MAN-UP!
Recent evidence has generated widespread UK Aftermarket awareness that some filter brands may not deliver the OE quality and performance promised. And, because the cost differential between premium and poor quality filtration can be just a few pence, many now agree that it is illogical to compromise business, reputation and customer retention, for the cost of a newspaper. When the carrot is ‘price’ alone, MAN-UP! Demand the optimum engine protection and peace of mind delivered with every MANN-FILTER.

From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. To drive or keep a vehicle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will continue to send you a renewal reminder when your vehicle tax is due to expire. You can apply online to tax your vehicle using the 16 digit reference number from your vehicle tax renewal reminder (V11) or 11 digit reference number from your log book (V5C). Renew online DVLA has been hard at work to make renewing your tax disc online a simpler, clearer and faster process. At the end of February, they launched a public beta version of the Renew a tax disc service. Now, beta has entered a new phase as DVLA prepares for it to become the main way to pay for Vehicle Excise Duty (the official name for the tax disc). They’ve already started to see an increase in users and will be monitoring how well the beta service performs. Use the beta service to renew your vehicle tax, and your experience will help DVLA to make this system simpler, clearer and faster to use.
RY NEWS Transport manager responsibilities Transport managers have a unique role. You work for an operator to ensure that its vehicles are roadworthy and drivers comply with traffic and drivers’ hours rules. At the same time you are also responsible to the wider public, through the traffic commissioner, for ensuring that your operator is compliant. That’s why traffic commissioners value the role so highly and always remind operators how important you are. The job can be demanding and looking after compliance standards for an operator’s fleet and their drivers is a challenge. So traffic commissioners know how hard transport managers are working when your operator gets a satisfactory visit from DVSA. For some operators though, things can go badly wrong. When it does, their transport manager will also usually be called before the traffic commissioner at the public inquiry. But Traffic Commissioner Nick Denton is finding that transport managers are sometimes failing to turn up to explain shortcomings, which almost inevitably makes things worse. Transport managers who haven’t turned up have given many excuses – including one who had ‘work commitments’, even though being at the public inquiry was vital to his duties as transport manager. Some don’t even give a reason. Traffic Commissioners are keen to promote the role and work of transport managers and tackle those who don’t meet the standards or who don’t spend the necessary time with their operators. Traffic Commissioners have used their powers to take away the professional competence and good repute of
transport managers who flout the rules and ignore their obligations, preventing them from working in the whole of the European Union. Bans can range from a few months to an indefinite period. Commissioners can also tell transport managers to take specific action before they can work again – such as re-sitting their transport manager CPC examination. To get an insight into the knowledge and responsibilities of the role, Mr Denton recently took the CPC exam and gained his standard international transport manager qualification.
Improve your compliance rating using your OCRS report
Mr Denton was impressed by the large body of knowledge which transport managers are expected to master and apply. In most cases, transport managers admit when things have gone wrong or tell the traffic commissioner about the problems they are having. This allows the traffic commissioners to work with the transport manager to help them to learn from their experience and identify a solution for the future.
With help from industry representatives, DVSA has developed an Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) report that helps operators to better understand their scores. The report is available in a number of different formats, alongside the existing Annual Test and Roadside Encounter reports. Once you have registered for our reports service, you will be able to see the scores for all of your licences and request a report for any one of them. Once requested, we would seek to email your bespoke report within 48 hours.

AT THE FOREFRONT WITH COMMERCIAL TURBOS Prompted by tougher Euro emissions legislation and the continual need to reduce operating costs, commercial vehicle turbochargers are evolving fast. Keeping right up to speed with them is the world’s largest independent turbo distributor BTN Turbo. Rapid supply “We started our business with commercial vehicle turbochargers, more than 40 years ago,” said BTN Turbo MD Mark Dickinson, “and commercials remain a key part of what we do.” Understanding the need for rapid supply to minimise operating downtime, BTN keeps over 18,000 turbos in stock for despatch to factors across the UK. They’re supplied with a free FitKit, including all the parts required to fit straight from the box, plus an oil filled pre-priming injector. Comprehensive support “We distribute turbos from all the major brands, including Holset and BorgWarner. But our service doesn’t stop at sending them out; we provide technical support and

advice, via our website at www.btnturbo.com and our helpline on 01895 466666.” Holset technology Such knowledge can be invaluable as turbos grow more complex. Holset has developed its HE200 series variable geometry turbos for greater durability in the arduous operating conditions encountered by small trucks and LCVs. Holset’s ‘sliding wall’ technology fixes the nozzle and vanes and instead moves the shroud surrounding them. This ensures exhaust gas pulses are absorbed by a robust turbocharger housing, rather than the nozzle and vanes. It reduces wear, uses fewer moving parts and increases service life. BorgWarner developments Meanwhile BorgWarner is supplying its new B-series turbos for Mercedes-Benz medium-duty commercial engines. The B-series incorporates advances such as titanium compressor wheels and electronic actuators for wastegate and turbine bypass control. It also
integrates much of the exhaust manifold into the turbine housing, for improved thermodynamics, compact packaging and simpler installation. Reassuring warranty With commercial vehicle turbos becoming increasingly sophisticated, fleet managers and owner operators will be reassured by BTN Turbo’s two year warranty on all turbos it supplies. This is enhanced by BTN’s famous No-Quibble warranty for diesel heavy commercials: if a unit supplied by BTN Turbo fails, for whatever reason, within one year of purchase, BTN will replace or repair it free: no fuss, no delay. However fast the turbocharger market moves, BTN Turbo will be at the forefront, servicing the needs and easing the load for commercial vehicle operators. You can find more information on the BTN Turbo website: www.btnturbo.com, and if you’d like to talk to an expert, call BTN Turbo on 01895 46666.

Waldron Commercials Ltd from Tredegar in Gwent has been a TOP TRUCK workshop since September 2011 and during the intervening three years the business has grown steadily, in no small part by strategically utilising the business support opportunities that the TOP TRUCK Programme provides to workshop businesses wishing to expand.
One of the core opportunities that Waldron Commercials introduced early on was to align itself with the group by adopting its corporate image and branding, which allowed the business to retain its complete operational independence, but benefit from being part of a major European network. Another practical benefit that the group provides to its workshops, and one which Waldron Commercials were quick to pick up on, is the business insurance package that the group has negotiated with Boswell Insurance. This agreement allows Top Truck workshops to purchase insurance cover at a far more competitive rate than they would 14

be able to as a stand alone business and that fact obviously helps the business with its overall market competitiveness. Ensuring that the technicians on the workshop floor are fully proficient with the latest vehicle technology is a vital ingredient of running a successful and well respected service and repair business, but access to the training required to attain and maintain these skills is sometimes not as easy to find as it should be. Through GROUPAUTO however, this stumbling block is also removed as it has developed a comprehensive training programme, which is delivered through highly respected
organisations and arranged on members’ behalf by their supplying G-Truck factor. This ensures that technicians have both the latest information and regular instruction, which is a major asset to the workshop and another benefit that Waldron Commercials has embraced whole-heartedly. With the support of its Top Truck membership, allied to the clear entrepreneurial spirit within the business, Waldron Commercials has been able to develop and grow its business and as a result has recently invested £150,000 to have a VOSA authorised testing facility installed to enable it to carry out MOT testing.
TOP TRUCK WORKSHOP FEATURE The investment is expected to deliver a 30% plus increase in business turnover because pre-installation, profitable MOT work had to be redirected to the closest MOT facility, which was some way off. However, with the opening of an onsite MOT testing operation it is not only Waldron Commercials who receive the benefits. Clearly it has now gained access to substantial revenue generating opportunities, but the fleet and owner operators in the local area have also benefitted, as they no longer have to waste unproductive time and incur the cost of the fuel to visit an MOT facility elsewhere for their MOT test requirements. Waldron Commercials has also invested in the IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) Workshop Accreditation scheme, which is another initiative that is supported by Top Truck. IRTE believes in promoting competence, best practice and safety in the workplace, as well as recognising and addressing the needs of those working in the transport industry. As a result of this, IRTE and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) are now working together to deliver IRTE Workshop Accreditation, an independent accreditation scheme designed to measure the procedures of independent workshops against those set by major industry stakeholders.
This scheme enables maintenance providers, such as Waldron Commercials, to demonstrate their competence and excellence whilst allowing operators and manufacturers to choose workshops that have been independently assessed to IRTE’s quality-assured standards. The scheme provides an independent benchmark and enables them to make easy and informed decisions, whilst also increasing the overall standard of vehicle repair. With the support of Top Truck, Waldron Commercials has been able to commit to the IRTE scheme and train its staff to go that extra mile and provide a level of customer service that has made a real difference to the business; its customers have witnessed the commitment to their needs the company is dedicated to deliver. Its proactive attitude to training and accreditation is also replicated in its apprenticeship programme, which is another opportunity that would be far more challenging without the support of the Top Truck programme. Top Truck has joined forces with Valeo, one of the group’s approved suppliers, to create a programme that really works for the Top Truck network.
apprenticeships, namely their cost, has been largely resolved, as it has underwritten much of the cost to the individual Top Truck outlet. The programme is run in conjunction with The Manchester College and at its conclusion, the apprentice will leave with an IMI level 3 qualification in HGV maintenance and repair. The course comprises a combination of on the job training, which takes place during a normal working week in the Top Truck workshop, in this case at Waldron Commercials and college-based study, which is undertaken at the college in a six-week block. The combination of block release study at the college, along with on-going assessment through site visits to observe the apprentice in the workplace with their employer, ensures that on qualifying, the apprentices are fully equipped and have the necessary skills to provide a valuable contribution to the supporting business. Top Truck, it does exactly what it says: help independent CV workshops like Waldron Commercials be the best in the business.
With Valeo’s involvement, one of the problems normally associated with

End of the road for hazardous particulate matter: new cabin filters for the independent aftermarket According to a warning issued by the European Environment Agency, “Particulate matter is the air pollutant that poses the greatest health risk to people in Europe. ”The latest findings by the German Federal Environmental Agency on particulate pollution in Germany and the associated hazards are also alarming. When it comes to road traffic, the priority is therefore to protect occupants of cars and commercial vehicles as well as bus passengers from polluted outside air. Filter manufacturer MANN+HUMMEL has consequently developed a new generation of cabin filters which ensures almost 100% removal of even the tiniest particles, which are particularly hazardous to health. The company also supplies modern particulate filters to the independent aftermarket under the MANN-FILTER brand name. The German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has calculated that, on average, some 47,000 people die prematurely in Germany every year as a result of particulate pollution. It warns that air pollution can result in acute respiratory disease, heart and lung disease or lung cancer. “The particulate limit value was only exceeded at around 3% of all measuring stations, This figure appears low, but it doesn’t reflect the actual hazard posed to human health by particulate matter, particularly if
16

we take into account the much more stringent recommendations issued by the World Health Organization (WHO),” says UBA Vice-President Thomas Holzmann. The WHO has recommended much lower particulate limit values than the EU for many years. According to the latest UBA findings, the WHO’s guideline value for particles smaller than 10 microns (PM10) was exceeded at almost 51% of all measuring stations in Germany in 2013. The smaller the particle, the greater the hazard to health Particulate matter (PM) is a term which refers to tiny particles in the air which do not immediately sink to the ground but remain suspended in the atmosphere for a period of time. These are produced, for example, through brake and tyre dust on roads, or from domestic heating systems. The smaller the particle, the greater the health hazard. “The problem is that small particles penetrate deeper into the airways than larger particles. This means that they reach areas where they cannot be breathed out again,” explains the UBA. Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) can thus penetrate deep into the lungs. Ultra-fine particles can even enter the bloodstream via the pulmonary alveoli. Vehicle occupants protected by particulate filters from MANN-FILTER The global market leader in filtration products, MANN+HUMMEL, is taking the latest findings about the health hazards of particulate matter very seriously. To protect vehicle occupants, the company has developed cabin filters equipped with the latest-generation, highly efficient filter media. The
numerous cabin filters which can be relied on to trap particulate matter include the “CUK 26 009” combined filter and the “CU 26 009” particle filter, which can be used as an alternative in certain vehicle models. MANN-FILTER supplies both particle and combined filters in original equipment quality to the independent aftermarket. A vehicle’s ventilation system acts like a vacuum cleaner, drawing in polluted outside air. Around 540,000 litres enter a car interior every hour. It is therefore essential to use a cabin filter to thoroughly purify this outside air in order to protect the health of vehicle occupants. This holds true particularly in the case of frequent car travellers, those who suffer from allergies and children. The latest-generation cabin filters from MANN-FILTER ensure that the incoming air is purified particularly thoroughly. The smallest particles with a diameter of 1.0 micron, which are particularly hazardous to health, are removed entirely by the “CU 26 009” particle filter for example, and removed with an effectiveness of 99% by the “CUK 26 009” combined filter. By way of comparison, these particles are up to 70 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. Particle filters trap solid particles such as particulate matter or pollen, whereas combined filters incorporate an activated carbon layer which means that they can also eliminate harmful gases such as ozone and benzene, as well as unpleasant odours. It is normally easy to upgrade to a combined filter. In the course of normal use, however, the filter medium gradually becomes clogged. To maintain proper air purification, the cabin filter should therefore be replaced once a year or every 15,000 kilometres at the latest.

Of the many benefits that members of the Top Truck independent garage network receive, few have been as popular as the Institute of Road Transport Engineers’ (IRTE) irtec Licensing Scheme, as the 75 Top Truck technicians now accredited to the scheme testifies.
Launched because it recognised the need for those working in the industry to prove their competence, the IRTE pioneered the irtec Licensing Scheme for technicians and mechanics. An irtec licence certifies the skills and safety of these technicians and has been widely embraced by members as it provides an excellent method of ensuring the consistent standard of their staff and assists with their individual professional development.

bonding tape then creates a permanent ‘weld’ between the lamp and the vehicle body, which is fully resistant to water and will remain strong for the life of the vehicle. The ‘Push & Stick’ system is currently available on three of LEDs latest lamp ranges, the EU140 ‘Hamburger’ rear combination lamp range, and the EU38 and 37 series marker lamps – which all come with a standard five year warranty, and are fully ECE and EMC approved. The Benefits of LED Vehicle Lighting: Low power consumption: Up to 90% less than traditional bulb lighting. Longevity: service life exceeding 50,000 hours, compared to 500 hours for a typical bulb. Durability: LEDs are a solid state lighting technology and contain no loose or moving parts, making them highly resistant to shock and vibration. Highly efficient: over 90% of energy emitted is usable light, with almost no heat loss at all. Environment: clean to produce and around 90% recyclable material used. Whole life costs reduced: maintenance and servicing costs are minimalised as no bulb changes are required – completely service free. Safety: risk of blown bulbs is eliminated, reducing police/VOSA interest, and improving the safety of your vehicle. Performance: LEDs offer a faster rise to full light intensity, compared to traditional bulb lighting, which gives increased safety benefits with regards to a faster stop light function.

Baldwin Fuel Filters Compatible with Certified Bio-Diesel Blends Baldwin fuel filters currently in use in petroleum-based diesel applications are compatible with certified biodiesel blends up to and including B20. Our laboratory has conducted extensive soak testing with various blends of biodiesel. Through this testing, we have verified that the materials used in our current fuel filters are compatible with certified biodiesel blends up to and including B20. Biodiesel, n. – a fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the requirements of ASTM D 6751. Biodiesel blend, n. – a blend of biodiesel meeting ASTM D 6751 with petroleum-based diesel fuel designated BXX, where XX is the volume percent of biodiesel. Overview Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that is rapidly growing in use. However, biodiesel received a bad reputation
after the problems that occurred in Minnesota in 2005 when some states mandated the use of B2 biodiesel blend statewide. One of the problems was very short fuel filter life. Further research revealed that the problems encountered were not due to the use of the biodiesel blend, but rather the use of biodiesel that did not meet the ASTM D 6751 specifications. The use of biodiesel that does not meet specifications may cause problems within the fuel system. One false perception of biodiesel is that it can be made by simply mixing raw vegetable oil, waste vegetable oil or animal fats with diesel fuel. Due to their high glycerin content, these feed stocks must be refined and catalyzed to make biodiesel that meets the ASTM D 6751 specification. Filter Plugging Biodiesel has some solvent properties and will act as a solvent in the fuel. Blends greater than B20 may have enough of a solvent effect to break down the varnish deposits
on the walls of the existing fuel storage tanks or fuel systems. The break-down of these varnish deposits will contaminate the fuel with particulate, which can cause fuel filters to plug rapidly. Once the contaminant is removed from the fuel, the fuel filter life should return to normal. Biodiesel blends up to B20 should have minimal solvent effects on existing fuel systems and blends below B5 should have no solvent effect above that of regular diesel fuel meeting ASTM D 975 specification. Blends of B5 and below should also meet the ASTM D 975 specifications for diesel fuel. Filter plugging problems can be prevented by effectively cleaning storage tanks before introducing biodiesel. Filter plugging can also be minimized by using low blends of biodiesel and/or ensuring the biodiesel that you are using is from a quality source meeting the ASTM D 6751 specifications. BQ9000 is a quality certification that certifies biodiesel suppliers that provide quality biodiesel meeting the ASTM D 6751 specification. Using High Blends of Biodiesel Filters that are used in special applications using high blends of biodiesel, those near B100 or unblended B100, should use solvent resistant materials. Continued use of standard rubber materials commonly found on most popular fuel filters may result in deterioration or swelling of the material, which may result in leaks.
