It's Summertime
Summer is defined for many of us as long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It's a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies and make new friends. Do you agree that there is something magical about summer? As for me, it's the most blooming time of the year when the level of happiness and love reaches their highest peak. The happiest part of the season is the vacation which gives us an opportunity to travel and discover the world. If you have decided to spend your holidays in Armenia, believe me, it's the right choice you have made. During your trip, you can not only unveil the historical shrines, but also relax in the purest nature. Don't lose a chance to have an incredible night out in the capital Yerevan and enjoy the beauty of the city. All cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs are open till late at night welcoming you with warmth and hospitality. Now it's your turn to celebrate the loveliest time of the year in the land of sun.

elcome to the land of sun! It's our pleasure to provide you with some initial tips what to do in the capital city Yerevan during a day or two. A trip in this manageable and safe city is easy alone or with company, and its big-hearted locals will leave you feeling the great hug of Yerevan long after you’ve left. Start the morning of the first day from the Republic Square. Designed by the architect Alexander Tamanyan, the sweep of pink neoclassical buildings around the square boasts impressively carved arches and stolid colonnades and, by dusk, crowds gather around jubilant fountains that tango to a mix of dreadful pop and more elevated works by Armenia’s leading composer, Khachaturian. Just in front you can find the History Museum of Armenia presenting the world's oldest shoe going back 5,500 years. You can spend your afternoon on discovering Northern Ave. The Tamanyan - designed street is now lined up with high buildings, luxury brand shops and restaurants. Have your lunch at one of the best Armenian restaurants called Tsirani or The Wine House (p.s. find the advertising details in this issue). Your coffee will taste even more energizing if drunk in one of the cozy cafes surrounding Cascade. In warmer months it hosts outdoor concerts and, should you fancy a little alfresco dancing, every last Friday of the month, locals help left-footed tourists giggle their way through the traditional Karin folk dance. Flavor your evening with great music enjoying live concerts performed all around the city. Don't forget about having a rest or picnic in the parks like Tumanyan, Lovers', Victory, so on. The nights will be unforgettable in the modern nightclubs calling out with incredible DJs creating the best sounds to make you hit the dance floor and feel like tomorrow doesn't exist. As the local cuisine is amazingly tasty and mainly made of organic food, you can start a healthy lifestyle combined with new discoveries. We advise you to refresh yourself with a glass of tan (a cool drink made of matsun) especially in hot weather. For quick and yummy break you must try zhengyalov hats or lahmajoo. Be sure, that all the mentioned activities are just drops from the ocean of discoveries you are going to make while walking through the streets of the city older than Rome. 8 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

ARMENIA
Although traditions of rural life have formed from time immemorial, the notion of rural tourism as a developing field in Armenia appeared quite recently. Not surprisingly, ecotourism and interest towards this discipline gains momentum in nowadays world. There is only one escape from hustle and bustle of the city life – countryside. Moreover, when your trip is flavored with a carefully tailored program, allowing you to discover new and unknown places, way of life and mindset of a different culture, try incredible dishes, then it becomes twice as interesting. For example, agrotour in Getik valley will enable you to communicate with locals, explore natural beauty of this region: numerous streams and rivers, canyons and mountains; take part in various food and drink master classes, and make the most of your time in two days. Within rural tours in Armenia, you can visit Caucasus Wildlife Refuge and see many of the rarest animals on Earth, such as Caucasian lynx, Caucasian leopard, Bezoar goat, Armenian mouflon, Caucasian bear, Bearded vulture, Eurasian Griffon Vulture, Black Vulture and Golden Eagle. The tours are usually combined with a cultural program, which includes visits to local sights. Agrotourism will help you to get acquainted with the Armenian extraordinary cuisine, spectacular and globally-significant historical and cultural past. You’ll see how the forces of nature influence Armenia’s rural life, while exploring the customs which lead the lives of Armenian villagers. If you want to explore the ancient rural and cultural soul of Armenia, agrotourism is what you have been searching for.

Tabbouleh
Tabbouleh is traditionally served as part of a mezze in the Arab world. Variations of it are made by Armenians. It's a Levantine vegetarian salad made of mostly finely chopped parsley with tomatoes, mint, onion, Bulgur and seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Some variations add garlic or lettuce, or use couscous instead of bulgur.
INGREDIENTS DIENTS • 1/2 cup extra fine bulgur wheat • 4 firm Roma tomatoes, very finely chopped • 1 cucumber, very finely chopped • 2 bunches parsley, part of the stems removed, washed and well-dried, very finely chopped • 12-15 fresh mint leaves, stems removed, washed, well-dried, very finely chopped • 4 green onions, white and green parts, very finely chopped • salt • 3-4 tbsp lime juice (lemon juice, if you prefer) • 3-4 tbsp Early Harvest extra virgin olive oil PREPARATION •Wash the bulgur wheat and soak it in water for 5-7 minute. Drain very well (squeeze the bulgur wheat by hand to get rid of any excess water). Set aside. • Very finely chop the vegetables, herbs and green onions as indicated above. Be sure to place the tomatoes in a colander to drain excess juice. • Place the chopped vegetables, herbs and green onions in a mixing bowl or dish. Add the bulgur and season with salt. Mix gently. • Now add the lime juice and olive oil and mix again. • For best results, cover the tabbouleh and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate. If you like, serve the tabbouleh with a side of pita and romaine lettuce leaves, which act as wraps or “boats” for the tabbouleh. 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

“The Color of Pomegranate” Surely, you will have an opportunity to visit Parajanov house-museum, so this will be a great chance to watch internationally famous director Sergei Parajanov's work. It's a poetic treatment of the life of the 18th century Armenian singer Sayat-Nova. The movie is silent and the director transfers the meaning through the characters. “Hello, it's me” Released in 1966, the movie broke a record in rentals reaching more than 10 million views. The movie is based on partially true events. The actions take place after the World War 2 introducing human faiths combined with the memories of the past. The movie was nominated in Cannes Film Festival. “First Love Song” The movie was released in 1958. The plot of the musical, melodrama movie tells about a talented and self-confident young singer facing different obstacles in life. He should overcome all of them to return the beloved wife back. The songs being sung in the movie are still loved by the Armenians. “A Bride from the North” This may be considered as the first Armenian musical shot in 1975. Arno Babajanyan, one the most beloved Armenian artists and musicians, was the composer of the movie's soundtracks. At the end, we would like to advise you to organize the movie watching in a cozy Armenian-style environment tasting mouthwatering Armenian fruit and sweets at the same time.

LEGENDS OF ARMENIA
LAKE SEVAN
The phenomenon of Armenia lies in the contrast and variety of its attractions. A good example is Lake Sevan. From the first sight it seems to be a simple lake boasting a set of leisure time activities. But the truth is that there is nothing simple in Armenia and Lake Sevan is not an exception. Even we, having been born and grown up here, make sure of it every single time. Being one of the must-visit summertime places in Armenia, the lake contains a story in every inch- starting from the shore, mountain ranges, underwater world, ending with a drop of water. Some of the stories are real, while the others are made up. Actually, all together help to understand the real soul and mood of Sevan, the feeling of infinity and power, which you can feel while standing at the shore and looking at the moving water. Every single tourist who visits Sevan chooses a legend, a story which sounds more realistic for him/her. One will believe that Lake Sevan was emerged because of a bride living in a neighboring village. According to it, she went to take water from a wellspring and forgot to close the outflow. As a result, the water flowed and spread around reaching the houses and forming the lake. The other story is about people who turned into pigeons and flew out of Ayrivank monastery near Sevan. The piece of a cross Jesus Christ was crucified on was kept there. Once, Amir Timur invaded this territory. He had heard about the healing power of the cross and ordered to take its piece out to cure his illnesses. In response to his demand, the priest asked not to kill as many people as the monastery could involve. From the dusk till dawn the stream of people didn't come to an end. When Amir Timur angrily entered Ayrivank, he saw the priest praying on the piece and people turning into pigeons and flying out of the window. Would you believe if we say that Lake Sevan includes some water taken from Lake Baikal and the Pacific Ocean? Surely, you may think about it as another legend but it's true. Years ago a scientist called Yuri Senkevich poured water taken from those two places into Sevan. This unique natural wonder is not only beautiful but is also mysterious and not fully-discovered. Though it may seem surprising, mountain carvings have been found here showcasing symbols similar to Armenian alphabet. You can also see and sail through the forests covered by water as a result of the increased level of Sevan. Ancient monasteries and cross-stones complete all the mentioned scenic beauty. So, it's your turn to take a tour around Geghama Beauty (Lake Sevan) not forgeting to have warm clothes, as even hot summer evenings in Sevan are cool. Be ready to witness the stunning sites and reveal the secrets of the lake. Article by Margarita Yesoyan Translated and edited by TourInfo
