures and flavors, which I incorporate in my day-to-day life. I love being out of my comfort zone and I’m always looking to reach further into who I am as a chef and a person.” In fact, for Bravo’s reality TV show, Around the World in 80 Plates, Cora traveled to 10 countries in 44 days, from Italy to Argentina. Thailand was her favorite destination. “Thailand is a wonderfully spiritual and uplifting place in all ways,” says the California resident. Her co-star on the show is Curtis Stone, the telegenic Aussie, who also hosts Top Chef Masters. This is not their first time working together, however. The duo also promotes their cookware lines on HSN. “Curtis is a great guy and a close friend,” Cora says. “We always have a good time filming together and enjoy each other’s company off-camera as well.” Although Cora spends a lot of time in front of the camera, home is her preferred domain where the openly gay TV star can spend family time with her wife, Jennifer, and their four boys. “[They’re] such an inspiration to what I do in life and in the kitchen.” For home chefs who don’t have her extensive experience, Cora advises restraint. “Don’t get frustrated,” she counsels. “It takes time to cook like the professionals on television. You have to take baby steps and learn each step well before you move to the next. Have fun and don’t try to do too much or more than you can. Using fresh, seasonal ingredients is one of the biggest secrets to cooking a delicious meal…. It is about using what is available now so that you are serving the freshest food, which gives you the best results.” Teaching others the importance of avoiding overly processed, fatty foods is Cora’s mission as a chef and philanthropist. As the founder and president of Chefs for Humanity, Cora is passionate about fighting obesity in America, and her organization has partnered with first lady Michelle Obama to help launch the initiative Chefs Move to Schools. “I am an avid believer in helping fight chronic malnutrition in Haiti and other countries such as Ethiopia with our Safe Stoves program, which we were able to fund with the United Nations World Food Program initiative,” she explains. Cora is working with Global Gardens, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering students and communities by teaching them about food through science; she hopes to bring the program to Haiti. She ventured into the online arena with her iPad app, Cat Cora’s Kitchen, which simplifies the cooking process for chefs of any skill level. She also announced a partnership with Mozo shoe manufacturer to produce a cook-inspired shoe line. Cora clearly has her hands in many pots, from TV hosting to commerce and philanthropy, but her greatest joy is cooking with the family. “Our favorite meal together is great authentic tacos,” she enthuses. “Give us hot handmade corn tortillas, fresh veggies, fish, with blistered chilies on the side. Yum!”

COCKTA ILS

CARIBBEAN CONCOCTIONS By Haley Struthers

From Famous waters to famous writers, there’s more to the cocktails of the Caribbean than what goes in the glass. These concoctions mix lengthy tales and much-debated histories — a pinch of legend and a dash of romance. The stories date back to the days of swashbucklers and naval captains, but the cocktails still impress the travelers of today.

I’ll Take Mine Blended

Perhaps one of the most iconic drinks, more for its ability to get you caught in the rain (as the song goes), is the piña colada. As the official beverage of Puerto Rico, this pineapple concoction has a history that is hotly debated. Born in Cuba, the virgin piña colada became alcoholic when it met Puerto Rican rum — although the Caribe Hilton and Barrachina restaurant in San Juan both lay claim to its creation. According to Puerto Rican historians, the famous drink was created on August 16, 1954, by Ramon “Monchito” Marrero for the Caribe Hilton. The fact is documented since Monchito used Coco Lopez, which was created that same year by Ramón López Irizarry, an agricultural professor at the University of Puerto Rico. However, Barrachina’s story maintains that Spanish chef Pepe Barrachina met with a fellow Spaniard, bartender Don Ramon Portas Mingot, to create a new cocktail. In 1963, Mingot combined pineapple juice, coconut cream, condensed milk and ice in a blender. The originator of the drink may never be truly known, but one thing is for sure: It became one of the most popular cocktails in the Caribbean and beyond. Like the piña colada, many other drinks use a rum base; the Caribbean is known for some of the best rum in the world, and most rum now comes from here. As far back as the 17th century and until 1970, the British Royal Navy even rationed out a daily amount to its sailors. A traditional blend from the British Virgin Islands is The Painkiller, originally made with Pusser’s Rum. The Soggy Dollar Bar claims this cocktail comes from its hideaway on White Bay, BVI. It’s a close cousin to the piña colada and the Goombay Smash, but Grenadian nutmeg adds a dash of deliciousness.

On the Rocks

And what would a Caribbean vacation be without a little mojito? The perfectly crisp and refreshing drink makes its home in Cuba, but its origin is debated. The original recipe was only made with rum once it became widely available, but the slaves of the Cuban sugarcane trade laid the foundation with guarapo, a sugarcane juice. Ernest Hemingway popularized this drink at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, which displays his handwritten note on the wall of the bar. For a knockout, be sure to check out one of the many types of rum punches available throughout the Caribbean islands. The Barbadian Bajan rum punch even has a national rhyme, so you can make it at home. Just remember: “One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak.” That’s one part lime juice, two parts sweetener, three parts rum and four parts water. If your travels take you to St. Maarten/St. Martin, pick up some guavaberry liqueur, made with a rare fruit found in the center of the island’s high hills. “There is really nothing in nature that tastes quite like a guavaberry,” said Stephen Thompson, managing director of Sint Maarten Guavaberry Company. “Guavaberry is an essential part of the history on [the island], inextricably tied to her folklore and culture. In that way it is in a different league. It is quite precious. The fruit is also extremely rare.” There is also the Dominican Republic’s somewhat mysterious mamajuana, which was originally a tea steeped in bark, herbs and honey. Later, red wine was added to the mix. And not shockingly, its base is — yo-ho-ho — a bit of rum.

Avid reAder or not, chances are you’ve heard the chatter about at least one of the myriad book trilogies and series causing a stir, including Fifty Shades of Grey, Twilight, The Hunger Games, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, to name a few. The trilogy/series trend has engulfed best-seller lists far and wide and inundated theaters with adaptations for the silver screen. Multi-titles are nothing new, though; The Hardy Boys, Sherlock Holmes, The Lord of the Rings, Nancy Drew, The Chronicles of Narnia and many more have been around for years. Yet a revived exuberance is unmistakable.

Some SerieS-ouS StatS

So what is all the hoopla about? readers both youthful and mature have become captivated by stories that live on far beyond the final page of a single novel. “readers enjoy the familiarity and continuity of the characters and settings that keep them coming back to learn more about their lives and adventures,” explains ellie Berger, president of Scholastic trade, publisher of such series as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Book lover amy Stultz, of New Hampshire, who has read many series including Twilight, Harry Potter and Fifty Shades, believes the draw lies in the reader’s ability to engage with the characters in an in-depth manner. “When i finish a really good book, i am left wanting more,” says the mother of two. “i feel a connection with the characters, and i want to know what happens next. Series bring us from beginning to end, and allow for the excitement we get from [the characters’] joys — and the sadness we feel for their losses — to linger.” Lengthy stories teeming with details and characters appeal to Scott Sherris of Georgia, who began reading series such as Encyclopedia Brown during his childhood and has read, among many other series, A Song of Ice and Fire, from which HBo’s Game of Thrones show is based. “Series are attractive because they make it easy to find an author and story in which i’m interested. really engaging, creative authors are pretty rare; if i find one i like, i know that i could have months of good reading material ahead of me.” once hooked by the first gripping storyline — such as the steamy romance between a college student and a brilliant entrepreneur with erotic tastes, in e.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey — readers seem compelled to read an entire series immediately, whenever available, or chomp at the bit until the next installment is released. “i read the first and second books in The Hunger Games in one day and did the same with the first two books in the Fifty Shades series,” Stultz said. “i finished the last books within a week. reading a series is like a very long book.” Likewise, when adaptations of these sagas are released in cinemas or on television, fans flock. “i love seeing real people fill in the roles i’ve only vaguely defined in my head,” says Sherris, who works in international finance. Hollywood has been cashing in, giving book buffs exactly what they want, and it seems trilogy and series enthusiasts are picking their heads up out of their books long enough to break movie ticket sales records, a most fitting sequel to their literary counterparts’ sales.

Trilogies’ and series’ plotlines aren’t the only things to “ooh” and “aah” over. Staggering figures on book sales, author paydays, ownership rights, movie ticket sales and box office records lead to plenty of jaw dropping, head shaking and eye popping, too.

50 Shades of Green

Fifty Shades author E.L. James raked in more than $50 million in less than six months after her racy trilogy spread through suburban carpool lines and mah-jongg games like wildfire. The 50 Shades of Grey trilogy has outsold the Harry Potter series’ seven books in the UK, according to Amazon UK. An intense bidding war set Universal Pictures and Focus Features back $5 million for the film rights to the Fifty Shades trilogy.

Box office Blockbusters

According to Box Office Mojo, as of July 23, 2012, six of the top 10 opening-day box-office grosses are held by movies adapted from book series and include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (No. 1), Twilight: New Moon (No. 4), Twilight: Breaking Dawn (No. 5), Twilight: Eclipse (No. 6), The Hunger Games (No. 7), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (No. 10). Twilight: Eclipse holds the record for the widest openings/releases in box office history, playing in 4,468 theaters. The four Twilight films have a combined gross of $1,071,212,372.

to Be Continued…

The film adaptation of The Hunger Games’ second novel, Catching Fire, is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2013. After its success of the film based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sony announced plans to release adaptations of the series’ next two novels, with The Girl Who Played with Fire slated for a late 2013 debut, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest to follow. —D. 2 If By Sea…

A Journey Through Numbers

by Siobhan Kleinman Numbers are a big part of everyone’s life. We use numbers for just about everything. Most people have a favorite or lucky number they swear by. However, you may be surprised at the important role numbers play in life’s journey, not only in the ways numbers assist us in communicating by phone, locating an address on a GPS system, or finding your stateroom on board. Did you know that numbers teach you how to navigate your soul’s purpose? This kind of tracking system is called numerology.

Let’s use Kate Middleton as an example:

Numerology, which by definition is the study of numbers, dates back to the beginning of time. The most famous numerologist was Pythagoras, the mathematician and philosopher who brought the study to the Greeks and made numerology the basis of a new religious philosophy. Although times have changed, the root of numerology continues to be an integral part of our world today.

A person with a 3 is creative, artsy, nurturing, happy, optimistic and inspiring. While studying at the University of Scotland, Middleton met Prince William in 2001. After graduating, she worked as an accessory buyer with the clothing chain Jigsaw and as a catalog photographer, webpage designer and marketing officer for the family business, Party Pieces.

D.O.B.: 1/9/1982 (1 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 2) = 30 Take your sum and add its digits together. 30 will be (3 + 0) = 3 This equals liFe PaTh numBer 3

Next is the success number, which reveals your attitude toward life, and how you handle rewards and setbacks. This is found by adding the numeric month and date of birth. Since Middleton was born on January 9, her success number is 1.

Just as everybody has a horoscope sign based on the day they were born, everyone also has a number. Astrology tends to focus more on an individual’s personality traits, while numerology digs deeper into your inner being. Knowing your personal numbers will give insight and clues into relationships and offer a sneak peek into your karmic outlook. So, grab paper and a pen to start finding your lucky numbers. It’s fun and easy to learn and it might even bring you a bit of good fortune at love or in the casino during this voyage.

1 + 9 = 10 1+0=1 This equals suCCess numBer 1 Someone with a 1 is an innovator and a strong, powerful leader in their career and life. Engaged in 2010, Middleton married into royalty on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey — a success in anyone’s storybook!

The first number corresponds with your life path. To find this, simply add together the sum of your numeric date of birth. Take that sum and add the two digits together until you have a single digit number.

Your name is also an important part of you and each letter has a numeric equivalent to zoom in on another aspect of yourself. (Check out the Letter Chart, at the top of the opposite page, to decode the letters in your name.)

There are a few basic formulas that numerologists use to determine how a person interacts with the world. By using the examples and charts, you can figure out your own numbers.

The numbers usually don’t lie and it’s interesting to see how words can add up to their meaning. For instance, the word “balance” adds up to a 2 (see the number chart to see the numeric equivalent for each letter), which is the number for “balance.” The numeric value for the letters in the word “cruise” adds up to a “3” which equals fun and happiness. exploring the aspects of numerology is an exciting way to see how the pieces fit together. Siobhan Kleinman is a freelance writer covering a diverse range of topics including astrology, numerology, symbology, food and travel. A Chicago native, she was raised in an Irish family strong in their superstitions and beliefs in magical ways that can be found in everyday occurrences. Currently living in South Florida, Siobhan combines her writing with her experiences at SunflowerMagic.com.

what is your favorite place to visit in Italy? Giving you just one name would mean limiting the beauty of Italy, as there are thousands of wonderful places worthwhile to be visited. It also depends on the seasons. For example, I love the Amalfi Coast and Porto Cervo in Sardinia for summer holidays while Cortina is the best for the winter or Tuscany for autumn. Anyway, I am always in love with Venice, which represents a unique open-air museum, where the sky is your roof.

what is your favorite roberto Coin piece that reflects your love for Italy? When I designed the Vulcano Collection, I was inspired by my last holiday where I traveled around Italy. It is the perfect collection: sophisticated and delicate. what’s your favorite Italian wine? Definitely Amarone, produced in Verona. what’s your favorite Italian dish? Pasta, in all its versions. ItalIan jewelry desIgner roberto CoIn is passionate about his Italian heritage, his designs inspired by his culture. A native of Venice, one of Italy’s most beautiful cities, Coin learned to design and craft jewelry from the masters in Vicenza. Today, some of Coin’s biggest fans include celebrities Mila Kunis, Kristen Stewart, Petra Nemcova and Mena Suvari. Coin has developed admirers of his designs not only from a number of beautiful jewelry collections, but also through the creation of his unique signature, the ruby. According to ancient folklore, the ruby promotes health, happiness and a long life when in direct contact with the skin. With this in mind, Coin began placing a small ruby inside each piece, a secret gift of best wishes to each woman who wears his exclusive designs. The story of the ruby exhibits Coin’s true Italian craftsmanship. We wanted to know why he believes Italy is the perfect place to enjoy la dolce vita.
