Together, operating on clefts... because dignity begins with a smile

We established the ‘Smile Ambassador’ training programme for our growing base of community volunteers. There are many passionate advocates of Operation Smile and this programme has been designed to provide them with the support, tools and training to raise awareness of Operation Smile in communities all over the country. Our team of Smile Ambassadors are working to make Operation Smile a household name in Ireland, one community at a time. *100% of your €2 donation will go to Operation Smile Ireland. This July we will welcome 650 students to the University of Limerick for Operation Smile’s 24th International Student Leadership Conference. This will be the second time this highly regarded leadership conference comes to Limerick and we will be delighted to give a big Irish welcome to our student supporters from all over the world! And as we will continue to expand our awareness and fundraising initiatives here in Ireland, to ensure that all those who wish to support our work will have an opportunity to do so, please join us for a glass of mulled wine and some festive carols at our 2nd Annual Carols by Candlelight service at Monkstown Parish Church on Thursday, December 12th. Let’s celebrate the close of a wonderful year together!

Our Irish volunteers have been as active as ever, joining Operation Smile medical mission teams to provide free surgeries for children born with clefts all over the developing world. We continue to align with Operation Smile Ethiopia, where we are implementing surgical training rotations in Jimma to create a sustainable model of teaching that will enable Ethiopian plastic surgeons to take care of their own children born with clefts.

We launched our Miles for Smiles fundraising initiative to encourage our supporters to get active and raise funds for Operation Smile by changing their miles to smiles, and we were delighted to have marathon runners out pounding the pavements on our behalf all over Ireland.

It’s hard to believe that another year is coming to a close - and what a great and busy one it’s been for us. This year marked 10 years of Operation Smile Ireland and we were honoured to celebrate with our Co-Founders Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee, Joe Costello T.D., Minister of State for Trade and Development, and with 300 of our volunteers and supporters at The Change Forever Ball.

What the parents have to say: Operation Smile Student Programmes introduced my daughter to the concept of caring for someone who will never know who you are but will never forget your generosity of spirit. It taught her to speak in public without fear or anxiety; nurtured organisational and fundraising qualities in my daughter; provided her with the opportunity to connect and make friends with other students from all over the world; and was simply the most wonderful experience for my daughter during her teenage years. It provided her with the skills to choose a career in event management. Finola Earley, Glenageary, Co. Dublin

Operation Smile Student Programmes has made me more aware of the world around me! - Jack Jeffries:

Operation Smile student programmes have made me see that students can have an impact on people’s lives and that with hard work and effort anything can be done. I am more involved in my community as a result. Ellen Kelly On our mission we were lucky enough to see the impact of Operation Smile first hand. Our main role was to play and teach. What could be better than spending the day playing with the most inspirational kids ever?! Many families we met had traveled for three days just to have the chance for their child to receive surgery. We shadowed doctors, helped nurses in the ward and learnt to work with translators to reassure families whose babies were having surgery. Most

Student programmes have helped my confidence, and now I love meeting new people. The main thing is that I’m more open to new things which have lead to new experiences and opportunities! - Mika Egan importantly we taught the families and patients on our medical mission about oral hygiene, nutrition, preparing clean water and more. It was amazing to see a child with a cleft lip go into surgery and 45 minutes later to see them come out with a brand new smile and their lives changed forever. It definitely changed our lives forever! Thank you Operation Smile!

ngan’S STORY

Her parents say they were very thankful for how Operation Smile has not only given their daughter a dream, but a real future, too. She will be able to continue in school, and someday, get married and have her own family.

Her family lives off of the equivalent of less than E400 per year and would never be able to afford the surgery that would change Ngan’s life and give her a future. But when Ngan’s parents heard that Operation Smile was holding a medical mission in Danang, Vietnam, Ngan and her family travelled for miles for the chance to heal Ngan’s smile. last day Though they arrived late on the and off paid rts effo r thei g, of screenin ery. surg for d epte acc was n Nga lthy, Today, Ngan is the happy, hea She be. to nt mea was vibrant girl she and ge villa her in ds frien y man has school studies with them.
