WINE DAYS IN YEREVAN

TOLMA FESTIVAL

VICTORY DAY

Also known as Labour Day or Workers' Day in some countries, and often referred to as May Day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day 1.

Yerevan Wine Days will take place in one of the most enchanting, central neighborhoods of Yerevan, known also as wine-lovers’ corner (Saryan street, the intersection of Tumanyan and Pushkin streets), on May 11-12, 2018 at 18:00–23:00. "Yerevan Wine Days" gives a great opportunity to Armenian wine producers, the restaurants and/or other Armenian companies, to introduce their products and services to the international visitors, find new partners and conduct other marketing campaigns.

Tolma Festival is an annual festival in Armenia, also known as Uduli, that is held annually near the city of Armavir, Armenia. It began in 2011 and focuses on appreciation of Armenian cuisine, especially dolma, a traditional Armenian dish made of ground beef, lamb and spices wrapped in grape leaves, cabbage leaves and vegetables. During the competition, festival guests can watch Armenian dances, listen to songs, and taste tolma. At the end of the festival, the jury chooses the best chef. The winner gets a special prize — a golden statue. This year it is holding in Hnaberd, Ararat marz (region). Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War. During the Soviet Union's existence, 9 May was celebrated throughout the USSR and in the countries of the Eastern Bloc. This day locals and tourists visit the Victory Park to pay tribute to the heroes who shed their blood for the sake of their homeland.

PROMINENT ARMENIANS

HEROES WHO

Made History

''To struggle in defense of what is right is not a calamity but a blessing.'' G. Njdeh

GAREGINNJDEH A prominent Armenian military commander, national hero and philosopher. He played a crucial role in the formation and preservation of the Armenian statehood. So, it comes as no surprise that you will find Njdeh’s most inspiring quotes shared on the youth’s pages of social networking sites. Besides, there are several statues, streets and even movies dedicated to the most prominent figure of the 20th century.

ANDRANIKOZANIAN An Armenian military commander and statesman, the best known fedayi and a key figure of the Armenian national liberation movement. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, he was one of the main Armenian leaders of military efforts for the independence of Armenia. After the Revolution of 1917, the Russian army retreated and left the Armenian irregulars outnumbered against the Turks. By May 1918, Turkish forces stood near Yerevan-the future Armenian capital-and were halted at the Battle of Sardarabad. After beating the Turkes, the First Armenian Republic was found.

MONTE MELKONIAN An Armenian revolutionary, left-wing nationalist militant and commander. He was the leader of an offshoot of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) in the 1980s and the most celebrated commander during the Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s. Monte was killed by Azerbaijani soldiers while surveying Merzili with five of his comrades in the aftermath of battle.

VAZGENSARGSYAN An Armenian military commander and politician. He was the first Defence Minister of Armenia from 1991 to 1992 and then from 1995 to 1999. He served as Armenia's Prime Minister from 11 June 1999 until his assassination on 27 October of that year. He rose to prominence during the mass movement for the unification of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia in the late 1980s leading Armenian volunteer groups. Sargsyan is now widely recognized as a national hero across the political spectrum and by the public. Given the honorific Sparapet, he made significant contributions to the establishment of Armenia as independent state and ensuring its security as the founder of the Armenian Army. 12 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

100

th ANNIVERSARY OF THE

For all Armenians around the world, the year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the First Republic of Armenia and the heroic Battles of May, which is one of the most brilliant manifestations of national unity in the history of Armenians. It is a celebration of our salvation and renaissance that led to the establishment of our statehood and paved the way for the Republic of Armenia today. The desire and will to live free and independent, even at the risk of known death, has become one of the most remarkable aspects of the many decades of Armenian history beginning with Haig Nahabed. In our recent history on May 28, 1918, the Armenian people, with the faith and determination of Vartan Mamigonian and Ghevont Yeretz, re-established its own sovereign country to live free on its ancestral land in accordance withthe collective will of the people. May 28 is a precise and meaningful turning point in Armenian history after the fall of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia (1375) making the Armenian people subject to foreign powers. What a providential event this was when considering that just a few years earlier the Armenian Genocide took place in the Ottoman Empire, and the Armenian nation’s tricolor flag of independence was raised! The establishment of the first Armenian Republic on May 28 was not easy. Indeed, the wounds left by World War I had not been resolved. The October Revolution (1917) that took place in Russia led to Russia’s departure from the Caucasus leaving the Armenians alone against the Turks. On the external front, the circumstances surrounding Armenia and the geopolitical gains to be received were not in our favor. On the internal front Armenia was fragile and did not have an organized army and healthy economy. Under these conditions the Turkish army begins to move toward Yerevan. It was, without doubt, difficult for the small Armenian forces to defend the length of the battleground, stretching from the Black Sea to Vasporagan. At this decisive moment Aram Manoogian was declared supreme commander. Our people, young and old, clergy and laity, intellectual and commoner, followed Aram’s appeal and under the motto “freedom or death” shed blood in Karakilisa, Sardarabad, and Bash-Abaran for the independence of the fatherland with their conscience engagement. During the battles at the doors of Yerevan, the victorious Armenian people declared their fatherland’s independence. This is the message of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Republic. Those who shed blood on the road to independence are heroes and martyrs. Therefore, let us bow down to the creation and defense of the first Armenian Republic, just as from May 28 up to this day we bow before the memory of our known and unknown innocent heroes who fought, served and were martyred. If you fancy travelling around Armenia at this period, take part in history-making celebrations. 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

As the second Aurora Prize Laureate, Dr. Catena was awarded $100,000 in gratitude for his dedicated service as the sole surgeon operating in the war and famine-ravaged Nuba region of Sudan. Sardarapat Memorial

T

his memorial complex is built in honor to the Battle of Sardarapat located in the village of Araks, in Armavir marz (region) 11 kilometers southwest of Armavir town. In 1968 during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Sardarapat wich took place on May 22–26, 1918, a memorial park was laid out on the spot of the battlefield. The memorial was designed by architect Rafael Israelyan while the sculpting is by Ara Harutyunyan, Arsham Shahinyan and Samvel Manasyan. The entrance is flanked by huge winged oxen made of red tufa stone. A flight of steps leads to a square from which a 26-metre-high bell tower rises. The beautiful trellis structure with its twelve bells can be seen from afar. The bells ring every year on the day of the historic victory. The monument is guarded by massive ancient style Armenian-winged lions, and is flanked by a memorial garden for Karabakh (Arstakh) martyrs. Sardarapat Memorial is a symbol of pride and survival. The Sardarapat Memorial marks the place of Armenia's successful last-ditch effort to save the nation from obliteration at the hands of the Turks in the Battle of Sardarapat on May 22–26, 1918. Against tremendous odds, and during the haunting backdrop of genocide during the previous few years, Armenia's makeshift army rebuffed the Turkish troops and safeguarded the small portion of historic Armenia, what became the current republic as it stands today. On the grounds of the historic battle one can visit the Sardarapat Ethnography and Liberation Movement History Museum adjacent to the outdoor monument. 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

T

he protest called ''My Step'' was set off by Armenian political opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan on 31 March from the cultural capital of Armenia: Gyumri. From the very beginning there were few people next to the leader mainly journalists. The protests became intense from 13 April when the MP and ex-journalist Mr. Pashinyan reached the capital Yerevan. Tens of thousands people joined the protest having one thing in mind ''We must struggle for our better future peacefully and with love‌'' Authorities and not only didn't take the protests seriously thinking that after prime minister's elections the mass would split up. But they got wrong! The numbers were growing hour by hour, day by day. Can you imagine the 17-year-old school student skipping class to attend two weeks of rallies, because he wants access to a better education; the villagers in remote areas who feel that their voices are finally being heard; and the 12-year-old children blocking roads in an act of nationwide civil disobedience without any fear to be attacked. They demanded the ruling prime minister and Republican Party to resign. And under the pressure, especially when soldiers joined the rallies carried out by more than 200.000 people in the capital and hundreds of thousands in all around the country, the first who gave up was the Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan admitting "I was wrong". The second stage of the protests was even greater when protesters demanded the national Assembly to select their beloved candidate as a Prime Minister. Can you believe that even tourists joined tha mass disobedience? There were even cases when they blocked the streets as a way of protests together with the locals. One of the funniest moments was when Chinise tourists blocked Tumanyan street and chanted ''Nikol Prime Minister''. Our velvet rEVOLution was a kind of ''festival'' where everybody was happily dancing, singing, playing outside and chanting ''Nikol is my Prime Minister‌'' After unfair elections just a day later (02.05.18) the whole nation made the ruling party change its opinion and vote for our beloved candidate Pashinyan on 08.05.18. Our nation proved to the world that union and love can break even the strongest chains. We are powerful together walking hand in hand. The first ever revolution ended up 40 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

with no victims or attacks. We, though taking a tiny part on the world map, made the Velvet Revolution true. WE WO N. This hasn't just been a demonstration, this was a great energy of love and peace manifested by our lovely people. No attacks, no violence, no blood shed... just love and mutual respect have been the base of rallies. Even tourists joined the peaceful meetings on the streets witnessing historical turnrounds of Armenian Velvet Revolution. Love and respect are in the air pouring from each individual spreading throughout the country and beyond... On 08.05.18 the final elections took place and Pashinyan was elected as a Prime Minister. All people wore white T-shirts and shirts to show the pureness and love of their struggle and to celebrate the victory and election of the Prime Minister. As during all the previous days, this time as well tourists joined the national celebrations. All these events have proved one thing that Armenia is one of the safest countries in the world where even revolutions are turning into fun and joy!
