Entrepreneurship and being an Entrepreneur
Considerando que se está na primeira edição da revista On Startups Magazine, em que tive a honra de ser convidado a escrever um artigo de opinião para esta primeira edição da revista, pareceu-me fazer todo o sentido em começar por escrever um artigo sobre o significado de Empreendedorismo e o que é ser Empreendedor. O conceito de “empreendedorismo” não é um conceito recente, antes pelo contrário. Empreendedor tem a sua origem no inglês entrepreneur, que, por sua vez, advém da expressão francesa entreprendre, que significa ser intermediário. Recuando ao século XIII, pode-se referenciar Marco Pólo - um dos primeiros europeus a percorrer “o caminho da seda” para a China, para fins comerciais - como um bom exemplo de empreendedor no sentido lato de intermediário.
Considering that this is the first edition of the On Start-ups Magazine, in which I had the honor of being invited to write an opinion article, it seemed to make perfect sense to start by writing an article about the meaning of Entrepreneurship and what means to be an Entrepreneur. The concept of Entrepreneurship is not recent, quite the contrary. Entrepreneur has its origin in the English entrepreneur, which in turn, comes from the French expression entreprendre, that means to be an intermediary. Going back to the 13th century, we can refer to Marco Polo - one of the first Europeans to travel “the silk road” to China, for commercial purposes - as a good example of an entrepreneur in the broad sense of an intermediary.
Empreendedorismo, é na atualidade um vocábulo obrigatório do nosso quotidiano, sendo “o espírito empreendedor“uma atitude mental e comportamental para o processo de criação e desenvolvimento de atividade económicas, combinando o risco e a criatividade e/ou a inovação com a gestão rigorosa, no âmbito de um organismo novo ou já existente” (Comissão Europeia, 2003). Por sua vez, o empreendedor é aquele que assume riscos, na medida em que, enfrenta os contextos de incerteza, com uma atitude positiva e, percebendo-a como oportunidade de negócio. Quando um empreendedor cria uma empresa ou aposta na inovação, tem sempre presente a identificação de uma oportunidade e a motivação de “construir” algo diferente e assim, estabelecer uma vantagem competitiva com os recursos colocados à sua disposição. O conceito de empreendedorismo está associado a novas combinações de natureza empresarial e aos indivíduos que pretendem concretizá-las, são os empreendedores. Em meados do século passado, as grandes empresas eram dominantes quer na geração de riqueza quer na empregabilidade. Nos dias de hoje e a nível mundial, as PME apresentam um papel fundamental no crescimento e desenvolvimento económico, fruto do empreendedorismo. Considerando o atual ambiente Pandémico e a tão desejada retoma económica para Portugal, é imprescindível continuar a apostar-se nas Políticas que promovam o empreendedorismo como aposta no combate ao desemprego e promover o crescimento económico. Entrepreneurship is currently a mandatory word in our daily lives, with “the entrepreneurial spirit” being a mental and behavioral attitude associated with the process of creating and developing economic activities, combining risk and creativity and/ or innovation with strict management, within the framework of a new or existing body” (European Commission, 2003). In turn, the entrepreneur is the one who takes risks, insofar as he faces the contexts of uncertainty, with a positive attitude and perceiving it as a business opportunity. When an entrepreneur creates a company or invests in innovation, he is always aware of the identification of an opportunity and the motivation to “build” something different and thus, establish a competitive advantage with the resources placed at his disposal. The concept of entrepreneurship is associated with new combinations of a business and entrepreneurs are those who intend to implement. In the middle of the last century, large companies were dominant in both wealth generation and employability. Today and worldwide, SMEs play a key role in economic growth and development as the result of entrepreneurship. Considering the current Pandemic environment and the much-desired economic recovery for Portugal, it is essential to continue investing in Policies that promote entrepreneurship as a bet on combating unemployment and promoting economic growth. It belongs to the Pluris Investments group, which is part of the cruise company Douro Azul. The hotel has 119 rooms, 112 of which are superior, deluxe, terrace deluxe, and 7 suites, junior suite, suite and signature suite categories.
