Roberto Kriete President Fundación Gloria de Kriete Our society would be really different, if our youth were properly educated; meaning that our children should receive pre-school education, in order to adequately develop their abilities in math, literature, computers, English, science and history. But more importantly, children should have access to an education that strengthens their hearts, engendering in them young, well-rounded men and women with strong, positive core values, ensuring a different, improved generation. We should raise better individuals for our society; citizens filled with gratitude and commitment, who believe in their country and have the capacity to transform and pay forward what they have received.

This is the belief that our family and Foundation embrace. This is the life philosophy that we have instilled in each of our initiatives and programs over the last 10 years. The passionate and committed labor of love that has been done these past 10 years, by our foundation’s team, led by Celina, has been simply amazing. We have developed the capacity to link NGOs through our “Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan” (Helping Those Who Help) award, and we have contributed to their strengthening and growth. We have also contributed to these organizations by providing exposure of their amazing – often silent – work, enabling their work and impact on Salvadoran lives to be magnified.

We have broken paradigms, giving credibility to the work of so many volunteers who have harnessed their hope and committed to changing the lives of the less fortunate. How many times have we said – ’if there were more NGO’s working, we would have resolved the most pressing issues in El Salvador.’ When we started the Foundation 10 years ago, we had no idea how far we could go. We believe that it’s not just about providing financial support, but about building something, regardless of beliefs or religion. We believe in working together for our small, great country.

We support programs that guarantee sustainability: Oportunidades, Salud Rural Integral, Ludoteca Hospitalaria Gloria de Kriete, Cambiando Vidas, Municipios Emprendedores and ONUVA Foundation. We are grateful to all of the organizations that have allowed us to collaborate with them.

Together, we are building El Salvador!

OPORTUNIDADES PROGRAM 1,350 Beneficiaries

in 10 years

EVELYN RODAS Graduate from Oportunidades The Oportunidades program changed my life because it enabled me to see things differently. I graduated in 2010, from the second class of the program. After graduating from high school, I enrolled in Monica Herrera University, one of the most prestigious schools for Marketing and Communications. I graduated with a certificate degree in advertising, and by end of this year I will be completing my Bachelor ’s Degree in Integrated Communications. I owe all my present and future to God, and the Foundation Gloria de Kriete for the doors it opened for me.

Oportunidades was created in 2007, with the goal of increasing the opportunities and success in students from underpriviledged backgrounds from around the country through encouraging social inclusion. The program participants were chosen based on academic excellence and a desire to excel. The program provides academic support to high school and vocational students, and assists with job placement.

Oportunidades’s vision is to become the leading academic enrichment program in the nation, providing comprehensive training to transform underprivileged Salvadoran students into agents of change capable of creating a lasting impact in their communities and their country. Over the past 8 years, Oportunidades has seen a great deal of success thanks to the constant innovation and continued dedication of the 65 teachers who have supplimented the high school education and personal growth of each participant.

10

The first phase of Oportunidades takes place throughout the academic year, and offers two tracks: The “full-time” track and the “Saturday” track. The “full-time” track takes place every day from Monday to Friday. The “Saturday” track only offers the program to participants every Saturday.

Oportunidades has five locations nationwide: San Salvador, Santa Ana, San Miguel, Chalatenango, and Ahuachapán, with funding from Foundation JJ Borja. These locations provide programming to 65 municipalities in 10 departments across El Salvador. The curriculum of Oportunidades has been developed by highly skilled education professionals to reinforce the high school curriculum in the following subjects: English, computer science, humanities, linguistic, science, math, and career development.

This year, in phase, Oportunidades began its academic year with 835 participants nationwide. In the second phase, Oportunidades will assist students in finishing their high school education and in selecting their university or vocational degree, whether in El Salvador or abroad. The program assistance is provided via workshops, academic guidance, and counseling. Since the launch of the program, a total of 485 young Salvadorans have received scholarships to universities. 2015 demonstrates the largest number of university and vocational scholarships, with 211 young participants now studying in 20 national universities and two foreign institutions. The final and third phase of Oportunidades is to provide a liaison between program’s university graduates and corporations in order for participants

to seen as the ideal candidates for businesses seeking to hire highly qualified, trustworthy, talented professionals.

So far in 2015, the results have been as follows: • 45 vocational graduates • 25 university graduates • 15 students placed in internships • 50 young adults placed in full-time positions for corporations, such as: Citibank, Promerica, Scotiabank, Avianca, Aeroman, Deloitte, Comercial Advertising Agency, PIMI, Ideaworks, Qumbo, among others. Key partnerships have been formed to strengthen employability skills as well as access to the labor market. Among these partners are: Chamber of Commerce, Entrepreneur Organization (EO) Creative, PIMI, Fruit of The Loom, Premper, Vital Voices, CESAL, World Vision, UNITAR / UN, and many more.

SALUD RURAL INTEGRAL PROGRAM 184,000 Beneficiaries

in 10 years

YESENIA DÍAZ, Beneficiary La Ceiba, San Francisco Menéndez, Ahuachapán. I have always sought the medical attention given by AGAPE health clinics and Fundación Kriete, especially during pregnancy, because I trust the prenatal care provided by the health promoter and the doctor. It ’s a pleasure to receive medical attention because of the high quality of service provided. The staff is very friendly and they carefully explain how each patient should take their medicine. Also they carefully explain the symptoms and proper treatment for the illness the patient is suffering from. They care about the patient.

13

Since 2002 , the Program Salud Rural Integral - Prosarin has provided basic healthcare to more than 6,000 rural families in the departments of AhuachapĂĄn, Sonsonate, and La Union (ser ving a total of 2 3, 7 16 people.)

The beneficiaries are aware of the importance of early childhood development in children under 5, and to this date these children receive regular medical checkups and remain heatlhy. A total of 14,838 children under the age of 5 have received medical care.

With the help of Prosarin’s staff of 6 doctors, 16 health promoters, and 12 educators, we provide primary healthcare, homecare, vaccinations and child nutrition control, prenatal care for pregnant mothers, as well as healthcare services for children, teens, and adults.

All pregnant women receive timely prenatal care, preventing infants born with low birth weight. A t ot al of 5, 37 2 pregnant women have received medical care.

The program has provided more than 25,990 medications to patients and provided more than 22,213 individual health services.

14

Health Educaction has improved the quality of life of the populations and has enabled disease prevention over treatment. For instance, diseases caused by lack of immunization such as diarrhea, respiratory diseases, anemia, and pneumonia have shown a significant decrease. Maternal and infant mortality rates have also decreased.

In 2014, more than 1,808 adolescents and 4,099 seniors received medical care. People with disabilities, either physical, sensorial, or mental, received healthcare and, if necesarry, were referred to specialized treatment. The achievements within the community-based rehabilitation strategy are as follows 357 people with disabilities received healthcare, 385 training sessions were held to educate people on disease prevention and the rights of individuals with disabilities, 13 support committees for the handicapped were been formed. 16 promoters and 6 doctors were trained to detect and treat diabetes by educating people on disease prevention and recommendations geared towards reducing com pl i cati on s . This year, 1, 913 diabetics received medical care.

As a complement to this program, Aprendemos Juntos - Learning Together- was created. This program provides early education opportunities for 642 children under the age of 6 in rural communities in both Sonsonate and Ahuachapán. This type of learning is implemented through home-based early childhood education programs in community space. Workshops take place 3 times a week with children between the ages of 3 and 6. In 2014, the results were as follows: • 1,476 early education sessions were provided to children. • 657 recreational therapy sessions were delivered. • 334 workshops for mothers focused on early childhood stimulation and education were held. • 9,975 children received home visits by our team of therapists trained for the program.

LUDOTECA HOSPITALARIA “GLORIA DE KRIETE” 60,000 Beneficiaries

in 10 years

DANIEL MELARA

father of Moisés Melara of 8 years old / beneficiary. In Novemeber 2014, Moses underwent plastic surgery as a result of third degree burns affecting most of his body. He was a dancer and a cheerful child, however after his accident he suffered depression. Nevertheless, when he plays with his therapist, he’s happy again. He enjoys electronic games and likes to draw. On a regualar basis, he doesn’t communicate much, but when the play therapist comes to visit him, he will open up to us about his experience. As parents, we are very grateful for the support and confident that if we cannot be beside him, a play therapist will be at his side.

1717

In 2005, the Ludoteca NAVES Hospitalaria Gloria de Kriete was founded at the Hospital Nacional de Niùos Benjamin Bloom, and introduced play therapy in two hospital divisions: orthopedics and oncology, with the objective of transforming the reality of pain to moments of joy, facilitating the expression of feeling, and encouraging compliance treatments. Over the past 10 years, play therapy provided by Ludoteca NAVES Hospitaliara ha s b een im pl e me n t e d in 11 hospital divisions.

18

An understanding based on the needs, ages, and charateristics of the patient is needed to identify the appropiate play therapies, such as: music therapy, balloon art, art therapy, storytelling, therapy through laughter, among others. These therapies are delivered by a team of 11 professionals, including psychologists, physical therapists, and teachers. From 2005 to 2014, there have been over 42,535 beneficiaries.

The program has the support of six universities nationwide who engage their student volunteers completing their social service practicum. In 2014 over 320 students, national, and international volunteers received training in personalized attention for in-patient therapy and play therapy. In 2014 we were able to implement music therapy through a closed music circuit in the divisions of: oncology, ICU, and the intermediate care unit. This methodology was chosen to reduce the emotional burden of patients and parents.

Thanks to the excellent work of our therapists, our team of doctors and nurses now recognize that play therapy is an integral part of treating patients. Nurses are fully commited to the concept of play therapy with their patients, resulting in greater empathy and better communication. Play therapy has gained trust and credibility within the medical community encouraging chief physicians to request this form of therapy for their patients, as well as to implement this approach in their hospital entertainment activities.

DOÑA MARÍA JOSEFINA Mrs. María Josefina / beneficiary. I am grateful to the Fundacion Gloria Kriete and FUDEM because they have helped a great deal with my baby ’s treatment, and have always cared for my family with open arms.

21

FUDEM is a private nonprofit foundation dedicated to the prevention, education, and attention to visual health, so that it can be accessible to all Salvadorans, especially those demonstrating economic hardship. The Gloria Kriete Foundation has always focused their efforts on chlidren. In 2005, both the construction and equipping of the pediatric surgery unit began in FUDEM and the program Cambiando Vidas was founded.

22

The program aims to improve visual health for children living in poverty who suffer from strabismus, or need corrective eye surgery. In our country, this condition affects approximately 4% of children under the age of 6. Through Cambiando Vidas , more than 1,500 children have benefited from surgeries. Thanks to the continued support of the Gloria Kriete Foundation, we were able to perform an additional 306 surgeries in 2014.

We also provided eye surgery to adults who had quit their jobs due to visual health problems. Twenty percent of all children examined have some sort of visual impairment. These children tend to suffer from: low self-esteem, frustration, short attention spans, and show a lack of interest in school. These challenges highlight the importance of this program.

FUDEM and the Gloria Kriete Foundation aim to create a healthy life for Salvadoran children so that they can succesfully lead our country in the future. We are trying to reduce school desertion rates and give back the light to children in need. In 2013, we inaugurated the pediatric and strabismus unit “Gloria de Kriete offering children a designated area for medical treatment.

DON FLORENTINO Local Promotor. I am from Istagapán, Guaymango. I have allowed a field school to be constructed on my property, which has brought us many benefits. I’ve done it with love so that there is an organized group working and so that the needs of Istagapan are met and Guaymango can become a ¨Municipio Emprendedor.

In rural areas of El Salvador, 1 out of 4 children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Malnutrition in children is a serious problem that prevents the proper development of children, families, communities, and the country. In 2004 the program “Libras de Amor” was founded with the goal to overcome poverty through the reduction of infant malnutrition in El Salvador. The intervention model of “Libras de Amor” is comprised of two key components: early childhood education, and food security and income generation; and a transverse axis of social sustainability.

26

The Municipios Emprendedores program is the strategic component behind the food security and income generation focus. The Fundacion Gloria Kriete has supported the FUSAL program Municipio Emprendedor for 8 years. During this period, we have implemented 4,900 projects focused on self-sustainability and income generation in 21 municipalities, focused on skills development and capacity building in production and marketing.

The primary results are as follows: • 14,622 families visualize positive opportunities in their future. • 96 agricultural promoters have been trained in handling creole farms. • 1, 4 05 native far ms est a b lished b y f a m il ies.

h av e

be e n

• Families have improved their practices and ha b its. 95% of children under 6 months are being breastfed. • Chronic malnutrition has significantly declined in: Apaneca, Ataco, San Julian, and Guaymango.

In 2014 we implemented a pilot of the Field School program. Field schools are spaces within communities designed to teach new skills in agricultural initiatives, such as handling poultry and harvesting. Families participate and learn: to build chicken coops, to vaccinate chickens, to build a larval, plant vegetable gardens in small spaces, and other skills that will help further agricultural development. Community volunteers that hold an agriculatural certification train the families in the field schools (ECAS) and are accompanied by the technical team of Libras de Amor.

• Families who participate have improved their per capita income.

Forja Program:

“Talita Kumi Program:

The FoundaciĂłn Forja has provided character building workshops for first, second, third, and fourth graders. There are currently 160 children participating in these workshops.

In this program, young students participate for a period of three years in extracurricular classes, including: English, computer science, math, and personal values. The program began in 2012 with 18 student participants, incorporating a new group every other year. In total, there have been 72 high school students beneficiaries.

Workshops for teachers, parents, and educators have also been provided at the child welfare center. These workshops help participants grow so that they are capable of making educated decisions. Additionally, related workshops have been offered to educate students on the dangers of addiction and misguided affection. All these initiatives benefit more than 500 people in the educational community.

Facing the challenges of an increasingly complex world, specifically in the work and social areas, the Fundacion Gloria Kriete has continued to provide educational support to many communities in need. Thanks to their collaboration, our young population has been provided with the necessary values and skills to integrate into society creating a more just and humane society.

One of the goals of creating the Foundation was to find the most suitable way to impact people’s lives. Therefore, the Foundation chose to support initiatives implemented by organizations that work in communities facing multiple social issues, since they are the most capable of generating a positive impact where they work. The Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award is a way to promote healthy competition between NGOs, where small and large organizations compete equally, and where what really matters is the social impact. In July of 2006, the first edition of Ayudando a Quien Ayudan Award took place, and since then, the vision of rewarding the remarkable work of NGO’s and its impact on the most vulnerable sectors of El Salvador remains intact. Over the years, we have recognized that it is the only award that – in addition to providing significant financial

36

resources for foundations and associations – also certifies their administrative, financial, and operational excellence. It has also become a seal of quality that guarantees excellent social programs, transparent use of funds, and rigorous legal compliance. Over the years, we have established alliances with partners such as Fundación UNO that provided the nomination to the First Innovation Award in 2007, and Fundación CAOBA that, since 2008, have supported educational projects each year. For this tenth anniversary, CAOBA will be awarding their eighth prize. On our 10th year celebration, we are filled with pride and satisfaction, adding up the 35 awards we have given to 32 amazing organizations, contributing to their institutional vision and mission, and impacting the lives of over 1,650,000 Salvadorans.

All 35 winning projects remain active, as the NGOs that developed them continue their work on changing lives and generating well-being by providing access to basic needs such as health, housing, water and sanitation; education through art, sports, and promoting a culture of peace; as well as economic development and income generation. Each year, this grant competition requires months of preparation and hard work from all of our employees. The process involves a range of activities including convening NGOs to submit their proposals, press conferences across the country, an in-depth evaluation of each proposal by our multidisciplinary committee, brainstorming around the details event, the selection of the 4 winners by the judges, and closing the entire process with the Awards Gala. That night, everything has to be magical and unique, with outstanding visuals, creative presentations, and videos.

The Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan Award is definitely a window of opportunity for nonprofit organizations, by providing funding and institutional support that translates into new public and private partnerships, to ultimately improve the lives of the beneficiaries, and also contribute to sustained growth for the organizations. In 10 years, we have received and reviewed approximately 700 project proposals in the areas of health, education, community development, entrepreneurship and youth prevention. This motivates us to keep on strengthening the Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award for the future, as there are still thousands of Salvadorans that will continue to benefit from the impact of this altruistic initiative promoted by the Kriete family.

37

HEALTH The most vulnerable population in El Salvador is affected by numerous diseases that result from primary and specialized medical public services that lack the adequate resources. As a response to this challenge, foundations and associations work hard to identify and address the gaps, and tens of thousands of Salvadorans currently benefit from health services provided by non-governmental organizations. These organizations are able to provide high quality and timely medical care, with excellent bedside manner, empthy, and customer service that is driven by a deep commitment to serve those most in need. In 10 years, 20% of the winning projects of the Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award have contributed to the improvement of preventive and curative health care services through:

38

• Clinical and hospital equipment donations • Drug and alcohol rehabilitation, healthcare for people with disabilities • Health education for conditions such as diabetes All of these programs have enormous social and economic impact, reducing public health costs by providing quality medical care at low or no cost. The efficiency and effectiveness with which the winning health NGOs manage their resources is another competitive advantage, as it allows them to provide high quality health services at affordable prices, without obtaining any sort of profit. These clinics, hospitals, and health education programs represent an alternative to generating impact in rural and urban areas across El Salvador.

EDUCATION A good education for children and youngsters is necessary: adequate infrastructure, ideal equipment, access to new technologies, and teacher training program are necessary when referring to high quality education. That is why the Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award recognizes the importance of these areas, having granted 8 awards to winning educational institutions. Moreover, thanks to the alliance with CAOBA Foundation since 2008, there is an award for the best educational project proposal submitted each year. The investment in these projects has helped: • Improve conditions in 4 schools by building classrooms, multipurpose rooms, computer centers, libraries, sports facilities, and providing

40

Internet access. All these are essential elements for optimal education. • Encourage reading habits among children and young students through the rollout of the “mobile library concept”. • Implement pre-school education in rural areas through 24 child development centers specialized in providing early stimulation that enables children to develop their cognitive and emotional skills between the ages of 3 and 6. • Develop coaching and mentoring programs for students in San Salvador, to help them achieve their goals and careers. • Execute vocational training for the heads of household in order to develop essential life skills that enable them to improve their financial prospects and well-being.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

42

The key factor for successful community development lies in the integration of aspects such as: available financial resources, the social commitment and ability of NGO’s to implement sustainable social projects. Thanks to the Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award, 5 educational organizations have been able to deepen and expand their successful programs over the last 10 years.

The investment in these projects has helped: • Build 95 homes for impoverished families living in rural El Salvador

Some of the most pressing challenges faced by the communities such as housing, basic services and sanitation were addressed and strengthened to ensure a better quality of life for the people.

• Install solar panels in rural areas.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award identified six projects that sought to leverage the beneficiary population’s desire to generate business opportunities, providing them with the proper training, as well as creating new sources of employment. Social entrepreneurship is a growing tendency for sustainable community development, through the creation of microenterprises and income generation for families with scarce resources. The most significant impact of the winning projects has been overcoming the lack of skills

44

and education of the beneficiaries, who, in many cases, had minimal formal education. The investments in these projects has: • Provided workshops, training, and the establishment of seed capital for the creation of small or family-owned businesses • Provided new employment opportunities through partnerships with the private sector. • Created supply value chains in different parts of the country.

45

YOUTH + PREVENTION El Salvador’s youth is the segment of the population most impacted by the problems affecting the country. Statistically, this segment reports the highest rates of homicides; they are most vulnerable to joining gangs and becoming addicted to drugs. These risks are due to factor such as the lack of safe recreational areas, lack of values, limited opportunities for alternative training and poor employment opportunities. A few alternatives to addressing these problems are the arts, culture, and sports. All of these are key to providing opportunities for a better use of their spare time, in order to reduce the risks to which they are exposed, and complementing their formal educational activities.

46

Over the last 10 years, the Ayudando a Quienes Ayudan award has supported 7 NGOs with prevention projects, representing 26% of the winning projects. The methods used by these NGOs are replicable and can be implemented through the public schools. The investment in these projects has: • Created soccer programs for children and youth, receiving both sports training and values. • Supported a music school, as well as theater and visual arts program. A proud example is the Youth Orchestra of Don Bosco. • Provided vocational and career counselling, as well as providing psychological support.
