Hawaii’s Big Bang All things volcanic are celebrated in this fier y nature preserve, set less than an hour’s drive from Hilo. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was created in 1916 to preserve this primordial realm. Its 300,000 acres meander over half of the island of Hawaii, its varied ecosystems offering breathtaking roads and hiking routes, cultural and scientific revelations and primordial, volcanic landscapes. Volcanoes are business as usual on the Big Island, which is composed of five “shield volcanoes” — gushers that blew their tops eons ago. Hawaii’s two active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, are places of awe and caution within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Dormant Mauna Kea towers to the north.

The Big Island’s volcanoes are more than a state symbol and tourism draw. They are the island’s literal bedrock and the firmament of local faith and legend. To a Big Islander, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the smoking vermilion realm of lava lorded over by Pele, the fearsome volcano goddess. Pele is so ingrained in Big Island culture that “Thank God” is often spoken as “Thank Pele.” In a sense, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is dedicated to Pele: her power, her creations and her legend. She is said to inhabit the blazing precincts of Kilauea volcano. True to its name, meaning “spew and spread,” Kilauea encompasses a roiling lake of ever-advancing molten lava. Passage of Fire The park’s otherworldly setting is evident from a visitor’s first glimpse. Its grand entrance is Chain of Craters Road, a 20-mile path of marvels paved in 1928 and continually altered by lava flows. Travelers transported by coach, car, bicycle or their own two legs witness wonders like plumes of steam arising from the ocean, unleashed as subterranean lava tubes expel molten rock into the sea. More park landscaping includes sunken pit craters; red-hot lava streams; and Kipuka Nene forest, whose 1,100-year-old trees occupy a hill encircled by fresh, fuming lava. Amid this drama, brilliant butterflies and hummingbirdlike Hawaiian honeycreepers flit about. Occasionally, volcanic flux and toxic sulfur dioxide gas close the road.

The Chain of Craters leads to the park’s circular 11-mile Crater Rim Drive, which showcases primeval rainforest, desert and twisted lava stonescapes as it loops around Kilauea’s caldera. From this vantage point can be seen the divine hand of the fire goddess in destruction and creation as lava gushes about a thousand gallons per second, creating more land as it cools and hardens, eventually becoming forest. The Jaggar Museum, strategically placed on Crater Rim Drive, overlooks the Kilauea Caldera and its main crater, Halema‘uma‘u. Mesmerizing vistas yield rainbows that shimmer atop volcanic steam vents. The museum’s namesake, Philadelphia-born volcanology pioneer Thomas Jaggar, founded the on-site Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Jaggar became the first person to explore a smoking pit crater when, in 1912, he lowered himself into Halema‘uma‘u by a rope tied around his waist, Indiana Jones–style. To Kilauea’s west, Mauna Loa (“tall mountain”) overtakes the park’s panorama and confounds the imagination. At nearly 2,000 square miles, covering over half the Big Island, Mauna Loa can be spoken of only in superlatives: It is Earth’s biggest volcano and largest mountain. Greater in area and volume than Mount Everest, its peak sits 10.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean floor. Mauna Loa is among the planet’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since 1843, when record keeping began. Mauna Loa has not erupted since 1984, but park volcanologists lie in wait, constantly monitoring for signs of activity. Too Hot to Handle Today, the park’s eruptive turf is deemed too risky for habitation. But centuries ago, it housed farming communities that tilled rich volcanic soil and fished along coastal coves and cliffs. Numerous glimpses of this world remain. A myriad of hand-built rock shelters still stand on intricate age-old trails. They lead to prized resources that sustained life: fresh water, medicinal plants, wood, volcanic basalt for tools and bird nesting areas where food was readily available. Petroglyphs — rock paintings — at a site near the Jaggar Museum reveal an artistic spirit, capturing simple, timeless figures of hunters and families. In one spot, ancient footprints are preserved in now-petrified ash. Islanders and their kahuna priests believe they mark the dying steps of a desperate party of warriors, suffocated by a gaseous eruption in 1790. Some anthropologists say they’ve been there centuries longer. Visitors usually offer a moment of silence in remembrance of those gone before — long before.

The perpetually sunny port village of Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii’s leeward (Kona) coast, is a picture of small-town life in the Aloha State. Rooted in rich volcanic soil, warmed by the sun, shaded by afternoon clouds and refreshed by soft rains, these carefully tended trees produce the beans for a robust, aromatic beverage that is prized by connoisseurs everywhere. Limited production and a delicate, sweet and fruity aroma make Kona a treasure for discriminating java enthusiasts. The Kona Coffee Farmers Association explains that it has great strength, fine flavor and delicious aroma — three attributes that are rarely possessed by a single variety. Most coffees are blends of several different beans. BIG ISLAND BREW Kona coffee grows on the western side of Hawaii on the slopes of two volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Hualalai. The 56

coffee belt is 22 miles long and 2 miles wide; its elevation ranges from 500 to 3,200 feet. There are about 670 coffee farms, averaging 5 acres in size, on the approximately 3,900 acres devoted to grow ing Kona coffee. Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee commercially, and Hawaiian coffee, from the chain’s many islands , is the state’s fifth-largest agricultural commodity. Kona coffee is Kona’s economic mainstay, yet it represents only 1 percent of the world’s coffee production. Genuine Kona coffee carries a “100 percent Kona” seal on its bag. To qualify for that seal, the green coffee must be grown in north or south Kona, must be roasted on the Big Island and must be certified by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, meeting the standards for grades of prime or higher.

of crucial importance to the development of the Kona coffee industry, and many of their descendants are fifth-generation coffee farmers. MAKING THE GRADE Kona coffee’s production is a laborintensive process, meticulously followed bean by bean, to ensure the perfect cup. White blossoms known as “Kona snow” cover the trees at intervals from January to May. The flowers evolve into cherries, which ripen into a deep red. Since the cherries ripen at different times, workers must visit each farm several times in order to gather cherries that are at the peak of perfection — a key process that makes Kona one of the world’s most highly prized coffees. The peak harvest season runs from August to January. A good picker can bring in one 100-pound bag a day; three bags is considered excellent. The cherries are then pulped, dried, hulled and graded. In descending order, Kona coffee is graded as Extra Fancy,

BIRTH OF A LEGEND Don Francisco de Paula y Marin, Spanish physician and advisor to King Kamehameha the Great, brought the first coffee plants to the Hawaiian Islands in 1813, but they never took hold. Coffee production finally succeeded after the death of the next king, Kamehameha II, in 1825. He and Queen Kamamalu died of measles while visiting England, and their bodies were returned to Hawaii on the H.M.S. Blonde. On board was Chief Boki, governor of Oahu, who picked up coffee plants during a stop at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These trees were planted on Oahu as ornamental plants. In 1828, an American missionary, the Rev. Samuel Ruggles, planted cuttings from Oahu’s coffee plants on the Big Island, where they flourished. In 1892, an imported strain proved to be a stronger producer than Ruggles’ trees. That plant has evolved into sp. coffea arabica, var. kona typica. In the late 19th century, Japanese immigrants started small, family run coffee farms after serving out their contracts as laborers on large plantations. This hard-working group was

Fancy, Number One and Prime. Unlike most coffee cherries, which contain two beans, peaberry results from two beans fusing into one inside the cherry. Aficionados praise Kona’s Peaberry variety for its concentrated flavor. Only about five percent of the Kona coffee crop is Peaberry, which is graded into Peaberry No. 1 and Peaberry Prime. Most farmers sell their fresh coffee cherries to a processor, who combines the crops of several farms into one brand. Some farms create their own estate coffee, one variety that is cultivated, processed, roasted and marketed by the grower. Just as wines grown and produced on individual

estates have their own singular characteristics, each Kona estate produces a distinctive variety of Kona coffee. Judges at the Kona Cultural Festival, where coffees are judged as seriously as the finest wines, have described the very best Kona coffees as imparting an overwhelming floral fragrance, a mellow sweetness and a subtle winey taste, along with a medium mellow body and a delicate, floral acidity. Kona coffee carries the heritage of mountains and mists, rolling seas and tropical breezes. There can be no better way to begin your day than by savoring one of the world’s most highly valued coffees.

the per fect cuppa kona As with any fine ingredient, careful preparation will bring out the best in Kona coffee. The b e a n s s hou ld b e g r ou nd j u s t b e for e br e w i ng . A bu r r g r i nder w i l l pro duce t he most uniform grind. Use a medium grind for a drip coffee maker and a coarse grind for a French press. Use fresh, cold water. Filtered or bottled spring water is recommended. Soft water can dull the taste of the coffee. For a drip maker, add 2 tablespoons of ground Kona per 6 ounces of water. For an 8-cup French press, use 10 tablespoons of coffee and water boiled to between 195 and 200 degrees. For peak flavor, coffee brewed in a French press should be consumed within 20 minutes. Make the drink slightly stronger for iced Kona coffee. Cool to room temperature before pouring over ice. To preserve freshness, Kona coffee beans should be stored in their resealable airtight bag in the freezer (refrigerator air is too moist). Bring out the exact amount of beans you plan on using far enough in advance to allow them to reach room temperature (overnight, if you will be brewing them in the morning). — Mary Ann Hemphill

Its sheer ruggedness and wildness have come to symbolize this extraordinary Hawaiian island. The last thing modern visitors might expect to find amidst the Aloha State’s jungle-carpeted volcanic peaks is a gaping, cliff-walled canyon. But Kauai is the most geographically diverse island in the Hawaiian atoll, and there it is, in the center of this breathtaking isle: dramatic Waimea Canyon. The largest canyon in the entire Pacific, this chasm is indeed immense, at 10 miles long, 1 mile wide and almost 1 mile deep. It is often considered the can’tmiss attraction on the Garden Island, as Kauai is often known. Waimea Canyon State Park commands a nearly 2,000-acre ecosystem flaunting a misty microclimate and flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. The canyon can be discovered in a variety of ways. Most visitors choose a guided tour so they don’t miss a thing (including last call back to their ship). Helicopter tours are thrilling despite the clouds and mist drifting in and above the canyon. Fitness-minded visitors can opt to hike, usually with a local guide familiar with 45 miles of trails in and around the canyon. Twotiered, 800-foot Waipo’o Falls rewards hikers on one of Waimea’s most memorable trails, undertaken when the falls flow in winter and spring. However, road tours via Kauai’s Route 550 are the most popular way to see Waimea Canyon. The blacktop itself affords stunning views of the canyon, the coast

below and, with any luck, the island of Niihau just to the west. Highlights of this spectacularly scenic drive are numerous. Waimea Canyon Lookout offers an observation deck with sweeping vistas of three sides of the canyon, taking in buttes, crags, sheer cliffs and deep valley gorges. Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout, also dazzling, frequently showcases a view of Waipo’o Falls. Pu’u Hinahina Viewpoint, set higher, provides a dizzying, nearly vertical view of the canyon’s steep gorge and the green river valley directly below. Route 550 continues all the way up into Koke’e State Park. Here and at Kalalau Lookout, Kauai’s highest (and chilliest) spot accessible by road, visitors are rewarded with stirring views of the Napali Coast’s impenetrable knife-edged cliffs and primeval Kalahau Valley, seen in the movies King Kong and Jurassic Park. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail traverses down the cliffs, through waterfalls and to the ocean — a truly epic experience for any adventurer. Much less challenging is the lovely nature trail at the Koke’e Natural History Museum, which includes a crash course in Kauai geography. Kauai natives say Waimea Canyon is alive and never appears the same from one moment to the next. It is rare to find a visitor to Waimea Canyon who does not emerge changed, with a new understanding of beauty and tranquility.

Waipo’o Falls plunges more than 800 feet down a dramatic red-rock face in Waimea Canyon.

Photos barely do justice to Waimea Canyon’s vibrancy. Its dominant hue is a bright orange-red derived from Kauai’s iron-rich lava beds and dusty volcanic soil. Black striations in the canyon’s walls trace former lava flows from successive volcanic eruptions. The green swaths shown in the photo to the right are koa acacia trees and mokihana berries. The yellow blossoms are Kauai’s iliau, a yellow starburst on a stalk, and Waimea Canyon nehe, a flowering herb that grows only here and is catnip to the canyon’s feral goats. The orange and brown creatures on the run are Kauai’s ubiquitous wild chickens. Chartreuse streaks could be the anianiau, a tiny Hawaiian finch. Crimson masses are hibiscus bushes, and flashes of lipstick red might be red-crested cardinals and apapane honeycreepers winging by. The sky above Waimea Canyon is an impressive azure, and the silver ribbon down in the gorge is Waimea River, sometimes placid, often a torrent. The prismatic rainbows everywhere you turn are said to be the work of the rainbow maiden, a graceful village girl named Ua, who was captured by the canyon’s waterfall god. A chief’s son rescued (and married) Ua, but her gift to Waimea Canyon remains.

Kauai is the remnant of a towering, ancient volcano arising from the ocean floor. When the volcano erupted and collapsed eons ago, its lava formed a mountain: Mount Waialeale. Its striking geography made this mile-high peak one of the wettest spots on earth; today, its incessant rainfall totals nearly 40 feet per year. Ages ago, the mountain’s flooding runoff created myriad streams and gullies. And then a mighty earthquake tumbled these waterways into one, the tumultuous Waimea River. Over millennia, the river bored into Mount Waialeale’s soft volcanic rock, forming the gullies of Waimea Canyon. Ongoing eruptions spill more lava into and onto the canyon, making it ever taller, while the river perpetually erodes the lava base and cliffs, deepening the contours of Waimea Canyon.

their blubber oil, humpbacks are now protected, supplying only pure joy to their two-legged mammalian brethren. GETTING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Whales can often be spotted from Maui’s west and south beaches and overlooks, but dedicated expeditions furnish a close-up view of these magnificent mammals. Whale-watching boats are prohibited from getting closer than 100 yards to a whale and 300 yards to a humpback mother. But whales are inquisitive and will often glide right up to boats. Those who’ve witnessed a torpedo-shaped leviathan breaching ( jumping from the water) say it’s a thrill, and seeing a mother nuzzling her precious calf is unforgettable.

A MUTUAL LOVE AFFAIR Year after year, these oceanic behemoths streak halfway down the planet toward Maui, known as the Valley Isle. The humpbacks come to court, mate and give birth in Maui’s western and southern mountain-shadowed coves and sun-warmed bays. These annual Maui vacationers bask under the fascinated gaze of whalewatchers and the utmost protection under the law. In 1992, Congress designated a region of the Aloha State’s waters, from the shore to a depth of 600 feet, as the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Maui’s shallow port of Lahaina grew up as the boisterous destination of American whaling ships and crews. Now Lahaina leads in whale watching. Once hunted for their keratin “whalebone” and

Numerous types of whale-seeking expeditions depart right from Lahaina’s tender dock. During whalewatching season, mid-November through mid-May, the pier buzzes with activity. Tour vessels range from ferry-like stabilized ships with open viewing decks to zippy smaller boats and inflatable crafts. Most tours are led by cetacean (whale) biologists happy to share their knowledge about humpback activity. You’ll soon learn the way to spot a humpback: Look for the whale’s “footprint,” a plume of water spouted from the creature’s blowhole. Thar she blows! HUMPBACK ACROBATICS AND SYMPHONICS Maui whale watchers find these enormous yet agile creatures immensely entertaining. Humpbacks are star jumpers, whose breaching leap gave them their name; they appear humpbacked as their bodies curve back into the water. Another impressive athletic move is “lobtailing,” in which the whale lifts its tail and smacks it against the water, creating a sonic boom. Each whale’s tail-fluke markings are different, like human fingerprints — that’s how landlubbers identify them. Hydrophone speakers on whale-watching boats broadcast the male humpback’s eerie, rumbling songs. Cetacean biologists believe the song is meant to lure mates or taunt rivals. Those lucky enough to witness a humpback “spyhopping” — raising its eye out of the water to peer at them — sense a definite kinship. Evolutionarily, humans and humpbacks, both mammals, parted ways eons ago. But we still share the seven seas, and our love of the Valley Isle of Maui.

Pai‘ea Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, was a compelling figure in history. His power was foreshadowed before his birth in 1758 by priests who said that the stormy conditions of the night he was born signified the coming of a powerful ruler — powerful enough to threaten his uncle, King Kalani‘opu‘u. Such was the belief in this prophecy that the child’s parents hid him from the world until age five, when his uncle no longer feared being overthrown.

The young Pai‘ea grew up to take the throne at age 24. He would become one of Hawaii’s most revered rulers, honored in monuments and other memorials throughout the islands. He is best known for unifying the islands into one nation. Before Kamehameha, they were segmented into different districts and chiefs often sought to expand their lands through conquest. Noble birth Kamehameha was born into a family of nobles from North Kohala on the island of Hawaii. His mother, Keku’iapoiwa, and her mother before her were part of the revered Keawe royal bloodline. Records are unclear, but it is believed that Kamehameha’s father was Keoua, the grandson of a chief who once ruled a large portion of the islands. Kamehameha lived in the court of Moi Alapai the Great, where the future king developed the strategic skills necessary to become a great warrior and honed his much-needed diplomatic skills. His abilities as a fighter were put to the test several years before he gained the throne. Upon the arrival of foreigners, Kamehameha is said to have taken part in a skirmish against Captain James Cook, the British Royal Navy’s distinguished navigator and explorer. Cook had been on the island on three separate occasions during the 1770s. By his second visit, the atmosphere on the islands had grown tense. Many Hawaiians had once believed Cook was the god Lono, closely associated with the season of peace, but their faith was waning. Tensions escalated and Cook was killed in a scuffle over a small boat between islanders and his crew. As a result of this encounter, Kamehameha’s fame as a warrior grew. With his weapons of choice, brute strength and the occasional treaty, he was able to gain control of large portions of the islands.

Taking power, making change The turning point came in 1782, with the death of King Kalani‘opu‘u. The king’s son, Kiwalao, ascended to the throne. Soon after this coronation, Kamehameha gathered support from other chiefs and prepared for battle. It was a long struggle, but Kiwalao fell in 1795 and Kamehameha’s reign began. He spent the succeeding years gaining full control over all the islands and uniting them, using the same fearlessness that had won him previous victories. He single-handedly abolished the islands’ feudalistic system and established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810, uniting all the islands into one nation. He then strengthened the kingdom economically and militarily by establishing the sandalwood industry and acquainting himself with British weaponry and military tactics. In his 30s, Kamehameha married Ka‘ahumanu, daughter of a powerful chief. She became his favorite wife and trusted advisor — so much so that, when his second wife gave birth to a son, Kamehameha made his favorite wife the child’s guardian. Perhaps even more remarkable, he gave equal control of the kingdom to his beloved Ka‘ahumanu. This act was unprecedented, given that, traditionally, Hawaiian men and women were often separated based on gender, with strictly divided roles. Kamehameha the Great died from an unknown illness in 1819, but his descendants ruled Hawaii until 1872, and his memory still lives on. Four statues have been erected to honor him. One is across from ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu, the royal residence. One stands at Kamehameha’s birthplace in the district of Kohale on the Big Island and one is in the town of Hilo, also on the Big Island. The fourth is at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. They are tangible reminders of the strength invested in these majestic islands by one of Hawaii’s greatest rulers.

It’s believed that surfing evolved when they parlayed their skills handling outrigger and double-hulled canoes into catching and riding the coastal waves using a single slab of wood, first body-boarding and then standing.

MAKING THE SPORT Historians say the Polynesians brought the sport of surfing with them when they immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands around 400 A.D. Stand-up surfing was documented as far back as the 15th century in Hawaiian chants, called “mele,” which were sung by elders and passed on to succeeding generations as an oral history of their culture. In the late 18th centur y, when British explorer Capt. James Cook landed in the Hawaiian Islands, along with Western missionaries, surfing seemed to disappear for a while. Some historians believe this happened because gambling was outlawed at the time and Polynesians had been fond of betting on the size of waves and the length of a ride.

As cool, hip and cutting-edge as surfing is today, Hawaii’s favorite sport has actually been around a long time.

Of course, surfing wasn’t suppressed for long. It reemerged and was introduced to America, Australia and Europe in the early 1900s, thanks to a world tour by Duke Kahanamoku, the revered Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion, local surfing legend and all-around waterman. Another Hawaiian, George Freeth, the world’s first professional surfer, promoted the sport by conducting surfing demos at California’s Redondo Beach in 1907. By the 1950s and 1960s, the surfing lifestyle of Hawaii, California and Australia was immortalized in popular culture in movies like Gidget and Ride the Wild Surf. In the 1980s, surfers looked to skateboarding and snowboarding to feed their passion when the surf wasn’t up, substituting the street and the snow for waves. The sports have fed off of each other, and all three claim millions of devotees. Today, surfing is more popular than ever, though ultra-high-tech boards long ago replaced the rigid, heav y wooden planks used by the sport’s pioneers. Still, no matter how you do it, the point remains the same: Find the perfect wave and ride it for all you’re worth.

The famed Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the top draws in the city by the bay, where majestic Golden Gate Bridge rises a breathtaking 220 feet at mid-point. A ferry takes visitors across the bay to Alcatraz, which is still remembered as one of the nation’s most feared prisons, decades after it shut down and became a museum. Chinatown also beckons, offering a heady mix of old traditions and new attitudes. Lovely parks and exquisite botanical gardens make this Canadian port a nature-loverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delight. One of the most impressive is Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre forested peninsula filled with beaches and walking trails, including a seven-mile-long seawall. In the center of the city, atop Little Mountain, sits Queen Elizabeth Park. Once a humble quarry, it is now a sunken garden blooming with shrubs and flower beds and housing an aviary for more than 100 free-flying birds. Eastern inspiration blossoms at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Chinese artisans created the garden with materials imported from China and used traditional building methods dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
