CHANGING FILTRATION TOMORROW'S FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY TO YOUR VEHICLE, TODAY Whatever the engine, effective filtration is vital for reliable, smooth running operation. When choosing filtration products for your vehicle fleet, why should you buy Racor which you may not be aware of, when you could buy cheaper with a brand you are more familiar with? There are indeed many aspects to convey when addressing this question, and it is perhaps a question you hadn’t thought of asking… Whatever the engine, effective filtration is vital for reliable, smooth running operation. When choosing filtration products for your vehicle fleet, why should you buy Racor which you may not be aware of, when you could buy cheaper with a brand you are more familiar with? There are indeed many aspects to convey when addressing this question, and it is perhaps a question you hadn’t thought of asking… Racor is a division of the Parker Hannifin Corporation, a global innovation leader specialising in fuel, air, and oil filtration systems for internal combustion engines and fuel delivery. Founded in 1969, Racor now has a global presence as a Tier 1 supplier, with products to suit any market or application with an engine. Product portfolios include fuel filter water separators, high flow filter vessels, oil filter systems, automatic transmission filters, engine air filters, crankcase ventilation filter systems and many more customised OEM solutions. With over 100 active patents, 45 years of media development, and a range of proprietary technologies, Parker Racor is 100% focused on developing filtration that enables operators to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Racor’s filtration products are manufactured in-house at their state-of-the-art production facilities in Europe as well as North America and other Global locations. Specification, process and quality assurance is in line with the highest international standards. Every Parker Racor filtration product delivered to
the independent aftermarket is made with the same materials, design specification and engineering excellence as the original equipment. FACTS was invited to visit their European site in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, where we were able to see for ourselves what sets Parker Racor apart from others, an insight into how the filtration products are developed and tested, and why Racor should be on your next purchase order.
R&D and testing
The tour of Parker Racor began with a visit to their highly impressive high-tech laboratory and testing centre. In order to meet OEM requirements, ongoing investment in research and development is needed to continually to offer customers better solutions. Racor’s filtration technology would not be world leading if it wasn’t for such extensive development which goes into each product, necessary to achieve such standards. In the lab, it was clear the level of investment of advanced equipment including various test rigs to assess water separation, particle removal efficiency, vibration testing, as well as an advanced Engine Test Cell, capable of testing 500KW diesel engines. The Test Cell is unlike any product testing equipment we have seen before and is located in a dedicated area of the lab where exhaustive test cycles were currently underway. The Test Cell is able to simulate ‘real working life’ conditions - taking into account vehicle loads, performance requirements and environmental factors. Every product is fully tested across a strict range of performance criteria in order to ensure the optimum filter solution for each application. Steven Wilson, Test & Development Manager commented: “Parker Racor is continually investing in its engineering facilities
www.OnRouteMagazine.co.uk
and it is a centre of excellence for engine filtration products. Covering all engineering disciplines, we are capable of developing innovative and patented filtration systems for todays and the next generation of engine. An idea or concept could take up to 2 years before it is launched into full product. Whether testing prototypes from soft tooling or validating production tooling, this is all conducted on site. A programme for a new system may require 20 to 30 types of tests. We can simulate temperatures as cold as -40oC, stop/start pressure pulsation, analysis concentrations of biodiesel in fuels and understand how different water disruption curves effect water separation by measuring water droplet sizes even at 1micron. This is fraction of our capabilities but most of customers are amazed by our ability to design and produce test rigs to simulate their actual applications. This investment in testing and developing enables Racor’s products to be robust, reliable and guarantee that the highest quality of filtration is maintained throughout the life of the product.” Personally, we found the laboratory tour a fascinating part of our visit to Parker Racor, simply because it is more often than not the area you almost never see. Derek Martin, Market Development Manager - Aftermarket, told us that customers are especially keen to see their impressive state-of-the-art labs: “For the aftermarket, it is the one ‘visible’ claim we have to justify why a Racor is a Racor! When you walk in and you see all the equipment necessary for various testing to assess service intervals, longevity within engines, etc. you cannot help be impressed. “The difficulty with the service interval is it is dependent on the environment in which it is running - a Racor filter is designed to cover a broad a scope as possible. The truth is, if your filtration doesn’t perform and results in a breakdown, the costs could in fact consume the whole profitability of that truck for an entire year.”
(HPCR) injection systems where the clearances for fuel injection are reduced to microscale regions (5 microns) with operating pressures in excess of 2500 bars, fuel filtration systems needs to be highly efficient in removing sub 4 micron particles, too”. Parker is working very closely with the local research centres and universities to develop innovative media structures capable of dealing with these new challenges. The biggest challenge faced by today’s diesel fuel water separators is the fact that their ability to separate water from challenging fuels diminishes as they start clogging up with diesel contaminants and ashfaulten and that how his media research team has successfully developed the next generation of fuel filters - 3D Coalescers using engineered media solution capable of giving good end-of-life water separation efficiencies. The team shared with us the results of a recent study conducted by the media team which compared Parker’s current product with its competitors in back-to-back testing - see Figure 1, as well as the results from Parker’s next generation of fuel filters - 3D Coalescers - see Figure 2.

Products in the Market.
Why buy Racor?
During our tour of Racor’s factory, Adam Pearce, Racor Product Manager - Fuel explained: Our key customers specify Racor’s proven technology after years of testing and development as a first fit filtration product on their trucks, why would you select an inferior product as an aftermarket replacement part when you want to protect your investment and keep it on the road. It is what happens inside the filter that really counts, but as team told us, this is difficult to prove in the aftermarket. Customers in this sector have been known to choose them on how the filters appear on the outside and sometimes by the name they may believe is good enough. Dr. Farooq, Sr. Media Scientist at Racor Europe explained that tightening emission regulations and the strong drive towards greener technologies has resulted in changing the chemistry of diesel fuel blends over the last decade or so. He said: “Today’s diesel fuels are predominantly ULSD and have a number of additives with increasing percentage of bio-diesels. This change in chemistry of diesel fuels has an adverse effect on the performance of the traditional fuel filters - particularly on their ability to separate emulsified water; moreover, in today’s sophisticated high pressure common rail
Figure 2. Parker’s new 3D Coalescer fuel filter show excellent end-of-life water separation efficiency.
Aftermarket customers may be loyal to a particular brand but it may not necessarily be the best product for your application - a message that has been proven by a country mile during our visit to Parker Racor. The decision for your next filters should not be based on price, it should be based on the facts. www.parker.com/changingfiltration

FAG SmartSET
THE READY-TO-INSTALL WHEEL BEARING REPAIR SOLUTION FOR TRUCKS, BUSES AND TRAILERS FROM SCHAEFFLER IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET Last year Schaeffer launched the FAG SmartSET, the ready-to-install repair solution for wheel bearing replacement on trucks, buses, and trailers. It is prelubricated, and pre-assembled with pre-positioned tapered roller bearings, which means this new complete solution can make a vital contribution to reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). And not only that – fitting and mounting the wheel bearing unit is simpler and more reliable than ever before.
“With rising competition and price pressure, the total cost of ownership is increasingly a major focus of fleet operators and transport companies,” says Dr. Robert Felger, Senior Vice President Product and Marketing, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket. “When a repair is needed, it isn’t the cheapest spare part that is decisive in lowering operating costs, but the spare part that promises the longest reliability as seen over the life span of the truck. Whether it’s the FAG SmartSET or our patented FAG Repair Insert Unit (RIU), these kinds of holistic repair solutions – in the form of pre-assembled and high-quality wheel bearing units – are key factors in meeting the current needs of truck and trailer repair specialists.” The FAG SmartSET was developed especially for the independent Aftermarket and is ideal for all types of truck, bus and trailer axles that use standard tapered roller bearings. Core elements of the new repair solution are two pre-assembled wheel bearing units – each consisting of tapered roller bearings in an innovative cage design with retaining elements, and specially-coated inner and outer rings. This special coating significantly protects the bearings from corrosion, slip wear and crack formation. A support sleeve pre-positions the tapered roller bearings so that rotating the wheel to adjust the bearings is no longer necessary.

CONFIDENT ROOSTER BOOSTED BY THE BACKING OF G-TRUCK AND UAN TRUCK WIN TICKETS TO ‘CONVOY IN THE PARK’ AT DONINGTON IN JULY The 2017 British Truck Race Championship roars back to life at Brands Hatch on the weekend of 25/26 March, and the Rooster Truck Racing team, along with partners G-TRUCK and UAN TRUCK, can’t wait for the season to start.

drive it to get the most out of it, and it will also give me the chance to blow away a few cobwebs. It’s only four or five months but last season already seems quite a long time ago.” Despite last year’s less-than-ideal preparation, Brands Hatch proved a happy hunting ground for Rooster in the first meeting of 2016, with Luke registering an impressive 2nd place in one race and battling from 11th on the grid to a 6th place finish in another. “It’s a circuit I like and have had some success on in the past,” says Luke. “It’s quick too, with that thundering first straight followed by a tight turn and a fast run down the hill. We think the MAN should be quicker into corners than the last truck, so Brands Hatch might suit us.” G-TRUCK and UAN TRUCK, the commercial vehicle parts distribution arm of GROUPAUTO and UAN respectively, are proud to be partnering Luke and Rooster racing, and with the new truck race season just a few short weeks away David thinks that the support of such committed backers could make all the difference. “We’re delighted that G-TRUCK and UAN TRUCK are back on board for 2017,” he says. “Like Rooster, they’re friendly, forward thinking companies and together we make a great team. We know we couldn’t achieve anything without our partners and sponsors.”
Martin Sangster, CV Commercial Manager, for G-Truck, added: “Luke and the Rooster team are better prepared on the track, and off the track we’ve assembled a tremendous team of partners and sponsors that can really push Rooster forward this season, starting at Brands Hatch.” Rooster’s calm and measured preparation this time round stands in stark contrast to the situation last year, when Luke’s practice lap at Brands Hatch was the first time he’d driven the Renault on a racing circuit. Rooster was determined not to repeat that mistake in 2017 and booked a weekend at the Pembrey circuit in South Wales (Pembrey hosts the second race meet of the 2017 season) to put both the truck and Luke through their paces. Luke missed several races towards the end of last season with a broken wrist, and welcomes the chance to put in some serious laps before the start of the season. “Just having time in the truck before Brands Hatch will make a huge

NEW COMMERCIAL VEHICLE FRICTION - REDEFINING BRAKING TECHNOLOGY
After more than two years of development and field tests, a new friction brand is now available. SYNERGY Braking Technology. This new friction has been developed to optimise the synergistic relationship between friction components and a vehicle’s performance and service life. In the development of Synergy Braking we went back to basics and asked ourselves exactly what does the vehicle owner/operator want and then set about satisfying that need. Brake friction components are critical to safety. With heavy demands on performance, these components need to be robust and to work efficiently and effectively in all environments. Synergy braking features meshed back plates to provide enhanced material retention to the backing plate and has been proven on truck, trailer, bus and coach applications to provide premium braking performance and durability under all service operating conditions. With total operator costs of over £100K per vehicle minimising downtime In terms of performance, braking components (pad & disc) must satisfy

PRODUCT NEWS Don’t Forget The MANN-FILTER Urea Filter When Ordering AdBlue® Liquid
MANN-FILTER urea filter elements protect the sensitive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems of current trucks and buses against contaminants. It is critically important that precise quantities of contaminant free urea solution is injected to achieve an optimum reaction in the catalytic converter. All SCR systems currently available require filters to purify the urea-water solution. All MANN-FILTER urea filter elements are supplied as a kit including the necessary components to change the filter.
Easy to install push fit connectio n!
The MANN-FILTER range of OE specification urea filters offers high filtration efficiency, optimum system protection and SCR performance thus helping the vehicles adhere to the Euro 6 exhaust emissions standards.
Urea Service Tips •
•
•
Always change the urea filter according to the vehicle manufacturers recommendation, this is normally every 12 months. Top up the AdBlue® urea-water tank weekly. On average, for every 100 litres of fuel burned around 5 litres of AdBlue® is consumed. Check the system pipes for wear, tear and damage which could affect system performance.
AdBlue® Liquid Tips • • •
Be careful during cold periods as AdBlue® liquid freezes at -11˚C. AdBlue® is corrosive to aluminium and other materials. As defined in ISO22241-3 standards, AdBlue® has a shelf life of a minimum of 12 months, when stored at a constant temperature up to 30˚.
