All hands are on deck as a ship approaches Hilo, a paradise of black-sand beaches, tropical rainforest and volcanic mountains. Hilo has many jungle elements: a rushing river; the prismatic Rainbow Falls; the United States’ only rainforest zoo, Panaewa; and the spectacular Tropical Botanical Garden, overlooking Onomea Bay. Yet it also offers attractions for those in search of history and culture. Banyan Drive, a panoramic promenade with majestic banyan trees forming an arch overhead, is steps from the pier. Banyan strollers often drop into Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, a serene Japanese estate with photo-ready orchids, pagodas and goldfish ponds. A footbridge leads from Banyan Drive to Coconut Island, offering views of Mauna Kea’s snowy summit. Hilo’s bayfront, Kamehameha Drive, is lined with renovated vintage storefronts. Its thriving downtown boasts Art Deco treasures like the Palace Theater, and unique shops and art galleries. Cultural lures include the sobering Pacific Tsunami Museum, which looks at the phenomena of giant waves that have pummeled Hawaii, including one especially devastating wave in 1946; the Imiloa Astronomy Center and planetarium; and the Lyman House, which tells the story of Hawaiian missionaries. One of the most enthralling stories is the ancient tale of King Kamehameha, who is still revered in Hilo. According to legend, it was prophesied that whoever moved the 7,000-pound Naha Stone would unite the Hawaiian islands and become a great king. With a little help from the gods, a 14-year-old named Kamehameha lifted the stone and eventually fulfilled the prophecy. The Naha Stone, set in front of the Hilo Public Library, still astonishes.

f ier y foundation Volcanoes have been part of Hawaii’s identity for millions of years, nowhere more strongly than on the Big Island. Kilauea, which erupted forcefully and destructively in 2018, is one of two active volcanoes that islanders have learned to live with.

REALM OF THE GODDESS To a Big Islander, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the smoking vermilion dominion of lava lorded over by Pele, the fearsome volcano goddess. Pele is so ingrained in Big Island culture that “Thank God” is often spoken as “Thank Pele.” Centuries ago, the park’s land housed farming communities that tilled rich volcanic soil and fished along coastal coves and cliffs. A myriad of handbuilt rock shelters stood on intricate, age-old trails, leading to prized resources that sustained life: freshwater, medicinal plants, wood, volcanic basalt for tools and bird nesting areas where food was readily available. Petroglyphs (rock paintings) revealed an artistic spirit, capturing simple, timeless figures of hunters and families. In one spot, ancient footprints were found preserved in petrified ash. Islanders and their kahuna priests believe they marked the dying steps of a desperate party of warriors, suffocated by a gaseous eruption in 1790. Some anthropologists say they’ve been there centuries longer.

Even before the 2018 eruption, Kilauea encompassed a roiling lake of ever-advancing molten lava, remaining true to its name, which means “spew and spread.” Visitors could witness plumes of steam arising from the ocean as Kilauea expelled molten rock into the sea through subterranean lava tubes. Sunken pit craters and red-hot lava streams were part of the park ’s landscape, as was Kipuka Nene forest, where 1,100-year-old trees occupied a hill encircled by fresh, fuming lava. Amid this drama, brilliant butterflies and hummingbird-like Hawaiian honeycreepers would flit about. Kilauea occasionally created inconvenience as volcanic flux and toxic sulfur dioxide gas closed the road entering the park.

COLOSSAL COMPANION To Kilauea’s west, Mauna Loa (“tall mountain”) confounds the imagination. At nearly 2,000 square miles, covering over half the Big Island, it can be spoken of only in superlatives: It is Earth’s biggest volcano and largest mountain. Greater in area and volume than Mount Everest, its peak sits 10.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean floor. Mauna Loa is among the planet’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since 1843, when record keeping began. The most recent explosion, in 1984, caused no fatalities, although villages were destroyed by eruptions in 1926 and 1950. Still, destruction is not always the end result of this force of nature. The city of Hilo owes its beginnings to the late-19th-century lava flows on which it was built.

The Big Island’s volcanoes are more than a state symbol and tourism draw. They are the island’s literal bedrock, the foundation on which it was built, and the firmament of local faith and legend. They are business as usual on the Big Island, which is composed of five “shield volcanoes” — gushers that blew their tops eons ago. Kilauea and Hawaii’s other active volcano, Mauna Loa, sit within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a vast preserve less than an hour’s drive from Hilo. Dormant Mauna Kea towers to the north.

Two centuries after King Kamehameha the Great chose Kailua-Kona’s bay for his royal dynasty’s Big Island beach retreat, the allure of its sand-and-lavarock shoreline, crystalline waters and vibrant sea life continue to endure.

Today, the Kona Coast is open to anyone seeking the beauty of the Big Island’s beaches. And while each of these waterfront wonders offers a unique experience of its own, they are all equally breathtaking.

MAGIC ACT White Sands Beach and its rainbow sunsets await four miles south of Kailua-Kona on the Kona Coast Scenic Byway. This beloved beach is also called Magic Sands for its vanishing act. After a rain, the sands disappear, revealing petrified lava sheets and boulders birthed by Kailua-Kona’s backyard volcano, Hualalai, which last erupted in 1801. Within hours of a shower, the sand reappears mysteriously, as soft and white as confectioner’s sugar. The beach’s waters are the 56

placid blue of a Tiffany box, concealing a lively current that energizes snorkelers, swimmers and splashers.

NATURE’S AQUARIUM Just down the road, Kahalu’u Beach Park is a rocky cove with sparse sand. But the action here is aquatic. The cove’s natural rock wave break creates tame waters with a constant temperature in the low eighties. Local fish love lounging at Kahalu’u; as a result, swimmers and snorkelers are stunned by kaleidoscopic species like electric green and violet parrotfish, neon-blue and gold damselfish, and the Aloha State’s official fish, the yellow-backed, black-belted humuhumu. Meanwhile, Hawaii’s sacred honu sea turtles lord over the scene like the stars they are.

SNORKEL MIRACLE Two Step Beach, 20 worthwhile miles south of Kailua-Kona, is named for its route into the water. Step off its rocky margins and you’re amidst the Big Island’s most breathtaking shore snorkeling spot. Two Step’s lucid waters burst with balletic schools of Hawaiian flagtails, yellow tangs, giant angelfish and coral beds in the psychedelic hues of a ‘60s album jacket. Mornings bring an unforgettable opportunity to swim with dolphins in the wild as exuberant Hawaiian spinner dolphins put on impromptu shows. PACIFIC PARADISE

Of the three fantasy beaches in Kehaka Kai State Park north of Kailua-Kona, Mahai’ula is reachable without hiking or scrambling over lava rocks. Its crescent of snowy sand is peppered with lava flecks and rimmed with shady palms and kiawe (Hawaiian mesquite trees heaven sent for napping or reading). The aquamarine water is animated by rolling waves made for jumping over or darting under. Mahai’ula surfers and shy Hawaiian monk seals congregate at the beach’s Kawaili Point near a stone fishing goddess who has watched over the bay for a millennium.

ANCIENT INSPIRATION Honokohau Beach furnishes body-and-soul immersion in the Kona Coast. It’s tucked into Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, the site of a traditional Kona seafaring and fishing settlement. The park’s nearly intact treasures (heiau shrines, home foundations, ingenious fishponds and petroglyph rock drawings) are highlights of a four-mile hike. Honokohau (a small, serene swimming beach) commingles swaths of sand, lava beds from Hualalai’s eruptions and teeming tidal ponds. Visitors turtle-gaze at majestic honu while soaking up the beach’s caressing waters and palpable mana: its living spirit.

Misplaced as it may seem, this familiar feeling can be attributed to the opening scene from the film Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Kauai’s abundance of natural wonders presents a real conundrum: which of its many breathtaking attractions to experience? Fifty miles of blissful beaches? Jaw-dropping Waimea Canyon? Luckily for visitors, Kauai is compact enough to see it all via the main road — until the road ends, and then one must take to the sea or the air.

When the volcano erupted and collapsed eons ago, its lava formed a mountain: Mount Waialeale. Its striking geography made this mile-high peak one of the wettest spots on Earth; today, its incessant rainfall totals nearly 40 feet 60

Highlights of this spectacularly scenic drive are numerous. Waimea Canyon Lookout offers an observation deck with sweeping vistas, taking in buttes, crags, sheer cliffs and deep-valley gorges. Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout, also dazzling, frequently showcases a view of Waipo’o Falls. Pu’u Hinahina Viewpoint, set higher, provides a dizzying, nearly vertical view of the canyon’s steep gorge and the green river valley directly below. Route 550 continues all the way up into Koke’e State Park. Here and at Kalalau Lookout, Kauai’s highest (and chilliest) spot accessible by road, visitors are rewarded with stirring views of the Napali Coast’s impenetrable knife-edged cliffs and primeval Kalahau Valley, seen in the movies King Kong and Jurassic Park. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail traverses down the cliffs, through waterfalls and to the ocean — a truly epic experience for any adventurer. Much less challenging is the lovely nature trail at the Koke’e Natural History Museum, which includes a crash course in Kauai geography. Kauai natives say Waimea Canyonis alive, never appearing the same from one moment to the next. And it is rare to find a visitor to Waimea Canyon who does not emerge changed.

per year. Ages ago, the mountain’s flooding runoff created myriad streams and gullies. And then a mighty earthquake tumbled these waterways into one: the tumultuous Waimea River. Over millennia, the river bored into Mount Waialeale’s soft volcanic rock, forming the gullies of Waimea Canyon. Ongoing eruptions spill more lava into and onto the canyon, making it ever taller, while the river perpetually erodes the lava base and cliffs, deepening the contours of Waimea Canyon.

The last thing visitors might expect to find amidst the Aloha State’s jungle-carpeted volcanic peaks is a gaping, cliff-walled canyon. But there it is, in the center of this breathtaking isle: dramatic Waimea Canyon. The largest canyon in the entire Pacific, this chasm is indeed immense, at 10 miles long, one mile wide and almost one mile deep. It is often considered the can’tmiss attraction on the Garden Island, as Kauai is often known. Waimea Canyon State Park commands a nearly 2,000-acre ecosystem flaunting a misty microclimate and flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth. The canyon can be discovered in a variety of ways. Most choose a guided tour so they don’t miss a thing (including last call back to their ship). Helicopter tours are thrilling despite the clouds and mist drifting in and above the canyon. Fitnessminded visitors can opt to hike, usually with a local guide familiar with the 45 miles of trails in and around the canyon. However, road tours via Kauai’s Route 550 are the most popular way to see Waimea Canyon. The blacktop itself affords stunning views of the canyon, the coast below and, with any luck, the island of Niihau just to the west.

Hollywood has maintained a lasting romance with Wailua Falls, and it’s easy to see why. By Ryan Slattery

Hawaii’s lush, tropical greenery, steep canyons and frequent midday rains create the perfect conditions for some of the most remarkable waterfalls found anywhere in the world. Nowhere perhaps is this truer than on Kauai. While some of these incredible waterfalls can only be seen by helicopter, plenty of others are easily accessible — sometimes only a short hike away. One of the most spectacular, and easiest to visit, is Wailua Falls. The striking 85-foot-high marvel is best viewed safely from above, and visitors can often see a rainbow in the mist at the base when the sun hits at just the right angle. And if the famous falls look familiar you can pat yourself on the back. Sharp-eyed television fanatics may recognize Wailua Falls from the opening credits of the 1970s-hit television show Fantasy Island.

Getting to Fern Grotto is only part of the adventure. Knowledgeable riverboat guides share the history of the tropical valley and entertain with traditional Hawaiian songs during a two-mile boat ride up Kauai’s Wailua River. Upon arrival, a short paved path leads to the grotto — a large, fern-covered cave which resulted from moisture dripping down from the irrigation of sugarcane growing on the cliff plateau. Here, visitors will often encounter couples exchanging wedding vows. The grotto’s steep walls serve as a near-perfect echo chamber, creating a natural amphitheater for musicians who serenade the lovers with the “Hawaiian Wedding Song.” 62

The most difficult decision you’ll make on your visit to Maui is choosing which of the dozens of sea adventures to take on. Whether it’s surfing, snorkeling or just relaxing on one of Maui’s pristine white-, red- or black-sand beaches, the options are seemingly endless. With that in mind, here is some help in making the most of your time. Let’s start, naturally, with the beach. Of Maui’s 120 miles of coastline, there are 30 miles of accessible beaches each with its own character and activities, so finding one to match your interests should be a walk in the park — or rather, the beach. One of Maui’s largest is Makena Beach, or as it’s commonly called, “Big Beach.” Stretching for 1.5 miles and at points 100 feet wide, Makena is a

perfect destination for swimming, picnicking and sunbathing. Visitors will find that many of Maui’s beaches are ideal for slipping on a mask and fins and swimming among the coral reefs for a glimpse of colorful schools of fish and even sea turtles. However, the most popular snorkeling spots can be found across the island and include the northernmost portion of Kaanapali Beach, the marine preserve Honolua Bay, Honekeana Bay — where snorkelers have a high chance of spotting a sea turtle — and Mokule’ia Bay (also known as Slaughterhouse Beach), where schools of silver fish, zebra moray eels and parrot fish are known to frequent. Those looking for a little more action can catch a wave with surfing lessons at one of Maui’s less

hazardous surf spots. Beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei have smaller, more manageable surf breaks that help beginners ease into Hawaii’s popular pastime. As an alternative to “hanging ten,” visitors can find an array of places from which to rent stand-up paddleboards, while thrill-seekers will find that several beaches — Kanaha Beach and Hookipa Beach, included — are known worldwide for the idyllic windsurfing conditions. Boat trips are also a popular activity — from sunset cruises to sport fishing to whale watching — with several tour companies offering the chance to spot humpback whales in the waters between Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Whatever outing you choose for your Maui trip, just be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen.

r o y al f a mil y A fierce warrior and able diplomat, Kamehameha the Great united the islands of Hawaii into a single kingdom ruled by his descendants for five generations. By Maria Blanco

Pai‘ea Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, was a compelling figure in history. His power was foreshadowed before his birth in 1758 by priests who said that the stormy conditions of the night he was born signified the coming of a powerful ruler — powerful enough to threaten his uncle, King Kalani‘opu‘u. Such was the belief in this prophecy that the child’s parents hid him from the world until age 5, when his uncle no longer feared being overthrown.

The young Pai‘ea grew up to take the throne at age 24. He would become one of Hawaii’s most revered rulers, honored in monuments and other memorials throughout the islands. He is best known for unifying the islands into one nation. Before Kamehameha, they were segmented into different districts, and chiefs often sought to expand their lands through conquest. Noble Birth Kamehameha was born into a family of nobles from North Kohala on the island of Hawaii. His mother, Keku’iapoiwa, and her mother before her were part of the revered Keawe royal bloodline. Records are unclear, but it is believed that Kamehameha’s father was Keoua, the grandson of a chief who once ruled a large portion of the islands. Kamehameha lived in the court of Moi Alapai the Great, where the future king developed the strategic skills necessary to become a great warrior and honed his much-needed diplomatic skills. His abilities as a fighter were put to the test several years before he gained the throne. Upon the arrival of foreigners, Kamehameha is said to have taken part in a skirmish against Captain James Cook, the British Royal Navy’s distinguished navigator and explorer. Cook had been on the island on three separate occasions during the 1770s. By his second visit, the atmosphere on the islands had grown tense. Many Hawaiians had once believed Cook was the god Lono, closely associated with the season of peace, but their faith was waning. Tensions escalated and Cook was killed in a scuffle over a small boat between islanders and his crew. As a result of this encounter, Kamehameha’s fame as a warrior grew. With his weapons of choice, brute strength and the occasional treaty, he was able to gain control of large portions of the islands.

Taking Power, Making Change The turning point came in 1782, with the death of King Kalani‘opu‘u. The king’s son, Kiwalao, ascended to the throne. Soon after this coronation, Kamehameha gathered support from other chiefs and prepared for battle. It was a long struggle, but Kiwalao fell in 1795 and Kamehameha’s reign began. He spent the succeeding years gaining full control over all the islands and uniting them, using the same fearlessness that had won him previous victories. He single-handedly abolished the islands’ feudalistic system and established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810, uniting all the islands into one nation. He then strengthened the kingdom economically and militarily by establishing the sandalwood industry and acquainting himself with British weaponry and military tactics. In his 30s, Kamehameha married Ka‘ahumanu, daughter of a powerful chief. She became his favorite wife and trusted advisor — so much so that, when his second wife gave birth to a son, Kamehameha made his favorite wife the child’s guardian. Perhaps even more remarkable, he gave equal control of the kingdom to his beloved Ka‘ahumanu. This act was unprecedented, given that, traditionally, Hawaiian men and women were often separated based on gender, with strictly divided roles. Kamehameha the Great died from an unknown illness in 1819, but his descendants ruled Hawaii until 1872, and his memory still lives on. Four statues have been erected to honor him. One is across from ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu, the royal residence. One stands at Kamehameha’s birthplace in the district of Kohale on the Big Island, and one is in the town of Hilo, also on the Big Island. The fourth is at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. They are tangible reminders of the strength invested in these majestic islands by one of Hawaii’s greatest rulers.

Just 30 minutes from Waikiki stands a National Historic Landmark commemorating one of the most pivotal moments in U.S. history.

A calm refuge just to the west of downtown Honolulu, Pearl Harbor is one of the most revered sites in all of Hawaii. The harbor’s watery expanse of islands and inlets have made Pearl Harbor — named for the pearl oysters that were once harvested there — an ideal anchorage for U.S. Navy ships since the 1800s. As scenic as the area is, the name “Pearl Harbor” has become forever synonymous with December 7, 1941, when Japanese fighter planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet stationed there, launching the country into World War II. Besides the destruction of nearly 200 aircraft, all eight U.S. battleships were destroyed, sinking four. The only battleship to not be raised was the USS Arizona, which rests just below the water’s surface near Ford Island. Now an integral part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, the hallowed USS Arizona Memorial marks the final resting place for many of the men who lost their lives during the attack on the ship. Pearl Harbor’s other historic sites include the Battleship Missouri Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and the Pacific Aviation Museum. A tour of the USS Arizona Memorial begins at the visitor center, where guests can view plaques honoring the many lives lost, as well as watch an informative film that chronicles that tragic day with actual footage of the attack. From there, guests board a boat shuttle to the iconic white structure that floats above the sunken ship. A marble wall in the shrine room is inscribed with the names of 80

the men who died here, a solemn and moving experience of the memorial. Through openings in the center of the structure, visitors can peer down into the water at the sunken hull of the Arizona, just below the surface. Another popular site for visitors to Pearl Harbor is the Battleship Missouri Memorial, completing the circle on the Pacific Fleet’s role in WWII. Commissioned in June 1944, the USS Missouri, or “Mighty Mo,” fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, served in the Korean War and was later modernized for support during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The ship is best known for holding the surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945, when General Douglas MacArthur and Japanese representatives signed documents that formally ended WWII. Now a living museum on Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row, visitors can peruse the many exhibits that span three wars and nearly 50 years of service. Stroll the Surrender Deck for a view of the signed documents that ended the war. Wander past officers’ quarters, galleys and even dental facilities as you explore the multiple decks of the largest and last battleship built, a floating city nearly 900 feet long, 20 stories tall and weighing 60,000 tons. One of the ship’s most impressive sights is the massive 16-inch guns that were capable of firing 2,700-pound shells a distance of 23 miles. While December 7, 1941 is known as a “date which will live in infamy,” Pearl Harbor is still an active U.S. naval base, honoring the past while looking ahead to the future.

apia As the capital of Samoa, Apia is home to about a quarter of the nation’s population. Its downtown is a mix of shopping, government buildings and commercial offices. The scenery is-especially beautiful at O Le Pupu-Pue National Park, a popular hiking spot that shelters 42 different species of birds. The capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago is the home of Mount Pioa, known as “the rainmaker” because of the moisture-bearing clouds it attracts. Lovely parks and exquisite botanical gardens make this Canadian port a nature-loverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delight. One of the most impressive is Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre forested peninsula filled with beaches and walking trails, including a seven-mile-long seawall. In the center of the city, atop Little Mountain, sits Queen Elizabeth Park. Once a humble quarry, it is now a sunken garden blooming with shrubs and flower beds and housing an aviary for more than 100 free-flying birds. Eastern inspiration blossoms at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Chinese artisans created the garden with materials imported from China and used traditional building methods dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
