O que é a IHCare?

IHCare - Innovation Hospital Care é uma startup, de base tecnológica, que tem como foco três princípios principais: Investigação, Desenvolvimento e Implementação de soluções tecnológicas inovadoras na área da saúde, com ênfase na economia de recursos para maximizar o tempo e o dinheiro das unidades de saúde. Está empenhada em dar uma resposta eficaz a todos os seus stakeholders - pacientes, prestadores de cuidados de saúde e administrações hospitalares. A missão da IHCare é humanizar os cuidados de saúde, melhorar a sua qualidade e reduzir o custo para a sociedade sem pôr em causa os resultados.

Como e Quando surgiu?

Diana Pires, fundadora e CEO da IHCare, no decorrer da sua formação superior em Enfermagem, vivenciou a prática clínica em contexto real que revelou uma fragilidade aparente com a higienização dos pacientes acamados. Em pleno século XXI, estes cuidados ainda eram (e são) efetuados com recurso a uma esponja e uma bacia com água, pondo em causa o conforto e bem-estar dos pacientes, assim como, demonstrava uma débil higienização por via deste procedimento. Fruto do seu espírito crítico, criativo e empreendedor, colocou a questão que ainda hoje serve de mote para apresentar a paixão que sente pelo sonho que desenvolveu ao longo destes anos - “Será que consegues imaginar passar 3 dias sem tomar um banho, sem sentir água corrente no corpo?”. Assim nasceu a ideia, o projeto, a solução disruptiva e inovadora, nasceu a empresa que se prepara para mudar o paradigma nos cuidados de saúde.

A IHCare - Innovation Hospital Care foi fundada em novembro de 2013. A sua sede localiza-se em Penela, distrito de Coimbra, na incubadora de empresas HIESE Smart Rural, pertencente ao Instituto Pedro Nunes. Após vários anos de investigação e desenvolvimento está prestes a fazer a aproximação ao mercado nacional e internacional através da implementação da solução inovadora all-in-one para higienização de pacientes dependentes – o Showercare®.

O Showercare® é uma solução inovadora e disruptiva que permite que pessoas acamadas, ou com alto grau de dependência, tenham acesso a um banho de água quente e corrente, sem precisar de sair da cama ou recorrer a técnicas triviais como o uso de bacias e esponjas, aumentando assim o seu conforto e preservando a sua dignidade. Esta solução tem ainda um impacto muito relevante no controlo e prevenção de infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde (contaminação cruzada) e contribui para a redução do risco de acidentes de trabalho dos cuidadores. Ela permite ainda a higienização diretamente na cama sem mover o doente, o que permite: a redução da exposição do paciente ao ambiente hospitalar fora da enfermaria, já que nos casos em que se desse um duche convencional iria implicar o transporte do paciente; redução do contacto por manipulação e tempo de exposição do paciente e profissional de saúde no ato de higiene; e a redução da doença oportunista por redução da infeção cruzada no corpo do paciente e melhor higienização global (o que tem impacto também na prevenção de outras doenças associadas a uma higienização inadequada).

É de salientar que atualmente, em plena pandemia, os utentes em isolamento com este grau de dependência são somente refrescados através de manápulas com pequenas quantidades de água o que não confere grau de higienização da pele do paciente e que por si só é uma prática não viável da secreção corpórea de cada paciente, incitando à contaminação cruzada. Adicionalmente, por se tratar de uma solução autónoma e extremamente eficiente, resulta uma redução considerável do tempo necessário para o ato de higienização, melhora o conforto quer do doente quer do profissional de saúde e reduz o consumo de água e a necessidade de infraestrutura de apoio, como casa-de-banho equipadas para banhos, com consequente redução de custos associados.

Em que patamar se encontra?

A solução encontra-se pronta para a realização de um piloto experimental e respetivos ensaios clínicos para a determinação exata da sua eficácia na prevenção de contágio e redução de custos, tendo já capturado a atenção de diversas unidades hospitalares e de apoio a doentes acamados ou com limitações de mobilidade. Esta solução, enquanto projeto, foi já agraciada com diversos prémios e apoios como reconhecimento do seu carácter inovador, como o Poliempreende, Arrisca C, IAPMEI passaporte para o Empreendedorismo, finalista do EIT Health Innostars, finalista e acelerada pelo programa BGI e,ainda no decorrer do ano de 2020, o apoio do PT2020 através de um apoio IDT. Também o capital privado já reconheceu o potencial da nossa solução, com a entrada no capital da nossa empresa, um Business Angel, que hoje faz parte da nossa equipa, e mais recentemente a Portugal Ventures, o que resultou num investimento cumulativo de mais de 700 mil euros.

Perspetivas de futuro?

Atualmente, estamos no início da fase de testes-piloto em contexto real, em Portugal e na Alemanha. Em parceria com a UBIMEDICAL e C2ICB, apenas aguardamos a aprovação definitiva por parte da Comissão de Ética do Hospital da Cova da Beira para estes mesmos testes iniciarem, assim como do governo regional do Estado Alemão de Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. É primordial, a procura ativa de uma nova ronda de investimento para a fase de pré-industrialização e, posteriormente, concretizar a entrada no mercado nacional e internacional. O foco atual é o mercado Europeu, e em paralelo, o mercado dos Estados Unidos e o do Brasil.

It is committed to providing an effective response to all its stakeholders - patients, healthcare providers, and hospital administrations. IHCare’s mission is to humanize healthcare, improve its quality and reduce the cost to society without compromising results.

How and When did it come about?

Diana Pires, founder and CEO of IHCare, during her higher education in Nursing, experienced clinical practice in a real context that revealed an apparent weakness with the hygiene of bedridden patients. In the 21st century, this care was (and still is) performed using a sponge and a basin with water, compromising the comfort and well-being of patients, as well as demonstrating poor hygiene through this procedure. As a result of his critical, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit, he posed the question that still serves as a motto to present the passion he feels for the dream he has developed over the years - “Can you imagine going three days without taking a bath, without feeling running water in your body? This is how the idea, the project, the disruptive and innovative solution, and the company that is preparing to change the paradigm in health care were born.

IHCare - Innovation Hospital Care was founded in November 2013. Its headquarters is located in Penela, district of Coimbra, in the business incubator HIESE Smart Rural, belonging to the Pedro Nunes Institute. After several years of research and development, it is about to approach the national and international market through the implementation of the innovative all-in-one solution for the hygiene of dependent patients - the Showercare®.

Showercare® is an innovative and disruptive solution that allows bedridden people, or people with a high degree of dependence, to have access to a bath with hot running water, without having to get out of bed or resort to trivial techniques such as the use of basins and sponges, thus increasing their comfort and preserving their dignity. This solution also has a very relevant impact on the control and prevention of healthcare-associated infections (cross-contamination) and contributes to reducing the risk of occupational accidents for caregivers. It also allows hygiene directly on the bed without moving the patient, which allows: the reduction of patient exposure to the hospital environment outside the ward, since in cases where a conventional shower would be given it would imply transporting the patient; reduction of contact by manipulation and exposure time of the patient and health professional in the hygiene act; and the reduction of opportunistic disease by reducing cross infection on the patient’s body and better overall hygiene (which also has an impact on the prevention of other diseases associated with inadequate hygiene).

It is noteworthy that currently, in the middle of the pandemic, isolation patients with this degree of dependence are only refreshed through the use of paddles with small amounts of water, which does not provide a degree of sanitization of the patient’s skin and is in itself a non-viable practice of the body secretion of each patient, inciting cross-contamination. Additionally, because it is an autonomous and extremely efficient solution, it results in a considerable reduction in the time required for the hygienic act, improves the comfort of both the patient and the healthcare professional, and reduces water consumption and the need for support infrastructure, such as bathrooms equipped for bathing, with a consequent reduction in associated costs.

What stage is it at?

The solution is ready for an experimental pilot and related clinical trials to determine exactly how effective it is in preventing contagion and reducing costs, having already captured the attention of several hospitals and support units for bedridden or mobility-impaired patients. This solution, as a project, has already received several awards and support in recognition of its innovative character, such as Poliempreende, Arrisca C, IAPMEI Entrepreneurship Passport, EIT Health Innostars finalist, finalist and accelerated by the BGI program and, still in 2020, the support of PT2020 through an IDT support. Private capital has also recognized the potential of our solution, with the entrance in our company’s capital, a Business Angel, who is now part of our team, and more recently Portugal Ventures, which resulted in a cumulative investment of more than 700 thousand euros.

Prospects?

Currently, we are at the beginning of the pilot testing phase in a real context, in Portugal and Germany. In partnership with UBIMEDICAL and C2ICB, we are just waiting for the final approval from the Ethics Committee of the Cova da Beira Hospital for these tests to start, as well as from the regional government of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is paramount, the active search for a new round of investment for the pre-industrialization phase and, subsequently, to materialize the entry into the national and international market. The current focus is on the European market, and in parallel, the market in the United States and Brazil.
