His power was foreshadowed before his birth in 1758 by priests, who said that the stormy conditions of the night he was born signified the coming of a powerful ruler — powerful enough to threaten his uncle, King Kalaniopuu. Fabled Getaway The Kona Coast is not a new vacation destination; Hawaiian kings of yore established their getaway palaces here. The archipelago’s revered unifier, Kamehameha I, passed his final years on this shore, and his hand is still evident. This Big Island landmark, a short walk from Kailua-Kona’s pier, endures as a lively congregation. The Kona Coast’s superlative beaches claim their own worshipers. Punctuated by petrified lava formations, dozens of crystalline beaches dot the coast. Each owns a signature shade of sand, from jet-black to cloud-white to green-tinged. The sand of Kahaluu Beach Park, right in town, looks grey but when viewed close-up is actually salt-and-pepper. Tiny as it is, this sheltered cove is a peak snorkeling spot on the Big Island. Its shallow waters, fed by undersea springs, were calmed long ago by an enduring rock seawall built by Kamehameha I, who liked to swim here. Sea turtles and over a hundred species of neon-bright tropical fish fearlessly dart amongst snorkelers. A scenic drive south of the port, the liquid sapphire of Kealakekua Bay forms a marine sanctuary where playful spinner dolphins entertain human visitors. The bay provided anchorage to Captain Cook, yet became the backdrop to his death in February 1779 in an overheated by taking the tribe’s chief hostage, and was clubbed on the head in the resulting melee. The islanders who ended the captain’s life at age 50 gave him a chief’s burial, and a monument on the shores of Kealakekua Bay honors the greatest of Pacific explorers. If Cook had managed to get to the Puuhonua (the Place of Refuge), he might have been spared. In old Hawaii, the Puuhonua was a sanctuary for warriors in battle or those who had been condemned to death for eating a forbidden food, entering a place reserved for chiefs or breaking some other taboo. The offender had only to reach the Puuhonua and he could be forgiven. The Place of Refuge is now part of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, about 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona. Still considered sacred — to be approached reverently by all — it is a quiet link

Destination Today, Maui is a trophy destination. Two centuries ago, it was the seat of King Kamehameha’s united Hawaiian empire; its capital was Lahaina. In time, Lahaina became a busy, rowdy whaling port. The still-active port is now a National Historic District. Visitors relish the elegant Front Street shopping enclave and historic sites such as Old Lahaina Prison, built in 1853. A serpentine, 200-foot-wide banyan tree nearby, planted in 1872, serves as Lahaina’s people-watching perch. Kaanapali, a luxurious hotel zone near Lahaina, is most memorably reached by the Lahaina Kaanapali Railroad — known as the “Sugar Cane Train,” a vintage plantation train that chugs along Kaanapali Beach. Beaches line Maui’s 120-mile coastline, blanketed with volcanic sand shaded white, black, gold, green, burgundy, or what locals call “salt and pepper.” Some visitors spend their time on Maui’s sand. Others explore Hana Highway, “the Road to Hana,” considered one of the greatest scenic drives anywhere. Still other visitors choose to walk; Maui is a hiker’s paradise highlighted by Iao Valley State Monument, a 4,000-acre

rainforest park near Lahaina. A trail leads to a spectacular lookout and to Iao Needle, a jungle-carpeted, 1,200-foot rock tower once worshiped. Maui’s “peak experience” is Mount Haleakala, a dormant volcano in Haleakala National Park. The panoramic vista from its chilly, 10,000-foot summit — the Pacific’s highest point — takes in mountains, valleys, rainforest, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, ocean, and five of the eight Hawaiian islands. A submerged volcano, Molokini Crater, provides Maui’s most unusual snorkeling site. Its underwater dome teems with a thrilling variety of coral, plants and neonhued fish. Landlubbers can catch much of this Pacific life in the Maui Ocean Center’s massive walk-through aquarium. A Stitch in Time: Queen Liliuokalani's Quilt For many visitors, Iolani Palace’s most stirring object is “The Queen’s Quilt.” It is displayed in the Imprisonment Room where Queen Liliuokalani was held after American business interests overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy in 1895. Forbidden to leave the room, the queen created the kaleidoscopic quilt with scraps, ribbons and hatbands cut from her own royal garments. The nine-panel opus is nearly eight feet square. The quilt heartbreakingly conveys the queen’s sorrow, rage and hope in words and pictures. Hand-sewn designs depict icons and symbols: the royal family’s coat of arms; Hawaiian flags; a pocket watch; a jailhouse key; a helmet from the queen’s Guardsmen corps; the mythical phoenix bird, which rises from ashes; and a pueo owl, the royal house’s advisor. The unmistakable message: The Kingdom of Hawaii will rise again.

Crown Jewels of a Bygone Kingdom having 8,000 square feet of lanai porches open to Big Island breezes. Inside, it gleams not with Italian marble but with naturally patterned Hawaiian koa wood. The 140-foot-long Grand Hall is lined with portraits of Hawaiian monarchs and precious artworks bequeathed to the royal couple by other kings and queens. Gathering storm clouds. Kalakaua and his queen, Kapiolani, lived and led well. But they did not reign long or produce an heir. An 1887 coup d’état downgraded the throne into a constitutional monarchy with only ceremonial powers. Three years later, a dispirited and ailing Kalakaua died in San Francisco, at age 54. His final words were “Tell my people I tried.” The king’s sister, Liliuokalani, became queen of a fading kingdom.

Iolani Palace visitors tend to cluster before the Throne Room’s display of the Hawaiian royal family’s dazzling crown jewels: • The royal crowns of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani. They were fashioned in London in 1882 of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, opals, pearls and gem-cut Hawaiian kukui nuts. Their eight gold shanks represent the kingdom’s eight islands. • Queen Liliuokalani’s Diamond Butterfly Brooch. She purchased it in 1887 while attending Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in London. It is composed of 159 diamonds, with ruby eyes and a hidden spring that allows the butterfly’s wings to quiver.

But Iolani Palace still glittered. A children’s masquerade ball in 1892 was reported in newspapers around the world. Queen Liliuokalani, a musician and composer, hosted chamber music concerts in the palace’s double-height Gold Room; she often conducted performances from her koa-wood piano. Her lilting song “Aloha Oe” is known to every Hawaiian. But the storm erupted, transforming Hawaii forever. Sanford B. Dole as president. When Queen Liliuokalani and her supporters resisted, she was sentenced to house arrest in her own palace. She was liberated eight months later, becoming a living effigy of Hawaii’s royal past. Hawaii’s last monarch was long gone when President Clinton issued a formal apology to the native people of Hawaii a century later. The new government conscripted Iolani Palace as its administrative headquarters: a mere office building. Objects deemed unsuitable were auctioned and scattered to the four winds. When a new capitol building was dedicated in 1969, the restoration of Iolani Palace began, spearheaded by a grand-niece of Queen Kapiolani. The palace’s renaissance has remained one of the Aloha State’s most passionate projects, partially funded by tours and exhibits.  PRINCESS CRUISES DISCOVERY
